YK-45-1Yuddha Kanda 45.1

सतस्यगतिमन्विच्छन्राजपुत्रःप्रतापवान् । दिदेशातिबलोरामोदशवानरयूथपान् ।।6.45.1।।

satasyagatimanvicchanrājaputrḥpratāpavān | dideśātibalorāmodaśavānarayūthapān ||6.45.1||

Translation

राजपुत्रः king's son, प्रतापवान् powerful, अतिबलः very strong, सःरामः Rama, तस्य his, गतिम् where about, अन्विच्छन् to know, दश ten, वानरयूथपान् Vanara troops, दिदेश assigned.

Meaning

Rama, the son of the king, a powerful and strong warrior, ordered ten Vanaras to know the whereabouts (of Indrajith).

YK-45-2-3Yuddha Kanda 45.2–3 (युग्मम्)

द्वौसुषेणस्यदायादौनीलंचप्लवगर्षपम् । अङ्गदंवालिपुत्रंचशरभंचतरस्विनम् ।।6.45.2।। विनतंजाम्बवन्तंचसानुप्रस्थंमहाबलम् । ऋषभंचर्षभस्कन्थमादिदेशपरन्तपः ।।6.45.3।।

dvausuṣeṇasyadāyādaunīlṃcaplavagarṣapam | aṅgadṃvāliputrṃcaśarabhṃcatarasvinam ||6.45.2|| vinatṃjāmbavantṃcasānuprasthṃmahābalam | ṛṣabhṃcarṣabhaskanthamādideśaparantapḥ ||6.45.3||

Translation

परन्तप scorcher of enemies, सुषेणस्य to Sushena, द्वौ both, दायादौ Dwivida, प्लवगर्षपम् best of Vanaras, नीलंच and Neela, जाम्बवन्तंच and Jambavantha, अङ्गदम् Angada, तरस्विनम् courageous, शरभंच Sarabha, विनतंच Vinatha, हनूमन्तम् Hanumantha, महाबलम् mighty strong, सानुप्रस्थम् Sanuprastha, ऋषभंच and Rshabam, ऋषभस्कन्धम् Rshaba Skanda, आदिदेश ordered.

Meaning

Rama, the scorcher of enemies, ordered the two sons of Sushena, the best of Vanaras Neela, Jambavantha, Angada, as well as courageous Sarabha, Vinatha, and Hanumantha and Sanuprastha endowed with extraordinary might, also Rshaba and Rshaba Skanda.

YK-45-4Yuddha Kanda 45.4

तेसम्प्रहृष्टाहरयोभीमानुद्यम्यपादपान् । आकाशंविविशुस्सर्वेमार्गमाणादिशोदशः ।।6.45.4।।

tesamprahṛṣṭāharayobhīmānudyamyapādapān | ākāśṃviviśussarvemārgamāṇādiśodaśḥ ||6.45.4||

Translation

सर्वे all, तेहरयः those monkeys, सम्प्रहृष्टाः exceedingly delighted, भीमान् huge, मार्गमाणा searching, दिशोदशः ten directions, पादपान् held huge trees, आकाशं sky, विविशुस्सर्वे sprang.

Meaning

All those monkeys, exceedingly rejoiced, held huge trees, and went in ten directions searching and sprang to the sky.

YK-45-5Yuddha Kanda 45.5

तेषांवेगवतांवेगमिषुभिर्वेगवत्तरैः । अस्त्रवित्परमास्तैरैस्तुवारयामासरावणिः ।।6.45.5।।

teṣāṃvegavatāṃvegamiṣubhirvegavattaraiḥ | astravitparamāstairaistuvārayāmāsarāvaṇiḥ ||6.45.5||

Translation

अस्त्रवित् skilled in the use of weapons, रावणिः Ravana's son, परमास्तै: expert in mystic weapons, वेगवत्तरैः endowed with speed, इषुभिः arrows, वेगवताम् charged with energy, तेषाम् them, वेगम् swiftly, वारयामास prohibited

Meaning

Ravana's son being skilled in the use of weapons and an expert in mystic powers, he prohibited the speed of the Vanaras with his swift arrows.

