KK-47-1Kishkindha Kanda 47.1

दर्शनार्थं तु वैदेह्यास्सर्वतः कपियूधपाः। व्यादिष्टाः कपिराजेन यथोक्तं जग्मुरञ्जसा।।4.47.1।।

darśanārthṃ tu vaidehyāssarvatḥ kapiyūdhapāḥ| vyādiṣṭāḥ kapirājena yathoktṃ jagmurañjasā||4.47.1||

Translation

कपिराजेन by the king of monkeys, व्यादिष्टाः commanded, कपियूधपाः leaders of vanara troops, यथोक्तम् as instructed, वैदेह्याः Vaidehi's, दर्शनार्थम् to look for, अञ्जसा swiftly, सर्वतः all directions, जग्मुः went.

Meaning

The leaders of vanara troops went fast in all directions to look for Vaidehi following the instructions of the king of vanaras.

KK-47-2Kishkindha Kanda 47.2

सरांसि सरित काक्षानाकाशं नगराणि च। नदीदुर्गांस्तथा शैलान्विचिन्वन्ति समन्ततः।।4.47.2।।

sarāṃsi sarita kākṣānākāśṃ nagarāṇi ca| nadīdurgāṃstathā śailānvicinvanti samantatḥ||4.47.2||

Translation

ते they, सरांसि tanks, सरित: कक्षान् bottom of rivers, आकाशम् sky, नगराणि च and towns, तथा similarly, नदीदुर्गान् forts surrounded by rivers, शैलान् mountains, समन्ततः every where, विचिन्वन्ति looking for.

Meaning

They went looking everywhere in the tanks, in the bottom of rivers, in towns, in the sky and similarly in inaccessible rivers, mountains, and forts surrounded by rivers.

KK-47-3Kishkindha Kanda 47.3

सुग्रीवेण समाख्यातास्सर्वे वानरयूथपाः। प्रदेशान्प्रविचिन्वन्ति सशैलवनकाननान्।।4.47.3।।

sugrīveṇa samākhyātāssarve vānarayūthapāḥ| pradeśānpravicinvanti saśailavanakānanān||4.47.3||

Translation

सुग्रीवेण by Sugriva, समाख्याताः instructed, सर्वे all, वानरयूथपाः vanara troop leaders, सशैलवनकाननान् including forests and mountains, प्रदेशान् places, विचिन्वन्ति searched.

Meaning

The troop leaders of the monkeys instructed by Sugriva searched in all places including mountains and forests.

KK-47-4Kishkindha Kanda 47.4

विचित्य दिवसं सर्वे सीताधिगमने धृताः। समायान्ति स्म मेदिन्यां निशाकालेषु वानराः।।4.47.4।।

vicitya divasṃ sarve sītādhigamane dhṛtāḥ| samāyānti sma medinyāṃ niśākāleṣu vānarāḥ||4.47.4||

Translation

सर्वे all, वानराः monkeys, सीताधिगमने in search of Sita, धृताः determined, दिवसम् all day, विचित्य after searching, निशाकालेषु during nights also, मेदिन्याम् on the ground, समायान्ति स्म used to meet one another.

Meaning

The monkeys used to search for Sita all day determinedly and at night assemble at one place.

KK-47-5Kishkindha Kanda 47.5

सर्वर्तुकमान् देशेषु वानारास्सफलद्रुमान्। आसाद्य रजनीं शय्यां चक्रुस्सर्वेष्वहस्सु ते।।4.47.5।।

sarvartukamān deśeṣu vānārāssaphaladrumān| āsādya rajanīṃ śayyāṃ cakrussarveṣvahassu te||4.47.5||

Translation

ते वानराः those monkeys, सर्वेषु अहस्सु all day, सर्वर्तुकामान् in all seasons, सफलद्रुमान् fruitbearing trees, देशेषु in countries, आसाद्य having reached, रजनीम् in the night, शय्याम् resting place, चक्रुः they made.

Meaning

The monkeys would search all day and by night reach for rest the branches of the trees that bear fruits in all seasons.

KK-47-6Kishkindha Kanda 47.6

तदहः प्रथमं कृत्वा मासे प्रश्रवणं गताः। कपिराजेन सङ्गम्य निराशाः कपियूधपाः।।4.47.6।।

tadahḥ prathamṃ kṛtvā māse praśravaṇṃ gatāḥ| kapirājena saṅgamya nirāśāḥ kapiyūdhapāḥ||4.47.6||

Translation

तत् अहः that day, प्रथमम् first, कृत्वा having passed off, मासे in the month, कपियूधपाः monkey leaders, निराशाः disappointed, प्रस्रवणम् mountain Prasravana, गताः gone, कपिराजेन by the king of vanaras, सङ्गम्य after meeting.

Meaning

The monkey leaders thus spent a month doing what they did daily and returning disappointed, met the monkey king on mount Prasravana.

KK-47-7Kishkindha Kanda 47.7

विचित्य तु दिशं पूर्वां यथोक्तां सचिवैस्सह। अदृष्ट्वा विनतस्सीतामाजगाम महाबलः।।4.47.7।।

vicitya tu diśṃ pūrvāṃ yathoktāṃ sacivaissaha| adṛṣṭvā vinatassītāmājagāma mahābalḥ||4.47.7||

Translation

महाबलः powerful, विनतः Vinata, सचिवैः सह along with the ministers, यथोक्ताम् as instructed, पूर्वां दिशम् eastern side, विचित्य having searched, सीताम् Sita, अदृष्ट्वा not able to see, आजगाम returned.

Meaning

Having searched for Sita as instructed by Sugriva, powerful Vinita returned along with the ministers unable to find Sita.

