KK-33-1Kishkindha Kanda 33.1

अथ प्रतिसमादिष्टो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा। प्रविवेश गुहां घोरां किष्किन्धां रामशासनात्।।4.33.1।।

atha pratisamādiṣṭo lakṣmaṇḥ paravīrahā| praviveśa guhāṃ ghorāṃ kiṣkindhāṃ rāmaśāsanāt||4.33.1||

Translation

अथ and then, प्रतिसमादिष्टः having been called in, परवीरहा slayer of enemies, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, रामशासनात् as per Rama's command, घोराम् frightful in appearance, गुहाम् cave, किष्किन्धाम् Kishkinda, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

Instructed by Rama, and having been permitted, Lakshmana, the slayer of enemies entered the frightful cave of Kishkinda.

KK-33-2Kishkindha Kanda 33.2

द्वारस्था हरयस्तत्र महाकाया महाबलाः। बभूवुर्लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे प्राञ्जलय स्थिताः।।4.33.2।।

dvārasthā harayastatra mahākāyā mahābalāḥ| babhūvurlakṣmaṇṃ dṛṣṭvā sarve prāñjalaya sthitāḥ||4.33.2||

Translation

तत्र there, द्वारस्थाः gatekeepers, महाकायाः of huge body, महाबलाः mighty, हरयः monkeys, सर्वे all, लक्ष्मणम् at Lakshmana, दृष्ट्वा seeing, प्राञ्जलयः greeted with folded palms, स्थिताः stood, बभूवुः became.

Meaning

Seeing Lakshmana, the huge and mighty monkey gatekeepers stood at the entrance and greeted him with folded hands.

KK-33-3Kishkindha Kanda 33.3

निश्वसन्तं तु तं दृष्ट्वा क्रुद्धं दशरथात्मजम्। बभूवुर्हरयस्त्रस्ता न चैनं पर्यवारयन्।।4.33.3।।

niśvasantṃ tu tṃ dṛṣṭvā kruddhṃ daśarathātmajam| babhūvurharayastrastā na cainṃ paryavārayan||4.33.3||

Translation

हरयः monkeys, निश्श्वसन्तम् sighing deeply, क्रुद्धम् angry, दशरथात्मजम् son of Dasaratha, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, त्रस्ताः feared, बभूवुः became, एनम् him, पर्यवारयन् not surround him.

Meaning

The monkeys kept away out of fear to see the son of Dasaratha, who was angry and sighing deeply.

KK-33-4Kishkindha Kanda 33.4

स तां रत्नमयीं श्रीमान्दिव्यां पुष्पितकाननाम्। रम्यां रत्नसमाकीर्णां ददर्श महतीं गुहाम्।।4.33.4।।

sa tāṃ ratnamayīṃ śrīmāndivyāṃ puṣpitakānanām| ramyāṃ ratnasamākīrṇāṃ dadarśa mahatīṃ guhām||4.33.4||

Translation

श्रीमान् a bestower of fortune, सः he, रत्नमयीम् inlaid with gems, दिव्याम् wonderful, पुष्पितकाननाम् with forest full of flowers, रम्याम् delighting, रत्नसमाकीर्णाम् full of precious stones and gems, ताम् such, महतीम् mammoth, गुहाम् cave, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Lakshmana, the bestower of fortune, saw the mammoth cave inlaid with gems and precious stones and forests full of delightful flowers.

KK-33-5Kishkindha Kanda 33.5

हर्म्यप्रासादसम्बाधां नानापण्योपशोभिताम्। सर्वकामफलैर्वृक्षैः पुष्पितैरुपशोभिताम्।।4.33.5।।

harmyaprāsādasambādhāṃ nānāpaṇyopaśobhitām| sarvakāmaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ puṣpitairupaśobhitām||4.33.5||

Translation

हर्म्यप्रासादसम्बाधाम् thronged with elevated mansions and palaces, नानापण्योपशोभिताम् illumined with jewels, सर्वकामफलैः which satisfied every one's wish, पुष्पितैः flowers in bloom, वृक्षैः by trees, उपशोभिताम् splendid.

Meaning

The palace was thronged with elevated mansions and illumined with jewels of all kinds. The trees were in bloom and the fruits satisfied every one's wish.It was splendid.

KK-33-6Kishkindha Kanda 33.6

देवगन्धर्वपुत्रैश्च वानरैः कामरूपिभिः। दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरै श्शोभितां प्रियदर्शनैः।।4.33.6।।

devagandharvaputraiśca vānaraiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ| divyamālyāmbaradharai śśobhitāṃ priyadarśanaiḥ||4.33.6||

Translation

देवगन्धर्वपुत्रैः sons born of gods and gandharvas, कामरूपिभिः by those who could change their form as they wished, दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरैः wearing beautiful garlands, प्रियदर्शनैः pleasing in appearance, वानरैः by monkeys, उपशोभिताम् very delightful.

Meaning

The inhabitants of Kishkinda being sons of gods and gandharvas, were of beautiful appearance wearing wonderful garlands. They could change their form at their free will. They were delightful.

KK-33-7Kishkindha Kanda 33.7

चन्दनागरुपद्मानां गन्धैस्सुरभिगन्धिनाम्। मैरेयाणां मधूनां च सम्मोदितमहापथाम्।।4.33.7।।

candanāgarupadmānāṃ gandhaissurabhigandhinām| maireyāṇāṃ madhūnāṃ ca sammoditamahāpathām||4.33.7||

Translation

सुरभिगन्धिनाम् of fragrant unguents, चन्दनागरुपद्मानाम् of sandal, agaru and lotus incenses, मधूनाम् of various kinds of honey, गन्धैः of fine smell, सम्मोदितमहापथाम् royal roads filled with happy people.

Meaning

The royal roads were filled with fragrant unguents, like sandal, agaru and lotus incenses, finesmelling honey of several kinds and happy inhabitants.

KK-33-8Kishkindha Kanda 33.8

विन्ध्यमेरुगिरिप्रख्यै: प्रासादैर्नैकभूमिभिः। ददर्श गिरिनद्यश्च विमलास्तत्र राघवः।।4.33.8।।

vindhyamerugiriprakhyai: prāsādairnaikabhūmibhiḥ| dadarśa girinadyaśca vimalāstatra rāghavḥ||4.33.8||

Translation

राघवः Lakshmana, तत्र there, नैकभूमिभि: tall buildings, विन्ध्यमेरूगिरिप्रख्यै: like the Vindhya and Meru mountains, प्रासादै: buildings, विमलाः pure, गिरिनद्यश्च mountain streams, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Lakshmana saw tall buildings comparable to Vindhya and Meru mountains and pure water flowing from the mountain streams.