YK-45-6Yuddha Kanda 45.6

तंभीममार्गमाणादिशोदशःवेगाहरयोनाराचैःक्षतविग्रहाः । अन्धकारेनददृशुर्मेघैस्सूर्यमिवावृतम् ।।6.45.6।।

tṃbhīmamārgamāṇādiśodaśḥvegāharayonārācaiḥkṣatavigrahāḥ | andhakārenadadṛśurmeghaissūryamivāvṛtam ||6.45.6||

Translation

नाराचैः iron arrows, क्षतविग्रहाः mangled, भीमवेगाः endowed with high speed, हरयः Vanaras, अन्धकारे in utter darkness, तम् him, Indrajith मेघैः cloud, आवृतम् covered, सूर्यमिव like Sun, नददृशुः not seen.

Meaning

The Vanaras were mangled with iron arrows, however endowed with high speed they could not make out Indrajith in utter darkness just as the sun covered by clouds.

YK-45-7Yuddha Kanda 45.7

रामलक्ष्मणयोरेवसर्वदेहभिदश्शरान् । भृशमावेशयामासरावणिस्समितिञ्जयः ।।6.45.7।।

rāmalakṣmaṇayorevasarvadehabhidaśśarān | bhṛśamāveśayāmāsarāvaṇissamitiñjayḥ ||6.45.7||

Translation

समितिञ्जयः ever victorious, रावणिः Indrajith, सर्वदेहभिदः all over the body, शरान् arrows, भृशम् repeatedly, रामलक्ष्मणयोरेव on Rama and Lakshmana, आवेशयामास pierced.

Meaning

Indrajith who is ever victorious, pierced repeatedly arrows all over the body of Rama and Lakshmana.

YK-45-8Yuddha Kanda 45.8

निरन्तरशीरीरौतुतावुभौरामलक्ष्मणौ । क्रुद्धेनेन्द्रजितावीरौपन्नगैश्शरतांगतैः ।।6.45.8।।

nirantaraśīrīraututāvubhaurāmalakṣmaṇau | kruddhenendrajitāvīraupannagaiśśaratāṃgataiḥ ||6.45.8||

Translation

वीरौ heroic, तौ they, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, उभौ both, क्रुद्धेन furious, इन्द्रजिता Indrajith, शरताम् with arrows, गतैः pierced, पन्नगैः serpents, निरन्तरशरीरौ all over the body

Meaning

Both Rama and Lakshmana were pierced by furious Indrajith with serpents like arrows furious.

YK-45-9Yuddha Kanda 45.9

तयोःक्षतजमार्गेणसुस्रावरुधिरंबहु । तावुभौचप्रकाशेतेपुष्पिताविवकिंशुकौ ।।6.45.9।।

tayoḥkṣatajamārgeṇasusrāvarudhirṃbahu | tāvubhaucaprakāśetepuṣpitāvivakiṃśukau ||6.45.9||

Translation

तयोः both of them, क्षतजमार्गेण wounded profusely, बहु excessively, रुधिरम् red with blood, सुस्राव flowing, तौ they, उभौ both, पुष्पितौ flowery, किंशुकौइव like Kimsuka trees, प्रकाशितौ looked bright.

Meaning

Both Rama and Lakshmana bleeding excessively, wounded profusely, looked bright and red like Kimsuka trees with flowers.

YK-45-10Yuddha Kanda 45.10

ततःपर्यन्तरक्ताक्षोभिन्नाञ्जनचयोपमः । रावणिर्भ्रातरौवाक्यमन्तर्धानगतोऽब्रवीत् ।।6.45.10।।

tatḥparyantaraktākṣobhinnāñjanacayopamḥ | rāvaṇirbhrātarauvākyamantardhānagato'bravīt ||6.45.10||

Translation

ततः then, पर्यन्तरक्ताक्षः corners of eyes turned red, भिन्नाञ्जनचयोपमः like a huge collyrium, रावणिः Ravana's son, अन्तर्धानगतः vanished, भ्रातरौ brothers, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Then Ravana's son with the corner of his eyes turned red in anger looking like a huge collyrium, vanished from there and spoke these words to the two brothers, Rama, and Lakshmana.

