YK-46-1Yuddha Kanda 46.1

ततोद्यांपृथिवींचैववीक्षमाणावनौकसः । ददृशुःसन्ततौबाणैर्भ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।।6.46.1।।

tatodyāṃpṛthivīṃcaivavīkṣamāṇāvanaukasḥ | dadṛśuḥsantataubāṇairbhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau ||6.46.1||

Translation

ततः thereafter, द्याम् at the sky, पृथिवींचैव on the ground, वीक्षमाणा seeing, वनौकसः Vanara leaders, बाणैः arrows, सन्ततौ, भ्रातरौ brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, ददृशुः saw.

Meaning

Thereafter looking at the sky and the ground for Rama and Lakshmana, the Vanara leaders saw the two brothers, lying on the ground hurt by arrows.

YK-46-2Yuddha Kanda 46.2

वृष्टवेवोपरतेदेवेकृतकर्मणिराक्षसे । आजगामाथतंदेशंससुग्रीवोविभीषणः ।।6.46.2।।

vṛṣṭavevoparatedevekṛtakarmaṇirākṣase | ājagāmāthatṃdeśṃsasugrīvovibhīṣaṇḥ ||6.46.2||

Translation

देवे cloud, वृष्टवेव after raining, राक्षसे Rakshasa, कृतकर्मणि having completed the task, उपरते retired, अथ and then, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, ससुग्रीवः Sugriva, तंदेशम् that location, आजगाम reached.

Meaning

Indrajith retired after completing the task, like a cloud that retires after raining. Then came Vibheeshana and Sugriva to that location.

YK-46-3Yuddha Kanda 46.3

नीलद्विविदमैन्दाश्चसुषेणःकुमुदाङ्गदा: । तूर्णंहनुमतासार्धमन्वशोचन्तराघवौ ।।6.46.3।।

nīladvividamaindāścasuṣeṇḥkumudāṅgadā: | tūrṇṃhanumatāsārdhamanvaśocantarāghavau ||6.46.3||

Translation

नीलश्च Neela and, द्विविदः Dwivida, मैन्दः Mainda, सुषेणः Sushena, कुमुदः Kumuda, अङ्गदा: Angada, हनुमतासार्धम् accompanied by Hanuman, तूर्णम् intensely, राघवौ Ragahavas, अन्वशोचन्त grieved looking at.

Meaning

Neela, Dwivida, Mainda, Sushena, Kumuda, Angada accompanied by Hanuman grieved intensely on looking at the Raghavas.

YK-46-4-7Yuddha Kanda 46.4–7 (कलापकम्)

अचेष्टौमन्दनिश्श्वासौशोणितौघपरिप्लुतौ । शरजालाचितौस्तब्दौशयानौशरतल्पयोः ।।6.46.4।। निःश्वसन्तौयथासर्पौनिश्चेष्टौमन्दविक्रमौ । रुधिरस्राद्विग्धाङ्गौतापनीयाविवध्वजौ ।।6.46.5।। तौवीरशयनेवीरौशयानौमन्दचेष्टितौ । यूथपैस्तै: परिवृतौबाष्पव्याकुललोचनैः ।।6.46.6।। राघवौपतितौदृष्टवाशरजालसमावृतौ । बभूवुर्वेर्व्यथितास्सर्वेवानरास्सविभीषणाः ।।6.46.7।।

aceṣṭaumandaniśśvāsauśoṇitaughapariplutau | śarajālācitaustabdauśayānauśaratalpayoḥ ||6.46.4|| niḥśvasantauyathāsarpauniśceṣṭaumandavikramau | rudhirasrādvigdhāṅgautāpanīyāvivadhvajau ||6.46.5|| tauvīraśayanevīrauśayānaumandaceṣṭitau | yūthapaistai: parivṛtaubāṣpavyākulalocanaiḥ ||6.46.6|| rāghavaupatitaudṛṣṭavāśarajālasamāvṛtau | babhūvurvervyathitāssarvevānarāssavibhīṣaṇāḥ ||6.46.7||

Translation

अचेष्टौ unable to move, मन्दनिश्श्वासौ with feeble breath, शोणितौघ drenched in blood, परिप्लुतौ covered all over, शरजालाचितौ with arrows, स्तब्दौ motionless, शयानौ on bed, शरतल्पयोः of arrows, सर्पौयथा like serpents, निश्श्वसन्तौ feeble breath, निश्चेष्टौ stunned, मन्दचेष्टितौ inactive, रुधिरस्राद्विग्धाङ्गौ drenched in blood, तापनीयौ distressed, ध्वजौइव like posts, वीरशयने heroic bed, शयानौ lying, वीरौ heroes, मन्दविक्रमौ prowess reduced, बाष्पव्याकुललोचनैः eyes filled with tears, स्सैः breath, यूथपैः army, परिवृतौ surrounded by, शरजालसमावृतौ network of arrows, तौराघवौ both the scions, दृष्टवा seeing, सविभीषणाः Vibheeshana, सर्वे all, वानराः Vanara, व्यथिताः worried, बभूवुः appeared.

