AK-40-1Ayodhya Kanda 40.1

अथ रामश्च सीता च लक्ष्मणश्च कृताञ्जलिः। उपसङ्गृह्य राजानं चक्रुर्दीना: प्रदक्षिणम्।।2.40.1।।

atha rāmaśca sītā ca lakṣmaṇaśca kṛtāñjaliḥ| upasaṅgṛhya rājānṃ cakrurdīnā: pradakṣiṇam||2.40.1||

Translation

अथ thereafter, कृताज्ञलिः folded hands, रामश्च Rama also, सीता च Sita also, लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana also, राजानम् king, उपसङ्गृह्य holding, दीनाः forlom, प्रदक्षिणं चक्रुः circumambulated him.

Meaning

Thereafter, Sita, Rama and Lakshmana with folded palms in a forlom state touched (the feet of) the king and circumambulated him.

AK-40-2Ayodhya Kanda 40.2

तं चापि समनुज्ञाप्य धर्मज्ञस्सीतया सह। राघव श्शोकसम्मूढो जननीमभ्यवादयत्।।2.40.2।।

tṃ cāpi samanujñāpya dharmajñassītayā saha| rāghava śśokasammūḍho jananīmabhyavādayat||2.40.2||

Translation

धर्मज्ञः knower of duty, राघवः Rama, सीतया सह along with Sita, तम् (to him), समनुज्ञाप्य after taking leave of, शोकसम्मूढः griefstricken, जननीम् to mother, अभ्यवादयत् paid obeisance.

Meaning

Taking leave of Dasaratha, the righteous descendant of the Raghus (Rama) along with Sita paid obeisance to his mother Kausalya who was afflicted with deep grief.

AK-40-3Ayodhya Kanda 40.3

अअन्वक्षं लक्ष्मणो भ्रातुः कौशल्यामभ्यवादयत्। अथ मातु स्सुमित्राया जग्राह चरणौ पुनः।।2.40.3।।

aanvakṣṃ lakṣmaṇo bhrātuḥ kauśalyāmabhyavādayat| atha mātu ssumitrāyā jagrāha caraṇau punḥ||2.40.3||

Translation

लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, भ्रातुः to his brother, अन्वक्षम् following immediately, कौशल्याम् of Kausalya, अभ्यवादयत् paid obeisance, अथ thereafter, मातुः of his mother, सुमित्रायाः Sumitra's, चरणौ feet, पुनः again, जग्राह held.

Meaning

Immediately following Rama, his brother, Lakshmana also paid obeisance to Kausalya and, thereafter, held the feet of his own mother Sumitra.

AK-40-4Ayodhya Kanda 40.4

तं वन्दमानं रुदती माता सौमित्रिमब्रवीत्। हितकामा महाबाहुं मूध्नर्युपाघ्राय लक्ष्मणम्।।2.40.4।।

tṃ vandamānṃ rudatī mātā saumitrimabravīt| hitakāmā mahābāhuṃ mūdhnaryupāghrāya lakṣmaṇam||2.40.4||

Translation

माता mother, वन्दमानम् who was paying homage, सौमित्रिम् her son, महाबाहुम् mightyarmed, लक्ष्मणम् of Lakshmana, मूर्ध्नि on his forehead, उपाघ्राय having smelt, रुदती wailing, हितकामा wellwisher, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

While the mightyarmed Lakshmana paid her homage, Sumitra wailed, kissed him on his forehead, wished him well and said:

AK-40-5Ayodhya Kanda 40.5

सृष्टस्त्वं वनवासाय स्वनुरक्तस्सुहृज्जने। रामे प्रमादं मा कार्षीः पुत्र भ्रातरि गच्छति।।2.40.5।।

sṛṣṭastvṃ vanavāsāya svanuraktassuhṛjjane| rāme pramādṃ mā kārṣīḥ putra bhrātari gacchati||2.40.5||

Translation

पुत्र O son, सुहृज्जने in beloved ones, स्वनुरक्तः deeply attached, वनवासाय to dwell in the forest, सृष्टः born , गच्छति leaving for the forest, भ्रातरि with regard to your brother, रामे of Rama, प्रमादम् inattention, मा कार्षीः never do.

Meaning

Although deeply attached to your beloved ones, O Son, you are born to dwell in the forest. Never be inattentive towards your brother Rama who is on his way (to the forest).

AK-40-6Ayodhya Kanda 40.6

व्यसनी वा समृद्धो वा गतिरेष तवानघ। एष लोके सतां धर्मो यज्ज्येष्ठवशगो भवेत्।।2.40.6।।

vyasanī vā samṛddho vā gatireṣa tavānagha| eṣa loke satāṃ dharmo yajjyeṣṭhavaśago bhavet||2.40.6||

Translation

अनघ O sinless one, व्यसनी वा in adversity, समृद्धो वा or in prosperity, एषः this one, तव your, गतिः is refuge, ज्येष्ठवशगः following the eldest brother, भवेत् इति यत् if it happens, एषः this, लोके in this world, सताम् of virtuous men, धर्मः is the duty.

Meaning

Rama is your refuge in times of adversity or prosperity, O sinless one To be obedient to the eldest (brother) is the duty of virtuous men in this world.

