KK-35-1Kishkindha Kanda 35.1

तथा ब्रुवाणं सौमित्रिं प्रदीप्तमिव तेजसा। अब्रवील्लक्ष्मणं तारा ताराधिपनिभानना।।4.35.1।।

tathā bruvāṇṃ saumitriṃ pradīptamiva tejasā| abravīllakṣmaṇṃ tārā tārādhipanibhānanā||4.35.1||

Translation

तथा that way, ब्रुवाणम् when he spoke, तेजसा with brilliance, प्रदीप्तमिव as if glowing, सौमित्रिम् to Saumitri, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, ताराधिपनिभानना a lady with a Moonlike face, तारा Tara, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

While Lakshmana, the son of Sumitra, was glowing like fire with his brilliance, thus spoke the moonfaced Tara:

KK-35-2Kishkindha Kanda 35.2

नैवं लक्ष्मण वक्तव्यो नायं परुषमर्हति। हरीणामीश्वरश्श्रोतुं तव वक्त्राद्विशेषतः।।4.35.2।।

naivṃ lakṣmaṇa vaktavyo nāyṃ paruṣamarhati| harīṇāmīśvaraśśrotuṃ tava vaktrādviśeṣatḥ||4.35.2||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, अयम् this, हरीणामीश्वरः king of vanaras, एवम् in that way, न वक्तव्यः not speak, विशेषतः specially, तव your, वक्त्रात् your words, परुषम् harsh, श्रोतुम् to listen, नार्हति not deserve.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana you, in particular, should not speak to the king of vanaras in that manner. He does not deserve to hear from your mouth words which are harsh.

KK-35-3Kishkindha Kanda 35.3

नैवाकृतज्ञस्सुग्रीवो न शठो नापि दारुणः। नैवानृतकथो वीर न जिह्मश्च कपीश्वरः।।4.35.3।।

naivākṛtajñassugrīvo na śaṭho nāpi dāruṇḥ| naivānṛtakatho vīra na jihmaśca kapīśvarḥ||4.35.3||

Translation

वीर O hero, कपीश्वरः king of monkeys, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, अकृतज्ञः ungrateful, न not, शठः deceitful, न not, अपि even, न not, अनृतकथः one who tells a lie, नैव nor, जिह्मः च and crooked, न not.

Meaning

'O hero Sugriva, king of monkeys, is not ungrateful or deceitful, He is neither crooked nor false.

KK-35-4Kishkindha Kanda 35.4

उपकारं कृतं वीरो नाप्ययं विस्मृतः कपिः। रामेण वीर सुग्रीवो यदन्यैर्दुष्करं रणे।।4.35.4।।

upakārṃ kṛtṃ vīro nāpyayṃ vismṛtḥ kapiḥ| rāmeṇa vīra sugrīvo yadanyairduṣkarṃ raṇe||4.35.4||

Translation

वीर hero, कपिः monkey, अयं सुग्रीवः this Sugriva, रणे in war, यत् such, अन्यै: by others, दुष्करम् difficult, रामेण by Rama, कृतम् has been done, उपकारम् help, न विस्मृतः अपि and not forget.

Meaning

'O hero this warrior Sugriva has not forgotten the help rendered by Rama in combat which was difficult (to win).

KK-35-5Kishkindha Kanda 35.5

रामप्रसादात्कीर्तिञ्च कपिराज्यं च शाश्वतम्। प्राप्तवानिह सुग्रीवो रुमां मां च परन्तप ।।4.35.5।।

rāmaprasādātkīrtiñca kapirājyṃ ca śāśvatam| prāptavāniha sugrīvo rumāṃ māṃ ca parantapa ||4.35.5||

Translation

परन्तप O scorcher of enemies, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, इह now, रामप्रसादात् by Rama's grace, कीर्तिं च fame and, शाश्वतम् permanent, कपिराज्यं च kingdom of monkeys, रुमाम् Ruma, मां च and me, प्राप्तवान् attained.