Meaning

Unable to move, with feeble breath, drenched in blood and the body covered all over with arrows, lying on a bed of arrows, stunned, with reduced prowess, sighing like serpents, the heroes, Rama, and Lakshmana, who were like golden posts became dull. Rama and Lakshmana were lying on a heroic bed, arrows stuck to the bodies. Vibheeshana and all the Vanaras kept seeing both the scions and wept surrounding them.

YK-46-8Yuddha Kanda 46.8

अन्तरिक्षंनिरीक्षन्तोदिशस्सर्वाश्चवानराः । नचैनंमाययाछन्नंददृशूरावणिःरणे ।।6.46.8।।

antarikṣṃnirīkṣantodiśassarvāścavānarāḥ | nacainṃmāyayāchannṃdadṛśūrāvaṇiḥraṇe ||6.46.8||

Translation

अन्तरिक्षम् sky, सर्वाः all over, दिशश्च directions, निरीक्षन्तः looking, वानराः Vanaras, रणे battle, मायया mystical power, चैनं not find, छन्नम् searched, एनम् all over, रावणिम् Indrajith, ददृशुः could not see.

Meaning

Though the Vanaras searched all over the battlefield and in all directions of the sky, they could not see Indrajith of mystical powers.

YK-46-9Yuddha Kanda 46.9

तंतुमायाप्रतिच्छन्नंमाययैवविभीषणः । वीक्षमाणोददर्शाथभ्रातुःपुत्रमवस्थितम् ।।6.46.9।।

tṃtumāyāpraticchannṃmāyayaivavibhīṣaṇḥ | vīkṣamāṇodadarśāthabhrātuḥputramavasthitam ||6.46.9||

Translation

विभीषणः Vibheeshana, माययैव occult, वीक्षमाणः started looking, मायाप्रतिच्छन्नम् searched with occult powers, अथ and then, अवस्थितम् stood, तम् his, भ्रातुःपुत्रम् brother's son, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Vibheeshana started looking with occult powers for his brother's son endowed with occult power following occult means and found Indrajith.

YK-46-10Yuddha Kanda 46.10

तमप्रतिकर्माणमप्रतिद्वन्द्वमाहवे । ददर्शान्तर्हितंवीरंवरदानाद्विभीषणः ।।6.46.10।। तेजसायशसाचैवविक्रमेणचसम्युतम् ।

tamapratikarmāṇamapratidvandvamāhave | dadarśāntarhitṃvīrṃvaradānādvibhīṣaṇḥ ||6.46.10|| tejasāyaśasācaivavikrameṇacasamyutam |

Translation

तेजसा brilliant, यशसाचैव glory, विक्रमेणच capable of difficult deeds, सम्युतम् endowed with, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, अप्रतिमकर्माणम् incomparable in his task, आहवे in fight, अप्रतिद्वन्दम् unrivalled in battle, वरदानात् by virtue of a boon, अन्तर्हितम् hidden, तम् him, वीरम् hero, ददर्श seen.

Meaning

Brilliant and glorious Vibheeshana, capable of difficult deeds, incomparable at work, and in fight, unrivalled in battle, saw the hidden hero Indrajith by virtue of a boon (from Brahma).

YK-46-11Yuddha Kanda 46.11

इन्द्रजित्त्वात्मनःकर्मतौशयानौसमीक्ष्यच ।।6.46.11।। उवाचपरमप्रीतोहर्षयन् सर्वनैरृतान् ।

indrajittvātmanḥkarmatauśayānausamīkṣyaca ||6.46.11|| uvācaparamaprītoharṣayan sarvanairṛtān |

Translation

इन्द्रजित्तु Indrajith, आत्मनः himself, कर्म action, शयानौ on the bed, तौच both, समीक्ष्य reviewing, परमप्रीतः very happily, सर्वनैरृतान् to all Rakshasas, हर्षयन् making to rejoice, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

Reviewing the scions lying on bed by his action, Indrajith caused extreme joy to all Rakshasas and spoke.

YK-46-12Yuddha Kanda 46.12

दूषणस्यचहन्तारौखरस्यचमहाबलौ ।।6.46.12।। सादितौमामकैर्बाणैर्भ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।

dūṣaṇasyacahantāraukharasyacamahābalau ||6.46.12|| sāditaumāmakairbāṇairbhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau |

Translation

दूषणस्यच Dushana, खरस्यच and Khara, हन्तारौ slayer, महाबलौ very strong, भ्रातरौ brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, मामकैः by my, बाणैः arrows, सादितौ struck.