AK-40-7Ayodhya Kanda 40.7

इदं हि वृत्तमुचितं कुलस्यास्य सनातनम्। दानं दीक्षा च यज्ञेषु तनुत्यागो मृधेषु च।।2.40.7।।

idṃ hi vṛttamucitṃ kulasyāsya sanātanam| dānṃ dīkṣā ca yajñeṣu tanutyāgo mṛdheṣu ca||2.40.7||

Translation

दानम् charity, यज्ञेषु in sacrifices, दीक्षा च initiation, मृधेषु in battles, तनुत्यागः च giving one's body, इदम् this one, अस्य कुलस्य of this race, उचितम् befitting, सनातनम् ancient, वृत्तं हि is the tradition.

Meaning

Charity, initiation at sacrifices and yielding life in battles are the befitting ancient traditions prevailing in your race.

AK-40-8Ayodhya Kanda 40.8

लक्ष्मणं त्वेवमुक्त्वा सा संसिद्धं प्रियराघवम्। सुमित्रा गच्छ गच्छेति पुनः पुनरुवाच तम्।।2.40.8।।

lakṣmaṇṃ tvevamuktvā sā sṃsiddhṃ priyarāghavam| sumitrā gaccha gaccheti punḥ punaruvāca tam||2.40.8||

Translation

सा सुमित्रा that Sumitra, प्रियराघवम् to beloved Rama, संसिद्धम् fully prepared, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, एवम् thus, उक्त्वा having said, गच्छ गच्छ इति exclaiming 'go, go', तम् to him, पुनः पुनः again and again, उवाच said.

Meaning

Having said this to Lakshmana Sumitra again and again said to her beloved Rama, who was fully prepared, 'Go, go'.

AK-40-9Ayodhya Kanda 40.9

रामं दशरथं विद्धि मां विद्धि जनकात्मजाम्। अयोध्यामटवीं विध्दि गच्छ तात यथासुखम्।।2.40.9।।

rāmṃ daśarathṃ viddhi māṃ viddhi janakātmajām| ayodhyāmaṭavīṃ vidhdi gaccha tāta yathāsukham||2.40.9||

Translation

रामम् to Rama, दशरथम् as Dasaratha, विद्धि know, जनकात्मजाम् Sita, माम् as me, विद्धि know, अटवीम् forest, अयोध्याम् as Ayodhya, विद्धि know, तात child, यथासुखम् in peace, गच्छ go.

Meaning

(To Lakshmana she said) Regard Rama as Dasaratha, Sita as me and the forest as Ayodhya. My child, go in peace.

AK-40-10Ayodhya Kanda 40.10

ततः सुमन्त्रः काकुत्स्थं प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत्। विनीतो विनयज्ञश्च मातलिर्वासवं यथा।।2.40.10।।

tatḥ sumantrḥ kākutsthṃ prāñjalirvākyamabravīt| vinīto vinayajñaśca mātalirvāsavṃ yathā||2.40.10||

Translation

ततः then, विनीतः humble, विनयज्ञश्च knower of politeness, सुमन्त्रः Sumantra, प्राञ्जलिः with folded palms, मातलिः Matali, वासवं यथा as Indra, काकुत्स्थम् to the scion of the Kakutstha race, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Then Sumantra who knows the ways of politeness and humility spoke to Rama, with folded hands as Matali did to Indra.

AK-40-11Ayodhya Kanda 40.11

ररथमारोह भद्रं ते राजपुत्र महायशः। क्षिप्रं त्वां प्रापयिष्यामि यत्र मां राम वक्ष्यसि।।2.40.11।।

rarathamāroha bhadrṃ te rājaputra mahāyaśḥ| kṣiprṃ tvāṃ prāpayiṣyāmi yatra māṃ rāma vakṣyasi||2.40.11||

Translation

राजपुत्र O Prince, महायशः O illustrious one, रथं chariot, आरोह mount, ते to you, भद्रम् wish you well, यत्र whereever, वक्ष्यसि you guide (one), त्वाम् you, क्षिप्रम् speedily, प्रापयिष्यामि I will take.

Meaning

O Illustrious prince, wish you well Mount the chariot. I shall convey you speedily whereever you want.

AK-40-12Ayodhya Kanda 40.12

चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि वस्तव्यानि वने त्वया। तान्युपक्रमितव्यानि यानि देव्यासि चोदितः।।2.40.12।।

caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi vastavyāni vane tvayā| tānyupakramitavyāni yāni devyāsi coditḥ||2.40.12||

Translation

चतुर्दश fourteen, वर्षाणि years, त्वया by you, वने in the forest, वस्तव्यानिव you will dwell, यानि those, देव्या by queen Kaikeyi, चोदितः असि you have been directed, तानि those, उपक्रमितव्यानि should be commenced.

Meaning

You have been directed by Kaikeyi to live in the forest for fourteen years. Accordingly you must now commence counting those years as directed.

AK-40-13Ayodhya Kanda 40.13

तं रथं सूर्यसङ्काशं सीता हृष्टेन चेतसा। आरुरोह वरारोहा कृत्वालङ्कारमात्मनः।।2.40.13।।

tṃ rathṃ sūryasaṅkāśṃ sītā hṛṣṭena cetasā| āruroha varārohā kṛtvālaṅkāramātmanḥ||2.40.13||

Translation

वरारोहा lovely limbs, सीता Sita, आत्मनः her person, अलङ्कारम् decoration, कृत्वा having made, हृष्टेन with pleased, चेतसा mind, सूर्यसङ्काशम् resembling the Sun, तं रथम् that chariot, आरुरोह boarded.

