YK-44-1Yuddha Kanda 44.1

युध्यतामेनतेषांतुतदावानरराक्षसाम् । रविरस्तंगतोरात्रिःप्रवृत्ताप्राणहारिणी ।।6.44.1।।

yudhyatāmenateṣāṃtutadāvānararākṣasām | ravirastṃgatorātriḥpravṛttāprāṇahāriṇī ||6.44.1||

Translation

तेषाम् their, वानररक्षसाम् Vanara and Rakshasa, युध्यतामेव battling, तदा then, रविः sun, अस्तम् set, गतः went, प्राणहारिणी harmful to the life, रात्रिः night, प्रवृत्ता began.

Meaning

Thus, as the Vanaras and Rakshasas were battling, the Sun began to set, which is not favourable to the life of Vanaras.

YK-44-2Yuddha Kanda 44.2

अन्योन्यंबद्धवैराणांघोराणांजयमिच्छताम् । सम्प्रवृत्तंनिशायुद्धंतदावानररक्षसाम् ।।6.44.2।।

anyonyṃbaddhavairāṇāṃghorāṇāṃjayamicchatām | sampravṛttṃniśāyuddhṃtadāvānararakṣasām ||6.44.2||

Translation

तदा then, अन्योन्यम् to one another, बद्धवैराणाम् strong enmity, घोराणाम् dreadful, जयम् victory, इच्छताम् wishing, वानररक्षसाम् Vanara and Rakshasas, निशायुद्धम् night battle, सम्प्रवृत्तम् started.

Meaning

Then Vanaras and dreadful Rakshasas being strongly inimical to each other started the night battle wishing victory.

YK-44-3Yuddha Kanda 44.3

राक्षसोऽसीतिहरयोहरिश्चाऽसीतिराक्षसाः । अन्योन्यंसमरेजघ्नुस्तस्मिंस्तमसिदारुणे ।।6.44.3।।

rākṣaso'sītiharayohariścā'sītirākṣasāḥ | anyonyṃsamarejaghnustasmiṃstamasidāruṇe ||6.44.3||

Translation

दारुणे fierce, तस्मिन् them, तमसि darkness, राक्षसःअसि thinking to be Rakshasa, इति thus, हरयः monkeys, हरिश्च and monkeys, असि thinking to be, इति thus, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, समरे fought, अन्योन्यम् one another, जघ्नुः hit .

Meaning

In the fierce darkness that prevailed, monkeys hit monkeys thinking to be Rakshasas and Rakshasas hit Rakshasas thinking to be Vanaras (not knowing in darkness) hit each other.

YK-44-4-5Yuddha Kanda 44.4–5 (युग्मम्)

जहिदारयचैहीतिकथंविद्रवसीतिच । एवंसुतुमुलश्शब्दस्तस्मिंस्तमसिशुश्रुवे ।।6.44.4।। कालाःकाञ्चनसन्नाहास्तस्मिंस्तमसिराक्षसाः । सम्प्रदृश्यन्तशैलेन्द्रादीप्तौषधिवनाइव ।।6.44.5।।

jahidārayacaihītikathṃvidravasītica | evṃsutumulaśśabdastasmiṃstamasiśuśruve ||6.44.4|| kālāḥkāñcanasannāhāstasmiṃstamasirākṣasāḥ | sampradṛśyantaśailendrādīptauṣadhivanāiva ||6.44.5||

Translation

जहिदारय strike, चैहीति tear, कथं how, विद्रवसीतिच why do you run away, एवं in this manner, सुतुमुलश्शब्द loud echo, स्तस्मिं such was, स्तमसि darkness, शुश्रुवे heard, तस्मिन् such was, तमसि dark complexioned, कालाः night, काञ्चनसन्नाहाः covered with golden armour, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, दीप्तौषधिवनाः shining like the herbs in the forests, शैलेन्द्राः mountain, सम्प्रदृश्यन्त appeared.

Meaning

"Strike", "Tear", "Why are you running away?" were the kind of tumultuous echo heard in the darkness of the night. In that darkness the dark complexioned Vanaras and Rakshasas covered with golden armour in the night seemed like shining herbs of the forest in the mountain.

