SK-7-1Sundara Kanda 7.1

स वेश्मजालं बलवान् ददर्श व्यासक्तवैडूर्यसुवर्णजालम्। यथा महत् प्रावृषि मेघजालं विद्युत्पिनद्धं सविहङ्गजालम्।।5.7.1।।

sa veśmajālṃ balavān dadarśa vyāsaktavaiḍūryasuvarṇajālam| yathā mahat prāvṛṣi meghajālṃ vidyutpinaddhṃ savihaṅgajālam||5.7.1||

Translation

बलवान् powerful, सः he, व्यासक्तवैडूर्यसुवर्णजालम् fitted with golden lattices encrusted with vaidurya, प्रावृषि in the rainy season, विद्युत्पिनद्धम् with streaks of lightning, सविहङ्गजालम् with flocks of birds, महत् great, मेघजालं यथा like the abode of clouds, वेश्मजालम् conglomeration of houses, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Powerful Hanuman beheld the conglomeration of buildings with golden lattices encrusted with vaidurya, with flocks of birds comparable to a complex of clouds pierced by lightning during rainy season.

SK-7-2Sundara Kanda 7.2

निवेशनानां विविधाश्च शालाः प्रधानशङ्खायुधचापशालाः। मनोहराश्चापि पुनर्विशालाः ददर्श वेश्माद्रिषु चन्द्रशालाः।।5.7.2।।

niveśanānāṃ vividhāśca śālāḥ pradhānaśaṅkhāyudhacāpaśālāḥ| manoharāścāpi punarviśālāḥ dadarśa veśmādriṣu candraśālāḥ||5.7.2||

Translation

निवेशनानाम् of the houses, विविधाः several, शालाः halls, प्रधानशङ्खायुधचापशालाः for storing valuable conches, weapons and bows, पुनः again, वेश्माद्रिषु on top of attics on the houses, मनोहराः delightful, विशालाः spacious, चन्द्रशालाः terraces, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Attached to the spacious halls of the houses, were storehouses for valuable conches, weapons, bows and arrows. On the top of the attics on these mansions, were large and delightful terraces open to the Moon.

SK-7-3Sundara Kanda 7.3

गृहाणि नानावसुराजितानि देवासुरैश्चापि सुपूजितानि। सर्वैश्च दोषैः परिवर्जितानि कपिर्ददर्श स्वबलार्जितानि।।5.7.3।।

gṛhāṇi nānāvasurājitāni devāsuraiścāpi supūjitāni| sarvaiśca doṣaiḥ parivarjitāni kapirdadarśa svabalārjitāni||5.7.3||

Translation

कपिः monkey, नानावसुराजितानि various kinds treasures, देवासुरैश्चापि even by gods and demons, सुपूजितानि worshipped by, सर्वैः by all, दोषैः defects, परिवर्जितानि devoid, स्वबलार्जितानि earned by his might, गृहाणि houses, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

The monkey saw numerous kinds of treasures, cherished by gods and demons, which were won by Ravana's might.

SK-7-4Sundara Kanda 7.4

तानि प्रयत्नाभिसमाहितानि मयेन साक्षादिव निर्मितानि। महीतले सर्वगुणोत्तराणि ददर्श लङ्काधिपतेर्गृहाणि।।5.7.4।।

tāni prayatnābhisamāhitāni mayena sākṣādiva nirmitāni| mahītale sarvaguṇottarāṇi dadarśa laṅkādhipatergṛhāṇi||5.7.4||

Translation

तानि those, प्रयत्नाभिसमाहितानि collected with great care and effort, साक्षात् directly, मयेन by Maya, निर्मितानीव as though built, महीतले on earth, सर्वगुणोत्तराणि of excellent quality, लङ्काधिपतेः of the lord of Lanka, गृहाणि mansions, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

The mansions of the lord of Lanka built with great care and effort on earth were by all means excellent and appeared as though built personally by Maya (the divine architect wellknown for magical skills).

SK-7-5Sundara Kanda 7.5

ततो ददर्शोछ्रचितमेघरूपं मनोहरं काञ्चनचारुरूपम्। रक्षोऽधिपस्यात्मबलानुरूपं गृहोत्तमं ह्यप्रतिरूपरूपम्।।5.7.5।।

tato dadarśochracitamegharūpṃ manoharṃ kāñcanacārurūpam| rakṣo'dhipasyātmabalānurūpṃ gṛhottamṃ hyapratirūparūpam||5.7.5||

Translation

ततः then, उछ्रचितमेघरूपम् appearing like a towering cloud, मनोहरम् soulcaptivating, काञ्चनचारुरूपम् golden palace possessing splendour of molten gold, अप्रतिरूपरूपम् matchless, आत्मबलानुरूपम् worthy of the might of Ravana, रक्षोधिपस्य of the lord of demons, गृहोत्तमम् magnificent palace, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Hanuman beheld the magnificent and soulcaptivating palace possessing the splendour of molten gold. Of matchless beauty, it looked like a towering cloud worthy of the might of Ravana, the lord of ogresses.