KK-47-8Kishkindha Kanda 47.8

उत्तरां च दिशं सर्वां विचित्य स महाकपिः। आगतस्सह सैन्येन वीरश्शतवलिस्तदा।।4.47.8।।

uttarāṃ ca diśṃ sarvāṃ vicitya sa mahākapiḥ| āgatassaha sainyena vīraśśatavalistadā||4.47.8||

Translation

तदा then, वीरः hero, महाकपिः great monkey, शतबलः Satabala, सैन्येन सह with the army, सर्वाम् all, उत्तरां दिशम् northern direction, विचित्य after searching, आगतः came back.

Meaning

Then the great monkey hero Satabali came back from the northern direction along with the army after searching in vain for Sita.

KK-47-9Kishkindha Kanda 47.9

सुषेणः पश्चिमा माशां विचित्य सह वानरैः। समेत्य मासे सम्पूर्णे सुग्रीवमुपचक्रमे।।4.47.9।।

suṣeṇḥ paścimā māśāṃ vicitya saha vānaraiḥ| sametya māse sampūrṇe sugrīvamupacakrame||4.47.9||

Translation

सुषेणः Sushena, वानरैस्सह along with the monkeys, पश्चिमाम् आशाम् western side, विचित्य having searched, मासे in a month, सम्पूर्णे when completed, समेत्य after coming back, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, उपचक्रमे reported.

Meaning

Sushena searched for a full month in the western quarter along with the monkeys and returned to report to Sugriva.

KK-47-10Kishkindha Kanda 47.10

तं प्रस्रवणपृष्ठस्थं समासाद्याभिवाद्य च। आसीनं सह रामेण सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत्।।4.47.10।।

tṃ prasravaṇapṛṣṭhasthṃ samāsādyābhivādya ca| āsīnṃ saha rāmeṇa sugrīvamidamabravīt||4.47.10||

Translation

रामेण सह along with Rama, आसीनम् seated, प्रस्रवणपृष्ठस्थम् on the Prasravana mountain, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, आसाद्य came near, अभिवाद्य च and offered salutations, इदम् thus, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Sushena came to Sugriva, seated with Rama at Prasravana mountain, offered salutations and spoke:

KK-47-11Kishkindha Kanda 47.11

विचिताः पर्वतास्सर्वे वनानि गहनानि च। निम्नगास्सागरान्ताश्च सर्वे जनपदाश्च ये।।4.47.11।।

vicitāḥ parvatāssarve vanāni gahanāni ca| nimnagāssāgarāntāśca sarve janapadāśca ye||4.47.11||

Translation

सर्वे all, पर्वताः mountains, विचिताः are searched, गहनानि inacccessible, वनानि च forests also, निम्नगाः rivers, सागरान्ताश्च in the seas, ये those, जनपदाश्च country side, सर्वे every where.

Meaning

'We searched for her in the mountains, in inaccessible forests, in rivers and seas and also the countryside.

KK-47-12Kishkindha Kanda 47.12

गुहाश्च विचितास्सर्वास्त्वया याः परिकीर्तिताः। विचिताश्च महागुल्मा लताविततसन्तताः।।4.47.12।।

guhāśca vicitāssarvāstvayā yāḥ parikīrtitāḥ| vicitāśca mahāgulmā latāvitatasantatāḥ||4.47.12||

Translation

सर्वाः all, त्वया by your, परिकीर्तिताः mentioned, याः those, गुहाः caves, विचिताः searched, लताविततसन्तताः filled with extensive vines, महागुल्माः and huge bushes, विचिताः are searched.

Meaning

'We searched for her in the caves, in places filled with extensive vines and huge bushes and in all places mentioned by you.

KK-47-13Kishkindha Kanda 47.13

गहनेषु च देशेषु दुर्गेषु विषमेषु च। सत्त्वान्यतिप्रमाणानि विचितानि हतानि च।।4.47.13।। ये चैव गहना देशा विचितास्ते पुनः पुनः।

gahaneṣu ca deśeṣu durgeṣu viṣameṣu ca| sattvānyatipramāṇāni vicitāni hatāni ca||4.47.13|| ye caiva gahanā deśā vicitāste punḥ punḥ|

Translation

गहनेषु in the interiors, दुर्गेषु inaccessible, विषमेषु च and unevenplaces, देशेषु locations, अतिप्रमाणानि very huge, सत्त्वानि beings, विचितानि searched, हतानि च killed, गहनाः difficult interiors, ये those, देशाः places, ते those, पुनः पुनः again and again, विचिताः searched.

Meaning

'We searched again and again the interior, inaccessible and uneven locations,and killed huge animals. We searched in regions difficult to penetrate.

KK-47-14Kishkindha Kanda 47.14

उदारसत्त्वाभिजनो महात्मा स मैथिलीं द्रक्ष्यति वानरेन्द्रः। दिशं तु यामेव गता तु सीता तामास्थितोवायुसुतो हनूमान्।।4.47.14।।

udārasattvābhijano mahātmā sa maithilīṃ drakṣyati vānarendrḥ| diśṃ tu yāmeva gatā tu sītā tāmāsthitovāyusuto hanūmān||4.47.14||

Translation

वानरेन्द्र O king of monkeys, उदारसत्त्वाभिजनः exhalted by strength and birth, सः that, महात्मा great person, मैथिलीम् Maithili, द्रक्ष्यति will see, सीता sita, याम् एव whichever, दिशम् direction, गता is taken, ताम् that, वायुसुतः son of the Windgod, हनुमान् Hanuman, आस्थितः he has set out.

Meaning

'O king of monkeys we hope, his exhalted highness, the mighty vanara, son of the Windgod, Hanuman has gone in the direction in which Maithili has been carried off. He alone will find Sita and come back.' इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे सप्तचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fortyseventh sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