KK-33-9-12Kishkindha Kanda 33.9–12 (कलापकम्)

अङ्गदस्य गृहं रम्यं मैन्दस्य द्विविधस्य च। गवयस्य गवाक्षस्य गजस्य शरभस्य च।।4.33.9।। विद्युन्मालेश्च सम्पाते स्सूर्याक्षस्य हनूमतः। वीरबाहो स्सुबाहोश्च नलस्य च महात्मनः।।4.33.10।। कुमुदस्य सुषेणस्य तारजाम्बवतोस्तथा। दधिवक्त्रस्य नीलस्य सुपाटलसुनेत्रयोः।।4.33.11।। एतेषां कपिमुख्यानां राजमार्गे महात्मनाम्। ददर्श गृहमुख्यानि महासाराणि लक्ष्मणः।।4.33.12।।

aṅgadasya gṛhṃ ramyṃ maindasya dvividhasya ca| gavayasya gavākṣasya gajasya śarabhasya ca||4.33.9|| vidyunmāleśca sampāte ssūryākṣasya hanūmatḥ| vīrabāho ssubāhośca nalasya ca mahātmanḥ||4.33.10|| kumudasya suṣeṇasya tārajāmbavatostathā| dadhivaktrasya nīlasya supāṭalasunetrayoḥ||4.33.11|| eteṣāṃ kapimukhyānāṃ rājamārge mahātmanām| dadarśa gṛhamukhyāni mahāsārāṇi lakṣmaṇḥ||4.33.12||

Translation

लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, अङ्गदस्य Angada's, रम्यम् beautiful, गृहम् home, मैन्दस्य Mainda's, च and, गवयस्य Gavaya's, गवाक्षस्य Gavaksha's, गजस्य Gaja's, शरभस्य च and Sarabha's, विद्युन्मालेश्च Vidyunmala's, सम्पातेः Sampati's, सूर्याक्षस्य Suryaksha's, हनूमतः Hanuman's, वीरबाहोः Veerabahu's, सुबाहोश्च Subhahu's, महात्मनः of the great, नलस्य च Nala's, कुमुदस्य Kumuda's, सुषेणस्य Sushena's, तथा similarly, तारजाम्बवतोः Tara's and Jambavan's, दधिवक्त्रस्य् of Dadhivaktra's, नीलस्य Nila's, सुपाटलसुनेत्रयोः of Supaatala and Sunetra, एतेषाम् of all of them, महात्मनाम् great ones, कपिमुख्यानाम् monkey chiefs, महासाराणि prosperous, द्विविदस्य Dwivida's, गृहमुख्यानि important homes, राजमार्गे on the royal road, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

On the royal road, Lakshmna saw beautiful homes of monkeychiefs Angada, Mainda, Dwivida, Gavaya, Gavaksha, Gaja, Sarabha, Vidyunmalin, Sampati, Suryaksha, Hanuman, Veerabahu, Subahu, the great Nala, Kumuda and Sushena. Similarly he saw the homes of Tara and Jambavan, Dadhivaktra, Nila, Supatala and Sunetra. (Tara mentioned here is a male monkey.)

KK-33-13Kishkindha Kanda 33.13

पाण्डुराभ्रप्रकाशानि दिव्यमाल्ययुतानि च। प्रभूतधनधान्यानि स्त्रीरत्नै श्शोभितानि च।।4.33.13।।

pāṇḍurābhraprakāśāni divyamālyayutāni ca| prabhūtadhanadhānyāni strīratnai śśobhitāni ca||4.33.13||

Translation

पाण्डुराभ्रप्रकाशानि shining like white clouds, दिव्यमाल्ययुतानि च with wonderful garlands hanging, प्रभूतधनधान्यानि filled with abundant wealth and grain, स्त्रीरत्नैः with best of women, शोभितानि च shining bright.

Meaning

These homes were shining like white clouds, with wonderful garlands hung on, filled with abundance of wealth, grains and best of females.

KK-33-14-18Kishkindha Kanda 33.14–18 (कुलकम्)

पाण्डुरेण तु सालेन परिक्षिप्तं दुरासदम्। वानरेन्द्रगृहं रम्यं महेन्द्रसदनोपमम्।।4.33.14।। शुक्लैः प्रासादशिखरैः कैलासशिखरोपमैः। सर्वकामफलैर्वृक्षैः पुष्पितैरुपशोभितम्।।4.33.15।। महेन्द्रदत्तैश्श्रीमद्भिर्नीलजीमूतसन्निभैः। दिव्यपुष्पफलैर्वृक्षैशीतच्छायैर्मनोरमैः।।4.33.16।। हरिभिस्संवृतद्वारं बलिभिश्शस्त्रपाणिभिः। दिव्यमाल्यावृतं शुभ्रं तप्तकाञ्चनतोरणम्।।4.33.17।। सुग्रीवस्य गृहं रम्यं प्रविवेश महाबलः। अवार्यमाणस्सौमित्रिर्महाभ्रमिव भास्करः।।4.33.18।।

pāṇḍureṇa tu sālena parikṣiptṃ durāsadam| vānarendragṛhṃ ramyṃ mahendrasadanopamam||4.33.14|| śuklaiḥ prāsādaśikharaiḥ kailāsaśikharopamaiḥ| sarvakāmaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ puṣpitairupaśobhitam||4.33.15|| mahendradattaiśśrīmadbhirnīlajīmūtasannibhaiḥ| divyapuṣpaphalairvṛkṣaiśītacchāyairmanoramaiḥ||4.33.16|| haribhissṃvṛtadvārṃ balibhiśśastrapāṇibhiḥ| divyamālyāvṛtṃ śubhrṃ taptakāñcanatoraṇam||4.33.17|| sugrīvasya gṛhṃ ramyṃ praviveśa mahābalḥ| avāryamāṇassaumitrirmahābhramiva bhāskarḥ||4.33.18||

Translation

Meaning

The abode of Sugriva was encircled by a white rampart and unapproachable.It was enchanting like the abode of Indra. The mansion tops were like the white peaks of Kailas mountain filled with blossoming trees which could yield all kinds of fruits to suit one's taste. The trees were huge like dark clouds, cool and shady with wonderful flowers in full bloom, the riches gifted by Indra, were delightful. The entrance was guarded by mighty monkeys holding weapons in hand. It had a golden archway at the entrance decorated with wonderful garlands and strings of golden flowers. Saumitri of great prowess entered the rich abode of Sugriva just as the Sun enters huge clouds unobstructed.

