KK-46-1Kishkindha Kanda 46.1

गतेषु वानरेन्द्रेषु रामस्सुग्रीवमब्रवीत्। कथं भवान्विजानीते सर्वं वै मण्डलं भुवः।।4.46.1।।

gateṣu vānarendreṣu rāmassugrīvamabravīt| kathṃ bhavānvijānīte sarvṃ vai maṇḍalṃ bhuvḥ||4.46.1||

Translation

वानरेन्द्रेषु when the monkey chieftains, गतेषु had gone, रामः Rama, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, अब्रवीत् said, भवान् you, भुवः of the earth, सर्वम् entire, मण्डलम् region, कथम् how, विजानीते do you know

Meaning

When the chieftains of the monkeys left, Rama enquired Sugriva, how he had come to know the regions of the entire earth (which is a mandala. a circular form).

KK-46-2Kishkindha Kanda 46.2

सुग्रीवस्तु ततो राममुवाच प्रणतात्मवान्। श्रूयतां सर्वमाख्यास्ये विस्तरेण नरर्षभ।।4.46.2।।

sugrīvastu tato rāmamuvāca praṇatātmavān| śrūyatāṃ sarvamākhyāsye vistareṇa nararṣabha||4.46.2||

Translation

ततः then, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, प्रणतात्मवान् offered reverential salutation, रामम् to Rama, उवाच spoke, सर्वम् all, विस्तरेण in detail, आख्यास्ये narrate, नरर्षभ O Rama, श्रूयताम् listen.

Meaning

Then offering reverential salutation to Rama, Sugriva said, 'I shall narrate in detail. Listen, O bull among men

KK-46-3-4Kishkindha Kanda 46.3–4 (युग्मम्)

यदा तु दुन्दुभिं नाम दानवं महिषाकृतिम्। परिकालयते वाली मलयं प्रति पर्वतम्।।4.46.3।। तदा विवेश महिषो मलयस्य गुहां प्रति। विवेश वाली तत्रापि मलयं तज्जिघांसया।।4.46.4।।

yadā tu dundubhiṃ nāma dānavṃ mahiṣākṛtim| parikālayate vālī malayṃ prati parvatam||4.46.3|| tadā viveśa mahiṣo malayasya guhāṃ prati| viveśa vālī tatrāpi malayṃ tajjighāṃsayā||4.46.4||

Translation

वाली Vali, महिषाकृतिम् in buffalo form, दुन्दुभिं नाम named Dundubhi, दानवम् demon, यदा when, मलयं पर्वतं प्रति till the mount Malaya, प्रतिकालयते wished to kill him, तदा then, महिषः buffalo, मलयस्य Malaya's, गुहां प्रति towards the cave, विवेश entered, वाली Vali, तज्जिघांसया with the intention of killing him, तत्रापि into that, मलयम् Malaya, विवेश entered.

Meaning

Vali chased the demon Dundubhi in buffalo form into a cave of mount Malaya in order to kill him.

KK-46-5Kishkindha Kanda 46.5

ततोऽहं तत्र निक्षिप्तो गुहाद्वारि विनीतवत्। न च निष्क्रामते वाली तदा संवत्सरे गते4.46.5।।

tato'hṃ tatra nikṣipto guhādvāri vinītavat| na ca niṣkrāmate vālī tadā sṃvatsare gate4.46.5||

Translation

ततः then, विनीतवत् with due loyalty, अहम् I, तत्र there, गुहाद्वारि निक्षिप्तः I was made to wait at the entrance of the cave, तदा then, संवत्सरे when a year, गते passed, वाली Vali, न निष्क्रामते not returned.

Meaning

'Then I waited at the entrance of the cave with due loyalty. A year passed. Yet Vali did not return.

KK-46-6Kishkindha Kanda 46.6

ततः क्षतजवेगेन आपुपूरे तदा बिलम्। तदहं विस्मितो दृष्ट्वा भ्रातृशोकविषार्दितः।।4.46.6।।

tatḥ kṣatajavegena āpupūre tadā bilam| tadahṃ vismito dṛṣṭvā bhrātṛśokaviṣārditḥ||4.46.6||

Translation

ततः then, बिलम् cave, क्षतजवेगेन with the speed of the gushing blood, आपुपूरे filled with, तदा then, अहम् I, तत् that, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, विस्मितः bewildered, भ्रातुः brother, शोकविषार्दितः suffered intense agony.

Meaning

'There seeing the cave overflowing with the gushing blood, I was bewildered, thinking that my brother might have been killed. I suffered intense agony.

