YK-39-1Yuddha Kanda 39.1

तांरात्रिमुषितास्तत्रसुवेलेहरिपुङ्गवाः । लङ्कायांददृशुर्वीरावनान्युपवनानिच ।।6.39.1।।

tāṃrātrimuṣitāstatrasuveleharipuṅgavāḥ | laṅkāyāṃdadṛśurvīrāvanānyupavanānica ||6.39.1||

Translation

वीराः heroic, हरिपुङ्गवाः leader of monkeys, तत्र there, सुवेले on the Suvela, ताम् on that, रात्रिम् night, उषिताः kept awake, लङ्कायाम् Lanka, वनानि forests, उपवनानिच and gardens, ददृशः saw.

Meaning

The heroic leader of the monkeys kept awake that night on the Suvela and saw forests and gardens there in Lanka.

YK-39-2Yuddha Kanda 39.2

समसौम्यानिरम्याणिविशालान्यायतानिच । दृष्टिरम्याणितेदृष्टवाबभूवुर्जातविस्मयाः ।।6.39.2।।

samasaumyāniramyāṇiviśālānyāyatānica | dṛṣṭiramyāṇitedṛṣṭavābabhūvurjātavismayāḥ ||6.39.2||

Translation

ते they, समसौम्यानि even terrain with, रम्याणि beautiful, विशालानि expansive, आयतानिच long and continuous sanctuary, दृष्टिरम्याणि feast to the eyes, दृष्टवा on seeing, जातविस्मयाः lovely to look at, बभूवुः amazed.

Meaning

They were amazed to see the even terrain, beautiful and expansive, long, and continuous sanctuary lovely to look at being a feast to the eyes.

YK-39-3-6Yuddha Kanda 39.3–6 (कलापकम्)

चम्पकाशोकपुन्नागसालतालसमाकुला । तमालवनसञ्छन्नानागमालासमावृता ।।6.39.3।। हिन्तालैरर्जुनैर्नीपैस्सप्तपर्णैश्चपुष्पितैः । तिलकैःकर्णिकारैश्चपाटलैश्चसमन्ततः ।।6.39.4।। शुशुभेपुष्पिताग्रैश्चलतापरिगतैर्द्रुमैः । लङ्काबहुविधैर्दिव्यैर्यथेन्द्रस्यामरावती ।।6.39.5।। विचित्रकुसुमोपेतैरक्तकोमलपल्लवैः । शाद्वलैश्चतथानीपैश्चित्राभिर्वनराजिभिः ।।6.39.6।।

Translation

चम्पकाशोकपुन्नागसालतालसमाकुला Champaka, Asoka, Punnaga, Sala, Tala, Samala trees, तमालवनसञ्छन्ना Tamala forest concealed, नागमालासमावृता surrounded with Nagamala trees, लङ्काम् in Lanka, समन्ततः all over, हिन्तालैः Hintala, अर्जुनैः Arjuna, नीपैः Neepa, सुपुष्पितैः in full bloom, सप्तपर्णैः Saptaparni, तिलकैः Tilaka, कर्णिकारैश्च karnakara, पाटलैः Patala, पुष्पिताग्रैः crests laden with flowers, लतापरिगतद्रुमैः intertwined with creepers, विचित्रकुसुमोपेतैः wonderful variety of flowers, रक्तकोमलपल्लवैः clothed with red tender leaves, दिव्यैः wonderful, बहुविधैः of diverse kind, तथा similarly, नीलैः Neela, शाद्वलैः sadala, चित्राभिः colourful, वनराजिभिः king of forest, इन्द्रस्य Indra's capital, अमरावतीइव like Amaravathi, शुशुभे shining.