Meaning

"The two brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, who slayed Dushana and Khara have been struck."

YK-46-13Yuddha Kanda 46.13

नेमौमोक्षयितुंशक्यावेतस्मादिषुबन्धनात् ।।6.46.13।। सर्वैरपिसमागम्यसर्षिसङ्घैस्सुरासुरैः ।

nemaumokṣayituṃśakyāvetasmādiṣubandhanāt ||6.46.13|| sarvairapisamāgamyasarṣisaṅghaissurāsuraiḥ |

Translation

सर्वैः all, सर्षिसङ्घैः sages, सुरासुरैः Devatas and Rakshasas, समागम्य collected together, इमौ this, एतस्मात् by them, इषुबन्धनात् to rid of this network, मोक्षयितुम् liberate, नशक्यौ not possible.

Meaning

"Even if all the sages, Devatas and Rakshasas collected together come, they cannot get liberated from this bondage of arrows."

YK-46-14-15Yuddha Kanda 46.14–15 (युग्मम्)

यत्कृतेचिन्तयानस्यशोकार्तस्यपितुर्मम ।।6.46.14।। अस्पृष्टवाशयनंगात्रैस्त्रियामायातिशर्वरी । त्स्नेयंयत्कृतेलङ्कानदीवर्षास्विवाकुला ।।6.46.15।। सोऽयंमूलहरोऽनर्थःसर्वेषांनिहतोमया ।

yatkṛtecintayānasyaśokārtasyapiturmama ||6.46.14|| aspṛṣṭavāśayanṃgātraistriyāmāyātiśarvarī | tsneyṃyatkṛtelaṅkānadīvarṣāsvivākulā ||6.46.15|| so'yṃmūlaharo'narthḥsarveṣāṃnihatomayā |

Translation

यत्कृकते on whose account, चिन्तयानस्य with this thought, शोकार्तस्य is in grief, ममपितुः my father, गात्रैः body, शयनम् bed, अस्पृष्टवा not understood clearly, त्रियामा three periods, शर्वरी night, याति passed away, यत्कृते by what action, कृत्स्ना dark, इयंलङ्का this Lanka, वर्षासु raining, नदीइव like river, आकुला agitated, सः he, अयम् all, सर्वेषाम् all of us, मूलहरः root cause, अनर्थः got rid of, मया by me, निहतः killed.

Meaning

"On whose account my father was in grief and spent all night and passed the three parts of the night (without sleep) and why he was unable to sleep was not understood clearly. By his (Rama's) action this Lanka is agitated like a river during the rainy season. He, who is the root cause of this calamity, has been got rid of by me," thought Indrajith.

YK-46-16Yuddha Kanda 46.16

रामस्यलक्ष्मणस्यैवसर्वेषांचवनौकसाम् । विक्रमानिष्फलाःसर्वेयथाशरदितोयदाः ।।6.46.16।।

rāmasyalakṣmaṇasyaivasarveṣāṃcavanaukasām | vikramāniṣphalāḥsarveyathāśaraditoyadāḥ ||6.46.16||

Translation

रामस्य Rama's, लक्ष्मणस्यैव and even Lakshmana's, सर्वेषाम् everything, वनौकसाम् Vanaras, सर्वे all, विक्रमाः valiant, शरदि autumn, तोयदाःइव like clouds, निष्फलाः wasted.

Meaning

"Rama, and Lakshmana and even all valiant Vanaras have been got rid of just like clouds of autumn are wasted."

YK-46-17Yuddha Kanda 46.17

एवमुक्त्वातुतान् सर्वान्राक्षसान्परिपार्श्वतः ।।6.46.17।। यूथपानपितान्सर्वांस्ताडयामासरावणिः ।

evamuktvātutān sarvānrākṣasānparipārśvatḥ ||6.46.17|| yūthapānapitānsarvāṃstāḍayāmāsarāvaṇiḥ |

Translation

सःरावणिः that Indrajith, तान् his, सर्वान् all, राक्षसान् Rakshasas, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having spoken, परिपार्श्वतः those looking at him, सर्वान् all, यूथपानपि army generals, ताडयामास began to strike.

Meaning

Indrajith, having spoken in that way to all Rakshasas, began to strike all the Vanara leaders looking at him.