KK-33-19-20Kishkindha Kanda 33.19–20 (युग्मम्)

स सप्त कक्ष्या धर्मात्मा नानाजनसमाकुलाः। प्रविश्य सुमहद्गगुप्तं ददर्शान्तःपुरं महत्।।4.33.19।। हैमराजतपर्यङ्कैर्बहुभिश्च वरासनैः। महार्हास्तरणोपेतैस्तत्र तत्रोपशोभितम्।।4.33.20।।

sa sapta kakṣyā dharmātmā nānājanasamākulāḥ| praviśya sumahadgaguptṃ dadarśāntḥpurṃ mahat||4.33.19|| haimarājataparyaṅkairbahubhiśca varāsanaiḥ| mahārhāstaraṇopetaistatra tatropaśobhitam||4.33.20||

Translation

धर्मात्मा righteous man, सः Lakshmana, नानाजनसमाकुला: with all kinds of people assembled, सप्त seven, कक्ष्याः enclosures, प्रविश्य having entered through, सुमहत् huge, गुप्तम् protected, महत् great, हैमराजतपर्यङ्कै: with cots made of bright gold and silver, महार्हास्तरणोपेतैः with best of cushions, बहुभि: with costly, वरासनैश्च best of seats, तत्र तत्र here and there, समावृतम् covered, अन्तःपुरम् harem, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Righteous Lakshmana crossed the seven enclosures filled with different kinds of people and saw a great harem full of several bright gold and silver cots, excellent seats here and there with best of cushions spread.

KK-33-21Kishkindha Kanda 33.21

प्रविशन्नेव सततं शुश्राव मधुरस्वरम्। तन्त्रीगीतसमाकीर्णं समगीतपदाक्षरम्।।4.33.21।।

praviśanneva satatṃ śuśrāva madhurasvaram| tantrīgītasamākīrṇṃ samagītapadākṣaram||4.33.21||

Translation

प्रविशन्नेव as he entered, तन्त्रीगीतसमाकीर्णम् sounds of melodiously tuned string instruments, समगीतपदाक्षरम् with songs worded to metre in different kinds of tune, सततम् always, मधुरस्वरम् sweet voices, शुश्राव heard.

Meaning

As he entered, he heard melodious sounds of string instruments and music worded to metre with different kinds of tunes.

KK-33-22Kishkindha Kanda 33.22

बह्वीश्च विविधाकारा रूपयौवनगर्विताः। स्त्रियस्सुग्रीवभवने ददर्श सुमहाबलः।।4.33.22।।

bahvīśca vividhākārā rūpayauvanagarvitāḥ| striyassugrīvabhavane dadarśa sumahābalḥ||4.33.22||

Translation

महाबलः powerful man, सः he, सुग्रीवभवने in Sugriva's palace, विविधाकाराः of different forms, रूपयौवनगर्विताः proud of their youth and beauty, बह्वीः many, स्त्रियः women, ददर्श saw, च and.

Meaning

Powerful Lakshmana saw many females of different forms proud of their youth and charm at the palace of Sugriva.

KK-33-23-24Kishkindha Kanda 33.23–24 (युग्मम्)

दृष्ट्वाऽभिजनसम्पन्नाश्चित्रमाल्यकृतस्रजः। फलमाल्यकृतव्यग्रा भूषणोत्तमभूषिताः।।4.33.23।। नातृप्तान्नापि चाव्यग्रान्नानुदात्तपरिच्छदान्। सुग्रीवानुचरांश्चापि लक्षयामास लक्ष्मणः।।4.33.24।।

dṛṣṭvā'bhijanasampannāścitramālyakṛtasrajḥ| phalamālyakṛtavyagrā bhūṣaṇottamabhūṣitāḥ||4.33.23|| nātṛptānnāpi cāvyagrānnānudāttaparicchadān| sugrīvānucarāṃścāpi lakṣayāmāsa lakṣmaṇḥ||4.33.24||

Translation

लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, अभिजनसम्पन्नाः born of a good race, चित्रमाल्यकृतस्रजः decorated with colourful garlands, फलमाल्यकृतव्यग्राः engaged in making garlands and arranging fruits, भूषणोत्तमभूषिताः wearing choice ornaments, दृष्ट्वा seeing, नातृप्तान् not contented, नापि चा व्यग्रान् who were not busy, नानुदात्तपरिच्छदान् who were not gentle, सुग्रीवानुचरांश्चापि attendants of Sugriva, लक्षयामास he saw.

Meaning

Lakshmana saw women with a good lineage adorned with colourful flower garlands and choicest ornaments engaged in making garlands and arranging fruits. He also saw at Sugriva's palace attendants, gentle, welldressed, contented and not too busy.

KK-33-25Kishkindha Kanda 33.25

कूजितं नूपुराणां च काञ्चीनां निनदं तथा। सन्निशम्य तत श्रीमान्सौमित्रिर्लज्जितोऽभवत्।।4.33.25।।

kūjitṃ nūpurāṇāṃ ca kāñcīnāṃ ninadṃ tathā| sanniśamya tata śrīmānsaumitrirlajjito'bhavat||4.33.25||

Translation

ततः then, श्रीमान् illustrious, सौमित्रिः Saumithri, नूपुराणाम् of anklets, कूजितम् tinkling, तथा likewise, काञ्चीनाम् of bells on the girdles of women, निनदम् jingling sound, निशम्य on hearing, लज्जितः abashed, अभवत् felt.

Meaning

Illustrious Lakshmana felt abashed on hearing the jingling of girdle bells and tinkling of the women's anklets.

KK-33-26Kishkindha Kanda 33.26

रोषवेगप्रकुपितशश्रुत्वा चाभरणस्वनम्। चकार ज्यास्वनं वीरो दिशश्शब्देन पूरयन्।।4.33.26।।

roṣavegaprakupitaśaśrutvā cābharaṇasvanam| cakāra jyāsvanṃ vīro diśaśśabdena pūrayan||4.33.26||

Translation

वीरः hero, आभरणस्वनम् sounds of ornaments, श्रुत्वा on hearing, रोषवेगप्रकुपितः lost temper quickly, दिशः quarters, शब्देन by the sound, पूरयन् while filling, ज्यास्वनम् twang of bowstring, चकार produced.

Meaning

On hearing the sounds of ornaments (of females), heroic Lakshmana lost his temper quickly. He pulled his bowstring forcefully in wrath producing frightening sound filling all quarters.

KK-33-27Kishkindha Kanda 33.27

चारित्रेण महाबाहुरपकृष्ट स्सलक्ष्मणः। तस्थावेकान्तमाश्रित्य रामकोपसमन्वितः।।4.33.27।।

cāritreṇa mahābāhurapakṛṣṭa ssalakṣmaṇḥ| tasthāvekāntamāśritya rāmakopasamanvitḥ||4.33.27||

Translation

रामकोपसमन्वितः overtaken by Rama's anger, महाबाहुः longarmed hero, सः लक्ष्मणः that Lakshmana, चारित्रेण as per tradition, अपकृष्टः moved away, एकान्तम् lonely place, आश्रित्य went, तस्थौ stood.

Meaning

Aware of the anger of Rama (who likes it not), the longarmed Lakshmana moved away from the spot (abstained from entering private apartments) as per tradition, receded to a lonely place and stood.