SK-7-6Sundara Kanda 7.6

महीतले स्वर्गमिव प्रकीर्णं श्रिया ज्वलन्तं बहुरत्नकीर्णम्। नानातरूणां कुसुमावकीर्णं गिरेरिवाग्रं रजसावकीर्णम्।।5.7.6।।

mahītale svargamiva prakīrṇṃ śriyā jvalantṃ bahuratnakīrṇam| nānātarūṇāṃ kusumāvakīrṇṃ girerivāgrṃ rajasāvakīrṇam||5.7.6||

Translation

महीतले on earth, प्रकीर्णम् scattered, स्वर्गमिव like heaven, श्रिया with splendour, ज्वलन्तम् while glittering, बहुरत्नकीर्णम् with many gems, नानातरूणाम् of all kinds of trees, कुसुमावकीर्णम् scattered with flowers, रजसा with dust, अवकीर्णम् covered, गिरेः mountain, अग्रमिव like the peak.

Meaning

It appeared splendid like a scattered piece of heaven on earth, glittering with countless gems. It looked like a mountain peak covered with pollen of flowers dropped from all kinds of trees.

SK-7-7Sundara Kanda 7.7

नारीप्रवेकैरिव दीप्यमानं तटिद्भिरम्भोदवदर्च्यमानम्। हंसप्रवेकैरिव वाह्यमानं श्रिया युतं खे सुकृतां विमानम्।।5.7.7।।

nārīpravekairiva dīpyamānṃ taṭidbhirambhodavadarcyamānam| hṃsapravekairiva vāhyamānṃ śriyā yutṃ khe sukṛtāṃ vimānam||5.7.7||

Translation

नारीप्रवेकैः by resplendent women,दीप्यमानमिव as if lit up,तटिद्भिः with lightning, अम्भोदवत् like a raincloud, अर्च्यमानम् worshipped, हंसप्रवेकैः borne by swans, वाह्यमानम् इव as if being drawn by, श्रिया auspicious, युतम् endowed, खे in the sky, सुकृताम् royal, विमानम् aerial chariot.

Meaning

The aerial chariot was lit up by resplendent women just as a raincloud dazzles with flashes of lightning. It was auspicious, worthy of worship. It looked as if it was drawn by royal swans in the sky.

SK-7-8Sundara Kanda 7.8

यथा नगाग्रं बहुधातुचित्रं यथा नभश्च ग्रहचन्द्रचित्रम्। ददर्शयुक्तीकृतमेघचित्रं विमानरत्नं बहुरत्नचित्रम्।।5.7.8।।

yathā nagāgrṃ bahudhātucitrṃ yathā nabhaśca grahacandracitram| dadarśayuktīkṛtameghacitrṃ vimānaratnṃ bahuratnacitram||5.7.8||

Translation

युक्तीकृतमेघचित्रम् mass of colourful clouds, ग्रहचन्द्रचित्रम् looking colourful with planets and Moon, नभः यथा like the sky, बहुरत्नचित्रम् colourful on account of gems encrusted, बहुधातुचित्रम् colourful on account of many minerals, नगाग्रं यथा like the peak of a mountain, विमानरत्नम् jewel of a chariot, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

A jewel among aerial chariots, it looked colourful with many gems beset. It appeared like the summit of a mountain decorated with the colours of minerals, like the sky bespangled with planets and the Moon and like a mass of multicoloured clouds adorned by a rainbow.

SK-7-9Sundara Kanda 7.9

मही कृता पर्वतराजिपूर्णा शैलाः कृता वृक्षवितानपूर्णाः। वृक्षाः कृताः पुष्पवितानपूर्णाः पुष्पं कृतं केसरपत्रपूर्णम्।।5.7.9।।

mahī kṛtā parvatarājipūrṇā śailāḥ kṛtā vṛkṣavitānapūrṇāḥ| vṛkṣāḥ kṛtāḥ puṣpavitānapūrṇāḥ puṣpṃ kṛtṃ kesarapatrapūrṇam||5.7.9||

Translation

मही earth, पर्वतराजिपूर्णा filled with mountain ranges, कृता drawn, शैलाः mountains, वृक्षवितानपूर्णाः filled with a canopy of trees, कृताः drawn, वृक्षाः trees, पुष्पवितानपूर्णाः filled with a canopy of flowers, कृताः drawn on it, पुष्पम् flowers, केसरपत्रपूर्णम् filled with petals and filaments, कृतम् drawn.

