AK-83-1Ayodhya Kanda 83.1

तत स्समुत्थितः काल्यमास्थाय स्यन्दनोत्तमम्। प्रययौ भरतश्शीघ्रं रामदर्शनकाङ्क्षया।।2.83.1।।

tata ssamutthitḥ kālyamāsthāya syandanottamam| prayayau bharataśśīghrṃ rāmadarśanakāṅkṣayā||2.83.1||

Translation

ततः then, भरतः Bharata, काल्यम् at dawn, समुत्थितः risen, स्यन्दनोत्तमम् best chariot, आस्थाय having boarded, रामदर्शनकाङ्क्षया longing to see Rama, शीघ्रम् swiftly, प्रययौ set forth.

Meaning

Getting up at dawn, Bharata boarded his excellent chariot and set forth swiftly, longing to see Rama.

AK-83-2Ayodhya Kanda 83.2

अग्रतः प्रययुस्तस्य सर्वे मन्त्रिपुरोधसः। अधिरुह्य हयैर्युक्तान्रथान्सूर्यरथोपमान्।।2.83.2।।

agratḥ prayayustasya sarve mantripurodhasḥ| adhiruhya hayairyuktānrathānsūryarathopamān||2.83.2||

Translation

सर्वे all, मन्त्रिपुरोधस: ministers and priests, हयैः horses, युक्तान् harnessed, सूर्यरथोपमान् resembling the chariot of the Sun, रथान् chariots, अधिरुह्य having mounted, तस्य his, अग्रतः in front of, प्रययुः went.

Meaning

All the ministers and priests went ahead of Bharata mounting their chariots, harnessed with horses and resembling the chariot of the Sun god.

AK-83-3Ayodhya Kanda 83.3

नवनागसहस्राणि कल्पितानि यथाविधि। अन्वयुर्भरतं यान्तमिक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दनम्।।2.83.3।।

navanāgasahasrāṇi kalpitāni yathāvidhi| anvayurbharatṃ yāntamikṣvākukulanandanam||2.83.3||

Translation

यथाविधि as per tradition, कल्पितानि arranged, नवनागसहस्राणि nine thousand elephants, यान्तम् while going, इक्ष्वाकुकुलनन्दनम् the delight of the house of Ikshvakus, भरतम् Bharata, अन्वयुः followed.

Meaning

As per tradition, nine thousand elephants were arranged to follow Bharata, delight of the race of the Ikshvakus as he set out.

AK-83-4Ayodhya Kanda 83.4

षष्टी रथसहस्राणि धन्विनो विविधायुधाः। अन्वयुर्भरतं यान्तं राजपुत्रं यशस्विनम्।।2.83.4।।

ṣaṣṭī rathasahasrāṇi dhanvino vividhāyudhāḥ| anvayurbharatṃ yāntṃ rājaputrṃ yaśasvinam||2.83.4||

Translation

षष्टि: sixty, रथसहस्राणि thousands of chariots, विविधायुधा: men with weapons of every kind, धन्विनः archers, यान्तम् while going, यशस्विनम् illustrious, राजपुत्रम् king's son, भरतम् Bharata, अन्वयुः followed.

Meaning

Sixty thousands chariots and many archers holding weapons of every kind followed the illustrious prince Bharata as he went.

AK-83-5Ayodhya Kanda 83.5

शतं सहस्राण्यश्वानां समारूढानि राघवम्। अन्वयुर्भरतं यान्तं सत्यसन्धं जितेन्द्रियम्।।2.83.5।।

śatṃ sahasrāṇyaśvānāṃ samārūḍhāni rāghavam| anvayurbharatṃ yāntṃ satyasandhṃ jitendriyam||2.83.5||

Translation

राघवम् born in the Raghu race (Bharata), सत्यसन्धम् adhering to truth, जितेन्द्रियम् one who conquered passions, यान्तम् while going, भरतम् Bharata, समारूढानि mounted by riders, अश्वानाम् of horses, शतम् hundred, सहस्राणि thousand, अन्वयुः followed.

Meaning

One hundred thousand horses each mounted by a rider followed Bharata, one who had conquered his passion and adhered to truth.