KK-46-7Kishkindha Kanda 46.7

अथाऽहं कृतबुद्धिस्तु सुव्यक्तं निहतो गुरुः। शिला पर्वतसङ्काशा बिलद्वारि मया कृता।।4.46.7।। अशक्नुव न्निष्क्रमितुं महिषो विनशेदिति।

athā'hṃ kṛtabuddhistu suvyaktṃ nihato guruḥ| śilā parvatasaṅkāśā biladvāri mayā kṛtā||4.46.7|| aśaknuva nniṣkramituṃ mahiṣo vinaśediti|

Translation

अथ then, गुरुः brother Vali, सुव्यक्तम् it is evident, निहतः killed, अहम् I, कृतबुद्धिः I thought, महिषः buffalo, निष्क्रमितुम् to return, अशक्नुवन् being unable, विनशेदिति should be destroyed, मया by myself, पर्वतसङ्काशा of the mountain size, शिला rock, बिलद्वारि at the entrance of, कृता placed.

Meaning

'Thereafter, convinced that my brother was killed, I placed a mountainsize rock at the entrance of the cave so that Dundubhi will be destroyed, unable to come out of the cave.

KK-46-8-9Kishkindha Kanda 46.8–9 (युग्मम्)

ततोऽहमागां किष्किन्धां निराशस्तस्य जीविते।।4.46.8।। राज्यं च सुमहत्प्राप्य तारया रुमया सह। मित्रैश्च सहितस्तत्र वसामि विगतज्वरः।।4.46.9।।

tato'hamāgāṃ kiṣkindhāṃ nirāśastasya jīvite||4.46.8|| rājyṃ ca sumahatprāpya tārayā rumayā saha| mitraiśca sahitastatra vasāmi vigatajvarḥ||4.46.9||

Translation

ततः then, अहम् I, तस्य his, जीविते about his life, निराशः lost hope, किष्किन्धाम् to Kishkinda, आगाम् I came, सुमहत् great, राज्यं च kingdom also, रुमया सह with Ruma, तार या with Tara, प्राप्य having got, तत्र there, मित्रैः with friends, सहितः accompanied, विगतज्वरः fearlessly, वसामि I lived.

Meaning

'I lost hope of his life and came back to Kishkinda. Having got the kingdom, and also Ruma and Tara, I was anointed king and ruled it fearlessly with all friends.

KK-46-10Kishkindha Kanda 46.10

आजगाम ततो वाली हत्वा तं दानवर्षभम्। ततोऽहमददां राज्यं गौरवाद्भययन्त्रितः।।4.46.10।।

ājagāma tato vālī hatvā tṃ dānavarṣabham| tato'hamadadāṃ rājyṃ gauravādbhayayantritḥ||4.46.10||

Translation

ततः then, दानवर्षभम् bull among monsters वाली Vali, तम् him, हत्वा after killing, आजगाम he came, ततः then, अहम् I, भययन्त्रितः constrained with fear, गौरवात् with respect, राज्यम् kingdom, अददाम् returned.

KK-46-11Kishkindha Kanda 46.11

स मां जिघांसुर्दुष्टात्मा वाली प्रव्यथितेन्द्रियः। परिकालयते क्रोधाद्धावन्तं सचिवैस्सह।।4.46.11।।

sa māṃ jighāṃsurduṣṭātmā vālī pravyathitendriyḥ| parikālayate krodhāddhāvantṃ sacivaissaha||4.46.11||

Translation

दुष्टात्मा evilminded, सः वाली that Vali, प्रव्यथितेन्द्रियः having lost control over his senses, सचिवैस्सह along with ministers, धावन्तम् while I was running, माम् me, जिघांसुः to kill, क्रोधात् enraged, परिकालयते ran after me.

Meaning

'The evilminded Vali, having lost his selfcontrol, ran after me in anger, to kill me and my ministers. I kept running.

KK-46-12Kishkindha Kanda 46.12

ततोऽहं वालिना तेन साऽनुबद्धः प्रधावितः। नदीश्च विविधाः पश्यन्वनानि नगराणि च।।4.46.12।।

tato'hṃ vālinā tena sā'nubaddhḥ pradhāvitḥ| nadīśca vividhāḥ paśyanvanāni nagarāṇi ca||4.46.12||

Translation

ततः then, तेन by him, वालिना by Vali, अनुबद्धः chased, सः अहम् that I was, विविधाः many, नदीः rivers, वनानि forests, नगराणि च towns, पश्यन् while seeing, प्रधावितः I ran.

KK-46-13Kishkindha Kanda 46.13

आदर्शतलसङ्काशा ततो वै पृथिवी मया। अलातचक्रप्रतिमा दृष्टा गोष्पदवत्तदा।।4.46.13।।

ādarśatalasaṅkāśā tato vai pṛthivī mayā| alātacakrapratimā dṛṣṭā goṣpadavattadā||4.46.13||

Translation

ततः then, मया by me, पृथिवी the earth, आदर्शतलसङ्काशा like the surface of a mirror, अलातचक्रप्रतिमा like a circling of fireband, दृष्टा seen, गोष्पदवत् as though it is of the size of cow's hoof, तदा then.