Meaning

Sita of lovely limbs decorated herself and with a cheerful mind boarded the chariot which was shining like the Sun.

AK-40-14Ayodhya Kanda 40.14

अथो ज्वलनसङ्काशं चामीकरविभूषितम्। तमारुरुहतुस्तूर्णं भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ।।2.40.14।।

atho jvalanasaṅkāśṃ cāmīkaravibhūṣitam| tamāruruhatustūrṇṃ bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau||2.40.14||

Translation

अथ thereafter, भ्रातरौ both the brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, उज्वलनसङ्काशम् appearing like blazing fire, चामीकरविभूषितम् decorated with gold, तम् the chariot, तूर्णम् immediately, आरुरुहतुः both ascended.

Meaning

Thereafter, Rama and Lakshmana also boarded that chariot decorated with gold and shining like blazing fire.

AK-40-15Ayodhya Kanda 40.15

वनवासं हि संख्याय वासांस्याभरणानि च। भर्तारमनुगच्छन्त्यै सीतायै श्वशुरो ददौ।।2.40.15।।

vanavāsṃ hi sṃkhyāya vāsāṃsyābharaṇāni ca| bhartāramanugacchantyai sītāyai śvaśuro dadau||2.40.15||

Translation

श्वशुरः fatherinlaw (Dasaratha), भर्तारम् to the husband, अनुगच्छन्त्यै following, सीतायै to Sita, वनवासम् going to dwell in the forest, संख्याय having counted, वासांसि clothes, आभरणानि च ornamets, ददौ gave.

Meaning

Fatherinlaw (Dasaratha) gave clothes and ornaments on the assessment of the number of years Sita was going to spend in the forest with her husband.

AK-40-16-17Ayodhya Kanda 40.16–17 (युग्मम्)

तथैवायुधजालानि भ्रातृभ्यां कवचानि च। रथोपस्थे प्रतिन्यस्य सचर्म कठिनं च तत्।।2.40.16।। सीतातृतीयानारूढान् दृष्ट्वा दृष्टमचोदयत्। सुमन्त्रस्सम्मतानश्वान् वायुवेगसमान्जवे।।2.40.17।।

tathaivāyudhajālāni bhrātṛbhyāṃ kavacāni ca| rathopasthe pratinyasya sacarma kaṭhinṃ ca tat||2.40.16|| sītātṛtīyānārūḍhān dṛṣṭvā dṛṣṭamacodayat| sumantrassammatānaśvān vāyuvegasamānjave||2.40.17||

Translation

तथैव similarly, भ्रातृभ्याम् for brothers, आयुधजालानि multitude of weapons, कवचानि armours, सचर्म along with shield, तत् कठिनं च protective leather covering the hand, रथोपस्थे in the centre of the chariot, प्रतिन्यस्य placing, सुमन्त्रः Sumantra, सीतातृतीयान् Rama and Lakshmana with Sita as third person, आरूढान् ascended, दृष्ट्वा having seen, सम्मतान् honoured, जवे in speed, वायुवेग समान् like the speed of the wind, अश्वान् horses, धृष्टम् briskly, अचोदयत् drove them.

Meaning

So also Dasaratha secured a multitude of weapons, shields and protective leathercoverings for hands and placed them at the centre of the chariot, for use by the brothers. When Sumantra ensured that Sita, Rama and Lakshmana boarded the chariot, he briskly hastened the horses which were as speedy as the wind.

AK-40-18Ayodhya Kanda 40.18

प्रतियाते महारण्यं चिररात्राय राघवे। बभूव नगरे मूर्छा बलमूर्छा जनस्य च।।2.40.18।।

pratiyāte mahāraṇyṃ cirarātrāya rāghave| babhūva nagare mūrchā balamūrchā janasya ca||2.40.18||

Translation

राघवे Rama, चिररात्राय for a long period, महारण्यम् to the great forest, प्रतियाते having set out, नगरे in the city, मूर्छा बभूव was deprived of senses, जनस्य for men, बलमूर्छा च were deprived of their strength.

Meaning

Having seen Rama set out for the great forest for a long period, the city was stilled and men were enervated.

AK-40-19Ayodhya Kanda 40.19

तत्समाकुलसम्भ्रान्तं मत्तसङ्कुपितद्विपम्। हयशिञ्जितनिर्घोषं पुरमासीन्महास्वनम्।।2.40.19।।

tatsamākulasambhrāntṃ mattasaṅkupitadvipam| hayaśiñjitanirghoṣṃ puramāsīnmahāsvanam||2.40.19||

Translation

तत् पुरम् that city, मत्तसङ्कुपितद्विपम् with elephants intoxicated and provoked (by sounds), हयशिञ्जितनिर्घोषम् the tinkling of bells and the neighing of the horses, महास्वनम् mighty roar, आकुलसम्भ्रान्तम् आसीत् became flurried and distressed.

Meaning

The city was distressed and flurried by the intoxicated elephants, provoked by the mighty sound of the tinkling of bells and the neighing of the horses.