Meaning

Thickly covered with trees like Champaka, Asoka, Punnaga, Sala, Tala, Samala and Tamala trees concealing the woods, surrounded with Nagamala trees all over and Hintala, Arjuna and Neepa in full bloom, Saptaparni, Tilaka, Karnakara and Patala trees with crests laden with flowers, intertwined with creepers and wonderful variety of flowers trees with tender red leaves as if clothe d in red, flowers of diverse kind and similarly colourful Neela and Sadala as king of forest, it was shining like Amaravathi, capital of Indra.

YK-39-7Yuddha Kanda 39.7

गन्धाढ्यान्यभिरम्याणिपुष्पाणिचफलानिच । धारयन्त्यगमास्तत्रभूषणानीवमानवाः ।।6.39.7।।

gandhāḍhyānyabhiramyāṇipuṣpāṇicaphalānica | dhārayantyagamāstatrabhūṣaṇānīvamānavāḥ ||6.39.7||

Translation

तत्र there, अगमाः having reached, गन्धाढ्यानि bore fragrance, अभिरम्याणि very beautiful, पुष्पाणिच flowers, फलानिच and fruits, मानवाः humans, भूषणानीव ornaments, धारयतनि as though wearing.

Meaning

Having reached there where trees bore fragrance, very beautiful flowers and fruits seemed as though humans were wearing ornaments.

YK-39-8Yuddha Kanda 39.8

तच्चैत्ररथसङ्काशंमनोज्ञंनन्दनोपमम् । वनंसर्वरर्तुकंरम्यंशुशुभेषटपदायुतम् ।।6.39.8।।

taccaitrarathasaṅkāśṃmanojñṃnandanopamam | vanṃsarvarartukṃramyṃśuśubheṣaṭapadāyutam ||6.39.8||

Translation

चैत्ररथसङ्काशम् with chaitra chariot, मनोज्ञम् delightful to the mind, नन्दनोपमम् like Nandana garden of Indra, सर्वर्तुकम् green in all seasons, षटपदायुतम् filled with bees, तत् that, वनम् garden, शुशुभे very wonderful.

Meaning

Appearing like the chaitra chariot of Kubera, Nandana garden of Indra, green in all seasons filled with bees, the garden was a wonderful delight.

YK-39-9Yuddha Kanda 39.9

नत्यूहकोयष्टिमकैर्नृत्यमानैश्चबर्हिभि । रुतंपरभृतानांचशुश्रुवुर्वन्निर्झरे ।।6.39.9।।

natyūhakoyaṣṭimakairnṛtyamānaiścabarhibhi | rutṃparabhṛtānāṃcaśuśruvurvannirjhare ||6.39.9||

Translation

वन्निर्झरे abounding in cascades, नात्यूहकोयष्टिभकैः gallinules, lapwings, herons, नृत्यमानैः dancing, बर्हिणैः peacocks, परभृतानाम् cuckoos, रुतम् च and singing, शुश्रुवे heard.

Meaning

The Vanaras heard the singing of cuckoos, dancing of peacocks, crying of gallinules, lapwings and herons from the gardens abounding in cascades.

YK-39-10-12Yuddha Kanda 39.10–12 (त्रिकम्)

नित्यमत्तविहङ्गानिभ्रमराचरितानिच । कोकिलाकुलषण्डानिविहगाभिरुतानिच ।।6.39.10।। भृङ्गराजाभिगीतानिभ्रमरैस्सेवितानिच । कोणालकविघुष्टानिसारसाभिरुतानिच ।।6.39.11।। विविशुस्तेततस्तानिवनान्युपवनानिच । हृष्टाःप्रमुदितावीराहरयःकामरूपिणः ।।6.39.12।।

nityamattavihaṅgānibhramarācaritānica | kokilākulaṣaṇḍānivihagābhirutānica ||6.39.10|| bhṛṅgarājābhigītānibhramaraissevitānica | koṇālakavighuṣṭānisārasābhirutānica ||6.39.11|| viviśustetatastānivanānyupavanānica | hṛṣṭāḥpramuditāvīrāharayḥkāmarūpiṇḥ ||6.39.12||