YK-44-6Yuddha Kanda 44.6

तस्मिंस्तमसिदुष्पारेराक्षसाःक्रोधमूर्छिताः । परिपेतुर्महावेगाभक्षयन्तःप्लवङ्गमान् ।।6.44.6।।

tasmiṃstamasiduṣpārerākṣasāḥkrodhamūrchitāḥ | paripeturmahāvegābhakṣayantḥplavaṅgamān ||6.44.6||

Translation

दुष्पारे difficult to penetrate, तस्मिन् in that, तमसि darkness, क्रोधमूर्छिता lost senses overcome by anger, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, प्लवङ्गमान् monkeys, भक्षयन्तः devouring, महावेगाः swiftly, परिपेतुः wandered.

Meaning

In that pitch darkness, which was difficult even to move, the Rakshasas overcome by anger and lost senses were wandering devouring the monkeys.

YK-44-7Yuddha Kanda 44.7

तेहयान् काञ्चनापीडान् ध्वजांश्चाशीविषोपमान् । आप्लुत्यदशनैस्तीक्ष्णैर्भीमकोपाव्यदारयन् ।।6.44.7।। वानराबलिनोयुद्धेऽक्षोभयन् राक्षसींचमूम् ।

tehayān kāñcanāpīḍān dhvajāṃścāśīviṣopamān | āplutyadaśanaistīkṣṇairbhīmakopāvyadārayan ||6.44.7|| vānarābalinoyuddhe'kṣobhayan rākṣasīṃcamūm |

Translation

भीमकोपाः terribly angry, बलिनः mighty strong, तेवानराः those Vanaras, आप्लुत्य springing up, तीक्ष्णैः their sharp, धवनैः teeth, काञ्चनापीडान् golden ornaments, हयान् horses, आशीविषोपमान् pervading like fire, ध्वजांश्च of the horses, व्यदारयन् splitting, युद्धे in battle, राक्षसीम् Rakshasa's, चमूम् , अक्षोभयन् tore to pieces.

Meaning

The mighty strong Vanaras, terribly angry at the Rakshasas sprang up to the sky, and tore with their sharp teeth, the horses of Rakshasas decked with golden ornaments pervading like fire in the battle.

YK-44-8Yuddha Kanda 44.8

कुञ्जरान् कुञ्जरारोहान् पताकाध्वजिनोरथान् ।।6.44.8।। कर्षुश्चददंशुश्चदशनैःक्रोधमूर्छिताः ।

kuñjarān kuñjarārohān patākādhvajinorathān ||6.44.8|| karṣuścadadṃśuścadaśanaiḥkrodhamūrchitāḥ |

Translation

व्यदारयन् lost sense with anger, कुञ्जरान् elephants, कुञ्जरारोहान् mounted on elephants, पताकाध्वजिनः posts tied with flags, रथान् chariots, चकर्षुः dragged them, दशनैः with teeth, ददंशुश्च destroyed.

Meaning

Having lost senses in fury they dragged the elephants, those mounted upon them, and the chariots decorated with posts and flags and tore them with their teeth.

YK-44-9Yuddha Kanda 44.9

लक्ष्मणश्चापिरामश्चशरैराशीविषोपमैः ।।6.44.9।। दृश्यादृश्यानिरक्षांसिप्रवराणिनिजघ्नतुः ।

lakṣmaṇaścāpirāmaścaśarairāśīviṣopamaiḥ ||6.44.9|| dṛśyādṛśyānirakṣāṃsipravarāṇinijaghnatuḥ |

Translation

रामश्च Rama as well, लक्ष्मणश्चापि as Lakshmana also, आशीविषोपमैः shining like venomous snakes, शरैः arrows, दृश्यादृश्यानि visible and invisible, प्रवराणि principal, रक्षांसि Rakshasas, निजघ्नतुः killed

Meaning

Then Rama as well as Lakshmana with their venomous snakelike arrows killed both visible and invisible principal Rakshasas.

