SK-35-1Sundara Kanda 35.1

तां तु रामकथां श्रुत्वा वैदेही वानरर्षभात्। उवाच वचनं सान्त्वमिदं मधुरया गिरा।।5.35.1।।

tāṃ tu rāmakathāṃ śrutvā vaidehī vānararṣabhāt| uvāca vacanṃ sāntvamidṃ madhurayā girā||5.35.1||

Translation

वैदेही Vaidehi, वानरर्षभात् from the bull among vanaras, ताम् that, रामकथाम् Rama's story, श्रुत्वा heard, मधुरया in sweet, गिरा word, सान्त्वम् polite, इदम् these, वचनम् words, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

On hearing about Rama from the bull among vanaras, thus spoke Vaidehi politely in a sweet voice:

SK-35-2Sundara Kanda 35.2

क्व ते रामेण संसर्गः कथं जानासि लक्ष्मणम्। वानराणां नराणां च कथमासीत्समागमः।।5.35.2।।

kva te rāmeṇa sṃsargḥ kathṃ jānāsi lakṣmaṇam| vānarāṇāṃ narāṇāṃ ca kathamāsītsamāgamḥ||5.35.2||

Translation

ते to you, रामेण with Rama, संसर्गः contact, क्व where, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, कथम् how, जानासि do you assess, वानराणाम् of vanaras, नराणां च a human, समागमः union, कथम् how, आसीत् took place.

Meaning

"Where did you come in contact with Rama? How did you assess Lakshmana? How did an alliance of vanaras and humans take place?

SK-35-3Sundara Kanda 35.3

यानि रामस्य लिङ्गानि लक्ष्मणस्य च वानर। तानि भूयस्समाचक्ष्व न मां शोकस्समाविशेत्।।5.35.3।।

yāni rāmasya liṅgāni lakṣmaṇasya ca vānara| tāni bhūyassamācakṣva na māṃ śokassamāviśet||5.35.3||

Translation

वानर O vanara, रामस्य Rama's, लक्ष्मणस्य च and Lakshmana's, यानि those, लिङ्गानि identification marks, तानि those, समाचक्ष्व you may tell, माम् to me, भूयः again, शोकः sorrow, न not, समाविशेत् entire account.

Meaning

"O vanara tell me all about the identification marks of Rama and Lakshmana again so that grief does not enter my mind.

SK-35-4Sundara Kanda 35.4

कीदृशं तस्य संस्थानं रूपं रामस्य कीदृशम्। कथमूरू कथं बाहू लक्ष्मणस्य च शंस मे।।5.35.4।।

kīdṛśṃ tasya sṃsthānṃ rūpṃ rāmasya kīdṛśam| kathamūrū kathṃ bāhū lakṣmaṇasya ca śṃsa me||5.35.4||

Translation

तस्य his, रामस्य Rama's, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, संस्थानम् form, कीदृशम् how, रूपम् form, कीदृशम् how does his look, ऊरू thighs, कथम् how, बाहू arms, कथम् how, मे to me, शंस tell.

Meaning

"What does Rama look like? And Laksmana? How are his thighs, arms? Tell me".

SK-35-5Sundara Kanda 35.5

एवमुक्तस्तु वैदेह्या हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः। ततो रामं यथातत्त्वमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे।।5.35.5।।

evamuktastu vaidehyā hanumānmārutātmajḥ| tato rāmṃ yathātattvamākhyātumupacakrame||5.35.5||

Translation

वैदेह्या by Vaidehi, एवम् in that manner, उक्तः spoken, मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, हनुमान् Hanuman, ततः thereafter, रामम् Rama, यथातत्त्वम् as it is, आख्यातुम् to describe, उपचक्रमे he started telling.

Meaning

Questioned thus by Vaidehi, Hanuman, son of the Windgod started describing Rama's physique as it is.

SK-35-6Sundara Kanda 35.6

जानन्ती बत दिष्ट्या मां वैदेहि परिपृच्छसि। भर्तुः कमलपत्त्राक्षि संस्थानं लक्ष्मणस्य च।।5.35.6।।

jānantī bata diṣṭyā māṃ vaidehi paripṛcchasi| bhartuḥ kamalapattrākṣi sṃsthānṃ lakṣmaṇasya ca||5.35.6||

Translation

कमलपत्त्राक्षि eyes like lotus petals, वैदेहि Vaidehi, जानन्ती even though you know, दिष्ट्या by good fortune, भर्तुः husband's, लक्ष्मणस्य च and Lakshmana's, संस्थानम् form and distinguishing marks, परिपृच्छसि have asked, बत indeed.

Meaning

"O Vaidehi with eyes like lotus petals although you know your husband's and Lakshmana's form and distinguishing marks, it is my good fortune that you asked me (to describe them).

SK-35-7Sundara Kanda 35.7

यानि रामस्य चिह्नानि लक्ष्मणस्य च यानि वै। लक्षितानि विशालाक्षि वदतश्शृणु तानि मे।।5.35.7।।

yāni rāmasya cihnāni lakṣmaṇasya ca yāni vai| lakṣitāni viśālākṣi vadataśśṛṇu tāni me||5.35.7||

Translation

विशालाक्षि O largeeyed lady, रामस्य Rama's, यानि लक्षणानि those distinguishing marks, लक्ष्मणस्य च and Lakshmana's, यानि those, लक्षितानि signs, तानि them, वदतः as I describe, मे myself, शृणु listen.

Meaning

"O largeeyed lady I will describe those distinguishing marks of Rama and Lakshmana Listen.

SK-35-8Sundara Kanda 35.8

रामः कमलपत्त्राक्ष स्सर्वसत्त्वमनोहरः। रूपदाक्षिण्यसम्पन्नः प्रसूतो जनकात्मजे।।5.35.8।।

rāmḥ kamalapattrākṣa ssarvasattvamanoharḥ| rūpadākṣiṇyasampannḥ prasūto janakātmaje||5.35.8||

Translation

जनकात्मजे O Janaka's daughter, रामः Rama, कमलपत्त्राक्षः one who has eyes like lotus petals, सर्वसत्त्वमनोहरः one who delights all beings, रूपदाक्षिण्यसम्पन्नः endowed richly with charm and politeness, प्रसूतः born with.

Meaning

"O daughter of Janaka Rama with eyes like lotus petals is a person born with a delightful form, richly endowed with indescribable charm and politeness.

SK-35-9Sundara Kanda 35.9

तेजसाऽदित्य सङ्काशः क्षमया पृथिवीसमः। बृहस्पतिसमो बुद्ध्या यशसा वासवोपमः।।5.35.9।।

tejasā'ditya saṅkāśḥ kṣamayā pṛthivīsamḥ| bṛhaspatisamo buddhyā yaśasā vāsavopamḥ||5.35.9||

Translation

तेजसा in effulgence, आदित्यसङ्काशः vies with the Sun, क्षमया in tolerance, पृथिवीसमः equals the earth, बुद्ध्या in intelligence, बृहस्पतिसमः equal to Brihaspathi, यशसा in fame, वासवोपमः equals Indra.

Meaning

"He vies with the Sun in effulgence, with earth in forbearance, with Brihaspati in intelligence, and in fame with Indra.

SK-35-10Sundara Kanda 35.10

रक्षिता जीवलोकस्य स्वजनस्याभिरक्षिता। रक्षिता स्वस्य वृत्तस्य धर्मस्य च परन्तपः।।5.35.10।।

rakṣitā jīvalokasya svajanasyābhirakṣitā| rakṣitā svasya vṛttasya dharmasya ca parantapḥ||5.35.10||

Translation

परन्तपः scorcher of enemies, जीवलोकस्य of the world of living beings, रक्षिता protector, स्वजनस्य of his own people, अभिरक्षिता protector, स्वस्य of his own, वृत्तस्य of the race, धर्मस्य च and guards righteousness

Meaning

"Rama is a protector of the entire world of living beings not to speak of his own people. He is a protector of his own race. He guards righteousness. He is a scorcher of enemies.

SK-35-11Sundara Kanda 35.11

रामो भामिनि लोकस्य चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य रक्षिता। मर्यादानां च लोकस्य कर्ता कारयिता च सः।।5.35.11।।

rāmo bhāmini lokasya cāturvarṇyasya rakṣitā| maryādānāṃ ca lokasya kartā kārayitā ca sḥ||5.35.11||

Translation

भामिनि O beautiful lady, रामः Rama, लोकस्य world's, चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य of the four classes of society, रक्षिता protector, सः he, लोकानाम् of all the worlds, मर्यादानाम् code and conduct, कर्ता maker, कारयिताचैव will make others follow.

Meaning

"O beautiful lady Rama is a protector of the four classes of society (Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaisya and Sudra) in the world. He follows codes of conduct and makes others follow them.