AK-83-6Ayodhya Kanda 83.6

कैकेयी च सुमित्रा च कौसल्या च यशस्विनी। रामानयनसंहृष्टा ययुर्यानेन भास्वता।।2.83.6।।

kaikeyī ca sumitrā ca kausalyā ca yaśasvinī| rāmānayanasṃhṛṣṭā yayuryānena bhāsvatā||2.83.6||

Translation

कैकेयी च Kaikeyi as well as, सुमित्रा च Sumitra also, यशस्विनी illustrious, कौसल्या च Kausalya also, रामानयनसंहृष्टाः delighted at the thought of bringing Rama back, भास्वता by a resplendent, यानेन by the chariot, ययुः went.

Meaning

Kaikeyi, Sumitra as well as the illustrious Kausalya travelled by a resplendent chariot, delighted with the thought of bringing Rama back.

AK-83-7Ayodhya Kanda 83.7

प्रयाताश्चार्यसङ्घाता रामं द्रष्टुं सलक्ष्मणम्। तस्यैव च कथाश्चित्राः कुर्वाणा हृष्टमानसाः।।2.83.7।।

prayātāścāryasaṅghātā rāmṃ draṣṭuṃ salakṣmaṇam| tasyaiva ca kathāścitrāḥ kurvāṇā hṛṣṭamānasāḥ||2.83.7||

Translation

आर्यसङ्घाताश्च venerable groups of people, हृष्टमानसाः delighted in their hearts, चित्राः various, तस्यैव Rama's only, कथाः accomplishments, कुर्वाणाः doing, सलक्ष्मणम् with Lakshmana, रामम् Rama, द्रष्टुम् to see, प्रयाताः went forth.

Meaning

Venerable people in groups, narrating various accomplishments of Rama and eager to see him with Lakshmana, proceeded in a delightful mood.

AK-83-8Ayodhya Kanda 83.8

मेघश्यामं महाबाहुं स्थिरसत्त्वं दृढव्रतम्। कदा द्रक्ष्यामहे रामं जगत श्शोकनाशनम्।।2.83.8।।

meghaśyāmṃ mahābāhuṃ sthirasattvṃ dṛḍhavratam| kadā drakṣyāmahe rāmṃ jagata śśokanāśanam||2.83.8||

Translation

मेघश्यामम् darkblue like raincloud, महाबाहुम् the mightyarmed, स्थिरसत्त्वम् firm in strength, दृढव्रतम् steadfast in vows, जगतः of this world, शोकनाशनम् destroyer of sorrow, रामम् Rama, कदा when, द्रक्ष्यामहे shall see?

Meaning

When shall we see that mightyarmed Rama of darkblue complexion like the raincloud, firm in strength and steadfast in vows and the destroyer of the sorrows of this world?

AK-83-9Ayodhya Kanda 83.9

दृष्ट एव हि न श्शोकमपनेष्यति राघवः। तम स्सर्वस्य लोकस्य समुद्यन्निव भास्करः।।2.83.9।।

dṛṣṭa eva hi na śśokamapaneṣyati rāghavḥ| tama ssarvasya lokasya samudyanniva bhāskarḥ||2.83.9||

Translation

समुद्यन् rising, भास्करः Sun, सर्वस्य of the entire, लोकस्य world's, तमः इव like darkness, राघवः Rama, दृष्ट एव at his sight alone, नः our, शोकम् sorrow, अपनेष्यति will dispel.

Meaning

At his sight alone our sorrows will be dispelled, the way the darkness of the entire world is dispelled by the rising Sun.

AK-83-10Ayodhya Kanda 83.10

इत्येवं कथयन्तस्ते सम्प्रहृष्टाः कथा श्शुभाः। परिष्वजानाश्चान्योन्यं ययुर्नागरिका जनाः।।2.83.10।।

ityevṃ kathayantaste samprahṛṣṭāḥ kathā śśubhāḥ| pariṣvajānāścānyonyṃ yayurnāgarikā janāḥ||2.83.10||

Translation

ते they, नागरिकाः जनाः inhabitants of the city, इत्येवम् in this way, शुभाः delightful, कथाः achievements, कथयन्तः narrating, सम्प्रहृष्टाः joyfully, अन्योन्यम् mutually, परिष्वजानाश्च embracing also, ययुः proceeded.

Meaning

The inhabitants of the town proceeded joyfully, narrating Rama's delightful achievements on their way by embracing one another.