AK-40-20Ayodhya Kanda 40.20

तत स्सबालवृद्धा सा पुरी परमपीडिता। राममेवाभिदुद्राव घर्मार्ता सलिलं यथा।।2.40.20।।

tata ssabālavṛddhā sā purī paramapīḍitā| rāmamevābhidudrāva gharmārtā salilṃ yathā||2.40.20||

Translation

ततः thereafter, बालवृद्धा including young and old, सा पुरी that city, परमपीडिता extremely afflicted, घर्मार्तः oppressed with heat, सलिलं यथा like water, रामम् एव towards Rama only, अभिदुद्राव ran.

Meaning

Thereafter the extremely afflicted people of the city, including young and old alike, ran towards Rama like men oppressed with heat running for water.

AK-40-21Ayodhya Kanda 40.21

पार्श्वतः पृष्ठतश्चापि लम्बमानास्तदुन्मुखाः। बाष्पपूर्णमुखास्सर्वे तमूचुर्भृशनिस्वनाः।।2.40.21।।

pārśvatḥ pṛṣṭhataścāpi lambamānāstadunmukhāḥ| bāṣpapūrṇamukhāssarve tamūcurbhṛśanisvanāḥ||2.40.21||

Translation

सर्वे all, पार्श्वतः by his side, पृष्ठतश्चैव behind, लम्बमानाः hanging upon, तदुन्मुखाः facing him, बाष्पपूर्णमुखाः faces covered with tears, भृशनिस्वनाः heaving deeply, तम् addressing that Sumantra, ऊचुः said.

Meaning

All the people hanging from the chariot from behind and by the sides, heaving deeply, their faces covered with tears, thus addressed to Sumantra:

AK-40-22Ayodhya Kanda 40.22

संयच्छ वाजिनां रश्मीन् सूत याहि शनैश्शनैः। मुखं द्रक्ष्याम रामस्य दुर्दर्शं नो भविष्यति।।2.40.22।।

sṃyaccha vājināṃ raśmīn sūta yāhi śanaiśśanaiḥ| mukhṃ drakṣyāma rāmasya durdarśṃ no bhaviṣyati||2.40.22||

Translation

सूत O charioteer, वाजिनाम् horses, रश्मीन् reins, संयच्छ control, शनैः शनैः slowly, slowly, याहि go, रामस्य Rama's, मुखम् face, द्रक्ष्यामः we will see, नः for us, दुर्दर्शम् difficult to see, भविष्यति will become.

Meaning

O charioteer, control the reins of the horses and go slow so that we may look at the face of Rama, for soon we will not be able to see him.

AK-40-23Ayodhya Kanda 40.23

आयसं हृदयं नूनं राममातुरसंशयम्। यद्देवगर्भप्रतिमे वनं याति न भिद्यते।।2.40.23।।

āyasṃ hṛdayṃ nūnṃ rāmamāturasṃśayam| yaddevagarbhapratime vanṃ yāti na bhidyate||2.40.23||

Translation

देवगर्भप्रतिमे resembling the offspring of gods, वनम् to the forest, याति while going, यत् for what reason, न भिद्यते does not break, नूनम् certainly, राममातुः of the mother of Rama (Kausalya's), हृदयम् heart, आयसम् is made of iron, असंशयम् no doubt.

Meaning

Alas, the heart of Kausalya whose son, Rama, resembles the offspring of the gods, does not break even though he is going to the forest Undoubtedly it must be made of iron.

AK-40-24Ayodhya Kanda 40.24

कृतकृत्या हि वैदेही छायेवानुगता पतिम्। न जहाति रता धर्मे मेरुमर्कप्रभा यथा।।2.40.24।।

kṛtakṛtyā hi vaidehī chāyevānugatā patim| na jahāti ratā dharme merumarkaprabhā yathā||2.40.24||

Translation

धर्मे in duty, रता attached, छायेव like shadow, अनुगता following, वैदेहि Sita, अर्कप्रभा sunlight, मेरुम् यथा like mount Meru, पतिम् her husband, न जहाति does not leave, कृतकृत्या हि accomplished her purpose.

Meaning

Sita, deeply attached to her duty, and with her desire fulfilled is following her husband like a shadow just as the sunlight which never leaves mount Meru.

AK-40-25Ayodhya Kanda 40.25

अहो लक्ष्मण सिद्धार्थ स्सततं प्रियवादिनम्। भ्रातरं देवसङ्काशं यस्त्वं परिचरिष्यसि।।2.40.25।।

aho lakṣmaṇa siddhārtha ssatatṃ priyavādinam| bhrātarṃ devasaṅkāśṃ yastvṃ paricariṣyasi||2.40.25||

Translation

लक्ष्मण O Lakshmana, यः त्वम् such as you, प्रियवादिनम् who speaks pleasant words, देवसङ्काशम् godlike, भ्रातरम् to brother, सततम् always, परिचरिष्यसि attend, सिद्धार्थः fulfilled the purpose, अहो oh.

Meaning

With your desires fulfilled, O Lakshmana, you will attend to your godlike brother who always speaks pleasant words.

AK-40-26Ayodhya Kanda 40.26

महत्येषा हि ते सिध्दिरेष चाभ्युदयो महान्। एष स्वर्गस्य मार्गश्च यदेनमनुगच्छसि।।2.40.26।।

mahatyeṣā hi te sidhdireṣa cābhyudayo mahān| eṣa svargasya mārgaśca yadenamanugacchasi||2.40.26||

Translation

एनम् this Rama, अनुगच्छसि (इति) यत् the fact that you are following him, एषा that one, ते for you, महती great, सिध्दि: achievement, एषः this, महान् great, अभ्युदयः prosperity, एषः this one, स्वर्गस्य to heaven, मार्गश्च way.

