KK-51-1Kishkindha Kanda 51.1

इत्युक्त्वा हनुमांस्तत्र पुनः कृष्णाजिनाम्बराम्। अब्रवीत्तां महाभागां तापसीं धर्मचारिणीम्।।4.51.1।।

ityuktvā hanumāṃstatra punḥ kṛṣṇājināmbarām| abravīttāṃ mahābhāgāṃ tāpasīṃ dharmacāriṇīm||4.51.1||

Translation

तत्र there, हनुमान् Hanuman, इति thus, उक्त्वा having addressed, पुनः again, कृष्णाजिनाम्बराम् robed in deer skin, महाभागाम् a distinguished lady, धर्मचारिणीम् a righteous woman, तां तापसीम् ascetic woman, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

On meeting the distinguished, righteous ascetic woman robed in deer skin, Hanuman said:

KK-51-2Kishkindha Kanda 51.2

इदं प्रविष्टास्सहसा बिलं तिमिरसंवृतम्। क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ताः परिखिन्नाश्च सर्वशः।।4.51.2।।

idṃ praviṣṭāssahasā bilṃ timirasṃvṛtam| kṣutpipāsāpariśrāntāḥ parikhinnāśca sarvaśḥ||4.51.2||

Translation

क्षुत्पिपासापरिश्रान्ताः exhausted with hunger and thirst, सर्वशः by all means, परिखिन्नाश्च fatigued, तिमिरसंवृतम् filled with darkness, इदम् this, बिलम् cave, सहसा all at once, प्रविष्टाः entered.

Meaning

'We are exhausted with thirst and hunger. We are fatigued. (Hence) we entered this dark cave all at once(without waiting for permission).

KK-51-3Kishkindha Kanda 51.3

महद्धरण्या विवरं प्रविष्टाः स्म पिपासिताः। इमां स्त्वेवंविधान्भावान्विविधानद्भुतोपमान्।।4.51.3।। दृष्ट्वा वयं प्रव्यथितास्सम्भ्रान्ता नष्टचेतसः।

mahaddharaṇyā vivarṃ praviṣṭāḥ sma pipāsitāḥ| imāṃ stvevṃvidhānbhāvānvividhānadbhutopamān||4.51.3|| dṛṣṭvā vayṃ pravyathitāssambhrāntā naṣṭacetasḥ|

Translation

पिपासिताः thirsty, धरण्याः of the earth, महत् huge, विवरम् hole, प्रविष्टाः स्म we entered, एवं विधान् this kind, विविधान् many, अद्भुतोपमान् wonderful ones, इमान् these, भावान् feelings, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, वयम् we, नष्टचेतसः having lost conciousness nearly, सम्भ्रान्ताः amazed, प्रव्यथिताः we are pained.

Meaning

'Thirst drove us into this cave on earth. We are amazed at the kind of many wonderful objects here and have nearly lost our senses. We are tormented with pain.

KK-51-4-5Kishkindha Kanda 51.4–5 (युग्मम्)

कस्यैते काञ्चना वृक्षास्तरुणादित्यसन्निभाः।।4.51.4।। शुचीन्यभ्यवहार्याणि मूलानि च फलानि च। काञ्चनानि विमानानि राजतानि गृहाणि च।।4.51.5।। तपनीयगवाक्षाणि मणिजालावृतानि च।

kasyaite kāñcanā vṛkṣāstaruṇādityasannibhāḥ||4.51.4|| śucīnyabhyavahāryāṇi mūlāni ca phalāni ca| kāñcanāni vimānāni rājatāni gṛhāṇi ca||4.51.5|| tapanīyagavākṣāṇi maṇijālāvṛtāni ca|

Translation

एते these, तरुणादित्यसन्निभाः resembling like the rising Sun, काञ्चनाः golden, वृक्षाः trees, शुचीनि pure, अभ्यवहार्याणि very tasty eatables, मूलानि च roots, फलानि च and fruits, काञ्चनानि golden, विमानानि storeyed structures, राजतानि silver, तपनीय गवाक्षाणि glittering golden windows, मणिजालावृतानि adorned with lattices encrusted with gems, गृहाणि च and houses, कस्य whose?