Meaning

The whole earth had been picturised on it. It was filled with rows of mountains and a canopy of trees all over. The trees were filled with lovely flowers with petals and filaments drawn on them.

SK-7-10Sundara Kanda 7.10

कृतानि वेश्मानि च पाण्डुराणि तथा सुपुष्पाण्यपि पुष्कराणि। पुनश्च पद्मानि सकेसराणि धन्यानि चित्राणि तथा वनानि।।5.7.10।।

kṛtāni veśmāni ca pāṇḍurāṇi tathā supuṣpāṇyapi puṣkarāṇi| punaśca padmāni sakesarāṇi dhanyāni citrāṇi tathā vanāni||5.7.10||

Translation

पाण्डुराणि white in colour, वेश्मानि च houses, कृतानि drawn, तथा so also, सुपुष्पाणि with beautiful flowers, पुष्कराणि च ponds also, पुनश्च again, स केसराणि having filaments, पद्मानि lotuses, तथा so also, धन्यानि complete, चित्राणि paintings, वनानि gardens.

Meaning

There were pictures of mansions white in colour and pools of crystalclear water filled with lovely flowers. There were pictures of beautiful lotuses drawn on it.

SK-7-11Sundara Kanda 7.11

पुष्पाह्वयं नामविराजमानं रत्नप्रभाभिश्च विवर्धमानम्। वेश्मोत्तमानामपि चोच्यमानं महाकपिस्तत्र महाविमानम्।।5.7.11।।

puṣpāhvayṃ nāmavirājamānṃ ratnaprabhābhiśca vivardhamānam| veśmottamānāmapi cocyamānṃ mahākapistatra mahāvimānam||5.7.11||

Translation

तत्र there, महाकपिः great vanara, पुष्पाह्वयम् Pushpaka chariot by name, नामविराजमानम् splendid indeed, रत्नप्रभाभिः glitter of gems, विवर्धमानम् glowing, वेश्मोत्तमानामपि of magnificent mansions, उच्यमानम् tall, महाविमानम् great chariot.

Meaning

There, the great Hanuman indeed saw a splendid chariot called Pushpaka. It was glowing with glittering gems. Taller than the biggest mansion, it was a great chariot.

SK-7-12Sundara Kanda 7.12

कृताश्च वैडूर्यमया विहङ्गाः रूप्यप्रवालैश्च तथा विहङ्गाः। चित्राश्च नानावसुभिर्भुजङ्गाः जात्यानुरूपास्तुरगाः शुभाङ्गाः।।5.7.12।।

kṛtāśca vaiḍūryamayā vihaṅgāḥ rūpyapravālaiśca tathā vihaṅgāḥ| citrāśca nānāvasubhirbhujaṅgāḥ jātyānurūpāsturagāḥ śubhāṅgāḥ||5.7.12||

Translation

वैडूर्यमयाः made of vaidurya, विहङ्गाः birds, तथा similarly, रूप्यप्रवालैश्च made of silver and corals, विहङ्गाः birds, नानावसुभिः with various gems, चित्राः colourful, भुजङ्गाः serpents, जात्याः due to there good breeding, अनुरूपाः similar, शुभाङ्गाः with auspicious limbs, तुरगाः horses, कृताः drawn.

Meaning

Inside were birds made of vaidurya, silver and corals. There were colourful serpents made of various gems, and highclass horses of exquisite limbs drawn.

SK-7-13Sundara Kanda 7.13

प्रवालजाम्बूनदपुष्पपक्षाः सलीलमावर्जितजिह्मपक्षाः। कामस्य साक्षादिव भान्ति पक्षाः कृता विहङ्गाः सुमुखाः सुपक्षाः।।5.7.13।।

pravālajāmbūnadapuṣpapakṣāḥ salīlamāvarjitajihmapakṣāḥ| kāmasya sākṣādiva bhānti pakṣāḥ kṛtā vihaṅgāḥ sumukhāḥ supakṣāḥ||5.7.13||

Translation

प्रवालजाम्बूनदपुष्पपक्षाः wings engraved with corals and gold, सुपक्षाः having beautiful wings, सलीलम् in a sportive way, आवर्जितजिह्मपक्षाः with their artificial wings bent down (tossed), विहङ्गाः birds, कृताः were drawn, साक्षात् truly, कामस्य cupid's, पक्षाः इव like wings, भान्ति seemed.

Meaning

It had curved figures of birds with beautiful wings carved out of corals and gold The wings were shining as if they were really the wings of allies of Cupid, the god of love.