KK-33-28Kishkindha Kanda 33.28

तेन चापस्वनेनाथ सुग्रीवः प्लवगाधिपः। विज्ञायाऽगमनं त्रस्त स्सञ्चचाल वरासनात्।।4.33.28।।

tena cāpasvanenātha sugrīvḥ plavagādhipḥ| vijñāyā'gamanṃ trasta ssañcacāla varāsanāt||4.33.28||

Translation

अथ then, प्लवगाधिपः lord of monkeys, सः सुग्रीवः that Sugriva, तेन by that, चापस्वनेन sound of the bow, आगमनम् arrival, विज्ञाय sensing, त्रस्तः feared, वरासनात् from the throne, सञ्चचाल alighted at once.

Meaning

Then, sensing the arrival of Lakshmana, by the sound of his bow string, Sugriva the lord of vanaras, alighted at once from the throne.

KK-33-29Kishkindha Kanda 33.29

अङ्गदेन यथा मह्यं पुरस्तात्प्रतिवेदितम्। सुव्यक्तमेष सम्प्राप्त स्सौमित्रिर्भ्रातृवत्सलः।।4.33.29।।

aṅgadena yathā mahyṃ purastātprativeditam| suvyaktameṣa samprāpta ssaumitrirbhrātṛvatsalḥ||4.33.29||

Translation

पुरस्तात् earlier, अङ्गदेन by Angada, मह्यम् to me, यथा as, प्रतिवेदितम् announced, भ्रातृवत्सलः loving brother, एषः this, सौमित्रिः Saumitri, सम्प्राप्तः has come, सुव्यक्तम् it is true.

Meaning

'Truly Saumitri, the loving brother of Rama has arrived as announced by Angada earlier'.

KK-33-30Kishkindha Kanda 33.30

अङ्गदेन समाख्यातं ज्यास्वनेन च वानरः। बुबुधे लक्ष्मणं प्राप्तं मुखं चास्यव्यशुष्यत।।4.33.30।।

aṅgadena samākhyātṃ jyāsvanena ca vānarḥ| bubudhe lakṣmaṇṃ prāptṃ mukhṃ cāsyavyaśuṣyata||4.33.30||

Translation

अङ्गदेन by Angada, ज्यास्वनेन च by the twang, समाख्यातः proclaimed by, वानरः monkeys, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, प्राप्तम् who arrived, बुबुधे knew, अस्य his, मुखं च the mouth, अशुष्यत parched.

Meaning

As proclaimed by Angada and also from the sound of the twang, Sugriva knew about the arrival of Lakshmana. His mouth parched (with fear).

KK-33-31Kishkindha Kanda 33.31

ततस्तारां हरिश्रेष्ठस्सुग्रीवः प्रियदर्शनाम्। उवाच हितमव्यग्रस्त्रास सम्भ्रान्तमानसः।।4.33.31।।

Translation

ततः then, त्रास सम्भ्रान्तमानसः awestruck mind, हरिश्रेष्ठः the best of vanaras, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, प्रियदर्शनाम् pleasing to see, ताराम् Tara, हितम् good words, अव्यग्रम्: clearly, उवाच said.

Meaning

Then Sugriva, the best of monkeys got agitated at heart out of fear. He saw the pleasing Tara and said to her these good words clearly:

KK-33-32Kishkindha Kanda 33.32

किन्नु तत्कारणं सुभ्रु प्रकृत्या मृदुमानसः। सरोष इव सम्प्राप्तो येनायं राघवानुजः।।4.33.32।।

kinnu tatkāraṇṃ subhru prakṛtyā mṛdumānasḥ| saroṣa iva samprāpto yenāyṃ rāghavānujḥ||4.33.32||

Translation

सुभ्रु O lady with beautiful eyebrows, प्रकृत्या by nature, मृदुमानसः softhearted, अयम् this person, राघवानुजः Rama's younger brother, येन since, सरोष इव as though angry, सम्प्राप्तः has come, तत्कारणम् its cause, किं नु what is it?

Meaning

'O Tara with beautiful eyebrows this younger brother of Rama is normally softhearted. But today he arrived here angry. What could be the reason?

KK-33-33Kishkindha Kanda 33.33

किं पश्यसि कुमारस्य रोषस्थानमनिन्दिते। न खल्वकारणे कोपमाहरेन्नरसत्तमः।।4.33.33।।

kiṃ paśyasi kumārasya roṣasthānamanindite| na khalvakāraṇe kopamāharennarasattamḥ||4.33.33||

Translation

अनिन्दिते O blemshless lady, कुमारस्य of the prince, रोषस्थानम् cause for being angry, किम् what? पश्यसि do you see, नरसत्तमः great man, अकारणे without reason, कोपम् anger, न आहरेत् खलु will not display anger.

Meaning

'O blemishless Tara What is the cause of young Lakshmana's anger? Great men do not display anger without reason.

KK-33-34Kishkindha Kanda 33.34

यदस्य कृतमस्माभिर्बुध्यसे किञ्चिदप्रियम्। तदबुद्ध्या सम्प्रधार्याशु क्षिप्रमर्हसि भाषितुम्।।4.33.34।।

yadasya kṛtamasmābhirbudhyase kiñcidapriyam| tadabuddhyā sampradhāryāśu kṣipramarhasi bhāṣitum||4.33.34||

Translation

अस्माभिः by us, अस्य at him, किञ्चित् if any, अप्रियम् displeasing, कृतम् done, बुध्यसे यत् if you that way, तत् that, आशु quickly, बुद्ध्या with your intellect, सम्प्रधार्य considering, क्षिप्रम immediately, अर्हसि you ought to, अभिभाषितुम् to speak.

Meaning

'If anything displeasing has been done by us, you should know and tell me quickly. You ought to speak to him at once.

KK-33-35Kishkindha Kanda 33.35

अथवा स्वयमेवैनं द्रष्टुमर्हसि भामिनि। वचनै स्सान्त्वयुक्तैश्च प्रसादयितुमर्हसि।।4.33.35।।

athavā svayamevainṃ draṣṭumarhasi bhāmini| vacanai ssāntvayuktaiśca prasādayitumarhasi||4.33.35||

Translation

अथवा or else, भामिनि lovely lady, एनम् to him, स्वयमेव yourself personally, द्रष्टुम् to see, अर्हसि you will, सान्त्वयुक्तैः with soothing words, वचनैः by your words, प्रसादयितुम् to please him, अर्हसि you will.

Meaning

'O lovely lady or else, you should see him personally and propitiate him with your soothing words.

KK-33-36Kishkindha Kanda 33.36

त्वद्दर्शन विशुद्धात्मा न स कोपं करिष्यति। न हि स्त्रीषु महात्मानः क्वचित्कुर्वन्ति दारुणम्।।4.33.36।।

tvaddarśana viśuddhātmā na sa kopṃ kariṣyati| na hi strīṣu mahātmānḥ kvacitkurvanti dāruṇam||4.33.36||

Translation

विशुद्धात्मा he is cleansed by you, सः he, त्वद्दर्शन by seeing you, कोपम् anger, न करिष्यति will not be, महात्मानः great men, क्वचित् at any time, स्त्रीषु at women, दारुणम् terrific acts, न कुर्वन्ति हि will not be.