Meaning

'O scorcher of enemies it is by Rama's grace that Sugriva has attained fame, the kingdom of monkeys and Ruma and me.

KK-35-6Kishkindha Kanda 35.6

सुदुःखं शयितः पूर्वं प्राप्येदं सुखमुत्तमम्। प्राप्तकालं न जानीते विश्वामित्रो यथा मुनिः।।4.35.6।।

suduḥkhṃ śayitḥ pūrvṃ prāpyedṃ sukhamuttamam| prāptakālṃ na jānīte viśvāmitro yathā muniḥ||4.35.6||

Translation

पूर्वम् earlier, सुदुःखं शयितः sleeping unhappily, उत्तमम् best, इदम् this, सुखम् happiness, प्राप्य having obtained, विश्वामित्रः Visvamitra, मुनिः यथा like the sage, प्राप्तकालम् time to attend to his duty, न जानीते I did not know.

Meaning

'Sleep did not come to him in deep distress in the past, and now that great happiness has come, he does not realize that it is time to act (search for Sita). He behaves like sage Viswamitra.

KK-35-7Kishkindha Kanda 35.7

घृताच्यां किल संसक्तो दशवर्षाणि लक्ष्मण। अहोऽमन्यत धर्मात्मा विश्वामित्रो महामुनिः।।4.35.7।।

ghṛtācyāṃ kila sṃsakto daśavarṣāṇi lakṣmaṇa| aho'manyata dharmātmā viśvāmitro mahāmuniḥ||4.35.7||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, धर्मात्मा great self, महामुनिः great sage, विश्वामित्रः Visvamitra, दश ten, वर्षाणि years, घृताच्याम् with an apsara Gritachi, संसक्तः in union, अह one day, अमन्यत thought, किल indeed.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana great sage Visvamitra was in union with an apsara Gritachi for ten years and felt it was just one day indeed

KK-35-8Kishkindha Kanda 35.8

स हि प्राप्तं न जानीते कालं कालविदां वरः। विश्वामित्रो महातेजाः किं पुनर्यः पृथग्जनः।।4.35.8।।

sa hi prāptṃ na jānīte kālṃ kālavidāṃ varḥ| viśvāmitro mahātejāḥ kiṃ punaryḥ pṛthagjanḥ||4.35.8||

Translation

कालविदाम् वरः a distinguished person among those who know the value of time, महातेजाः brilliant, सः that, विश्वामित्रः Visvamitra, प्राप्त कालम् right time, न जानीते did not know, यः he who, पृथग्जनः ordinary man, किं पुनः what else.

Meaning

'If the brilliant and the most distinguished of those who knew the value of time did not realise the passing of time, what can be said of an ordinary person?

KK-35-9Kishkindha Kanda 35.9

देहधर्मं गतस्यास्य परिश्रान्तस्य लक्ष्मण। अवितृप्तस्य कामेषु कामं क्षन्तुमिहार्हसि।।4.35.9।।

dehadharmṃ gatasyāsya pariśrāntasya lakṣmaṇa| avitṛptasya kāmeṣu kāmṃ kṣantumihārhasi||4.35.9||

Translation

लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, देहधर्मं गतस्य attending to physical needs, परिश्रान्तस्य tired person, कामेषु in lust, अवितृप्तस्य finding no satisfaction, अस्य his, कामम् love, इह now, क्षन्तुम् to pardon, अर्हसि should.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana you should pardon him since he is not yet satisfied, though tired, with the struggle for the fulfilment of his sensual pleasures.

KK-35-10Kishkindha Kanda 35.10

न च रोषवशं तात गन्तुमर्हसि लक्ष्मण। निश्चयार्थमविज्ञाय सहसा प्राकृतो यथा।।4.35.10।।

na ca roṣavaśṃ tāta gantumarhasi lakṣmaṇa| niścayārthamavijñāya sahasā prākṛto yathā||4.35.10||

Translation

तात O dear, लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, निश्चयार्थम् true meaning, अविज्ञाय not knowing, प्राकृतो यथा like an ordinary man, सहसा rashly, रोषवशम् being angry, गन्तुम् to be, न अर्हसि is not proper.

