YK-112-1Yuddha Kanda 112.1

भ्रातरंनिहतंदृष्टवाशयानंनिर्जितंरणे । शोकवेगपरीतात्माविललापविभीषणः ।।6.112.1।।

bhrātarṃnihatṃdṛṣṭavāśayānṃnirjitṃraṇe | śokavegaparītātmāvilalāpavibhīṣaṇḥ ||6.112.1||

Translation

रणे battlefield, निर्जितम् without life, निहतम् killed, शयानम् lying, भ्रातरम् brother, दृष्टवा seeing, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, शोकवेगपरीतात्मा immersed in sorrow, विललाप lamented

Meaning

Vibheeshana, seeing his brother killed and lying in the battlefield, lamented immersed in sorrow.

YK-112-2Yuddha Kanda 112.2

वीर विक्रान्त विख्यात प्रवीण नयकोविद । महार्हाशयनोपेतकिंशेषेनिहतोभुवि ।।6.112.2।।

vīra vikrānta vikhyāta pravīṇa nayakovida | mahārhāśayanopetakiṃśeṣenihatobhuvi ||6.112.2||

Translation

वीर valiant, विक्रान्त powerful, विख्यात renowned, प्रवीण skilled in all fields, नयकोविद in polity, महार्हशयनोपेत accustomed to sumptuous bed, निहतः killed, भुवि on ground, किम् why, शेषे lying

Meaning

"O valiant, powerful and renowned king! You who were skilled in all fields and in polity, accustomed to a sumptuous bed, why are you lying on ground?"

YK-112-3Yuddha Kanda 112.3

विक्षिप्यदीर्घौनिश्चेष्टौभुजावङ्गभूषितौ । मुकुटेनापवृत्तेनभास्कराकारवर्चसा ।।6.112.3।।

vikṣipyadīrghauniśceṣṭaubhujāvaṅgabhūṣitau | mukuṭenāpavṛttenabhāskarākāravarcasā ||6.112.3||

Translation

अङ्गदभूषितौ decked with armlets, निश्चेष्टौ motionless, भुजौ arms, विक्षिप्य broken, अपवृत्ने knocked down, भास्करा Sun, कारवर्चसा charming armlets, मुकुटेन with the crown

Meaning

"Decked with armlets, motionless are your arms, broken, knocked down with the crown, radiant like the Sun."

YK-112-4Yuddha Kanda 112.4

दंवीरसम्प्राप्तंयन्मयापूर्वमीरितम् । काममोहपरीतस्ययत्तन्नरुचितंतव ।।6.112.4।।

dṃvīrasamprāptṃyanmayāpūrvamīritam | kāmamohaparītasyayattannarucitṃtava ||6.112.4||

Translation

वीर hero, मया by me, यत् this, पूर्वम् earlier, ईरितम् predicted, यत् that which, काममोहपरीतस्य overcome by infatuation, तव your, न रुचितम् not find favour, तत् that, इदम् thus, प्राप्तम् true

Meaning

"Hero! That which was predicted by me earlier, which did not find your favour due to your infatuation, has come true."

YK-112-5Yuddha Kanda 112.5

यन्नदर्पात्प्रहस्तोवानेन्द्रजिन्नापरेजनाः । न कुम्बकर्णोऽतिरथोनातिकायोनरान्तकः ।।6.112.5।। न स्वयंत्वममन्येथास्तस्योदर्कोऽयमागतः ।

yannadarpātprahastovānendrajinnāparejanāḥ | na kumbakarṇo'tirathonātikāyonarāntakḥ ||6.112.5|| na svayṃtvamamanyethāstasyodarko'yamāgatḥ |

Translation

यत् that which, दर्पात् out of pride, प्रहस्तोवा either Prahastha, इन्द्रजित् Indrajith, अपरेजनाः other Rakshasas, न nor, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, न nor, अतिरथः exceeding car warrior, अतिकायः Athikaya, नरान्तकः Naranthaka, न nor, स्वयम् you also, त्वम् your, न अमन्येथाः not cared for, तस्य its, अयम् this, उदर्कः consequence, आगतः has come

Meaning

"Either Prahastha or Indrajith or other Rakshasas, or even Kumbhakarna, an exceeding car warrior, nor Atikaya or Naranthaka or you also did not care for my counsel. Its consequence has come now."

