SK-63-1Sundara Kanda 63.1

ततो मूर्ध्ना निपतितं वानरं वानरर्षभः। दृष्ट्वैवोद्विग्नहृदयो वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह।।5.63.1।।

tato mūrdhnā nipatitṃ vānarṃ vānararṣabhḥ| dṛṣṭvaivodvignahṛdayo vākyametaduvāca ha||5.63.1||

Translation

ततः then, वानरर्षभः bull among vanaras, मूर्ध्ना forehead, निपतितम् prostrated, वानरम् vanara, Dadhimukha, दृष्ट्वैव as soon as he saw, उद्विग्नहृदयः anxious at heart, एतत् these, वाक्यम् words, उवाच ह spoke.

Meaning

Feeling anxious on seeing Dadhimukha touching his feet with his forehead, Sugriva, the bull among vanaras said:

SK-63-2Sundara Kanda 63.2

उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ कस्मात्त्वं पादयोः पतितो मम। अभयं ते भवेद्वीर सर्वमेवाभिधीयताम्।।5.63.2।।

uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha kasmāttvṃ pādayoḥ patito mama| abhayṃ te bhavedvīra sarvamevābhidhīyatām||5.63.2||

Translation

वीर hero, उत्तिष्ठ उत्तिष्ठ get up, get up, त्वम् you, कस्मात् why, मम my, पादयोः feet, पतितः fallen, ते to you, अभयम् give you protection, भवेत् you be, सर्वमेव from all, अभिधीयताम् you may tell.

Meaning

"O heroic Dadhimukha, get up. Tell me why you have fallen at my feet. I give you protection from all.

SK-63-3Sundara Kanda 63.3

स तु विश्वासितस्तेन सुग्रीवेण महात्मना। उत्थाय सुमहाप्राज्ञो वाक्यं दधिमुखोऽब्रवीत्।।5.63.3।।

sa tu viśvāsitastena sugrīveṇa mahātmanā| utthāya sumahāprājño vākyṃ dadhimukho'bravīt||5.63.3||

Translation

महात्मना great self, तेन सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, विश्वासितः given assurance, सुमहाप्राज्ञः very wise, सः दधिमुखः that Dadhimukha, उत्थाय got up, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

When great Sugriva gave assurance to wise Dadhimukha, he got up and said:

SK-63-4Sundara Kanda 63.4

नैवर्क्षरजसा राजन्न त्वया नापि वालिना। वनं निसृष्टपूर्वं हि भक्षितं तच्च वानरैः।।5.63.4।।

naivarkṣarajasā rājanna tvayā nāpi vālinā| vanṃ nisṛṣṭapūrvṃ hi bhakṣitṃ tacca vānaraiḥ||5.63.4||

Translation

राजन् O king, वनम् garden, ऋक्षरजसा in Riksharaja's time, नैव निसृष्टपूर्वं हि or even before, त्वया your time, न not, वालिनापि even at the time of Vali, न not, तच्च accessible to go, वानरैः vanaras, भक्षितम् finished eating.

Meaning

"O king in your time or even before, during the time of Vali, that (Madhuvanam) was forbidden for entry. Now it has been laid waste by the trespassing vanaras.

SK-63-5Sundara Kanda 63.5

एभिः प्रधर्षिताश्चैव वानरा वनरक्षिभिः। मधून्यचिन्तयित्वेमान् भक्षयन्ति पिबन्ति च।।5.63.5।।

ebhiḥ pradharṣitāścaiva vānarā vanarakṣibhiḥ| madhūnyacintayitvemān bhakṣayanti pibanti ca||5.63.5||

Translation

एभिः they also, वनरक्षिभिः garden guards, प्रधर्षिताश्चैव even though resisted, वानराः vanaras, इमान् them, अचिन्तयित्वा not cared for, मधूनि honey, भक्षयन्ति finished eating, पिबन्ति च and drinking.

Meaning

"Even though the garden guards forcibly tried to prevent them they did not care and have devoured all the honey.