Meaning

'Lakshmana will be clear of all doubts on seeing you and will not be angry. Great men are not harsh to women.

KK-33-37Kishkindha Kanda 33.37

त्वया सान्त्वैरुपक्रान्तं प्रसन्नेन्द्रियमानसम्। ततः कमलपत्राक्षं द्रक्ष्याम्यहमरिन्दमम्।।4.33.37।।

tvayā sāntvairupakrāntṃ prasannendriyamānasam| tatḥ kamalapatrākṣṃ drakṣyāmyahamarindamam||4.33.37||

Translation

सान्त्वै: with pleasing words, त्वया your, उपक्रान्तम् commencing your talk, प्रसन्नेन्द्रियमानसम् having made him happy at heart, कमलपत्राक्षम् lotuspetal eye, अरिन्दमम् a crusher of enemies, अहम् I, ततः then, द्रक्ष्यामि I shall see him.

Meaning

'Start talking to him with pleasing words and make him happy. Then I shall see Lakshmana with eyes like lotuspetals, a subduer of enemies'.

KK-33-38Kishkindha Kanda 33.38

सा प्रस्खलन्ती मदविह्वलाक्षी प्रलम्बकाञ्चीगुण हेमसूत्रा। सलक्षणा लक्ष्मणसन्निधानं जगाम तारा नमिताङ्गयष्टिः।।4.33.38।।

sā praskhalantī madavihvalākṣī pralambakāñcīguṇa hemasūtrā| salakṣaṇā lakṣmaṇasannidhānṃ jagāma tārā namitāṅgayaṣṭiḥ||4.33.38||

Translation

मदविह्वलाक्षी an intoxicated woman with drunkeneyes, प्रलम्बकाञ्चीगुणहेमसूत्रा with long gold string of the girdle hanging, सलक्षणा bashful of her appearance, नमिताङ्गयष्टिः her body bent bow, सा तारा that Tara, प्रस्खलन्ती a faltering woman, लक्ष्मणसन्निधानम् to the presence of Lakshmna, जगाम went.

Meaning

Tara, whose eyes were drowsy with drink, whose long gold string of the girdle was hanging loose appeared before Lakshmana with faltering steps and bent low, bashful of her appearance. (It suggests a state of exhaustion after sexual pleasures).

KK-33-39Kishkindha Kanda 33.39

स तां समीक्ष्यैव हरीशपन्तीं तस्थावुदासीनतया महात्मा। अवाङ्मुखोऽभून्मनुजेन्द्रपुत्रः स्त्रीसन्निकर्षाद्विनिवृत्तकोपः।।4.33.39।।

sa tāṃ samīkṣyaiva harīśapantīṃ tasthāvudāsīnatayā mahātmā| avāṅmukho'bhūnmanujendraputrḥ strīsannikarṣādvinivṛttakopḥ||4.33.39||

Translation

महात्मा great man, सः he, मनुजेन्द्रपुत्रः son of lord among men, हरीशपत्नीम् monkey king's wife, ताम् her, समीक्ष्यैव observing, एव by that, उदासीनतया without any reaction, तस्थौ waited, स्त्रीसन्निकर्षात् due to the presence of female sex close to him, विनिवृत्तकोपः his anger controlled, अवाङ्मुखः turned his face against her, अभूत् remained.

Meaning

Since prince Lakshmana is a great man, he stood with his face down and showing no reaction, controlled his anger due to the presence of a female standing close by.

KK-33-40Kishkindha Kanda 33.40

सा पानयोगाद्विनिवृत्तलज्जा दृष्टिप्रसादाच्च नरेन्द्रसूनोः। उवाच तारा प्रणयप्रगल्भं वाक्यं महार्थं परिसान्त्वपूर्वम्।।4.33.40।।

sā pānayogādvinivṛttalajjā dṛṣṭiprasādācca narendrasūnoḥ| uvāca tārā praṇayapragalbhṃ vākyṃ mahārthṃ parisāntvapūrvam||4.33.40||

Translation

पानयोगात् in a drunken state, नरेन्द्रसूनोः of the prince, दृष्टिप्रसादाच्च by the favour of paying, विनिवृत्तलज्जा shedding bashfulness, सा तारा that Tara, महार्थम् good words, परिसान्त्वपूर्वम् in a pleasing way, प्रणयप्रगल्भम् with friendly eloquence, वाक्यम् words, उवाच said.

Meaning

Setting aside her shyness for being in a drunken state, and observing Lakshmana's favourable disposition, she spoke meaningful words in a pleasing manner with friendly eloquence:

KK-33-41Kishkindha Kanda 33.41

किं कोपमूलं मनुजेन्द्रपुत्र कस्ते न सन्तिष्ठति वाङ्निदेशे। क श्शुष्कवृक्षं वनमापतन्तं दवाग्निमासीदति निर्विशङ्कः।।4.33.41।।

kiṃ kopamūlṃ manujendraputra kaste na santiṣṭhati vāṅnideśe| ka śśuṣkavṛkṣṃ vanamāpatantṃ davāgnimāsīdati nirviśaṅkḥ||4.33.41||

Translation

मनुजेन्द्रपुत्र O son of lord among men, कोपमूलम् cause of anger, किम् what, ते to you, वाङ्निदेशे your word of command, कः who, न सन्तिष्ठति has stood by, शुष्कवृक्षम् dried pieces of wood, वनम् forest, आपतन्तम् advancing, दवाग्निम् forest fire, निर्विशङ्कः without fear, आसीदति rests.

Meaning

'O noble prince what is the cause of your anger? Who has disrespected your command? Who can approach without fear forest fire rushing towards a thicket of dried pieces of wood?'

KK-33-42Kishkindha Kanda 33.42

स तस्या वचनं श्रुत्वा सान्त्वपूर्वमशङ्कितम्। भूयः प्रणयदृष्टार्थं लक्ष्मणो वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।4.33.42।।

sa tasyā vacanṃ śrutvā sāntvapūrvamaśaṅkitam| bhūyḥ praṇayadṛṣṭārthṃ lakṣmaṇo vākyamabravīt||4.33.42||

Translation

सः लक्ष्मणः that Lakshmana, सान्त्वपुर्वम् very pleasantly, भूयः again, प्रणयदृष्टार्थम् said in a friendly way, तस्याः वचनम् her words, श्रुत्वा having heard, अशङ्कितम् without any hesitation, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Having heard Tara's unhesitant submission spoken in a pleasant and friendly manner, Lakshmana replied:

KK-33-43Kishkindha Kanda 33.43

किमयं कामवृत्तस्ते लुप्तधर्मार्थसङ्ग्रहः। भर्ता भर्तृहिते युक्ते न चैनमवबुद्ध्यसे।।4.33.43।।

kimayṃ kāmavṛttaste luptadharmārthasaṅgrahḥ| bhartā bhartṛhite yukte na cainamavabuddhyase||4.33.43||

Translation

भर्तृहिते in the wellbeing of your husband, युक्ते engaged, ते your, भर्ता husband, अयम् this, कामवृत्तः impulsive, लुप्तधर्मार्थसङ्ग्रहः he lost sight of dharma and artha, किम् why, एनम् him, अवबुद्ध्यसे you are not able to know.