YK-112-6-8Yuddha Kanda 112.6–8 (त्रिकम्)

गतस्सेतुस्सुनीतीनांगतोधर्मस्यविग्रहः ।।6.112.6।। गतस्सत्त्वस्यसङ्क्षेपःप्रस्तावानांगतिर्गता । आदित्यःपतितोभूमौमग्नस्तमसिचन्द्रमाः ।।6.112.7।। चित्रभानुःप्रशान्तार्चिर्व्यवसायोनिरुद्यमः । अस्मिन्निपतितेवीरे भूमौशस्त्रभृतांवरे ।।6.112.8।।

gatassetussunītīnāṃgatodharmasyavigrahḥ ||6.112.6|| gatassattvasyasaṅkṣepḥprastāvānāṃgatirgatā | ādityḥpatitobhūmaumagnastamasicandramāḥ ||6.112.7|| citrabhānuḥpraśāntārcirvyavasāyonirudyamḥ | asminnipatitevīre bhūmauśastrabhṛtāṃvare ||6.112.8||

Translation

शस्त्रभृताम् wielders of weapons, वरे choicest, अस्मिन् वीरे this hero, भूमौ on ground, निपतिते fallen down, सुनीतीनाम् prudent, सेतुः boundary, गतः disappeared, धर्मस्य righteousness, विग्रहः form, गतः departed, सत्त्वस्य repository of might, सङ्क्षेपः thrown down, गतः out of sight, प्रस्तावानाम् praise worthy for all, गतिः position, गता lost, आदित्यः Sun, भूमौ on ground, पतितः fallen, चन्द्रमाः moon, तमसि darkness, मग्नः plunged, चित्रभानुः fire, प्रशान्तार्चिः extinct, व्यवसायः enthusiasm, निरुद्यमः wasted

Meaning

" As this hero, the wielder of weapons has fallen down on ground, the prudent one who was at boundary, disappeared he who was the form of righteousness, departed he who was a repository of might, thrown down and out of sight he, who was praiseworthy for all, lost position. With the hero falling down, it seems the Sun has fallen down, the moon plunged into darkness, fire became extinct, and the enthusiasm of people wasted."

YK-112-9Yuddha Kanda 112.9

किंशेषमिहलोकस्यगतसत्त्वस्यसम्प्रति । रणेराक्षसशार्दूलेप्रसुप्तइवपांसुषु ।।6.112.9।।

kiṃśeṣamihalokasyagatasattvasyasamprati | raṇerākṣasaśārdūleprasuptaivapāṃsuṣu ||6.112.9||

Translation

राक्षसशार्दूले tiger among Rakshasas, रणे in the battlefield, पांसुषु dust, प्रसुप्तेइव fallen like this asleep, सम्प्रति everything, गतसत्त्वस्य strength departed, लोकस्य in the world, इह now, किम् what, शेषम् is left

Meaning

"With the tiger among the Rakshasas fallen asleep like this in the dust in the battlefield, strength of the people departed. What is left in this world?"

YK-112-10Yuddha Kanda 112.10

धृतिप्रवालःप्रसह्याग्य्रपुष्पस्तपोबलश्शौर्यनिबद्धमूलः । रणेमहान्राक्षसराजवृक्षःसम्मर्दितोराघवमारुतेन ।।6.112.10।।

dhṛtipravālḥprasahyāgyrapuṣpastapobalaśśauryanibaddhamūlḥ | raṇemahānrākṣasarājavṛkṣḥsammarditorāghavamārutena ||6.112.10||

Translation

धृतिप्रवालः firmness as leaves, प्रसह्याग्य्रपुष्प stubbornness as blossom, तपोबलः austerity, शौर्यनिबद्धमालः valour as strong roots, महान् great, राक्षसराजवृक्षः tree of Rakshasa king, राघवमारुतेन by the tempest of Raghava, रणे in the battlefield, संमर्धितः crushed

Meaning

"The great tree in the form of Rakshasa king, with its firmness as leaves, stubbornness as its blossom, austerity as strength, valour as strong roots, was crushed by the tempest of Raghava in the battlefield."