SK-63-6Sundara Kanda 63.6

शिष्टमत्रापविध्यन्ति भक्षयन्ति तथापरे। निवार्यमाणास्ते सर्वे भ्रुवो वै दर्शयन्ति हि।।5.63.6।।

śiṣṭamatrāpavidhyanti bhakṣayanti tathāpare| nivāryamāṇāste sarve bhruvo vai darśayanti hi||5.63.6||

Translation

शिष्टम् left over, अत्र there, अपविध्यन्ति thrown off, तथा similarly, अपरे others, भक्षयन्ति eating, ते सर्वे all, निवार्यमाणाः when we prevented, भ्रुवः eyebrows, दर्शयन्ति च raising to show (a sign of arrogance)

Meaning

"Some have thrown off the leftovers, when others were prevented from drinking off the honey, they raised their eyebrows (to show their grouch).

SK-63-7Sundara Kanda 63.7

इमे हि संरब्धतरास्तथा तैस्सम्प्रधर्षिताः। वारयन्तो वनात्तस्मात्क्रुद्धैर्वानरपुङ्गवैः।।5.63.7।।

ime hi sṃrabdhatarāstathā taissampradharṣitāḥ| vārayanto vanāttasmātkruddhairvānarapuṅgavaiḥ||5.63.7||

Translation

संरब्दतराः when enraged guards, तथा that way, तस्मात् from that, वनात् garden, वारयन्तः vanaras, इमे to go, क्रुद्धैः angry, तैः they, वानरपुङ्गवैः vanara leaders, सम्प्रधर्षिताः ill treated them.

Meaning

"When the guards asked the vanaras to leave the garden the enraged vanaras misbehaved with them.

SK-63-8Sundara Kanda 63.8

ततस्तैर्बहुभिर्वीरैर्वानरैर्वानरर्षभ। संरक्तनयनैः क्रोधाद्धरयः प्रविचालिताः।।5.63.8।।

tatastairbahubhirvīrairvānarairvānararṣabha| sṃraktanayanaiḥ krodhāddharayḥ pravicālitāḥ||5.63.8||

Translation

वानरर्षभ bull among vanaras, ततः then, क्रोधात् in fury, संरक्तनयनैः redeyed, वीरैः heroes, बहुभिः many, तैः them, वानरैः vanara guards, हरयः monkeys, प्रविचालिताः chased.

Meaning

"O Sugriva the vanara guards were chased away by the many heroic monkeys, angry and redeyed.

SK-63-9Sundara Kanda 63.9

पाणिभिर्निहताः केचित्केचिज्जानुभिराहताः। प्रकृष्टाश्च यथाकामं देवमार्गं च दर्शिताः।।5.63.9।।

pāṇibhirnihatāḥ kecitkecijjānubhirāhatāḥ| prakṛṣṭāśca yathākāmṃ devamārgṃ ca darśitāḥ||5.63.9||

Translation

केचित् some, पाणिभिः with the hands, निहताः struck, केचित् some, जानुभिः on the knees, आहताः beaten, यथाकामम् as they liked, प्रकृष्टाः dragged, देवमार्गम् private parts, दर्शिताः च showed.

Meaning

"Some were struck with hands, some beaten on their knees and were dragged as they liked and showed up their private parts.

SK-63-10Sundara Kanda 63.10

एवमेते हताश्शूरास्त्वयि तिष्ठति भर्तरि। कृत्स्नं मधुवनं चैव प्रकामं तैः प्रभक्ष्यते।।5.63.10।।

evamete hatāśśūrāstvayi tiṣṭhati bhartari| kṛtsnṃ madhuvanṃ caiva prakāmṃ taiḥ prabhakṣyate||5.63.10||

Translation

त्वयि you, भर्तरि when you are the king, तिष्ठति staying, एते these, शूराः heroes, एवम् in that way, हताः striking, तैः they, कृत्स्नम् on the earth, मधुवनं चैव Madhuvanam aslo, प्रकामम् at their will, प्रभक्ष्यते eating so.

Meaning

These heroes struck that way devoured the Madhuvanam on the earth at their will and devoured the honey even when you are there as king.