YK-44-10Yuddha Kanda 44.10

तुरङ्गखुरविध्वस्तंरथनेमिसमुत्थितम् ।।6.44.10।। रुरोधकर्णनेत्राणियुध्यतांधरणीरजः ।

turaṅgakhuravidhvastṃrathanemisamutthitam ||6.44.10|| rurodhakarṇanetrāṇiyudhyatāṃdharaṇīrajḥ |

Translation

तुरङ्गखुरविध्वस्तम् pulverised by the horses hooves, रथनेमिसमुत्थितम् crushed by the wheels of chariots, धरणीरजः dust from the ground, युध्यताम् risen, कर्णनेत्राणि ears and eyes, रुरोध filled.

Meaning

Then the dust rose from the ground pulverised the horses' hooves and crushed by the chariot wheels, filling the ears and eyes of those in war.

YK-44-11Yuddha Kanda 44.11

वर्तमानेतथाघोरेसङ्ग्रामेरोमहर्षणे ।।6.44.11।। रुधिरोधामहाघोरानद्यस्तत्रप्रसुस्रुवुः ।

vartamānetathāghoresaṅgrāmeromaharṣaṇe ||6.44.11|| rudhirodhāmahāghorānadyastatraprasusruvuḥ |

Translation

तथा like that, घोरे terrible, रोमहर्षणे horripilation, सङ्ग्रामे war, वर्तमाने moving, रुधिरोधा river of blood, महाघोराः terrific, नद्यः noise, तत्र there, प्रसुस्रुवुः flowed.

Meaning

In that way as the war was going on, and rivers of blood flowing with the terrific noise it made hair stand on end.

YK-44-12Yuddha Kanda 44.12

ततोभेरीमृदङ्गानांपणवानांचनिस्स्वनः ।।6.44.12।। शङ्खवेणुस्वनोन्मिश्रस्सम्भूवाद्भुतोपमः ।

tatobherīmṛdaṅgānāṃpaṇavānāṃcanissvanḥ ||6.44.12|| śaṅkhaveṇusvanonmiśrassambhūvādbhutopamḥ |

Translation

ततः there, भेरीमृदङ्गानाम् kettle drums and wooden drums, पणवानांच musical instrument panava, शङ्खवेणुस्वनोमनिश्रः sounds of conchs, flutes mixed, अद्भुतोपमः wonderful, निस्स्वनः rattling sounds, सम्बभूव arose.

Meaning

There arose wonderful sounds of musical instruments, the sounds of kettle drums, wooden drums, mixed with conchs and flutes.

YK-44-13Yuddha Kanda 44.13

हतानांस्तनमानानांराक्षसानांचनिःस्वनः ।।6.44.13।। शस्तानांवानराणांचसम्बभूवातिदारुणः ।

hatānāṃstanamānānāṃrākṣasānāṃcaniḥsvanḥ ||6.44.13|| śastānāṃvānarāṇāṃcasambabhūvātidāruṇḥ |

Translation

अत्र there, स्तनमानानाम् in the battlefield, हतानाम् wounded, राक्षसानांच Rakshasas, शस्तानाम् appeased, वानराणांच and Vanaras, दारुणः dreadful, निःस्वनः roaring sounds, सम्बभूव arose.

Meaning

There from the battlefield arose the roaring sounds of wounded and appeased Rakshasas and Vanaras.

YK-44-14-15Yuddha Kanda 44.14–15 (युग्मम्)

हतैर्वानरवीरैश्चशक्तिशूलपरश्वधैः ।।6.44.14।। निहतैःपर्वताकारैराक्षसैःकामरूपिभिः । शस्त्रपुष्पोपहाराचतत्रासीद्युद्धमेदिनी ।।6.44.15।। दुर् ज्ञेयादुर्निवेशाचशोणितास्रावकर्दमा ।

hatairvānaravīraiścaśaktiśūlaparaśvadhaiḥ ||6.44.14|| nihataiḥparvatākārairākṣasaiḥkāmarūpibhiḥ | śastrapuṣpopahārācatatrāsīdyuddhamedinī ||6.44.15|| dur jñeyādurniveśācaśoṇitāsrāvakardamā |

Translation

तत्र there, शस्त्रपुष्पोपहारा offering of flowers dropped from enemies (from the mountain), युद्धमेदिनी on the battlefield, हतैः killed, वानरवीरैश्च Vanara warriors also, शक्तिशूलपरश्वधैः by javelins, tridents and axes, निहतैः wounded, कामरूपिभिः who can change their form at will, पर्वताकारैः of mountain size, राक्षसैः Rakshasa, शोणितास्रावकर्दमा wetted by the flow of blood, दुर् ज्ञेया muddy, दुर्निवेशाच difficult to reach, आसीत् remained.