YK-45-11Yuddha Kanda 45.11

युध्यमानमनालक्षयंशक्रोऽपित्रिदशेश्वरः । द्रष्टुमासादितुंवापिनशक्तःकिंपुनर्युवाम् ।।6.45.11।।

yudhyamānamanālakṣayṃśakro'pitridaśeśvarḥ | draṣṭumāsādituṃvāpinaśaktḥkiṃpunaryuvām ||6.45.11||

Translation

अनालक्षयम् who has fire like eyes, युध्यमानम् while fighting war, त्रिदशेश्वरः Lord of gods, शक्रोऽपि Indra also, द्रष्टुम् to see, आसादितुंनापि cannot discern, नशक्तः not possible, युवाम् for you, किंपुनः why again

Meaning

Indrajith who had fire like eyes, said," even the ruler of gods cannot discern while I am fighting war, why speak about you? It is not possible."

YK-45-12Yuddha Kanda 45.12

प्रावृताविषुजालेनराघवौकङ्कपत्रिणा । एषरोषपरीतात्मानयामियमसादनम् ।।6.45.12।।

prāvṛtāviṣujālenarāghavaukaṅkapatriṇā | eṣaroṣaparītātmānayāmiyamasādanam ||6.45.12||

Translation

राघवौ Raghava brothers, कङ्कपत्रिणा plumes of arrows, शरजालेन by the fire of arrows, प्रावृतौ enmeshed, रोषपरीतात्मा my anger, एषः in that way, यमसादनम् to the abode of Lord of death, नयामि am about to senddispatch you.

Meaning

"Raghava brothers! You are enmeshed with plumes of arrows all over the body. My anger will not go waste. I will send you to the abode of Yama, the Lord of death."

YK-45-13Yuddha Kanda 45.13

एवमुक्त्वातुधर्मज्ञौभ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ । निर्बिभेदशितैर्बाणैःप्रजहर्षननादच ।।6.45.13।।

evamuktvātudharmajñaubhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau | nirbibhedaśitairbāṇaiḥprajaharṣananādaca ||6.45.13||

Translation

धर्मज्ञौ righteous, भ्रातरौ brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having been told, शितैः stood, बाणैः arrows, निर्बिभेद paining, प्रजहर्ष rejoiced, ननादच roaring aloud.

Meaning

Indrajith having spoken to the righteous brothers Rama and Lakshmana in that way, began to pain them with arrows and stood rejoiced roaring aloud.

YK-45-14Yuddha Kanda 45.14

भिन्नाञ्जनचयश्यामोविष्फार्यविपुलंधनुः । भूयोभूयश्शरान्घोरान् विससर्जमहामृथे ।।6.45.14।।

bhinnāñjanacayaśyāmoviṣphāryavipulṃdhanuḥ | bhūyobhūyaśśarānghorān visasarjamahāmṛthe ||6.45.14||

Translation

भिन्नाञ्जनचयश्यामः like a crushed black hill, विपुलम् huge, धनुः bow, विस्फार्यः mounting, महामृथे great conflict, भूयोभूय again and again, घोरान् terrific, शरान् arrows, विससर्ज released.

Meaning

Indrajith who was like a mass of crushed black hill, mounting the huge bow released terrific arrows again and again in that great conflict.

YK-45-15Yuddha Kanda 45.15

ततोमर्मसुमर्मज्ञोमज्जयननिशितान् शरान् । रामलक्ष्मणयोर्वीरोननदाचमुहुर्मुहुः ।।6.45.15।।

tatomarmasumarmajñomajjayananiśitān śarān | rāmalakṣmaṇayorvīronanadācamuhurmuhuḥ ||6.45.15||

Translation

मर्मज्ञः vital, वीरः warrior, ततः thereafter, रामलक्ष्मणयोः Rama and Lakshmana, मर्मसु vital parts, निशितान् sharp, शरान् arrows, मज्जयन् digging, मुहुर्मुहुः again and again, ननादच kept roaring.

