YK-59-1Yuddha Kanda 59.1

तस्मिन्हतेराक्षससैन्यपालेप्लवङ्गमानामृषभेणयुद्धे । भीमयुधंसागरतुल्यवेगंविदुद्रुवेराक्षसराजसैन्यम् ।।6.59.1।।

tasminhaterākṣasasainyapāleplavaṅgamānāmṛṣabheṇayuddhe | bhīmayudhṃsāgaratulyavegṃvidudruverākṣasarājasainyam ||6.59.1||

Translation

राक्षससैन्यपाले commander in chief of the army, तस्मिन् in that, युद्धे war, प्लवङ्गमानाम् ऋषभेण bull of the Vanaras, Neela निहते has been killed, भीमायुधम् with dreadful weapons, सागरतुल्यवेगम् like the ocean in fury, राक्षसराजसैन्यम् Rakshasa king's army, विदुद्रुवे ran.

Meaning

Commander in chief of the Rakshasa army killed by Neela, the bull of Vanaras, the army Rakshasas with dreadful weapons which were like the fury of an ocean, ran.

YK-59-2Yuddha Kanda 59.2

गत्वाऽथरक्षोधिपतेश्शशंसुस्सेनापतिंपावकसूनुशस्तम् । तच्छापितेषांवचनंनिशम्यरक्षोधिपःक्रोधवशंजगाम ।।6.59.2।।

gatvā'tharakṣodhipateśśaśṃsussenāpatiṃpāvakasūnuśastam | tacchāpiteṣāṃvacanṃniśamyarakṣodhipḥkrodhavaśṃjagāma ||6.59.2||

Translation

अथ and then, गत्वा having gone, सेनापतिम् commander in chief, पावकसूनुशस्तम् son of firegod killed, रक्षोधिपतेः king of Rakshasas, शशंसुः the survivors, रक्षोधिपः king of Rakshasas, तेषाम् in that way, तत् thereafter, वचनम् words, निशम्य revealed, क्रोधवशम् under the spell of anger, जगाम became.

Meaning

Having gone to the king of Rakshasas, the survivors said, "Prahastha is killed by the son of fire god." Thereafter, the king of Rakshasas fell prey to anger.

YK-59-3Yuddha Kanda 59.3

सङ् ख्येप्रहस्तंनिहतंनिशम्यशोकार्दितःक्रोधपरीतचेताः । उवाचतान्राक्षसयूथमुख्यानिन्द्रोयथानिर्जरयोथमुख्यान् ।।6.59.3।।

saṅ khyeprahastṃnihatṃniśamyaśokārditḥkrodhaparītacetāḥ | uvācatānrākṣasayūthamukhyānindroyathānirjarayothamukhyān ||6.59.3||

Translation

सङ् ख्ये relating to, प्रहस्तम् Prahastha, निहतम् death, निशम्य revealed, शोकार्दितः sorrowful, क्रोधपरीतचेताः tormented with anger, इन्द्रः Indra, निर्जरयोथमुख्याविव commanders of celestial troops, तान् to them, राक्षसयूथमुख्यान् to the Rakshasa troops, उवाच said.

Meaning

Even as Rakshasas revealed about Prahastha's death, tormented by grief and anger Ravana spoke to Rakshasa troops just as Indra spoke to celestial troops.

YK-59-4Yuddha Kanda 59.4

नावज्ञारिपवेकार्यायैरिन्द्रबलसूदनः । सूदितस्सैन्यपालोमेसानुयात्रस्सकुञ्जरः ।।6.59.4।।

nāvajñāripavekāryāyairindrabalasūdanḥ | sūditassainyapālomesānuyātrassakuñjarḥ ||6.59.4||

Translation

इन्द्रबलसादनः one who is capable of destroying Indra's army, सानुयात्रः followers, सकुञ्जरः elephants, मेसैन्यपालः my commander in chief, यैः he who, सूदितः capable of killing, रिपवे with regard to enemy, अवज्ञा low opinion, नकार्या not to think.

Meaning

"No low opinion to be entertained with regard to an enemy by whom my commander in chief of the army was killed, who is capable of killing the army of Indra with his followers and elephants."

YK-59-5Yuddha Kanda 59.5

सोऽहंरिपुविनाशायविजयायाविचारयन् । स्वयमेवगमिष्यामिरणशीर्षंतदद्भुतम् ।।6.59.5।।

so'hṃripuvināśāyavijayāyāvicārayan | svayamevagamiṣyāmiraṇaśīrṣṃtadadbhutam ||6.59.5||

Translation

सः he अहम् I, अविचारयन् without thinking, रिपुविनाशाय to put an end to the enemy, विजयाय for success, अद्भुतम् wonderful, तत् that, रणशीर्षम् battle scene, स्वयमेव I shall myself, गमिष्यामि will go.

Meaning

"I shall go myself without thinking to that wonderful battle scene and put an end to the enemy and succeed."

YK-59-6Yuddha Kanda 59.6

अद्यतद्वानरानीकंरामंचसहलक्ष्मणम् । निर्दहिष्यामिबाणौघैर्वनंदीप्स्सैरिवानगिभिः ।।6.59.6।।

adyatadvānarānīkṃrāmṃcasahalakṣmaṇam | nirdahiṣyāmibāṇaughairvanṃdīpssairivānagibhiḥ ||6.59.6||

Translation

अद्य now, तत् that, वानरानीकम् army of Vanaras, सहलक्ष्मणम् along with Lakshmana, रामंच and Rama, दीप्स्सैः burn, अनगिभिः without the use of fire, वनमिव like a forest, बाणौघैः with streams of arrows, निर्धहिष्यामि burn up.

Meaning

"Now I will go and burn up that army of Vanaras along with Lakshmana and Rama with the stream of my arrows just as forest fire without the use of fire."

YK-59-7Yuddha Kanda 59.7

सएवमुक्त्वाज्वलनप्रकाशंरथंतुरङ्गोत्तमराजयुक्तम् । प्रकाशमानंवपुषाज्वलन्तंसमारुरोहामरराजशत्रुः ।।6.59.7।।

saevamuktvājvalanaprakāśṃrathṃturaṅgottamarājayuktam | prakāśamānṃvapuṣājvalantṃsamārurohāmararājaśatruḥ ||6.59.7||

Translation

अमरराजशत्रुः enemy of king of Devatas, सः he, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having said, ज्वलनप्रकाशम् luminous like fire, तुरङ्गोत्तमराजयुक्तम् yoked to the best of horses, प्रकाशमानम् blazing, वपुषा by virtue of its form (golden), ज्वलन्तम् shining, रथम् chariot, समारुरोह ascended.

Meaning

Ravana, the enemy of the king of Devatas, having spoken like that ascended a chariot yoked to the best of horses, shining by virtue of its form (golden) and luminous like fire.

YK-59-8Yuddha Kanda 59.8

सशङ्खभेरीपणवप्रणादैरास्फोटितक्षेळ्वितसिंहनादैः । पुण्यैस्स्तवैश्चाप्यभिपूज्यमानस्तदाययौराक्षसराजमुख्य:।। 6.59.8।।

saśaṅkhabherīpaṇavapraṇādairāsphoṭitakṣeळvitasiṃhanādaiḥ | puṇyaisstavaiścāpyabhipūjyamānastadāyayaurākṣasarājamukhya:|| 6.59.8||

Translation

तदा then, राक्षसराजमुख्यः foremost king of the Rakshasas, सः he, शङ्खभेरीपणवप्रणादैः blast of conchs, beat of drums, and clapping of arms अस्फोटितक्षेळ्वितसिंहनादैः clapping of arms and sounds like the roar of a lion, पुण्यैः chanting sounds of agreeable verses, स्तवैश्चापि eulogizing, अभिपूज्यमानः honoured very highly, ययौ went forth.

Meaning

As the foremost king of the Rakshasas went forth, a blast of sounds of conchs, beat of drums and clapping of arms and the roaring sounds followed by the chanting of auspicious verses sung by the Rakshasas eulogizing and honouring the king highly.

YK-59-9Yuddha Kanda 59.9

सशैलजीमून्तिकाशरूपैर्मांसादनैःपावकदीप्तनेत्रैः । बभौवृतोराक्षसराजमुख्योभूतैर्वृतोरुद्रइवासुरेशः ।।6.59.9।।

saśailajīmūntikāśarūpairmāṃsādanaiḥpāvakadīptanetraiḥ | babhauvṛtorākṣasarājamukhyobhūtairvṛtorudraivāsureśḥ ||6.59.9||

Translation

शैलजीमून्तिकाशरूपैः by forms that resembled mountains and clouds, पावक दीप्तनेत्रैः whose eyes were like fire, मांसाशनैः flesh eaters, सः he, राक्षसराजमुख्यः Rakshasa king, भूतैः by Rakshasas, वृतः surrounded, असुरेशः asuras, रुद्रुःइव like Rudra, बभौ seemed.

Meaning

The Rakshasa king surrounded by Rakshasas who resembled mountains and clouds in form seemed like Rudra surrounded by asuras.

YK-59-10Yuddha Kanda 59.10

ततोनगर्यास्सहसामहौजानिष्क्रम्यतद्वानरसैन्यमुग्रम् । महार्णवाभ्रस्तनितंददर्शसमुद्यतंपादपशैलहस्तम् ।।6.59.10।।

tatonagaryāssahasāmahaujāniṣkramyatadvānarasainyamugram | mahārṇavābhrastanitṃdadarśasamudyatṃpādapaśailahastam ||6.59.10||

Translation

ततः thereafter, महौजाः possessed with great splendour, सहसा forcibly, नगर्याः at the city, निष्क्रम्य stopped, उग्रम् in front, महार्णवाभ्रस्तनितम् resembling great ocean and cloud, समुद्यतम् collected together, पादपशैलहस्तम् taking trees and rocks, तत् वानरसैन्यम् the Vanara army, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Thereafter, Ravana possessed with great splendour stopped at the city and saw the army of Vanaras collected together looking like an ocean of clouds wielding trees and rocks.

YK-59-11Yuddha Kanda 59.11

तद्राक्षसानीकमतिप्रचण्डमालोक्यरामोभुजगेन्द्रबाहुः । विभीषणंशस्त्रभृतांवरिष्ठमुवाचसेवानुगतःपृथुश्रीः ।।6.59.11।।

tadrākṣasānīkamatipracaṇḍamālokyarāmobhujagendrabāhuḥ | vibhīṣaṇṃśastrabhṛtāṃvariṣṭhamuvācasevānugatḥpṛthuśrīḥ ||6.59.11||

Translation

भुजगेन्द्रबाहुः whose arms are like king of serpents (smooth and strong), सेवानुगतः followed by army, पृथुश्रीः shining with splendour, रामः Rama, अतिप्रचण्डम् exceedingly furious, तत् that, राक्षसानीकम् Rakshasa army, आलोक्य seeing, शस्त्रभृताम् wielder of weapons, वरिष्ठम् foremost, विभीषणम् Vibheeshana, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

Rama, whose arms were like the king of serpents, shining with splendour, followed by army, seeing the army of Rakshasas exceedingly furious, spoke to Vibheeshana the foremost of the wielder of weapons.

YK-59-12Yuddha Kanda 59.12

नानापताकध्वजशस्त्रजुष्टंप्रासासिशूलायुथवज्रजुष्टम् । कस्येदमक्षोभ्यमभीरुजुष्टंमहेन्द्रोपमनागजुष्टम् ।।6.59.12।।

nānāpatākadhvajaśastrajuṣṭṃprāsāsiśūlāyuthavajrajuṣṭam | kasyedamakṣobhyamabhīrujuṣṭṃmahendropamanāgajuṣṭam ||6.59.12||

Translation

नानापताकध्वजशस्त्रजुष्टम् several kinds of flags, posts and weapons, प्रासासिशूलायुथवज्रजुष्टम् armed with missiles, tridents, and weapons like darts, swords and spikes, अभीरुजुष्टम् unshakeable, महेन्द्रोपमनागजुष्टम् elephants of the size of Mahendra mountain, अक्षोभ्यम् soldiers, इदम् this, सैन्यम् army, कस्य whose.

Meaning

"Under whose command is this unshakeable army with several kinds of flags, posts and weapons armed with missiles, tridents, swords spikes and darts, with elephants the size of Mahendra mountain"

YK-59-13Yuddha Kanda 59.13

ततस्तुरामस्यनिशम्यवाक्यंविभीषणंश्शक्रसमानवीर्यः । शशंसरामस्यबलप्रवेगंमहात्मनांराक्षसपुङ्गवानाम् ।।6.59.13।।

tatasturāmasyaniśamyavākyṃvibhīṣaṇṃśśakrasamānavīryḥ | śaśṃsarāmasyabalapravegṃmahātmanāṃrākṣasapuṅgavānām ||6.59.13||

Translation

ततः thereupon, शक्रसमानवीर्यः hero equal to Indra, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, रामस्य Rama's, वाक्यम् words, निशम्य on hearing, महात्मनाम् great soul, राक्षसपुङ्गवानाम् among the Rakshasa leaders, बलप्रवेगम् endowed with great strength, रामस्य to Rama, शशंस revealed.

Meaning

Thereupon, Vibheeshana, equal to Indra in valour, on hearing the great soul Rama, revealed about the Rakshasa army endowed with great strength.

YK-59-14Yuddha Kanda 59.14

योऽसौगजस्कन्धगतोमहात्मानवोदितार्कोपमताम्रवक्त्रः । प्रकम्पयन्नागशिरोऽभ्युपैतिह्यकम्पनंत्वेनमवेहिराजन् ।।6.59.14।।

yo'saugajaskandhagatomahātmānavoditārkopamatāmravaktrḥ | prakampayannāgaśiro'bhyupaitihyakampanṃtvenamavehirājan ||6.59.14||

Translation

राजन् king!, गजस्कन्धगतः by whom seated on the elephant, is shaking (by his weight) the elephant's head, नवोदितार्कोपमताम्रवक्त्रः coppery face resembles rising Sun, महात्मा great, यःअसौ he who, नागशिरः mounted on elephant, संकम्पयन् Akampana, अभ्युपैति gigantic, एनम् he is, अकम्पनम् Akampana, अवेहि know.

Meaning

"O King! the one seated on the elephant, by whose weight the elephant head is shaking, whose coppery face is like the rising sun, a gigantic one is Akampana."

YK-59-15Yuddha Kanda 59.15

योऽसौरथस्थोमृगराजकेतुर्दून्वस्थिन्दनुश्शक्रधनुःप्रकाशम् । करीवभात्युग्रविवृत्तदंष्ट्रस्सइन्द्रजिन्नामवरप्रधानः ।।6.59.15।।

yo'saurathasthomṛgarājaketurdūnvasthindanuśśakradhanuḥprakāśam | karīvabhātyugravivṛttadṃṣṭrassaindrajinnāmavarapradhānḥ ||6.59.15||

Translation

रथस्थः from the chariot, मृगराजकेतुः distinguished by the sign of lion, शक्रधनुःप्रकाशम् splendid as the bow of Indra, धनुः bow, धुन्वन् making sound, यःअसौ he who, उग्रविवृत्तदंष्ट्रः with terrific teeth projected forward, करीव elephant, भाति looks like, सः he, वरप्रधानः eminent by the boons bestowed, इन्द्रजित् नाम Indrajith by name.

Meaning

"The one on the chariot, distinguished by the sign of a lion, and making sound with his bow, splendid as Indra's bow with terrific teeth projected forward looks like an elephant, eminent by virtue of the boons bestowed is Indrajith by name."

YK-59-16Yuddha Kanda 59.16

यश्चैषव्निध्यास्तमहेन्द्रकल्पोधन्वीरथस्थोऽतिरथोतिवीरः । विष्पारयन् चापमतुल्यमानंनाम्नातिकायोऽतिविवृद्धकायः ।।6.59.16।।

yaścaiṣavnidhyāstamahendrakalpodhanvīrathastho'tirathotivīrḥ | viṣpārayan cāpamatulyamānṃnāmnātikāyo'tivivṛddhakāyḥ ||6.59.16||

Translation

व्निध्यास्तमहेन्द्रकल्पः resembles Vindhya mountain in the west and Mahendra mountain, धन्वी stretching his bow and making sound, रथस्थः from the chariot, अतिरथः great chariot warrior, अतिवीरः great hero, अतुल्यमानम् unequalled in size, चापम् bow, विष्पारयन् yonder, अतिविवृद्धकायः body grown out of size, यःएषः he in that way, अयम् coming in sight, नाम्ना named, अतिकायः Atikaya.

