KK-45-1Kishkindha Kanda 45.1

सर्वांश्चाहूय सुग्रीवः प्लवगान् प्लवगर्षभः। समस्तानब्रवीद्भूयो रामकार्यर्थसिद्धये।।4.45.1।। एवमेतद्विचेतव्यं यन्मया परिकीर्तितम्।

sarvāṃścāhūya sugrīvḥ plavagān plavagarṣabhḥ| samastānabravīdbhūyo rāmakāryarthasiddhaye||4.45.1|| evametadvicetavyṃ yanmayā parikīrtitam|

Translation

प्लवगर्षभः bull of among monkeys, भूयः further, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, सर्वान् all, प्लवगान् vanaras, आहूय called, रामकार्यर्थसिद्धये for fulfilling the objective of Rama, समस्तान् all of them, अब्रवीत् addressed, मया by me, यत् whatever, परिकीर्तितम् described, एवम् in the same way, एतत् thus, विचेतव्यम् you should search.

Meaning

Summoning the entire body of vanaras, Sugriva, the bull among monkeys, said, 'Go to the places I have described and look for Sita in order to fulfil Rama's objective'.

KK-45-2Kishkindha Kanda 45.2

तदुग्रशासनं भर्तुर्विज्ञाय हरिपुङ्गवाः।।4.45.2।। शलभा इव सञ्छाद्य मेदिनीं सम्प्रतस्थिरे।

tadugraśāsanṃ bharturvijñāya haripuṅgavāḥ||4.45.2|| śalabhā iva sañchādya medinīṃ sampratasthire|

Translation

हरिपुङ्गवाः best of monkeys, भर्तुः king's, तत् that, उग्रशासनम् strict order, विज्ञाय having understood, मेदिनीम् the whole earth, शलभा इव like locusts, सञ्छाद्य covered, सम्प्रतस्थिरे started moving.

Meaning

Having understood Sugriva's strict orders, the forces of monkeys started moving. They spread like locusts all over the earth.

KK-45-3Kishkindha Kanda 45.3

रामः प्रस्रवणे तस्मिन्यवसत्सहलक्ष्मणः।।4.45.3।। प्रतीक्षमाणस्तं मासं यस्सीताधिगमे कृतः।

rāmḥ prasravaṇe tasminyavasatsahalakṣmaṇḥ||4.45.3|| pratīkṣamāṇastṃ māsṃ yassītādhigame kṛtḥ|

Translation

रामः Rama, सहलक्ष्मणः along with Lakshmana, यः such, सीताधिगमे sin tracing the whereabouts of Sita, कृतः was fixed, तं मासम् that month, प्रतीक्षमाणः waiting, तस्मिन् प्रस्रवणे on that Prasravana mountain, न्यवसत् stayed.

Meaning

Rama accompanied by Lakshmana stayed back at Prasravana mountain looking forward for the expiry of the month fixed for the monkeys to trace Sita's whereabouts.

KK-45-4Kishkindha Kanda 45.4

उत्तरां तु दिशं रम्यां गिरिराजसमावृताम्।।4.45.4।। प्रतस्थे सहसा वीरो हरिश्शतवलिस्तदा।

uttarāṃ tu diśṃ ramyāṃ girirājasamāvṛtām||4.45.4|| pratasthe sahasā vīro hariśśatavalistadā|

Translation

तदा then, शतवालिः Satavali, वीरः warrior, हरिः monkey, गिरिराजसमावृताम् surrounded by kings of mountains, रम्याम् lovely, उत्तरां दिशम् northern direction, सहसा at once, प्रतस्थे started their journey.

Meaning

Then the monkey warrior Satavali departed for the north, surrounded by kings of mountains.