YK-46-18Yuddha Kanda 46.18

नीलंनवभिराहत्यमैन्दंचद्विविदंतथा ।।6.46.18।। त्रिभिस्त्रिभिरमित्रघ्नस्ततापप्रवरेषुभिः ।

nīlṃnavabhirāhatyamaindṃcadvividṃtathā ||6.46.18|| tribhistribhiramitraghnastatāpapravareṣubhiḥ |

Translation

अमित्रघ्नः slayer of enemies, च and, नीलम् Neela, नवभिः nine shafts, आहत्य attacking, मैन्दम् Mainda, तथा so also, द्विविदम् Dwivida, त्रिभिःत्रिभिः three and three, प्रवरेषुभिः sharp edged shafts, तताप attacked.

Meaning

The slayer of enemies, Indrajith attacked Neela with nine shafts, so also Mainda and Dwivida with three separate sharpedged shafts.

YK-46-19Yuddha Kanda 46.19

जाम्बवन्तंमहेष्वासोविद् ध्वाबाणेनवक्षसि ।।6.46.19।। हनूमतोवेगवतोविससर्जशरान्दश ।

jāmbavantṃmaheṣvāsovid dhvābāṇenavakṣasi ||6.46.19|| hanūmatovegavatovisasarjaśarāndaśa |

Translation

महेष्वासः endowed with great bow, जाम्बवन्तम् Jambavantha, वक्षसि in the chest, बाणेन with shafts, विद् ध्वा pierced, वेगवतः endowed with speed in war, हनूमतः Hanuman, दश ten, शरान् arrows, विससर्ज released.

Meaning

Indrajith endowed with great bow pierced Jambavan in his chest, and released ten arrows at Hanuman, endowed with speed in war.

YK-46-20Yuddha Kanda 46.20

गवाक्षंशरभंचैवद्वावप्यमिततेजसौ ।।6.46.20।। द्वाभ्यांद्वाभ्यांमहावेगोविव्याधयुधिरावणिः ।

gavākṣṃśarabhṃcaivadvāvapyamitatejasau ||6.46.20|| dvābhyāṃdvābhyāṃmahāvegovivyādhayudhirāvaṇiḥ |

Translation

महावेगः endowed with speed, रावणिः Indrajith, युधि in war, अमिततेजसौ highly energetic, तौ both, गवाक्षम् Gavaksha, शरभंचैव Sarabha, द्वाभ्यांद्वाभ्याम् two and two, विव्याध attacked.

Meaning

Indrajith endowed with speed in war, attacked highly energetic Gavaksha and Sarabha with two arrows each.

YK-46-21Yuddha Kanda 46.21

गोलाङ्गूलेश्वरंचैववालिपुत्रमथाङ्गदम् ।।6.46.21।। विव्याधबहुभिर्बाणैस्त्वरमाणोऽथरावणिः ।

golāṅgūleśvarṃcaivavāliputramathāṅgadam ||6.46.21|| vivyādhabahubhirbāṇaistvaramāṇo'tharāvaṇiḥ |

Translation

अथ and then, रावणिः Ravana's son, त्वरमाणः swiftly, गोलाङ्गूलेश्वरम् ruler of Golangulas, अथ and then, वालिपुत्रम् Vali's son, अङ्गदम् Angada, बहुभिः many, बाणैः arrows, विव्याद pierced.

Meaning

Thereafter Indrajith attacked the ruler of Golangulas, and Vali's son Angada with many arrows.

YK-46-22Yuddha Kanda 46.22

तान्वानरवरान्भित्त्वाशरैरग्निशिखोपमैः ।।6.46.22।। ननादबलवांस्तत्रमहासत्त्वस्सरावणिः ।

tānvānaravarānbhittvāśarairagniśikhopamaiḥ ||6.46.22|| nanādabalavāṃstatramahāsattvassarāvaṇiḥ |

Translation

बलवान् mighty, महासत्त्व: strong, सःरावणिः that son of Ravana, तत्र there, अग्निशिखोपमैः like flames of fire, शरैः shafts, तान् himself, वानरवरान् best of monkeys, भित्त्वा attacked, ननाद and roared.

Meaning

Mighty son of Ravana, then attacked the best of monkeys with arrows which were like flames of fire.

YK-46-23Yuddha Kanda 46.23

तानर्धयित्वाबाणौघैस्त्रासयित्वाचवानरान् ।।6.46.23।। प्रजहासमहाबाहुर्वचनंचेदमब्रवीत् ।

tānardhayitvābāṇaughaistrāsayitvācavānarān ||6.46.23|| prajahāsamahābāhurvacanṃcedamabravīt |

Translation

तान् Indrajith, बाणौघैः hails of arrows, अर्धयित्वा struck, वानरान् Vanaras, त्रासयित्वाच terrifying, महाबाहुः of strong arms, प्रजहास laughing, इदम् these, वचनंच words, अब्रवीत् spoken.