Meaning

"He who resembles Vindhya Mountain in the west (where the sun sets) and the Mahendra mountain (in size) seated on the chariot, is a great chariotwarrior, a hero unequalled in size, wielding a bow whose body is grown out of size, who is coming in sight is by name Atikaya."

YK-59-17Yuddha Kanda 59.17

योऽसौनवार्कोदितताम्रचक्षुरारुह्यघण्टानिनदप्रणादम् । गजंखरंगर्जतिवैमहात्मामहोदरोनामसएषःवीरः ।।6.59.17।।

yo'saunavārkoditatāmracakṣurāruhyaghaṇṭāninadapraṇādam | gajṃkharṃgarjativaimahātmāmahodaronāmasaeṣḥvīrḥ ||6.59.17||

Translation

नवार्कोदितताम्रचक्षुः whose eyes are coppery red in anger, यःअसौ he Oh!, घण्टनिनदप्रणादम् whose trumpeting resembles beating of bells, गजम् elephant, आरुह्य mounted, खरम् harsh, गर्जति roars, महात्मा great, सःएषःवीरः he in that way a courageous one, महोदरोनाम by name Mahodara.

Meaning

"He whose eyes are coppery red in anger, who rides on elephant resembles the beating of bells, roars in harsh tone are a great courageous one by the name Mahodara."

YK-59-18Yuddha Kanda 59.18

योऽसौहयंकाञ्चनचित्रभाण्डमारुह्यसन्ध्याभ्रगिरिप्रकाशम् । प्रासंसमुद्यम्यमरीचिनद्धंपिशाचएषोऽशनितुल्यवेगः ।।6.59.18।।

yo'sauhayṃkāñcanacitrabhāṇḍamāruhyasandhyābhragiriprakāśam | prāsṃsamudyamyamarīcinaddhṃpiśācaeṣo'śanitulyavegḥ ||6.59.18||

Translation

सन्ध्याभ्रगिरिप्रकाशम् shining like a mountain crowned with cloud, यः he, असौ Oh!, काञ्चनचित्रभाण्डम् decorated with gold jewels, हयम् horses, आरुह्य mounted, मरीचिनद्धम् radiant like the Sun, प्रासम् holding the yoke, समुद्यम्य ascended, एषः in that way, अशनितुल्यवेगः of high speed, पिशाचः Pisacha.

Meaning

"He who is mounted on horses decorated with gold shining, like a mountain crowned with cloud, radiant as the Sun holding the shining yokes coming at high speed is by name Pisacha."

YK-59-19Yuddha Kanda 59.19

यश्चैषशूलंनिशितंप्रगृह्यविद्युत्प्रभंकिङ्करवज्रवेगम् । वृषेन्द्रमास्थायगिरिप्रकाशमायातियोऽसौत्रिशिरायशस्वी ।।6.59.19।।

yaścaiṣaśūlṃniśitṃpragṛhyavidyutprabhṃkiṅkaravajravegam | vṛṣendramāsthāyagiriprakāśamāyātiyo'sautriśirāyaśasvī ||6.59.19||

Translation

यःएषः he in that way, निशितम् firmly, विद्युत्प्रभम् shining like lightning, किङ्करवज्रवेगम् surpassing the thunderbolt in speed, शूलम् trident, प्रगृह्य seizing, गिरिप्रकाशम् shining like mountain, वृषेन्द्रम् Lordly bull, आरुह्य riding, आयाति coming, सःअसौ he is, यशस्वी famous, यः he, त्रिशिराः Trisira.

Meaning

"He who comes firmly shining like lightning, surpassing thunderbolt in speed, seizing a trident, riding a Lordly bull shining like a mountain is the famous Trisira."

YK-59-20Yuddha Kanda 59.20

असौचजीमूतनिकाशरूपःकुम्भःपृथुव्यूढसुजातवक्षाः । समाहितःपन्नगराजकेतुर्विष्पारयन्यातिधनुर्विधून्वन् ।।6.59.20।।

asaucajīmūtanikāśarūpḥkumbhḥpṛthuvyūḍhasujātavakṣāḥ | samāhitḥpannagarājaketurviṣpārayanyātidhanurvidhūnvan ||6.59.20||

Translation

जीमूतनिकाशरूपः in the form of cloud, पृथुव्यूढसुजातवक्षाः of fleshy well shaped broad chest, समाहितः fully prepared, पन्नगराजकेतुः with the sign of the king of serpents, असौ he is, कुम्भं Kumbha, धनुः bow, विधून्वन् , विष्पारयन् stretching, याति there comes.

Meaning

"There comes Kumbha whose form is like a cloud in form, whose chest is fleshy and broad. He is fully prepared, coming with a sign of the king of serpents (Vasuki) stretching his bow."

YK-59-21Yuddha Kanda 59.21

यश्चैषजाम्बूनदवज्रजुष्टंदीप्तंसधूमंपरिघंप्रगृह्य । आयातिरक्षोबलकेतुभूतःसोऽसौनिकुम्भोऽद्भुतघोरकर्मा ।।6.59.21।।

yaścaiṣajāmbūnadavajrajuṣṭṃdīptṃsadhūmṃparighṃpragṛhya | āyātirakṣobalaketubhūtḥso'saunikumbho'dbhutaghorakarmā ||6.59.21||

Translation

यःएषः he in that way, जाम्बूनदवज्रजुष्टम् studded with gold and diamonds, दीप्तम् shining, सधूमम् smoky, परिघम् iron club, प्रगृह्य seizing, आयाति comes, सःअसौ he is, रक्षोबलकेतुभूतः chief of all Rakshasa army, अद्भुतघोरकर्मा capable of wonderful and terrible deeds, निकुम्भः Nikumbha.

Meaning

"There comes Nikumbha, studded with gold and diamonds, shining and smoky, who is the chief of Rakshasa army seizing an iron club, is capable of wonderful and terrific deeds."

YK-59-22Yuddha Kanda 59.22

यश्चैषचापासिशरौघजुष्टंपताकिनंपावकदीप्तरूपम् । रथंसमास्थायविभात्युदग्रोनरान्तकोऽसौनगशृङ्गयोधी ।।6.59.22।।

yaścaiṣacāpāsiśaraughajuṣṭṃpatākinṃpāvakadīptarūpam | rathṃsamāsthāyavibhātyudagronarāntako'saunagaśṛṅgayodhī ||6.59.22||

Translation

चापासिशरौघजुष्टम् with multitude of swords and arrows, पताकिनम् with flags, पावकदीप्तरूपम् blazing like fire, रथम् chariot, समास्थाय mounted on, यःएषः he that way, विभाति glorious, उदग्रः on top, असौ he is, नगशृङ्गयोधी fights with mountain peaks, नरान्तकः Naranthaka.

Meaning

Again, comes Naranthaka, with multitude of swords and arrows, mounted on top of a chariot with flags, blazing like fire, who fights with mountain peaks.

YK-59-23-24Yuddha Kanda 59.23–24 (युग्मम्)

यश्चैषनानाविधघोररूपैर्व्याघ्रोष्ट्रनागेन्द्रमृगाश्ववक्त्रै: । भूतैर्वृतोभातिविवृत्तनेत्स्रैसोऽसौसुराणामपिदर्पहन्ता ।।6.59.23।। त्रैतदिन्दुप्रतिमंविभातिछत्रंसितंसूक्ष्मशलाकमग्य्रम् । अत्रैषरक्षोधिपतिर्महात्माभूतैर्वृतोरुद्रइवावभाति ।।6.59.24।।

yaścaiṣanānāvidhaghorarūpairvyāghroṣṭranāgendramṛgāśvavaktrai: | bhūtairvṛtobhātivivṛttanetsraiso'sausurāṇāmapidarpahantā ||6.59.23|| traitadindupratimṃvibhātichatrṃsitṃsūkṣmaśalākamagyram | atraiṣarakṣodhipatirmahātmābhūtairvṛtorudraivāvabhāti ||6.59.24||

Translation

Meaning

"One who is surrounded by several hideous forms, like heads of tigers, camels, Lordly elephants and horses, rolling eyes, just as Rudra by his attendants, who is surrounded by Rakshasas and is humbled by the pride of even Devatas, over him shines the white canopy resembling the moon with slender ribs is the king of Rakshasas."

YK-59-25Yuddha Kanda 59.25

असौकिरीटीचलकुण्डलास्योनगेन्द्रविन्ध्योपमभीमकायः । महेन्द्रवैवस्वतदर्पहन्तारक्षोधिपस्सूर्यइवावभाति ।।6.59.25।।

asaukirīṭīcalakuṇḍalāsyonagendravindhyopamabhīmakāyḥ | mahendravaivasvatadarpahantārakṣodhipassūryaivāvabhāti ||6.59.25||

Translation

किरीटी decked with crown, चलकुण्डलास्यः countenance with hanging earrings, नगेन्द्रविन्ध्योपमभीमकायः of terrible form like Himalayas and Vindhya, महेन्द्रवैवस्वतदर्पहन्ता who has humbled the pride of Mahendra and Yama, रक्षोधिपः king of Rakshasas, सूर्यःइव like Sun, अवभाति shining.

Meaning

"There is the king of Rakshasas shining like Sun, whose countenance shines with hanging earrings, of terrible form like the Himalayas and Vindhya, who has humbled the pride of Mahendra and Yama."

YK-59-26Yuddha Kanda 59.26

प्रत्युवाचततोरामोविभीषणमरिन्दम् । अहोदीप्तमहातेजारावणोराक्षसेश्वरः ।।6.59.26।।

pratyuvācatatorāmovibhīṣaṇamarindam | ahodīptamahātejārāvaṇorākṣaseśvarḥ ||6.59.26||

Translation

ततः then, अरिन्दमः scourge of enemies, रामः Rama, विभीषणम् Vibheeshana, प्रत्युवाच replied, अहो Oh, राक्षसेश्वरः Rakshasa king, रावणः Ravana, दीप्तमहातेजाः endowed with great luminous glory.

Meaning

Then Rama the scourge of enemies replied Vibheeshana, "Oh! Ravana! King of Rakshasas is endowed with luminous glory."

YK-59-27Yuddha Kanda 59.27

आदित्यइवदुष्प्रेक्ष्योरश्मिभिर्भातिरावणः । सुव्यक्तंलक्ष्यतेह्यस्यरूपंतेजःसमावृतम् ।।6.59.27।।

ādityaivaduṣprekṣyoraśmibhirbhātirāvaṇḥ | suvyaktṃlakṣyatehyasyarūpṃtejḥsamāvṛtam ||6.59.27||

Translation

रावणः Ravana, रश्मिभिः blazing, आदित्यःइव like the Sun, दुष्प्रेक्ष्य difficult to gaze, भाति shining, अस्य his, तेजःसमावृतम् brilliance spread all over, रूपम् form, सुव्यक्तम् to discern, लक्ष्यतेहि not perceptible.

Meaning

"Ravana blazing like the sun is difficult to gaze even. His shine is spread all over and not perceptible to discern."

YK-59-28Yuddha Kanda 59.28

देवदानववीराणांवपुर्नैवंविधंभवेत् । यादृशंराक्षसेन्द्रस्यवपुरेतत्प्रकाशते ।।6.59.28।।

devadānavavīrāṇāṃvapurnaivṃvidhṃbhavet | yādṛśṃrākṣasendrasyavapuretatprakāśate ||6.59.28||

Translation

देवदावनवीराणाम् among the Devas and Danavas, वपुः brilliance, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य Ravana's, एतत् such, वपुः brilliance, यादृशम् , प्रकाशते shines, एवंविधम् like this, नभवेत् not brightly.

Meaning

Among the Devas and Danavas such brilliance is not there. He shines so brightly.

YK-59-29Yuddha Kanda 59.29

सर्वेपर्वतसङ्काशास्सर्वेपर्वतयोधिनः । सर्वेदीप्तायुधधरायोधाश्चास्यमहोजस:।। 6.59.29।।

sarveparvatasaṅkāśāssarveparvatayodhinḥ | sarvedīptāyudhadharāyodhāścāsyamahojasa:|| 6.59.29||

Translation

महोजस: great warriors, अस्य of him, योधाः in war, सर्वे all, पर्वतसङ्काशाः like mountain, सर्वे all, पर्वतयोधिनः fight with mountains, सर्वे all, दीप्तायुधधराः glowing weapons.

Meaning

"The great warriors of Ravana fighting in war are like mountains and all fought with mountains and glowing weapons."

YK-59-30Yuddha Kanda 59.30

भातिरक्षोराजोऽसौप्रदीप्त्तैर्भीमविक्रमैः । भूतैःपरिवृतस्तीक्ष्णैर्देहवद्भिरिवान्तकः ।।6.59.30।।

bhātirakṣorājo'saupradīpttairbhīmavikramaiḥ | bhūtaiḥparivṛtastīkṣṇairdehavadbhirivāntakḥ ||6.59.30||

Translation

प्रदीप्त्तै: shining brilliance, भीमविक्रमैः of terrible valour, तीक्ष्णैः sharp, देहवद्भिः furious forms, परिवृत surrounded by, भूतैः beings, असौ oh, रक्षोराजः Rakshasa king, अन्तकःइव like god of death, भाति shining.

Meaning

"The Rakshasa king is surrounded by sharp, furious beings of terrible valour shining like the god of death."

YK-59-31Yuddha Kanda 59.31

दिष्ट्याऽयमद्यपापात्माममदृष्टिपथंगतः । अद्यक्रोधंविमोक्ष्यामिसीताहरणसम्भवम् ।।6.59.31।।

diṣṭyā'yamadyapāpātmāmamadṛṣṭipathṃgatḥ | adyakrodhṃvimokṣyāmisītāharaṇasambhavam ||6.59.31||

Translation

दिष्ट्या by good luck, पापात्मा sinful, अयम् he, मम my, दृष्टिपथम् my sight, गतः gone, अद्य come, सीताहरणसम्भवम् Sita's abduction, क्रोधम् wrath, विमोक्ष्यामि give vent.

Meaning

"By his good luck, this sinful one has come under my sight. I will give vent to my wrath born of Sita's abduction."

YK-59-32Yuddha Kanda 59.32

एवमुक्त्वाततोरामोधनुरादायवीर्यवान् । लक्ष्मणानुचरस्तस्थौसमुद्धृत्यशरोत्तमम् ।।6.59.32।।

evamuktvātatorāmodhanurādāyavīryavān | lakṣmaṇānucarastasthausamuddhṛtyaśarottamam ||6.59.32||

Translation

वीर्यवान् indomitable, रामः Rama, एवम् in that manner, उक्त्वा having spoken, ततः then, धनुः bow, आदाय taking out, शरोत्तमम् excellent, समुद्धृत्य got ready, लक्ष्मणानुचरः Lakshmana as follower, तस्थौ stood.

Meaning

Indomitable Rama having spoken in that manner, followed by Lakshmana got ready and took out an excellent bow and stood.

YK-59-33Yuddha Kanda 59.33

ततःसरक्षोधिपतिर्महात्मारक्षांसितान्याहमहाबलानि । द्वारेषुचर्यागृहगोपुरेषुसुनिर्वृतास्तिष्ठतनिर्विशङ्काः ।।6.59.33।।

tatḥsarakṣodhipatirmahātmārakṣāṃsitānyāhamahābalāni | dvāreṣucaryāgṛhagopureṣusunirvṛtāstiṣṭhatanirviśaṅkāḥ ||6.59.33||

Translation

ततः thereupon, महात्मा great soul, सः he, रक्षोधिपतिः Rakshasa king, महाबलानि strong army, तानि them, रक्षांसि Rakshasas, आह you, द्वारेषु at gates, चर्यागृहगोपुरेणु buildings on the four main streets, सुनिर्वृताः fully complacent, निर्विशङ्काः free from apprehension, तिष्ठत stationed.

Meaning

There upon the great soul, the king of Rakshasas thus spoke to the strong army of Rakshasas, "Fully complacent, free from any apprehension be stationed at the gates and the buildings of the four main streets."