Translation

ततः thereafter, ते they, हृष्टाः joyful, प्रमुदिताः happily, वीराः heroes, कामरूपिणः who can change form at will, हरयः monkeys, नित्यमत्तविहङ्गानि inhabited by birds ever heated with emotion, भ्रमराचरितानिच wandering bees, कोकिराकुलखण्डानि clusters of trees covered with cuckoos, विहङ्गाभिरुतानिच rendered noisy by birds singing, भृङ्गराजाधिगीतानि resounded with the singing of large black bees, भ्रमरैस्सेवितानिच bees clinging, कोणालकविघुष्टानि mingled sound of various birds, सारसाभिरुतानि noise of cries of cranes, तानि all that, वनानि woods, उपवनानिच and gardens, विविशुः entered.

Meaning

There after the rejoiced heroic Vanaras who can change their form at will happily entered the woods and gardens inhabited by birds in heat full of emotion, trees covered with cuckoos, and wandering bees, rendered noisy by birds, resounded with the singing of large black bees and bees going around clinging to trees, mingled with sounds of various birds and noise of cries of cranes.

YK-39-13Yuddha Kanda 39.13

तेषांप्रविशतांतत्रवानराणांमहौजसाम् । पुष्पसंसर्गसुरभिर्ववौघ्राणसुखोऽनिलः ।।6.39.13।।

teṣāṃpraviśatāṃtatravānarāṇāṃmahaujasām | puṣpasṃsargasurabhirvavaughrāṇasukho'nilḥ ||6.39.13||

Translation

महौजसाम् of extraordinary energy, तेषाम् all of them, वानराणाम् the Vanaras, तत्र then, प्रविशताम् as they were entering, पुष्पसंसर्गसुरभिः breeze redolent with the fragrance of flowers, घ्राणसुखः enjoying the fragrance, अनिलः wind, ववौ blew

Meaning

Then the Vanaras of extraordinary energy, were enjoying the breeze redolent with the fragrance of flowers as they were entering, and the wind blew.

YK-39-14Yuddha Kanda 39.14

अन्येतुहरिवीराणांयूथान्निष्क्रम्ययूथपाः । सुग्रीवेणाभ्यनुज्ञातालङ्कांजग्मुःपताकिनीम् ।।6.39.14।।

anyetuharivīrāṇāṃyūthānniṣkramyayūthapāḥ | sugrīveṇābhyanujñātālaṅkāṃjagmuḥpatākinīm ||6.39.14||

Translation

अन्ये others, यूथपाःतु heroes too, हरिवीराणाम् monkey heroes, यूथात् troops, निष्क्रम्य left, सुग्रीवेण to Sugriva, अभ्यनुज्ञाताः permitted by, पताकिनीम् decorated with flags, लङ्काम् Lanka, जग्मुः went.

Meaning

Some other monkey heroes permitted by Sugriva went to Lanka decorated with flags.

YK-39-15Yuddha Kanda 39.15

वित्रासयन्तोविहगांस्त्रासयन्तोमृगद्विपान् । कम्पयन्तश्चतांलङ्कांनादैस्तेनदतांवराः ।।6.39.15।।

vitrāsayantovihagāṃstrāsayantomṛgadvipān | kampayantaścatāṃlaṅkāṃnādaistenadatāṃvarāḥ ||6.39.15||

Translation

नदताम् capable of roaring, वराः best, विहगां birds, वित्रासयन्तः spreading, मृगद्विपान् dispiriting the deer and elephants, नादैः by the sound, ते they, लङ्काम् into Lanka, कम्पयन्तश्च terrifying.

Meaning

Other monkeys capable of roaring went into Lanka, spreading out terrifying the birds, dispiriting the deer and elephants by noise.