SK-35-12Sundara Kanda 35.12

अर्चिष्मानर्चितोऽत्यर्थं ब्रह्मचर्यव्रते स्थितः। साधूनामुपकारज्ञः प्रचारज्ञश्च कर्मणाम्।।5.35.12।।

arciṣmānarcito'tyarthṃ brahmacaryavrate sthitḥ| sādhūnāmupakārajñḥ pracārajñaśca karmaṇām||5.35.12||

Translation

अर्चिष्मान् luminous, अत्यर्थम् intensely, अर्चितः worshipped, ब्रह्मचर्यव्रते observing the vow of selfcontrol, स्थितः one who is steadfast, साधूनाम् for the holy men, उपकारज्ञः recognises right action, कर्मणाम् rites, प्रचारज्ञश्च of the ways of administration.

Meaning

"He is luminous and highly revered. He observes vow of selfcontrol. He is steadfast and recognises services rendered by sages. He is aware of the rites and the ways of administration.

SK-35-13Sundara Kanda 35.13

राजविद्याविनीतश्च ब्राह्मणानामुपासिता। श्रुतवान्शीलसम्पन्नो विनीतश्च परन्तपः।।5.35.13।।

rājavidyāvinītaśca brāhmaṇānāmupāsitā| śrutavānśīlasampanno vinītaśca parantapḥ||5.35.13||

Translation

राजविद्याविनीतश्च welltrained in statecraft, ब्राह्मणानाम् of the brahmins, उपासिता a devotee, श्रुतवान् learned in scriptures, शीलसम्पन्नः endowed with excellent conduct, विनीतः is disciplined, परन्तपः is a scorcher of enemies.

Meaning

"He is welltrained in statecraft. He is devoted to brahmins. Endowed with an excellent conduct, he is learned in scriptures and a scorcher of enemies.

SK-35-14Sundara Kanda 35.14

यजुर्वेदविनीतश्च वेदविद्भिस्सुपूजितः। धनुर्वेदे च वेदेषु वेदाङ्गेषु च निष्ठितः।।5.35.14।।

yajurvedavinītaśca vedavidbhissupūjitḥ| dhanurvede ca vedeṣu vedāṅgeṣu ca niṣṭhitḥ||5.35.14||

Translation

यजुर्वेदविनीतश्च versed in Yajurveda, वेदविद्भिः by the knowers of the Vedas, सुपूजितः respected, धनुर्वेदे च and in Dhanurveda also, वेदेषु in other Vedas also, वेदाङ्गेषु च Vedangas (auxillary Vedas) also, निष्ठितः is an expert.

Meaning

"He is versed in Yajurveda and is respected by Vedic scholars. He has mastered Dhanurveda and other Vedas and auxillary Vedas as well.

SK-35-15Sundara Kanda 35.15

विपुलांसो महाबाहुः कम्बुग्रीवश्शुभाननः। गूढजत्रुस्सुताम्राक्षो रामो देवि जनै श्श्रुतः।।5.35.15।।

vipulāṃso mahābāhuḥ kambugrīvaśśubhānanḥ| gūḍhajatrussutāmrākṣo rāmo devi janai śśrutḥ||5.35.15||

Translation

देवि goddess like lady, रामः Rama, विपुलां सः broadshouldered, महाबाहुः strongarmed, कम्बुग्रीवः with conchshaped neck, शुभाननः with an auspicious countenance, गूढजत्रुः has round shoulders, सुताम्राक्षः copperyred eyes जनैः in all worlds, श्रुतः renowned.

Meaning

"O godlike lady Rama has broad shoulders, strong arms, conchshaped neck and an auspicious countenance. With his fleshy round arms and copperyred eyes, he is renowned in all the worlds.

SK-35-16Sundara Kanda 35.16

दुन्दुभिस्वननिर्घोष स्स्निग्धवर्णः प्रतापवान्। सम स्समविभक्ताङ्गो वर्णं श्यामं समाश्रितः।।5.35.16।।

dundubhisvananirghoṣa ssnigdhavarṇḥ pratāpavān| sama ssamavibhaktāṅgo varṇṃ śyāmṃ samāśritḥ||5.35.16||

Translation

दुन्दुभिस्वननिर्घोषः his tone is resonant like the drums, स्निग्धवर्णः has beautiful shining complexion, प्रतापवान् full of valour, समः not too tall or short, समविभक्ताङ्गः his limbs are symmetrical, श्यामम् dark, वर्णम् colour, समाश्रितः has proportionate limbs.

Meaning

"His tone is resonant like drums, he has a beautiful, dark, shining complexion. He has symmetrical, well proportioned limbs. He is neither too tall nor too short.

SK-35-17Sundara Kanda 35.17

त्रिस्थिरस्त्रिप्रलम्बश्च त्रिसमस्त्रिषु चोन्नतः। त्रिताम्रस्त्रिषु च स्निग्धो गम्भीरस्त्रिषु नित्यशः।।5.35.17।।

tristhirastripralambaśca trisamastriṣu connatḥ| tritāmrastriṣu ca snigdho gambhīrastriṣu nityaśḥ||5.35.17||

Translation

त्रिस्थिरः has the three stiff limbs (chest, fist and wrists), त्रिप्रलम्बश्च long in three (arms, eyebrows and scrotum), त्रिसमः has three even parts (locks of hair, knees and testicles), त्रिषु elevated in three parts (abdomen, navel and chest), उन्नतः raised, त्रिषु च all the three parts (soles, nails and eyes), स्निग्धः has coppery reddish colour, नित्यशः all over, त्रिषु in the three parts (the underlines of feet, the hair and the reproductive organs), गम्भीरः is majestic.

Meaning

"He has three stiff parts, three long parts, three even parts, three shining parts, elevated in three parts, has three raised parts, his body has lines in three parts and is of coppery reddish colour in three parts. He has a majestic look.

SK-35-18Sundara Kanda 35.18

त्रिवलीवांस्त्र्यवनतश्चतुर्व्यङ्गस्त्रिशीर्षवान्। चतुष्कलश्चतुर्लेखश्चतुष्किष्कुश्चतु स्समः।।5.35.18।।

trivalīvāṃstryavanataścaturvyaṅgastriśīrṣavān| catuṣkalaścaturlekhaścatuṣkiṣkuścatu ssamḥ||5.35.18||

Translation

त्रिवलीवान् has three folds on his neck, स्त्र्यवनतः his nipples and middle of his soles are depressed, चतुर्व्यङ्गः four parts of his body are depressedneck, penis, shanks and back, त्रिशीर्षवान् has three spirals in the head, चतुष्कलः has four lines under his thumb, चतुर्लेखः has four lines on the forehead, चतुष्किष्कुः he is four cubits in height, चतुस्समः he has arms, knees, cheeks and thighs well proportioned

Meaning

"He has three folds in the skin of his neck and belly, is depressed in the middle of his soles and the nipples, undersized at four placesthe neck, penis, shanks and back, has three spirals on his head, has four lines under his thumb, has four lines on his forehead, he is a person with four cubits in height and symmetrical arms, cheeks and thighs.

SK-35-19Sundara Kanda 35.19

चतुर्दशसमद्वन्द्वश्चतुर्दंष्ट्रश्चतुर्गतिः। महोष्ठहनुनासश्च पञ्चस्निग्धोऽष्टवंशवान्।।5.35.19।।

caturdaśasamadvandvaścaturdṃṣṭraścaturgatiḥ| mahoṣṭhahanunāsaśca pañcasnigdho'ṣṭavṃśavān||5.35.19||

Translation

चतुर्दशसमद्वन्द्वः he is person with the fourteen parts of his body (eyebrows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles, loins, arms, legs and buttocks) in good proportion, चतुर्दंष्ट्रः he is one with four sharp teeth, चतुर्गतिः he moves like a lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands, महोष्ठहनुनासश्च he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws, पञ्चस्निग्ध: he is one with five smooth parts (hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet), अष्टवंशवान् his eight parts of the body (backbone, trunk, limbs, fingers, toes, nose, eyes and testicles) are long.

Meaning

"He is a person with his pairs of eyebrows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, knees, testicles, loins, arms, legs and buttocks in good symmetry he has four sharp teeth. He walks in different gaits like a lion, leopard, elephant and bull as occasion demands he has sharp nose, charming lips and jaws. He has smooth hair, eyes, skin, teeth and feet and his eight parts of his body namely back, trunk, limbs, fingers, toes, eyes and testicles are long.

SK-35-20Sundara Kanda 35.20

दशपद्मो दशबृहत्त्रिभिर्व्याप्तो द्विशुक्लवान्। षडुन्नतो नवतनुस्त्रिभिर्व्याप्नोति राघवः।।5.35.20।।

daśapadmo daśabṛhattribhirvyāpto dviśuklavān| ṣaḍunnato navatanustribhirvyāpnoti rāghavḥ||5.35.20||

Translation

राघवः Rama, दशपद्मः ten lotuslike limbs (eyes, face, mouth, tongue, lips, cheeks, nipples, nails, feet and hands), दशबृहत् he is one with ten wellproportioned limbs (head, forehead, ears, neck, chest, heart, belly, hands, legs, buttocks), त्रिभिः covered with three aspects (splendour, fame and glory), व्याप्तः well known, द्विशुक्लवान् two white limbs teeth and eyes, षडुन्नतः he has six elevated limbs (nose, shoulders, forehead, chest and arm pits), नवतनुः has nine fine features (moustache, nails, knuckles, beard, skin, hair, penis, acumen, perception), त्रिभिः he pursues spiritual merit, worldly comforts and sensual delight in three periodsforenoon, middday and evening of the day, व्याप्नोति follows righteous principles.