AK-83-11Ayodhya Kanda 83.11

ये च तत्रापरे सर्वे सम्मता ये च नैगमाः। रामं प्रति ययुर्हृष्टा स्सर्वाः प्रकृतयस्तथा।।2.83.11।।

ye ca tatrāpare sarve sammatā ye ca naigamāḥ| rāmṃ prati yayurhṛṣṭā ssarvāḥ prakṛtayastathā||2.83.11||

Translation

तत्र there, ये च अपरे all the others, सम्मताः respectable, ये च नैगमाः those merchants, तथा similarly, सर्वाः all, प्रकृतयः subjects, हृष्टाः delighted, रामम् प्रति to Rama, ययुः went along.

Meaning

Respectable city folks, like traders and other subjects went along in great delight towards Rama.

AK-83-12-15Ayodhya Kanda 83.12–15 (कलापकम्)

मणिकाराश्च ये केचित्कुम्भकाराश्च शोभनाः। सूत्रकर्मकृतश्चैव ये च शस्त्रोपजीविनः।2.83.12।। मयूरकाः क्राकचिका रोचका वेधकास्तथा। दन्तकारा स्सुधाकारा स्तथा गन्धोपजीविनः।।2.83.13।। सुवर्णकाराः प्रख्यातास्तथा कम्बलधावकाः। स्नापकोष्णोदका वैद्याधूपकाश्शौण्डिकास्तथा।।2.83.14।। रजकास्तुन्नवायाश्च ग्रामघोषमहत्तराः। शैलूषाश्च सह स्त्रीभिर्ययुः कैवर्तकास्तथा।।2.83.15।।

maṇikārāśca ye kecitkumbhakārāśca śobhanāḥ| sūtrakarmakṛtaścaiva ye ca śastropajīvinḥ|2.83.12|| mayūrakāḥ krākacikā rocakā vedhakāstathā| dantakārā ssudhākārā stathā gandhopajīvinḥ||2.83.13|| suvarṇakārāḥ prakhyātāstathā kambaladhāvakāḥ| snāpakoṣṇodakā vaidyādhūpakāśśauṇḍikāstathā||2.83.14|| rajakāstunnavāyāśca grāmaghoṣamahattarāḥ| śailūṣāśca saha strībhiryayuḥ kaivartakāstathā||2.83.15||

Translation

ये those, केचित् some others, मणिकाराः gempolishers, शोभनाः richly decorated, कुम्भकाराश्च potters, ये शस्त्रोपजीविनः those who live on making weapons (weaponsmiths), सूत्रकर्मकृतश्चैव those who work with thread (weavers), मयूरकाः makers of adornments with peacock feathers, क्राकचिकाः those who work with saws (sawyers), रोचकाः makers of artificial ornaments, वेधकाः perforators (of shells and ornaments), तथा also, दन्तकाराः artists who work with ivory, सुधाकाराः those engaged in whitewashing, तथा also, गन्धोपजीविनः subsisting on selling fragrant essences (perfumers), प्रख्याताः renowned, सुवर्णकाराः goldsmiths, तथा also, कम्भलधावकाः blanketcleaners, स्नापकोष्णोदकाः hot bath attendants, वैद्याः physicians, शौण्डिकाः distillers and sellers of spiritual liquor (vintners), धूपकाः incense merchants, रजकाः washermen, तुन्नवायाश्च those who do sewing work (tailors), ग्रामघोषमहत्तराः important people in villages and hamlets where cowherds reside, स्त्रीभिः सह along with women, शैलूषाः actors, तथा similarly, कैवर्तकाः fishermen, ययुः went.

Meaning

Gempolishers, potters, weaponsmiths, weavers, makers of adornments with peacock feathers, sawyers, makers of artificial ornaments, perforators of shells and ornaments, ivoryworkers, whitewashers, purveyors of fragrant essences, renowned goldsmiths, blanketcleaners, hotbath attendants, physicians, vintners, incense merchants, washermen, tailors, headmen of villages and hamlets, actors along with their wives, fishermen -- all followed Bharata.

AK-83-16Ayodhya Kanda 83.16

समाहिता वेदविदो ब्राह्मणा वृत्तसम्मताः। गोरथैर्भरतं यान्तमनुजग्मु स्सहस्रशः।।2.83.16।।

samāhitā vedavido brāhmaṇā vṛttasammatāḥ| gorathairbharatṃ yāntamanujagmu ssahasraśḥ||2.83.16||

Translation

समाहिताः with composed mind, वृत्तसम्मताः renowned for their virtuous conduct, वेदविदः learned in the Vedas, सहस्रशः in thousands, ब्राह्मणाः brahmins, यान्तम् departing, भरतम् Bharata, गोरथैः on bullock carts, अनुजग्मुः followed.

