KK-36-1Kishkindha Kanda 36.1

इत्युक्तस्तारया वाक्यं प्रश्रितं धर्मसंहितम्। मृदुस्वभावस्सौमित्रिः प्रतिजग्राह तद्वचः।।4.36.1।।

ityuktastārayā vākyṃ praśritṃ dharmasṃhitam| mṛdusvabhāvassaumitriḥ pratijagrāha tadvacḥ||4.36.1||

Translation

इति this, तारया by Tara, प्रश्रितम् courteous, धर्मसंहितम् justifiable, वाक्यम् words, उक्तः having been told, मृदुस्वभावः of gentle nature, सौमित्रिः Saumitri, तत् that, वचः word, प्रतिजग्राह accepted.

Meaning

Thus the gentlenatured Saumitri accepted Tara's courteous words sanctioned by dharma.

KK-36-2Kishkindha Kanda 36.2

तस्मिन्प्रतिगृहीते तु वाक्ये हरिगणेश्वरः। लक्ष्मणात्सुमहत्त्रासं वस्त्रं क्लिन्नमिवात्यजत्।।4.36.2।।

tasminpratigṛhīte tu vākye harigaṇeśvarḥ| lakṣmaṇātsumahattrāsṃ vastrṃ klinnamivātyajat||4.36.2||

Translation

तस्मिन् when such, वाक्ये words, प्रतिगृहीते were accepted, हरिगणेश्वरः leader of the vanara clan, लक्ष्मणात् from Lakshmana, सुमहत् great, त्रासम् fear, क्लिन्नम् wet, वस्त्रमिव like a garment, अत्यजत् cast aside.

Meaning

Sugriva, king of the vanara clan, cast aside his great fear when Lakshmana accepted the words of Tara just as one discards a wet garment from the body.

KK-36-3Kishkindha Kanda 36.3

ततः कण्ठगतं माल्यं चित्रं बहुगुणं महत्। चिच्छेद विमदश्चासीत्सुग्रीवो वानरेश्वरः।।4.36.3।।

tatḥ kaṇṭhagatṃ mālyṃ citrṃ bahuguṇṃ mahat| ciccheda vimadaścāsītsugrīvo vānareśvarḥ||4.36.3||

Translation

ततः then, वानरेश्वरः lord of vanaras, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, कण्ठगतम् worn on the neck, चित्रम् colourful, बहुगुणम् valuable, महत् great, माल्यम् garland, चिच्छेद tore off, विमदश्च relieved (from drunkenness), आसीत् got free.

Meaning

Thereupon Sugriva, relieved from his drunken state tore off the great, colourful valuable garland worn on his neck.

KK-36-4Kishkindha Kanda 36.4

स लक्ष्मणं भीमबलं सर्ववानरसत्तमः। अब्रवीत्प्रश्रितं वाक्यं सुग्रीव स्सम्प्रहर्षयन्।।4.36.4।।

sa lakṣmaṇṃ bhīmabalṃ sarvavānarasattamḥ| abravītpraśritṃ vākyṃ sugrīva ssampraharṣayan||4.36.4||

Translation

सर्ववानरसत्तमः the noble of all the vanaras, सः सुग्रीवः that Sugriva, भीमबलम् a man of great prowess, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, सम्प्रहर्षयन् pleasing manner, प्रश्रितम् वाक्यम् these polite words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Sugriva, the noblest of all monkeys, spoke these polite words in a pleasing manner to Lakshmana of terrific strength:

KK-36-5Kishkindha Kanda 36.5

प्रणष्टा श्रीश्च कीर्तिश्च कपिराज्यं च शाश्वतम्। रामप्रसादात्सौमित्रे पुन: प्राप्तमिदं मया।।4.36.5।।

praṇaṣṭā śrīśca kīrtiśca kapirājyṃ ca śāśvatam| rāmaprasādātsaumitre puna: prāptamidṃ mayā||4.36.5||

Translation

सौमित्रे O Saumitri, प्रणष्टा lost from me, श्री:च prosperity also, कीर्ति: च and fame, शाश्वतम् permanent, कपिराज्यं च and the kingdom of monkeys, इदम् this, रामप्रसादात् by the grace of Rama, मया by me, पुनः again, प्राप्तम् has been regained.