SK-7-14Sundara Kanda 7.14

नियुज्यमानास्तु गजाः सुहस्ताः सकेसराश्चोत्पलपत्रहस्ताः। बभूवदेवी च कृता सुहस्ता लक्ष्मी स्तथा पद्मिनि पद्महस्ता।।5.7.14।।

niyujyamānāstu gajāḥ suhastāḥ sakesarāścotpalapatrahastāḥ| babhūvadevī ca kṛtā suhastā lakṣmī stathā padmini padmahastā||5.7.14||

Translation

पद्मिनि in a lotuspond, सुहस्ता having beautiful hands, सकेसराश्च with filaments, उत्पलपत्रहस्ताः blue lotuses by their trunk carried, लक्ष्मीः goddess of wealth, नियुज्यमानास्तु stationed in place, गजाः elephants, तथा similarly, पद्महस्ता holding a lotus in hand, सुहस्ता of beautiful hand, देवी च goddess, कृता drawn, बभूव appeared.

Meaning

He saw on it lotus ponds, artificial elephants with shapely trunks, offering to Laxmi who herself was a lotus, holding in her beautiful hands blue lotuses shining with filaments.

SK-7-15Sundara Kanda 7.15

इतीव तद्गृहमभिगम्य शोभनम् सविस्मयो नगमिव चारुशोभनम्। पुनश्च तत्परमसुगन्धि सुन्दरम् हिमात्यये नगमिव चारुकन्दरम्।।5.7.15।।

itīva tadgṛhamabhigamya śobhanam savismayo nagamiva cāruśobhanam| punaśca tatparamasugandhi sundaram himātyaye nagamiva cārukandaram||5.7.15||

Translation

इतीव in that way, शोभनम् auspicious, चारुशोभनम् beautifully fashioned, नगमिव like a mountain, तद्गृहम् that palace, अभिगम्य having reached, सविस्मयः wonderstruck, परमसुगन्धि highly fragrant, सुन्दरम् beautiful, हिमात्यये at the end of winter, चारुकन्दरम् having beautiful caves, नगमिव like mountain, तत् that, पुनश्च once again.

Meaning

Thus he reached the auspicious palace appearing like a beautiful mountain and stood wonderstruck. Once again he looked at that beautiful palace which appeared like a mountain with lovely caverns in spring time filled with wonderful fragrance

SK-7-16Sundara Kanda 7.16

ततः स तां कपिरभिपत्य पूजितां चरन् पुरीं दशमुखबाहुपालिताम्। अदृश्य तां जनकसुतां सुपूजितां सुदुःखितः पतिगुणवेगवर्जिताम्।।5.7.16।।

tatḥ sa tāṃ kapirabhipatya pūjitāṃ caran purīṃ daśamukhabāhupālitām| adṛśya tāṃ janakasutāṃ supūjitāṃ suduḥkhitḥ patiguṇavegavarjitām||5.7.16||

Translation

ततः then, सः कपिः monkey, पूजिताम् worshipped, दशमुखबाहुपालिताम् ruled by the arms of the tenheaded king, तां पुरीम् that city, अभिपत्य having reached, चरन् while moving about, सुपूजिताम् venerable, पतिगुणवेगवर्जिताम् who was deprived of the benefit of her husband's virtuous conduct, तां जनकसुताम् that Janaka's daughter Sita, अदृश्य unable to find, सुदुःखितः was deeply sorrowful.

Meaning

Then Hanuman moved about that cherished city ruled by the strength of arms of the tenheaded king. Unable to find venerable Sita, who was deprived of the benefit of her husband's virtuous proximity, he became deeply sad.

SK-7-17Sundara Kanda 7.17

ततस्तदा बहुविधभावितात्मनः कृतात्मनो जनकसुतां सुवर्त्मनः। अपश्यतोऽभवदतिदुःखितं मनः सुचक्षुषः प्रविचरतो महात्मनः।।5.7.17।।

tatastadā bahuvidhabhāvitātmanḥ kṛtātmano janakasutāṃ suvartmanḥ| apaśyato'bhavadatiduḥkhitṃ manḥ sucakṣuṣḥ pravicarato mahātmanḥ||5.7.17||

Translation

ततः from there, तदा then, बहुविधभावितात्मनः thinking of many things in his mind, कृतात्मनः of a great soul, सुवर्त्मनः of the followers of righteous path, सुचक्षुषः foresighted, प्रविचरतः while he moved, जनकसुताम् daughter of Janaka, अपश्यत: unable to find, महात्मनः of the great self, मनः mind, अतिदुःखितम् very distressed, अभवत् became.

Meaning

Unable to find Sita, the disciplined and foresighted Hanuman, who always kept the righteous path, felt distressed while moving about, his mind oppressed by all kinds of thought. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे सप्तमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the seventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