YK-59-34Yuddha Kanda 59.34

हाऽगतंमांसहितंभवद्भिर्वनौकसश्छिद्रमिदंविदित्वा । शून्यापुरींदुष्प्रसहांप्रमथ्यप्रधर्षयेयुस्सहसासमेताः ।।6.59.34।।

hā'gatṃmāṃsahitṃbhavadbhirvanaukasaśchidramidṃviditvā | śūnyāpurīṃduṣprasahāṃpramathyapradharṣayeyussahasāsametāḥ ||6.59.34||

Translation

भवद्भिः me also, सहितम् with you, माम् me, इह here, आगतम् coming to know my coming, इदम् this, छिद्रम् weak side, विदित्वा knowing, वनौकसः forest dwellers, समेताः together, दुष्प्रसहाम् enter, शून्याम् vacant, पुरीम् City, प्रमथ्य Devastate, सहसा united, प्रधर्षयेयुः storm.

Meaning

"Coming to know that I am here with you, this side, considering it to be a weak point, the forest dwellers may enter the vacant city and Devastate all united."

YK-59-35Yuddha Kanda 59.35

विसर्जयित्वासचिवांस्ततस्तान्गतेषुरक्षस्सुयथानियोगम् । व्यचारयद्वानरसागरौघंमहाझषःपूर्णमिवार्णवौघम् ।।6.59.35।।

visarjayitvāsacivāṃstatastāngateṣurakṣassuyathāniyogam | vyacārayadvānarasāgaraughṃmahājhaṣḥpūrṇamivārṇavaugham ||6.59.35||

Translation

तान् them, सचिवान् counsellors, विसर्जयित्वा sent away, ततः there upon, रक्षःसु Rakshasa, यथानियोगम् as instructed, गतेषु having departed, वानरसागरौघम् ocean of Vanaras, महाझषः gigantic fish, पूर्णम् totally, अर्णवौघम् इव like the war in the ocean, व्यदारयत् pierced through.

Meaning

After the counsellors departed from there Ravana pierced through the ocean of Vanaras just as gigantic fish would pierce in the sea.

YK-59-36Yuddha Kanda 59.36

तमापतन्तंसहसासमीक्ष्यदीप्तेषुचापंयुधिराक्षसेन्द्रम् । महत्समुत्पाट्यमहीधराग्रंदुद्रावरक्षोधिपतिंहरीशः ।।6.59.36।।

tamāpatantṃsahasāsamīkṣyadīpteṣucāpṃyudhirākṣasendram | mahatsamutpāṭyamahīdharāgrṃdudrāvarakṣodhipatiṃharīśḥ ||6.59.36||

Translation

युधि on the battlefield, सहसा speedily, आपतन्तम् advancing suddenly, दीप्तेषुचापम् with radiant bow, राक्षसेन्द्रम् Rakshasa king, समीक्ष्य watching, हरीशः monkey, महत् great, महीधराग्रम् huge mountain top, समुत्पाट्य lifting up, रक्षोधिपतिम् towards Rakshasa king, दुद्राव went.

Meaning

Watching Ravana advancing suddenly on the battlefield with great speed, Sugriva took a huge mountain top and went towards Rakshasa king.

YK-59-37Yuddha Kanda 59.37

तच्छैलशृङ्गंबहुवृक्षसानुंप्रगृह्यचिक्षेपनिशाचराय । तमापतन्तंसहसासमीक्ष्यचिच्छेदबाणैस्तपनीयपुङ्खैः ।।6.59.37।।

tacchailaśṛṅgṃbahuvṛkṣasānuṃpragṛhyacikṣepaniśācarāya | tamāpatantṃsahasāsamīkṣyacicchedabāṇaistapanīyapuṅkhaiḥ ||6.59.37||

Translation

बहुवृक्षसानुम् whose slopes were crowded with many trees, तत् that, शैलशृङ्गम् mountain top, प्रगृह्य seizing, निशाचराय at night rangers, चिक्षेप hurled, आपतन्तम् towards, तम् him, समीक्ष्य watching, सहसा quickly, तपनीयपुङ्खैः arrows with gold shafts, बाणैः arrows, चिच्छेद broke.

Meaning

Seizing mountain tops whose slopes were filled with trees Sugriva hurled at the night rangers. Watching this Ravana quickly broke them with his arrows fixed with golden shafts.

YK-59-38Yuddha Kanda 59.38

तस्मिन् प्रवृद्धोत्तमसानुवृक्षेशृङ्गेविकीर्णेपतितेपृथिव्याम् । महाहिकल्पंशरमन्तकाभंसमादधेराक्षसलोकनाथः ।।6.59.38।।

tasmin pravṛddhottamasānuvṛkṣeśṛṅgevikīrṇepatitepṛthivyām | mahāhikalpṃśaramantakābhṃsamādadherākṣasalokanāthḥ ||6.59.38||

Translation

तस्मिन् in that, प्रवृद्धोत्तमसानुवृक्षे slope covered with excellent trees, शृङ्गे peak, विदीर्णे broken, पृथिव्याम् on the ground, पतिते fallen, राक्षसलोकनाथः king of Rakshasa world, महाहिकल्पम् arranging for destruction, अन्तकाभम् like the spirit of death, शरम् arrow, समादधे got ready.

Meaning

After that slope covered with excellent trees had fallen on the ground and broken, Ravana got readied with an arrow as if for arranging destruction like the spirit of death.

YK-59-39Yuddha Kanda 59.39

सतंगृहीत्वाऽनिलतुल्यवेगंसविस्फुलिङ्गज्वलनप्रकाशम् । बाणंमहेन्द्राशनितुल्यवेगंचिक्षेपसुग्रीववधायरुष्टः ।।6.59.39।।

satṃgṛhītvā'nilatulyavegṃsavisphuliṅgajvalanaprakāśam | bāṇṃmahendrāśanitulyavegṃcikṣepasugrīvavadhāyaruṣṭḥ ||6.59.39||

Translation

रुष्टः angry, सः he, अनिलतुल्यवेगम् like the wind in speed, सविस्फुलिङ्गज्वलनप्रकाशम् shone like sparks of fire, महेन्द्राशनितुल्यवेगम् vied with thunderbolt of Indra in speed, तंबाणम् that arrow, गृहीत्वा seizing, सुग्रीववधाय for the destruction of Sugriva, चिक्षेप released.

Meaning

Seizing an arrow which shone like sparks of fire and had the speed of wind, nay vied with thunderbolt of Indra in speed, he (Ravana) released an arrow in anger.

YK-59-40Yuddha Kanda 59.40

ससायकोरावणबाहुमुक्तःशक्राशनिप्रख्यवपुश्शिताग्रः । सुग्रीवमासाद्यबिभेदवेगाद्गुहेरिताक्रौञ्चमिवोग्रशक्तिः ।।6.59.40।।

sasāyakorāvaṇabāhumuktḥśakrāśaniprakhyavapuśśitāgrḥ | sugrīvamāsādyabibhedavegādguheritākrauñcamivograśaktiḥ ||6.59.40||

Translation

रावणबाहुमुक्तः released from Ravana's arms, सःसायकः that arrow, शक्रशनिप्रख्यवपुः hard and sharp like Indra's thunderbolt, शिताग्रः sharp thorn edged spear, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, आसाद्य reaching, गुहेरिता like Guha's, उग्रशक्तिः fierce, क्रौञ्चमिव Krauncha like, वेगात् violently, बिभेद pierced.

Meaning

That arrow released from Ravana's arm, which was hard and sharp as the thunderbolt of Indra, pierced Sugriva just as the sharp thorn edged spear of Guha penetrated Krauncha mountain.

YK-59-41Yuddha Kanda 59.41

ससायकार्तोविपरीतचेताःकूजन्पृथिव्यांनिपपातवीरः । तंप्रेक्ष्यभूमौपतितंविसंज्ञंनेदुःप्रहृष्टायुधियातुधानाः ।।6.59.41।।

sasāyakārtoviparītacetāḥkūjanpṛthivyāṃnipapātavīrḥ | tṃprekṣyabhūmaupatitṃvisṃjñṃneduḥprahṛṣṭāyudhiyātudhānāḥ ||6.59.41||

Translation

सःवीरः that hero, सायकार्तः hurt by arrow, विपरीतचेताः lost sense, कूजन् groaning, पृथिव्याम् on the ground, निपपात fell, युधि in battle, विसंज्ञम् sent forth, भूमौ on the ground, पतितम् fallen, तम् they, प्रेक्ष्य seeing, यातुधानाः an evil spirit, प्रहृष्टाः joyfully, नेदुः shouted.

Meaning

That hero (Sugriva) hurt by the arrow lost senses and fell on the ground groaning in the battlefield. Seeing that the Rakshasas shouted joyfully overtaken by evil spirits.

YK-59-42Yuddha Kanda 59.42

ततोगवाक्षोगवयस्सुदंष्ट्रस्त्वथर्षभोज्योतिमुखोनलश्च । शैलान् समुत्पाट्यविवृद्धकायाःप्रदुद्रुवुस्तंप्रतिराक्षसेन्द्रम् ।।6.59.42।।

tatogavākṣogavayassudṃṣṭrastvatharṣabhojyotimukhonalaśca | śailān samutpāṭyavivṛddhakāyāḥpradudruvustṃpratirākṣasendram ||6.59.42||

Translation

ततः thereafter, गवाक्षः Gavaksha, गवयः Gavaya, सुदंष्ट्र Sudamshtra, अथ and, ऋषभः Rshaba, ज्योतिमुखः Jyothimukha, नलश्च Nala, शैलान् rock, समुत्पाट्य taking mountains, विवृद्धकायाः raising their body size, तम् they, राक्षसेन्द्रंप्रति over the king of Rakshasas, प्रदुद्रुवुः rushed.

Meaning

Thereafter Gavaksha, Gavaya, Sudamshtra, Rshaba, Jyothimukha and Nala increasing their body size rushed towards the king of Rakshasas.

YK-59-43Yuddha Kanda 59.43

तेषांप्रहारान् सचकारमोघान् रक्षोधिपोबाणशतैःशिताग्रैः । तान्वानरेन्द्रानपिबाणजालैर्बिभेदजाम्बूनदचित्रपुङ्खैः ।।6.59.43।।

teṣāṃprahārān sacakāramoghān rakṣodhipobāṇaśataiḥśitāgraiḥ | tānvānarendrānapibāṇajālairbibhedajāmbūnadacitrapuṅkhaiḥ ||6.59.43||

Translation

सःरक्षोधिपः the Rakshasa Lord, शिताग्रैः mountain peaks, बाणशतैः hundreds of arrows, तेषाम् by that, प्रहारान् released, मोघान् useless, चकार resist, जाम्बूनदचित्रपुङ्खैः arrows with golden shafts, बाणजालैः streams of arrows, तान् them, वानरेन्द्रानपि even Vanara king, बिभेद struck.

Meaning

The Rakshasa Lord made the mountain peaks useless by the hundreds of arrows released by him. The streams of arrows with golden shafts could resist the Rakshasas and strike the Vanara king.

YK-59-44Yuddha Kanda 59.44

तेवानरेन्द्रास्त्रिदशारिबाणैर्भिन्नानिपेतुर्भुविभीमकायाः । ततस्तुतद्वानरसैन्यमुग्रंप्रच्छादयामाससबाणजालैः ।।6.59.44।।

tevānarendrāstridaśāribāṇairbhinnānipeturbhuvibhīmakāyāḥ | tatastutadvānarasainyamugrṃpracchādayāmāsasabāṇajālaiḥ ||6.59.44||

Translation

भीमकायाः fierce form, तेवानरेन्द्राः of that Vanara leaders, त्रिदशारिबाणैः in the three directions, भिन्नाः torn, भुवि ground, निपेतुः fell, ततः that, सः he, बाणजालैः streams of arrows, उग्रम् sharp, तत् वानरसैन्यम् the army of Vanaras, प्रच्छादयामास covered.

Meaning

The Vanara leaders of fierce form torn by the streams of sharp arrows discharged in the three directions fell covering the ground.

YK-59-45Yuddha Kanda 59.45

तेवध्यमानाःपतिताःप्रवीरानानद्यमानाभयशल्यविद्धाः । शाखामृगारावणसायकार्ताजग्मुश्शरण्यंशरणंस्मरामम् ।।6.59.45।।

tevadhyamānāḥpatitāḥpravīrānānadyamānābhayaśalyaviddhāḥ | śākhāmṛgārāvaṇasāyakārtājagmuśśaraṇyṃśaraṇṃsmarāmam ||6.59.45||

Translation

वध्यमानाः those struck, पतिताः fallen, नावद्यमानाः shrieking, भयशल्यविद्धाः fear of pain by piercing, प्रवीराः heroes, तेशाखामृगाः the monkeys, रावणसायकार्ताः pressed by Ravana's arrows, शरण्यम् refuge रामम् Rama, शरणंजुग्मुः went to seek refuge.

Meaning

Those monkeys struck and fallen by the piercing of arrows shrieking went to seek refuge from Rama.

YK-59-46Yuddha Kanda 59.46

ततोमहात्मासधनुर्धनुष्मानादायरामस्सहसाजगाम । तंलक्ष्मणःप्राञ्जलिरभ्युपेत्यउवाचवाक्यंपरमार्थयुक्तम् ।।6.59.46।।

tatomahātmāsadhanurdhanuṣmānādāyarāmassahasājagāma | tṃlakṣmaṇḥprāñjalirabhyupetyauvācavākyṃparamārthayuktam ||6.59.46||

Translation

ततः that, महात्मा great soul, धनुष्मान् holding bow, सःरामः that Rama, धनुः bow, आदाय taking, सहसा immediately, जगाम went, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, तम् him, अभ्युपेत्य addressed, प्राञ्जलिः with folded hand s, परमार्थयुक्तम् consonant with truth, वाक्यम् words, उवाच spoken.

Meaning

The great soul Rama who was holding a bow went seizing it. Lakshmana approached him immediately with folded hands and addressed Rama with words consonant with truth.

YK-59-47Yuddha Kanda 59.47

काममार्यस्सुपर्याप्तोवधायास्यदुरात्मनः । विधमिष्याम्यहंचैतमनुजानीहिमांविभो ।।6.59.47।।

kāmamāryassuparyāptovadhāyāsyadurātmanḥ | vidhamiṣyāmyahṃcaitamanujānīhimāṃvibho ||6.59.47||

Translation

दुरात्मनः evil minded, अस्य his, वधाय destruction, आर्यः noble, सुपर्याप्तःकामम् complete the task, विभो glory, अहम् I, एतम् thus, विधमिष्यामि will exterminate, माम् me, अनुजानीहि I may be permitted.

Meaning

"I will exterminate the evil minded Ravana. Oh! noble brother, may I be permitted to complete the task"

YK-59-48Yuddha Kanda 59.48

तमब्रवीन्महातेजारामस्सत्यपराक्रमः । गच्छयत्नपरश्चापिभवलक्ष्मण संयुगे ।।6.59.48।।

tamabravīnmahātejārāmassatyaparākramḥ | gacchayatnaparaścāpibhavalakṣmaṇa sṃyuge ||6.59.48||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, सत्यपराक्रमः truthful in enthusiasm to succeed, महातेजाः highly energetic, रामः Rama, तम् to him, अब्रवीत् said, गच्छ going, संयुगे in the battle, यत्नपरश्चापि be careful, भव you.

Meaning

Sri Rama, who was highly energetic and truthful in enthusiasm to succeed, told Lakshmana, "You go and be careful in the battle."

YK-59-49Yuddha Kanda 59.49

रावणोहिमहावीर्योरणेऽद्भुतपराक्रमः । त्रैलोक्येनापिसङ्क्रुद्धोदुष्प्रसह्योनसंशयः ।।6.59.49।।

rāvaṇohimahāvīryoraṇe'dbhutaparākramḥ | trailokyenāpisaṅkruddhoduṣprasahyonasṃśayḥ ||6.59.49||

Translation

Translation

तस्य his, छिद्राणि arrows, मार्गस्व in the direction of, स्वच्छिद्राणि your arrows, लक्ष्य aim, समाहितः being alert, चक्षुषा your sight, धनुषा bow, यत्ना making effort, आत्मानम् yourself.

Meaning

"Remaining alert, apply your arrows in the direction of his arrows. Looking at his arrows carefully, making an effort to protect yourself, set your bow."