Meaning

"Ten limbs of the body resemble lotuses. He has proportionate limbs. He is known by the virtue of his spledour, fame and glory. Both his teeth and eyes are fair. Six parts of his body are elevated, nine parts of his body are fine and sharp. He pursues spiritual merit, worldly comfort and sensual delight in three periods of the dayforenoon, midday and evening. He always adopts the righteous way of life.

SK-35-21Sundara Kanda 35.21

सत्यधर्मपरश्श्रीमान् सङ्ग्रहानुग्रहे रतः। देशकालविभागज्ञस्सर्वलोकप्रियंवदः।।5.35.21।।

satyadharmaparaśśrīmān saṅgrahānugrahe ratḥ| deśakālavibhāgajñassarvalokapriyṃvadḥ||5.35.21||

Translation

सत्यधर्मपरः established in truth and righteousness, श्रीमान् prosperous, सङ्ग्रहानुग्रहे रतः he is involved in both accumulation and favourable disposition towards others, देशकालविभागज्ञः who discharges his duties at proper time and place, सर्वलोकप्रियंवदः who is loved by all for his endearing words.

Meaning

"He is ever established in truth and righteousness. He is prosperous and desires to accumulate wealth in order to shower favour on others. He knows the right use of time and place in discharging his duties. He has endeared himself to all by his words.

SK-35-22Sundara Kanda 35.22

भ्राता तस्य च द्वैमात्रस्सौमित्रिरपराजितः। अनुरागेण रूपेण गुणैश्चैव तथाविधः।।5.35.22।।

bhrātā tasya ca dvaimātrassaumitriraparājitḥ| anurāgeṇa rūpeṇa guṇaiścaiva tathāvidhḥ||5.35.22||

Translation

तस्य his, द्वैमात्रः born of a different mother, भ्राता brother, अपराजितः one who has never been defeated, सौमित्रिः Saumitri, अनुरागेण in affection, रूपेण in charm, गुणैश्चैव in virtues, तथाविधः similar to him.

Meaning

"His invincible brother Saumitri born of a different mother is a replica of Rama in affection, charm and virtues.

SK-35-23Sundara Kanda 35.23

तावुभौ नरशार्दूलौ त्वद्दर्शनसमुत्सुकौ। विचिन्वन्तौ महीं कृत्स्नामस्माभिरभिसङ्गतौ।।5.35.23।।

tāvubhau naraśārdūlau tvaddarśanasamutsukau| vicinvantau mahīṃ kṛtsnāmasmābhirabhisaṅgatau||5.35.23||

Translation

नरशार्दूलौ tiger among men, तौ they, उभौ both, त्वद्दर्शनसमुत्सुकौ eager to see you, कृत्स्नाम् entire, महीम् earth, विचिन्वन्तौ both searching for, अस्माभिः by us, अभिसङ्गतौ they met us.

Meaning

"While earnestly searching for you all over the earth both tigers among men came in contact with us.

SK-35-24-25Sundara Kanda 35.24–25 (युग्मम्)

त्वामेव मार्गमाणौ तौ विचरन्तौ वसुन्धराम्। ददर्शतुर्मृगपतिं पूर्वजेनावरोपितम्।।5.35.24।। ऋश्यमूकस्य पृष्ठे तु बहुपादपसङ्कुले। भ्रातुर्भयार्तमासीनं सुग्रीवं प्रियदर्शनम्।।5.35.25।।

tvāmeva mārgamāṇau tau vicarantau vasundharām| dadarśaturmṛgapatiṃ pūrvajenāvaropitam||5.35.24|| ṛśyamūkasya pṛṣṭhe tu bahupādapasaṅkule| bhrāturbhayārtamāsīnṃ sugrīvṃ priyadarśanam||5.35.25||

Translation

त्वामेव for you, मार्गमाणौ while searching, वसुन्धराम् all over the earth, विचरन्तौ while both were wandering, तौ they both, बहुपादपसङ्कुले filled with many trees, ऋश्यमूकस्य पृष्ठे on the mountain Rshyamuka, आसीनम् seated, पूर्वजेन by the elder brother, अवरोपितम् one who has been thrown out, भ्रातुः brother's, भयार्तम् frightened, प्रियदर्शनम् one who is pleasing to see, मृगपतिम् lord of animals, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, ददर्शतुः both of them saw.

Meaning

"While both of them were wandering, searching for you all over the earth they saw Sugriva, the lord of animals who had been thrown out of kingship by his elder brother and was living on the mountain Rshyamuka frightened of him.

SK-35-26Sundara Kanda 35.26

वयं तु हरिराजं तं सुग्रीवं सत्यसङ्गरम्। परिचर्यामहे राज्यात्पूर्वजेनावरोपितम्।।5.35.26।।

vayṃ tu harirājṃ tṃ sugrīvṃ satyasaṅgaram| paricaryāmahe rājyātpūrvajenāvaropitam||5.35.26||

Translation

वयं तु we too, पूर्वजेन by his elder brother, राज्यात् from the kingdom, अवरोपितम् deposed, सत्यसङ्गरम् one who is committed to truth, हरिराजम् king of vanaras, तम् him, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, परिचर्यामहे we serve him.

Meaning

"Sugriva, king of vanaras who is committed to defend truth has been deposed from the kingdom by his elder brother. We keep attending on him.

SK-35-27Sundara Kanda 35.27

ततस्तौ चीरवसनौ धनुः प्रवरपाणिनौ। ऋश्यमूकस्य शैलस्य रम्यं देशमुपागतौ।।5.35.27।।

tatastau cīravasanau dhanuḥ pravarapāṇinau| ṛśyamūkasya śailasya ramyṃ deśamupāgatau||5.35.27||

Translation

ततः then, चीरवसनौ clad in bark robes, धनुःप्रवरपाणिनौ armed with powerful bows, तौ both, ऋश्यमूकस्य शैलस्य on the Rshyamukha mountain, रम्यम् beautiful, देशम् location, उपागतौ both reached.

Meaning

"Both the princes clad in bark robes and armed with powerful bows reached the beautiful location of Rshyamukha mountain.

SK-35-28Sundara Kanda 35.28

स तौ दृष्ट्वा नरव्याघ्रौ धन्विनौ वानरर्षभः। अवप्लुतो गिरेस्तस्य शिखरं भयमोहितः।।5.35.28।।

Translation

सः he, वानरर्षभः bull among vanaras, धन्विनौ armed with bows, तौ both of them, नरव्याघ्रौ tigers among men, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, भयमोहितः deluded with fear, तस्य from that, गिरेः mountain, शिखरम् top, अभिप्लुतः jumped.

Meaning

"On seeing the tigers among men armed with bows, Sugriva, the bull among vanaras jumped from the mountain deluded with fear and reached the peak.

SK-35-29Sundara Kanda 35.29

ततस्स शिखरे तस्मिन्वानरेन्द्रो व्यवस्थितः। तयोस्समीपं मामेव प्रेषयामास सत्वरम्।।5.35.29।।

tatassa śikhare tasminvānarendro vyavasthitḥ| tayossamīpṃ māmeva preṣayāmāsa satvaram||5.35.29||

Translation

ततः thereafter, सः he, वानरेन्द्रः lord of vanaras, तस्मिन् on that, शिखरे mountain top, व्यवस्थितः staying there, मामेव me only, तयोः of both of them, समीपम् towads, सत्वरम् quickly, प्रेषयामास sent.

Meaning

"Thereafter the lord of vanaras staying on the mountain top quickly sent me to meet both of them.

SK-35-30Sundara Kanda 35.30

तावहं पुरुषव्याघ्रौ सुग्रीववचनात्प्रभू। रूपलक्षणसम्पन्नौ कृताञ्जलिरुपस्थितः।।5.35.30।।

tāvahṃ puruṣavyāghrau sugrīvavacanātprabhū| rūpalakṣaṇasampannau kṛtāñjalirupasthitḥ||5.35.30||

Translation

अहम् I, सुग्रीववचनात् according to the instruction of Sugriva, पुरुषव्याघ्रौ two tigers among men, प्रभू two lords, रूपलक्षणसम्पन्नौ both endowed with charming appearance and auspicious marks, तौ both, कृताञ्जलिः joined palms in salutation, उपस्थितः approached.

SK-35-31Sundara Kanda 35.31

तौ परिज्ञाततत्त्वार्थौ मया प्रीतिसमन्वितौ। पृष्ठमारोप्य तं देशं प्रापितौ पुरुषर्षभौ।।5.35.31।।

tau parijñātatattvārthau mayā prītisamanvitau| pṛṣṭhamāropya tṃ deśṃ prāpitau puruṣarṣabhau||5.35.31||

Translation

परिज्ञाततत्त्वर्थौ realised the true position, प्रीतिसमन्वितौ filled with pleasure, पुरुषर्षभौ two bulls among men, तौ both, मया by me, पृष्ठम् back, आरोप्य placing, तं देशम् to that place, प्रापितौ carried.

