KK-48-1Kishkindha Kanda 48.1

सह ताराङ्गदाभ्यां तु गत्वा स हनुमान्कपिः। सुग्रीवेण यथोद्दिष्टं तं देशमुपचक्रमे।।4.48.1।।

saha tārāṅgadābhyāṃ tu gatvā sa hanumānkapiḥ| sugrīveṇa yathoddiṣṭṃ tṃ deśamupacakrame||4.48.1||

Translation

कपिः monkey, हनुमान् Hanuman, ताराङ्गदाभ्यां सह along with Tara and Angada, गत्वा सा going, सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, यथोद्दिष्टम् as instructed, तम् them, देशम् place, उपप्रचक्रमे started.

Meaning

Hanuman, the monkey accompanied by Tara and Angada proceeded as instructed by Sugriva in the (South) direction.

KK-48-2-3Kishkindha Kanda 48.2–3 (युग्मम्)

स तु दूरमुपागम्य सर्वैस्तै: कपिसत्तमैः। विचिनोति स्म विन्ध्यस्य गुहाश्च गहनानि च।।4.48.2।। पर्वताग्रान्नदीदुर्गान्सरांसि विपुलान्द्रुमान्। वृक्षषण्डांश्च विविधान्पर्वतान्घनपादपान्।।4.48.3।।

sa tu dūramupāgamya sarvaistai: kapisattamaiḥ| vicinoti sma vindhyasya guhāśca gahanāni ca||4.48.2|| parvatāgrānnadīdurgānsarāṃsi vipulāndrumān| vṛkṣaṣaṇḍāṃśca vividhānparvatānghanapādapān||4.48.3||

Translation

सः that, सर्वैः तैः they all, कपिसत्तमैः with heroic monkeys, दूरम् a distant place, उपागम्य having gone, ततः then, विन्ध्यस्य Vindhya's, गुहाश्च caves, गहनानि च impenetrable, विचिनोति searched, पर्वताग्रान् on the peaks of mountains, नदीदुर्गान् inaccessible fortress surrounded by rivers, सरांसि tanks, विपुलान्द्रुमान् huge trees, वृक्षषण्डांश्च collection of trees, विविधान् many, पर्वतान् mountains, घनपादपान् dense trees.

Meaning

He went a long distance with other heroic monkeys, searching in the impenetrable caves of Vindhya mountain. They combed interior places, mountain peaks, fortresses surrounded by rivers, lakes, extensive groves of trees, bushes and thickets.

KK-48-4Kishkindha Kanda 48.4

अन्वेषमाणास्ते सर्वे वानरास्सर्वतो दिशम्। न सीतां ददृशुर्वीरा मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम्।।4.48.4।।

anveṣamāṇāste sarve vānarāssarvato diśam| na sītāṃ dadṛśurvīrā maithilīṃ janakātmajām||4.48.4||

Translation

वीराः heroes, ते वानराः the vanaras, सर्वे all, सर्वतो दिशम् all over in that direction, अन्वेषमाणाः went searching, मैथिलीम् for Maithili, जनकात्मजाम् Janaka's daughter, सीताम् Sita, न ददृशुः they did not see.

Meaning

The heroic monkeys went searching all over the direction for the daughter of Janaka, but in vain.

KK-48-5Kishkindha Kanda 48.5

ते भक्षयन्तो मूलानि फलानि विविधानि च। अन्वेषमाणा दुर्धर्षान्यवसं स्तत्र तत्र ह।।4.48.5।।

te bhakṣayanto mūlāni phalāni vividhāni ca| anveṣamāṇā durdharṣānyavasṃ statra tatra ha||4.48.5||

Translation

दुर्धर्षाः unassailable, ते those, विविधानि many, मूलानि roots, फलान्यपि and also fruits, भक्षयन्तः eating, अन्वेषमाणाः searching, तत्र तत्र here and there, न्यवसन् dwelt.

Meaning

The unassailable monkeys ate roots and fruits and halted here and there at different places searching for Sita.

KK-48-6Kishkindha Kanda 48.6

स तु देशो दुरन्वेषो गुहागहनवान्महान्। निर्जलं निर्जनं शून्यं गहनं रोमहर्षणम्।।4.48.6।।

sa tu deśo duranveṣo guhāgahanavānmahān| nirjalṃ nirjanṃ śūnyṃ gahanṃ romaharṣaṇam||4.48.6||

Translation

गुहागहनवान् a location with impenetrable caves, महान् great, सः देशः that place, दुरन्वेषः is difficult to search, निर्जलम् with no water, निर्जनम् no people, शून्यम् desolate, गहनम् impassable, रोमहर्षणम् terrific.

Meaning

They searched in dense forests, interior locations impassable, desolate and terrific, without water, and people.