Meaning

'O dear Lakshmana not knowing the true intention of Sugriva, it is not proper for you to be rashly angry like an ordinary man.

KK-35-11Kishkindha Kanda 35.11

सत्त्वयुक्ता हि पुरुषास्त्वद्विधाः पुरुषर्षभ। अविमृश्य न रोषस्य सहसा यान्ति वश्यताम्।।4.35.11।।

sattvayuktā hi puruṣāstvadvidhāḥ puruṣarṣabha| avimṛśya na roṣasya sahasā yānti vaśyatām||4.35.11||

Translation

पुरुषर्षभ O bull among men, सत्त्वयुक्ताः people with right vision, त्वद्विधाः people like you, पुरुषाः men, अविमृश्य not thinking rightly, सहसा rashly, रोषस्य of anger, वश्यताम् to become, न यान्ति do not get.

Meaning

'O bull among men men with right vision like you do not become angry instantly without right thinking.

KK-35-12Kishkindha Kanda 35.12

प्रसादये त्वां धर्मज्ञ सुग्रीवार्थे समाहिता। महान्रोषसमुत्पन्न स्संरम्भस्त्यज्यतामयम्।।4.35.12।।

prasādaye tvāṃ dharmajña sugrīvārthe samāhitā| mahānroṣasamutpanna ssṃrambhastyajyatāmayam||4.35.12||

Translation

धर्मज्ञ knower of righteousness, समाहिता a wellcomposed woman, सुग्रीवार्थे for the sake of Sugriva, त्वाम् you, प्रसादये I appease you, रोषसमुत्पन्नः arising out of this anger, महान् great, अयम् this, संरम्भः agitation, त्यज्यताम् give up.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana, knower of dharma, give up your agitation arising out of great anger. Be composed for the sake of Sugriva.

KK-35-13Kishkindha Kanda 35.13

रुमां मां कपि राज्यं च धनधान्यवसूनि च। रामप्रियार्थं सुग्रीवस्त्यजेदिति मतिर्मम।।4.35.13।।

rumāṃ māṃ kapi rājyṃ ca dhanadhānyavasūni ca| rāmapriyārthṃ sugrīvastyajediti matirmama||4.35.13||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, रामप्रियार्थम् for Rama's pleasure, रुमाम् Ruma, मां me, कपिराज्यम् monkey kingdom, धनधान्यवसूनि च wealth, grain and other treasures, त्यजेत् will renounce, इति this is, मम my, मतिः feeling in mind.

Meaning

'I feel Sugriva should (is prepared to) renounce the monkeykingdom, wealth, grains and other treasures and even Ruma and me for the pleasure of Rama.

KK-35-14Kishkindha Kanda 35.14

समानेष्यति सुग्रीव स्सीतया सह राघवम्। शशाङ्कमिव रोहिण्या निहत्वा रावणं रणे।।4.35.14।।

samāneṣyati sugrīva ssītayā saha rāghavam| śaśāṅkamiva rohiṇyā nihatvā rāvaṇṃ raṇe||4.35.14||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, रणे in war, हत्वा having killed, रावणं Ravana, शशाङ्कम् the Moon, रोहिण्या इव like with Rohini, राघवम् Rama, सीतया सह with Sita, समानेष्यति will make them meet.

Meaning

'Killing Ravana in war, Sugriva will restore Sita soon to Rama.Rama will join Sita like Moon joins Rohini.

KK-35-15Kishkindha Kanda 35.15

शतकोटिसहस्राणि लङ्कायां किल राक्षसाः। आयुतानि च षट्त्रिंशत्सहस्राणि शतानि च।।4.35.15।।

śatakoṭisahasrāṇi laṅkāyāṃ kila rākṣasāḥ| āyutāni ca ṣaṭtriṃśatsahasrāṇi śatāni ca||4.35.15||

Translation

लङ्कायाम् at Lanka, राक्षसाः demons, शतकोटिसहस्राणि a hundred thousand crores, षट्त्रिंशत् thirtysix times, आयुतानि च ten thousandmyriads, सहस्राणि thousands, शतानि च and hundreds.