Meaning

There with warriors of Vanaras wounded by javelins, tridents and axes, and the Rakshasas of mountain size who could change their form at will, the battlefield was muddy, and wet with blood flowing and difficult to reach.

YK-44-16Yuddha Kanda 44.16

साबभूवनिशाघोराहरिराक्षसहारिणी ।।6.44.16।। कालरात्रीवभूतानांसर्वेषांदुरतिक्रमा ।

sābabhūvaniśāghorāharirākṣasahāriṇī ||6.44.16|| kālarātrīvabhūtānāṃsarveṣāṃduratikramā |

Translation

सर्वेषाम् for all beings, भूतानाम् beings, दुरतिक्रमा difficult to pass, कालरात्रीव like the night of dissolution, सानिशा that night, घोरा fierce, हरिराक्षसनाशिनी destructive to Vanaras and Rakshasas, बभूव remained.

Meaning

Like the dreadful night for all beings, difficult to spend, as if it were a dissolution, destructive to Vanaras and Rakshasas.

YK-44-17Yuddha Kanda 44.17

ततस्तेराक्षसास्तत्रतस्मिंस्तमसिदारुणे ।।6.44.17।। राममेवाभ्यवर्तन्तसम्हृष्टाश्शरवृष्टिभिः ।

tatasterākṣasāstatratasmiṃstamasidāruṇe ||6.44.17|| rāmamevābhyavartantasamhṛṣṭāśśaravṛṣṭibhiḥ |

Translation

ततः thereafter, तत्र there, परमदारुणे exceedingly fearsome, तस्मिन् तमसि in that dark night, तेराक्षसाः those Rakshasas, सम्हृष्टाः highly delighted, शरवृष्टिभिः rain of arrows, राममेव Rama himself, अभ्यवर्तन्त assailed.

Meaning

Thereafter in that exceedingly fearsome dark night in the battlefield highly delighted Rakshasas assailed Rama with a rain of arrows.

YK-44-18Yuddha Kanda 44.18

तेषामापततांशब्दःक्रुद्धानामपिगर्जताम् ।।6.44.18।। उद्वर्तइवसत्त्व, नांसमुद्राणांप्रशुश्रुवे ।

teṣāmāpatatāṃśabdḥkruddhānāmapigarjatām ||6.44.18|| udvartaivasattva, nāṃsamudrāṇāṃpraśuśruve |

Translation

क्रुद्धानाम् angry Rakshasas, गर्जताम् thundering, आपतताम् rushing towards, तेषाम् them, शब्दः noise, सत्त्वानाम् seven seas, उद्वर्ते risen to flow, समुद्राणाम् into ocean, प्रशुश्रुवे heard.

Meaning

The thundering noise of the angry Rakshasas rushing towards Rama was like the seven seas rising to flow into the ocean.

YK-44-19-21Yuddha Kanda 44.19–21 (त्रिकम्)

तेषांरामश्शरैःषडिभःषडजघाननिशाचरान् ।।6.44.19।। निमेषान्तरमात्रेणशितैरग्निशिखोपमैः । यमशत्रुश्चदुर्धर्षोमहापार्श्वमहोदरौ ।।6.44.20।। वज्रदंष्ट्रोमहाकायस्तौचोभौशुकसारणौ । तेतुरामेणबाणौघैस्सर्वेमर्मसुताडिताः ।।6.44.21।। युद्धादपसृतास्तत्रसावशेषायुषोऽभवन् ।

teṣāṃrāmaśśaraiḥṣaḍibhḥṣaḍajaghānaniśācarān ||6.44.19|| nimeṣāntaramātreṇaśitairagniśikhopamaiḥ | yamaśatruścadurdharṣomahāpārśvamahodarau ||6.44.20|| vajradṃṣṭromahākāyastaucobhauśukasāraṇau | teturāmeṇabāṇaughaissarvemarmasutāḍitāḥ ||6.44.21|| yuddhādapasṛtāstatrasāvaśeṣāyuṣo'bhavan |