Meaning

'O lady, your husband engrossed in sensual pleasures, has lost sight of dharma and artha. Why don't you understand it in the interest of your husband whose wellwisher you are?

KK-33-44Kishkindha Kanda 33.44

न चिन्तयति राज्यार्थं नास्मान् शोकपरायणान्। सामात्यपरिषत्तारे पानमेवोपसेवते।।4.33.44।।

na cintayati rājyārthṃ nāsmān śokaparāyaṇān| sāmātyapariṣattāre pānamevopasevate||4.33.44||

Translation

तारे O Tara, सामात्यपरिषत् the company of ministers, सः he, राज्यार्थम् state affairs, शोकपरायणान् stricken by sorrow, अस्मान् seat, न चिन्तयति he does not think, पानमेव only drinking, उपसेवते attending to.

Meaning

'O Tara that we are in grief Sugriva does not realize. He is not attending to state affairs. He is only enjoying drinking in the company of ministers.

KK-33-45Kishkindha Kanda 33.45

स मासांश्चतुरः कृत्वा प्रमाणं प्लवगेश्वरः। व्यतीतां स्तान्मदव्यग्रो विहरन्नावबुध्यते।।4.33.45।।

sa māsāṃścaturḥ kṛtvā pramāṇṃ plavageśvarḥ| vyatītāṃ stānmadavyagro viharannāvabudhyate||4.33.45||

Translation

सः प्लवगेश्वरः king of monkeys, चतुरः four, मासान् months, प्रमाणम् promised, कृत्वा having made, मदव्यग्रः addicted to drinks, विहरन् enjoying, तान् those, व्यतीतान् exceeded time, नावबुध्यते he is not realising.

Meaning

'The king of monkeys has already spent four months, enjoying drinks. He does not realize that he has flouted his promise.

KK-33-46Kishkindha Kanda 33.46

न हि धर्मार्थसिद्ध्यर्थं पानमेवं प्रशस्यते। पानादर्थश्च धर्मश्च कामश्च परिहीयते।।4.33.46।।

na hi dharmārthasiddhyarthṃ pānamevṃ praśasyate| pānādarthaśca dharmaśca kāmaśca parihīyate||4.33.46||

Translation

धर्मार्थसिद्ध्यर्थम् for accomplishment of dharma and artha, एवम् that way, पानम् drinking, न प्रशस्यते हि not admirable, पानात् by drinking, अर्थश्च material wealth, कामश्च by desire, धर्मश्च morals, परिहीयते will be destroyed.

Meaning

'Drinking this way does not help accomplishment of dharma and artha. It destroys wealth, ambition and righteousness.

KK-33-47Kishkindha Kanda 33.47

धर्मलोपो महांस्तावत्कृते ह्यप्रतिकुर्वतः। अर्थलोपश्च मित्रस्य नाशे गुणवतो महान्।।4.33.47।।

dharmalopo mahāṃstāvatkṛte hyapratikurvatḥ| arthalopaśca mitrasya nāśe guṇavato mahān||4.33.47||

Translation

कृते one who does, अप्रतिकुर्वतः by not rendering help in return, महान् great, धर्मलोपः हि is a violation of dharma, गुणवतः of a virtuous, मित्रस्य friend's, नाशे loss, महान् great, अर्थलोपश्च loss of wealth, अंस्तावच will result in destruction.

Meaning

'Dharma is violated when we help not one who has helped. Loss of a virtuous friend leads to great loss of wealth. It results in destruction.

KK-33-48Kishkindha Kanda 33.48

मित्रं ह्यर्थगुणश्रेष्ठं सत्यधर्मपरायणम्। तद्द्वयं तु परित्यक्तं न तु धर्मे व्यवस्थितम्।।4.33.48।।

mitrṃ hyarthaguṇaśreṣṭhṃ satyadharmaparāyaṇam| taddvayṃ tu parityaktṃ na tu dharme vyavasthitam||4.33.48||

Translation

सत्यधर्मपरायणम् abide in truth and righteousness, मित्रम् friend, अर्थगुणश्रेष्ठम् who excelled in acquiring artha, तत् द्वयम् both these, परित्यक्तम् is given up, धर्मे in righteous, न तु व्यवस्थितम् not abiding.

KK-33-49Kishkindha Kanda 33.49

तदेवं प्रस्तुते कार्ये कार्यमस्माभिरुत्तरम्। यत्कार्यं कार्यतत्त्वज्ञे तदुदाहर्तुमर्हसि।।4.33.49।।

tadevṃ prastute kārye kāryamasmābhiruttaram| yatkāryṃ kāryatattvajñe tadudāhartumarhasi||4.33.49||

Translation

कार्यतत्त्वज्ञे well aware of duty, तत् that, प्रस्तुते कार्ये in this task, एवम् this way, अस्माभिः by us, यत् such, उत्तरं in turn, कार्यम् duty, कार्यम् task, त्वम् you, उदाहर्तुम् to explain, अर्हसि should.

Meaning

'You have a strong sense of duty. You ought to tell him his duty and what we should do in this situation.

KK-33-50Kishkindha Kanda 33.50

सा तस्य धर्मार्थसमाधियुक्तं निशम्य वाक्यं मधुरस्वभावम्। तारा गतार्थे मनुजेन्द्रकार्ये विश्वासयुक्तं तमुवाच भूयः।।4.33.50।।

sā tasya dharmārthasamādhiyuktṃ niśamya vākyṃ madhurasvabhāvam| tārā gatārthe manujendrakārye viśvāsayuktṃ tamuvāca bhūyḥ||4.33.50||

Translation

सा तारा that Tara, तस्य his, धर्मार्थसमाधियुक्तम् a word with proper understanding of dharma and artha, मधुरस्वभावम् good by nature, वाक्यम् words, निशम्य listening to, गतार्थे decisively, मनुजेन्द्रकार्ये the endeavour of Rama, the lord of men, विश्वासयुक्तम् faithfully, तम् him, भूयः again, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

Tara heard the sweet words of Lakshmana which showed his good understanding of dharma and artha. What she said to him in reply reflects her faith in Sugriva's effort to help Rama's cause:

KK-33-51Kishkindha Kanda 33.51

न कोपकालः क्षितिपालपुत्र न चाति कोप स्स्वजने विधेयः। त्वदर्थकामस्य जनस्य तस्य प्रमादमप्यर्हसि वीर सोढुम्।।4.33.51।।

na kopakālḥ kṣitipālaputra na cāti kopa ssvajane vidheyḥ| tvadarthakāmasya janasya tasya pramādamapyarhasi vīra soḍhum||4.33.51||

Translation

क्षितिपालपुत्र O prince, कोपकालः to be angry at this time, न not, स्वजने in your own people, कोपः anger, न चाति विधेयः not to indulge, वीर warrior, त्वदर्थकामस्य of a person desiring to attend to your task, तस्य जनस्य of such people, प्रमादमपि even a mistake, सोढुम् to hear, अर्हसि it is proper.