YK-59-51Yuddha Kanda 59.51

राघवस्यवचश्श्रुत्वासपरिष्वज्याभिपूज्यच । अभिवाद्यतत् रामंययौसौमित्रिराहवम् ।।6.59.51।।

Translation

Meaning

On hearing Raghava's words, son of Sumitra embraced him and offered prayers, paying respects sallied forth for the encounter.

YK-59-52Yuddha Kanda 59.52

सरावणंवारणहस्तबाहुंददर्शभीमोद्यतदीप्तचापम् । प्रच्छादयन्तंशरवृष्टिजालैस्तान्वानराभनिन्नविकीर्णदेहान् ।।6.59.52।।

sarāvaṇṃvāraṇahastabāhuṃdadarśabhīmodyatadīptacāpam | pracchādayantṃśaravṛṣṭijālaistānvānarābhaninnavikīrṇadehān ||6.59.52||

Translation

सः he, वारणहस्तबाहुम् endowed with elephant trunk like round shoulders, भीमोद्यतदीप्तचापम् fierce bow glowing, भिन्नविकीर्णदेहान् broken bodies of Vanaras spread over, तान् them, वानरान् Vanaras, शरवृष्टिजालैः showering net of arrows, प्रच्छादयन्तम् instigating, रावणम् Ravana, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

He saw Ravana, endowed with round shoulders like elephant trunks, with fierce bow glowing and the broken bodies of Vanaras spread all over. Ravana was showering nets of arrows and instigating vanaras.

YK-59-53Yuddha Kanda 59.53

तमालोक्यमहातेजाहनूमान्मारुतात्मजः । निवार्यशरजालानिप्रदुद्रावसरावणम् ।।6.59.53।।

tamālokyamahātejāhanūmānmārutātmajḥ | nivāryaśarajālānipradudrāvasarāvaṇam ||6.59.53||

Translation

महातेजाः very brilliant, मारुतात्मजः son of wind god, सः he, हनूमान् Hanuman, तम् him, आलोक्य seeing, शरजालानि stream of arrows, निवार्य obstructing, रावणम् Ravana, प्रदुद्राव darted towards.

Meaning

The son of the wind god, Hanuman, a brilliant one seeing Ravana, obstructed the stream of arrows and darted towards him.

YK-59-54Yuddha Kanda 59.54

रथंतस्यसमासाद्यबाहुमुद्यम्यदक्षिणम् । त्रासयन्रावणंधीमान्हनूमान्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।।6.59.54।।

Courageous Hanuman seeing the chariot of Ravana lifting his right arm menacing him spoke these words.

YK-59-55Yuddha Kanda 59.55

देवदानवगन्धर्वायक्षाश्चसहराक्षैसैः । अवश्यंतुत्वयाभग्नावानरेभ्यस्तुतेभयम् ।।6.59.55।।

devadānavagandharvāyakṣāścasaharākṣaisaiḥ | avaśyṃtutvayābhagnāvānarebhyastutebhayam ||6.59.55||

Translation

देवदावनगन्धर्वैः gods, demons and Gandharvas, सहराक्षसैः along with Rakshasas, यक्षैश्च Yakshas also, अवश्यंतु surely, त्वया by you, भग्ना death, ते to you, वानरेभ्यस्तु from Vanaras also, भयम् fear.

Meaning

"Your life is surely secure from gods, demons, Gandharvas and Yakshas and Rakshasas but you fear Vanaras."

YK-59-56Yuddha Kanda 59.56

एषमेदक्षिणोबाहुःपञ्चशाखःसमुद्यतः । विधमिष्यतितेदेहाद्भूतात्मानंचिरोषितम् ।।6.59.56।।

eṣamedakṣiṇobāhuḥpañcaśākhḥsamudyatḥ | vidhamiṣyatitedehādbhūtātmānṃciroṣitam ||6.59.56||

Translation

मे I, पञ्चशाखः five branches, एषः that way, समुद्यतः together, दक्षिणःबाहुः right arm, ते to you, देहात् body, चिरोषितम् for long, भूतात्मानम् subtle body, विधमिष्यति will expel.

Meaning

"I raised this right arm that way with five branches (five fingers) at you that will expel your subtle self (made up of the five subtle elements) from your body."

YK-59-57Yuddha Kanda 59.57

श्रुत्वाहनुमतोवाक्यंरावणोभीमविक्रमः । संरक्तनयनःक्रोधादिदंवचनमब्रवीत् ।।6.59.57।।

Translation

भीमविक्रमः truly fierce, रावणः Ravana, हनुमतः Hanuman's, वाक्यम् words, श्रुत्वा hearing, क्रोधात् in anger, संरक्तनयनः with blood red eyes, इदम् thus, वचनम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Ravana of truly fierce valour, hearing Hanuman's words, his eyes became blood red and spoke to Hanuman this way.

YK-59-58Yuddha Kanda 59.58

क्षिप्रंप्रहरनिःशङ्कंस्थिरांकीर्तिमवाप्नुहि । ततस्त्वांज्ञातविक्रान्तंनाशयिष्यामिवानर ।।6.59.58।।

kṣiprṃpraharaniḥśaṅkṃsthirāṃkīrtimavāpnuhi | tatastvāṃjñātavikrāntṃnāśayiṣyāmivānara ||6.59.58||

Translation

वानर Vanara, निःशङ्कम् without any hesitation, क्षिप्रम् at once, प्रहर go about, स्थिराम् permanent, कीर्तिम् fame, अवाप्नुहि will attain, ततः thereafter, ज्ञातविक्रान्तम् knowing your prowess, त्वाम् you, नाशयिष्यामि shall destroy.

Meaning

"O Vanara! Go about without any hesitation. Attain the fame of a Vanara hitting Ravana permanently. Thereafter knowing your prowess, I shall put an end to you."

YK-59-59Yuddha Kanda 59.59

रावणस्यवचश्श्रुत्वावायुसूनुर्वचोऽब्रवीत् । प्रहृतंहिमयापूर्वमक्षंतवसुतंतव ।।6.59.59।।

Translation

रावणस्य Ravana's, वचः words, श्रुत्वा hearing, वायुसूनुः son of wind god, वचः words, अब्रवीत् spoke, मया by me, पूर्वम् earlier, प्रहृतम् killed, तवसुतम् your son, अक्षम् Akshaya, तव your.

Meaning

Having heard Ravana's words, Hanuman said, "Think of your son Akshaya killed by me earlier."

YK-59-60Yuddha Kanda 59.60

एवमुक्तोमहातेजारावणोराक्षसेश्वरः । आजघानानिलसुतंतलेनोरसिवीर्यवान् ।।6.59.60।।

evamuktomahātejārāvaṇorākṣaseśvarḥ | ājaghānānilasutṃtalenorasivīryavān ||6.59.60||

Translation

एवम् that manner, उक्तः having spoken, महातेजाः highly energetic, वीर्यवान् valiant, राक्षसेश्वरः Rakshasa Lord, रावणः Ravana, अनिलसुतम् son of wind god, तलेन with hand, उरसि on the chest, आजघान slapped.

Meaning

Having spoken that way by Hanuman, the Lord of Rakshasas slapped his hand on Hanuman's chest.

YK-59-61Yuddha Kanda 59.61

सतलाभिहतस्तेनचचालचमुहुर्मुहुः । स्थित्वामुहूर्तंतेजस्वीस्थैर्यंकृत्वामहामतिः ।।6.59.61।। आजघानाभिसङ्कृद्धस्तलेनैवामरद्विषम् ।

satalābhihatastenacacālacamuhurmuhuḥ | sthitvāmuhūrtṃtejasvīsthairyṃkṛtvāmahāmatiḥ ||6.59.61|| ājaghānābhisaṅkṛddhastalenaivāmaradviṣam |

Translation

तेन by him, तलाभिहतः smacked by, सः he (Hanuman), मुहुर्मुहुः again and again, चचालच with hand, तेजस्वी brilliant, महामतिः intellectual, मुहूर्तम् for a minute, स्थित्वा stood firm, स्थैर्यम् picking up courage, अभि very, कृत्वा did, सङ्कृद्धः enraged, तलेनैव with his palm, अमरद्विषम् enemy of gods, आजघान struck.

Meaning

Smacked by him (Ravana), Hanuman, a brilliant and intelligent one stood firm for a while and picking up courage, highly enraged struck the enemy of gods with his palm.

YK-59-62Yuddha Kanda 59.62

ततस्ततेनाभिहतोवानरेणमहात्मना ।।6.59.62।। दशग्रीवःसमाधूतोयथाभूमिचलेऽचलः ।

tatastatenābhihatovānareṇamahātmanā ||6.59.62|| daśagrīvḥsamādhūtoyathābhūmicale'calḥ |

Translation

ततः thereupon, महात्मना great soul, तेनवानरेण by the Vanara, अभिहतः struck, दशग्रीवः ten headed, भूमिचले shaken like an earthquake, अचलःयथा like mountain, समाधूतः shaken together, तते afterwards.

Meaning

Thereupon, struck by the great soul, Vanara, the ten headed Ravana was shaken like the earthquake on the mountain together.

YK-59-63Yuddha Kanda 59.63

सङ्ग्रामेतंतथादृष्टवारावणंतलताडितम् ।।6.59.63।। ऋषयोवानराःसिद्धानेदुर्देवास्सहासुरैः ।

saṅgrāmetṃtathādṛṣṭavārāvaṇṃtalatāḍitam ||6.59.63|| ṛṣayovānarāḥsiddhānedurdevāssahāsuraiḥ |

Translation

सङ्ग्रामे in that war, तथा that way, तलताडितम् hit by hand, तंरावणम् that Ravana, दृष्टवा hard, ऋषयः sages, वानराः Vanara, सिद्धाः siddhas, असुरैःसह demons as well, देवा Devas, नेदुः shouted.

Meaning

Ravana hit by hand in that way in a hard manner, the siddhas, demons as well and even Devatas raised their voice.

YK-59-64Yuddha Kanda 59.64

अथाऽश्वास्यमहातेजारावणोवाक्यमब्रवीत् ।।6.59.64।। साधुवानर वीर्येणश्लाघनीयोऽसिमेरिपुः ।

athā'śvāsyamahātejārāvaṇovākyamabravīt ||6.59.64|| sādhuvānara vīryeṇaślāghanīyo'simeripuḥ |

Translation

अथ and then, महातेजाः extremely energetic, रावणः Ravana, आश्वास्य from breath, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke, वानर Vanara, साधु well done, वीर्येण courageous, श्लाघनीय praise worthy, मेरिपुः my enemy, असि you are.

Meaning

And thereafter, thus spoke extremely energetic Ravana recovering from breath, "Well done vanara. You are courageous and praiseworthy, my enemy!"

YK-59-65Yuddha Kanda 59.65

रावणेनैवमुक्तस्तुमारुतिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।।6.59.65।। धिगस्तुममवीर्येणयस्त्वंजीवसिरावण ।

rāvaṇenaivamuktastumārutirvākyamabravīt ||6.59.65|| dhigastumamavīryeṇayastvṃjīvasirāvaṇa |

Translation

रावणेन by Ravana, एवम् in that way, उक्तः spoken, मारुतिः Maruti, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् said, रावण Ravana, मम my, वीर्येण valour, धिक् अस्तु What a shame, यत् that, त्वम् your, जीवसि survived.

Meaning

Ravana having spoken in that way, Maruti said "Oh Ravana! What a shame on my valour, you survived."

YK-59-66Yuddha Kanda 59.66

सकृत्तुप्रहरेदानींदुर्भुद्धे किंविकत्थसे ।।6.59.66।। ततस्त्वांमामिकामुष्टिर्नयिष्यतियमक्षयम् ।

sakṛttupraharedānīṃdurbhuddhe kiṃvikatthase ||6.59.66|| tatastvāṃmāmikāmuṣṭirnayiṣyatiyamakṣayam |

Translation

दुर्भुद्धे evil minded, किंविकत्थसे why do you brag, इदानीम् like this, सकृत् once more you do, प्रहर strike, ततः then, मामिकः I will once again, मुष्टिः fist, त्वाम् you, यमक्षयम् to the abode of Yama, नयिष्यति I wish.

Meaning

"O evil minded one, why do you brag You do this once more I will strike you once again with my fist and send you to the abode of Yama."

तोमारतिवाक्येनकोधस्तस्यतदाऽज्वलत् ।।6.59.67।। संरक्तनयनोयत्नान्मुष्टिमुद्यम्यदक्षिणम् । पातयामासवेगेनवानरोरसिवीर्यवान् ।।6.59.68।।

tomārativākyenakodhastasyatadā'jvalat ||6.59.67|| sṃraktanayanoyatnānmuṣṭimudyamyadakṣiṇam | pātayāmāsavegenavānarorasivīryavān ||6.59.68||

Translation

ततः then, मारुतिवाक्येन consequent to Maruti's words, तदा then, तस्य his, कोधः anger, अज्वलत् burning, संरक्तनयनः red eyes, यत्नात् effort, दक्षिणम् right, मुष्टिम् fist, उद्यम्य lifting, वीर्यवान् powerful, वेगेन instantly, वानरोरपि Vanara's enemy, पातयामास brought down.

Meaning

Consequent to Maruti speaking like that, Ravana's eyes turned red, burning with anger. The powerful Ravana lifted his right fist instantly and brought it down on his powerful enemy.

YK-59-69Yuddha Kanda 59.69

हनूमान् वक्षसिव्यूढेसञ्चचालहतःपुनः । विह्वलंतुतदादृष्टवाहनूमन्तंमहाबलम् ।।6.59.69।। रथेनातिरथशशीघ्रंनीलंप्रतिसमभ्यगात् ।

hanūmān vakṣasivyūḍhesañcacālahatḥpunḥ | vihvalṃtutadādṛṣṭavāhanūmantṃmahābalam ||6.59.69|| rathenātirathaśaśīghrṃnīlṃpratisamabhyagāt |

Translation

व्यूढे hit, वक्षसि on chest, हनूमान् Hanuman, हतःपुनः again hurt, सञ्चचाल reeled, विह्वलम् overcome with fear, महाबलम् very powerful, तंहनूमन्तम् that Hanuman, दृष्टवा seeing, अतिरथः best charioteer, रथेन chariot, शीघ्रम् quickly, नीलंप्रति towards Neela, समभ्यगात् drove.

Meaning

Hit on his chest, Hanuman got hurt again and reeled. Seeing Hanuman's power, overcome with fear, the best charioteer Ravana drove quickly towards Neela.

YK-59-70-71Yuddha Kanda 59.70–71 (युग्मम्)

राक्षसानामधिपतिर्धशग्रीवःप्रतापवान् ।।6.59.70।। पन्नगप्रतिमैर्भीमैःपरमर्माभिभेदिभिः । शरैरादीपयामासनीलंहरिचमूपतिम् ।।6.59.71।।

rākṣasānāmadhipatirdhaśagrīvḥpratāpavān ||6.59.70|| pannagapratimairbhīmaiḥparamarmābhibhedibhiḥ | śarairādīpayāmāsanīlṃharicamūpatim ||6.59.71||

Translation

राक्षसानाम् for Rakshasas, अधिपतिः Lord, प्रतापवान् indomitable, दशग्रीवः ten headed, पन्नगप्रतिमैः resembling serpents, भीमैः dreadful, परमर्माभिभेदनैः which can pierce through vital parts, शरैः arrows, हरिचमूपतिम् leader of monkeys, नीलम् Nila, आदीपयामास began to strike.

Meaning

The ten headed indomitable Lord of Rakshasas with his arrows that resembled serpents, dreadful, capable of piercing into vital parts began to strike at Neela, the leader of monkeys.

YK-59-72Yuddha Kanda 59.72

सशरौघसमायस्तोनीलःकपिचमूपतिः । करेणेकैनेशैलाग्रंरक्षोधिपतयेऽसृजत् ।।6.59.72।।

saśaraughasamāyastonīlḥkapicamūpatiḥ | kareṇekaineśailāgrṃrakṣodhipataye'sṛjat ||6.59.72||

Translation

शरौघसमायस्तः pressurized by streams of arrows, कपिचमूपतिः monkey leader, सःनीलः that Nila, एकेन alone, करेण tearing up, शैलाग्रम् mountain peak, रक्षोधिपतये on the Rakshasa Lord, असृजत् hurled.

Meaning

Pressured by the streams of arrows, the monkey leader, Neela single handed took up a peak of a mountain and hurled at the Lord of Rakshasas.

