KK-34-1Kishkindha Kanda 34.1

तमप्रतिहतं क्रुद्धं प्रविष्टं पुरुषर्षभम्। सुग्रीवो लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा बभूव व्यथितेन्द्रियः।।4.34.1।।

tamapratihatṃ kruddhṃ praviṣṭṃ puruṣarṣabham| sugrīvo lakṣmaṇṃ dṛṣṭvā babhūva vyathitendriyḥ||4.34.1||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, अप्रतिहतम् who could not be obstructed, प्रविष्टम् entered, क्रुद्धम् angry one, पुरुषर्षभम् a bull among men, तं him, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, दृष्ट्वा seeing, व्यथितेन्द्रियः senses depressed, बभूव became.

Meaning

On seeing the angry Lakshmana, a bull among men, who could not be obstructed, enter in, Sugriva was disturbed.

KK-34-2-3Kishkindha Kanda 34.2–3 (युग्मम्)

क्रुद्धं निश्श्वसमानं तं प्रदीप्तमिव तेजसा। भ्रातुर्व्यसनसन्तप्तं दृष्ट्वा दशरथात्मजम्।।4.34.2।। उत्पपात हरिश्रेष्ठो हित्वा सौवर्णमासनम्। महान्महेन्द्रस्य यथा स्वलङ्कृत इव ध्वजः।।4.34.3।।

kruddhṃ niśśvasamānṃ tṃ pradīptamiva tejasā| bhrāturvyasanasantaptṃ dṛṣṭvā daśarathātmajam||4.34.2|| utpapāta hariśreṣṭho hitvā sauvarṇamāsanam| mahānmahendrasya yathā svalaṅkṛta iva dhvajḥ||4.34.3||

Translation

क्रुद्धम् enraged, निश्श्वसमानम् sighing heavily, तेजसा lustrous, प्रदीप्तमिव as if glowing, भ्रातुः brother's, व्यसनसन्तप्तम् burning with sorrow, तम् him, दशरथात्मजम् son of Dasaratha, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, हरिश्रेष्ठ: best of vanaras, सौवर्णम् golden, आसनम् seat, हित्वा quitting, महेन्द्रस्य Mahendra's, ध्वजः banner, स्वलङ्कृतः decorated, महान् great, इव like, उत्पपात jumped up.

Meaning

Seeing enraged Lakshmana, son of Dasaratha, sighing heavily, glowing like bright fire burning with the sorrow of Rama, Sugriva jumped out of his seat quitting the decorated golden throne just as Indra's decorated banner is raised up suddenly.

KK-34-4Kishkindha Kanda 34.4

उत्पतन्तमनूत्पेतू रुमाप्रभृतयः स्त्रियः। सुग्रीवं गगने पूर्णचन्द्रं तारागणा इव।।4.34.4।।

utpatantamanūtpetū rumāprabhṛtayḥ striyḥ| sugrīvṃ gagane pūrṇacandrṃ tārāgaṇā iva||4.34.4||

Translation

रुमाप्रभृतयः Ruma and others, स्त्रियः women, उत्पतन्तम् jumped up, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, गगने in the sky, पूर्णम् full, चन्द्रम् Moon, तारागणा cluster of stars, इव like, अनूत्पेतु: jumped up.

Meaning

As soon as Sugriva jumped up ,Ruma and other womenfolk rose to their feet like the clusters of stars around the fullMoon in the sky.

KK-34-5Kishkindha Kanda 34.5

संरक्तनयनः श्रीमान्विचचाल कृताञ्जलिः। बभूवावस्थितस्तत्र कल्पवृक्षो महानिव।।4.34.5।।

sṃraktanayanḥ śrīmānvicacāla kṛtāñjaliḥ| babhūvāvasthitastatra kalpavṛkṣo mahāniva||4.34.5||

Translation

संरक्तनयनः redeyed, श्रीमान् prosperous, कृताञ्जलिः offered salutations with folded palms, विचचाल was shaken, महान् great, कल्पवृक्षः इव like the Kalpa tree, तत्र there, अवस्थितः stood, बभूव became.

Meaning

With eyes red as blood through drunkenness,prosperous Sugriva was shaken like the Kalpa tree.He stood there and offered salutations(to Lakshmana) with folded hands.