Translation

तेषां their, रामश्शरैः Rama's shafts, षडिभः six, षडजघान striking the six best, निशाचरान् Rakshasas, निमेषान्तरमात्रेण in the time of twinkling of eyelid, शितैरग्निशिखोपमै like flames, दुर्धर्षः difficult to overcome, यमशत्रुश्च Yamastru, महापार्श्वमहोदरौ Mahaparva, Mahodara, महाकायः Mahakaya, वज्रदंष्ट्रः Vajradamshtra, तौ them, उभौ both, शुकसारणौ Suka, Sarana, ते they, रामेण by Rama, बाणौघैः fire of arrows, सर्वमर्मसु vital parts, ताडिताः pierced by, तत्र there, युद्धात् from tha battle, अपसृताः escaped, सावशेषायुषः with left over life, अभवन् remained.

Meaning

On Rama striking with the six best of shafts like flames in a time of twinkling of eyelids, the six Rakshasas, Yamasatru, Mahaparva, Mahodara, Mahakaya, and Vajradamshtra found it difficult to overcome. Along with the two Suka, Saranas all of them were struck by Rama's fire like arrows in their vital parts and escaped with leftover life.

YK-44-22Yuddha Kanda 44.22

तत्रकाञ्चनचित्राङ्गैश्शरैरग्निशिखोपमैः ।।6.44.22।। दिशश्चकारविमलाःप्रदिशश्चमहारथः ।

tatrakāñcanacitrāṅgaiśśarairagniśikhopamaiḥ ||6.44.22|| diśaścakāravimalāḥpradiśaścamahārathḥ |

Translation

महारथः mighty, तत्रकाञ्चनचित्रङ्गैः decorated with gold, शरैः shafts, अग्निशिखोपमैः like the flames of fire, दिशश्च in all the directions, प्रदिशश्च brightened, विमलाः bright, चकार created.

Meaning

Mighty Rama with his shafts that were like flames of fire, decorated with gold, brightened in all directions.

YK-44-23Yuddha Kanda 44.23

येत्वन्येराक्षसाभीमारामस्याभिमुखेस्थिताः ।।6.44.23।। तेऽपिनष्टाःसमासाद्यपतङ्गाइवपावकम् ।

yetvanyerākṣasābhīmārāmasyābhimukhesthitāḥ ||6.44.23|| te'pinaṣṭāḥsamāsādyapataṅgāivapāvakam |

Translation

रामस्य Rama's, अभिमुखे in front, स्थिताः stood, अन्ये other, ये who so ever, भीमा fierce, राक्षसाः Rakshasa, तेऽपि be it, पावकम् fire, आसाद्य fallen, पतङ्गाःइव like fireflies, नष्टाः destroyed.

Meaning

Those fierce Rakshasas who stood in front of Rama were destroyed like fireflies fallen in fire.

YK-44-24Yuddha Kanda 44.24

सुवर्णपुङ्खैर्विशिखैस्सपतद्भिस्सहस्रशः ।।6.44.24।। बभूवरजनीचित्राखद्योतैरिवशारदी ।

suvarṇapuṅkhairviśikhaissapatadbhissahasraśḥ ||6.44.24|| babhūvarajanīcitrākhadyotairivaśāradī |

Translation

सहस्रशः thousands, सम्पतद्भिः raining, सुवर्णपुङ्खैः golden feathered, विशिखैः arrows, रजनी night, खद्योतैः illumined by fireflies, शारदीव in autumnal, चित्रा wonderful, बभूव appeared.

Meaning

By the rain of thousands of golden feathered arrows, the night appeared as if illumined by fireflies and like a wonderful autumnal night.