Meaning

'O Saumitri my prosperity, fame and the permanent sovereignty of vanaras had been lost. It was regained by the grace of Rama.

KK-36-6Kishkindha Kanda 36.6

कश्शक्तस्तस्य देवस्य ख्यातस्य स्वेन कर्मणा। तादृशं विक्रमं वीर प्रतिकर्तुमरिन्दम।।4.36.6।।

kaśśaktastasya devasya khyātasya svena karmaṇā| tādṛśṃ vikramṃ vīra pratikartumarindama||4.36.6||

Translation

अरिन्दम crusher of enemies, स्वेन his own, कर्मणा by deeds, ख्यातस्य of a famed, देवस्य lord's, तस्य his, शक्तः is possible, कः who, प्रतिकर्तुम् ever to repay, तादृशम् such, विक्रमं वीर heroic valour.

Meaning

'O crusher of enemies how is it possible to repay the famous lord Rama's valour (in killing Vali)?

KK-36-7Kishkindha Kanda 36.7

सीतां प्राप्स्यति धर्मात्मा वधिष्यति च रावणम्। सहायमात्रेण मया राघव स्स्वेन तेजसा।।4.36.7।।

sītāṃ prāpsyati dharmātmā vadhiṣyati ca rāvaṇam| sahāyamātreṇa mayā rāghava ssvena tejasā||4.36.7||

Translation

धर्मात्मा राघवः righteous Rama, सहायमात्रेण only be an assistant, मया by me, स्वेन तेजसा by his own fiery energy, सीताम् Sita, प्राप्स्यति he will get back, रावणम् Ravana,वधिष्यति च he will kill.

Meaning

'Righteous Rama can merely restore Sita with my assistance. By his own fiery energy he will kill Ravana.

KK-36-8Kishkindha Kanda 36.8

सहायकृत्यं किं तस्य येन सप्त महाद्रुमाः। शैलश्च वसुधा चैव बाणेनैकेन दारिताः।।4.36.8।।

sahāyakṛtyṃ kiṃ tasya yena sapta mahādrumāḥ| śailaśca vasudhā caiva bāṇenaikena dāritāḥ||4.36.8||

Translation

येन by whomsoever, सप्त seven, महाद्रुमाः huge trees, शैलश्च mountain too, वसुधा चैव and earth also, एकेन by only one, बाणेन with an arrow, दारिताः shattered, तस्य to him, सहायकृत्यम् assistance to be done, किम् what.

Meaning

'Rama shattered seven huge trees, a mountain and earth with a single arrow. What assistance does he need?

KK-36-9Kishkindha Kanda 36.9

धनुर्विष्फारयानस्य यस्य शब्देन लक्ष्मण। सशैला कम्पिता भूमिस्सहायै: किन्नु तस्य वै।।4.36.9।।

dhanurviṣphārayānasya yasya śabdena lakṣmaṇa| saśailā kampitā bhūmissahāyai: kinnu tasya vai||4.36.9||

Translation

लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, धनुः bow, विष्फारयानस्य with the twang of his bow, यस्य its, शब्देन by the sound, सशैला: even the mountains, भूमिः earth, कम्पिता was shaken तस्य his, सहायैः assistance, किं why?

Meaning

'O Lakshmana the twang of his bow shook even the mountains and the earth. What assistance does he need?

KK-36-10Kishkindha Kanda 36.10

अनुयात्रां नरेन्द्रस्य करिष्येऽहं नरर्षभ। गच्छतो रावणं हन्तुं वैरिणं सपुरस्सरम्।।4.36.10।।

anuyātrāṃ narendrasya kariṣye'hṃ nararṣabha| gacchato rāvaṇṃ hantuṃ vairiṇṃ sapurassaram||4.36.10||

Translation

नरर्षभ O bull among men, सपुरस्सरम् along with his followers, वैरिणम् the enemy, रावणम् Ravana, हन्तुम् to kill, गच्छतः while going, नरेन्द्रस्य king's, अहम् I, अनुयात्राम् following, करिष्ये I shall.

Meaning

'O Lakshmana, bull among men I shall only join him along with others when he leads the army to kill Ravana.