Meaning

Indrajith hurt the Vanaras with hails of arrows terrifying them. Then the mighty armed son of Ravana laughed and spoke these words.

YK-46-24Yuddha Kanda 46.24

शरशब्देनघोरेणमयाबद्धौचमूमुखे ।।6.46.24।। सहितौभ्रातरवेतौनिशामयतराक्षसाः ।

śaraśabdenaghoreṇamayābaddhaucamūmukhe ||6.46.24|| sahitaubhrātaravetauniśāmayatarākṣasāḥ |

Translation

राक्षसाः Rakshasas, घोरेण terrible, शरबन्धेन bound by arrows, चमूमुखे in the forefront, मया by me, बद्धौ bound, सहितौ together, एतौभ्रातरौ these two brothers, निशामयत fallen.

Meaning

"O Rakshasas! Look at these two brothers together bound by my fierce arrows in front of you."

YK-46-25Yuddha Kanda 46.25

एवमुक्तास्तुतेसर्वेराक्षसाःकूटयोधिनः ।।6.46.25।। परंविस्मयामाजग्मुःकर्मणातेनहर्षिताः ।

evamuktāstutesarverākṣasāḥkūṭayodhinḥ ||6.46.25|| parṃvismayāmājagmuḥkarmaṇātenaharṣitāḥ |

Translation

एवम् in that way, उक्ताः having said, कूटयोधिनः cheerful, ते they, सर्वेराक्षसाः all Rakshasas, तेनकर्मणा by that action, परम् extremely, विस्मयम् amazed, आजग्मुः went, हर्षिताः laughing.

Meaning

Indrajith having spoken in that way to the Rakshasas, all of them were highly amazed by the action of Indrajith and went laughing.

YK-46-26Yuddha Kanda 46.26

विनेदुश्चमहानादान् सर्वेतेजलदोपमाः ।।6.46.26।। हतोरामइतिज्ञात्वारावणिंसमपूजयन् ।

vineduścamahānādān sarvetejaladopamāḥ ||6.46.26|| hatorāmaitijñātvārāvaṇiṃsamapūjayan |

Translation

जलदोपमाः like clouds, तेसर्वे all of them, महानादान् roaring aloud, विनेदुः joyfully, रामः Rama, हतःइति is killed, ज्ञात्वा thinking, रावणिम् Son of Ravana, समपूजयन् offered prayers.

Meaning

The Rakshasas thundering like rain clouds, roaring aloud thinking 'Rama is killed' by Ravana's son offered prayers.

YK-46-27Yuddha Kanda 46.27

निष्पन्दौतुतदादृष्टवाभ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।।6.46.27।। वसुधायांनिरुच्छवासौहतावित्यन्वमन्यत ।

niṣpandaututadādṛṣṭavābhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau ||6.46.27|| vasudhāyāṃnirucchavāsauhatāvityanvamanyata |

Translation

तदा thereafter, निष्पन्दौ not responding, निरुच्छवासौ without breathing, भ्रातरौ brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, वसुधायाम् on the ground, दृष्टवा having seen, हताविति dead, अन्वमन्यत thought.

Meaning

Thereafter having seen the two brothers Rama and Lakshmana not responding or breathing, lying on the ground, he thought they were dead.

YK-46-28Yuddha Kanda 46.28

हर्षेणतुसमाविष्टइन्द्रजित्समितिञ्जयः ।।6.46.28।। प्रविवेशपुरींलङ्कांहर्षयन् सर्वनैर्वृतान् ।

harṣeṇatusamāviṣṭaindrajitsamitiñjayḥ ||6.46.28|| praviveśapurīṃlaṅkāṃharṣayan sarvanairvṛtān |

Translation

समितिञ्जयः one who is victorious in battles, इन्द्रजित् Indrajith, हर्षेण felt happy, समाविष्टः collected there, सर्वनैर्वतान् for all Rakshasas, हर्षयन् creating happiness, लङ्कांपुरीम् Lanka city, प्रविवेश entered

Meaning

Indrajith, who is victorious in battles, feeling happy and creating happiness to all Rakshasas collected there entered the city of Lanka.

YK-46-29-32Yuddha Kanda 46.29–32 (कलापकम्)

रामलक्ष्मणयोर्दृष्टवाशरीरेसायकैश्चिते ।।6.46.29।। सर्वाणिचाङ्गोपाङ्गानिसुग्रीवंभयमाविशत् ।

rāmalakṣmaṇayordṛṣṭavāśarīresāyakaiścite ||6.46.29|| sarvāṇicāṅgopāṅgānisugrīvṃbhayamāviśat |

Translation

रामलक्ष्मणयोः Rama and Lakshmana, सायकैः by arrows, चिते riddled with, शरीरे body, सर्वाणि all over, अङ्गोपाङ्गानि from head to foot, दृष्टवा seeing, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, भयम् feared, आविशत् possessed.