YK-59-73-74Yuddha Kanda 59.73–74 (युग्मम्)

हनूमानपितेजस्वीसमाश्वस्तोमहामनाः । विप्रेक्षमाणोयुद्धेप्सुस्सरोषमिदमब्रवीत् ।।6.59.73।। नीलेनसहसंयुक्तंरावणंराक्षसेश्वरम् । अन्येनयुद्यमानस्यनयुक्तमभिधावनम् ।।6.59.74।।

hanūmānapitejasvīsamāśvastomahāmanāḥ | viprekṣamāṇoyuddhepsussaroṣamidamabravīt ||6.59.73|| nīlenasahasṃyuktṃrāvaṇṃrākṣaseśvaram | anyenayudyamānasyanayuktamabhidhāvanam ||6.59.74||

Translation

तेजस्वी energetic, महामनाः great minded, हनूमानपि Hanuman, समाश्वस्तः became alert, युद्धेप्सुः seeking a fight, विप्रेक्षमाणः gazing, नीलेनसह Nila, संसक्तम् feeling fresh, राक्षसेश्वरम् to Rakshasa Lord, रावणम् Ravana, सरोषम् angrily, इदम् thus, अब्रवीत् spoke, अन्येन with other, युध्यमानस्य doing a fight, अभिधावनम् attack, नयुक्तम् not correct.

Meaning

Endowed with a great mind and energetic Hanuman became alert and seeking to fight with Ravana, feeling fresh, enraged, looking at Nila said "It is not correct to attack one who is fighting with another."

रावणोऽपिमहातेजास्तंच्छृङ्गंसप्तभिःशरैः । आजघानसुतीक्ष्णाग्रैस्तद्विकीर्णंपपातह ।।6.59.75।।

rāvaṇo'pimahātejāstṃcchṛṅgṃsaptabhiḥśaraiḥ | ājaghānasutīkṣṇāgraistadvikīrṇṃpapātaha ||6.59.75||

Translation

अथ and then, महातेजाः endowed with extraordinary energy, रावणः Ravana, तंशृङ्गम् that peak, सुतीक्ष्णाग्रैः with sharp arrows, सप्तभिः seven, शरैः arrows, आजघान attacked, तत् then, विकीर्णं broken, पपातह fell.

Meaning

Ravana, endowed with extraordinary energy attacked that peak hurled by Neela with seven sharp arrows and it fell broken into pieces.

YK-59-76Yuddha Kanda 59.76

तद्विकीर्णंगिरेश्शृङ्गंदृष्टवाहरिचमूपतिः । कालानगिरिवजज्वालकोपेनपरवीरहा ।।6.59.76।।

Translation

परवीरहा killer of stupendous foes, चमूपतिः leader, विकीर्णम् broken, तत् that, गिरेःशृङ्गम् mountain peak, दृष्टवा seeing, कोपेन in anger, कालानगिरिव like fire at the universal destruction, जज्वाल shone.

Meaning

On seeing the crushed peak, Neela, the killer of stupendous foes, shone like fire at universal destruction in anger.

सोऽश्वकर्णान्धान् शालांश्चूताश्चापिसुपुष्पितान् । अन्यांश्चविविधान् वृक्षान्नीलश्चिक्षेपसंयुगे ।।6.59.77।।

Translation

सःनीलः that Neela, संयुगे in battle, अश्वकर्णान्धान् Aswakarana, शालान् Sala, सुपुष्पितान् in bloom, चूतानपि and Mango trees, अन्यान् and other, विविधान् several, वृक्षान् trees, चिक्षेप hurled.

Meaning

In the battle Neela hurled Aswakarana, Sala and Mango trees in good bloom and several other trees at Ravana.

सतान्वृक्षान् समासाद्यप्रतिचिच्छेदरावणः । अभ्यवर्षत्सुघोरेणशरवर्षेणपावकिम् ।।6.59.78।।

Translation

सःरावणः that Ravana, तान् those, वृक्षान् trees, प्रतिसमासाद्य broke in return, चिच्छेद broke, घोरेण formidable, शरवर्षेण rain of arrows, पावकिम् on son of fire god (Neela), अभ्यवर्षच्छ rained.

Meaning

Ravana broke those trees in return and showered rain of formidable arrows at Neela.

अभिवृष्टश्शरौघेणमेघेनेवमहाबलः । ह्रस्वंकृत्वाततोरूपंध्वजाग्रेनिपपातह ।।6.59.79।।

Translation

शरौघेण hail of shafts, मेघेनेव by cloud, अभिवृष्टः when rained, महाबलः mighty strong, ततः that, रूपम् form, ह्रस्वम् small size, कृत्वा reducing, ध्वजाग्रे top of bow, निपपातह landed.

Meaning

When Neela was covered by Ravana's arrows, it was just as clouds cover mountain peaks. Neela reduced his size and landed on top of Ravana's bow.

pāvakātmajamālokyadhvajāgresamavasthitam | jajvālarāvaṇḥkrodhāttatonīlonanādaca ||6.59.80||

Translation

ध्वजाग्रे on top of the post of bow, समवस्थितम् standing, पावकात्मजम् son of fire god, आलोक्य seeing, रावणः Ravana, क्रोधात् in anger, जज्वाल burning, ततः then, नीलः Neela, ननादच roared.

Meaning

Neela stood on top of the post of the bow of Ravana. On seeing that Ravana was burning in anger while Neela roared.

YK-59-81Yuddha Kanda 59.81

ध्वजाग्रेधनुषश्चाग्रेकिरीटाग्रेचतंहरिम् । लक्ष्मणोऽथहनूमांश्चदृष्टवारामश्चविस्मिताः ।।6.59.81।।

dhvajāgredhanuṣaścāgrekirīṭāgrecatṃharim | lakṣmaṇo'thahanūmāṃścadṛṣṭavārāmaścavismitāḥ ||6.59.81||

Translation

ध्वजाग्रे on top of bow, धनुषः unable to release the arrow from the bow, अग्रे top, किरीटाग्रेच on top of the crown, तंहरिम् that monkey, दृष्टवा seeing, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, अथ and then, हनुमांश्च and Hanuman, रामश्च Rama, विस्मिताः amazed.

Meaning

Then, when Ravana was unable to release the arrow from the bow on Neela, who was shifting from the top of the post to the crown. Seeing that Lakshmana, Rama and Hanuman were amazed.

YK-59-82Yuddha Kanda 59.82

रावणोऽपिमहातेजाःकपिलाघवविस्मितः । अस्त्रमाहारयामासदीप्तमाग्नेयमद्भुतम् ।।6.59.82।।

rāvaṇo'pimahātejāḥkapilāghavavismitḥ | astramāhārayāmāsadīptamāgneyamadbhutam ||6.59.82||

Translation

महातेजाः of extraordinary energy, रावणः Ravana, अपि also, कपिलाघवविस्मितः Nila's ability to move, दीप्तम् shining, अद्भुतम् wondered, आग्नेयम् shaft presided by fire god, अस्त्रम् , आहारयामास took up.

Meaning

Ravana endowed with extraordinary energy was also wonder struck at Neela's agility. Then he took up the shining shaft presided over by fire god.

YK-59-83Yuddha Kanda 59.83

ततस्तेचुक्रुशुर्हृष्टालब्दलक्षाःप्लवङ्गमाः । नीललाघवसम्भ्रान्तंदृष्टवारावणमाहवे ।।6.59.83।।

tatastecukruśurhṛṣṭālabdalakṣāḥplavaṅgamāḥ | nīlalāghavasambhrāntṃdṛṣṭavārāvaṇamāhave ||6.59.83||

Translation

ततः thereafter, आहवे war, नीललाघवसम्भ्रान्तम् agitated about Neela's feats, रावणम् Ravana, दृष्टवा seeing, लब्दलक्षाः having achieved their wish, तेप्लवङ्गमाः those monkeys, हृष्टाः cheerful, चुक्रुशुः shouted.

Meaning

Thereafter, seeing Neela's feat in the war, Ravana was agitated and the Vanaras were cheerful for having achieved their wish and shouted in joy.

YK-59-84Yuddha Kanda 59.84

वानराणांचनादेवसंरब्दोरावणस्तदा । सम्भ्रमाविष्टहृदयोनकिञ्चित्प्रत्यपद्यत ।।6.59.84।।

vānarāṇāṃcanādevasṃrabdorāvaṇastadā | sambhramāviṣṭahṛdayonakiñcitpratyapadyata ||6.59.84||

Translation

तदा then, वानराणाम् Vanaras, नादेन clamour, संरब्धः provoked, रावणः Ravana, सम्फ्रमाविष्टहृदयः heart filled with anger, किञ्चित् a little, नप्रत्यपद्यत not know what to do in turn.

Meaning

Provoked by the clamour of the vanaras, Ravana's heart was full of anger and did not know what to do.

YK-59-85Yuddha Kanda 59.85

आग्नेयेनाधसंयुक्तंगृहीत्वारावणश्शरम् । ध्वजशीर्षस्थितंसीलमुदैक्षतनिशाचरः ।।6.59.85।।

āgneyenādhasṃyuktṃgṛhītvārāvaṇaśśaram | dhvajaśīrṣasthitṃsīlamudaikṣataniśācarḥ ||6.59.85||

Translation

अध and then, निशाचरः night ranger, रावणः Ravana, आग्नेयेन arrow charged with fire, संयुक्तम् fitting, गृहीत्वा taking, ध्वजशीर्षस्थितम् resting on top of the bow, नीलम् Neela, उदैक्षत looked.

Meaning

And then the night ranger Ravana taking up, fitting the arrow charged with fire, looked at Neela resting on top of the bow.

YK-59-86Yuddha Kanda 59.86

ततोऽब्रवीन्महातेजारावणोराक्षसेश्वरः । कपेलाघवयुक्तोऽसिमाययापरयाऽनया ।।6.59.86।।

tato'bravīnmahātejārāvaṇorākṣaseśvarḥ | kapelāghavayukto'simāyayāparayā'nayā ||6.59.86||

Translation

ततः that, महातेजाः of extraordinary energy, राक्षसेश्वरः Rakshasa Lord, रावणः Ravana, अब्रवीत् said, कपे oh monkey, परया Further, अनया unfair, मायया deceptive, लाघवयुक्तः very tricky, असि you are.

Meaning

Ravana endowed with extraordinary energy said, "Oh monkey, you are unfair, very tricky and further deceptive."

YK-59-87Yuddha Kanda 59.87

जीवितंखलुरक्षस्वयदिशक्तोऽपिवानर । तानितान्यात्मरूपाणिसृजसित्वमनेकशः ।।6.59.87।।

jīvitṃkhalurakṣasvayadiśakto'pivānara | tānitānyātmarūpāṇisṛjasitvamanekaśḥ ||6.59.87||

Translation

वानर monkey, त्वम् your, अनेकशः many, तानितानि different, आत्मरूपाणि forms of you, सृजसि create, शक्तः have the ability, अपि also यदि which, जीवितम् life, रक्षस्वखलु save your life.

Meaning

"Oh monkey! You are taking different forms and doing different deeds. If you have the ability, save your life."

YK-59-88Yuddha Kanda 59.88

तथापित्वांमयामुक्तस्सायोकोऽस्त्रप्रयोजितः । जीवितंपरिरक्षन्तंजीविताद्भ्रंशयिष्यति ।।6.59.88।।

tathāpitvāṃmayāmuktassāyoko'straprayojitḥ | jīvitṃparirakṣantṃjīvitādbhrṃśayiṣyati ||6.59.88||

Translation

तथापि like that, मया by me, मुक्तः released, अस्त्रयोजितः charged with missile, सायकः arrow, जीवितम् life, परिरक्षन्तम् protecting, त्वाम् your, जीवितात् life, भ्रंशयिष्यति will destroy.

Meaning

"The arrow released by me now is charged with a missile and will destroy your life. You have been protecting (changing your forms) your life."

YK-59-89Yuddha Kanda 59.89

एवमुक्त्वामहाबाहूरावणोराक्षसेश्वरः । सन्धायबाणमस्त्रणचमूपतिमताडयत् ।।6.59.89।।

evamuktvāmahābāhūrāvaṇorākṣaseśvarḥ | sandhāyabāṇamastraṇacamūpatimatāḍayat ||6.59.89||

Translation

महाबाहुः broad shouldered, राक्षसेश्वरः Rakshasa king, रावणः Ravana, एवम् like that, उक्त्वा spoken, बाणम् arrow, अस्त्रण chanting the mantras, सन्धाय fixing the arrow, चमूपतिम् commander in chief, अताडयत् struck.

Meaning

Speaking like that, Ravana, the king of Rakshasas chanting the mantras and fixing the arrow struck the commander in chief (Neela) of the Vanara army.

YK-59-90Yuddha Kanda 59.90

सोऽस्त्रयुक्तेनबाणेननीलोवक्षसिताडितः । निर्धह्यमानस्सहसानिपपातमहीतले ।।6.59.90।।

so'strayuktenabāṇenanīlovakṣasitāḍitḥ | nirdhahyamānassahasānipapātamahītale ||6.59.90||

Translation

सःनीलः that Neela, अस्त्रयुक्तेन struck by the arrow, बाणेन arrow, वक्षसि on the chest, ताडितः burnt, निर्धह्यमानः propelled by the missile, सहसा, महीतले on ground, निपपात fell.

Meaning

Struck by the arrow propelled by the missile (of Ravana) on the chest, Neela fell on the ground.

YK-59-91Yuddha Kanda 59.91

पितृमहात्म्यसंयोगात्मनश्चापितेजसा । जानुभ्यानुपतद्भूमौनतुप्राणैर्व्ययुज्यत ।।6.59.91।।

pitṛmahātmyasṃyogātmanaścāpitejasā | jānubhyānupatadbhūmaunatuprāṇairvyayujyata ||6.59.91||

Translation

पितृमहात्म्यसंयोगात् by virtue of father's greatness, आत्मनः himself, तेजसाचापि own power, जानुभ्याम् knees, भूमौ to the ground, न्यपतत् fell, तु but, प्राणैः life, नव्ययुज्यत not ceased.

Meaning

By virtue of his father's greatness and his own power, his life did not cease but he fell on the ground.

YK-59-92Yuddha Kanda 59.92

विसंज्ञंवानरंदृष्टवादशग्रीवोरणोत्सुकः । रथेनाम्बुदनादेनसौमित्रिमभिदुद्रुवे ।।6.59.92।।

visṃjñṃvānarṃdṛṣṭavādaśagrīvoraṇotsukḥ | rathenāmbudanādenasaumitrimabhidudruve ||6.59.92||

Translation

दशग्रीवः ten headed, वानरम् at the Vanaras, विसंज्ञम् unconscious, दृष्टवा watching, रणोत्सुकः eager to fight, अम्बुदनादेन resembling the rattling sound of cloud, रथेन chariot, सौमित्रिम् to Saumithri, अभिदुद्रुवे went towards.

Meaning

Finding the vanara unconscious the ten headed Ravana who was eager to fight went towards Saumithri in the chariot making sounds that resembled the sound of rattling of clouds.

YK-59-93Yuddha Kanda 59.93

आसाद्यरणमध्येतंवारयित्वास्थितोज्वलन् । धनुर्विष्फारयामासकम्पयन्निवमेदिनीम् ।।6.59.93।।

āsādyaraṇamadhyetṃvārayitvāsthitojvalan | dhanurviṣphārayāmāsakampayannivamedinīm ||6.59.93||

Translation

तम् him, मीदिनीम् as if the earth, रणमध्ये in the midst of war, आसाद्य reaching, वारयित्वा intercepting, स्थितः stood, ज्वलन् glowing, धनुः bow, कम्पयन्निव shaking.

Meaning

In the midst of the battlefield stood Ravana, intercepting with his glowing bow making loud sounds as though shaking the earth.

YK-59-94Yuddha Kanda 59.94

तमाहसौमित्रिरदीनसत्त्वोविष्फारयन्तंधनुरप्रमेयम् । अभ्येहिमामद्यनिशाचरेन्द्रनवानरांस्त्वप्रतियोद्धुमर्हः ।।6.59.94।।

tamāhasaumitriradīnasattvoviṣphārayantṃdhanuraprameyam | abhyehimāmadyaniśācarendranavānarāṃstvapratiyoddhumarhḥ ||6.59.94||

Translation

अदीनसत्त्वः not depressed in spirit, सौमित्रिः Saumithri, अप्रमेयम् immeasurable, धनुः bow, विष्फारयन्तम् stretching, तम् him, आह Oh, निशाचरेन्द्र Lord of night rangers, माम् me, अभ्येहि aware, त्वम् you, वानरान् Vanaras, प्रतियोद्धुम् fighting war, अर्हः you ought not.