YK-39-16Yuddha Kanda 39.16

कुर्वन्तस्तेमहावेगामहींचरणपीडिताम् । रजश्चसहसैवोर्थ्वंजगामचरणोत्थितम् ।।6.39.16।।

kurvantastemahāvegāmahīṃcaraṇapīḍitām | rajaścasahasaivorthvṃjagāmacaraṇotthitam ||6.39.16||

Translation

महावेगाः capable of speed, ते they, महीम् great force, चरणपीडिताम् trampling down with feet, कुर्वन्तः doing, चरणोत्थितम् under feet, रजश्च dust, सहसैव in a second, ऊर्थ्वम् up to the sky, जगाम wentrose.

Meaning

Those Vanaras endowed with speed went trampling down on the ground with force, the dust under their feet rose to the sky in a fraction of a second.

YK-39-17Yuddha Kanda 39.17

ऋक्षास्सिंहावराहाश्चमहिषावारणामृगाः । तेनशब्देनवित्रस्ताजग्मुर्भीतादिशोदश ।।6.39.17।।

ṛkṣāssiṃhāvarāhāścamahiṣāvāraṇāmṛgāḥ | tenaśabdenavitrastājagmurbhītādiśodaśa ||6.39.17||

Translation

तेन by that, शब्देन sound, ऋक्षाः Bears, सिंहावराहश्च lions and pigs, महिषाः buffaloes, वारणामृगाः elephants, वित्रस्ताः alarmed, भीताः frightened, दश ten, दिशः directions, जग्मुः went.

Meaning

Alarmed by that sound the Bears, lions, pigs, elephants, buffaloes were frightened and went in all the ten directions.

YK-39-18-19Yuddha Kanda 39.18–19 (युग्मम्)

शिखरंतत्त्रिकूटस्यप्रांशुचैकंदिविस्पृशम् । समन्तात्पुष्पसंञ्छन्नंमहारजतसन्निभम् ।।6.39.18।। शतयोजनविस्तीर्णंविमलंचारुदर्शनम् । श्लक्ष्णंश्रीमन्महच्छैवदुष्प्रापंशकुनैरपि ।।6.39.19।। मनसाऽपिदुरारोहंकिंपुनःकर्मणाजनैः ।

śikharṃtattrikūṭasyaprāṃśucaikṃdivispṛśam | samantātpuṣpasṃñchannṃmahārajatasannibham ||6.39.18|| śatayojanavistīrṇṃvimalṃcārudarśanam | ślakṣṇṃśrīmanmahacchaivaduṣprāpṃśakunairapi ||6.39.19|| manasā'pidurārohṃkiṃpunḥkarmaṇājanaiḥ |

Translation

समन्तात् all over, पुष्पसञ्छन्नम् covered with flowers, महारजतसन्निभम् sparkled with gold, शतयोजनविस्तीर्णम् spread over a hundred yojanas, विमलम् whitepure, चारुदर्शनम् beautiful to look, श्लक्ष्णम् smooth, श्रीमत् splendid, महच्छैव sages, शकुनैरपि even for birds, दुष्प्रापम् not possible to reach, जनैः people, मनसापि in thought, दुरारोहम् difficult to access, कर्मणा by physical action, किंपुनः why again, प्रांशु praise worthy, दिविस्पृशम् touching the sky, एकम् alone, त्रिकूटस्यशिखरम् peak of Trikuta.

Meaning

Trikuta peak was fully covered with flowers, sparkled with gold, spread over a hundred yojanas, beautiful to look at, splendid and smooth. It is difficult even for birds to reach, for sages even in thought and difficult to access by any physical action. It is praiseworthy as if touching the sky alone.

YK-39-20Yuddha Kanda 39.20

निविष्टातत्रशिखरेलङ्कारावणपालिता ।।6.39.20।। शतयोजनविस्तीर्णात्रिंशद्योजनमायता ।

niviṣṭātatraśikharelaṅkārāvaṇapālitā ||6.39.20|| śatayojanavistīrṇātriṃśadyojanamāyatā |

Translation

तत्र there, शिखरे on top of the peak, रावणपालिता ruled by Ravana, शतयोजनविस्तीर्णा a hundred yojanas in breadth, त्रिंशद्योजनम् thirty yojanas, आयता long, लङ्का Lanka, निविष्टा experienced.