Meaning

Sugriva was overtaken by fear on seeing Rama and Lakshmana riddled with arrows from head to foot all over the body

YK-46-33Yuddha Kanda 46.33

पर्यवस्थापयात्मानमनाथंमांचवानर ।।6.46.33।। सत्यधर्माभिरक्तानांनास्तिमृत्युकृतंभयम् ।

paryavasthāpayātmānamanāthṃmāṃcavānara ||6.46.33|| satyadharmābhiraktānāṃnāstimṛtyukṛtṃbhayam |

Translation

वानर Vanara, आत्मानम् our self, अनाथम् helpless, मांच and mine, पर्यमास्थापय restoring, सत्यधर्मानिरक्तानाम् for those following righteousness and truthfulness, मृत्युकृतम् from death, भयम् fear, नास्ति not.

Meaning

"O Vanara! We are helpless, be confident, for those following righteousness and truthfulness there is no fear of death."

YK-46-34Yuddha Kanda 46.34

एवमुक्त्वाततस्तस्यजलक्लन्नेनपाणिना ।।6.46.34।। सुग्रीवस्यशुभेनेत्रेप्रममार्जविभीषणः ।

evamuktvātatastasyajalaklannenapāṇinā ||6.46.34|| sugrīvasyaśubhenetrepramamārjavibhīṣaṇḥ |

Translation

Translation

ततः thereafter, धर्मात्मा dutiful, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, सलिलम् water, आदाय taking, विद्यया as per tradition, परिजस्यच chanting sacred text to consecrate, सुग्रीवनेत्रे Sugriva's eyes, सममार्ज wiped.

Meaning

Thereafter the dutiful Vibheeshana taking water as per tradition consecrated chanting sacred text and wiped Sugriva's eyes.

YK-46-36Yuddha Kanda 46.36

विमृज्यवदनंतस्यकपिराजस्यधीमतः ।।6.46.36।। अब्रवीत्कालसम्प्राप्तसम्भ्रान्तमिदंवचः ।

vimṛjyavadanṃtasyakapirājasyadhīmatḥ ||6.46.36|| abravītkālasamprāptasambhrāntamidṃvacḥ |

Translation

धीमतः wise, तस्यकपिराजस्य that monkey king, वदनम् countenance, विमृज्य wiped clean, कालसम्प्राप्तम् as per that time, असम्भ्रान्तम् opportune, इदंवचः these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Wise Vibheeshana having wiped Sugriva's face clean in accordance with time addressed with opportune words.

YK-46-37Yuddha Kanda 46.37

नकालःकपिराजेन्द्रवैक्लब्यमवलम्बितुम् ।।6.46.37।। अतिस्नेहोऽप्यकालेऽस्मिन्मरणायोपकल्पते ।

nakālḥkapirājendravaiklabyamavalambitum ||6.46.37|| atisneho'pyakāle'sminmaraṇāyopakalpate |

Translation

कपिराजेन्द्र monkey king, वैक्लब्यम् faint heartedness, अवलम्बितुम् to follow, कालः time, न not this, अस्मिन् our, काले time, अतिस्नेहोऽप्य with extreme attachment, मरणाय death, उपकल्पते lead.

Meaning

"O king of monkeys! This is not the time for faint heartedness. Extreme attachment at this time will lead us to death."

YK-46-38Yuddha Kanda 46.38

तस्मादुत्सृज्यवैक्लब्यंसर्वकार्यविनाशनम् ।।6.46.38।। हितंरामपुरोगणांसैन्यानानुचिन्त्यताम् ।

tasmādutsṛjyavaiklabyṃsarvakāryavināśanam ||6.46.38|| hitṃrāmapurogaṇāṃsainyānānucintyatām |

Translation

तस्मात् therefore, सर्वकार्यविनाशनम् all actions will be destroyed, वैक्लब्यम् faintheartedness, उत्सृज्य give up, रामपुरोगणाम् following Rama, सैन्यानाम् army, हितम् welfare, अनुचिन्त्यताम् think of.

Meaning

"Therefore, give up faintheartedness as all actions will be destroyed by that. Following Rama's leadership, think of the army's welfare."

YK-46-39Yuddha Kanda 46.39

अथवारक्ष्यतांरामोयावत्संज्ञाविपर्ययः ।।6.46.39।। लब्धसंज्ञौहिकाकुत्स्थौभयंनौव्यपनेष्यतः ।

athavārakṣyatāṃrāmoyāvatsṃjñāviparyayḥ ||6.46.39|| labdhasṃjñauhikākutsthaubhayṃnauvyapaneṣyatḥ |

Translation

अथवा or else, यावत्संज्ञाविपर्ययः till they become conscious, रामः Rama, रक्ष्यताम् protect, लब्धसंज्ञौ when they get back consciousness, काकुत्स्थौ both Kakuthsa princes, नौ, भयम् fear, व्यपनेष्यतःहि will be able to get rid off.

