KK-44-1Kishkindha Kanda 44.1

विशेषेण तु सुग्रीवो हनूमत्यर्थमुक्तवान्। स हि तस्मिन्हरिश्रेष्ठे निश्चितार्थोऽर्थसाधने।।4.44.1।।

viśeṣeṇa tu sugrīvo hanūmatyarthamuktavān| sa hi tasminhariśreṣṭhe niścitārtho'rthasādhane||4.44.1||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, विशेषेण particularly, हनूमति in Hanuman, अर्थम् purpose (of the mission), उक्तवान् mentioned, सः he, अर्थसाधने in accomplishing the goal, तस्मिन् हरिश्रेष्ठे great among the monkeys, निश्चितार्थः हि one who was sure of success.

Meaning

Sugriva mentioned about the capacity of Hanuman, the best of monkeys as he knew he would surely succeed in accomplishing the task.

KK-44-2Kishkindha Kanda 44.2

अब्रवीच्च हनूमन्तं विक्रान्तमनिलात्मजम्। सुग्रीवः परमप्रीतः प्रभु स्सर्ववनौकसाम्।।4.44.2।।

abravīcca hanūmantṃ vikrāntamanilātmajam| sugrīvḥ paramaprītḥ prabhu ssarvavanaukasām||4.44.2||

Translation

सर्ववनौकसाम् for all the monkeys, प्रभुः king, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, परमप्रीतः very pleased, विक्रान्तम् advancing, अनिलात्मजम् son of the Windgod, हनूमन्तम् to Hanumanta, अब्रवीच्च spoke.

Meaning

Sugriva, king of the monkeys, spoke, highly pleased, to Hanuman, the warrior son of the Windgod advancing towards him:

KK-44-3Kishkindha Kanda 44.3

न भूमौ नान्तरिक्षे वा नाम्बरे नामरालये। नाप्सु वा गतिसङ्गं ते पश्यामि हरिपुङ्गव।।4.44.3।।

na bhūmau nāntarikṣe vā nāmbare nāmarālaye| nāpsu vā gatisaṅgṃ te paśyāmi haripuṅgava||4.44.3||

Translation

हरिपुङ्गव O best of monkeys, भूमौ on earth, ते to you, गतिसङ्गम् who can equal your movement, न पश्यामि I do not see, अन्तरिक्षे वा or in space, न nor, अम्बरे in sky, न nor, अमरालये in heaven, न nor, अप्सु वा or in water.

Meaning

'O best of monkeys I scarcely see a hero comparable to your speed on earth or in space or sky or heaven or water.

KK-44-4Kishkindha Kanda 44.4

सासुरास्सहगन्धर्वास्सनागनरदेवताः। विदिता स्सर्वलोकास्ते ससागरधराधराः।।4.44.4।।

sāsurāssahagandharvāssanāganaradevatāḥ| viditā ssarvalokāste sasāgaradharādharāḥ||4.44.4||

Translation

सासुराः including demons, सहगन्धर्वाः along with gandharvas, सनागनरदेवताः along with the nagas, men and gods, ससागरधराधराः including on the seas, mountains, सर्वलोकाः all worlds, ते to you, विदिताः are known.

KK-44-5Kishkindha Kanda 44.5

गतिर्वेगश्च तेजश्च लाघवं च महाकपे। पितुस्ते सदृशं वीर मारुतस्य महौजसः।।4.44.5।।

gatirvegaśca tejaśca lāghavṃ ca mahākape| pituste sadṛśṃ vīra mārutasya mahaujasḥ||4.44.5||

Translation

वीर O hero, महाकपे O great monkey, ते your, गतिः in movement, वेगश्च in speed, तेजश्च in brilliance, लाघवं च in movement and speed, पितुः father's, महौजसः mighty, मारुतस्य of the Windgod, सदृशम् similar.

Meaning

'O hero, O great monkey in movement, speed, brilliance and quickness you are similar to your mighty father, the Windgod.

KK-44-6Kishkindha Kanda 44.6

तेजसा वापि ते भूतं न समं भुवि न विद्यते। तद्यथा लभ्यते सीता तत्त्वमेवोपपादय।।4.44.6।।

tejasā vāpi te bhūtṃ na samṃ bhuvi na vidyate| tadyathā labhyate sītā tattvamevopapādaya||4.44.6||

Translation

तेजसा वापि in brilliance, ते to you, समम् equal, भूतम् a being, भुवि in the world, न विद्यते does not exist, तत् therefore, सीता Sita, यथा as such, लभ्यते is secured, तत् that way, त्वमेव you alone, अपपादय should go ahead.