Meaning

"I recognised the true status of both the mighty men who were filled with joy, placed them on my back, and reached the mountaintop.

SK-35-32Sundara Kanda 35.32

निवेदितौ च तत्त्वेन सुग्रीवाय महात्मने। तयोरन्योन्यसल्लापाद्भृशं प्रीतिरजायत।।5.35.32।।

niveditau ca tattvena sugrīvāya mahātmane| tayoranyonyasallāpādbhṛśṃ prītirajāyata||5.35.32||

Translation

महात्मने to the great self, सुग्रीवाय to Sugriva, तत्त्वेन faithfully, निवेदितौ reported by me, तयोः of both of them, अन्योन्यसल्लापात् got to know each other through conversation, भृशम् fond, प्रीतिः friendship, अजायत developed.

Meaning

"I reported faithfully about both the highsouled men to Sugriva. As they got to know each other through conversation a fast friendship developed between them.

SK-35-33Sundara Kanda 35.33

ततस्तौ प्रीतिसम्पन्नौ हरीश्वरनरेश्वरौ। परस्परकृताश्वासौ कथया पूर्ववृत्तया।।5.35.33।।

Translation

ततः then, प्रीतिसम्पन्नौ full of joy, तौ both, हरीश्वरनरेश्वरौ king of monkeys and the king of people, पूर्ववृत्तया with their past, कथया with account, परस्परकृताश्वासौ they consoled each other.

SK-35-34Sundara Kanda 35.34

ततस्स सान्त्वयामास सुग्रीवं लक्ष्मणाग्रजः। स्त्रीहेतोर्वालिना भ्रात्रा निरस्तमुरुतेजसा।।5.35.34।।

Translation

ततः thereafter, सः he, लक्ष्मणाग्रजः the elder brother of Lakshmana, उरुतेजसा with great prowess, भ्रात्रा by the brother, वालिना by Vali, स्त्रीहेतो on account of a woman, निरस्तम् deposed, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, सान्त्वयामास consoled.

Meaning

"Then Rama, consoled Sugriva who was dethroned and abandoned on acount of a woman by his brother Vali, endowed with great prowess.

SK-35-35Sundara Kanda 35.35

ततस्त्वन्नाशजं शोकं रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः। लक्ष्मणो वानरेन्द्राय सुग्रीवाय न्यवेदयत्।।5.35.35।।

tatastvannāśajṃ śokṃ rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇḥ| lakṣmaṇo vānarendrāya sugrīvāya nyavedayat||5.35.35||

Translation

ततः then, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, अक्लिष्टकर्मणः one who is adept in accomplishing tasks with ease, रामस्य Rama's, त्वन्नाशजम् on account of your loss, शोकम् grief, वानरेन्द्राय to the lord of vanaras, सुग्रीवाय to Sugriva, न्यवेदयत् revealed.

Meaning

"Then Lakshmana spoke to the lord of vanaras, Sugriva about your loss and the grief caused to Rama, who is adept in accomplishing difficult deeds with ease.

SK-35-36Sundara Kanda 35.36

स श्रुत्वा वानरेन्द्रस्तु लक्ष्मणेनेरितं वचः। तदासीन्निष्प्रभोऽत्यर्थं ग्रहग्रस्त इवांशुमान्।।5.35.36।।

sa śrutvā vānarendrastu lakṣmaṇeneritṃ vacḥ| tadāsīnniṣprabho'tyarthṃ grahagrasta ivāṃśumān||5.35.36||

Translation

सः he, वानरेन्द्रस्तु to the king of vanaras, लक्ष्मणेन by Lakshmana, ईरितम् spoken वचः words, श्रुत्वा having heard, तदा then, ग्रहग्रस्तः overshadowed by the planet, अंशुमानिव like the Sun, अत्यर्थम् extremely, निष्प्रभः lustreless, आसीत् became.

Meaning

"Having heard the words of Lakshmana, the king of vanaras became extremely lustreless like the Sun overshadowed by the planet Rahu.

SK-35-37-38Sundara Kanda 35.37–38 (युग्मम्)

ततस्त्वद्गात्रशोभीनि रक्षसा ह्रियमाणया। यान्याभरणजालानि पातितानि महीतले।।5.35.37।। तानि सर्वाणि रामाय आनीय हरियूथपाः। संहृष्टा दर्शयामासुर्गतिं तु न विदुस्तव।।5.35.38।।

tatastvadgātraśobhīni rakṣasā hriyamāṇayā| yānyābharaṇajālāni pātitāni mahītale||5.35.37|| tāni sarvāṇi rāmāya ānīya hariyūthapāḥ| sṃhṛṣṭā darśayāmāsurgatiṃ tu na vidustava||5.35.38||

Translation

ततः at that time, रक्षसा by the demon, ह्रियमाणया when you were borne away, त्वद्गात्रशोभिनी adorned your limbs, यानि those, आभरणजालानि bundle of ornaments, पातितानि dropped down, तानि सर्वाणि all of them, आनीय brought, हरियूथपाः vanara leaders, संहृष्टाः with great joy, रामाय to Rama, दर्शयामासुः showed, तव your, गतिं तु whereabouts, न विदुः did not know.

SK-35-39Sundara Kanda 35.39

तानि रामाय दत्तानि मयैवोपहृतानि च। स्वनवन्त्यवकीर्णानि तस्मिन्विगतचेतसि।।5.35.39।।

tāni rāmāya dattāni mayaivopahṛtāni ca| svanavantyavakīrṇāni tasminvigatacetasi||5.35.39||

Translation

मयैव by me, उपहृतानि collected, तानि those ornaments, रामाय to Rama, दत्तानि gave, तस्मिन् them, विगतचेतसि lost senses, स्वनवन्ति making jingling sound, अवकीर्णानि having scattered.

Meaning

"I collected the ornaments and gave them to Rama. He lost his senses on seeing the jingling ornaments scattered.

SK-35-40Sundara Kanda 35.40

तान्यङ्के दर्शनीयानि कृत्वा बहुविधं तव। तेन देवप्रकाशेन देवेन परिदेवितम्।।5.35.40।।

tānyaṅke darśanīyāni kṛtvā bahuvidhṃ tava| tena devaprakāśena devena paridevitam||5.35.40||

Translation

दर्शनीयानि beautiful ones, तव your, तानि those, अङ्के on his lap, कृत्वा having placed, देवप्रकाशेन by an effulgent one looking like the divine, तेन by him, देवेन divine self, बहुविधम् in many ways, परिदेवितम् wailed.

Meaning

"The divine self who is effulgent like god wailed in many ways placing the beautiful ornaments on his lap.

SK-35-41Sundara Kanda 35.41

पश्यतस्तानि रुदतस्ताम्यतश्च पुनः पुनः। प्रादीपयन्दाशरथेस्तानि शोकहुताशनम्।।5.35.41।।

paśyatastāni rudatastāmyataśca punḥ punḥ| prādīpayandāśarathestāni śokahutāśanam||5.35.41||

Translation

तानि them, पश्यतः as looked at, रुदतः while he wept, पुनः पुनः again and again, ताम्यतश्च regretting, दाशरथेः Dasaratha's son Rama's, शोकहुताशनम् fire in the form of grief, तानि them, प्रादीपयन् inflamed.

Meaning

"Rama looked at them and wept clasping them again and again in grief which inflamed like fire.

SK-35-42Sundara Kanda 35.42

शयितं च चिरं तेन दुःखार्तेन महात्मना। मयापि विविधैर्वाक्यैः कृच्छ्रादुत्थापितः पुनः।।5.35.42।।

śayitṃ ca cirṃ tena duḥkhārtena mahātmanā| mayāpi vividhairvākyaiḥ kṛcchrādutthāpitḥ punḥ||5.35.42||

Translation

दुःखार्तेन immersed in sorrow, तेन by him, महात्मना by the great self, शयितं च lay down, मयापि by me also, विविधैः by many, वाक्यैः by words, कृच्छ्रात् with great difficulty, पुनः again, उत्थापितः helped to get up.

Meaning

"Rama, the great self, immersed in sorrow lay down on the ground. I also consoled him with great difficulty and helped him to get up.

SK-35-43Sundara Kanda 35.43

तानि दृष्ट्वा महाबाहुर्दर्शयित्वा मुहुर्मुहुः। राघवस्सह सौमित्रिस्सुग्रीवे स न्यवेदयत्।।5.35.43।।

tāni dṛṣṭvā mahābāhurdarśayitvā muhurmuhuḥ| rāghavassaha saumitrissugrīve sa nyavedayat||5.35.43||

Translation

महाबाहुः longarmed one, सः राघवः that Rama, सहसौमित्रिः along with Lakshmana, तानि those, मुहुः मुहुः again and again, दर्शयित्वा after showing, सुग्रीवे to Sugriva, न्यवेदयत् presented.

Meaning

"Longarmed Rama along with Lakshmana looked at them again and again and gave them to the care of Sugriva.