KK-34-6Kishkindha Kanda 34.6

रुमाद्वितीयं सुग्रीवं नारीमध्यगतं स्थितम्। अब्रवील्लक्ष्मणः क्रुद्धस्सतारं शशिनं यथा।।4.34.6।।

rumādvitīyṃ sugrīvṃ nārīmadhyagatṃ sthitam| abravīllakṣmaṇḥ kruddhassatārṃ śaśinṃ yathā||4.34.6||

Translation

सतारम् surrounded by stars, शशिनं यथा like the Moon, रुमाद्वितीयम् along with Ruma, नारीमध्यगतम् surrounded by women, स्थितम् who stood, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, क्रुद्धः infuriated, लक्ष्मणः to Lakshmana, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Looking at Sugriva surrounded by Ruma and other women like the Moon among stars, infuriated Lakshmana said

KK-34-7Kishkindha Kanda 34.7

सत्त्वाभिजनसम्पन्नस्सानुक्रोशो जितेन्द्रियः। कृतज्ञस्सत्यवादी च राजा लोके महीयते।।4.34.7।।

sattvābhijanasampannassānukrośo jitendriyḥ| kṛtajñassatyavādī ca rājā loke mahīyate||4.34.7||

Translation

सत्त्वाभिजनसम्पन्नः heir of a noble clan, सानुक्रोशः compassionate, जितेन्द्रियः one who has controlled his senses, कृतज्ञः grateful person, सत्यवादी च one who is truthful, राजा king, लोके in the world, महीयते will excel.

Meaning

'Only a king who is an heir to a noble family, compassionate, and selfcontrolled, grateful and truthful excels in the world.

KK-34-8Kishkindha Kanda 34.8

यस्तु राजा स्थितोऽधर्मे मित्राणामुपकारिणाम्। मिथ्या प्रतिज्ञां कुरुते को नृशंसतरस्ततः।।4.34.8।।

yastu rājā sthito'dharme mitrāṇāmupakāriṇām| mithyā pratijñāṃ kurute ko nṛśṃsatarastatḥ||4.34.8||

Translation

यः whoever, राजा a king, अधर्मे in unrighteous path, स्थितः adopts, उपकारिणाम् to his benefactors, मिथ्या false, प्रतिज्ञाम् promise, कुरुते makes, ततः then, नृशंसतरः more malicious, कः what

Meaning

'Which king can be more malicious than the one who makes false promises and adopts an unrighteous path towards those who helped him?

KK-34-9Kishkindha Kanda 34.9

शतमश्वानृते हन्ति सहस्रं तु गवानृते। आत्मानं स्वजनं हन्ति पुरुषः पुरुषानृते।।4.34.9।।

śatamaśvānṛte hanti sahasrṃ tu gavānṛte| ātmānṃ svajanṃ hanti puruṣḥ puruṣānṛte||4.34.9||

Translation

पुरुषः man, अश्वानृते tells a lie about a horse, शतम् hundred, हन्ति kills, गवानृते tells a lie about a cow, सहस्रम् thousand, पुरुषानृते a lie about a man, आत्मानम् himself, स्वजनम् his own people, हन्ति kills.

Meaning

'If a man tells a lie about a horse, he commits the sin of killing a hundred horses. If one tells a lie about a cow, he shares the sin of killing a thousand cows. If one tells a lie about a man, it is equal to the sin of killing oneself and his own people.

KK-34-10Kishkindha Kanda 34.10

पूर्वं कृतार्थो मित्राणां न तत्प्रतिकरोति यः। कृतघ्नस्सर्वभूतानां स वध्यः प्लवगेश्वर।।4.34.10।।

pūrvṃ kṛtārtho mitrāṇāṃ na tatpratikaroti yḥ| kṛtaghnassarvabhūtānāṃ sa vadhyḥ plavageśvara||4.34.10||

Translation

प्लगेश्वर O lord of monkeys, पूर्वम् first, कृतार्थः is fulfilled, यः whoever, मित्राणाम् to the friends, तत् that, प्रतिकरोति does not help in turn, कृतघ्नः an ungrateful one, सः he, सर्वभूतानाम् to all beings, वध्यः deserves to be killed.