Meaning

'To whom do these golden trees resembling the rising Sun belong? For whom are these tasty roots and fruits? Whose are these manystoreyed golden houses with glittering windows adorned with silver lattices encrusted with gems?

KK-51-6-8Kishkindha Kanda 51.6–8 (त्रिकम्)

पुष्पिताः फलवन्तश्च पुण्यास्सुरभिगन्धिनः।।4.51.6।। इमे जाम्बूनदमयाः पादपाः कस्य तेजसा। काञ्चनानि च पद्मानि जातानि विमले जले।।4.51.7।। कथं मत्स्याश्च सौवर्णा दृश्यन्ते सह कच्छपैः। आत्मानमनुभावं च कस्य चैतत्तपोबलम्।।4.51.8।। अजानतां न स्सर्वेषां सर्वमाख्यातुमर्हसि।

puṣpitāḥ phalavantaśca puṇyāssurabhigandhinḥ||4.51.6|| ime jāmbūnadamayāḥ pādapāḥ kasya tejasā| kāñcanāni ca padmāni jātāni vimale jale||4.51.7|| kathṃ matsyāśca sauvarṇā dṛśyante saha kacchapaiḥ| ātmānamanubhāvṃ ca kasya caitattapobalam||4.51.8|| ajānatāṃ na ssarveṣāṃ sarvamākhyātumarhasi|

Translation

पुष्पिताः blossomed, फलवन्तश्च full of fruits, पुण्याः sacred, सुरभिगन्धिनः filled with fragrance, इमे these, जाम्बूनदमयाः full of gold, पादपाः trees, विमले in pure, जले in water, काञ्चनानि of gold, पद्मानि च and lotuses, कस्य whose, तेजसा by lustre, जातानि created, कच्छपैः सह along with tortoises, सौवर्णाः golden, मत्स्याश्च fishes too, कथम् how, आत्मानम् yourself, अनुभावाम् च your power, एतत् all this, तपोबलम् ascetic power, कस्य whose, च and, अजानताम् do not know, नः us, सर्वेषाम् for all of us, सर्वम् everything, आख्यातुम् to tell, अर्हसि you ought to.

Meaning

'By whose prowess are these golden trees yielding sacred fragrant flowers and fruits? How are these golden lotuses created in the clear water? How is it that here are golden fishes and tortoises? Whose fruit of penance is this? Is it by your power? We do not know. You should tell all of us everything'.

KK-51-9Kishkindha Kanda 51.9

एवमुक्ता हनुमता तापसी धर्मचारिणी।।4.51.9।। प्रत्युवाच हनूमन्तं सर्वभूतहिते रता।

evamuktā hanumatā tāpasī dharmacāriṇī||4.51.9|| pratyuvāca hanūmantṃ sarvabhūtahite ratā|

Translation

हनुमता Hanuman, एवम् in that way, उक्ता spoken, सर्वभूतहिते in the interest of all beings, रता committed, धर्मचारिणी noble woman, तापसी female ascetic, हनूमन्तम् to Hanuman, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

The noble ascetic committed to the welfare of all beings replied to Hanuman's enquiry:

KK-51-10Kishkindha Kanda 51.10

मयो नाम महातेजा मायावी वानरर्षभः।।4.51.10।। तेनेदं निर्मितं सर्वं मायया काञ्चनं वनम्।

mayo nāma mahātejā māyāvī vānararṣabhḥ||4.51.10|| tenedṃ nirmitṃ sarvṃ māyayā kāñcanṃ vanam|

Translation

वानरर्षभः O bull among monkeys, महातेजाः brilliant, मायावी a deceitful, मयो नाम called Maya, इदम् this, सर्वम् all, काञ्चनं वनम् golden forest, तेन by his, मायया magical power, निर्मितम् created.