SK-63-11Sundara Kanda 63.11

एवं विज्ञाप्यमानं तं सुग्रीवं वानरर्षभम्। अपृच्छत्तं महाप्राज्ञो लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा।।5.63.11।।

evṃ vijñāpyamānṃ tṃ sugrīvṃ vānararṣabham| apṛcchattṃ mahāprājño lakṣmaṇḥ paravīrahā||5.63.11||

Translation

एवम् in that way, विज्ञाप्यमानम् having appealed, वानरर्षभम् bulls among vanaras, तं सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, परवीरहा killer of enemies, महाप्राज्ञः very learned, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, अपृच्छत् enquired.

Meaning

While Dadhimukha appealed thus to wise Sugriva, Lakshmana the killer of enemies happened to see them and enquired:

SK-63-12Sundara Kanda 63.12

किमयं वानरो राजन् वनपः प्रत्युपस्थितः। कं चार्थमभिनिर्दिश्य दुःखितो वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।5.63.12।।

kimayṃ vānaro rājan vanapḥ pratyupasthitḥ| kṃ cārthamabhinirdiśya duḥkhito vākyamabravīt||5.63.12||

Translation

राजन् O king, वनप: protector of the garden, अयं वानरः this vanara, किम् why, प्रत्युपस्थितः came here?, दुःखितः sad, कम् why, अर्थम् for what, अभिनिर्दिश्य what is he telling, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

"O king why has this protector of the garden come here? Why is he sad? What is he narrating, asked Lakshmana.

SK-63-13Sundara Kanda 63.13

एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवो लक्ष्मणेन महात्मना। लक्ष्मणं प्रत्युवाचेदं वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः।।5.63.13।।

evamuktastu sugrīvo lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā| lakṣmaṇṃ pratyuvācedṃ vākyṃ vākyaviśāradḥ||5.63.13||

Translation

महात्मना great prince, लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, एवम् in that way, उक्तः having spoken, वाक्यविशारदः proficient in speech, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, इदम् these, वाक्यम् words, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

Great prince Lakshmana thus said, Sugriva the proficient speaker replied:

SK-63-14Sundara Kanda 63.14

आर्य लक्ष्मण सम्प्राह वीरो दधिमुखः कपिः। अङ्गदप्रमुखैर्वीरैर्भक्षितं मधु वानरैः।।5.63.14।। विचित्य दक्षिणामाशामागतैर्हरिपुङ्गवैः।

ārya lakṣmaṇa samprāha vīro dadhimukhḥ kapiḥ| aṅgadapramukhairvīrairbhakṣitṃ madhu vānaraiḥ||5.63.14|| vicitya dakṣiṇāmāśāmāgatairharipuṅgavaiḥ|

Translation

आर्य O venerable one, लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, वीरः hero, कपिः monkey, दधिमुखः Dadhimukha, सम्प्राह to search, दक्षिणाम् southern, आशाम् hope, विचित्य having searched, आगतैः have come, हरिपुङ्गवैः monkey leaders, वीरैः heroic ones, अङ्गदप्रमुखैः Angada and others, वानरैः vanaras, मधु honey, भक्षितम् eaten.

Meaning

'O venerable Lakshmana Dadhimukha as complaining that the fruits and honey have been consumed by the vanara heroes, Angada and others who have come after their search for Sita in the southern direction.

SK-63-15-16Sundara Kanda 63.15–16 (युग्मम्)

नैषामकृत्यानामीदृशस्स्यादुपक्रमः।।5.63.15।। आगतैश्च प्रमथितं यथा मधुवनं हि तैः। धर्षितं च वनं कृत्स्नमुपयुक्तं च वानरैः।।5.63.16।।

naiṣāmakṛtyānāmīdṛśassyādupakramḥ||5.63.15|| āgataiśca pramathitṃ yathā madhuvanṃ hi taiḥ| dharṣitṃ ca vanṃ kṛtsnamupayuktṃ ca vānaraiḥ||5.63.16||

Translation

आगतैः having come, तैः those, वानरैः vanaras, मधुवनम् Madhuvanam, यथा that way, प्रमथितम् entered, कृत्स्नम् whole, वनम् garden, धर्षितम् broken, उपयुक्तं च right, एषाम् they that way, अकृतकृत्यानाम् if they had not accomplished their purpose, ईदृशः this way, उपक्रमः indulged, न स्यात् not done.