KK-36-11Kishkindha Kanda 36.11

यदि किञ्चिदतिक्रान्तं विश्वासात्प्रणयेन वा। प्रेष्यस्य क्षमितव्यं मे न कश्चिन्नापराध्यति।।4.36.11।।

yadi kiñcidatikrāntṃ viśvāsātpraṇayena vā| preṣyasya kṣamitavyṃ me na kaścinnāparādhyati||4.36.11||

Translation

विश्वासात् due to faith, प्रणयेन वा or with love, किञ्चित् even a little, अतिक्रान्तं यदि have exceeded time, प्रेष्यस्य of a servant, मे my, क्षमितव्यम् one should pardon, कश्चित् any one, नापराध्यति इति न is not flawless in the world.

Meaning

'If I have committed even a little transgression in my faith in Rama or affection for him and exceeded the time limit, my mistakes are to be excused as one would pardons a servant. No one is flawless in the world.'

KK-36-12Kishkindha Kanda 36.12

ति तस्य ब्रुवाणस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः। अभवल्लक्ष्मणः प्रीतः प्रेम्णा चैवमुवाच ह।।4.36.12।।

ti tasya bruvāṇasya sugrīvasya mahātmanḥ| abhavallakṣmaṇḥ prītḥ premṇā caivamuvāca ha||4.36.12||

Translation

महात्मनः of the great self, तस्य his, सुग्रीवस्य Sugriva's, इति thus, ब्रुवाणस्य of him while speaking, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, प्रीतः अभवत् was happy, प्रेम्णा with affection, च also, एवम् in this way, उवाच ह spoke.

Meaning

Lakshmana who was happy to hear great Sugriva replied affectionately:

KK-36-13Kishkindha Kanda 36.13

सर्वथा हि मम भ्राता सनाथो वानरेश्वर। त्वया नाथेन सुग्रीव प्रश्रितेन विशेषतः।।4.36.13।।

sarvathā hi mama bhrātā sanātho vānareśvara| tvayā nāthena sugrīva praśritena viśeṣatḥ||4.36.13||

Translation

वानरेश्वर O king of monkeys, सुग्रीव Sugriva, नाथेन by a king, विशेषतः specially, प्रश्रितेन by a courteous one, त्वया you, मम my, भ्राता brother, सर्वथा in all ways, सनाथः हि has a guardian.

Meaning

'O Sugriva, king of monkeys when you are extending due courtesy to my brother,he has a guardian in you by all means.

KK-36-14Kishkindha Kanda 36.14

यस्ते प्रभाव स्सुग्रीव यच्च ते शौचमार्जवम्। अर्हस्त्वं कपिराज्यस्य श्रियं भोक्तुमनुत्तमाम्।।4.36.14।।

yaste prabhāva ssugrīva yacca te śaucamārjavam| arhastvṃ kapirājyasya śriyṃ bhoktumanuttamām||4.36.14||

Translation

सुग्रीव Sugriva, ते your, यः whatever, प्रभावः power, आर्जवम् straightforward nature, यत् such, शौचं च purity, त्वम् your, कपिराज्यस्य of vanara kingdom, अनुत्तमाम् excellent, श्रियम् prosperity, भोक्तुम् to enjoy, अर्हः you deserve.

Meaning

'You are powerful and straightforward by nature.You are humble and noble. Therefore, you deserve the high prosperity of the kingdom of the monkeys.

KK-36-15Kishkindha Kanda 36.15

सहायेन तु सुग्रीव त्वया रामः प्रतापवान्। वधिष्यति रणे शत्रूनचिरान्नात्र संशयः।।4.36.15।।

sahāyena tu sugrīva tvayā rāmḥ pratāpavān| vadhiṣyati raṇe śatrūnacirānnātra sṃśayḥ||4.36.15||

Translation

सुग्रीव Sugriva, सहायेन with you as associate, त्वया by your, प्रतापवान् valiant hero, रामः Rama, शत्रून् enemies, रणे in war, अचिरात् shortly, वधिष्यति he will kill, संशयः is doubt, न not, अत्र in this case

Meaning

'O Sugriva with you as associate, valiant hero Rama will kill his enemies in war very soon. There is no doubt about it.