Meaning

'O bull among monkeys this golden forest was created by the magical power of a deceitful demon called Maya.

KK-51-11Kishkindha Kanda 51.11

पुरा दानवमुख्यानां विश्वकर्मा बभूव ह।।4.51.11।। येनेदं काञ्चनं दिव्यं निर्मितं भवनोत्तमम्।

purā dānavamukhyānāṃ viśvakarmā babhūva ha||4.51.11|| yenedṃ kāñcanṃ divyṃ nirmitṃ bhavanottamam|

Translation

येन by whomsoever, काञ्चनम् golden, दिव्यम् wonderful, इदम् this, भवनोत्तमम् best of mansions, निर्मितम् constructed, पुरा earlier, दानवमुख्यानाम् chiefs of demons, विश्वकर्मा Visvakarma, बभूव existed.

Meaning

This best of wonderful mansions has been constructed earlier by Visvakarma, the chief (architect) of the demons.

KK-51-12Kishkindha Kanda 51.12

स तु वर्षसहस्राणि तपस्तप्त्वा महावने।।4.51.12।। पितामहाद्वरं लेभे सर्वमौशनसं धनम्।

sa tu varṣasahasrāṇi tapastaptvā mahāvane||4.51.12|| pitāmahādvarṃ lebhe sarvamauśanasṃ dhanam|

Translation

सः that, वने in the forest, वर्षसहस्राणि for thousands of years, महावने dense forest, तपः penance, तप्त्वा having performed, पितामहात् from the creator Brahma, वरम् boon, औशनसम् of Usanas, सर्वम् all, धनम् wealth, लेभे inherited.

Meaning

'He (Maya) performed rigorous penance in the dense forest for thousands of years seeking the favour of Brahma, the creator and obtained a boon that he should inherit all the wealth of Usanas (Shukra).

KK-51-13Kishkindha Kanda 51.13

वनं विधाय बलवान्सर्वकामेश्वरस्तदा।।4.51.13।। उवास सुखितः कालं कञ्चिदस्मिन्महावने।

vanṃ vidhāya balavānsarvakāmeśvarastadā||4.51.13|| uvāsa sukhitḥ kālṃ kañcidasminmahāvane|

Translation

तदा then, बलवान् powerful one, सर्वकामेश्वरः master of all desires, सुखितः happily, अस्मिन् in this, महावने in this dense forest, कञ्चित्कालम् for some time, उवास lived, वनं the forest, विधाय after creating.

Meaning

Then the mighty Maya who received the power of (executing) desires created this mansion and lived here happily for some time in this dense forest.

KK-51-14Kishkindha Kanda 51.14

तमप्सरसि हेमायां सक्तं दानवपुङ्गवम्।।4.51.14।। विक्रम्यैवाशनिं गृह्य जघानेत्रः पुरन्दरः।

tamapsarasi hemāyāṃ saktṃ dānavapuṅgavam||4.51.14|| vikramyaivāśaniṃ gṛhya jaghānetrḥ purandarḥ|

Translation

हेमायाम् Hema, अप्सरसि an apsarasa or angel, सक्तम् infatuated, तम् him, दानवपुङ्गवम् great demon, ईशः lord, पुरन्दरः Indra, अशनिम् thunderbolt, गृह्य after taking, विक्रम्यैव with all his might, जघान attacked.

Meaning

'Seeing this great demon in love with a heavenly apsara (nymph) called Hema, Lord Indra with all his might attacked him with his thunderbolt.