SK-35-44Sundara Kanda 35.44

स तवादर्शनादार्ये राघवः परितप्यते। महता ज्वलता नित्यमग्निनेवाग्निपर्वतः।।5.35.44।।

sa tavādarśanādārye rāghavḥ paritapyate| mahatā jvalatā nityamagninevāgniparvatḥ||5.35.44||

Translation

आर्ये O divine lady, सः राघवः that Rama, तव your, अदर्शनात् separation from you, नित्यम् always, ज्वलता burning, महता great, अग्निना in fire, अग्निपर्वतः इव like a mountain of fire, परितप्यते ever blazing.

Meaning

"O divine lady on account of your separation he is ever blazing like a mountain of fire (Samvartaka).

SK-35-45Sundara Kanda 35.45

त्वत्कृते तमनिद्रा च शोकश्चिन्ता च राघवम्। तापयन्ति महात्मानमग्न्यगारमिवाग्नयः।।5.35.45।।

tvatkṛte tamanidrā ca śokaścintā ca rāghavam| tāpayanti mahātmānamagnyagāramivāgnayḥ||5.35.45||

Translation

त्वत्कृते on account of, महात्मानम् the great one, तं राघवम् that Rama, अनिद्रा च not sleeping, शोकः grief, चिन्ता च intense anxiety, अग्न्यगारम् like a furnace, अग्नयः इव like the three fires, तापयन्ति keep intensely heated.

Meaning

"Rama is burning like a furnace by (three fires) sleeplessness, grief and intense anxiety just as the three sacred fires keep a firesanctuary intensely heated.

SK-35-46Sundara Kanda 35.46

तवादर्शनशोकेन राघवः प्रविचाल्यते। महता भूमिकम्पेन महानिव शिलोच्चयः।।5.35.46।।

tavādarśanaśokena rāghavḥ pravicālyate| mahatā bhūmikampena mahāniva śiloccayḥ||5.35.46||

Translation

तव your, अदर्शनशोकेन by the sorrow of not being able to see you, राघवः Rama of Raghu dynasty, महता with great, भूमिकम्पेन by earthquake, महान् great, शिलोच्छयः lofty mountain, प्रविचाल्यते is shaken.

Meaning

"On account of sorrow caused by not being able to see you, Rama of Raghu dynasty is shaken up like a lofty mountain is shaken by earthquake.

SK-35-47Sundara Kanda 35.47

काननानि सुरम्याणि नदीः प्रस्रवणानि च। चरन्न रतिमाप्नोति त्वामपश्यन्नृपात्मजे।।5.35.47।।

kānanāni suramyāṇi nadīḥ prasravaṇāni ca| caranna ratimāpnoti tvāmapaśyannṛpātmaje||5.35.47||

Translation

नृपात्मजे daughter of a king, त्वाम् you, अपश्यन् unable to see, सुरम्याणि very delightful, काननानि forests, नदीः rivers, प्रस्रवणानि च and streams, चरन् while moving, रतिम् happiness, न आप्नोति not finding.

Meaning

"Oh princess unable to see you, Rama has found no joy in roaming delightful forests, rivers and streams.

SK-35-48Sundara Kanda 35.48

स त्वां मनुजशार्दूलः क्षिप्रं प्राप्स्यति राघवः। समित्रबान्धवं हत्वा रावणं जनकात्मजे।।5.35.48।।

sa tvāṃ manujaśārdūlḥ kṣiprṃ prāpsyati rāghavḥ| samitrabāndhavṃ hatvā rāvaṇṃ janakātmaje||5.35.48||

Translation

जनकात्मजे Oh daughter of Janaka, मनुजशार्दूलः a tiger among men, सः राघवः that Rama, समित्रबान्धवम् along with his friends and relatives, रावणम् Ravana, हत्वा after killing, त्वाम् you, क्षिप्रम् soon, प्राप्स्यति will attain.

Meaning

"Oh daughter of Janaka after killing Ravana, along with his friends and relatives Rama, the tiger among men, will meet you.

SK-35-49Sundara Kanda 35.49

सहितौ रामसुग्रीवावुभावकुरुतां तदा। समयं वालिनं हन्तुं तव चान्वेषणं तथा।।5.35.49।।

sahitau rāmasugrīvāvubhāvakurutāṃ tadā| samayṃ vālinṃ hantuṃ tava cānveṣaṇṃ tathā||5.35.49||

Translation

तदा then, रामसुग्रीवौ Rama and Sugriva, उभौ both, सहितौ together with, वालिनम् Vali, हन्तुम् to kill, तथा likewise, तव your, अन्वेषणम् search, समयम् agreement, अकुरुताम् reached.

Meaning

"(Having become friends) Rama and Sugriva together reached an agreement to kill Vali and search for you.

SK-35-50Sundara Kanda 35.50

ततस्ताभ्यां कुमाराभ्यां वीराभ्यां स हरीश्वरः। किष्किन्धां समुपागम्य वाली युद्धे निपातितः।।5.35.50।।

tatastābhyāṃ kumārābhyāṃ vīrābhyāṃ sa harīśvarḥ| kiṣkindhāṃ samupāgamya vālī yuddhe nipātitḥ||5.35.50||

Translation

ततः thereafter, वीराभ्याम् by both the heroes, ताभ्याम् by both of them, कुमाराभ्याम् by both princes, किष्किन्धाम् to Kishkinda, समुपागम्य after reaching, हरीश्वरः king of vanaras, सः that, वाली Vali, युद्धे in war, निपातितः killed.

Meaning

"Thereafter both the princes together arrived at Kishkinda and killed Vali, king of vanaras in a combat.

SK-35-51Sundara Kanda 35.51

ततो निहत्य तरसा रामो वालिनमाहवे। सर्वर्क्षहरिसङ्घानां सुग्रीवमकरोत्पतिम्।।5.35.51।।

tato nihatya tarasā rāmo vālinamāhave| sarvarkṣaharisaṅghānāṃ sugrīvamakarotpatim||5.35.51||

Translation

ततः then, रामः Rama, आहवे in a combat, तरसा quickly, वालिनम् Vali, निहत्य killed, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, सर्वर्क्षहरिसङ्घानाम् for all troops of vanaras, पतिम् king, अकरोत् made.

Meaning

"Then Rama quickly killed Vali in a combat and made Sugriva the lord of all troops of vanaras and bears.

SK-35-52Sundara Kanda 35.52

रामसुग्रीवयोरैक्यं देव्येवं समजायत। हनुमन्तं च मां विद्धि तयोर्दूतमिहागतम्।।5.35.52।।

rāmasugrīvayoraikyṃ devyevṃ samajāyata| hanumantṃ ca māṃ viddhi tayordūtamihāgatam||5.35.52||

Translation

देवि Oh Illustrious lady, रामसुग्रीवयोः of both Rama and Sugriva, ऐक्यम् alliance, एवम् in that way, समजायत established, माम् me, तयोः their, दूतम् messenger, आगतम् came here, हनुमन्तम् Hanuman, विद्धि you may know.

Meaning

"Oh Illustrious lady In that manner alliance was established between Rama and Sugriva. Know me to be Hanuman, arrived here as their messenger.

SK-35-53Sundara Kanda 35.53

स्वराज्यं प्राप्य सुग्रीवस्समानीय हरीश्वरान्। त्वदर्थं प्रेषयामास दिशो दश महाबलान्।।5.35.53।।

svarājyṃ prāpya sugrīvassamānīya harīśvarān| tvadarthṃ preṣayāmāsa diśo daśa mahābalān||5.35.53||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, स्वराज्यम् his kingdom, प्राप्य having obtained, महाबलान् great army, हरीश्वरान् monkey leaders, समानीय after collecting, त्वदर्थम् for your sake, दश ten, दिशः directions, प्रेषयामास sent.

Meaning

"Having obtained his kingdom Sugriva despatched the vanara leaders to all ten directions (to search for you).

SK-35-54Sundara Kanda 35.54

आदिष्टा वानरेन्द्रेण सुग्रीवेण महौजसा। अद्रिराजप्रतीकाशास्सर्वतः प्रस्थितौ महीम्।।5.35.54।।

वानरेन्द्रेण by the monkey leaders, महौजसा very powerful one, सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, आदिष्टाः ordered, अद्रिराजप्रतीकाशाः huge as the Himalayas, king of mountains, सर्वतः all over, महीम् the earth, प्रस्थिता started moving.

Meaning

"Following Sugriva's orders, the powerful monkey leaders huge as the Himalayas, king of mountains went all over the earth (searching).

SK-35-55Sundara Kanda 35.55

ततस्ते मार्गमाणा वै सुग्रीववचनातुराः। चरन्ति वसुधां कृत्स्नां वयमन्ये च वानराः।।5.35.55।।

tataste mārgamāṇā vai sugrīvavacanāturāḥ| caranti vasudhāṃ kṛtsnāṃ vayamanye ca vānarāḥ||5.35.55||

Translation

ततः then, ते they, वयम् we, अन्ये others, वानराः च and the vanaras, सुग्रीववचनातुराः eager to carry out Sugriva's order, मार्गमाणाः while searching, कृत्स्नाम् entire, वसुधाम् the earth, चरन्ति we are moving about.

Meaning

"Following Sugriva's orders, we, the monkeys, since then are moving about searching the entire earth eager to find you or to carry out Sugriva's orders.