KK-48-7Kishkindha Kanda 48.7

त्यक्त्वा तु तं तदा देशं सर्वे वै हरियूथपाः। तादृशान्यप्यरण्यानि विचित्य भृशपीडिताः।।4.48.7।। देशमन्यं दुराधर्षं विविशु श्चाकुतो भयाः।

tyaktvā tu tṃ tadā deśṃ sarve vai hariyūthapāḥ| tādṛśānyapyaraṇyāni vicitya bhṛśapīḍitāḥ||4.48.7|| deśamanyṃ durādharṣṃ viviśu ścākuto bhayāḥ|

Translation

तादृशानि such of those, अरण्यान्यपि even in the forests, विचित्य having searched, भृशपीडिताः very difficult, सर्वे all, हरियूथपाः vanara leaders, ततः then, तं देशम् that place, त्यक्त्वा after leaving, अकुतोभयाः fearless warriors, दुराधर्षम् unassailable, अन्यं देशम् other places, विविशुः entered.

Meaning

Having searched all over in the forests and very difficult areas, the fearless, invincible vanaras moved forward, leaving that place and entered another areasearching.

KK-48-8Kishkindha Kanda 48.8

यत्र वन्ध्यफला वृक्षा विपुष्पाः पर्णवर्जिताः।।4.48.8।। निस्तोयास्सरितो यत्र मूलं यत्र सुदुर्लभम्।

yatra vandhyaphalā vṛkṣā vipuṣpāḥ parṇavarjitāḥ||4.48.8|| nistoyāssarito yatra mūlṃ yatra sudurlabham|

Translation

यत्र where, वृक्षाः trees, वन्ध्यफलाः without fruits, विपुष्पाः without flowers, पर्णवर्जिताः without leaves, यत्र where, सरितः rivers, निस्तोयाः without water, यत्र there, मूलम् root, सुदुर्लभम् very difficult to get.

Meaning

As they marched forward, they entered a location where there were trees devoid of leaves, flowers and fruits and rivers without water and a place where it was difficult to get roots (for food).

KK-48-9Kishkindha Kanda 48.9

न सन्ति महिषा यत्र न मृगा न च हस्तिनः।।4.48.9।। शार्दूलाः पक्षिणो वापि ये चान्ये वनगोचराः।

na santi mahiṣā yatra na mṛgā na ca hastinḥ||4.48.9|| śārdūlāḥ pakṣiṇo vāpi ye cānye vanagocarāḥ|

Translation

यत्र where, महिषाः buffaloes, न सन्ति not found, मृगाः deer, न not, हस्तिनः elephants, शार्दूलाः tigers, पक्षिणो वापि and even birds, वनगोचराः forest beasts, ये those, अन्ये च and other, न not,

Meaning

There were no buffaloes, no deer, no elephants, tigers or even birds and other wild animals.

KK-48-10-11Kishkindha Kanda 48.10–11 (युग्मम्)

न यत्रवृक्षा नौषध्यो न वल्ल्यो नापि वीरुधः।।4.48.10।। स्निग्धपत्रास्स्थले यत्र पद्मिन्यः फुल्लपङ्कजाः। प्रेक्षणीयास्सुगन्धाश्च भ्रमरैश्चापिवर्जिताः।।4.48.11।।

na yatravṛkṣā nauṣadhyo na vallyo nāpi vīrudhḥ||4.48.10|| snigdhapatrāssthale yatra padminyḥ phullapaṅkajāḥ| prekṣaṇīyāssugandhāśca bhramaraiścāpivarjitāḥ||4.48.11||

Translation

यत्र where, वृक्षाः trees, न not, ओषध्यः medicinal plants, न not, वल्ल्यः vines, न not, वीरुधः creepers spreading on ground, न not, यत्र where, स्निग्धपत्राः shining leaves, स्थले on the dry ground, पद्मिन्यः lotus creepers, फुल्लपङ्कजाः in full bloom, प्रेक्षणीयाः beautiful to look, सुगन्धाश्च fragrant ones, भ्रमरैश्चापिवर्जिताः devoid of bees.

Meaning

There were no medicinal plants, no vines or creepers spreading on the ground.The lotus creepers on the dry ground had shining leaves,beautiful and fragrant blooms devoid of bees.

KK-48-12Kishkindha Kanda 48.12

कण्डुर्नाम महाभागस्सत्यवादी तपोधनः। महर्षिः परमामर्षी नियमैर्दुष्प्रधर्षणः।।4.48.12।।

kaṇḍurnāma mahābhāgassatyavādī tapodhanḥ| maharṣiḥ paramāmarṣī niyamairduṣpradharṣaṇḥ||4.48.12||

Translation

सत्यवादी truthful, महाभागः an eminent acsetic, तपोधनः rich in penance, परमामर्षी choleric tempered, नियमैः strict follower of austerities, दुष्प्रधर्षणः outrageous, कण्डुर्नाम called Kandu, महर्षिः sage.