YK-112-11Yuddha Kanda 112.11

तेजोविषाणःकुलवंशवंशःकोपप्रसादापरगात्रहस्तः । इक्ष्वाकुसिंहावगृहीतदेहःसुप्तःक्षितौरावणगन्धहस्ती ।।6.112.11।।

tejoviṣāṇḥkulavṃśavṃśḥkopaprasādāparagātrahastḥ | ikṣvākusiṃhāvagṛhītadehḥsuptḥkṣitaurāvaṇagandhahastī ||6.112.11||

Translation

तेजोविषाणः prowess as tusks, कुलवंशवंशः the father and grandfather as back of the body, कोपप्रसादपरगात्रहस्तः wrath as lower body and graciousness as proboscis, रावणगन्धहस्ती, Ravana as the elephant in rut, इक्ष्वाकुसिंसावगृहीतदेहः lion in the shape of king of Ikshvaku race, क्षितौ overthrown on the ground, सुप्तः lying asleep

Meaning

"Ravana's prowess as tusks, father and grand fathers' race as back of the body, wrath as lower body and graciousness as proboscis, overthrown by a lion in the shape of Ikshvaku race having killed him he is lying asleep thrown down."

YK-112-12Yuddha Kanda 112.12

पराक्रमोत्साहविजृम्भितार्चिर्निःश्वासधूमस्स्वबलप्रतापः । प्रतापवान्सम्यतिराक्षसाग्निर्विर्वापितोरामपयोधरेण ।।6.112.12।।

parākramotsāhavijṛmbhitārcirniḥśvāsadhūmassvabalapratāpḥ | pratāpavānsamyatirākṣasāgnirvirvāpitorāmapayodhareṇa ||6.112.12||

Translation

पराक्रमोत्साहविजृम्भितार्चिः prowess and exceeding energy as flames, निःश्वासधूमः sighs as smoke, स्वबलप्रतापः own strength as heat, सम्यति in the battlefield, प्रतापवान् endowed with prowess, राक्षसाग्नि: fire of Rakshasa, रामपयोधरेण by the rainy cloud in the shape of Rama, निर्वापितः extinguished

Meaning

"The prowess and exceeding energy of Ravana as flames, his sighs as smoke, his own strength as heat, endowed with might, that fire of Rakshasa has been extinguished by the rainy cloud in the shape of Rama in the battlefield."

YK-112-13Yuddha Kanda 112.13

सिंहरक्षलाङ्गूलककुद्विषाणःपराभिजिद्गन्धनगन्धहस्ती । रक्षोवृषश्चापलकर्णचक्षुःक्षितीश्वरव्याघ्रहतोऽवसन्नः ।।6.112.13।।

siṃharakṣalāṅgūlakakudviṣāṇḥparābhijidgandhanagandhahastī | rakṣovṛṣaścāpalakarṇacakṣuḥkṣitīśvaravyāghrahato'vasannḥ ||6.112.13||

Translation

सिंहर्क्षलाङ्गूलककुद्विषाणः Rakshasas as tails, humps, and horns, पराभिजित् the conqueror of its enemies, गन्धनगन्धहस्ती in pride like elephant in rut, चापकर्णचक्षुः animality as ears and eyes, रक्षोवृषः the bull in the form of Rakshasa, क्षितीश्वरव्याघ्रहतः tiger in the form of Rama master of the earth, अवसन्नः gone off

Meaning

"Rakshasas who followed as tails, humps and horns, Ravana the conquerors of enemies, like elephants in pride, animality as ears and eyes, the bull in the form of Rakshasa Ravana was killed by Rama, the master of earth in the form of tiger."

YK-112-14Yuddha Kanda 112.14

वदन्तंहेतुमद्वाक्यंपरिदृष्टार्थनिश्चयम् । रामःशोकसमाविष्टमित्युवाचविभीषणम् ।।6.112.14।।

vadantṃhetumadvākyṃparidṛṣṭārthaniścayam | rāmḥśokasamāviṣṭamityuvācavibhīṣaṇam ||6.112.14||

Translation

रामः Rama, वदन्तम् countenance, शोकसमाविष्टम् overcome by sorrow, विभीषणम् Vibheeshana, हेतुमत् with reason, परिदृष्टार्थनिश्चयम् determined opinion, वाक्यम् words, इति thus, उवाच spoke

Meaning

Thus spoke Rama to Vibheeshana, who was overcome with sorrow and speaking with reason, his determined opinion.