Meaning

'I do not know any living being equal to you in brilliance on this earth. Therefore, you alone know how to secure Sita.Go ahead

KK-44-7Kishkindha Kanda 44.7

त्वय्येव हनुम न्नस्ति बलं बुद्धिः पराक्रमः। देशकालानुवृत्तिश्च नयश्च नयपण्डित।।4.44.7।।

tvayyeva hanuma nnasti balṃ buddhiḥ parākramḥ| deśakālānuvṛttiśca nayaśca nayapaṇḍita||4.44.7||

Translation

नयपण्डित O learned one, हनुमन् Hanuman, बलम् strength, बुद्धिः wisdom, पराक्रमः prowess, देशकालानुवृत्तिश्च acting in accordance with time and place, नयश्च knowledge of statecraft, त्वय्येव in you only, अस्ति I exist.

Meaning

'O learned Hanuman I am of opinion that in you alone rest strength, wisdom, prowess, ability to act in accordance with time and place and knowledge of statecraft'.

KK-44-8Kishkindha Kanda 44.8

ततः कार्यसमासङ्गमवगम्य हनूमति। विदित्वा हनुमन्तं च चिन्तयामास राघवः।।4.44.8।।

tatḥ kāryasamāsaṅgamavagamya hanūmati| viditvā hanumantṃ ca cintayāmāsa rāghavḥ||4.44.8||

Translation

ततः then, राघवः Rama, हनूमति in Hanuman, कार्यसमासङ्गम् responsibility of achieving the goal, अवगम्य having understood, हनुमन्तं च Hanuman also, विदित्वा knowing, चिन्तयामास reflected.

Meaning

Having understood that Hanuman was capable of accomplishing the goal, Rama started reflecting as follows:

KK-44-9Kishkindha Kanda 44.9

सर्वथा निश्चितार्थोऽयं हनूमति हरीश्वरः। निश्चितार्थकरश्चापि हनूमान्कार्यसाधने।।4.44.9।।

sarvathā niścitārtho'yṃ hanūmati harīśvarḥ| niścitārthakaraścāpi hanūmānkāryasādhane||4.44.9||

Translation

अयम् this, हरीश्वरः monkey king, सर्वथा all means, हनूमति Hanumanta, निश्चितार्थः sure, कार्यसाधने in accomplishing the task, हनुमान् Hanuman, निश्चितार्थकरश्चापि sure of accomplishing the task.

Meaning

'This monkey king, Sugriva has confidence in Hanuman that he will by all means accomplish the task.'

KK-44-10Kishkindha Kanda 44.10

तदेवं प्रस्थितस्यास्य परिज्ञातस्य कर्मभिः। भर्त्रा परिगृहीतस्य ध्रुवः कार्यफलोदयः।।4.44.10।।

tadevṃ prasthitasyāsya parijñātasya karmabhiḥ| bhartrā parigṛhītasya dhruvḥ kāryaphalodayḥ||4.44.10||

Translation

तत् since, एवम् in that way, प्रस्थितस्य of a person who goes forth, कर्मभिः with his tasks, परिज्ञातस्य who is known, भर्त्रा king Sugriva, परिगृहीतस्य favoured, अस्य his, कार्यफलोदयः success in his task, ध्रुवः sure.

Meaning

'The king Sugriva knows for sure that if Hanuman goes forth, success is assured. So he favours him.'

KK-44-11Kishkindha Kanda 44.11

तं समीक्ष्य महातेजा व्यवसायोत्तरं हरिम्। कृतार्थ इव संवृत्तः प्रहृष्टेन्द्रियमानसः।।4.44.11।।

tṃ samīkṣya mahātejā vyavasāyottarṃ harim| kṛtārtha iva sṃvṛttḥ prahṛṣṭendriyamānasḥ||4.44.11||

Translation

महातेजाः mighty Rama, व्यवसायोत्तरम् with a resolute answer, तम् him, Hanuman, हरिम् monkey, समीक्ष्य on looking at, प्रहृष्टेन्द्रियमानसः very glad at heart, कृतार्थ इव as if he has accomplished, संवृत्तः he became.

Meaning

The mighty Rama was happy in his heart to see Hanuman. He felt as if the task is achieved.

KK-44-12Kishkindha Kanda 44.12

ददौ तस्य ततः प्रीतस्स्वनामाङ्कोपशोभितम्। अङ्गुलीयमभिज्ञानं राजपुत्र्याः परन्तपः।।4.44.12।।

dadau tasya tatḥ prītassvanāmāṅkopaśobhitam| aṅgulīyamabhijñānṃ rājaputryāḥ parantapḥ||4.44.12||

Translation

ततः then, परन्तपः scorcher of enemies, प्रीतः delighted, स्वनामाङ्कोपशोभितम् one on which his name is inscribed, अङ्गुलीयम् ring, राजपुत्र्या: to the princess, अभिज्ञानम् as a token of recognition, तस्य to him, ददौ gave.