KK-36-16Kishkindha Kanda 36.16

धर्मज्ञस्य कृतज्ञस्य सङ्ग्रामेष्वनिवर्तिनः। उपपन्नं च युक्तं च सुग्रीव तव भाषितम्।।4.36.16।।

dharmajñasya kṛtajñasya saṅgrāmeṣvanivartinḥ| upapannṃ ca yuktṃ ca sugrīva tava bhāṣitam||4.36.16||

Translation

सुग्रीव Sugriva, धर्मज्ञस्य who is aware of dhrama, कृतज्ञस्य of a grateful one, सङ्ग्रामेषु in battles, अनिवर्तिनः of one who does not retreat, तव your, भाषितम् word, उपपन्नम् true, युक्तं च is fitting also.

Meaning

'O Sugriva you know dharma.You are grateful and will not turn back from the battle. So your words are true and befitting.

KK-36-17Kishkindha Kanda 36.17

दोषज्ञस्सति सामर्थ्ये कोऽन्यो भाषितुमर्हति। वर्जयित्वा मम ज्येष्ठं त्वां च वानरसत्तम।।4.36.17।।

doṣajñassati sāmarthye ko'nyo bhāṣitumarhati| varjayitvā mama jyeṣṭhṃ tvāṃ ca vānarasattama||4.36.17||

Translation

वानरसत्तम best of monkeys, मम my, ज्येष्ठम् elder brother, त्वां च and you, वर्जयित्वा with the exception of, अन्यः others, कः who, सामर्थ्ये सति capability, दोषज्ञः knows the faults of others, भाषितुम् to speak, अर्हति will be capable.

Meaning

'O best of monkeys barring you and my elder brother, who else would be capable of speaking this way about themselves even when you are aware of other's faults?

KK-36-18Kishkindha Kanda 36.18

सदृशश्चासि रामस्य विक्रमेण बलेन च। सहायो दैवतैर्दत्तश्चिराय हरिपुङ्गव।।4.36.18।।

sadṛśaścāsi rāmasya vikrameṇa balena ca| sahāyo daivatairdattaścirāya haripuṅgava||4.36.18||

Translation

हरिपुङ्गव Sugriva, दैवतैः by deities, चिराय for a long time, दत्तः given, सहायः as helper, विक्रमेण बलेन च in power and valour, रामस्य with Rama, सदृशः equal, असि you are.

Meaning

'You who are equal to Rama in valour and strength, will continue to be the gift of gods to us for long.

KK-36-19Kishkindha Kanda 36.19

किं तु शीघ्रमितो वीर निष्क्रम त्वं मया सह। सान्त्वयस्व वयस्यं च त्वं भार्याहरणकर्शितम्।।4.36.19।।

kiṃ tu śīghramito vīra niṣkrama tvṃ mayā saha| sāntvayasva vayasyṃ ca tvṃ bhāryāharaṇakarśitam||4.36.19||

Translation

किं तु nevertheless, त्वम् you, मया सह with me, इतः from this place, शीघ्रम् at once, निष्क्रम start, भार्याहरणकर्शितम् a man grieved by the abduction of his wife, वयस्य your friend, सान्त्वयस्व reassure.

Meaning

'Nevertheless I want you to proceed from here with me at once and reassure your friend who is agrieved due to the abduction of his wife.

KK-36-20Kishkindha Kanda 36.20

यच्च शोकाभिभूतस्य श्रुत्वा रामस्य भाषितम्। मया त्वं परुषाण्युक्तस्तच्चत्वं क्षन्तु मर्हसि।।4.36.20।।

yacca śokābhibhūtasya śrutvā rāmasya bhāṣitam| mayā tvṃ paruṣāṇyuktastaccatvṃ kṣantu marhasi||4.36.20||

Translation

त्वम् You, शोकाभिभूतस्य of a griefstricken man, रामस्य भाषितम् Rama's words, श्रुत्वा after hearing, मया by me, त्वम् you, परुषाणि harshly, उक्तः इति यत् thus spoken, अर्हसि you will, तच्च that, क्षन्तुम् to forgive.

Meaning

इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामयणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे षट्त्रिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the thirtysix sarga of Kishkindakanda of the Holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