KK-45-5-6Kishkindha Kanda 45.5–6 (युग्मम्)

पूर्वां दिशं प्रतिययौ विनतो हरियूथपः।।4.45.5।। ताराङ्गदादिसहितः प्लवङ्गो मारुतात्मजः। अगत्याचरितामाशां दक्षिणां हरियूथपः।।4.45.6।।

pūrvāṃ diśṃ pratiyayau vinato hariyūthapḥ||4.45.5|| tārāṅgadādisahitḥ plavaṅgo mārutātmajḥ| agatyācaritāmāśāṃ dakṣiṇāṃ hariyūthapḥ||4.45.6||

Translation

हरियूथपः leader of monkeys, विनतः Vinata, पूर्वां दिशं प्रति towards the east, ययौ started, हरियूथपः leader of the monkeys, मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, प्लवगः monkey, ताराङ्गदादिसहितः along with Tara and Angada, अगस्त्याचरिताम् inhabited by Agastya, दक्षिणाम् आशाम् to the southern quarter.

Meaning

Vinata, leader of the monkeys, set out for the eastern direction.The troop leader, son of the Windgod along with Angada and Tara left for the south inhabited by Agastya.

KK-45-7Kishkindha Kanda 45.7

पश्चिमां तु भृशं घोरां सुषेणः प्लवगेश्वरः। प्रतस्थे हरिशार्दूलो दिशं वरुणपालिताम्।।4.45.7।।

paścimāṃ tu bhṛśṃ ghorāṃ suṣeṇḥ plavageśvarḥ| pratasthe hariśārdūlo diśṃ varuṇapālitām||4.45.7||

Translation

प्लवगेश्वरः chieftain of monkeys, हरिशार्दूलः tiger among monkeys, सुषेणः Sushena, वरुणपालिताम् ruled by Varuna, दिशम् side, भृशम् quickly, घोराम् fearsome, पश्चिमां दिशम् western side, प्रतस्थे started.

Meaning

'The chieftain Sushena, tiger among the monkeys, started quickly for the fearsome western direction ruled by Varuna.

KK-45-8Kishkindha Kanda 45.8

ततस्सर्वा दिशो राजा चोदयित्वा यथातथम्। कपिसेनापतीन्मुख्यान्मुमोद सुखितस्सुखम्।।4.45.8।।

tatassarvā diśo rājā codayitvā yathātatham| kapisenāpatīnmukhyānmumoda sukhitassukham||4.45.8||

Translation

ततः then, मुख्यान् of chieftans, राजा king, कपिसेनापतीन् chief of the army of monkeys, यथातथम् properly, सर्वाःदिशः all quarters, चोदयित्वा having sent, सुखितः relieved, सुखम् मुमोद rejoiced.

Meaning

Sugriva, chief of the army of monkeys, having sent the leaders to all quarters felt relieved and rejoiced.

KK-45-9Kishkindha Kanda 45.9

एवं सम्बोधितास्सर्वे राज्ञा वानरयूथपाः। स्वां स्वां दिशमभिप्रत्त्य त्वरिता सम्प्रतस्थिरे।।4.45.9।।

evṃ sambodhitāssarve rājñā vānarayūthapāḥ| svāṃ svāṃ diśamabhiprattya tvaritā sampratasthire||4.45.9||

Translation

राज्ञा by the king, एवम् in that way, सम्बोधिताः having been addressed, सर्वे all, वानरयूथपाः leaders of the monkeys, स्वां स्वाम् in their respective, दिशम् direction, अभिप्रेत्य bound, त्वरिताः quickly, सम्प्रतस्थिरे departed from there.

Meaning

Addressed thus by the king, all the monkeys departed quickly from there for their respective directions with all enthusiasm.

KK-45-10Kishkindha Kanda 45.10

नदन्तश्चोन्नदन्तश्च गर्जन्तश्च प्लवङ्गमाः। क्ष्वेलन्तो धावमानाश्च विनदन्तो महाबलाः।।4.45.10।।

nadantaśconnadantaśca garjantaśca plavaṅgamāḥ| kṣvelanto dhāvamānāśca vinadanto mahābalāḥ||4.45.10||

Translation

महाबलाः mighty, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, नदन्तः making noise, उन्नदन्तश्च loudly, गर्जन्तश्च chattering, क्ष्वेलन्तः leaping, विनदन्तः screaming, धावमानाश्च gallopping.

Meaning

The powerful monkeys went gallopping and chattering, leaping and screaming.