Meaning

There was a sage called Kandu who was truthful, outrageous and shorttempered. He observed strict austerities and was rich in penance.

KK-48-13Kishkindha Kanda 48.13

तस्य तस्मिन्वने पुत्रो बालष्षोडशवार्षिकः। प्रणष्टो जीवितान्ताय क्रुद्धस्तत्र महामुनिः।।4.48.13।।

tasya tasminvane putro bālaṣṣoḍaśavārṣikḥ| praṇaṣṭo jīvitāntāya kruddhastatra mahāmuniḥ||4.48.13||

Translation

तस्मिन् वने in that forest, तस्य his, षोडशवार्षिकः sixteen years old, पुत्रः son, बाल: young boy, तत्र there, जीवितान्ताय died, प्रणष्टः was lost, महामुनिः great sage, क्रुद्धः enraged.

Meaning

The great sage was enraged because he had lost his sixteenyearold son in the forest.

KK-48-14Kishkindha Kanda 48.14

तेन धर्मात्मना शप्तं कृत्स्नं तत्रमहद्वनम्। अशरण्यं दुराधर्षं मृगपक्षिविवर्जितम्।।4.48.14।।

tena dharmātmanā śaptṃ kṛtsnṃ tatramahadvanam| aśaraṇyṃ durādharṣṃ mṛgapakṣivivarjitam||4.48.14||

Translation

तत्र there, महत् great, कृत्स्नम् entire, वनम् forest, अशरण्यम् barren, दुराधर्षम् unfit to harbour, मृगपक्षिविवर्जितम् without beasts and birds, तेन by him, धर्मात्मना by the righteous sage, शप्तम् cursed.

Meaning

Cursed by the great righteous sage the entire forest turned barren, unfit to harbour living beings and became devoid of even beasts and birds.

KK-48-15Kishkindha Kanda 48.15

तस्य ते काननान्ताश्च गिरीणां कन्दराणि च। प्रभवनि नदीनां च विचिन्वन्ति समाहिताः।।4.48.15।।

tasya te kānanāntāśca girīṇāṃ kandarāṇi ca| prabhavani nadīnāṃ ca vicinvanti samāhitāḥ||4.48.15||

Translation

ते those, समाहिताः those with concentrated attention, तस्य his, काननान्ताश्च forest regions, गिरीणाम् in the mountains, कन्दराणि च caves also, नदीनाम् प्रभवानि च sources of rivers also, विचिन्वन्ति searched.

Meaning

The monkeys searched in the forest regions, in the mountains, rivers and sources of rivers with concentrated attention.

KK-48-16Kishkindha Kanda 48.16

तत्र चापि महात्मानो नापश्यञ्जनकात्मजाम्। हर्तारं रावणं वापि सुग्रीवप्रियकारिणः।।4.48.16।।

tatra cāpi mahātmāno nāpaśyañjanakātmajām| hartārṃ rāvaṇṃ vāpi sugrīvapriyakāriṇḥ||4.48.16||

Translation

महात्मानः great souls, सुग्रीवप्रियकारिणः eager to please Sugriva, तत्र चापि and there also, जनकात्मजाम् daughter of Janaka, हर्तारम् one who has abducted, रावणं वापि Ravana also, नापश्यन् could not see.

Meaning

Eager to please Sugriva, the great souls searched in the forest region. Even there they could not find Janaka's daughter and also Ravana who had abducted Sita.

KK-48-17Kishkindha Kanda 48.17

ते प्रविश्याऽशु तं भीमं लतागुल्मसमावृतम्। दद्दृशुः क्रूरकर्माणमसुरं सुरनिर्भयम्।।4.48.17।।

te praviśyā'śu tṃ bhīmṃ latāgulmasamāvṛtam| daddṛśuḥ krūrakarmāṇamasurṃ suranirbhayam||4.48.17||

Translation

ते they, लतागुल्मसमावृतम् covered with creepers and bushes, क्रूरम् dreadful, तम् that, प्रविश्य entering, आशु immediately, क्रूरकर्माणम् one of wicked deeds, सुरनिर्भयम् not even afraid of gods, असुरम् demon, दद्दृशुः they saw.

Meaning

(Then) they noticed a place covered with creepers and bushes. As soon as they entered the dreadful forest, they saw a demon of wicked deeds, unafraid even of gods.