KK-51-15Kishkindha Kanda 51.15

इदं च ब्रह्मणा दत्तं हेमायै वनमुत्तमम्।।4.51.15।। शाश्वता: कामभोगश्च गृहं चेदं हिरण्मयम्।

idṃ ca brahmaṇā dattṃ hemāyai vanamuttamam||4.51.15|| śāśvatā: kāmabhogaśca gṛhṃ cedṃ hiraṇmayam|

Translation

इदम् thus, उत्तमम् wonderful, वनम् forest, शाश्वता: permanently, कामभोगश्च luxurious life, हिरण्मयम् golden, इदम् this, गृहम् house, ब्रह्मणा creator Brahma, हेमायै to Hema, दत्तम् was given.

Meaning

'Thus this wonderful forest and the golden house with all luxury were given away permanently to Hema by the creator Brahma.

KK-51-16Kishkindha Kanda 51.16

दुहिता मेरुसावर्णेरहं तस्यास्स्वयंप्रभा।।4.51.16।। इदं रक्षामि भवनं हेमाया वानरोत्तम।

duhitā merusāvarṇerahṃ tasyāssvayṃprabhā||4.51.16|| idṃ rakṣāmi bhavanṃ hemāyā vānarottama|

Translation

वानरोत्तम best of monkeys, मेरुसावर्णेः of Meru Sauvarni, दुहिता daughter, स्वयंप्रभा Svayamprabha, अहम् me, तस्याः her, हेमायाः Hema's, इदम् this, भवनम् house, रक्षामिI protect.

Meaning

'O best of monkeys daughter of Meru Sauvarni, I am Svayamprabha (selfilluminator), caretaker of this house of Hema. (Meru Sauvarni is the eleventh Manu).

KK-51-17Kishkindha Kanda 51.17

मम प्रियसखी हेमा नृत्तगीतविशारदा।।4.51.17।। तया दत्तवरा चास्मि रक्षामि भवनोत्तमम्।

mama priyasakhī hemā nṛttagītaviśāradā||4.51.17|| tayā dattavarā cāsmi rakṣāmi bhavanottamam|

Translation

नृत्तगीतविशारदा wellversed in dance and music, हेमा Hema, मम to me, प्रियसखी dear friend, तया as such, दत्तवरा granted a boon, अस्मि I am, उत्तमम् supreme, भवनम् house, रक्षामि I watch this house.

Meaning

'Hema, wellversed in dance and music is a fast friend to me. She granted a boon (that none can resist me) and gave this house of which I am the caretaker.

KK-51-18Kishkindha Kanda 51.18

किं कार्यं कस्य वा हेतोः कान्ताराणि प्रपश्यथ।।4.51.18।। कथं चेदं वनं दुर्गं युष्माभिरुपलक्षितम्।

kiṃ kāryṃ kasya vā hetoḥ kāntārāṇi prapaśyatha||4.51.18|| kathṃ cedṃ vanṃ durgṃ yuṣmābhirupalakṣitam|

Translation

कार्यम् mission, किम् what, कस्य वा for what, हेतोः for purpose, कान्ताराणि these forests, प्रपश्यथ you are looking for, दुर्गम् inaccessible, इदम् वनम् this forest, युष्माभिः by all of you, कथम् how, उपलक्षितम् was found?

Meaning

'What is your mission? For what purpose have you come to this inaccessible forest? What are you looking for?How did you find this?

KK-51-19Kishkindha Kanda 51.19

इमान्यभ्यवहार्याणि मूलानि च फलानि च।।4.51.19।। भुक्त्वा पीत्वा च पानीयं सर्वं मे वक्तुमर्हथ।

imānyabhyavahāryāṇi mūlāni ca phalāni ca||4.51.19|| bhuktvā pītvā ca pānīyṃ sarvṃ me vaktumarhatha|

Translation

इमान् these, अभ्यवहार्याणि wonderful eatables, मूलानि च roots, फलानि च and fruits, भुक्त्वा after eating, पानीयम् drink, पीत्वा च taking, मे to me, सर्वम् every thing, वक्तुम् you may tell, अर्हथ you may do so.

Meaning

'Eat these wonderful roots and fruits and have these drinks and then tell me all about you. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे एकपञ्चशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends of the fiftyfirst sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