KK-45-11Kishkindha Kanda 45.11

एवं सम्बोदितास्सर्वे राज्ञा वानरयूथपाः। आनयिष्यामहे सीतां हनिष्यामश्च रावणम्।।4.45.11।।

evṃ samboditāssarve rājñā vānarayūthapāḥ| ānayiṣyāmahe sītāṃ haniṣyāmaśca rāvaṇam||4.45.11||

Translation

राज्ञा by the king, एवम् in that way, सम्बोदिता:having addressed, सर्वे all, वानरयूथपाः the leaders of monkeys, सीताम् Sita, आनयिष्यामहे we will get, रावणम् Ravana, हनिष्यामश्च we will kill.

Meaning

Thus addressed by the king, the leaders of the monkeys shouted, 'We will kill Ravana and get back Sita'.

KK-45-12Kishkindha Kanda 45.12

अहमेको हनिष्यामि रावणं प्राप्तमाहवे। ततश्चोन्मथ्य सहसा हरिष्ये जनकात्मजाम्।।4.45.12।।

ahameko haniṣyāmi rāvaṇṃ prāptamāhave| tataśconmathya sahasā hariṣye janakātmajām||4.45.12||

Translation

अहम् I am, एकः alone, आहवे in a war, प्राप्तम् faced, रावणम् Ravana, हनिष्यामि I will kill, ततश्च there after, उन्मथ्य after churning, सहसा at once, जनकात्मजाम् Janaka's daughter, आहरिष्ये I will get.

Meaning

'I shall kill Ravana singlehanded in war and quickly get back Janaka's daughter churning (the enemy army).' (said one)

KK-45-13Kishkindha Kanda 45.13

वेपमानां श्रमेणाद्य भवद्भिः स्थीयतामिति। एक एवाहरिष्यामि पातालादपि जानकीम्।।4.45.13।।

vepamānāṃ śrameṇādya bhavadbhiḥ sthīyatāmiti| eka evāhariṣyāmi pātālādapi jānakīm||4.45.13||

Translation

श्रमेण with exhaustion, वेपमानाम् trembling, जानकीम् Sita, पातालादपि even from the nether most world, एक एव I alone, आहरिष्यामि I will get, अद्य now, भवद्भिः you, स्थीयताम् wait, इति thus.

Meaning

'I will alone restore Sita, exhausted and trembling (in fear), even from the nether world. Wait here' (said another leader).

KK-45-14Kishkindha Kanda 45.14

वधिष्याम्यहं वृक्षान् दारयिष्याम्यहं गिरीन्। धरणीं दारयिष्यामि क्षोभयिष्यामि सागरान्।।4.45.14।।

vadhiṣyāmyahṃ vṛkṣān dārayiṣyāmyahṃ girīn| dharaṇīṃ dārayiṣyāmi kṣobhayiṣyāmi sāgarān||4.45.14||

Translation

अहम् I, वृक्षान् trees, वधिष्यामि will smash, गिरीन् mountains, दारयिष्यामि I will cleave, धरणीम् earth, दारयिष्यामि break open, सागरान् seas, क्षोभयिष्यामि I will churn.

Meaning

'I will smash trees, shatter mountains, cleave the earth and churn up the seas'. (said a another).

KK-45-15Kishkindha Kanda 45.15

अहं योजनसङ्ख्यायाः प्लविता नात्र संशयः। शतं योजनसङ्ख्यायाश्शतं समधिकं ह्यहम्।।4.45.15।।

ahṃ yojanasaṅkhyāyāḥ plavitā nātra sṃśayḥ| śatṃ yojanasaṅkhyāyāśśatṃ samadhikṃ hyaham||4.45.15||

Translation

अहम् I, योजनसङ्ख्यायाः शतम् cross a hundred yojanas, प्लविता leap, अहम् I, शतयोजनसङ्ख्यायाः cross a distance of hundred yojanas, समधिकम् more, अत्र here, संशयः doubt, न no.

Meaning

'I can doubtless cross a distance of a hundred yojanas' said one. Another said,' I can leap a hundred yojanas more'.