Meaning

The very fact that you are following Rama is a great achievement and a great fortune for you. This, in fact, is the way to heaven.

AK-40-27Ayodhya Kanda 40.27

एवं वदन्तस्ते सोढुं न शेकुर्बाष्पमागतम्। नरास्तमनुगच्छन्तः प्रियमिक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम्।।2.40.27।।

evṃ vadantaste soḍhuṃ na śekurbāṣpamāgatam| narāstamanugacchantḥ priyamikṣvākunandanam||2.40.27||

Translation

एवम् thus, वदन्तः speaking, इक्ष्वाकुनन्दनम् delight of Ikshawaku dynasty, प्रियम् beloved, तम् that Rama, अनुगच्छन्तः following, ते नराः those people, आगतम् having arrived, बाष्पम् tears, सोढुम् to bear, न शेकुः were not able.

Meaning

Speaking thus, the people following their beloved Rama, the delight of the Ikshvaku dynasty, were not able to bear (restrain) the tears flowing from their eyes.

AK-40-28Ayodhya Kanda 40.28

अथ राजा वृत स्त्रीभिर्दीनाभिर्दीनचेतनः। निर्जगाम प्रियं पुत्रं द्रक्ष्यामीति ब्रुवन् गृहात्।।2.40.28।।

atha rājā vṛta strībhirdīnābhirdīnacetanḥ| nirjagāma priyṃ putrṃ drakṣyāmīti bruvan gṛhāt||2.40.28||

Translation

अथ then, दीनचेतनः in desolation, राजा king, प्रियम् beloved, पुत्रम् son, द्रक्ष्यामीति I wish to see him, ब्रुवन् saying, दीनाभिः distressed, स्त्रीभिः by ladies, वृतः surrounded, गृहात् from the palace, निर्जगाम emerged.

Meaning

I wish to see my beloved son said the king with a sense of desolation and emerged, surrounded by forlorn women, from the palace.

AK-40-29Ayodhya Kanda 40.29

शुश्रुवे चाग्रतः स्त्रीणां रुदन्तीनां महास्वनः। यथा नादः करेणूनां बद्धे महति कुञ्जरे।।2.40.29।।

śuśruve cāgratḥ strīṇāṃ rudantīnāṃ mahāsvanḥ| yathā nādḥ kareṇūnāṃ baddhe mahati kuñjare||2.40.29||

Translation

अग्रतः in front of, रुदन्तीनाम् crying, स्त्रीणाम् of women, महास्वनः loud sound, महति when great, कुञ्जरे elephant, बद्धे when fastened, करेणूनाम् of female elephants, नादः यथा like a sound, शुश्रुवे heard.

Meaning

He heard the women crying loudly in front like wailings of cowelephants when their bull elephant is captured.

AK-40-30Ayodhya Kanda 40.30

पिता हि राजा काकुत्स्थः श्रीमान् सन्नस्तदाऽभवत्। परिपूर्णः शशी काले ग्रहेणोपप्लुतो यथा।।2.40.30।।

pitā hi rājā kākutsthḥ śrīmān sannastadā'bhavat| paripūrṇḥ śaśī kāle graheṇopapluto yathā||2.40.30||

Translation

श्रीमान् one of great prosperity, काकुत्स्थ: born in the race of Kakutstha (Dasaratha), पिता father, राजा king, तदा then, काले at that time, ग्रहेण by Rahu, उपप्लुतः eclipsed, पूर्णशशी यथा like the full Moon, सन्नः अभवत् was shrunk.

Meaning

AK-40-31Ayodhya Kanda 40.31

स च श्रीमानचिन्त्यात्मा रामो दशरथात्मजः। सूतं सञ्चोदयामास त्वरितं वाह्यतामिति।।2.40.31।।

sa ca śrīmānacintyātmā rāmo daśarathātmajḥ| sūtṃ sañcodayāmāsa tvaritṃ vāhyatāmiti||2.40.31||

Translation

श्रीमान् glorious one, अचिन्त्यात्मा unimaginable form, सः दशरथात्मजः that son of Dasaratha, रामः Rama, त्वरितम् fast, वाह्यताम् इति drive, सूतम् charioteer, सञ्चोदयामास exhorted.

Meaning

The son of Dasaratha, glorious Rama of inconceivable courage, exhorted the charioteer to drive the chariot fast.

AK-40-32Ayodhya Kanda 40.32

रामो याहीति सूतं तं तिष्ठेति स जनस्तदा। उभयं नाशकत्सूतः कर्तुमध्वनि चोदितः।।2.40.32।।

rāmo yāhīti sūtṃ tṃ tiṣṭheti sa janastadā| ubhayṃ nāśakatsūtḥ kartumadhvani coditḥ||2.40.32||

Translation

तदा then, रामः Rama, याहि इति saying 'drive on', जनः citizens, तिष्ठेति 'stay, stay', तं सूतम् to the charioteer, चोदितः urged, सूतः that charioteer, अध्वनि on the way, उभयम् both the acts, कर्तुम् to do, नाशकत् was unable.

Meaning

Urged by Rama to drive fast on the one hand and by the citizens to stay, on the other, the charioteer could do neither on the way.