Meaning

Brahmins learned in the Vedas and renowned for their virtuous conduct followed Bharta in their thousands on bullock carts with composed minds.

AK-83-17Ayodhya Kanda 83.17

सुवेषा श्शुद्धवसनास्ताम्रमृष्टानुलेपनाः। सर्वे ते विविधैर्यानै श्शनैर्भरतमन्वयुः।।2.83.17।।

suveṣā śśuddhavasanāstāmramṛṣṭānulepanāḥ| sarve te vividhairyānai śśanairbharatamanvayuḥ||2.83.17||

Translation

सुवेषाः welldressed, शुद्धवसनाः in clean clothing, ताम्रमृष्टानुलेपनाः anointed with pure red sandalpaste, ते सर्वे all those, विविधैः various, यानैः on vehicles, शनैः slowly, भरतम् Bharata, अन्वयुः followed.

Meaning

Dressed well in clean clothes and anointed with pure red sandalpaste, they all slowly followed Bharata, mounting on various vehicles.

AK-83-18Ayodhya Kanda 83.18

प्रहृष्टमुदिता सेना साऽन्वयात्कैकयीसुतम्। भ्रातुरानयने यान्तं भरतं भ्रातृवत्सलम्।।2.83.18।।

prahṛṣṭamuditā senā sā'nvayātkaikayīsutam| bhrāturānayane yāntṃ bharatṃ bhrātṛvatsalam||2.83.18||

Translation

प्रहृष्टमुदिता overwhelmed with joy and cheer, सा सेना that army, भ्रातुः brother's, आनयने to bring back, यान्तम् set out, कैकयीसुतम् Kaikeyi's son (Bharata), भ्रातृवत्सलम् to his brother, Rama, भरतम् Bharata, अन्वयात् followed.

Meaning

The army, overwhelmed with joy and cheer followed the devoted brother Bharata who had set out to bring back Rama.

AK-83-19-20Ayodhya Kanda 83.19–20 (युग्मम्)

ते गत्वा दूरमध्वानं रथयानाश्वकुञ्जरैः। समासेदुस्ततो गङ्गां शृङ्गीबेरपुरं प्रति।।2.83.19।। यत्र रामसखो वीरो गुहो ज्ञातिगणैर्वृतः। निवसत्यप्रमादेन देशं तं परिपालयन्।।2.83.20।।

te gatvā dūramadhvānṃ rathayānāśvakuñjaraiḥ| samāsedustato gaṅgāṃ śṛṅgīberapurṃ prati||2.83.19|| yatra rāmasakho vīro guho jñātigaṇairvṛtḥ| nivasatyapramādena deśṃ tṃ paripālayan||2.83.20||

Translation

ते they, रथयानाश्वकुञ्जरैः on chariots, carriages, horses and elephants, दूरम् a great distance, अध्वानम् the path, गत्वा having travelled, ततः thereafter, रामसखः Rama's friend, वीरः valiant, गुहः Guha, ज्ञातिगणैः with relatives, वृतः surrounded by, तम् that, देशम् country, अप्रमादेन vigilantly, परिपालयन् ruling, यत्र where, निवसति living, शृङ्गीबेरपुरं प्रति near Srngiberapura, गङ्गाम् Ganges, समासेदुः reached.

Meaning

After travelling a long distance on chariots, carriages, horses and elephants, they reached the river Ganga close to Srngiberapura, a country ruled vigilantly by Rama's friend, the valiant Guha who lived there along with his relatives.

AK-83-21Ayodhya Kanda 83.21

उपेत्य तीरं गङ्गायाश्चक्रवाकैरलङ्कृतम्। व्यवातिष्ठत सा सेना भरतस्यानुयायिनी।।2.83.21।।

upetya tīrṃ gaṅgāyāścakravākairalaṅkṛtam| vyavātiṣṭhata sā senā bharatasyānuyāyinī||2.83.21||

Translation

भरतस्य अनुयायिनी following Bharata, सा सेना that army, चक्रवाकैः with chakravakas (the ruddy geese), अलङ्कृतम् graced, गङ्गायाः river Ganga's, तीरम् bank, उपेत्य having reached, व्यवातिष्ठत halted there.

Meaning

The army following Bharata reached the bank of the river Ganga, graced by chakravakas (ruddy geese) and halted there.