Meaning

'The number of demons in Lanka is reported to be a hundred thousand crore, three lakh, ninetynine thousand and six hundred. (Note: Indian tradition has numbers up to eighteen digits. One hundred thousand crores is equal to a 'mahapadma' which has thirteen digits. The number described here is 1000000399600.)

KK-35-16Kishkindha Kanda 35.16

अहत्वा तांश्च दुर्धर्षान्राक्षसान्कामरूपिणः। न शक्यो रावणो हन्तुं येन सा मैथिली हृता।।4.35.16।।

ahatvā tāṃśca durdharṣānrākṣasānkāmarūpiṇḥ| na śakyo rāvaṇo hantuṃ yena sā maithilī hṛtā||4.35.16||

Translation

दुर्धर्षान् unassailable, कामरूपिणः who can assume any form at will, तान् them, राक्षसान् demons, अहत्वा without killing, येन by whomsoever, सा she, मैथिली Maithili, हृता stolen, रावण: Ravana, हन्तुम् to kill, न शक्यः not possible.

Meaning

'It is not possible to kill Ravana who has stolen Sita without killing those unassailable demons who can assume any form at their will.

KK-35-17Kishkindha Kanda 35.17

ते न शक्या रणे हन्तुमसहायेन लक्ष्मण। रावणः क्रूरकर्मा च सुग्रीवेण विशेषतः।।4.35.17।।

te na śakyā raṇe hantumasahāyena lakṣmaṇa| rāvaṇḥ krūrakarmā ca sugrīveṇa viśeṣatḥ||4.35.17||

Translation

लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, ते those, क्रूरकर्मा evildoer, रावणः Ravana, असहायेन without any help, रणे in war, हन्तुम् to kill, न शक्याः not possible, सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, विशेषतः specially.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana moreover it is not possible for Sugriva alone to kill the wicked Ravana without the help of the monkeys.

KK-35-18Kishkindha Kanda 35.18

एवमाख्यातवान्वाली स ह्यभिज्ञो हरीश्वरः। आगमस्तु न मे व्यक्तश्श्रवात्तस्माद्ब्रवीम्यहम्।।4.35.18।।

evamākhyātavānvālī sa hyabhijño harīśvarḥ| āgamastu na me vyaktaśśravāttasmādbravīmyaham||4.35.18||

Translation

वाली Vali, एवम् in that way, आख्यातवान् gave an account, सः that, हरीश्वरः lord of monkeys, अभिज्ञः हि a well informed person, आगमः source, मे to myself, न व्यक्तः not known, तस्मात् therefore, श्रवात् from what is heard, अहम् I, ब्रवीमि I am speaking.

Meaning

Vali, the wellinformed lord of the monkeys, has given an account of the demons. The source of the account is not known to me.Therefore I am speaking from what I have heard.

KK-35-19Kishkindha Kanda 35.19

त्वत्सहायनिमित्तं वै प्रेषिता हरिपुङ्गवाः। आनेतुं वानरान्युद्धे सुबहून्हरियूधपान्।।4.35.19।।

tvatsahāyanimittṃ vai preṣitā haripuṅgavāḥ| ānetuṃ vānarānyuddhe subahūnhariyūdhapān||4.35.19||

Translation

तत् then, युद्धे in war, त्वत् सहायनिमित्तम् for helping you, हरियूधपान् troops of monkeys, सुबहून् in multitudes, वानरान् monkeys, आनेतुम् to bring, हरिपुङ्गवाः leaders of monkeys, प्रेषिताः sent.

Meaning

'Monkey chiefs have been sent to bring multitudes of monkey leaders to help you in the battle.