AK-40-33Ayodhya Kanda 40.33

निर्गच्छति महाबाहौ रामे पौरजनाश्रुभिः। पतितैरभ्यवहितं प्रशशाम महीरजः।।2.40.33।।

nirgacchati mahābāhau rāme paurajanāśrubhiḥ| patitairabhyavahitṃ praśaśāma mahīrajḥ||2.40.33||

Translation

महाबाहौ mightyarmed, रामे Rama, निर्गच्छति going away, अभ्यवहितम् raised, महीरजः dust of the earth, पतितैः by the fallen, पौरजनाश्रुभिः with the tears of the citizens, प्रशशाम subsided.

Meaning

As the mightyarmed Rama was going away, the dust raised from the earth subsided with the tears falling from the citizens' (eyes).

AK-40-34Ayodhya Kanda 40.34

रुदिताश्रुपरिद्यूनं हाहाकृतमचेतनम्। प्रयाणे राघवस्यासीत्पुरं परमपीडितम्।।2.40.34।।

ruditāśruparidyūnṃ hāhākṛtamacetanam| prayāṇe rāghavasyāsītpurṃ paramapīḍitam||2.40.34||

Translation

राघवस्य Rama's, प्रयाणे at the time of departure, पुरम् the city, रुदिताश्रुपरिद्यूनम् drenched with tears from weeping, हाहाकृतम् 'Alas, Alas', अचेतनम् insensate, परम पीडितम् आसीत् became tormented.

Meaning

At the time of Rama's departure, the insensate city was drenched with tears of the deeply afflicted people crying, 'Alas, Alas'.

AK-40-35Ayodhya Kanda 40.35

सुस्राव नयनैः स्त्रीणामस्रमायाससम्भवम्। मीनसङ्क्षोभचलितै स्सलिलं पङ्कजैरिव।।2.40.35।।

susrāva nayanaiḥ strīṇāmasramāyāsasambhavam| mīnasaṅkṣobhacalitai ssalilṃ paṅkajairiva||2.40.35||

Translation

स्त्रीणाम् women's, नयनैः with (from) eyes, आयाससम्भवम् born of anguish, अस्रम् tears, मीनसङ्क्षोभ चलितैः shaken by the movements of fish, पङ्कजैः by lotuses, सलिलमिव like waterdrops, सुस्राव fell.

Meaning

Tears born of anguish fell from the eyes of women just as waterdrops fall from lotuses shaken by the movements of fishes.

AK-40-36Ayodhya Kanda 40.36

दृष्ट्वा तु नृपति श्श्रीमानेकचित्तगतं पुरम्। निपपातैव दुःखेन हतमूल इव द्रुमः।।2.40.36।।

dṛṣṭvā tu nṛpati śśrīmānekacittagatṃ puram| nipapātaiva duḥkhena hatamūla iva drumḥ||2.40.36||

Translation

श्रीमान् prosperous, नृपतिः king, एकचित्तगतम् absorbed in the same thought, पुरम् the city, दृष्ट्वा having seen, दुःखेन with grief, हतमूलः with roots severed, द्रुमः इव like tree, निपपातैव fell down.

Meaning

Having seen the city (people) absorbed in one single thought, the prosperous king, griefstricken, fell down on the ground like a tree severed at its root.

AK-40-37Ayodhya Kanda 40.37

ततो हलहलाशब्दो जज्ञे रामस्य पृष्ठतः। नराणां प्रेक्ष्य राजानं सीदन्तं भृशदुःखितम्।।2.40.37।।

tato halahalāśabdo jajñe rāmasya pṛṣṭhatḥ| narāṇāṃ prekṣya rājānṃ sīdantṃ bhṛśaduḥkhitam||2.40.37||

Translation

ततः then, भृश दुःखितम् intensely grieved, सीदन्तम् enfeebled, राजानम् king, प्रेक्ष्य having seen, नराणाम् men's, हलहलाशब्दः a tumultous roar, रामस्य Rama's, पृष्ठतः behind, जज्ञे emanated.

Meaning

When the people saw the king enfeebled by deep grief, they raised an uproar behind Rama's (chariot).

AK-40-38Ayodhya Kanda 40.38

हा रामेति जनाः केचिद्राममातेति चापरे। अन्तःपुरं समृद्धं च क्रोशन्तः पर्यदेवयन्।।2.40.38।।

hā rāmeti janāḥ kecidrāmamāteti cāpare| antḥpurṃ samṛddhṃ ca krośantḥ paryadevayan||2.40.38||

Translation

केचित् some, जनाः people, हा रामेति O Rama, अपरे some others, राममातेति O mother of Rama, क्रोशन्तः while crying, समृद्धम् loudly, अन्तःपुरं च inner apartment, पर्यदेवयन् made them weep.

Meaning

Some among them wailed 'Oh Rama', while some others cried 'Oh mother of Rama' By crying loudly, they made the women in the inner apartment cry too.