Meaning

Lanka ruled by Ravana was a hundred yojanas in breadth and thirty yojanas in length was seen.

YK-39-21Yuddha Kanda 39.21

सापुरीगोपुरैरुच्चैःपाण्डुराम्बुदसन्निभैः । काञ्चनेनचशालेनराजतेनचशोभते ।।6.39.21।।

sāpurīgopurairuccaiḥpāṇḍurāmbudasannibhaiḥ | kāñcanenacaśālenarājatenacaśobhate ||6.39.21||

Translation

सा that, पुरी city, उच्चैः tall, पाण्डुराम्बुदसन्निभैः like white cluster of clouds, गोपुरैः towers, काञ्चनेन with gold, राजतेनच and silver, शालेन fortified, शोभते charming.

Meaning

The city of Lanka looked charming with tall towers resembling white cluster of clouds fortified with gold and silver.

YK-39-22Yuddha Kanda 39.22

प्रासादैश्चविमानैश्चलङ्कापरमभूषिता । घनैरिवाऽतपापायेमध्यमंवैष्णवंपदम् ।।6.39.22।।

prāsādaiścavimānaiścalaṅkāparamabhūṣitā | ghanairivā'tapāpāyemadhyamṃvaiṣṇavṃpadam ||6.39.22||

Translation

प्रासादैश्च even the buildings, विमानैश्च resembled air planes, परमभूषिता decorated beautifully, लङ्का Lanka, आतपापापये exposed to the sun, घनैः rainy clouds, मध्यमम् in the centre, वैष्णवंपदम् इव resembling the abode of Vishnu.

Meaning

The tall buildings decorated beautifully resembled air planes and were shining like heavy rainy clouds exposed to the sun. The building in the centre resembled the abode of Vishnu.

YK-39-23-24Yuddha Kanda 39.23–24 (युग्मम्)

यस्यांस्तम्भसहस्रेणप्रासादस्समलङ्कृतः । कैलासशिखराकारोदृश्यतेखमिवोललिखन् ।।6.39.23।। चैत्यस्सराक्षसेन्द्रस्यबभूवपुरभूषणम् । शतेनरक्षसांनित्यंयस्समग्रेणरक्ष्यते ।।6.39.24।।

yasyāṃstambhasahasreṇaprāsādassamalaṅkṛtḥ | kailāsaśikharākārodṛśyatekhamivolalikhan ||6.39.23|| caityassarākṣasendrasyababhūvapurabhūṣaṇam | śatenarakṣasāṃnityṃyassamagreṇarakṣyate ||6.39.24||

Translation

यस्याम् in that city, यः that which is, नित्यम् always, रक्षसाम् protected, समग्रेण fully, शतेन hundred, रक्ष्यते graced, स्तम्बसहस्रेण thousand pillars, समलङ्कङ्कृतः ornament, कैलासशिखराकारः peak of mount Kailasa, प्रासादः palace, खम् sky, उललिखन्निव as if scraping, दृश्यते appeared, सः that, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य Rakshasa Lord's, पुरभूषणम् ornament of city, बभूव looked.

Meaning

In that city, which was always protected fully by a hundred Rakshasas, there was a palace with thousand pillars, which looked like peak of mount Kailas, and was as though it was scraping the sky and it as like an ornament of Lanka, the city of Rakshasa's Lord.