अङ्गदो नाम लक्ष्मीवान्वालिसूनुर्महाबलः। प्रस्थितः कपिशार्दूलस्त्रिभागबलसंवृतः।।5.35.56।।

aṅgado nāma lakṣmīvānvālisūnurmahābalḥ| prasthitḥ kapiśārdūlastribhāgabalasṃvṛtḥ||5.35.56||

Translation

लक्ष्मीवान् prosperous, वालिसूनुः Vali's son, महाबलः mighty, अङ्गदो नाम called Angada, हरिशार्दूलः a tiger among vanaras, त्रिभागबलसंवृतः together with one third of the army, प्रस्थितः departed.

तेषां नो विप्रणष्टानां विन्ध्ये पर्वतसत्तमे। भृशं शोकपरीतानामहोरात्रगणा गताः।।5.35.57।।

"We wasted many nights and days immersed in disappointment (for not being able to find you) and we missed our path in the great Vindhya mountain.

ते वयं कार्यनैराश्यात्कालस्यातिक्रमेण च। भयाच्च कपिराजस्य प्राणांस्त्यक्तुं व्यवस्थिताः।।5.35.58।।

te vayṃ kāryanairāśyātkālasyātikrameṇa ca| bhayācca kapirājasya prāṇāṃstyaktuṃ vyavasthitāḥ||5.35.58||

Translation

ते वयम् we were, कार्यनैराश्यात् disappointed, कालस्य of the time limit, अतिक्रमेण च exceeding, कपिराजस्य of monkey king's, भयाच्च out of fear also, प्राणान् life also, त्यक्तुम् to give up, व्यवस्थिताः decided.

Meaning

"We decided to give up our lives due to disappointment, transgression of the time limit fixed for us and fear of the monkey lord (fear of facing the king without finding you).

SK-35-59Sundara Kanda 35.59

विचित्य वनदुर्गाणि गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च। अनासाद्य पदं देव्याः प्राणांस्त्यक्तुं समुद्यताः।।5.35.59।।

vicitya vanadurgāṇi giriprasravaṇāni ca| anāsādya padṃ devyāḥ prāṇāṃstyaktuṃ samudyatāḥ||5.35.59||

Translation

वनदुर्गाणि impenetrable forest forts, गिरिप्रस्रवणानि च mountain streams, विचित्य having searched, देव्याः the queen's, पदम् feet, अनासाद्य by not getting, प्राणान् life, त्यक्तुम् to give up, समुद्यताः we decided.

Meaning

"We decided to give up our lives since we were unable to see the feet of the queen (Sita) even after searching the forest fortresses and the (banks of) mountain streams.

दृष्ट्वा प्रायोपविष्टांश्च सर्वान्वानरपुङ्गवान्। भृशं शोकार्णवे मग्नः पर्यदेवयदङ्गदः।।5.35.60।। तव नाशं च वैदेहि वालिनश्च वधं तथा। प्रायोपवेशमस्माकं मरणं च जटायुषः।।5.35.61।।

dṛṣṭvā prāyopaviṣṭāṃśca sarvānvānarapuṅgavān| bhṛśṃ śokārṇave magnḥ paryadevayadaṅgadḥ||5.35.60|| tava nāśṃ ca vaidehi vālinaśca vadhṃ tathā| prāyopaveśamasmākṃ maraṇṃ ca jaṭāyuṣḥ||5.35.61||

Translation

वैदेहि oh Vaidehi, प्रायोपविष्टान् when we decided to die, सर्वान् all, वानरपुङ्गवान् vanara leaders, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, अङ्गदः Angada, भृशम् intensely, शोकार्णवे in the sea of sorrow, मग्नः plunged, तव yourself, नाशं च not found, तथा वालिनः similarly Vali's, वधं च and his killing, जटायुषः Jatayu's, मरणं च death also, अस्माकम् all of us, प्रायोपवेशम् decision to die, पर्यदेवयत् he was grieved.

SK-35-62Sundara Kanda 35.62

तेषां नस्वामिसन्देशान्निराशानां मुमूर्षताम्। कार्यहेतोरिवायातश्शकुनिर्वीर्यवान्महान्।।5.35.62।।

teṣāṃ nasvāmisandeśānnirāśānāṃ mumūrṣatām| kāryahetorivāyātaśśakunirvīryavānmahān||5.35.62||

Translation

स्वामिसन्देशात् according to the king's cmmand (that who ever overstays would be killed), निराशानाम् disappointed, मुमूर्षताम् when we were desiring to die, तेषाम् for such of us, नः to us, कार्यहेतोरिव as if to fulfil the task, वीर्यवान् powerful, महान् gigantic, शकुनिः bird, आयातः came.

Meaning

"When we were disappointed (in tracing you) and were at the point of death having been commanded by the king (that whosoever overstays would be killed) a gigantic powerful bird appeared to fulfil our task.

SK-35-63Sundara Kanda 35.63

गृध्रराजस्य सोदर्यः सम्पातिर्नाम गृध्रराट्। श्रुत्वा भ्रातृवधं कोपादिदं वचनमब्रवीत्।।5.35.63।।

gṛdhrarājasya sodaryḥ sampātirnāma gṛdhrarāṭ| śrutvā bhrātṛvadhṃ kopādidṃ vacanamabravīt||5.35.63||

Translation

गृध्रराजस्य of the king of vultures, सोदर्यः brother, सम्पातिर्नाम called Sampati, गृध्रराट् king of birds, भ्रातृवधम् death of Jatayu, श्रुत्वा on hearing, कोपात् with anger, इदम् this, वचनम् word, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

"That king of vultures, Sampati was the brother of king of birds Jatayu. Hearing about the death of his younger brother Sampati felt distresed and spoke in anger:

SK-35-64Sundara Kanda 35.64

यवीयान्केन मे भ्राता हतः क्व च निपातितः। एतदाख्यातुमिच्छामि भवद्भिर्वानरोत्तमाः।।5.35.64।।

yavīyānkena me bhrātā hatḥ kva ca nipātitḥ| etadākhyātumicchāmi bhavadbhirvānarottamāḥ||5.35.64||

Translation

मे my, यवीयान् younger, भ्राता brother, केन by whom, हतः was killed, क्व where, निपातितः was he dropped, वानरोत्तमाः of best of vanaras, भवद्भिः by you, एतत् this, आख्यातुम् to tell, इच्छामि I desire.

Meaning

'O best of vanaras by whom was my younger brother killed? Where was he dropped down? I wish you to tell me all about that.

SK-35-65Sundara Kanda 35.65

अङ्गदोऽकथयत्तस्य जनस्थाने महद्वधम्। रक्षसा भीमरूपेण त्वामुद्दिश्य यथातथम्।।5.35.65।।

aṅgado'kathayattasya janasthāne mahadvadham| rakṣasā bhīmarūpeṇa tvāmuddiśya yathātatham||5.35.65||

Translation

त्वाम् you, उद्दिश्य aiming at, भीमरूपेण by a dreadful person, रक्षसा by the demon, जनस्थाने in Janasthana, महद्वधम् great killing, यथातथम् as it happened faithfully, अङ्गदः Angada, तस्य to him, अकथयत् told.

SK-35-66Sundara Kanda 35.66

जटायुषो वधं श्रुत्वा दुःखितस्सोऽरुणात्मजः। त्वां शशंस वरारोहे वसन्तीं रावणालये।।5.35.66।।

jaṭāyuṣo vadhṃ śrutvā duḥkhitasso'ruṇātmajḥ| tvāṃ śaśṃsa varārohe vasantīṃ rāvaṇālaye||5.35.66||

Translation

वरारोहे oh charming lady, सः he, अरुणात्मजः Aruna's son, जटायुषः Jatayu's, वधं death, श्रुत्वा having heard, दुःखितः became sad, त्वाम् yourself, रावणालये in Ravana's palace, वसन्तीम् living, शशंस narrated to us.

Meaning

"Having heard about the death of Jatayu, O charming lady that Sampati Aruna's son felt sad and told us that you are at Ravana's palace.

SK-35-67Sundara Kanda 35.67

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सम्पातेः प्रीतिवर्धनम्। अङ्गदप्रमुखास्तूर्णं ततस्सम्प्रस्थिता वयम्।।5.35.67।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā sampāteḥ prītivardhanam| aṅgadapramukhāstūrṇṃ tatassamprasthitā vayam||5.35.67||

Translation

तस्य his, सम्पातेः Samapati's, प्रीतिवर्धनम् that which was pleasing, तत् that, वचनम् word, श्रुत्वा having heard, अङ्गदप्रमुखाः Angada and others, वयम् all of us, तूर्णम् quickly, ततः from there, प्रस्थिताः departed.

Meaning

"Having heard Sampati's encouraging words all of us led by Angada departed immediately.