Meaning

There after that warrior went on digging sharp arrows into the vital parts of Rama and Lakshmana again and again and kept roaring.

YK-45-16Yuddha Kanda 45.16

बद्धौतुशरशब्देनतावुभौरणमूर्धनि । निमेषान्तरमात्रेणनशेकतुदीक्षितुम् ।।6.45.16।।

baddhautuśaraśabdenatāvubhauraṇamūrdhani | nimeṣāntaramātreṇanaśekatudīkṣitum ||6.45.16||

Translation

रणमूर्धनि facing the battle, निमेषान्तरमात्रेण in a fraction of twinkling of an eye, बद्धौ bound, तौउभौ both of them, उदीक्षितुम् to retaliate, नशेकतुः not have energy.

Meaning

In a fraction of a second, both Rama and Lakshmana facing the battle were bound by arrows and did not have energy to retaliate.

YK-45-17-18Yuddha Kanda 45.17–18 (युग्मम्)

ततोविभिन्नसर्वाङ्गौशरशल्याचितावुभौ । ध्वजाविवमहेन्द्रस्यरज्जुमुक्तौप्रकम्पितौ ।।6.45.17।। तौसम्प्रचलितौवीरौमर्मभेदेनकर्शितौ । निपेततुर्महेष्वासौजगत्यांजगतीपती ।।6.45.18।।

tatovibhinnasarvāṅgauśaraśalyācitāvubhau | dhvajāvivamahendrasyarajjumuktauprakampitau ||6.45.17|| tausampracalitauvīraumarmabhedenakarśitau | nipetaturmaheṣvāsaujagatyāṃjagatīpatī ||6.45.18||

Translation

ततः and then, विभिन्नसर्वाङ्गौ pierced all over the body, शरशल्याचितौ with heads of arrows, कृतौ staggered, रज्जुमुक्तौ freed from their cords, प्रकम्पितौ violently, महेन्द्रस्य Indra's ध्वजाविव like banners, सम्प्रचलितौ shaking, वीरौ heroes, मर्मभेदेन in vital parts, कर्शितौ pained, महेष्वासौ gallant princes, जगतीपती Lords of the world, तौ both, जगत्याम् world, निपेततुः fell.

Meaning

Pierced all over their bodies with the heads of arrows, the gallant princes freed themselves from the cords by shaking violently like the banners of Indra. Pained by the hurting of the vital parts of both the princes, the Lords of the world fell.

YK-45-19Yuddha Kanda 45.19

तौवीरशयनेवीरौशयानौरुधिरोक्षितौ । शरवेष्टितसर्वाङ्गैवार्तौपरमपीडितौ ।।6.45.19।।

tauvīraśayanevīrauśayānaurudhirokṣitau | śaraveṣṭitasarvāṅgaivārtauparamapīḍitau ||6.45.19||

Translation

वीरशयने warrior's bed, शयानौ bed, रुधिरोक्षितौ drenched in blood, शरवेष्टितसर्वाङ्गै all their limbs covered with arrows, परमपीडितौ highly distressed, तौवीरौ those warriors, आर्तौ lying.

Meaning

The princes were lying on the warrior's bed in the battlefield, their limbs fully covered with arrows, in a highly distressed state.

YK-45-20Yuddha Kanda 45.20

नह्यविद्धंतयोर्गात्रेबभूवाङ्गुळमन्तरम् । नानिर्भिन्नंनचास्तब्दमाकराग्रादजिह्मगैः ।।6.45.20।।

nahyaviddhṃtayorgātrebabhūvāṅguळmantaram | nānirbhinnṃnacāstabdamākarāgrādajihmagaiḥ ||6.45.20||

Translation

योः their, गात्रे in the body, अविद्धम् not wounded, अङ्गुळमात्रम् not even finger breadth space (an inch of space), अन्तरम् all over, नबभूव remained without being pierced, अजिह्मगैः unhurt, आकराग्रात् not even a part of the body was left, अनिर्भिन्नम् not wounded, अस्तब्दम् unshaken, न not.