KK-46-14Kishkindha Kanda 46.14

पूर्वां दिशं ततो गत्वा पश्यामि विविधान् द्रुमान्। पर्वतन्श्च नदी रम्यास्सरांसि विविधानि च।।4.46.14।।

pūrvāṃ diśṃ tato gatvā paśyāmi vividhān drumān| parvatanśca nadī ramyāssarāṃsi vividhāni ca||4.46.14||

Translation

ततः then, पूर्वां दिशम् eastern quarter, गत्वा after going, विविधान् several, द्रुमान् trees, नदीन् rivers, रम्यान् delighting, पर्वतान् mountains, विविधानि many, सरांसि च lakes also, पश्यामि see (saw).

Meaning

'Then I ran in the eastern direction and saw many trees, lakes, rivers and beautiful mountains.

KK-46-15Kishkindha Kanda 46.15

उदयं तत्र पश्यामि पर्वतं धातुमण्डितम्। क्षीरोदं सागरं चैव नित्यमप्सरसालयम्।।4.46.15।।

udayṃ tatra paśyāmi parvatṃ dhātumaṇḍitam| kṣīrodṃ sāgarṃ caiva nityamapsarasālayam||4.46.15||

Translation

तत्र there, धातुमण्डितम् embellished with minerals, उदयं पर्वतम् mountain behind which the Sun rises, नित्यम् always, अप्सरसालयम् frequented by apsaras, क्षीरोदं सागरं चैव the milky ocean also, पश्यामि see (saw).

Meaning

'There I saw, filled with minerals the mountain behind which the Sun rises and the milky ocean frequented by the apsaras.

KK-46-16Kishkindha Kanda 46.16

परिकालयमानस्तु वालिनाऽभिद्रुत स्तदा। पुनरावृत्य सहसा प्रस्थितोऽहं तदा विभो।।4.46.16।।

parikālayamānastu vālinā'bhidruta stadā| punarāvṛtya sahasā prasthito'hṃ tadā vibho||4.46.16||

Translation

विभो O king, वालिना by Vali, परिकालयमानः chased away, अहम् I, तदा then, अभिद्रुतः I ran, तदा then, पुनः again, आवृत्य I turned back, सहसा at once, प्रस्थितः I left.

Meaning

'O king chased thus by Vali, I ran and turned back and ran againfast.

KK-46-17Kishkindha Kanda 46.17

पुनरावर्तमानस्तु वालिनाऽभिद्रुतोद्रुतम्। दिशस्तस्यास्ततो भूयः प्रस्थितो दक्षिणां दिशम्। विन्ध्यपादपसङ्कीर्णां चन्दनद्रुमशोभिताम्।।4.46.17।।

punarāvartamānastu vālinā'bhidrutodrutam| diśastasyāstato bhūyḥ prasthito dakṣiṇāṃ diśam| vindhyapādapasaṅkīrṇāṃ candanadrumaśobhitām||4.46.17||

Translation

पुनः again, आवर्तमानः changing, वलिना by Vali, द्रुतम् fast, अभिद्रुतः chased, ततः then, तस्याः that, दिशः direction, भूयः turned, विन्ध्यपादपसङ्कीर्णाम् filled with the mountains of Vindhya and trees, चन्दनद्रुमशोभिताम् filled with beautiful sandal trees, दक्षिणां दिशम् southern quarter, प्रस्थितः ran.

Meaning

'Then chased by Vali, I changed my present direction from the east towards the southern quarter where Vindhya mountain stood with its, beautiful sandal trees.

KK-46-18Kishkindha Kanda 46.18

द्रुमशैलांस्ततः पश्यन्भूयो दक्षिणतोऽपराम्। पश्चिमां च दिशं प्राप्ता वालिना समभिद्रुतः।।4.46.18।।

drumaśailāṃstatḥ paśyanbhūyo dakṣiṇato'parām| paścimāṃ ca diśṃ prāptā vālinā samabhidrutḥ||4.46.18||

Translation

द्रुमशैलां trees and mountains, दक्षिणतः from the southern quarter, अपराम् another, पश्यन् while seeing, भूयः again, वालिना by Vali, समभिद्रुतः chased, पश्चिमां दिशम् western quarter, प्राप्ताः I reached.

Meaning

'I was looking at the trees and mountains in the southern direction, I reached the western quarter pursued by Vali.

KK-46-19Kishkindha Kanda 46.19

सम्पश्यन्विविधान्देशानस्तं च गिरिसत्तमम्। प्राप्य चास्तं गिरिश्रेष्ठमुत्तरां सम्प्रधावितः।।4.46.19।।

sampaśyanvividhāndeśānastṃ ca girisattamam| prāpya cāstṃ giriśreṣṭhamuttarāṃ sampradhāvitḥ||4.46.19||

Translation

विविधान् many, देशान् places, गिरिसत्तमम् best of mountains, अस्तं च where the Sun sets, पश्यन् while I was seeing, गिरिश्रेष्ठम् foremost of mountains, अस्तम् where the Sun sets, प्राप्य having reached, उत्तराम् northern, सम्प्रधावितः ran.