KK-35-20Kishkindha Kanda 35.20

तांश्च प्रतीक्षमाणोऽयं विक्रान्तात्सुमहाबलान्। राघवस्यार्थसिध्यर्थं न निर्याति हरीश्वरः।।4.35.20।।

tāṃśca pratīkṣamāṇo'yṃ vikrāntātsumahābalān| rāghavasyārthasidhyarthṃ na niryāti harīśvarḥ||4.35.20||

Translation

विक्रान्तां powerful, अयम् this, हरीश्वरः Sugriva, महाबलान् strong, तान् them, राघवस्य for Rama's, अर्थसिध्यर्थम् to accomplish his task, प्रतीक्षमाणः awaiting, न निर्याति not yet started.

Meaning

'Sugriva is awaiting the arrival of the powerful and strong vanaras without whose help he cannot accomplish Rama's task.Therefore he has not yet started (the search).

KK-35-21Kishkindha Kanda 35.21

कृता तु संस्था सौमित्रे सुग्रीवेण पुरा यथा। अद्य तैर्वानरैस्सर्वैरागन्तव्यं महाबलैः।।4.35.21।।

kṛtā tu sṃsthā saumitre sugrīveṇa purā yathā| adya tairvānaraissarvairāgantavyṃ mahābalaiḥ||4.35.21||

Translation

सौमित्रे O Suamitri, सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, पुरा earlier, संस्था promulgated an ordinance, यथा like that, कृता is ordered by, महाबलैः mighty, सर्वैः by all, तैः them, वानरैः by vanaras, अद्य now, आगन्तव्यम् should be reaching.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana since Sugriva has already promulgated an ordinance to all the mighty vanaras, they should be all arriving by now.

KK-35-22Kishkindha Kanda 35.22

ऋक्षकोटिसहस्राणि गोलाङ्गूलशतानि च। अद्य त्वामुपयास्यन्ति जहि कोपमरिन्दम। कोट्योऽनेकास्तु काकुत्स्थ कपीनां दीप्ततेजसाम्।।4.35.22।।

ṛkṣakoṭisahasrāṇi golāṅgūlaśatāni ca| adya tvāmupayāsyanti jahi kopamarindama| koṭyo'nekāstu kākutstha kapīnāṃ dīptatejasām||4.35.22||

Translation

अरिन्दम subduer of enemies, काकुत्स्थ Lakshmana, अद्य now, ऋक्षकोटिसहस्राणि thousands of crores of bears, गोलाङ्गूलशतानि hundreds of golangulas (monkeys with long tails like those of cows), दीप्ततेजसाम् of fiery spirit, कपीनाम् of monkeys, अनेकाः many, कोट्यः crores, त्वाम् your, उपयास्यन्ति will attend on you, कोपम् anger, जहि give up.

KK-35-23Kishkindha Kanda 35.23

तव हि मुखमिदं निरीक्ष्य कोपात् क्षतजनिभे नयने निरीक्षमाणाः। हरिवरवनिता न यान्ति शान्तिं प्रथमभयस्य हि शङ्कितास्तु सर्वाः।।4.35.23।।

tava hi mukhamidṃ nirīkṣya kopāt kṣatajanibhe nayane nirīkṣamāṇāḥ| harivaravanitā na yānti śāntiṃ prathamabhayasya hi śaṅkitāstu sarvāḥ||4.35.23||

Translation

हरिवरवनिताः wives of foremost of monkeys, तव your, इदम् this, मुखम् face, निरीक्ष्य on seeing, कोपात् from anger, क्षतजनिभे resembling blood, नयने eyes, निरीक्षमाणाः looking at the eyes, शान्तिम् peace, न यान्ति not able to, सर्वाः all, प्रथमभयस्य of the earlier fear, शङ्कितास्तु suspecting.

Meaning

'Looking at your angry countenance with bloodred eyes, the wives of the foremost of monkeys are frightened by the possibility of similar danger of the past (of Vali's death) and do not find peace of mind.' इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे पञ्चत्रिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the thirtyfifth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