Meaning

Saumithri who was not depressed in spirit (by Ravana's attack) addressing Ravana who was stretching his bow said "Oh! Lord of night rangers, Be aware. You ought not to fight with vanaras."

YK-59-95Yuddha Kanda 59.95

सतस्यवाक्यंप्रतिपूर्णघोषंज्याशब्दमुग्रंचनिशम्यराजा । आसाद्यसौमित्रिमवस्थितंतंकोपान्वितोवाचमुवाचरक्षः ।।6.59.95।।

satasyavākyṃpratipūrṇaghoṣṃjyāśabdamugrṃcaniśamyarājā | āsādyasaumitrimavasthitṃtṃkopānvitovācamuvācarakṣḥ ||6.59.95||

Translation

राजा king, सःरक्षः that Rakshasa, तस्य his, वाक्यम् words, प्रतिपूर्णघोषम् challenging statement, उग्रम् violent, ज्याशब्दम् vibrating sound, निशम्य hearing, उपस्थितम् standing near, तंसौमित्रिम् to Saumithri, आसाद्य reaching near, कोपान्वितम् wrathful, वाचम् words, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

Hearing the challenging statement of the king of Rakshasas and hearing the vibrating sound, Saumithri standing close by spoke these wrathful words.

YK-59-96Yuddha Kanda 59.96

दिष्ट्यासिमेराघव दृष्टिमार्गंप्राप्तोऽन्तगामीविपरीतबुद्धिः । अस्मिन् क्षणेयास्यसिमृत्युदेशंसम्पाद्यमानोममबाणजालैः ।।6.59.96।।

diṣṭyāsimerāghava dṛṣṭimārgṃprāpto'ntagāmīviparītabuddhiḥ | asmin kṣaṇeyāsyasimṛtyudeśṃsampādyamānomamabāṇajālaiḥ ||6.59.96||

Translation

राघव Raghava, विपरीतबुद्धिः perverted mind, अन्तगामी reaching the end, दिष्ट्या sight, मे my, दृष्टिमार्गम् my sight, प्राप्तः attained, मम me, बाणजालैः stream of arrows, संसाद्यमानः struck by my arrows, अस्मिन् you, क्षणे this very moment, मृत्युदेशम् abode of death, यास्यसि will go.

Meaning

"Oh Raghava! You have come under the path of my sight. You are going to meet your end. You who are perverted in mind, struck by a stream of my arrows will reach the abode of death this very moment."

YK-59-97Yuddha Kanda 59.97

तमाहसौमित्रिरविस्मयानोगर्जन्तमुद्वृत्तसिताग्रदंष्ट्रम् । राजन्नगर्जन्तिमहाप्रभावाविकत्थसेपापकृतांवरिष्ठ ।।6.59.97।।

tamāhasaumitriravismayānogarjantamudvṛttasitāgradṃṣṭram | rājannagarjantimahāprabhāvāvikatthasepāpakṛtāṃvariṣṭha ||6.59.97||

Translation

सौमित्रिः Saumithri, अविस्मयानः not surprised, उद्वृत्तसिताग्रदंष्ट्रम् projected teeth, गर्जन्तम् screaming, तम् you, आह great, पापकृताम् sinful action, वरिष्ठ displaying, राजन् king, विकत्थसे bluster, महाप्रभावाः of great valour, नगर्जन्ति not shout like that.

Meaning

Saumithri, not surprised at the screaming of Ravana with his projected teeth, said, "You are great in sinful action. People of great valour do not display such bluster. Do not shout like that."

YK-59-98Yuddha Kanda 59.98

जानामिवीर्यंतवराक्षसेन्द्रबलंप्रतापंचपराक्रमंच । अवस्थितोऽहंशरचापपाणिरागच्छकिंमोघविकत्थनेन ।।6.59.98।।

jānāmivīryṃtavarākṣasendrabalṃpratāpṃcaparākramṃca | avasthito'hṃśaracāpapāṇirāgacchakiṃmoghavikatthanena ||6.59.98||

Translation

राक्षसेन्द्र Rakshasa king तव your, वीर्यम् valour, बलम् strength, प्रतापंच and heroism, पराक्रमंच and prowess, जानामि not known to me, अहम् I am, शरचापपाणिः arrow and bow in hand, अवस्थितः stand firmly, आगच्छ come on, मोघविकत्थेन by bragging, किम What.

Meaning

"Your valour, heroism, strength and prowess are known to me. I stand firmly with bow and arrow come on. What is the use of bragging"

YK-59-99Yuddha Kanda 59.99

सएवमुक्तःकुपितस्ससर्जरक्षोथिपस्सप्तशरान् सुपुङ्खान् । तान्लक्ष्मणःकाञ्चनचित्रिपुङ्खैश्चिच्छेदबाणैर्निशिताग्रधारैः ।।6.59.99।।

saevamuktḥkupitassasarjarakṣothipassaptaśarān supuṅkhān | tānlakṣmaṇḥkāñcanacitripuṅkhaiścicchedabāṇairniśitāgradhāraiḥ ||6.59.99||

Translation

एवम् in that manner, उक्तः having said, सःरक्षोधिपः that Lord of Rakshasas, कुपितः angrily, सुपुङ्खान् beautiful plumes, सप्त seven, शरान् arrows, ससर्ज released, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, काञ्चनमित्रपुङ्खैः gold shafted, निशिताग्रधारैः sharp pointed and sharp headed, बाणैः arrows, तान् them, चिच्छेद tore to pieces.

Meaning

Lakshmana, having spoken in that manner, the Lord of Rakshasas released seven arrows with beautiful plumes. Lakshmana tore them into pieces with sharp pointed and sharpheaded arrows with gold shafts.

YK-59-100Yuddha Kanda 59.100

तान् प्रेक्षमाणस्सहसानिकृत्तानिकृत्तभोगानिवपन्नगेन्द्रान् । लङ्केश्वरःक्रोधवशंजगामससर्जचान्यान्निशितान्पृषत्कान् ।।6.59.100।।

tān prekṣamāṇassahasānikṛttānikṛttabhogānivapannagendrān | laṅkeśvarḥkrodhavaśṃjagāmasasarjacānyānniśitānpṛṣatkān ||6.59.100||

Translation

सहसा with force, निकृत्तान् broken down, निकृत्तभोगान् whose coils have been broken, पन्नगेन्द्रानिव like serpent Lords, तान् them, प्रेक्षमाणः seeing, लङ्केश्वरः Lord of Lanka, क्रोधवशम् overtaken by wrath, जगाम fallen down, अन्यान् other, निशितान् sharp, पृषत्कान् let go.

Meaning

Seeing the arrows cut down with force broken pieces like coils of serpents, the Lord of Lanka overtaken by anger let go another sharp arrow.

YK-59-101Yuddha Kanda 59.101

सबाणवर्षंतुववर्षतीव्रंरामानुजःकार्मुकसम्प्रयुक्तम् । क्षुरार्धचन्द्रोत्तमकर्णिभल्लैःशरांश्चचिच्छेदनचुक्षुभेच ।।6.59.101।।

sabāṇavarṣṃtuvavarṣatīvrṃrāmānujḥkārmukasamprayuktam | kṣurārdhacandrottamakarṇibhallaiḥśarāṃścacicchedanacukṣubheca ||6.59.101||

Translation

सःरामानुजः that Rama's brother, कार्मुसम्प्रयुक्तम् stretching the bow into a round shape, तीव्रम् piercing, बाणवर्षम् rain of arrows, ववर्ष showered, क्षुरार्थचन्द्रोत्तमकर्णिभल्लैः Kshura, Ardhachandra, karni and Balan, शरान् च arrows, चिच्छेद tore, चचुक्षुभेच not perturbed.

Meaning

The brother of Rama stretched his bow into a circle and showered rain of piercing arrows. He tore the arrows of his enemy with his arrows Kshura, Ardhachandra, karni and Balan without nay, perturbance.

YK-59-102Yuddha Kanda 59.102

सबाणजालान्यथतानितानिमोघानिपश्यंस्त्रिदशारिराजः । विसिस्मियेलक्ष्मणलाघवेनपुनश्चबाणान्निशितान्मुमोच ।।6.59.102।।

sabāṇajālānyathatānitānimoghānipaśyṃstridaśārirājḥ | visismiyelakṣmaṇalāghavenapunaścabāṇānniśitānmumoca ||6.59.102||

Translation

सः he, त्रिदशारिराजः Ravana the enemy of gods, मोघानि in effective, तानितानि all of them, बाणजालानि stream of arrows, पश्यन् seeing, लक्ष्मणलाघवेन Lakshman's skill, विसिस्मिये astonished, पुनःच again and, निशितान् sharp, बाणान् arrows, मुमोच let go.

Meaning

Ravana, the enemy of gods seeing all his streams of arrows ineffective, was astonished at Lakshmana's skill, and let go sharp arrows again and again.

YK-59-103Yuddha Kanda 59.103

सलक्ष्मणश्चापिशरान् शिताग्रान्महेन्द्रतुल्योऽशनितुल्यवेगान् । सन्धायचापेज्वलनप्रकाशान् ससर्जरक्षोधिपतेर्वधाय ।।6.59.103।।

salakṣmaṇaścāpiśarān śitāgrānmahendratulyo'śanitulyavegān | sandhāyacāpejvalanaprakāśān sasarjarakṣodhipatervadhāya ||6.59.103||

Translation

महेन्द्रतुल्यः comparable to Mahendra, सः he, लक्ष्मणश्चापि Lakshmana also, शिताग्रान् sharp pointed, अशनितुल्यवेगान् flying at high speed, ज्वलनप्रकाशान् shining like fire, शरान् arrows, चापे bow, सन्धाय fitting, रक्षोधिपतेः Lord of Rakshasas, वधाय to put an end, ससर्ज loosed.

Meaning

Lakshmana also, who is comparable to Mahendra, fitting his bow and arrows that shone like fire released sharp and pointed arrows to put an end to Rakshasa king.

YK-59-104Yuddha Kanda 59.104

सतान् प्रचिच्छेदहिराक्षसेन्द्रःछित्वाचतन्लक्ष्मणमाजघान । शरेणकालाग्निसमप्रभेणस्वयम्भुदत्तेनललाटदेशे ।।6.59.104।।

satān pracicchedahirākṣasendrḥchitvācatanlakṣmaṇamājaghāna | śareṇakālāgnisamaprabheṇasvayambhudattenalalāṭadeśe ||6.59.104||

Translation

सः he, राक्षसेन्द्रः Rakshasa king, छित्वा broken, तान् those, चतान् arrows, प्रचिच्छेदहि covered, कालाग्निसमप्रभेण bright as the fire at universal destruction, स्वयम्भुदत्तेन given by Brahma, शरेण by arrow, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana's, ललाटदेशे forehead, आजघान struck.

Meaning

The Rakshasa king broke into pieces those arrows of Lakshmana and struck him on the forehead with the arrow gifted to him by Brahma, that was bright like the fire at the time of universal destruction.

सलक्ष्मणोरावणसायकार्तश्चचालचापंशिधिलंप्रगृह्य । पुनश्चसंज्ञांप्रतिलभ्यकृच्छ्राच्चिच्छेदचापंत्रिदशेन्द्रशत्रो ।।6.59.105।।

salakṣmaṇorāvaṇasāyakārtaścacālacāpṃśidhilṃpragṛhya | punaścasṃjñāṃpratilabhyakṛcchrāccicchedacāpṃtridaśendraśatro ||6.59.105||

सःलक्ष्मणः that Lakshmana, रावणसायकार्तः hurt by Ravana's dart, चापम् bow, शिथिलम् feebly, प्रगृह्य seizing, चचाल shaken, पुनःच and again, कृच्छ्रात् with great difficulty, संज्ञाम् regaining consciousness, प्रतिलभ्य back in return, त्रिदशेन्द्रशत्रोः enemy of Indra, चापम् dart, चिच्छेद tore to pieces

Meaning

Lakshmana hurt by Ravana's dart, shaken up, seizing the bow feebly with great difficulty regaining consciousness tore the bow of the enemy of Indra into pieces in return.

YK-59-106Yuddha Kanda 59.106

निकृत्तचापंत्रिभिराजघानबाणैस्तदादाशरथिश्शिताग्रैः । ससायकार्तोविचचालराजाकृच्छ्राच्छसंज्ञांपुनराससाद ।।6.59.106।।

nikṛttacāpṃtribhirājaghānabāṇaistadādāśarathiśśitāgraiḥ | sasāyakārtovicacālarājākṛcchrācchasṃjñāṃpunarāsasāda ||6.59.106||

Translation

Meaning

Then Lakshmana son of Dasaratha, struck the bow of the king into pieces with three sharp and pointed arrows. The king swooned and recovered with great difficulty.

YK-59-107Yuddha Kanda 59.107

सकृत्तचापःशरताडितश्चमेदार्द्रगात्रोरुधिरावसिक्तः । जग्राहशक्तिंस्वयमुग्रशक्तिस्स्वयम्भुदत्तांयुधिदेवशत्रुः ।।6.59.107।।

Translation

कृत्तचापः bow being cut, शरताडितश्च hurt by the arrows, मेदार्द्रगात्रः limbs splattered with fat, रुधिरावसिक्तः bathed in blood, स्वयम् his own, उग्रशक्तिः formidable energy, सः he, देवशत्रुः enemy of god, युधि in the battlefield, स्वयम्भुदत्ताम् gifted by the self born, शक्तिम् javelin जग्राह seized.

Meaning

Hurt by the arrows, bow cut, bathed in blood, limbs splattered with fat, Ravana the enemy of gods, himself being endowed with formidable energy gifted by the Self born creator seized javelin on the battlefield.

YK-59-108Yuddha Kanda 59.108

सतांसधूमानलसन्निकाशांवित्रासनींसंयतिवानराणाम् । चिक्षेपशक्तिंतरसाज्वलन्तींसौमित्रयेराक्षसराष्ट्रनाथः ।।6.59.108।।

satāṃsadhūmānalasannikāśāṃvitrāsanīṃsṃyativānarāṇām | cikṣepaśaktiṃtarasājvalantīṃsaumitrayerākṣasarāṣṭranāthḥ ||6.59.108||

Translation

राक्षसराष्ट्रनाथः Lord of the world of Rakshasas, सः he, सधूमानलसन्निकाशाम् like fire without smoke, संयति similar, वानराणाम् Vanaras, वित्रासनीम् create fear, ज्वलन्तीम् emitting fire, तांशक्तिम् that javelin, तरसा instantly, सौमित्रये on Saumithri, चिक्षेप flung.

Meaning

The Lord of the world of Rakshasas instantly flung javelin, emitting fire without smoke, on Saumithri, which created fear among Vanaras.

YK-59-109Yuddha Kanda 59.109

तामापतन्तींभरतानुजोऽस्त्रैर्जघानबाणैश्चहुताग्निकल्पैः । तथापिसातस्यविवेशशक्तिर्भुजान्तरंदाशरथेर्विशालम् ।।6.59.109।।

tāmāpatantīṃbharatānujo'strairjaghānabāṇaiścahutāgnikalpaiḥ | tathāpisātasyaviveśaśaktirbhujāntarṃdāśaratherviśālam ||6.59.109||

Translation

भरतानुजः Bharata's brother, Lakshmana, अपतन्तीम् coming towards, ताम् that, अस्त्रै: weapon, हुताग्निकल्पैः with shafts like flames of fire fuelled by ghee, बाणैश्च dart, जघान coming, तथापि even so, साशक्तिः that javelin, दाशरथेः Lakshmana, विशालम् broad, भुजान्तरम् chest, विवेश entered.

Meaning

Lakshmana, the brother of Bharata struck the fierce weapon coming towards him like flames of fire fuelled by ghee, even then it struck him on his broad chest.