KK-48-18Kishkindha Kanda 48.18

तं दृष्ट्वा वानरा घोरं स्थितं शैलमिवापरम्। गाढं परिहितास्सर्वे दृष्ट्वा तान्पर्वतोपममान्।।4.48.18।।

tṃ dṛṣṭvā vānarā ghorṃ sthitṃ śailamivāparam| gāḍhṃ parihitāssarve dṛṣṭvā tānparvatopamamān||4.48.18||

Translation

सर्वे all, वानराः monkeys, शैलम् इव like a mountain, स्थितम् stood, घोरम् dreadful, तम् they, अपरम् another, दृष्ट्वा saw, पर्वतोपमम् like a huge mountain, तम् him, दृष्ट्वा saw, गाढम् firmly, परिहिताः stood in attention.

Meaning

The monkeys beheld the dreadful demon standing firmly like a huge, incomparable mountain in front of them.

KK-48-19Kishkindha Kanda 48.19

सोऽपि तान्वानरान्सर्वान् नष्टा स्स्थेत्यब्रवीद्बली। अभ्यधावत सङ्कृद्धो मुष्टिमुद्यम्य संहितम्।।4.48.19।।

so'pi tānvānarānsarvān naṣṭā ssthetyabravīdbalī| abhyadhāvata saṅkṛddho muṣṭimudyamya sṃhitam||4.48.19||

Translation

सोऽपि he also, नष्टाः killed, स्थ you are, इति thus, तान् them, सर्वान् all, वानरान् monkeys, अब्रवीत् said, सङ्कृद्धः enraged, संहितम् held, मुष्टिम् the fist, उद्यम्य raising, अभ्यधावत ran towards them.

Meaning

Seeing the monkeys, the infuriated demon ran towards them, raising his fist firmly, saying, 'You are all as good as dead, now that I have caught you.'

KK-48-20Kishkindha Kanda 48.20

तमापतन्तं सहसा वालिपुत्रोऽङ्गदस्तदा। रावणोऽयमिति ज्ञात्वा तलेनाभिजघान ह।।4.48.20।।

tamāpatantṃ sahasā vāliputro'ṅgadastadā| rāvaṇo'yamiti jñātvā talenābhijaghāna ha||4.48.20||

Translation

तदा then, वालिपुत्रः Vali's son, अङ्गदः Angada, आपतन्तम् pouncing, तम् them, अयम् this person, रावणः is Ravana, इति thus, ज्ञात्वा on thinking, सहसा at once, तलेन with his palm, अभिजघान ह slapped him.

Meaning

Mistaking him for Ravana, Angada, Vali's son at once pounced on him and slapped him with his palm.

KK-48-21Kishkindha Kanda 48.21

स वालिपुत्राभिहतो वक्त्राच्छोणितमुद्वमन्। असुरोऽभ्यपतद्भूमौ पर्यस्त इव पर्वतः।।4.48.21।।

sa vāliputrābhihato vaktrācchoṇitamudvaman| asuro'bhyapatadbhūmau paryasta iva parvatḥ||4.48.21||

Translation

वालिपुत्राभिहतः struck by the son of Vali, सः असुरः that demon, वक्त्रात् from the mouth, शोणितम् blood, उद्वमन् vomitting, पर्यस्तः uprooted, पर्वतः इव like a mountain, भूमौ on the ground, अभ्यपतत् overturned.

Meaning

Struck by Vali's son, the demon vomitting blood from the mouth, fell down on the ground like a mountain, uprooted.

KK-48-22Kishkindha Kanda 48.22

तेऽपि तस्मिन्निरुच्छवासे वानरा जितकाशिनः। व्यचिन्वन्प्रायशस्तत्र सर्वं तद्गिरिगह्वरम्।।4.48.22।।

te'pi tasminnirucchavāse vānarā jitakāśinḥ| vyacinvanprāyaśastatra sarvṃ tadgirigahvaram||4.48.22||

Translation

तस्मिन् his, निरुच्छवासे he breathed his last, जितकाशिनः vanaras who won him, ते they, तत्र there, प्रायशः probably, सर्वम् all over, तत् that, गिरिगह्वरम् mountain cave, व्यचिन्वन् searched, अपि also.

Meaning

He breathed his last, and the monkeys who won went searching almost all over the mountain caves.

KK-48-23Kishkindha Kanda 48.23

विचितं तु ततः कृत्वा सर्वे ते काननं पुनः। अन्यदेवापरं घोरं विविशुर्गिरिगह्वरम्।।4.48.23।।

vicitṃ tu tatḥ kṛtvā sarve te kānanṃ punḥ| anyadevāparṃ ghorṃ viviśurgirigahvaram||4.48.23||

Translation

सर्वे all, ते they, काननं पुनः again in the forest, विचितम् searched, कृत्वा having done, ततः then, अन्यदेव a different, घोरम् dreadful, अपरम् another, गिरिगह्वरम् mountain cave, विविशुः entered.

Meaning

Again they searched the forest and entered another dreadful mountain cave.