SK-35-68Sundara Kanda 35.68

विन्ध्यादुत्थाय सम्प्राप्ता स्सागरस्यान्तमुत्तरम्। त्वद्धर्शनकृतोत्साहा हृष्टास्तुष्टाः प्लवङ्गमाः।।5.35.68।।

vindhyādutthāya samprāptā ssāgarasyāntamuttaram| tvaddharśanakṛtotsāhā hṛṣṭāstuṣṭāḥ plavaṅgamāḥ||5.35.68||

Translation

प्लवङ्गमाः vanaras, त्वद्दर्शनकृतोत्साहा enthused to see you, हृष्टाः joyfully, तुष्टाः satisfied, विन्ध्यात् from Vindhya, उत्थाय having got up, सागरस्य towards the sea, उत्तरम् अन्तम् the limit of the northern direction, सम्प्राप्ताः reached.

Meaning

"The happy monkeys were satisfied. Enthusiastic about seeing you, they rose from the Vindhya mountain and reached the limit of the sea shore in the north.

SK-35-69Sundara Kanda 35.69

अङ्गदप्रमुखास्सर्वे वेलोपान्तमुपस्थिताः। चिन्तां जग्मुः पुनर्भीतास्त्वद्दर्शनसमुत्सुकाः।।5.35.69।।

aṅgadapramukhāssarve velopāntamupasthitāḥ| cintāṃ jagmuḥ punarbhītāstvaddarśanasamutsukāḥ||5.35.69||

Translation

अङ्गदप्रमुखाः Angada and other leaders, सर्वे all, त्वद्दर्शनमुत्सुकाः enthusiastic to see you, वेलोपान्तम् sea shore, उपस्थिताः reached, भीताः they were frightened, पुनः again, चिन्ताम् worry, जग्मुः felt.

SK-35-70Sundara Kanda 35.70

अथाहं हरिसैन्यस्य सागरं प्रेक्ष्य सीदतः। व्यवधूय भयं तीव्रं योजनानां शतं प्लुतः।।5.35.70।।

athāhṃ harisainyasya sāgarṃ prekṣya sīdatḥ| vyavadhūya bhayṃ tīvrṃ yojanānāṃ śatṃ plutḥ||5.35.70||

Translation

अथ then, अहम् I, सागरम् ocean, प्रेक्ष्य after looking at, सीदतः in desperate mood, हरिसैन्यस्य Vanara army's, तीव्रम् intense, भयम् fear, व्यवधूय after pushing aside, योजनानाम् of yojanas, शतम् one hundred, प्लुतः leaped.

Meaning

"When the vanara army was feeling despondent at the sight of the ocean, I leaped across the sea, a hundred yojanas, pushing aside all my fear.

SK-35-71Sundara Kanda 35.71

लङ्का चापि मया रात्रौ प्रविष्टा राक्षसाकुला। रावणश्च मया दृष्टस्त्वं च शोकपरिप्लुता।।5.35.71।।

laṅkā cāpi mayā rātrau praviṣṭā rākṣasākulā| rāvaṇaśca mayā dṛṣṭastvṃ ca śokapariplutā||5.35.71||

Translation

राक्षसाकुला filled with demons, लङ्का चापि Lanka also, मया by me, रात्रौ at night, प्रविष्टा entered, मया by me, रावणश्च Ravana also, दृष्टः is seen, शोकपरिप्लुता immersed in sorrow, त्वं च you also.

Meaning

"I entered at night the city of Lanka teeming with demons and saw Ravana and saw you immersed in sorrow.

SK-35-72Sundara Kanda 35.72

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं यथावृत्तमनन्दिते। अभिभाषस्व मां देवि दूतो दाशरथेरहम्।।5.35.72।।

etatte sarvamākhyātṃ yathāvṛttamanandite| abhibhāṣasva māṃ devi dūto dāśaratheraham||5.35.72||

Translation

अनिन्दिते O sinless lady, देवि O divine lady, एतत् this, सर्वम् everything, यथावृत्तम् as it happened, ते to you, आख्यातम् narrated, माम् me, अभिभाषस्व you may speak, अहम् I, दाशरथेः Dasaratha's son, दूतः messenger.

Meaning

"O sinless lady I have given you a faithful account. I am a messenger of Dasaratha's son. And you may speak now, O divine lady

SK-35-73Sundara Kanda 35.73

तं मां रामकृतोद्योगं त्वन्निमित्तमिहागतम्। सुग्रीवसचिवं देवि बुद्ध्यस्व पवनात्मजम्।।5.35.73।।

tṃ māṃ rāmakṛtodyogṃ tvannimittamihāgatam| sugrīvasacivṃ devi buddhyasva pavanātmajam||5.35.73||

Translation

देवि O divine lady, तं माम् such me, रामकृतोद्योगम् have taken up Rama's mission, त्वन्निमित्तम् on your account, इह here, आगतम् came, सुग्रीवसचिवम् minister of Sugriva, पवनात्मजम् son of Vayu, बुद्ध्यस्व you may know.

Meaning

"O divine lady Know that I have come here for your cause carrying out the mission of Rama. I am Sugriva'a minister and son of the Windgod.

SK-35-74Sundara Kanda 35.74

कुशली तव काकुत्स्थस्सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः। गुरोराराधने युक्तो लक्ष्मणश्च सुलक्षणः।।5.35.74।।

kuśalī tava kākutsthassarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varḥ| gurorārādhane yukto lakṣmaṇaśca sulakṣaṇḥ||5.35.74||

Translation

सर्वशस्त्रभृताम् among all wielders of weapons, वरः supreme, तव your, काकुत्स्थ Rama of the Kakutstha race, कुशली he is keeping well, गुरोः of his venerable teacher, आराधने in service, युक्तः engaged, सुलक्षणः a man of auspicious signs, लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana also.

Meaning

"Your lord Rama of Kakutstha race, supreme among wielders of weapons is doing well. So is venerable Lakshmana endowed with auspicious signs engaged in serving him.

SK-35-75Sundara Kanda 35.75

तस्य वीर्यवतो देवि भर्तुस्तव हिते रतः। अहमेकस्तु सम्प्राप्त स्सुग्रीववचनादिह।।5.35.75।।

tasya vīryavato devi bhartustava hite ratḥ| ahamekastu samprāpta ssugrīvavacanādiha||5.35.75||

Translation

देवि O queen, वीर्यवतः of valourous, तव your, भर्तुः husband's, तस्य his, हिते seeking welfare, रतः engaged, अहम् I, सुग्रीववचनात् at the behest of Sugriva, इह here, एकः alone, प्राप्तः reached.

Meaning

"O queen seeking the welfare of your Valiant husband I came here at the behest of Sugriva all alone.

SK-35-76Sundara Kanda 35.76

मयेयमसहायेन चरता कामरूपिणा। दक्षिणा दिगनुक्रान्ता त्वन्मार्गविचयैषिणा।।5.35.76।।

mayeyamasahāyena caratā kāmarūpiṇā| dakṣiṇā diganukrāntā tvanmārgavicayaiṣiṇā||5.35.76||

Translation

त्वन्मार्गविचयैषिणा while searching for your location, कामरूपिणा by a person who can take any form at will, असहायेन without any help, चरता while moving, मया by myself, इयम् this, दक्षिणा दिक् southern direction, अनुक्रान्ता reached.

Meaning

"I can assume any form at my will. I searched for you without any help moving in the southern direction and reached this place .

SK-35-77Sundara Kanda 35.77

दिष्ट्याहं हरिसैन्यानां त्वन्नाशमनुशोचताम्। अपनेष्यामि सन्तापं तवाभिगमशंसनात्।।5.35.77।।

diṣṭyāhṃ harisainyānāṃ tvannāśamanuśocatām| apaneṣyāmi santāpṃ tavābhigamaśṃsanāt||5.35.77||

Translation

दिष्ट्या fortunately for me, अहम् I, त्वन्नाशम् your loss, अनुशोचताम् regretting, हरिसैन्यानाम् of the vanara army, सन्तापम् grief, तव your, अभिगमशंसनात् by letting them know, अपनेष्यामि I will dispel their sorrow.

Meaning

"Fortunately for me I can finally dispel the fear of the vanara chiefs who are regretting your loss, by letting them know that you have been found.

SK-35-78Sundara Kanda 35.78

दिष्ट्या हि मम न व्यर्थं देवि सागरलङ्घनम्। प्राप्स्याम्यहमिदं दिष्ट्या त्वद्दर्शनकृतं यशः।।5.35.78।।

diṣṭyā hi mama na vyarthṃ devi sāgaralaṅghanam| prāpsyāmyahamidṃ diṣṭyā tvaddarśanakṛtṃ yaśḥ||5.35.78||

Translation

देवि oh queen, दिष्ट्या luckily, मम my, सागरलङ्घनम् crossing the ocean, न व्यर्थम् is not wasted, दिष्ट्या fortunately, अहम् I, त्वद्दर्शनकृतम् by the act of seeing you, इदम् thus, यशः fame, प्राप्स्यामि I will attain.

Meaning

"Oh queen luckily for me, crossing the ocean has not gone in vain. I am fortunate because I will attain fame of finding you.