Meaning

Rama, scorcher of enemies, gladly gave Hanuman a ring inscribed with his name as a mark of identification by princess (Sita). And said:

KK-44-13Kishkindha Kanda 44.13

अनेन त्वां हरिश्रेष्ठ चिह्नेन जनकात्मजा। मत्सकाशादनुप्राप्तमनुद्विग्नाऽनुपश्यति।।4.44.13।।

anena tvāṃ hariśreṣṭha cihnena janakātmajā| matsakāśādanuprāptamanudvignā'nupaśyati||4.44.13||

Translation

हरिश्रेष्ठ O distinguished monkey, अनेन by this, चिह्नेन by this signet, जनकात्मजा Janaka's daughter, त्वाम् you, मत्सकाशात् from me, अनुप्राप्तम् have come to her, अनुद्विग्ना without any hesitation, अनुपश्यति will greet you.

Meaning

'O distinguished monkey Janaka's daughter will greet you without any hesitation when you present this signet to her. She will know that you have come from me.

KK-44-14Kishkindha Kanda 44.14

व्यवसायश्च ते वीर सत्त्वयुक्तश्च विक्रमः। सुग्रीवस्य च सन्देशस्सिद्धिं कथयतीव मे।।4.44.14।।

vyavasāyaśca te vīra sattvayuktaśca vikramḥ| sugrīvasya ca sandeśassiddhiṃ kathayatīva me||4.44.14||

Translation

वीर O hero, ते your, व्यवसायः efforts, सत्त्वयुक्तः endowed with prowess, विक्रमश्च courage, सुग्रीवस्य Sugriva's, सन्देशश्च message to you, मे to me, सिद्धिम् achievement, कथयतीव as if telling me.

Meaning

'O great hero your enterprise, prowess coupled with courage and Sugriva's message to you seem to indicate to me about the success of your mission'.

KK-44-15Kishkindha Kanda 44.15

स तद्गृह्य हरिश्रेष्ठः स्थाप्य मूर्ध्नि कृताञ्जलिः। वन्दित्वा चरणौ चैव प्रस्थितः प्लवगोत्तमः।।4.44.15।।

sa tadgṛhya hariśreṣṭhḥ sthāpya mūrdhni kṛtāñjaliḥ| vanditvā caraṇau caiva prasthitḥ plavagottamḥ||4.44.15||

Translation

प्लवगोत्तमः foremost of the monkeys, सः he, हरिश्रेष्ठः greatest of monkeys, गृह्य after taking, मूर्ध्नि on his forehead, स्थाप्य after placing, कृताञ्जलिः saluted with folded palms, चरणौ चैव and the feet also, वन्दित्वा having offered salutation, प्रस्थितः departed.

Meaning

The foremost among the monkeys took the ring given to him, placed it on his forehead and saluated it with folded palms. He then prostrated at the feet of Rama and departed.

KK-44-16Kishkindha Kanda 44.16

स तत्प्रकर्षन् हरीणां महद्बलं बभूव वीरः पवनात्मजः कपिः। गताम्बुदे व्योम्नि विशुद्धमण्डलः शशीव नक्षत्रगणोपशोभितः।।4.44.16।।

sa tatprakarṣan harīṇāṃ mahadbalṃ babhūva vīrḥ pavanātmajḥ kapiḥ| gatāmbude vyomni viśuddhamaṇḍalḥ śaśīva nakṣatragaṇopaśobhitḥ||4.44.16||

Translation

हरीणाम् of monkeys, महत् great, तत् बलम् that army, प्रकर्षन् being foremost among them, वीरः hero, पवनात्मजः son of the Windgod, सः कपिः that monkey, गताम्बुदे cloudless, व्योम्नि in the sky, नक्षत्रगणोपशोभितः adorned by hosts of stars, शशीव like the Moon, बभूव appeared.

Meaning

Like the moon adorned by hosts of stars in the cloudless sky, the mighty heroic Hanuman, the great son of the Windgod, shone in the midst of the army of monkeys.

KK-44-17Kishkindha Kanda 44.17

अतिबल बलमाश्रितस्तवाहं हरिवरविक्रम विक्रमैरनल्पैः। पवनसुत यथाऽभिगम्यते सा जनकसुता हनुमं स्तथा कुरुष्व।।4.44.17।।

atibala balamāśritastavāhṃ harivaravikrama vikramairanalpaiḥ| pavanasuta yathā'bhigamyate sā janakasutā hanumṃ stathā kuruṣva||4.44.17||

Translation

अतिबल O mighty one, हरिवरविक्रम O valiant among the vanaras, पवनसुत O son of the Windgod, हनुमन् O Hanuman, अहम् I, तव your, बलम् strength, आश्रितः depending, अनल्पैः with mighty, विक्रमैः valour, सा that, जनकसुता daughter of Janaka, यथा in such a way, अभिगम्यते can be found, तथा in such a way that, कुरुष्व do.

Meaning

O Hanuman son of the Windgod, O valiant among the Vanaras, I bank on your strength. Do whatever you can with your mighty valour so that the daughter of Janaka can be found. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे चतुश्चत्वारिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fortyfourth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