YK-44-25Yuddha Kanda 44.25

राक्षसानांचनिनदैर्हरीणांचापिनिस्स्वनैः ।।6.44.25।। साबभूवनिशाघोराभूयोघोरतरातदा ।

rākṣasānāṃcaninadairharīṇāṃcāpinissvanaiḥ ||6.44.25|| sābabhūvaniśāghorābhūyoghoratarātadā |

Translation

घोरा fierce, सानिशा that night, तदा then, राक्षसानाम् Rakshasas, हरीणाम् Vanaras, निस्स्वनैःच making noise, भूयः appeared, घोरतरा more dreadful, बभूव was.

Meaning

The night which was fierce appeared more dreadful with the loud noise of Rakshasas and Vanaras.

YK-44-26Yuddha Kanda 44.26

तेनशब्देनमहताप्रवृद्धेनसमन्ततः ।।6.44.26।। त्रिकूटःकन्दराकीर्णःप्रव्याहरदिवाचलः ।

tenaśabdenamahatāpravṛddhenasamantatḥ ||6.44.26|| trikūṭḥkandarākīrṇḥpravyāharadivācalḥ |

Translation

समन्ततः all over, प्रवृद्धेन risen, महता huge, तेन by that, शब्देन sound, कन्धराकीर्णः groups of caves, त्रिकूटःअचलः Trikuta mountain, प्रव्याहरदिव responded as if it was someone's call.

Meaning

Resounding with the sound rising all over the caves of Trikuta mountain echoed and it looked as if the mountain was responding to someone's call.

YK-44-27Yuddha Kanda 44.27

गोलाङ्गूलामहाकायास्तमसातुल्यवर्चसः ।।6.44.27।। सम्परिष्वज्यबाहुभ्यांभक्षयन्रजनीचरान् ।

golāṅgūlāmahākāyāstamasātulyavarcasḥ ||6.44.27|| sampariṣvajyabāhubhyāṃbhakṣayanrajanīcarān |

Translation

महाकायाः of gigantic body, तमसा dark complexioned, तुल्यवर्चसः highly energetic, गोलाङ्गूलाः endowed with long tails and black face, बाहुभ्याम् with their shoulders, सम्परिष्वज्य holding, रजनीचरान् Rakshasas, भक्षयन् allowed to be devoured.

Meaning

The dark complexioned Rakshasas of gigantic body, who were highly energetic were held tightly by the monkeys with black faces and long tails and allowed them to be devoured.

YK-44-28Yuddha Kanda 44.28

अङ्गदस्तुरणेशत्रूननिहन्तुंसमुपस्थितः ।।6.44.28।। रावणिंनिजघानाशुसारथिंचहयानपि ।

aṅgadasturaṇeśatrūnanihantuṃsamupasthitḥ ||6.44.28|| rāvaṇiṃnijaghānāśusārathiṃcahayānapi |

Translation

रणे in war, शत्रून् enemies, निहन्तुम् killing, समुपस्थितः who stood determined, अङ्गदस्तु Angada's, आशु in no time, रावणिम् Ravana's, सारथिंच charioteer, हयानपि horses also, निजघान wounded.

Meaning

Angada who was determined to kill the enemies, in no time wounded Ravana's charioteer and also the horses.

YK-44-29-30Yuddha Kanda 44.29–30 (युग्मम्)

वर्तमानेतदाघोरेसङ्ग्रामेभृशदारुणे ।।6.44.29।। इन्द्रजित्तुरथंत्यक्त्वाहताश्वोहतसारथिः । अङ्गदेनमहामायस्तत्रैवान्तरधीयत ।।6.44.30।।

vartamānetadāghoresaṅgrāmebhṛśadāruṇe ||6.44.29|| indrajitturathṃtyaktvāhatāśvohatasārathiḥ | aṅgadenamahāmāyastatraivāntaradhīyata ||6.44.30||

Translation

तदा then, घोरे terrific, भृशदारुणे violent, सङ्ग्रामे from the battlefield, अङ्गदेन by Angada, हताश्वः horses being killed, हतसारथिः charioteer killed, महामायः great cheater, इन्द्रजित्तु Indrajith, तत्स्रैव himself, अन्तरधीयत disappeared.