YK-59-110Yuddha Kanda 59.110

सशक्तिमान् शक्तिसमाहतःसन् प्रजज्वालमुहुःरघुप्रवीरः । तंविह्वलन्तंसहसाभ्युपेत्यजग्राहराजातरसाभुजाभ्याम् ।।6.59.110।।

saśaktimān śaktisamāhatḥsan prajajvālamuhuḥraghupravīrḥ | tṃvihvalantṃsahasābhyupetyajagrāharājātarasābhujābhyām ||6.59.110||

Translation

शक्तिसमाहतःसन् badly hurt by the javelin, शक्तिम् powerful, सः he, रघुप्रवीरः eminent hero of Raghu's, मुहुः many a times, प्रजज्वाल burnt, राजा king, सहसा violently, अभ्युपेत्य caught, विह्वलन्तम् losing consciousness, तम् him, तरसा speedily, भुजाभ्याम् shoulders, जग्राह held.

Meaning

Lakshmana the eminent hero of Raghu's was badly hurt by the javelin and was burning in pain. King Ravana caught him who was losing consciousness, violently and held him by his shoulders.

YK-59-111Yuddha Kanda 59.111

हिमवान् मन्दरोमेरुस्तैलोक्यंवासहामरैः । शक्यंभुजाभ्यामुद्धर्तुंनसङ् ख्येभरतानुजः ।।6.59.111।।

himavān mandaromerustailokyṃvāsahāmaraiḥ | śakyṃbhujābhyāmuddhartuṃnasaṅ khyebharatānujḥ ||6.59.111||

Translation

हिमवान् Himalayas, मन्दरः Mandara, मेरुः Meru, सहामरैः Devatas, त्रैलोक्यंवा even the three worlds, भुजाभ्याम् shoulders, उद्धर्तुम् to lift, शक्यम् possible, भरतानुजः Lakshmana, नसङ् ख्यः not possible.

Meaning

It may be possible to lift Himalayas, Mandara, Meru mountains or even the Devatas of the three worlds but not possible to lift Lakshmana by shoulders.

YK-59-112Yuddha Kanda 59.112

शक्त्याब्राह्म्याहिसौमित्रिस्ताडितास्तुस्तनान्तरे । विष्णोरचिन्यन्त्यंस्वंभागमात्मानंप्रत्यनुस्मरत् ।।6.59.112।।

śaktyābrāhmyāhisaumitristāḍitāstustanāntare | viṣṇoracinyantyṃsvṃbhāgamātmānṃpratyanusmarat ||6.59.112||

Translation

सौमित्रिः Saumithri, ब्राह्म्या shoulders, शक्त्या by the javelin, स्तनान्तरे in the chest, ताडितास्तु wounded, विष्णोः Vishnu, अचिन्त्यम् inconceivable, स्वम् him, आत्मानम् own self, अनुस्मरत् recalled.

Meaning

Even though Saumithri was wounded in the chest and the power of Brahma entered (into his chest) he recalled himself as an inconceivable form of Vishnu.

YK-59-113Yuddha Kanda 59.113

ततोदानवदर्पघ्नंसौमित्रिंदेवकण्टकः । तंपीडयित्वाबाहुभ्यांनप्रभुर्लङ्घनेऽभवत् ।।6.59.113।।

tatodānavadarpaghnṃsaumitriṃdevakaṇṭakḥ | tṃpīḍayitvābāhubhyāṃnaprabhurlaṅghane'bhavat ||6.59.113||

Translation

ततः thereafter, देवकण्टकः enemy of Devatas, तम् him, दानवदर्पघ्नम् pride of Rakshasas, सौमित्रिम् Saumithri, बाहुभ्याम् shoulders, पीडयित्वा capable of crushing, लङ्घने to lift, प्रभुः king, नाभवत् not do.

Meaning

Thereafter, Ravana the enemy of Devatas was not capable of lifting Lakshmana's shoulders. Lakshmana could crush the pride of Rakshasas.

YK-59-114Yuddha Kanda 59.114

अथवायुसुतःक्रुद्धोरावणंसमभिद्रवत् । आजघानोरसिक्रुद्धोवज्रकल्पेनमुष्टिना ।।6.59.114।।

athavāyusutḥkruddhorāvaṇṃsamabhidravat | ājaghānorasikruddhovajrakalpenamuṣṭinā ||6.59.114||

Translation

अथ and then, क्रुद्धः angry, वायुसुतः son of wind god, रावणम् Ravana, समभिद्रवत् came towards, क्रुद्धः angry, वज्रकल्पेन by thunderbolt, मुष्टिना fist, उरसि on the chest, आजघान struck.

Meaning

Then the son of the wind god, enraged, came towards Ravana. Full of anger, he struck him with his thunderbolt like fist on the chest of Ravana.

YK-59-115Yuddha Kanda 59.115

तेनमुष्टिप्रहारेणरावणोराक्षसेश्वरः । जानुभ्यामपतद्भूमौचचालचपपातच ।।6.59.115।।

tenamuṣṭiprahāreṇarāvaṇorākṣaseśvarḥ | jānubhyāmapatadbhūmaucacālacapapātaca ||6.59.115||

Translation

तेन by that, मुष्टिप्रहारेण blow of the fist, राक्षसेश्वरः Rakshasa Lord, रावणः Ravana, चचाल shaken, जानुभ्याम् on his knees, भूमौ on the ground, अपतत् च fell.

Meaning

By the blow of Hanuman's fist, Ravana the Lord of Rakshasas was shaken and fell on the ground on his knees.

YK-59-116Yuddha Kanda 59.116

अस्यैश्चनेत्रैश्श्रवणैःपपातरुधिरंबहु । विघूर्णमानोनिश्चेष्टोरथोपस्थउपाविशत् ।।6.59.116।।

asyaiścanetraiśśravaṇaiḥpapātarudhirṃbahu | vighūrṇamānoniśceṣṭorathopasthaupāviśat ||6.59.116||

Translation

आस्यैःच from the mouth, नेत्रैः eyes, श्रवणैः ears, बहु much, रुधिरम् blood, पपात flowed, विघूर्णमानः rolling, निश्चेष्टः still, रथोपस्थे hind part, उपाविशत् sank.

Meaning

Much blood flowed from his(Ravana's) mouth, ears, and eyes. Rolling in the hind part of the chariot he became still and sank.

YK-59-117Yuddha Kanda 59.117

विसंज्ञोमूर्च्छ्रितश्चासीन्नचस्थानंसमालभत् । विसंज्ञंरावणंदृष्टवासमरेभीमविक्रमम् ।।6.59.117।। ऋषयोवानराश्चैवनेदुर्देवास्सवासवाः ।

visṃjñomūrcchritaścāsīnnacasthānṃsamālabhat | visṃjñṃrāvaṇṃdṛṣṭavāsamarebhīmavikramam ||6.59.117|| ṛṣayovānarāścaivanedurdevāssavāsavāḥ |

Translation

विसंज्ञः lost senses, मूर्छितश्च unconscious, आसीन्न perturbed, स्थानम् location, नचसमालभत् not knowing, समरे in the combat, भीमविक्रमम् fierce valour, रावणम् Ravana, दृष्टवा seeing, ऋषयः sages, वानराश्चैव Vanaras also, सवासवाःसह demons also, देवाश्चैव even Devatas, नेदुः shouted in joy.

Meaning

Ravana of fierce valour having lost senses and waking up from unconscious state, perturbed, did not know where he was. Seeing this the sages, even Vanaras, the demons as well as Devatas shouted in joy.

YK-59-118Yuddha Kanda 59.118

हनूमानपितेजस्वीलक्ष्मणंरावणार्धितम् ।।6.59.118।। आनयद्राघवाभ्याशंबाहुभ्यांपरिगृह्यतम् ।

hanūmānapitejasvīlakṣmaṇṃrāvaṇārdhitam ||6.59.118|| ānayadrāghavābhyāśṃbāhubhyāṃparigṛhyatam |

Translation

अथ and, तेजस्वी brilliant, हनूमानपि Hanuman, रावणार्धितम् wounded by Ravana, तंलक्ष्मणम् that Lakshmana, बाहुभ्याम् both shoulders, परिगृह्य holding, राघूभ्याशम् near Rama, आनयत् brought.

Meaning

Brilliant Hanuman holding Lakshmana wounded by Ravana in both shoulders brought him to Rama.

YK-59-119Yuddha Kanda 59.119

वायुसूनोःसुहृत्त्वेनभक्त्यापरमयाचसः ।।6.59.119।। शत्रूणामप्रकम्प्योऽपिलघुत्वमगमत्कपेः ।

vāyusūnoḥsuhṛttvenabhaktyāparamayācasḥ ||6.59.119|| śatrūṇāmaprakampyo'pilaghutvamagamatkapeḥ |

Translation

सः he, शत्रूणाम् for the enemies, अप्रकम्पःअपि unshakeable by enemies, वायुसूनोः son of wind god, सुहृत्त्वेन friend, परमया highly, भक्त्याच being devoted, कपेः monkey, लघुत्वम् became light, आगमत् became.

Meaning

Lakshmana though unshakeable for enemies, became light for the son of wind god by his friendship and high devotion.

YK-59-120Yuddha Kanda 59.120

तंसमुत्सृज्यसाशक्तिःसौमित्रिंयुधिदुर्जयम् ।।6.59.120।। रावणस्यरथेतस्मिन् स्थानंपुनरुपागता ।

tṃsamutsṛjyasāśaktiḥsaumitriṃyudhidurjayam ||6.59.120|| rāvaṇasyarathetasmin sthānṃpunarupāgatā |

Translation

साशक्तिः that power, युधि in war, दुर्जयम् vanquish, सौमित्रिम् Saumithri, रावणस्य Ravana's, तस्मिन् रथे in his chariot, पुनः again, स्थानम् position, उपागता returning back.

Meaning

That power returned back to Ravana's chariot to its position, leaving Lakshmana, who was difficult to vanquish.

YK-59-121Yuddha Kanda 59.121

आश्वस्तश्चनिशल्यश्चलक्ष्मणश्शत्रुसूदनः ।।6.59.121।। विष्णोर्भागममीमांस्यमात्मानंप्रत्यनुस्मरन् ।

āśvastaścaniśalyaścalakṣmaṇaśśatrusūdanḥ ||6.59.121|| viṣṇorbhāgamamīmāṃsyamātmānṃpratyanusmaran |

Translation

शत्रुसूदनः could destroy foes, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, अमीमांस्यम् immeasurable, विष्णोःभागम् part of Vishnu, आत्मानम् himself, प्रत्यनुस्मरन् again remembering, आश्वस्तःच from consciousness, विशल्यःच relieved of wounds.

Meaning

Lakshmana who could destroy foes, recovering from unconsciousness, relieved of wounds again remembered himself to be part of Vishnu of immeasurable power.

YK-59-122Yuddha Kanda 59.122

रावणोऽपिमहातेजाःप्राप्यसंज्ञांमहाहवे ।।6.59.122।। आददेनिशितान् बाणान् जग्राहचमहद्धमः ।

rāvaṇo'pimahātejāḥprāpyasṃjñāṃmahāhave ||6.59.122|| ādadeniśitān bāṇān jagrāhacamahaddhamḥ |

Translation

महातेजाः of mighty prowess, रावणोऽपि Ravana too, महाहवे huge combat संज्ञाम् waking up, प्राप्य endured, निशितान् sharp, बाणान् arrows, आददे, महत् great, धनुःच bow also, आददे took over.

Meaning

Ravana of mighty prowess waking up from consciousness took over his sharp arrows and the great bow also.

YK-59-123Yuddha Kanda 59.123

निपातितमहावीरांद्रवन्तींवानरींचमूम् ।।6.59.123।। राघवस्तुरणेदृष्टवारावणंसमभिद्रवत् ।

nipātitamahāvīrāṃdravantīṃvānarīṃcamūm ||6.59.123|| rāghavasturaṇedṛṣṭavārāvaṇṃsamabhidravat |

Translation

राघवस्तु Raghava also, रणे in the combat, निपातितमहावीराम् fallen heroes, द्रवन्तीम् struck down, वानरीम् Vanaras, चमूम् leaders, दृष्टवा seeing, रावणम् Ravana, समभिद्रवत् assailed.

Meaning

Raghava also assailed Ravana seeing the fallen Vanara heroes struck in the combat.

अथैवमुपसङ्गम्यहनूमान्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।।6.59.124।। ममपृष्ठंसमारुह्यराक्षसंशास्तुमर्हसि । विष्णुर्यथागरुत्मन्तंबलवन्तंसमाहितः ।।6.59.125।।

athaivamupasaṅgamyahanūmānvākyamabravīt ||6.59.124|| mamapṛṣṭhṃsamāruhyarākṣasṃśāstumarhasi | viṣṇuryathāgarutmantṃbalavantṃsamāhitḥ ||6.59.125||

Translation

अथ and then, हनूमान् Hanuman, एनम् , उपसङ्गम्य submitted, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke, विष्णुः Vishnu, गरुत्मन्तम् Garuda, बलवंन्तं mighty, समाहितः mounted, यथा so also, मम my, पृष्ठम् back, समारुह्य mounting, राक्षसम् Rakshasa, शास्तुम् subdue, अर्हसि ought to.

Meaning

And then Hanuman submitted to Rama, "Just as Lord Vishnu mounted on mighty Garuda, you should also be mounted on my back and subdue Ravana."

YK-59-126Yuddha Kanda 59.126

तच्छ्रुत्वाराघवोवाक्यंवायुपुत्रेणभाषितम् । आरुरोहमहाशूरंबलवन्तंमहाकपिम् ।।6.59.126।। रथस्थंरावणंसङ् ख्येददर्शमनुजाधिपः ।

tacchrutvārāghavovākyṃvāyuputreṇabhāṣitam | ārurohamahāśūrṃbalavantṃmahākapim ||6.59.126|| rathasthṃrāvaṇṃsaṅ khyedadarśamanujādhipḥ |

Translation

राघवः Raghava, वायुपुत्रेण to the son of wind god, भाषितम् spoken, तत् those, वाक्यम् words, श्रुत्वा hearing, आरुरोहमहाशूरं climbed on the hero, महाकपिम् great monkey, बलवन्तम् strong, आरुरोह on climbing, मनुजाधिपः Lord of humans, सङ् ख्ये in war, रथस्थम् on the chariot, रावणम् Ravana, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

On hearing the sub mission of Hanuman, Sri Rama, the Lord of humans climbed on the great monkey and saw Ravana on the chariot.

तमालोक्यमहातेजाःप्रदुद्रावसराघवः ।।6.59.127।। वैरोचनिवक्रुद्धोविष्णुरभ्युद्यतायुधः ।

tamālokyamahātejāḥpradudrāvasarāghavḥ ||6.59.127|| vairocanivakruddhoviṣṇurabhyudyatāyudhḥ |

Translation

महातेजाः highly energetic, सः he, तम् him, आलोक्य beheld, क्रुद्धः furious, अभ्युद्यतायुधः rushed towards, विष्णुः Vishnu, वैरोचनिव like Virochana, राघवः Raghava, प्रदुद्राव wielding bow.

Meaning

Beholding Ravana, highly energetic Rama wielding his bow went furiously towards him just as Lord Vishnu went with his discuss against Virochana.

YK-59-128Yuddha Kanda 59.128

ज्याशब्दमकरोत्तीव्रंवज्रनिष्पेषनिस्वनम् ।।6.59.128।। गिरागम्भीरयारामोराक्षसेन्द्रमुवाचह ।

jyāśabdamakarottīvrṃvajraniṣpeṣanisvanam ||6.59.128|| girāgambhīrayārāmorākṣasendramuvācaha |

Translation

रामः Rama, वज्रनिष्पेषनिस्वनम् like the clap of thunder sound, तीव्रम् intense, ज्याशब्दम् echoing the sound, अकरोत् caused, गम्भीरया majestic, गिरा in deep voice, राक्षसेन्द्रम् Rakshasa king, उवाचह spoke.

Meaning

Rama created a sound like a clap of thunder ringing intensely, a majestic one and spoke in a deep voice to the king.