YK-39-25-27Yuddha Kanda 39.25–27 (त्रिकम्)

मनोज्ञांकाननवतींपर्वतैरुपशोभिताम् । नानाधातुविचित्रैश्चउद्यानैरुपशोभिताम् ।।6.39.25।। नानाविहङ्गासङ्घुष्टांनानामृगनिषेविताम् । नानाकुसुमसञ्छन्नांनानाराक्षससेविताम् ।।6.39.26।। तांसमृद्धांसमृद्धार्धांलक्ष्मीनान्लक्ष्मणाग्रजः । रावणस्यपुरींरामोददर्शसहवानरैः ।।6.39.27।।

manojñāṃkānanavatīṃparvatairupaśobhitām | nānādhātuvicitraiścaudyānairupaśobhitām ||6.39.25|| nānāvihaṅgāsaṅghuṣṭāṃnānāmṛganiṣevitām | nānākusumasañchannāṃnānārākṣasasevitām ||6.39.26|| tāṃsamṛddhāṃsamṛddhārdhāṃlakṣmīnānlakṣmaṇāgrajḥ | rāvaṇasyapurīṃrāmodadarśasahavānaraiḥ ||6.39.27||

Translation

लक्ष्मीवान् prosperous, लक्ष्मणाग्रजः Lakshmana's brother, रामः Rama, मनोज्ञाम् delightfully, काननवतीम् different kinds of forests, नानाधातुविचित्रैः different kinds of minerals, पर्वतैः mountains, उपशोभिताम् very charming, उद्यानैः gardens, उपशोभिताम् very delightful, नानाविहङ्गसङ्घुष्टाम् variety of birds singing happily, नानामृगनिषेविताम् frequented by different kinds of deer, नानाकुसुमसञ्छन्नाम् endowed with different varieties of flowers, नानाराक्षससेविताम् attended by many Rakshasas, समृद्धाम् blooming, समृद्धार्थाम् prosperous, ताम् that city, पुरीम् city, वानरैःसह along with Vanaras, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Prosperous Rama, brother of Lakshmana along with Vanaras saw different kinds of forests, mountains filled with different kinds of minerals, delightful gardens endowed with different varieties of flowers, charming birds singing happily, frequented by a variety of deer, attended by Rakshasas. The city was blooming with prosperity.

YK-39-28Yuddha Kanda 39.28

तांमहागृहसम्बाधांदृष्टवालक्ष्मणपूर्वजः । नगरीममरप्रख्योविस्मयंप्राप्यवीर्यवान् ।।6.39.28।।

tāṃmahāgṛhasambādhāṃdṛṣṭavālakṣmaṇapūrvajḥ | nagarīmamaraprakhyovismayṃprāpyavīryavān ||6.39.28||

Translation

वीर्यवान् valiant, लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः brother of Lakshmana, महागृहसम्बाधाम् filled with great palaces, अमरप्रख्यः distinct like Lord do Devatas, ताम् that, नगरीम् city, दृष्टवा on seeing, विस्मयम् wondered, प्राप्य became

Meaning

Valiant brother of Lakshmana wondered seeing the city filled with great palaces, distinct like Lord Indra's city.

YK-39-29Yuddha Kanda 39.29

तांरत्नपूर्णांबहुसंविधानांप्रासादमालाभिरलङ्कृतांच । पुरींमहायन्त्रकवाटमुख्यांददर्शरामोमहताबलेन ।।6.39.29।।

tāṃratnapūrṇāṃbahusṃvidhānāṃprāsādamālābhiralaṅkṛtāṃca | purīṃmahāyantrakavāṭamukhyāṃdadarśarāmomahatābalena ||6.39.29||

Translation

महता huge, बलेन army, रामः Rama, रत्नपूर्णम् jewelsgems, बहुसंविधानाम् accompanied by Vanaras, प्रासादमालाभिः garland s of buildings, अलङ्कृतांच adorned with, महायन्त्रकवाटमुख्याम् gates fitted with huge machines for war, महता large, बलेन by army, ताम् that, पुरीम् city, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Accompanied by huge Vanara army, Rama saw in the city of Lanka rows of buildingspalaces, adorned with gems, gates fitted with huge machines for war and large army of Ravana. ।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेएकोनचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः ।। This is the end of the thirty ninth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