YK-112-15Yuddha Kanda 112.15

नायंविनष्टोनिश्चेष्टस्समरेचण्डविक्रमः । अत्युन्नतमहोत्साहःपतितोऽयमशङ्कितः ।।6.112.15।।

nāyṃvinaṣṭoniśceṣṭassamarecaṇḍavikramḥ | atyunnatamahotsāhḥpatito'yamaśaṅkitḥ ||6.112.15||

Translation

अयम् this, निश्चेष्टः without power, न विनष्टः not destroyed, समरे in war, चण्डविक्रमः of terrible prowess, अयम् this, अत्युन्नतमहोत्साहः extraordinary enthusiasm, अशङ्कितः without any fear, पतितः fallen

Meaning

"This Ravana is not destroyed without power in war. He is of terrible prowess, of extraordinary enthusiasm and fought without any fear and fallen."

YK-112-16Yuddha Kanda 112.16

नैवंविनष्टाःशोच्यन्तेक्षत्रधर्मव्यवस्थिताः । वृधदिमाशंसमानायेनिपतन्तिरणाजिरे ।।6.112.16।।

naivṃvinaṣṭāḥśocyantekṣatradharmavyavasthitāḥ | vṛdhadimāśṃsamānāyenipatantiraṇājire ||6.112.16||

Translation

ये those who, क्षत्रधर्मव्यवस्थिताः kings who follow duty steadfast, वृधदिम् desiring advancement, अशंसमानाः fearless, रणाजिरे in the battlefield, निपतन्ति fallen, विनष्टाः lost, एवम् in that way, न शोच्यन्ते not to be mourned

Meaning

"Those kings who follow duty steadfast, desiring advancement, fearless in the battlefield, who die in that way should not be mourned."

YK-112-17Yuddha Kanda 112.17

येनसेन्द्रास्त्रयोलोकास्त्रासितायुधिधीमता । तस्मिन्कालसमायुक्ते न कालःपरिशोचितुम् ।।6.112.17।।

yenasendrāstrayolokāstrāsitāyudhidhīmatā | tasminkālasamāyukte na kālḥpariśocitum ||6.112.17||

Translation

धीमता wise, येन being, युधि war, सेन्द्राः Indra, त्रयः three, लोकाः worlds, त्रासिताः fear, तस्मिन् his, कालसमायुक्ते brought under the sway of time, परिशोचितुम् to grieve, कालः time, न not

Meaning

"He who is wise, and the three worlds fear him, including Indra, the Lord of gods, when brought under the sway of death according to timespirit, should not be mourned."

YK-112-18Yuddha Kanda 112.18

नैकान्तविजयोयुद्धेभूतपूर्वःकदाचन । परैराहन्यतेवीरःपरान्वाहन्तिसंयुगे ।।6.112.18।।

naikāntavijayoyuddhebhūtapūrvḥkadācana | parairāhanyatevīrḥparānvāhantisṃyuge ||6.112.18||

Translation

कदाचन not only that, युद्धे in war, एकान्तविजयः victorious alone, न भूतपूर्वः now or before, वीरः heroic, संयुगे in war, परैः enemy, हन्यतेवा will kill, परान् by enemy, हन्तिवा be killed

Meaning

"Not only that, in war, he will only will be victorious is not true now or before. Hero may kill the enemy or will be killed by the enemy."

YK-112-19Yuddha Kanda 112.19

इयंहिपूर्वैस्सन्दिष्टागतिःक्षत्रियसम्मता । क्षत्रियोनिहतंसङ्ख्ये न शोच्यइतिनिश्चयः ।।6.112.19।।

iyṃhipūrvaissandiṣṭāgatiḥkṣatriyasammatā | kṣatriyonihatṃsaṅkhye na śocyaitiniścayḥ ||6.112.19||

Translation

इयम् this, पूर्वैः in the past, सन्दिष्टा in battle, क्षत्रियसम्मता acceptable for ancient kings, गतिः course, सङ्ख्ये action, निहतः killed, क्षत्रियः king, न शोच्यः not mourned, इति this, निश्चयः is true

Meaning

"This course has been practised in the past by ancient kings for those killed in war. Warrior killed in war is not to be mourned', is true."