AK-40-39Ayodhya Kanda 40.39

अन्वीक्षमाणो रामस्तु विषण्णं भ्रान्तचेतसम्। राजानं मातरं चैव ददर्शानुगतौ पथि।।2.40.39।।

anvīkṣamāṇo rāmastu viṣaṇṇṃ bhrāntacetasam| rājānṃ mātarṃ caiva dadarśānugatau pathi||2.40.39||

Translation

रामस्तु Rama, अन्वीक्षमाणः glanced back, विषण्णम् dejected, भ्रान्तचेतसम् with a disturbed mind, राजानम् king, मातरं चैव mother also, पथि on the highway, अनुगतौ following, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

When Rama glanced back, he saw his mother and father trailing behind him on the highway, with an agitated and dejected mind.

AK-40-40Ayodhya Kanda 40.40

स बद्ध इव पाशेन किशोरो मातरं यथा। धर्मपाशेन सङ्क्षिप्तः प्रकाशं नाभ्युदैक्षत।।2.40.40।।

sa baddha iva pāśena kiśoro mātarṃ yathā| dharmapāśena saṅkṣiptḥ prakāśṃ nābhyudaikṣata||2.40.40||

Translation

पाशेन बद्धः fastened by cord, किशोरः इव like a foal, सः Rama, धर्मपाशेन by bonds of duty, सङ्क्षिप्तः restrained, मातरं यथा like mother, प्रकाशम् clearly, नाभ्युदैक्षत did not see.

Meaning

Like a fastened foal cannot see its mother, Rama restrained by bonds of duty could not see his parents clearly.

AK-40-41Ayodhya Kanda 40.41

पदातिनौ च यानार्हावदुःखार्हौ सुखोचितौ। दृष्ट्वा सञ्चोदयामास शीघ्रं याहीति सारथिम्।।2.40.41।।

padātinau ca yānārhāvaduḥkhārhau sukhocitau| dṛṣṭvā sañcodayāmāsa śīghrṃ yāhīti sārathim||2.40.41||

Translation

यानार्हौ worthy of going on chariot, पदातिनौ (now) going on foot, सुखोचितौ accustomed to comforts, अदु:खार्हौ unworthy of experiencing sorrow, दृष्ट्वा having seen, शीघ्रम् swiftly, याहि इति 'go' thus, सारथिम् of charioteer, सञ्चोदयामास urged.

Meaning

Seeing his parents, who were worthy of riding a chariot now going on foot, who were accustomed to comforts and did not deserve any suffering, Rama urged his charioteer to drive fast.

AK-40-42Ayodhya Kanda 40.42

न हि तत्पुरुषव्याघ्रो दुःखदं दर्शनं पितुः। मातुश्च सहितुं शक्तस्तोत्रार्दित इव द्विपः।।2.40.42।।

na hi tatpuruṣavyāghro duḥkhadṃ darśanṃ pituḥ| mātuśca sahituṃ śaktastotrārdita iva dvipḥ||2.40.42||

Translation

पुरुषव्याघ्रः tiger (best) among men, तोत्रार्दितः tormented by the goads, द्विपः इव like an elephant, दुःखदम् causing agony, पितुः father's, मातुश्च mother's, तत् दर्शनम् that sight, सहितुम् to endure, न शक्तः हि was not able.

Meaning

Rama the best among men, could not, like an elephant tormented by the goad, endure that pitiful sight of his father and mother.

AK-40-43Ayodhya Kanda 40.43

प्रत्यगारमिवायान्ती वत्सला वत्सकारणात्। बद्धवत्सा यथा धेनू राममाताभ्यधावत।।2.40.43।।

pratyagāramivāyāntī vatsalā vatsakāraṇāt| baddhavatsā yathā dhenū rāmamātābhyadhāvata||2.40.43||

Translation

बद्धवत्सा fastened calf, वत्सला affectionate, अगारं प्रति towards the shed, आयन्ती coming, धेनुः इव like cow, वत्सकारणात् यथा for its calf, राममाता Rama's mother, अभ्यधावत ran behind.

Meaning

Rama's mother ran after the chariot, like an affectionate cow running towards the shed to join its fastened calf.

AK-40-44-45Ayodhya Kanda 40.44–45 (युग्मम्)

तथा रुदन्तीं कौसल्यां रथं तमनुधावतीम्। क्रोशन्तीं राम रामेति हा सीते लक्ष्मणेति च।।2.40.44।। रामलक्ष्मणसीतार्थं स्रवन्तीं वारि नेत्रजम्। असकृत्प्रैक्षत तदा नृत्यन्तीमिव मातरम्।।2.40.45।।

tathā rudantīṃ kausalyāṃ rathṃ tamanudhāvatīm| krośantīṃ rāma rāmeti hā sīte lakṣmaṇeti ca||2.40.44|| rāmalakṣmaṇasītārthṃ sravantīṃ vāri netrajam| asakṛtpraikṣata tadā nṛtyantīmiva mātaram||2.40.45||

Translation

(सः Rama), तथा thus, रुदन्तीम् weeping, राम रामेति O Rama, O Rama, हा सीते O Sita, लक्ष्मणेति च O Lakshmana, क्रोशन्तीम् crying, रामलक्ष्मणसीतार्थम् for Rama, Lakshmana and Sita, नेत्रजम् born of eyes, वारि tears, स्रवन्तीम् shedding, नृत्यन्तीम् इव like a dancer, मातरम् mother, तां कौशल्याम् that Kausalya, असकृत् repeatedly, प्रैक्षत saw.

Meaning

While Kausalya was weeping and running after the chariot, crying O 'Rama, O Sita, O Lakshmana, shedding tears for them, Rama repeatedly glanced at her who was twisting and bending as if in a dancing pose.