Meaning

As the violent war was going on, the great cheat, Indrajith disappeared from there as Angada had already killed his horses and charioteer.

YK-44-31Yuddha Kanda 44.31

तत्कर्मवालिपुत्रस्यसर्वेदेवास्सहर्षिभिः । तुष्टुवुःपूजनार्हस्यतौचोभौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।।6.44.31।।

tatkarmavāliputrasyasarvedevāssaharṣibhiḥ | tuṣṭuvuḥpūjanārhasyataucobhaurāmalakṣmaṇau ||6.44.31||

Translation

पूजनार्हस्य one who deserves to be worshipped, वालिपुत्रस्य Vali's son's, तत् कर्म that deed, सहर्षिभिः even sages, सर्वे all, देवाः deities, उभौ both, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshman, तुष्टुवुः praised.

Meaning

YK-44-32Yuddha Kanda 44.32

प्रभावंसर्वभूतानिविदुरिन्द्रजितोयुधि । तेनतेतंमहात्मानंतुष्टाःदृष्टवाप्रधर्षितम् ।।6.44.32।।

prabhāvṃsarvabhūtānividurindrajitoyudhi | tenatetṃmahātmānṃtuṣṭāḥdṛṣṭavāpradharṣitam ||6.44.32||

Translation

युधि in war, इन्द्रजितः Indrajith, प्रभावम् deeds, सर्वभूतानि all beings, विदुः knew, तेन therefore, महात्मानम् great, ते his, प्रधर्षितम् gratified, तं him, दृष्टवा seeing, तुष्टाः rejoiced.

Meaning

All beings present in war were aware of Indrajith's deeds. Therefore, they were gratified to see him defeated.

YK-44-33Yuddha Kanda 44.33

ततःप्रहृष्टाःकपयस्ससुग्रीवविभीषणाः । साधुसाध्वितिनेदुश्चदृष्टवाशत्रुंप्रधर्षितम् ।।6.44.33।।

tatḥprahṛṣṭāḥkapayassasugrīvavibhīṣaṇāḥ | sādhusādhvitineduścadṛṣṭavāśatruṃpradharṣitam ||6.44.33||

Translation

ततः thereafter, ससुग्रीवविभीषणाः Sugriva and Vibheeshana, कपयः all monkeys, शत्रुम् enemy, प्रधर्षितम् gratification, दृष्टवा seeing, प्रहृष्टाः rejoiced, साधुसाध्विति excellent well done, नेदुश्च cried out.

Meaning

Thereafter, Sugriva, Vibheeshana and all monkeys gratified with Angada's deed cried out saying "Excellent, Well done".

YK-44-34Yuddha Kanda 44.34

इन्द्रजित्तुतदातेननिर्जितोभीमकर्मणा । संयुगेवालिपुत्रेणक्रोधंचक्रेसुदारुणम् ।।6.44.34।।

indrajittutadātenanirjitobhīmakarmaṇā | sṃyugevāliputreṇakrodhṃcakresudāruṇam ||6.44.34||

Translation

तदा then, भीमकर्मणा of terrible deeds, तेनवालिपुत्रेण by Vali's son Angada, सम्युगे in the combat, निर्जितः defeated, इन्द्रजित्तु Indrajith, सुदारुणम् terrible, क्रोधम् anger, चक्रे turned.

Meaning

Then Indrajith of terrible deeds defeated by Angada in the comb at became terribly angry.

YK-44-35Yuddha Kanda 44.35

सोऽन्तर्धानगतःपापोरावणीरणकर्कशः । अदृश्योनिशितान्बाणान्मुमोचाशनिवर्चसः ।।6.44.35।।

so'ntardhānagatḥpāporāvaṇīraṇakarkaśḥ | adṛśyoniśitānbāṇānmumocāśanivarcasḥ ||6.44.35||

Translation

पापः sinful, रणकर्कशः capable of encounter, सःरावणि that Ravana, अदृश्यः rising up, अशनिवर्चसः remaining invisible, निशितान् sharp arrows, बाणान् by arrows, मुमोच remained.