Meaning

Not an inch of space on their bodies remained without being pierced. Not even a part of the body was left unshaken, unhurt, or wounded.

YK-45-21Yuddha Kanda 45.21

तौतुक्रूरेणनिहतौरक्षसाकामरूपिणा । असृक्सुस्रुवतुस्तीव्रंजलंप्रस्रवणाविव ।।6.45.21।।

tautukrūreṇanihataurakṣasākāmarūpiṇā | asṛksusruvatustīvrṃjalṃprasravaṇāviva ||6.45.21||

Translation

क्रूरेण by the cruel, कामरूपिणा capable of acquiring desired form, रक्षसा Rakshasa, निहतौ wounded, तौ both, प्रस्रवणौ flowed, जलम् इव like water, तीव्रम् copiously, असृक् vital breaths, सुस्रुवतुः brought forth.

Meaning

Wounded by the cruel Rakshasas capable of changing form at their will, blood flowed from their body copiously like water from spring bringing out their vital life breaths.

YK-45-22Yuddha Kanda 45.22

पपातप्रथमंरामोविद्धोमर्मसुमार्गणैः । क्रोधादिन्द्रजितायेनपुराशक्रोविनिर्जितः ।।6.45.22।।

papātaprathamṃrāmoviddhomarmasumārgaṇaiḥ | krodhādindrajitāyenapurāśakrovinirjitḥ ||6.45.22||

Translation

येन by whom, पुरा earlier, शक्रः Indra, विनिर्जितः utterly defeated, इन्द्रजिता Indrajith, क्रोधात् in anger, मार्गणैः arrows, मर्मसु vital parts, विद्धः, रामः Rama, प्रधमम् first, पपात fell.

Meaning

Rama fell first pierced by arrows in his vital parts released in anger by Indrajith, by whom Indra was utterly defeated.

YK-45-23Yuddha Kanda 45.23

रुक्मपुङ्खैःप्रसन्नाग्रैरधोगतिभिराशुगैः । नाराचैरर्धनाराचैर्भल्लैरञ्जलिकैरपि ।।6.45.23।। विव्याधवत्सदन्तैश्चसिंहदंष्ट्रैःक्षुरैस्तथा ।

rukmapuṅkhaiḥprasannāgrairadhogatibhirāśugaiḥ | nārācairardhanārācairbhallairañjalikairapi ||6.45.23|| vivyādhavatsadantaiścasiṃhadṃṣṭraiḥkṣuraistathā |

Translation

रुक्मपुङ्खैः coated with gold, प्रसन्नाग्रैः pure bright tips, अधोगतिभिः descending unobstructed like dust, आशुगैः quickly, नाराचैः with even and circular heads, अर्थनाराचैः halfmoon shaped heads, भल्लैः axe like heads, अञ्जलिकैरपि heads like joined palms, वत्सदन्तैश्च heads resembling teeth of calf, सिंहदंष्ट्रैः like lion's teeth, तथा in the same way, क्षुरैः heads as sharp as a razor, विव्याध hurt.

Meaning

Indrajith pierced Rama with arrows coated with gold and gold tipped arrows, which had even and circular heads, with halfmoon arrows, with axe like heads, heads like joined palms, heads resembling teeth of calf and lion teeth arrows as well as razor sharp arrows which descended quickly unobstructed like dust.