Meaning

"Those vanaras having entered Madhuvanam and broken the trees are quite right. Had they not accomplished their purpose they would not have indulged themselves that way.

SK-63-17Sundara Kanda 63.17

वनं यदाऽभिपन्नास्ते साधितं कर्म वानरैः। दृष्टा देवी न सन्देहो न चान्येन हनूमता।।5.63.17।।

vanṃ yadā'bhipannāste sādhitṃ karma vānaraiḥ| dṛṣṭā devī na sandeho na cānyena hanūmatā||5.63.17||

Translation

ते they, यदा like that, वनम् garden, अभिपन्नाः entered, वानरैं कर्म their duty, साधितम् had done, देवी queen, दृष्टा saw, सन्देहः doubt, न no, अन्येन others, न not, हनुमता Hanuman.

Meaning

"If they have trespassed into the garden that way, they might have done their duty. No doubt, Hanuman alone among them might have seen Sita.

SK-63-18Sundara Kanda 63.18

न ह्यन्यस्साधने हेतुः कर्मणोऽस्य हनूमतः। कार्यसिद्धिर्मतिश्चैव तस्मिन्वानरपुङ्गवे।।5.63.18।। व्यवसायश्च वीर्यं च श्रुतं चापि प्रतिष्ठितम्।

na hyanyassādhane hetuḥ karmaṇo'sya hanūmatḥ| kāryasiddhirmatiścaiva tasminvānarapuṅgave||5.63.18|| vyavasāyaśca vīryṃ ca śrutṃ cāpi pratiṣṭhitam|

Translation

अस्य कर्मणः that duty, साधने capacity, हनूमतः Hanuman, अन्यः others, हेतुः the reason being, न हि not indeed, कार्यसिद्धि: capacity to accomplish, मतिश्चैव even wisdom, व्यवसायश्च even strenuous effort, वीर्यं च and virility, श्रुतं चापि enthusiasm, तस्मिन् for him, वानरपुङ्गवे to only the foremost of the monkys, प्रतिष्ठितम् are wellestablished.

Meaning

"Hanuman alone has the ability to do it, the reason being he has the capacity the wisdom, streneous effort, virility and enthusiasm to accomplish it. These attributes are wellestablished in him.

SK-63-19Sundara Kanda 63.19

जाम्बवान्यत्र नेता स्यादङ्गदश्च महाबलः।।5.63.19।। हनुमांश्चाप्यधिष्ठाता न तस्य गतिरन्यथा।

jāmbavānyatra netā syādaṅgadaśca mahābalḥ||5.63.19|| hanumāṃścāpyadhiṣṭhātā na tasya gatiranyathā|

Translation

यत्र where, जाम्बवान् Jambavan, नेता is the leader, स्यात् remains, महाबलः strong, अङ्गदश्च Angada also, हनुमांश्च and Hanuman, अधिष्ठाता directing, तस्य that, गतिः will be done, अन्यथा otherwise, न not.

Meaning

Where Jambavan, Angada and Hanuman are leaders directing the task of the army it must have been accomplished.

SK-63-20Sundara Kanda 63.20

अङ्गदप्रमुखैर्वीरैर्हतं मधुवनं किल।।5.63.20।। वारयन्तश्च सहितास्तदा जानुभिराहताः।

aṅgadapramukhairvīrairhatṃ madhuvanṃ kila||5.63.20|| vārayantaśca sahitāstadā jānubhirāhatāḥ|

Translation

अङ्गदप्रमुखैः Angada and other leaders, वीरैः heroes, मधुवनम् Madhuvanam, हतं किल destroyed the garden, सहिताः along with others, वारयन्तः च when they were obstructed, तदा then, जानुभिः knees, आहताः beaten.