SK-35-79Sundara Kanda 35.79

राघवश्च महावीर्यः क्षिप्रं त्वामभिपत्स्यते। समित्रबान्धवं हत्वा रावणं राक्षसाधिपम्।।5.35.79।।

rāghavaśca mahāvīryḥ kṣiprṃ tvāmabhipatsyate| samitrabāndhavṃ hatvā rāvaṇṃ rākṣasādhipam||5.35.79||

Translation

महावीर्यः mighty hero, राघवश्च Raghava, समित्रबान्धवम् accompanied by friends and relatives, राक्षसाधिपम् king of demons, रावणम् Ravana, हत्वा after killing, क्षिप्रम् very soon, त्वाम् yourself, अभिपत्स्यते will reach you.

Meaning

"Mighty Raghava will take you after killing Ravana, the king of demons along with his kith and kin.

SK-35-80Sundara Kanda 35.80

माल्यवान्नाम वैदेहि गिरीणामुत्तमो गिरिः। ततो गच्छति गोकर्णं पर्वतं केसरी हरिः।।5.35.80।।

mālyavānnāma vaidehi girīṇāmuttamo giriḥ| tato gacchati gokarṇṃ parvatṃ kesarī hariḥ||5.35.80||

Translation

वैदेहि Vaidehi, गिरीणाम् among the mountains, उत्तमः the best one, माल्यवान्नाम Malyavan, गिरिः mountain, ततः from there, केसरी Kesari, हरिः monkey, गोकर्णम् Gokarna, पर्वतम् mountain, गच्छति went.

Meaning

"Oh Vaidehi there is a famous mountain called Malyavan. From there a monkey called Kesari went to mount Gokarna.

SK-35-81Sundara Kanda 35.81

स च देवर्षिभिर्दिष्टः पिता मम महाकपिः। तीर्थे नदीपतेः पुण्ये शम्बसादनमुद्धरत्।।5.35.81।।

sa ca devarṣibhirdiṣṭḥ pitā mama mahākapiḥ| tīrthe nadīpateḥ puṇye śambasādanamuddharat||5.35.81||

Translation

देवर्षिभिः by the divine sages, दिष्टः predicted, मम my, पिता father, सः महाकपिः that great monkey, नदीपतेः of lord of rivers, ocean, पुण्ये holy, तीर्थे in a place, शम्बसादनम् Sambasadanam, उद्धरत् raised.

Meaning

"He (Kesari) is said to be my father by the divine sages. He retrieved a piece of land in a holy spot of that sea shore and killed Sambasadana, a demon who was oppressing righteous people.

SK-35-82Sundara Kanda 35.82

तस्याहं हरिणः क्षेत्रे जातो वातेन मैथिलि। हनुमानिति विख्यातो लोके स्वेनैव कर्मणा।।5.35.82।।

tasyāhṃ hariṇḥ kṣetre jāto vātena maithili| hanumāniti vikhyāto loke svenaiva karmaṇā||5.35.82||

Translation

मैथिलि Mythili, अहम् I, तस्य his, हरिणः monkey's, क्षेत्रे in the land, वातेन by the Windgod, जातः born, स्वेन कर्मणा एव by my own act, लोके by people, हनुमानिति Hanuman, विख्यातः came to be known.

Meaning

"O Mythili I was born in that land retrieved by the Windgod. I am known as Hanuman by virtue of my own action.

SK-35-83Sundara Kanda 35.83

विश्वासार्थं तु वैदेहि भर्तुरुक्ता मया गुणाः। अचिराद्राघवो देवि त्वामितो नयिताऽनघे।।5.35.83।।

viśvāsārthṃ tu vaidehi bharturuktā mayā guṇāḥ| acirādrāghavo devi tvāmito nayitā'naghe||5.35.83||

Translation

वैदेहि Vaidehi, विश्वासार्थम् for inspiring confidence, मया by me, भर्तुः your husband's, गुणाः qualities, उक्ताः are described, देवि O queen, राघवः Raghava, अचिरात् very soon, त्वाम् you, इतः from here, नयिता he will take you away, अनघे lady free from sins.

Meaning

"In order to inspire confidence in you about me I have narrated the virtues of your husband. O sinless queen Rama will take you from here very soon".

SK-35-84Sundara Kanda 35.84

एवं विश्वासिता सीता हेतुभिश्शोककर्शिता। उपपन्नैरभिज्ञानैर्दूतं तमवगच्छति।।5.35.84।।

evṃ viśvāsitā sītā hetubhiśśokakarśitā| upapannairabhijñānairdūtṃ tamavagacchati||5.35.84||

Translation

शोककर्शिता tormented by grief, सीता Sita, एवम् in that way, हेतुभिः with possible reasons, विश्वासिता having trusted, उपपन्नैः by the evidences, अभिज्ञानैः with identification, तम् him, दूतम् as a messenger, अवगच्छति she understood.

Meaning

The griefstricken Sita trusted him by his logical presentation of reasons as well as identifications. She believed that he was a messenger (of Rama).

SK-35-85Sundara Kanda 35.85

अतुलं च गता हर्षं प्रहर्षेण च जानकी। नेत्राभ्यां वक्रपक्ष्माभ्यां मुमोचानन्दजं जलम्।।5.35.85।।

atulṃ ca gatā harṣṃ praharṣeṇa ca jānakī| netrābhyāṃ vakrapakṣmābhyāṃ mumocānandajṃ jalam||5.35.85||

Translation

जानकी Janaki, अतुलम् immeasurable, हर्षम् happiness, गता च experienced, प्रहर्षेण in her joy, वक्रपक्ष्माभ्याम् through her curved eyelashes, नेत्राभ्याम् from both eyes, आनन्दजम् arising out of joy, जलम् tears, मुमोच shed.

Meaning

Janaki experienced immeasurable happiness and shed tears of joy through her curved eyes.

SK-35-86Sundara Kanda 35.86

चारु तद्वदनं तस्यास्ताम्रशुक्लायतेक्षणम्। अशोभत विशालाक्ष्या राहुमुक्त इवोडुराट्।।5.35.86।।

cāru tadvadanṃ tasyāstāmraśuklāyatekṣaṇam| aśobhata viśālākṣyā rāhumukta ivoḍurāṭ||5.35.86||

Translation

विशालाक्ष्याः of largeeyed lady, तस्याः her, चारु lovely, ताम्रशुक्लायतेक्षणम् having wide white eyes with tinge of red corners, तत् that, वदनम् face, राहुमुक्तः released from Rahu, उडुराडिव like the Moon, अशोभत shone.

Meaning

Her face with large eyes with a tinge of red corners shone like the Moon released from Rahu.

SK-35-87Sundara Kanda 35.87

हनुमन्तं कपिं व्यक्तं मन्यते नान्यथेति सा। अथोवाच हनूमांस्तामुत्तरं प्रियदर्शनाम्।।5.35.87।।

hanumantṃ kapiṃ vyaktṃ manyate nānyatheti sā| athovāca hanūmāṃstāmuttarṃ priyadarśanām||5.35.87||

Translation

सा she, हनुमन्तम् Hanuman, व्यक्तम् clearly, कपिम् the monkey, मन्यते realised, अन्यथा इति none other than, अथ then, हनूमान् Hanuman, प्रियदर्शनाम् a lady pleasing to see, ताम् her, उत्तराम् later, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

She realised that the monkey was none other than Hanuman. Then he looked at her who was pleasing to see and spoke again:

SK-35-88Sundara Kanda 35.88

एतत्ते सर्वमाख्यातं समाश्वसिहि मैथिलि। किं करोमि कथं वा ते रोचते प्रतियाम्यहम्।।5.35.88।।

etatte sarvamākhyātṃ samāśvasihi maithili| kiṃ karomi kathṃ vā te rocate pratiyāmyaham||5.35.88||

Translation

मैथिलि Mythili, ते to you, एतत् सर्वम् everything, आख्यातम् is narrated, समाश्वसिहि calm down, किम् what, करोमि shall I do, ते to you, कथं वा or how, रोचते it pleases, अहम् I, प्रतियामि I will go back.

Meaning

"Mythili, everything I intended to say has been narrated to you. Calm yourself down. What shall I do? Or else, tell me what pleases you. I shall go back.

SK-35-89Sundara Kanda 35.89

हतेऽसुरे संयति शम्बसादने कपिप्रवीरेण महर्षिचोदनात्। ततोऽस्मि वायुप्रभवो हि मैथिलि प्रभावतस्तत्प्रतिमश्च वानरः।।5.35.89।।

hate'sure sṃyati śambasādane kapipravīreṇa maharṣicodanāt| tato'smi vāyuprabhavo hi maithili prabhāvatastatpratimaśca vānarḥ||5.35.89||

Translation

मैथिलि Maithili, संयति in a fight, शम्बसादने Sambasadana, असुरे when the demon, कपिप्रवरेण mighty monkey, महर्षिचोदनात् by the command of great sage, हते सति where he was slain, अथ then, वायुप्रभवः by the spread of wind, प्रभावतः by his prowess, तत्प्रतिमः equal to him, वानरः vanara, अस्मि I am.

Meaning

"(My father) a mighty monkey killed Sambasadana in a battle on the command of a great seer. I am a vanara (born to a monkey) by the impact of the Windgod. I am equal to the Windgod in power." इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे पञ्चत्रिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the thirtyfifth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