Meaning

'Looking at the places around, I reached the best of mountains where the Sun sets (I found Vali still chasing me) and ran towards the north.

KK-46-20Kishkindha Kanda 46.20

हिमवन्तं च मेरुं च समुद्रं च तथोत्तरम्। यदा न विन्दं शरणं वालिना समभिद्रुतः।।4.46.20।। तदा मां बुद्धिसम्पन्नो हनूमान्वाक्यमब्रवीत्।

himavantṃ ca meruṃ ca samudrṃ ca tathottaram| yadā na vindṃ śaraṇṃ vālinā samabhidrutḥ||4.46.20|| tadā māṃ buddhisampanno hanūmānvākyamabravīt|

Translation

हिमवन्तं च Himavanta also, मेरुं च Meru also, तथा so also, उत्तरं समुद्रं च even the northern sea, वालिना by Vali, समभिद्रुतः chased, यदा when, शरणम् protection, न विन्दम् I did not get, तदा then, बुद्धिसम्पन्नः wise, हनूमान् Hanuman, माम् to me, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

'I saw Himavan and mount Meru on the north and the northern sea. Still pursued by Vali, I could not know where to go when wise Hanuman spoke to me these words:

KK-46-21-22Kishkindha Kanda 46.21–22 (युग्मम्)

इदानीं मे स्मृतं राजन्यथा वाली हरीश्वरः।।4.46.21।। मतङ्गेन तदा शप्तो ह्यस्मिन्नाश्रममण्डले। प्रविशेद्यदि वै वाली मूर्धाऽस्य शतधा भवेत्।।4.46.22।। तत्र वासस्सुखोऽस्माकं निरुद्विग्नो भविष्यति।

idānīṃ me smṛtṃ rājanyathā vālī harīśvarḥ||4.46.21|| mataṅgena tadā śapto hyasminnāśramamaṇḍale| praviśedyadi vai vālī mūrdhā'sya śatadhā bhavet||4.46.22|| tatra vāsassukho'smākṃ nirudvigno bhaviṣyati|

Translation

राजन् O king, हरीश्वरः king of monkeys, वाली Vali, तदा then, मतङ्गेन by Mathanga, यथा as, शप्तः cursed, मे to me, इदानीम् now, स्मृतम् I remembered, वाली Vali, अस्मिन् in this, आश्रममण्डले hermitage site, प्रविशेद्यदि if he enters, अस्य his, मूर्धा head, शतधा hundred pieces, भवेत् will become, तत्र there, अस्माकम् to us, वासः residence, सुखः happy, निरुद्विग्नः peaceful, भविष्यति will be.

Meaning

'I remembed Matanga's curse to Vali, king of monkeys. Vali would not enter the site of Matanga's hermitage as his head would break into a hundred pieces if he did'. Therefore we thought it would be safe for us to reside in that place.

KK-46-23Kishkindha Kanda 46.23

ततः पर्वतमासाद्य ऋष्यमूकं नृपात्मज।।4.46.23।। न विवेश तदा वाली मतङ्गस्य भयात्तदा।

tatḥ parvatamāsādya ṛṣyamūkṃ nṛpātmaja||4.46.23|| na viveśa tadā vālī mataṅgasya bhayāttadā|

Translation

नृपात्मज O prince Rama, ततः from that place, ऋष्यमूकं पर्वतम् mountain Rishyamuka, तदा then, आसाद्य having reached, वाली Vali, मतङ्गस्य Matanga's, भयात् out of fear of, तदा then, न विवेश did not enter.

Meaning

'O prince Rama then I reached mount Rishyamuka which Vali did not enter out of fear of the curse of Matanga.

KK-46-24Kishkindha Kanda 46.24

एवं मया तदा राजन्प्रत्यक्षमुपलक्षितम्।।4.46.24।। पृथिवीमण्डलं कृत्स्नं गुहामस्यागतस्ततः।

evṃ mayā tadā rājanpratyakṣamupalakṣitam||4.46.24|| pṛthivīmaṇḍalṃ kṛtsnṃ guhāmasyāgatastatḥ|

Translation

राजन् king, एवम् in that manner, तदा then, कत्स्नम् पृथिवीमण्डलम् entire earth, प्रत्यक्षम् saw directly, मया by me, उपलक्षितम् is surveyed, गुहाम् this cave, ततः thereafter, आगतः reached, अस्मि I am.

Meaning

'O king that way I surveyed the entire earth directly and returned to this cave and lived here. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे षटचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fortysixth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