Meaning

That sinful son of Ravana, who is capable of encountering rising up remained invisible and shot sharp arrows.

YK-44-36Yuddha Kanda 44.36

सरामंलक्ष्मणंचैवघोरैर्नागमयैश्शरैः । बिभेदसमरेक्रुद्धःसर्वगात्रेषुराक्षसः ।।6.44.36।।

sarāmṃlakṣmaṇṃcaivaghorairnāgamayaiśśaraiḥ | bibhedasamarekruddhḥsarvagātreṣurākṣasḥ ||6.44.36||

Translation

क्रुद्धः angry, समरे in war, घोरैः terrific, नागमयैः full of serpents, शरैः arrows, राक्षसः Rakshasa, रामंच at Rama, लक्ष्मणंचैव and Lakshmana, सर्वगात्रेषु all over the body, बिभेद pierced.

Meaning

The angry Rakshasa (remaining invisible) pierced arrows full of serpents all over the body of Rama and Lakshmana.

YK-44-37Yuddha Kanda 44.37

माययासम्वृतस्तत्रमोहयन्राघवौयुधि । अदृश्यस्सर्वभूतानांकूटयोधीनिशाचरः ।।6.44.37।। बबन्धशरबन्धेनभ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ ।

māyayāsamvṛtastatramohayanrāghavauyudhi | adṛśyassarvabhūtānāṃkūṭayodhīniśācarḥ ||6.44.37|| babandhaśarabandhenabhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau |

Translation

कूटयोधी waging war incognito, निशाचरः Rakshasa, तत्र there, युधि in war, मयया by supernatural power, सम्वृतः surrounded, राघवौ Raghava, मोहयन् in delusion, सर्वभूतानाम् all beings, अदृश्यः, भ्रातरौ brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshman, शरबन्धेन network of arrows, बबन्ध bound.

Meaning

The Rakshasa waging war in invisible form with all beings by his supernatural powers fought with both the brothers, Rama and Lakshmana and bound them in a network of arrows.

YK-44-38Yuddha Kanda 44.38

तेनतौपुरुषव्याघ्रौक्रुद्धेनाशीविषैश्शरैः ।।6.44.38।। सहसानिहतौवीरौतदाप्रैक्षन्तवानराः ।

tenataupuruṣavyāghraukruddhenāśīviṣaiśśaraiḥ ||6.44.38|| sahasānihatauvīrautadāpraikṣantavānarāḥ |

Translation

तदा then, वानराः Vanara, क्रुद्धेन by angry, तेन their, आशीविषैः like venomous monkeys, शरैः arrows, सहसा forcibly, अनिहतौ bound, वीरौ warriors, पुरुषव्याघ्रौ tigers among men, तौ they both, प्रैक्षन्त beheld.

Meaning

Then the Vanaras beheld the two brothers, tigers among men bound forcibly by the angry Rakshasas like venomous monkeys.

YK-44-39Yuddha Kanda 44.39

प्रकाशरूपस्तुतदानशक्तस्तौबाधितुंराक्षसराजपुत्रः । मायांप्रयोक्तुंसमुपाजगामबबन्धतौराजसुतौदुरात्मा ।।6.44.39।।

prakāśarūpastutadānaśaktastaubādhituṃrākṣasarājaputrḥ | māyāṃprayoktuṃsamupājagāmababandhataurājasutaudurātmā ||6.44.39||

Translation

तदा then, राक्षसराजपुत्रः Rakshasa king's son, प्रकाशरूपः bright form, तौ both, बाधितुम् to bind, नशक्तः incapable, मायाम् deceitfully, प्रयोक्तुम् using, समुपाजगाम remaining invisible, दुरात्मा evil minded, तौ both, राजसुतौ king's sons, बबन्ध bound.

Meaning

Then the evil minded Rakshasa king's son, being incapable of getting bound in visible form, by remaining invisible, bound them deceitfully. ।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेचतुश्चत्वारिंशस्सर्गः ।। This is the end of the forty fourth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