SK-63-21Sundara Kanda 63.21

एतदर्थमयं प्राप्तो वक्तुं मधुरवागिह।।5.63.21।। नाम्ना दधिमुखो नाम हरिः प्रख्यातविक्रमः।

etadarthamayṃ prāpto vaktuṃ madhuravāgiha||5.63.21|| nāmnā dadhimukho nāma hariḥ prakhyātavikramḥ|

Translation

नाम्ना named, दधिमुखो नाम Dadhimukha, प्रख्यातविक्रमः known for his valour, हरिः monkey, एतदर्थम् on account of it, वक्तुम् to tell, मधुरवाक् sweet tongued, इह here, प्राप्तः came.

Meaning

"Here is Dadhimukha, a vanara, known for his valour and sweet tongue. He came here this incident to tell.

SK-63-22Sundara Kanda 63.22

दृष्टा सीता महाबाहो सौमित्रे पश्य तत्त्वतः।।5.63.22।। अभिगम्य तथा सर्वे पिबन्ति मधु वानराः।

dṛṣṭā sītā mahābāho saumitre paśya tattvatḥ||5.63.22|| abhigamya tathā sarve pibanti madhu vānarāḥ|

Translation

महाबाहो strongarmed, सौमित्रे O Saumitri, सीता Sita, दृष्टा would have seen, तत्त्वतः truly, पश्य seen, तथा so, वानराः vanaras, सर्वे all, अभिगम्य having arrived, मधु honey, पिबन्ति drank.

Meaning

"O strongarmed Saumitri the Vanaras must have seen Sita. Or else, they would not have arrived to drink honey.

SK-63-23Sundara Kanda 63.23

न चाप्यदृष्ट्वा वैदेहीं विश्रुताः पुरुषर्षभ।।5.63.23।। वनं दत्तवरं दिव्यं धर्षयेयुर्वनौकसः।

na cāpyadṛṣṭvā vaidehīṃ viśrutāḥ puruṣarṣabha||5.63.23|| vanṃ dattavarṃ divyṃ dharṣayeyurvanaukasḥ|

Translation

पुरुषर्षभ bull among men, विश्रुताः renowned, वनौकसः forestdwellers, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, अदृष्ट्वा not seen, दत्तवरम् that which was given as boon, दिव्यम् wonderful, वनम् garden, न धर्षयेयुः entered.

Meaning

"If the renowned vanaras had not seen Vaidehi, they would not have entered the wonderful garden granted as boon (by Brahma).

SK-63-24-25Sundara Kanda 63.24–25 (युग्मम्)

ततः प्रहृष्टो धर्मात्मा लक्ष्मणस्सह राघवः।।5.63.24।। श्रुत्वा कर्णसुखां वाणीं सुग्रीववदनाच्च्युताम्। प्राहृष्यत भृशं रामो लक्ष्मणश्च महाबलः।।5.63.25।।

tatḥ prahṛṣṭo dharmātmā lakṣmaṇassaha rāghavḥ||5.63.24|| śrutvā karṇasukhāṃ vāṇīṃ sugrīvavadanāccyutām| prāhṛṣyata bhṛśṃ rāmo lakṣmaṇaśca mahābalḥ||5.63.25||

Translation

ततः then, सह राघवः also Rama, धर्मात्मा righteous, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, प्रहृष्टः very cheerful rejoiced, सुग्रीववदनात् Sugriva's mouth, च्युताम् delivered, कर्णसुखाम् pleasing to the ears, वाणीम् words, श्रुत्वा having heard, रामः Rama, प्राहृष्यत felt happy, महाबलः mighty strong, लक्ष्मणश्च even Lakshmana, भृशम् very, प्राहृष्यत happy.

Meaning

"Then righteous Rama and Lakshmana rejoiced to hear the words of Sugriva, which were pleasing to the ears.