Meaning

'O prince this is not the time to get angry with your own people. He (Sugriva) is your friend and wishes to do your work. You should bear with him even if he makes a mistake.

KK-33-52Kishkindha Kanda 33.52

कोपं कथं नाम गुणप्रकृष्टः कुमार कुर्यादपकृष्टसत्त्वे। कस्त्वद्विधः कोपवशं हि गच्छे त्सत्त्वावरुद्धस्तपसः प्रसूतिः।।4.33.52।।

kopṃ kathṃ nāma guṇaprakṛṣṭḥ kumāra kuryādapakṛṣṭasattve| kastvadvidhḥ kopavaśṃ hi gacche tsattvāvaruddhastapasḥ prasūtiḥ||4.33.52||

Translation

कुमार prince, गुणप्रकृष्टः one who is richly endowed with virtues, अपकृष्टसत्त्वे whose strength is averted, कोपम् anger, कथं नाम how can, कुर्यात् be entertained, सत्त्वावरुद्धः preeminent in virtues, तपसः of penance, प्रसूतिः source, त्वद्विधः a man like you, कः who, कोपवशम् under the grip of anger, गच्छेत् he may lead.

Meaning

'O prince how can you, richly endowed with virtues be angry with an inferior person? How can a person like you, preeminent in virtues,and a source of great penance fall a victim to anger?

KK-33-53Kishkindha Kanda 33.53

जानामि रोषं हरिवीरबन्धो र्जानामि कार्यस्य च कालसङ्गम्। जानामि कार्यं त्वयि यत्कृतं न स्तच्चापि जानामि यदत्र कार्यम्।।4.33.53।।

jānāmi roṣṃ harivīrabandho rjānāmi kāryasya ca kālasaṅgam| jānāmi kāryṃ tvayi yatkṛtṃ na staccāpi jānāmi yadatra kāryam||4.33.53||

Translation

हरिवीरबन्धोः friend of warrior Sugriva, रोषम् anger, जानामि I know, कार्यस्य of the work, कालसङ्गम् time limit, त्वयि your, यत् न कृतम् whatever is not done, कार्यम् work, जानामि I know, अत्र in this regard, यत् whatever, कार्यम् task, तच्चापि done by you, जानामि is known to me.

Meaning

'I know about the anger of (Rama), the friend of Sugriva. I am aware of the time limit set for his work. I am aware of our omissions in this regard. I also know about the mission.

KK-33-54Kishkindha Kanda 33.54

तच्चापि जानामि यथविषह्यं बलं नरश्रेष्ठ शरीरजस्य। जानामि यस्मिंश्च जनेऽवबद्धं कामेन सुग्रीवमसक्तमद्य।।4.33.54।।

taccāpi jānāmi yathaviṣahyṃ balṃ naraśreṣṭha śarīrajasya| jānāmi yasmiṃśca jane'vabaddhṃ kāmena sugrīvamasaktamadya||4.33.54||

Translation

नरश्रेष्ठ O best of men, शरीरजस्य of passion born out of body, बलम् strength, यथा as such, अविषह्यम् irresistible, तच्चापि and further, जानामि I know, यस्मिन् in whomsoever, जने person, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, असक्तम् not interested, अद्य now, कामेन out of passion, अवबद्धम् bound to, जानामि known to me.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana I am aware of the irresistible strength of lust born out of the body. I am aware of Sugriva's indifference to his duty due to his passion with whomsoever it be.

KK-33-55Kishkindha Kanda 33.55

न कामतन्त्रे तव बुद्धिरस्ति त्वं वै यथा मन्युवशं प्रपन्नः। न देशकालौ हि न चार्थधर्मा ववेक्षते कामरतिर्मनुष्यः।।4.33.55।।

na kāmatantre tava buddhirasti tvṃ vai yathā manyuvaśṃ prapannḥ| na deśakālau hi na cārthadharmā vavekṣate kāmaratirmanuṣyḥ||4.33.55||

Translation

त्वम् you, यथा this way, मन्युवशम् under the grip of anger, प्रपन्नः reached, तव your, बुद्धि:mind, कामतन्त्रे in matters of carnal pleasure, नास्ति not, कामरतिः one who is immersed in sensual pleasures, मनुष्यः man, देशकालौ time and place, न अवेक्षते not see, अर्थधर्मौ च artha and dharma, न not.

Meaning

'You are under the grip of anger and your mind is not involved in carnal desire. One who is engaged in sensual pleasures does not reckon time and place, nor does he consider artha and dharma.

KK-33-56Kishkindha Kanda 33.56

तं कामवृत्तं मम सन्निकृष्टं कामाभियोगाच्च निवृत्तलज्जम्। क्षमस्व तावत्परवीरहन्त स्त्वद्भ्रातरं वानरवंशनाथम्।।4.33.56।।

tṃ kāmavṛttṃ mama sannikṛṣṭṃ kāmābhiyogācca nivṛttalajjam| kṣamasva tāvatparavīrahanta stvadbhrātarṃ vānaravṃśanātham||4.33.56||

Translation

परवीरहन्तः slayer of enemy heroes, कामवृत्तम् a person of (unrestrained) passion, मम to me, सन्निकृष्टम् being nearby, कामाभियोगात् due to involvement in sports of love, निवृत्तलज्जम् without a sense of shame, त्वद्भ्रातरम् your brother like, वानरवंशनाथम् head of vanara family, तम् him, क्षमस्व pardon, ताव so far, so much.

Meaning

'O slayer of enemy heroes pardon Sugriva, the lord of vanara clan, who is to you a brother. He is here indulging in sports of love with me. He has no sense of shame about his passion.

KK-33-57Kishkindha Kanda 33.57

महर्षयो धर्मतपोऽभिकामाः कामानुकामाः प्रतिबद्धमोहाः। अयं प्रकृत्या चपलः कपिस्तु कथं न सज्जेत सुखेषु राजा।।4.33.57।।

maharṣayo dharmatapo'bhikāmāḥ kāmānukāmāḥ pratibaddhamohāḥ| ayṃ prakṛtyā capalḥ kapistu kathṃ na sajjeta sukheṣu rājā||4.33.57||

Translation

धर्मतपोऽभिकामाः committed to dharma and austere practices, महर्षयः sages, कामानुकामाः passionate, प्रतिबद्धमोहाः one who is deluded by sensual gratification, कपिः monkey, प्रकृत्या by nature, चपलः unsteady, अयं राजा this king, सुखेषु for pleasure, कथम् how, न सज्जेत can he not be involved?