YK-112-20Yuddha Kanda 112.20

तदेवंनिश्चयंदृष्टवातत्त्वमास्थायविज्वरः । यदिहानन्तरंकार्यंकल्प्यंतदनुचिन्तय ।।6.112.20।।

tadevṃniścayṃdṛṣṭavātattvamāsthāyavijvarḥ | yadihānantarṃkāryṃkalpyṃtadanucintaya ||6.112.20||

Translation

तत् that, एवम् in that way, निश्चयम् determined, दृष्टवा seeing, तत्त्वम् in principle, आस्थाय considering, विज्वरः freed from grief, इह here, अनन्तरम् later, यत् that which, कार्यम् action, कल्प्यम् to be done, तत् that, अनुचिन्तय is required

Meaning

In principle, in that way, decide the action, freed from grief, considering what action is required."

YK-112-21Yuddha Kanda 112.21

मुक्तवाक्यंविक्रान्तंराजपुत्रंविभीषणः । उवाचशोकसन्तप्तोभ्रातुर्हितमनन्तरम् ।।6.112.21।।

muktavākyṃvikrāntṃrājaputrṃvibhīṣaṇḥ | uvācaśokasantaptobhrāturhitamanantaram ||6.112.21||

Translation

उक्तवाक्यम् having spoken like that, विक्रान्तम् valiant, तंराजपुत्रम् prince, शोकसन्तप्तः immersed in grief, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, अनन्तरम् after that, भ्रातुः brother, हितम् good, उवाच spoke

Meaning

Having spoken that way by the valiant prince to Vibheeshana, who was immersed in grief, spoke to Rama for the good of his brother.

YK-112-22Yuddha Kanda 112.22

योऽयंविमर्देष्वविभग्नपूर्वःसुरैस्समस्थेरपिवासवेन । भवन्तमासाद्यरणेविभग्नोवेलामिवासाद्ययथासमुद्रः ।।6.112.22।।

yo'yṃvimardeṣvavibhagnapūrvḥsuraissamastherapivāsavena | bhavantamāsādyaraṇevibhagnovelāmivāsādyayathāsamudrḥ ||6.112.22||

Translation

यः he who, अयम् this, विमर्देषु in battle, स्समस्थेरपि combined together in trial of strength, सुरैरपि even gods, वासवेन by Indra, भग्नपूर्वः not defeated, भवन्तम् by you, आसाद्य routed, वेलाम् flow, आसाद्य routed, समुद्रःयथा like the ocean, रणे in war, विभग्नः divides

Meaning

"He who has not been defeated in battle by even gods or Indra combined together in a trial of strength has been routed by you like the flow of the ocean divides on reaching the shore."

YK-112-23Yuddha Kanda 112.23

अनेनदत्तानिवनीपकेषुभुक्ताश्चभोगानिभृताश्चभृत्याः । धनानिमित्रेषुसमर्पितानिवैराण्यमित्रेषुनिपातितानि ।।6.112.23।।

anenadattānivanīpakeṣubhuktāścabhogānibhṛtāścabhṛtyāḥ | dhanānimitreṣusamarpitānivairāṇyamitreṣunipātitāni ||6.112.23||

Translation

अनेन many, वनीपकेषु mendicants, दत्तानि bestowed, भोगाश्च gifts, भुक्ताः nurtured, भृत्याः dependants निभृताः filled with, धनानि wealth, मित्रेषु to friends, समर्पितानि given, वैराणि grudges, अमित्रेषु to enemies, निपातितानि destroyed

Meaning

"He bestowed gifts to mendicants, nurtured dependents, filled his friends with wealth, and held grudges against enemies and destroyed them."

YK-112-24Yuddha Kanda 112.24

एषोहिताग्निश्च:महातपाश्चवेदान्तगःकर्मसुचाग्य्रशूरः । एतस्ययत्प्रेतगतस्यकृत्यंतत्कर्तुमिच्छामितवप्रसादात् ।।6.112.24।।

eṣohitāgniśca:mahātapāścavedāntagḥkarmasucāgyraśūrḥ | etasyayatpretagatasyakṛtyṃtatkartumicchāmitavaprasādāt ||6.112.24||

Translation

एषः he, हिताग्नि: maintained sacred fire, महातपाश्च practised austerities, वेदान्तगः mastered vedas, कर्मसु च even in doing rituals, अग्रशूरः foremost, प्रेतगतस्य departed soul, एतस्य to him, कृत्यम् to do the rituals, तव your, प्रसादात् permission, कर्तुम् will do, इच्छामि I desire

Meaning

"He maintained sacrificial fire and practised austerities. He mastered vedas and was even doing rituals. To the foremost brother's departed soul, I desire your permission to do the rituals."