Meaning

'O lord of monkeys he who, having accomplished his task first with the help of his friend, does not return the help is ungrateful. Such a person deserves to be killed.It applies to all beings.

KK-34-11Kishkindha Kanda 34.11

गीतोऽयं ब्रह्मणा श्लोक स्सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः। दृष्ट्वा कृतघ्नं क्रुद्धेन तन्निबोध प्लवङ्गम।।4.34.11।।

gīto'yṃ brahmaṇā śloka ssarvalokanamaskṛtḥ| dṛṣṭvā kṛtaghnṃ kruddhena tannibodha plavaṅgama||4.34.11||

Translation

प्लवङ्गम O lord of the monkeys, कृतघ्नम् an ungrateful one, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, क्रुद्धेन by an outraged, ब्रह्मणा by a brahmin, सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः revered by all the worlds, अयम् this, श्लोकः verse, गीतः is sung, तत् that, निबोध listen.

Meaning

'O lord of the monkeys here is a verse worthy of appreciation by all the worlds, sung by a brahmin, when he saw an ungrateful person. Listen:

KK-34-12Kishkindha Kanda 34.12

ब्रह्मघ्ने च सुरापे च चोरे भग्नव्रते तथा। निष्कृतिर्विहिता सद्भि: कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः।।4.34.12।।

brahmaghne ca surāpe ca core bhagnavrate tathā| niṣkṛtirvihitā sadbhi: kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ||4.34.12||

Translation

ब्रह्मघ्ने one who kills a brahmin, सुरापे च and a drunkard, चोरे by thieves, तथा similarly, भग्नव्रते one who violates sacred vows, सद्भि: pious men, निष्कृतिः expiation, विहिता is provided, कृतघ्ने for an ungrateful one, निष्कृतिः such an atonement, नास्ति not there.

Meaning

'There is expiation for one who kills a brahmin, a drunkard, a thief and a violator of sacred vows. But there is no atonement for an ungrateful man.'

KK-34-13Kishkindha Kanda 34.13

अनार्यस्त्वं कृतघ्नश्च मिथ्यावादी च वानर। पूर्वं कृतार्थो रामस्य न तत्प्रतिकरोषि यत्।।4.34.13।।

anāryastvṃ kṛtaghnaśca mithyāvādī ca vānara| pūrvṃ kṛtārtho rāmasya na tatpratikaroṣi yat||4.34.13||

Translation

वानर O monkey, पूर्वम् in the past, कृतार्थः one whose object is achieved, त्वम् you, यत् since, रामस्य Rama's, न प्रतिकरोषि not helped in return, तत् that, अनार्यः ignoble one, कृतघ्नश्च ungrateful, मिथ्यावादी च one who is a liar, ननु you are surely.

Meaning

'O monkey you have already achieved your objective (with the help of Rama) but have not helped Rama in return. You are surely an ignoble and ungrateful liar.

KK-34-14Kishkindha Kanda 34.14

ननु नाम कृतार्थेन त्वया रामस्य वानर। सीताया मार्गणे यत्नः कर्तव्यः कृतमिच्छता।।4.34.14।।

nanu nāma kṛtārthena tvayā rāmasya vānara| sītāyā mārgaṇe yatnḥ kartavyḥ kṛtamicchatā||4.34.14||

Translation

वानर monkey, कृतार्थेन by a grateful one, रामस्य Rama's, कृतम् task, इच्छता intending, त्वया by you, सीतायाः Sita's, मार्ग in search, यत्नः attempt, ननु नाम कर्तव्यः it should be taken up indeed.

Meaning

'O monkey, if you are grateful to Rama you should wish to search for Sita. Indeed, you should make efforts to take it up.

KK-34-15Kishkindha Kanda 34.15

स त्वं ग्राम्येषु भोगेषु सक्तो मिथ्याप्रतिश्रवः। न त्वां रामो विजानीते सर्पं मण्डूकराविणम्।।4.34.15।।

sa tvṃ grāmyeṣu bhogeṣu sakto mithyāpratiśravḥ| na tvāṃ rāmo vijānīte sarpṃ maṇḍūkarāviṇam||4.34.15||

Translation

मिथ्याप्रतिश्रवः who has made false promises, सः he, त्वम् you, ग्राम्येषु भोगेषु worldy pleasures, सक्तः engaged in, रामः Rama, त्वाम् you, मण्डूकराविणम् croaking like a frog, सर्पम् serpent, न विजानीते did not identify.