AK-40-46Ayodhya Kanda 40.46

तिष्ठेति राजा चुक्रोश याहि याहीति राघवः। सुमन्त्रस्य बभूवात्मा चक्रयोरिव चान्तरा।।2.40.46।।

tiṣṭheti rājā cukrośa yāhi yāhīti rāghavḥ| sumantrasya babhūvātmā cakrayoriva cāntarā||2.40.46||

Translation

राजा king, तिष्ठेति 'stay, stay', चुक्रोश cried, राघवः Rama, याहि इति 'go, go', सुमन्त्रस्य Sumantra's, आत्मा mind, चक्रयो: two wheels, अन्तरा इव like in between, बभूव became.

Meaning

The king cried, 'Stay, Stay', while Rama said 'Go on, Go on'. Sumantra's mind was caught as if in between two wheels.

AK-40-47Ayodhya Kanda 40.47

नाश्रौषमिति राजानमुपालब्धोऽपि वक्ष्यसि। चिरं दुःखस्य पापिष्ठमिति रामस्तमब्रवीत्।।2.40.47।।

nāśrauṣamiti rājānamupālabdho'pi vakṣyasi| cirṃ duḥkhasya pāpiṣṭhamiti rāmastamabravīt||2.40.47||

Translation

उपालब्धोऽपि even when reproached, नाश्रौषमिति 'I did not hear', राजानम् to the king, वक्ष्यसि you will tell, दुःखस्य agony, चिरम् for long time, पापिष्ठम् cannot be endured, इति thus, रामः Rama, तम् to him, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

When the king reproaches you for not stopping the chariot, you can say 'I could not hear'.Prolonging agony is sinful, said Rama to Sumantra.

AK-40-48Ayodhya Kanda 40.48

रामस्य स वचः कुर्वन्ननुज्ञाप्य च तं जनम्। व्रजतोऽपि हयान् शीघ्रं चोदयामास सारथिः।।2.40.48।।

rāmasya sa vacḥ kurvannanujñāpya ca tṃ janam| vrajato'pi hayān śīghrṃ codayāmāsa sārathiḥ||2.40.48||

Translation

स सारथिः charioteer, रामस्य Rama's, वचः words, कुर्वन् obeying, तम् जनम् that multitude of people, अनुज्ञाप्य having given permision (taking leave), व्रजतोऽपि even though moving, हयान् horses, शीघ्रम् with greater speed, चोदयामास hastened.

Meaning

Obeying the command of Rama and after taking leave of the people, Sumantra hastened the horses although they were galloping.

AK-40-49Ayodhya Kanda 40.49

न्यवर्तत जनो राज्ञो रामं कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम्। मनसाप्यश्रुवेगैश्च न न्यवर्तत मानुषम्।।2.40.49।।

nyavartata jano rājño rāmṃ kṛtvā pradakṣiṇam| manasāpyaśruvegaiśca na nyavartata mānuṣam||2.40.49||

Translation

राज्ञः king's, जनः people, रामम् of Rama, प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा circumanbulating him in imaginataion, न्यवर्तत returned, मानुषम् people, मनसा अपि even mentally, अश्रुवेगैश्च flow of their tears, न न्यवर्तत did not stop.

Meaning

The king's men returned, with Rama circumambulated (on the plane of their minds). But from their minds they could not hold back their tears (grief).

AK-40-50Ayodhya Kanda 40.50

यमिच्छेत्पुनरायान्तं नैनं दूरमनुव्रजेत्। इत्यमात्या महाराजमूचुर्दशरथं वचः।।2.40.50।।

yamicchetpunarāyāntṃ nainṃ dūramanuvrajet| ityamātyā mahārājamūcurdaśarathṃ vacḥ||2.40.50||

Translation

यम् whom, पुनः again, आयान्तम् returning, इच्छेत् desires, एनम् him, दूरम् for a long distance, न अनुव्रजेत् should not follow, इति thus, अमात्याः ministers, महाराजम् king, दशरथम् to Dasaratha, वचः words, ऊचुः said.

Meaning

We should not follow over a long distance those we wish to return, said the ministers to king Dasaratha.

AK-40-51Ayodhya Kanda 40.51

तेषां वचः सर्वगुणोपपन्नं प्रस्विन्नगात्रः प्रविषण्णरूपः। निशम्य राजा कृपणः सभार्यो व्यवस्थितस्तं सुतमीक्षमाणः।।2.40.51।।

teṣāṃ vacḥ sarvaguṇopapannṃ prasvinnagātrḥ praviṣaṇṇarūpḥ| niśamya rājā kṛpaṇḥ sabhāryo vyavasthitastṃ sutamīkṣamāṇḥ||2.40.51||

Translation

प्रस्विन्नगात्रः with a perspiring body, प्रविषण्णरूपः with a melancholic appearance, कृपणः overcome with grief, सभार्यः along with his wives, राजा the king, तेषाम् their, सर्वगुणोपपन्नम् endowed with every virtue, वचः words, निशम्य having heard, तं सुतम् that son, ईक्षमाणः while looking at, व्यवस्थितः stood there.

Meaning

Dasaratha and his wives, overcome with grief, heard their words steeped in virtue (wisdom). The king stood there with his perspiring body and melancholic appearance, fixing his gaze on his son. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे चत्वारिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fortieth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