YK-45-24Yuddha Kanda 45.24

सवीरशयनेशिश्येविज्यमादायकार्मुकम् ।।6.45.24।। भिन्नमुष्टिपरीणाहंत्रिणतंरुक्मभूषितम् ।

savīraśayaneśiśyevijyamādāyakārmukam ||6.45.24|| bhinnamuṣṭiparīṇāhṃtriṇatṃrukmabhūṣitam |

Translation

सः he, Rama, विज्यम् quitting, भिन्नमुष्टिपरीणाहम् strung and bent at both ends, three places, रुक्मभूषितम् gold plated, कार्मुकम् bow, आदाय holding, वीरशयने hero's bed, शिश्ये relaxed.

Meaning

Rama lay relaxed on the hero's bed quitting his goldplated bow strung and bent at both ends, and the middle.

YK-45-25Yuddha Kanda 45.25

बाणपातान्तरेरामंपतितंपुरुषर्षभम् ।।6.45.25।। सतत्रलक्ष्मणोदृष्टवानिराशोजीवितेऽभवत् ।

bāṇapātāntarerāmṃpatitṃpuruṣarṣabham ||6.45.25|| satatralakṣmaṇodṛṣṭavānirāśojīvite'bhavat |

Translation

लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, तत्र there, बाणपातान्तरे at an arrow's throw, पतितम् fallen, पुरुषर्षभम् best of men, दृष्टवा beholding, जीविते life, निराशः disappointed, अभवत् remained.

Meaning

Lakshmana remained beholding the best of men fallen at an arrow's throw disappointed at his life.

YK-45-26Yuddha Kanda 45.26

रामंकमलपत्राक्षंशरबन्धपरिक्षतम् ।।6.45.26।। शुशोचभ्रातरंदृष्टवापतितंधरणीतले ।

rāmṃkamalapatrākṣṃśarabandhaparikṣatam ||6.45.26|| śuśocabhrātarṃdṛṣṭavāpatitṃdharaṇītale |

Translation

कमलपत्राक्षम् lotus petal eyed, भ्रातरम् brother, रामम् at Rama, शरबन्धपरिक्षतम् pained by pierced arrows, धरणीतले on the ground, पतितम् fallen, दृष्टवा seeing, शुशोच grieved.

Meaning

Lakshmana grieved seeing his elder brother Rama pierced by arrows, pained, and fallen on the ground.

YK-45-27Yuddha Kanda 45.27

हरयश्चापितंदृष्टवासन्तापंपरमंगताः ।।6.45.27।। शोकार्ताश्चुक्रशुर्घोरमश्रुपूरितलोचनाः ।

harayaścāpitṃdṛṣṭavāsantāpṃparamṃgatāḥ ||6.45.27|| śokārtāścukraśurghoramaśrupūritalocanāḥ |

Translation

हरयश्चापि even the monkeys, तम् him, दृष्टवा beholding, परमम् very, सन्तापम् much stricken, गताः fallen, शोकार्ताः in agony, अश्रुपूरियलोचनाः their eyes filled with tears, घोरम् terrible, चुक्रुशुः shrieked.

Meaning

Even the monkeys' eyes were filled with tears, very much stricken with grief seeing Rama fallen and shrieked.

YK-45-28Yuddha Kanda 45.28

बद्धौतुवीरौपतितौशयानौतेवानरास्सम्परिवार्यतस्थुः । समागतावायुसुतप्रमुख्याविषादमार्ताःपरमंचजग्मुः ।।6.45.28।।

baddhautuvīraupatitauśayānautevānarāssamparivāryatasthuḥ | samāgatāvāyusutapramukhyāviṣādamārtāḥparamṃcajagmuḥ ||6.45.28||

Translation

वायुसुतप्रमुख्याः wind god's son's army, तेवानराः the Vanaras, समागताः collected together, बद्धौ bound, वीरौपतितौ fallen heroes, शयानौ lying, तौ both, सम्परिवार्य surrounding, तस्थुः stood, आर्ताः despondent, परमम् extremely, विषादम् sorrow, जग्मुःच remained.

Meaning

Hanuman's army of Vanaras collected together stood surrounding fallen princes lying on the ground, despondent and extremely sorrowful. ।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेपञ्चचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः ।। This is the end of the forty fifth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