Meaning

"Or else till they become conscious, protect the Kakuthsa princes. When they become conscious, they can get rid of our fear."

YK-46-40Yuddha Kanda 46.40

नैतत्किञ्चनरामस्यनचरामोमुमूर्षति ।।6.46.40।। नह्येनंहास्यतेलक्ष्मीद्दुर्लभायागतायुषाम् ।

naitatkiñcanarāmasyanacarāmomumūrṣati ||6.46.40|| nahyenṃhāsyatelakṣmīddurlabhāyāgatāyuṣām |

Translation

एतत् therefore, रामस्य Rama's, किञ्चन even a little, न not, रामः Rama, नमुमूर्षति not going to die, या whatever, गतायुषाम् life is lost, दुर्लभा difficult, लक्ष्मीः prosperous, एनम् , नहास्यतेहि not leave him.

Meaning

"Therefore, Rama has no fear of death, even a little. Whatever splendour is lost, prosperity will not leave him."

YK-46-41Yuddha Kanda 46.41

तस्मादाश्वासयात्मानंबलंचाश्वासयस्वकम् ।।6.46.41।। यावत्कार्याणिसर्वाणिपुनःसंस्थापयाम्यहम् ।

tasmādāśvāsayātmānṃbalṃcāśvāsayasvakam ||6.46.41|| yāvatkāryāṇisarvāṇipunḥsṃsthāpayāmyaham |

Translation

तस्मात् therefore, आत्मानम् ourselves, आश्वासय restoring breath, स्वकम् myself, बलम् army, आश्वासय reassure, अहम् I, सर्वाणि all, कार्यानि actions, पुनः again, यावत् संस्थापयामि all the army restore confidence.

Meaning

"Therefore, restoring breath let us reassure the army again till all actions are carried out by restoring their confidence."

YK-46-42Yuddha Kanda 46.42

एतेहिफुल्लनयनास्त्रासादागतसाध्वसाः ।।6.46.42।। कर्णेकर्णेप्रकथिताहरयोहरिसत्तम ।

etehiphullanayanāstrāsādāgatasādhvasāḥ ||6.46.42|| karṇekarṇeprakathitāharayoharisattama |

Translation

हरिसत्तम monkey leader, एते these, हरयः monkeys, फुल्लनयनाः dilated eyes, त्रासात् by fear, आगतसाध्वसाः seized with fear, कर्णेकर्णे ear to ear, प्रकथिताः talking to each other.

Meaning

"O Monkey leader! these monkeys whose eyes have become big (are dilated) with fear are talking ear to ear (about Rama)."

YK-46-43Yuddha Kanda 46.43

मांतुदृष्टवाप्रधावन्तमनीकंसम्प्रहर्षितुम् ।।6.46.43।। त्यजस्तुहरयस्त्रासंभुक्तपूर्वामिवस्रजम् ।

māṃtudṛṣṭavāpradhāvantamanīkṃsampraharṣitum ||6.46.43|| tyajastuharayastrāsṃbhuktapūrvāmivasrajam |

Translation

अनीकम् army forces, सम्प्रहर्षितुम् made them happy, प्रधावन्तम् inherent, माम् me, दृष्टवा seeing, हरयः monkeys, त्रासम् moving in fear, भुक्तपूर्वम् enjoyed earlier, स्रजम् garland of flowers, इव like that, त्यजन्तु discard.

Meaning

"Let the army forces of monkeys be happy seeing me moving, getting rid of the inherent fear in them just as they discard a garland of flowers enjoyed by them earlier."

YK-46-44Yuddha Kanda 46.44

समाश्वास्यतुसुग्रीवंराक्षसेन्द्रोविभीषणः ।।6.46.44।। विद्रुतंवानरानीकंतत्समाश्वासयत्पुनः ।

samāśvāsyatusugrīvṃrākṣasendrovibhīṣaṇḥ ||6.46.44|| vidrutṃvānarānīkṃtatsamāśvāsayatpunḥ |

Translation

राक्षसेन्द्रः king of Rakshasas, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, समाश्वास्य assured, विद्रुतम् knowing, तत् वानरानीकम् that Vanara army, पुनः again, समाश्वासयत् reassured.

Meaning

The king of Rakshasas, Vibheeshana having assured Sugriva, knowing the Vanara army he reassured them.