SK-63-26Sundara Kanda 63.26

श्रुत्वा दधिमुखस्येदं सुग्रीवस्सम्प्रहृष्य च। वनपालं पुनर्वाक्यं सुग्रीवः प्रत्यभाषत।।5.63.26।।

śrutvā dadhimukhasyedṃ sugrīvassamprahṛṣya ca| vanapālṃ punarvākyṃ sugrīvḥ pratyabhāṣata||5.63.26||

Translation

सुग्रीवः one with beautiful neck, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, दधिमुखस्य Dadhimukha's, इदम् thus, श्रुत्वा having heard, सम्प्रहृष्य च very glad, पुनः again, वनपालम् protector of the garden, वाक्यम् these words, प्रत्यभाषत replied.

Meaning

Beautifulnecked Sugriva heard Dadhimukha, the protector of the garden, felt very glad and replied:

SK-63-27Sundara Kanda 63.27

प्रीतोऽस्मि सोऽहं यद्भुक्तं वनं तैः कृतकर्मभिः। मर्षितं मर्षणीयं च चेष्टितं कृतकर्मणाम्।।5.63.27।।

prīto'smi so'hṃ yadbhuktṃ vanṃ taiḥ kṛtakarmabhiḥ| marṣitṃ marṣaṇīyṃ ca ceṣṭitṃ kṛtakarmaṇām||5.63.27||

Translation

कृतकर्मभिः having performed the duty, तैः they, वनम् garden, यत् भुक्तम् for drinking that honey, सः अहम् I, प्रीतः अस्मि I am pleased, कृतकर्मणाम् having accomplished the task, मर्षणीयम् are to be excused, चेष्टितम् their behaviour, मर्षितम् excused.

Meaning

"They went to the garden to drink only after having performed their duty. I am glad about it. Since they have accomplished the purpose, they are to be excused for their behaviour. I have pardoned them.

SK-63-28Sundara Kanda 63.28

इच्छामि शीघ्रं हनुमत्प्रधानान् शाखामृगांस्तान् मृगराजदर्पान्। द्रष्टुं कृतार्थान् सह राघवाभ्यां श्रोतुं च सीताधिगमे प्रयत्नम्।।5.63.28।।

icchāmi śīghrṃ hanumatpradhānān śākhāmṛgāṃstān mṛgarājadarpān| draṣṭuṃ kṛtārthān saha rāghavābhyāṃ śrotuṃ ca sītādhigame prayatnam||5.63.28||

Translation

हनुमत्प्रधानान् led by Hanuman, मृगराजदर्पान् with the majesty of the lion, कृतार्थान् acomplished ones, तान् them, शाखामृगान् vanaras (who live on trees), राघवाभ्यां सह Rama and others, द्रष्टुम् to see, सीताधिगमेन to see Sita, प्रयत्नम् endeavour, श्रोतुं च to hear, इच्छामि desiring.

SK-63-29Sundara Kanda 63.29

प्रीतिस्फीताक्षौ सम्प्रहृष्टौ कुमारौ दृष्ट्वा सिद्धार्थौ वानराणां च राजा। अङ्गैः संहृष्टैः कर्मसिद्धिं विदित्वा बाह्वोरासन्नां सोऽतिमात्रं ननन्द।।5.63.29।।

prītisphītākṣau samprahṛṣṭau kumārau dṛṣṭvā siddhārthau vānarāṇāṃ ca rājā| aṅgaiḥ sṃhṛṣṭaiḥ karmasiddhiṃ viditvā bāhvorāsannāṃ so'timātrṃ nananda||5.63.29||

Translation

सः he (Sugriva), वानराणां राजा king of vanaras, प्रीतिस्फीताक्षौ eyes filled with joy, सम्प्रहृष्टौ very happy, सिद्धार्धौ accomplished, कुमारौ young, दृष्ट्वा seeing, संहृष्टैः very glad, अङ्गैः limbs of the body, कर्मसिद्धिम् task has been accomplished, बाह्वोः shoulders, आसन्नाम् time has come, विदित्वा recognising, अतिमात्रम् highly, ननन्द delighted.

Meaning

"Beholding young Rama and Lakshmana extremely delighted, their eyes filled with joy out of fulfilment of the purpose, Sugriva who was also highly delighted felt an auspicious thrill on his limbs and knew that good time had come. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे त्रिषष्टितमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the sixtythird sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