YK-59-129Yuddha Kanda 59.129

तिष्ठतिष्ठममत्वंहिकृत्वाविप्रियमीदृशम् ।।6.59.129।। क्वनुराक्षसशार्दूल गतोमोक्षमवाप्स्यसि ।

tiṣṭhatiṣṭhamamatvṃhikṛtvāvipriyamīdṛśam ||6.59.129|| kvanurākṣasaśārdūla gatomokṣamavāpsyasi |

Translation

राक्षसशार्दूल tiger among Rakshasas, तिष्ठतिष्ठ forbear, त्वम् you, मम to me, ईदृशम् such, विप्रियम् delivered, कृत्वा having done, क्वनु where, गत्वा going, मोक्षम् deliverance, अवाप्स्यसि after the offence.

Meaning

"Oh! Tiger among Rakshasas, forbear, forbear. Having done such an offence to me, where are you going for deliverance"

YK-59-130Yuddha Kanda 59.130

यदीन्द्रवैवस्वतभास्करान्वास्वयम्भुवैश्वानरशंकरान्वा । गमिष्यसित्वंदशवादिशोवातथापिमेनाद्यगतोविमोक्ष्यसे ।।6.59.130।।

yadīndravaivasvatabhāskarānvāsvayambhuvaiśvānaraśṃkarānvā | gamiṣyasitvṃdaśavādiśovātathāpimenādyagatovimokṣyase ||6.59.130||

Translation

इन्द्रवैवस्वतभास्करान्वा either to Indra, or Yama or sun god, स्वयम्भुवैश्वानरशंकरान्वा to selfborn Brahma or to fire god or Shankara, दशवा ten, दिशोवा directions, त्वम् you, गमिष्यसियदि even if you run, तथापि like that, अद्य front, मे of me, गतः gone, नविमोक्ष्यसे not escape.

Meaning

"If you go to Indra or Yama or Sun God or the selfborn Brahma or fire God or Shankara or the ten directions like that, and if you run in front of me you cannot escape."

यश्चैवशक्त्याभिहतस्त्वयाऽद्यइच्छन्विषादंसहसाभ्युपेत्य । सएषरक्षोगणराजमृत्युःसपुत्रपौत्रस्यतवाद्ययुद्धे ।।6.59.131।।

yaścaivaśaktyābhihatastvayā'dyaicchanviṣādṃsahasābhyupetya | saeṣarakṣogaṇarājamṛtyuḥsaputrapautrasyatavādyayuddhe ||6.59.131||

Translation

रक्षोगणराज king of Rakshasa troop, अद्य in front, यःएषः he who like that, त्वया by you, शक्त्या support, अभिहतः struck now, विषादम् sorrow, इच्छन् , सःएव he himself, सहसा now, अभ्युपेत्य come, अद्य in front, युद्धे to combat, सपुत्रपौत्रस्य sons and grandsons, तव your, मृत्युः death.

Meaning

"Oh! king of Rakshasa troop! He, who was struck without support now, even if he were to come now in front, you with your sons and grandsons will be struck to death by him."

एतेनचात्यद्भुतदर्शनानिशरैर्जवस्थानकृतालयानि । चतुर्धशान्यात्तवरायुधानिरक्षःसहस्राणिनिषूदितानि ।।6.59.132।।

etenacātyadbhutadarśanāniśarairjavasthānakṛtālayāni | caturdhaśānyāttavarāyudhānirakṣḥsahasrāṇiniṣūditāni ||6.59.132||

Translation

एतेन by me, अद्भुतदर्शनानि of fierce form, जनस्थानकृतालयानि taken abode at Janasthana, अत्तवरायुधानि used choicest weapons, चतुर्धशानि fourteen, रक्षःसहस्राणि thousands of Rakshasas, शरैः weapons, निषूदितानि were destroyed by me.

Meaning

"By me, who is your adversary, fourteen thousand Rakshasas of fierce forms, who had taken abode at Janasthana and used choicest weapons were exterminated."

राघवस्यवचश्श्रुत्वाराक्षसेन्द्रोमहाबलः । वायुपुत्रंमहावेगंवहन्तंराघवंरणे ।।6.59.133।। रोषेणमहताविष्टःपूर्ववैरमनुस्मरन् । आजघानशरैर्दीप्स्सैःकालानलशिखोपमैः ।।6.59.134।।

Meaning

On hearing Raghava's words, the mighty strong king of Rakshasas seized with violent anger, recalling earlier enmity, struck with blazing arrows like tongues of fire at the time of universal destruction while Hanuman bore Rama.

YK-59-135Yuddha Kanda 59.135

राक्षसेनाहवेतस्यताडितस्यापिसायकैः । स्वभावतेजोयुक्तस्यभूयस्तेजोऽभ्यवर्धत ।।6.59.135।।

rākṣasenāhavetasyatāḍitasyāpisāyakaiḥ | svabhāvatejoyuktasyabhūyastejo'bhyavardhata ||6.59.135||

Translation

राक्षसेन by the Rakshasa, आहवे discharged, सायकैः arrows, ताडितस्यापि when hurt him also, स्वभावतेजोयुक्तस्य by nature endowed with energy, तस्य his, तेजः energy, भूयः exceedingly, अभ्यवर्धत went on increasing.

Meaning

Even though Hanuman was hurt by the arrows discharged by the Rakshasa king, being endowed with energy by nature, his energy went on increasing.

YK-59-136Yuddha Kanda 59.136

ततोरामोमहातेजारावणेनकृतव्रणम् । दृष्टवाप्लवगशार्दूलंक्रोधस्यवशमेयिवान् ।।6.59.136।।

tatorāmomahātejārāvaṇenakṛtavraṇam | dṛṣṭavāplavagaśārdūlṃkrodhasyavaśameyivān ||6.59.136||

Translation

ततः then, महातेजाः of extraordinary energy, रामः Rama, रावणेन Ravana, कृतव्रणम् wounds caused, प्लवगशार्दूलम् tiger among monkeys, दृष्टवा seeing, क्रोधस्य in anger, वशम् seized, एयिवान् possibly.

Meaning

Seeing the wounds caused by Ravana to Hanuman, the tiger among monkeys, possibly Rama was seized with anger.

YK-59-137Yuddha Kanda 59.137

तस्याभिसङ्क्रम्यरथंसचक्रंसाश्वध्वजच्छत्रमहापताकम् । ससारथिंसाशनिशूलखडगंरामःप्रचिच्छेदशरैस्सुपुङ्खैः ।।6.59.137।।

tasyābhisaṅkramyarathṃsacakrṃsāśvadhvajacchatramahāpatākam | sasārathiṃsāśaniśūlakhaḍagṃrāmḥpracicchedaśaraissupuṅkhaiḥ ||6.59.137||

Translation

रामः Rama, अभिसङ्क्रम्य advancing forward, तस्य his, सचक्रम् the wheel of chariot, साश्वध्वजच्छत्रमहापताकम् horses, standard, canopy, ससारथिम् the charioteer, साशनिशूलखडगम् tridents and weapons, रथम् chariot, शरैः darts, पुङ्खैः swords, प्रचिच्छेद tore into pieces.

Meaning

Advancing towards him, (Ravana), Rama tore into pieces his chariot, wheels, horses, standard and canopy including the charioteer and the darts and swords.

YK-59-138Yuddha Kanda 59.138

अथेन्द्रशत्रुंतरसाजघानबाणेनवज्राशनिसन्निभेन । भुजान्तरेव्यूढसुजातरूपेवज्रेणमेरुंभगवानिवेन्द्रः ।।6.59.138।।

athendraśatruṃtarasājaghānabāṇenavajrāśanisannibhena | bhujāntarevyūḍhasujātarūpevajreṇameruṃbhagavānivendrḥ ||6.59.138||

Translation

अथ and, वज्राशनिसन्निभेन resembling thunderbolt in shining, बाणेन arrows, इन्द्रशत्रुम् weapon of Indra, तरसा sharp, व्यूढसुजातरूपे broad fine looking chest,भुजान्तरे in between the shoulders, भगवान् divine, इन्द्रः Indra, वज्रेण with thunderbolt, मेरुम् इव like the Meru mountain, जघान struck.

Meaning

Then with a shining thunderbolt like arrows Rama struck with the weapon of Indra into the fine chest in between the shoulders just as Indra would strike the Meru Mountain with his thunderbolt.

YK-59-139Yuddha Kanda 59.139

योवज्रपातशनिसन्निपातान्नचक्षुभेनापिचचालराजा । सरामबाणाभिहतोभृशार्तश्चचालचापंचमुमोचवीरः ।।6.59.139।।

yovajrapātaśanisannipātānnacakṣubhenāpicacālarājā | sarāmabāṇābhihatobhṛśārtaścacālacāpṃcamumocavīrḥ ||6.59.139||

Translation

यः he, राजा king, वज्रपाताशनिसन्निपातात् one who is not disturbed hit by thunderbolt or by lightning, नचुक्षुभे not disturbed, नापिचचाल arrow, सः he, वीरः hero, रामबाणाभिहतः struck by Rama's arrow, भृशार्तः reeled, चचाल agonized, चापंच bow also, मुमोच let go.

Meaning

He, that heroic king, who was not disturbed hurt by thunderbolt of lightning, was agonized when struck by Rama's arrow and let his bow fall.

YK-59-140Yuddha Kanda 59.140

तंविह्वलन्तंप्रसमीक्ष्यरामस्समाददेदीप्तमथार्थचन्द्रम् । तेनार्कवर्णंसहसाकिरीटंचिच्छेदरक्षोधिपतेर्महात्मा ।।6.59.140।।

tṃvihvalantṃprasamīkṣyarāmassamādadedīptamathārthacandram | tenārkavarṇṃsahasākirīṭṃcicchedarakṣodhipatermahātmā ||6.59.140||

Translation

रामः Rama, विह्वलन्तम् swooning, तम् him, प्रसमीक्ष्य seeing, अथ then, दीप्तम् flaming, अर्थचन्द्रम् crescent shaped, समाददे took up, तेन by that, महात्मा great soul, सहसा hastily, अर्कवर्णम् red like sun, किरीटम् crown, चिच्छेद broke into pieces.

Meaning

Seeing Ravana swooning, great soul Rama took up a crescent shaped arrow and hastily broke his crown into pieces which were shining bright red like the Sun.

YK-59-141Yuddha Kanda 59.141

तंनिर्विषाशीविषसन्निकाशंशान्तार्चिषंसूर्यमिवाप्रकाशम् । गतश्रियंकृत्तकिरीटकूटमुवाचरामोयुधिराक्षसेन्द्रम् ।।6.59.141।।

tṃnirviṣāśīviṣasannikāśṃśāntārciṣṃsūryamivāprakāśam | gataśriyṃkṛttakirīṭakūṭamuvācarāmoyudhirākṣasendram ||6.59.141||

Translation

रामः Rama, युधि in combat, निर्विषाशीविषसन्निकाशम् resembling a serpent rid of poison without his crown, शान्तार्चिषम् without splendour, सूर्यमिव like sun, अप्रकाशम् without brightness, गतश्रियम् glory lost, कृत्तकिरीटकूटम् crown being torn, तंराक्षसेन्द्रम् that king of Rakshasas, उवाच said.

Meaning

Rama said to the king of Rakshasas, who was like a serpent rid of poison without (head) crown, without splendour like the Sun without brightness, his glory lost with the crown broken in the combat.

YK-59-142Yuddha Kanda 59.142

कृतंत्वयाकर्ममहत्सुभीमंहतप्रवीरश्चकृतस्त्वयाऽहम् । तस्मात्परिश्रान्तइतिव्यवस्यन्नत्वांशरैर्मृत्युवशंनयामि ।।6.59.142।।

kṛtṃtvayākarmamahatsubhīmṃhatapravīraścakṛtastvayā'ham | tasmātpariśrāntaitivyavasyannatvāṃśarairmṛtyuvaśṃnayāmi ||6.59.142||

Translation

त्वया by you, सुभीमम् exceedingly difficult, महत् great, कर्म task, कृतम् done, त्वया by you, अहम् I, हतप्रवीरः mighty heroes killed, कृतःच done, तस्मात् therefore, परिशान्तःइति exhausted, व्यवस्य declare, त्वाम् you, मृत्युवशम् to death, ननयामि not sent.

Meaning

A great task of killing mighty heroes has been accomplished by you. Therefore, you are exhausted. I declare that I will not send you to death.

YK-59-143Yuddha Kanda 59.143

गच्छानुजानामिरणार्धितस्त्वंप्रविश्यरात्रिंचरराजलङ्काम् । आश्वस्यनिर्याहिरथीचधन्वीतदाबलंप्रेक्ष्यसिमेरथस्थः ।।6.59.143।।

gacchānujānāmiraṇārdhitastvṃpraviśyarātriṃcararājalaṅkām | āśvasyaniryāhirathīcadhanvītadābalṃprekṣyasimerathasthḥ ||6.59.143||

Translation

रात्रिंचरराज king of night rangers, जानामि I know, त्वम् you, रणार्धितः are agonized after war, गच्छ go, लङ्काम् to Lanka, प्रविश्य reenter, अश्वस्य resting, रथी chariot, धन्वीच and bow, निर्याहि depart, तदा then, रथस्थः mounted on chariot, मे my, बलम् strength, प्रेक्ष्यसि witness.

Meaning

"King of night rangers! I know you are agonized after the war. Go to Lanka and rest and reenter, mounted on your chariot with bow. You will witness my strength."

YK-59-144Yuddha Kanda 59.144

सएवमुक्तोहतदर्पहर्षोनिकृत्तचापश्चहताश्वसूतः । शरार्दितःकृत्तमहाकिरीटोविवेशलङ्कांसहसास्मराजा ।।6.59.144।।

saevamuktohatadarpaharṣonikṛttacāpaścahatāśvasūtḥ | śarārditḥkṛttamahākirīṭoviveśalaṅkāṃsahasāsmarājā ||6.59.144||

Translation

एवम् in that way, उक्तः having spoken, सः by him, हतदर्पहर्षः vanity and joy crushed, निकृत्तचापः bow broken into pieces, हताश्वसूतः horses and charioteer killed, शरार्धितः wounded by arrows, कृत्तमहाकिरीटः crown broken, सःराजा that king, सहसा hastily, लङ्काम् Lanka, विवेश entered.

Meaning

Rama having spoken in that way (consoling), the king with his vanity and pride crushed, bow broken into pieces, horses and charioteer killed, wounded by arrows, crown broken entered Lanka hastily.

YK-59-145Yuddha Kanda 59.145

प्रविष्टेरजनीचरेन्द्रेमहाबलेदाववदेवशत्रौ । हरीन् विशल्यान् सहलक्ष्मणेनचकाररामःपरमाहवाग्रे ।।6.59.145।।

praviṣṭerajanīcarendremahābaledāvavadevaśatrau | harīn viśalyān sahalakṣmaṇenacakārarāmḥparamāhavāgre ||6.59.145||

Translation

महाबले endowed with great prowess, दानवदेवशत्रौ enemy of Danavas and Devas, तस्मिन् his, रजनीचरेन्द्रे king night prowlers, प्रविष्टे entering, रामः Rama, परमाहवाग्रे in the forefront, लक्ष्मणेनसह with Lakshmana, हरीन् monkeys ', विशल्यान् removed, चकार went.

Meaning

After the king of prowlers, the enemy of Danavas and Devas entered Lanka, Rama and Lakshmana also drew out the arrows from monkeys in the forefront of the battlefield and went.

YK-59-146Yuddha Kanda 59.146

तस्मिन्प्रभन्नेत्रिदशेन्द्रशतौसुरासुराभूतगणादिशश्च । ससागरास्सर्षिमहोरगाश्चतथैवभूम्यम्बुचराश्चप्रहृष्टाः ।।6.59.146।।

tasminprabhannetridaśendraśatausurāsurābhūtagaṇādiśaśca | sasāgarāssarṣimahoragāścatathaivabhūmyambucarāścaprahṛṣṭāḥ ||6.59.146||

Translation

त्रिदशेन्द्रशत्रौ enemy of Indra, तस्मिन् his, प्रभन्ने having been routed, सुरासुराः suras and Asuras, भूतगणाः guardians, दिशश्च of four quarters, हसागराः including sea, सर्षिमहोरगाःच including the sages and serpents, तथैव so also, भूम्यम्बुचराः creatures of land and water, प्रहृष्टाः joyful.

Meaning

The enemy of Indra having been routed, the suras and asuras, the guardians of the four quarters, including the sea, the large serpents, and sages so also the creatures of land and water were joyful. ।।इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेएकोनषष्टितमस्सर्गः ।। This is the end of the fifty ninth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