AK-83-22Ayodhya Kanda 83.22

निरीक्ष्यानुगतां सेनां तां च गङ्गां शिवोदकाम्। भरतस्सचिवान्सर्वानब्रवीद्वाक्यकोविदः।।2.83.22।।

nirīkṣyānugatāṃ senāṃ tāṃ ca gaṅgāṃ śivodakām| bharatassacivānsarvānabravīdvākyakovidḥ||2.83.22||

Translation

अनुगताम् following, सेनाम् army, शिवोदकाम् having sacred waters, तां गङ्गां च that river Ganga, निरीक्षय having gazed at, वाक्यकोविदः proficient in speech, भरतः Bharata, सर्वान् all, सचिवान् to ministers, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

As he beheld the army following him and the river Ganga of sacred waters in front of him, Bharata who was proficient in speech said to his ministers:

AK-83-23Ayodhya Kanda 83.23

निवेशयत मे सैन्यमभिप्रायेण सर्वतः। विश्रान्ताः प्रतरिष्यामश्श्व इदानीमिमां नदीम्।।2.83.23।।

niveśayata me sainyamabhiprāyeṇa sarvatḥ| viśrāntāḥ pratariṣyāmaśśva idānīmimāṃ nadīm||2.83.23||

Translation

मे सैन्यम् my army, अभिप्रायेण according to their desires, सर्वतः all over, निवेशयत you may halt, इदानीम् now, विश्रान्ताः having taken rest, नदीम् river, श्वः tomorrow, प्रतरिष्यामः will cross.

Meaning

You may, according to your convenience, halt the army anywhere here and, after taking rest (for the night), we shall cross the river Ganga tomorrow.

AK-83-24Ayodhya Kanda 83.24

दातुं च तावदिच्छामि स्वर्गतस्य महीपतेः। और्ध्वदेहनिमित्तार्थमवतीर्योदकं नदीम्।।2.83.24।।

dātuṃ ca tāvadicchāmi svargatasya mahīpateḥ| aurdhvadehanimittārthamavatīryodakṃ nadīm||2.83.24||

Translation

नदीम् river, अवतीर्य descending, स्वर्गतस्य to the departed, महीपतेः king's, और्ध्वदेहनिमित्तार्थम् for the good of his life in the other world, उदकम् libations with water, दातुम् च to offer, इच्छामि तावत् I wish.

Meaning

Meanwhile, I shall get into this river and offer libations with water to the departed king for the good of his life in the other world.

AK-83-25Ayodhya Kanda 83.25

तस्यैवं ब्रुवतोऽमात्यास्तथेत्युक्त्वा समाहिताः। न्यवेशयंस्तां छन्देन स्वेन स्वेन पृथक्पृथक्।।2.83.25।।

tasyaivṃ bruvato'mātyāstathetyuktvā samāhitāḥ| nyaveśayṃstāṃ chandena svena svena pṛthakpṛthak||2.83.25||

Translation

तस्य his (Bharata's), एवम् in this way, ब्रुवतः while saying, अमात्याः ministers, तथेति 'be it so', उक्त्वा saying, समाहिताः with composed minds, ताम् they, स्वेन स्वेन each of their, छन्देन with pleasure, पृथक् पृथक् separately न्यवेशयन् rested.

Meaning

While he (Bharata's) was speaking this way, all the ministers assented by saying 'Be it so' and made arrangement for their troops to rest separately according to their pleasure.

AK-83-26Ayodhya Kanda 83.26

निवेश्य गङ्गामनु तां महानदीं चमूं विधानैः परिबर्हशोभिनीम्। उवास रामस्य तदा महात्मनो विचिन्तयानो भरतो निवर्तनम्।।2.83.26।।

niveśya gaṅgāmanu tāṃ mahānadīṃ camūṃ vidhānaiḥ paribarhaśobhinīm| uvāsa rāmasya tadā mahātmano vicintayāno bharato nivartanam||2.83.26||

Translation

भरतः Bharata, परिबर्हशोभिनीम् looking splendid with their royal insignia, चमूम् army, ताम् that, महानदीम् mighty river, गङ्गाम् अनु following Ganga, विधानैः with adequate arrangements, निवेश्य encamping, तदा then, महात्मनः magnanimous, रामस्य Rama's, निवर्तनम् to bring back, विचिन्तयानः pondering, उवास stayed.

Meaning

The army encamped by Bharata looked splendid with royal insigaia. After making necessary arrangements for the army on the bank of the mighty river Ganga and pondering over the means of bringing back the magnanimous Rama, Bharata stayed. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे त्र्यशीतितमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the eightythird sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