Meaning

'You have failed to keep your word. You are engaged in worldly pleasures. Rama did not know that you are a serpent croaking like a frog.

KK-34-16Kishkindha Kanda 34.16

महाभागेन रामेण पापः करुणवेदिना। हरीणां प्रापितो राज्यं त्वं दुरात्मा महात्मना।।4.34.16।।

mahābhāgena rāmeṇa pāpḥ karuṇavedinā| harīṇāṃ prāpito rājyṃ tvṃ durātmā mahātmanā||4.34.16||

Translation

महाभागेन by the illustrious, महात्मना by the great self, करुणवेदिना by the compassionate, रामेण by Rama, पापः sinner, दुरात्मा evilminded, त्वम् you, हरीणाम् monkeys', राज्यम् kingdom, प्रापितः granted.

Meaning

'Rama is illustrious, compassionate and great. He has granted the kingdom to you, to one who is a sinner and an evilminded person.

KK-34-17Kishkindha Kanda 34.17

कृतं चेन्नाभिजानीषे रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः। सद्यस्त्वं निशितैर्भावार्हतो द्रक्ष्यसि वालिनम्।।4.34.17।।

kṛtṃ cennābhijānīṣe rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇḥ| sadyastvṃ niśitairbhāvārhato drakṣyasi vālinam||4.34.17||

Translation

त्वम् you, अक्लिष्टकर्मणः of a man who accomplishes a task with ease, रामस्य of Rama, कृतम् help, नाभिजानीषे यदि if you did not recognise, सद्यः presently, निशितैः by sharp ones, बाणैः with arrows, हतः kill, वालिनम् to Vali, द्रक्ष्यसे you may see.

Meaning

'If you do not recognise the help of Rama who can accomplish any deed with ease, you will be killed with my sharp arrows and meet Vali (in heaven).

KK-34-18Kishkindha Kanda 34.18

न च सङ्कुचितः पन्था येन वाली हतो गतः। समये तिष्ठ सुग्रीव मा वालिपथमन्वगाः।।4.34.18।।

na ca saṅkucitḥ panthā yena vālī hato gatḥ| samaye tiṣṭha sugrīva mā vālipathamanvagāḥ||4.34.18||

Translation

सुग्रीव O Sugriva, समये by agreement, तिष्ठ stand by, हतः killed, वाली Vali, येन by whichever path, गतः gone, पन्थाः path, न च सङ्कुचितः is not a narrow one, वालिपथम् the path of Vali, मा अन्वगाः do not follow him.

Meaning

'O Sugriva the path by which Vali went is not closed.I wish you do not follow him. You stand by the promise made.

KK-34-19Kishkindha Kanda 34.19

न नूनमिक्ष्वाकुवरस्य कार्मुक च्युतान् शरान्पश्यसि वज्र सन्निभान्। तत स्सुखं नाम निषेवसे सुखी। न रामकार्यं मनसाऽप्यवेक्षसे।।4.34.19।।

na nūnamikṣvākuvarasya kārmuka cyutān śarānpaśyasi vajra sannibhān| tata ssukhṃ nāma niṣevase sukhī| na rāmakāryṃ manasā'pyavekṣase||4.34.19||

Translation

नूनम् surely, इक्ष्वाकुवरस्य of the renowned among the Ikshvaku race, कार्मुक bow, वज्रसन्निभान् comparable to a thunderbolt, च्युतान् released, शरान् arrows, न पश्यसि you do not see, ततः then, सुखी without fear, सुखम् a happy, निषेवसे नाम you are resorting to, मनसापि even in your mind, रामकार्यम् Rama's work, न अवेक्षसे not thinking.

Meaning

'You have not seen the thunderboltlike arrows released from the bow of Rama, the renowned prince of the Ikshvaku race. Therefore you are resorting to enjoyment without any fear and have not given thought to Rama's work.' इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे चतुस्त्रिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the thirtyfourth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