Meaning

'Even sages committed to piety and austerity are sometimes deluded by sensual gratification. He is a king and a monkey who is fickle by nature. How can he be not tempted by sensual pleasures'?

KK-33-58Kishkindha Kanda 33.58

इत्येवमुक्त्वा वचनं महार्थं सा वानरी लक्ष्मणमप्रमेयम्। पुन स्सखेदं मदविह्वलञ्च भर्तुर्हितं वाक्यमिदं बभाषे।।4.33.58।।

ityevamuktvā vacanṃ mahārthṃ sā vānarī lakṣmaṇamaprameyam| puna ssakhedṃ madavihvalañca bharturhitṃ vākyamidṃ babhāṣe||4.33.58||

Translation

मदविह्वलञ्च overcome by drunkenness, सा that, वानरी female monkey, अप्रमेयम् unfathomable, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, इत्येवम् in this way, महार्थम् very meaningful, वचनम् these words, उक्त्वा spoken, पुनः again, सखेलम् playful, भर्तुः husband, हितम् good, इदं वाक्यम् these words, बभाषे expressed.

Meaning

Overcome by drunkenness, Tara once again spoke to Lakshmana of unfathomable prowess, in a meaningful way keeping in view the welfare of her playful and drunken lord:

KK-33-59Kishkindha Kanda 33.59

उद्योगस्तु चिराज्ञप्त स्सुग्रीवेण नरोत्तम। कामस्यापि विधेयेन तवार्थप्रतिसाधने।।4.33.59।।

udyogastu cirājñapta ssugrīveṇa narottama| kāmasyāpi vidheyena tavārthapratisādhane||4.33.59||

Translation

नरोत्तम best of men, कामस्य by sense pleasures, विधेयेनापि although overpowered, सुग्रीवेण Sugriva, तव your, अर्थप्रतिसाधने to accomplish your task, उद्योगः efforts, चिराज्ञप्तः is ordered long ago.

Meaning

'O best of men although overpowered by sense pleasures, Sugriva has already initiated efforts for the accomplishment of your work.

KK-33-60Kishkindha Kanda 33.60

आगता हि महावीर्या हरयः कामरूपिणः। कोटीशतसहस्राणि नानानगनिवासिनः।।4.33.60।।

āgatā hi mahāvīryā harayḥ kāmarūpiṇḥ| koṭīśatasahasrāṇi nānānaganivāsinḥ||4.33.60||

Translation

महावीर्या: great warriors, कामरूपिणः those who can assume any form they desire, नानानगनिवासिनः residing at different mountains, कोटीशतसहस्राणि hundreds and thousands of crores, हरयः monkeys, आगताः हि have arrived.

Meaning

'O great warrior monkeys residing at different mountains who can assume any form they like have arrived in hundreds and thousands of crores.

KK-33-61Kishkindha Kanda 33.61

तदागच्छ महाबाहो चारित्रं रक्षितं त्वया। अच्छलं मित्रभावेन सतां दारावलोकनम्।।4.33.61।।

tadāgaccha mahābāho cāritrṃ rakṣitṃ tvayā| acchalṃ mitrabhāvena satāṃ dārāvalokanam||4.33.61||

Translation

महाबाहो longarmed one, तत् so, आगच्छ come in, त्वया by you, चारित्रम् character, रक्षितम् is guarded, सताम् of the pious people, मित्रभावेन with friendly feeling, दारावलोकनम् seeing the wife, अच्छलम् not a deception.

Meaning

'O longarmed one come in. You have been standing out guarding your character. It is not a mistake to see the wife of a pious person with a friendly feeling.

KK-33-62Kishkindha Kanda 33.62

तारया चाभ्यनुज्ञातस्त्वरया चापि चोदितः। प्रविवेश महाबाहुरभ्यन्तरमरिन्दमः।।4.33.62।।

tārayā cābhyanujñātastvarayā cāpi coditḥ| praviveśa mahābāhurabhyantaramarindamḥ||4.33.62||

Translation

महाबाहुः strongarmed, अरिन्दमः subduer of enemies, तारया च by Tara also, अभ्यनुज्ञातः permitted, त्वरया चापि quickly, चोदितः thinking, अभ्यन्तरम् harem, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

Strongarmed Lakshmana, a subduer of enemies, permitted by Tara entered the harem immediately (thinking of the urgency of the task).

KK-33-63-65Kishkindha Kanda 33.63–65 (त्रिकम्)

तत स्सुग्रीवमासीनं काञ्चने परमासने। महार्हास्तरणोपेते ददर्शादित्यसन्निभम्।।4.33.63।। दिव्याभणचित्राङ्गं दिव्यरूपं यशस्विनम्। दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं महेन्द्रमिव दुर्जयम्।।4.33.64।। दिव्याभरणमालाभिः प्रमदाभि स्समावृतम्। संरब्धतररक्ताक्षो बभूवान्तकसन्निभः।।4.33.65।।

tata ssugrīvamāsīnṃ kāñcane paramāsane| mahārhāstaraṇopete dadarśādityasannibham||4.33.63|| divyābhaṇacitrāṅgṃ divyarūpṃ yaśasvinam| divyamālyāmbaradharṃ mahendramiva durjayam||4.33.64|| divyābharaṇamālābhiḥ pramadābhi ssamāvṛtam| sṃrabdhatararaktākṣo babhūvāntakasannibhḥ||4.33.65||

Translation

ततः then, महार्हास्तरणोपेते strewn with fine cushions, काञ्चने on a golden, परमासने on a grand throne, आसीनम् seated, आदित्यसन्निभम् like the Sun god, दिव्याभरणचित्राङ्गम् decorated with excellent ornaments, दिव्यरूपम् heavenly in appearance, यशस्विनम् famous, दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरम् adorned with beautiful garlands, महेन्द्रमिव like the lord of gods, दुर्जयम् like one who is difficult to be conquered, दिव्याभरणमाल्याभिः adorned with excellent ornaments, garlands and clothes, प्रमदाभिः by women decked with, समावृतम् surrounded, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, ददर्श saw, संरब्धतररक्ताक्षः bewildered with eyes turned red, निभः resembling, बभूव appeared, अन्तकसन्निभः like Yama the god of death.

Meaning

Lakshmana saw famous Sugriva, difficult to be conquered, seated on a golden throne strewn around with cushions, decorated with ornaments of different colours, endearing in appearance, decked with beautiful garlands and clothes. He was surrounded by women adorned with most fascinating ornaments and garlands. Bewildered at the sight, Lakshmana's eyes turned red in anger. He appeared like Yama, lord of death.