YK-46-45Yuddha Kanda 46.45

इन्द्रजित्तुमहामायःसर्वसैन्यसमावृतः ।।6.46.45।। विवेशनगरींलङ्कांपितरंचाभ्युपागमत् ।

indrajittumahāmāyḥsarvasainyasamāvṛtḥ ||6.46.45|| viveśanagarīṃlaṅkāṃpitarṃcābhyupāgamat |

Translation

महामायः great, इन्द्रजित्तुः Indrajith, सर्वसैन्यसमावृतः all the army surrounding him, लङ्कां Lanka नगरीम् City, विवेश entered, पितरम् father, अभ्युपागमत् च approached.

Meaning

Great Indrajith surrounded by all army entered the city of Lanka and approached his father.

YK-46-46Yuddha Kanda 46.46

तत्ररावणमासाद्यअभिवाद्यकृताञ्जलिः ।।6.46.46।। आचचक्षेप्रियंपित्रेनिहतौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।

tatrarāvaṇamāsādyaabhivādyakṛtāñjaliḥ ||6.46.46|| ācacakṣepriyṃpitrenihataurāmalakṣmaṇau |

Translation

तत्र there, रावणम् Ravana, आसाद्य having reached, अभिवाद्य greeted, कृताञ्जलिः with folded palms, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, निहतौ are killed, पित्रे O father, प्रियम् dear, आचचक्षे broke the news.

Meaning

Having reached Ravana, Indrajith greeted him with folded palms and broke the pleasant news, "Rama and Lakshmana are killed."

YK-46-47Yuddha Kanda 46.47

उत्पपातततोहृष्टःपुत्रंचपरिषस्वजे ।।6.46.47।। रावणोरक्षसांमध्येश्रुत्वाशत्रूनिपातितौ ।

utpapātatatohṛṣṭḥputrṃcapariṣasvaje ||6.46.47|| rāvaṇorakṣasāṃmadhyeśrutvāśatrūnipātitau |

Translation

रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, मध्ये midst, रावणः Ravana, शत्रू enemy, निपातितौ killed, श्रुत्वा hearing, ततः then, हृष्टः rejoiced, उत्पपात got up, पुत्रम् son, पर्षिस्वजेच embraced

Meaning

In the midst of Rakshasas, Ravana hearing the news of his enemies being killed, rejoiced, and got up from his couch and embraced his son.

YK-46-48-49Yuddha Kanda 46.48–49 (युग्मम्)

उपाघ्रायचतंमूद् र्नेनंपप्रच्छप्रीतमानसः ।।6.46.48।। पृच्छतेचयथावृत्तंपित्रेतस्मैसर्वंन्यवेदयत् । यथातौशरबन्धेननिश्चेष्टौनिष्प्रभौकृतौ ।।6.46.49।।

upāghrāyacatṃmūd rnenṃpapracchaprītamānasḥ ||6.46.48|| pṛcchatecayathāvṛttṃpitretasmaisarvṃnyavedayat | yathātauśarabandhenaniśceṣṭauniṣprabhaukṛtau ||6.46.49||

Translation

पृच्छते enquired, पित्रे father, तौ both of them, शरबन्धेन from the network of arrows, निश्चेष्टौ stunned, निष्प्रभौ splendour gone, यथा like that, कृतौ did, तस्मै their, यथावृत्तम् all in detail, न्यवेदयत् presented.

Meaning

Delighted Ravana kissed his son on the forehead and enquired of him of the details. Indrajith presented details saying that both Rama and Lakshmana were stunned in the network of arrows, and lost splendour.

YK-46-50Yuddha Kanda 46.50

सहर्षवेगानुगतान्तरात्माश्रुत्वावचस्तस्यमहारथस्य । जहौज्वरंदाशरथेःसमुत्थितंप्रहृष्यवाचाऽभिननन्दपुत्रम् ।।6.46.50।।

saharṣavegānugatāntarātmāśrutvāvacastasyamahārathasya | jahaujvarṃdāśaratheḥsamutthitṃprahṛṣyavācā'bhinanandaputram ||6.46.50||

Translation

महारथस्य of the great chariot warrior, तस्य his, वचः words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, हर्षवेगानुगतान्तरात्मा filled with joy at heart, सः he, दाशरथेः Dasaratha's son, समुत्थितम् fear, ज्वरम् agony, जहौ gone, प्रहृष्यवाचा joyful words, पुत्रम् son, अभिननन्द greeted.

Meaning

Hearing the words of the great chariot warrior, Ravana was filled with excessive joy at heart. His fear and agony of Dasaratha's son having gone on hearing the words of his son, Ravana greeted him. ।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेषटचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः ।। This is the end of the forty sixth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
