AK-15-1Ayodhya Kanda 15.1

ते तु तां रजनीमुष्य ब्राह्मणा वेदपारगाः। उपतस्थुरुपस्थानं सह राजपुरोहिताः।।2.15.1।।

te tu tāṃ rajanīmuṣya brāhmaṇā vedapāragāḥ| upatasthurupasthānṃ saha rājapurohitāḥ||2.15.1||

Translation

वेदपारगा: wellversed in the Vedas, ते those, ब्राम्हणा: brahmins, तां रजनीम् that night, उष्य after staying, सहराजपुरोहिता: along with royal priests, उपस्थानम् to the pavilion (for consecration ceremony), उपतस्थु: assembled.

Meaning

The brahmins wellversed in the Vedas stayed waiting all night and assembled at the pavilion (for the consecration ceremony) along with royal priests.

AK-15-2Ayodhya Kanda 15.2

अमात्या बलमुख्याश्च मुख्या ये निगमस्य च। राघवस्याभिषेकार्थे प्रियमाणास्तु संगताः।।2.15.2।।

amātyā balamukhyāśca mukhyā ye nigamasya ca| rāghavasyābhiṣekārthe priyamāṇāstu sṃgatāḥ||2.15.2||

Translation

अमात्या: ministers, बलमुख्याश्च army chiefs, ये निगमस्य मुख्याः chiefs of the merchants' associations, राघवस्य of Rama, अभिषेकार्थे for the consecration, प्रियमाणा: brimming with joy, संगता: assembled.

Meaning

For the consecration of the scion of the Raghu race (Rama), ministers, army chiefs and chiefs of merchants' associations assembled, brimming with joy.

AK-15-3Ayodhya Kanda 15.3

उदिते विमले सूर्ये पुष्ये चाभ्यागतेऽहनि। लग्ने कर्कटके प्राप्ते जन्म रामस्य च स्थिते।।2.15.3।। अभिषेकाय रामस्य द्विजेन्द्रैरुपकल्पितम्।

udite vimale sūrye puṣye cābhyāgate'hani| lagne karkaṭake prāpte janma rāmasya ca sthite||2.15.3|| abhiṣekāya rāmasya dvijendrairupakalpitam|

Translation

विमले bright, सूर्ये Sun, उदिते having arisen, अहनि during day , पुष्ये च when Pushya star, अभ्यागते was ascendent, रामस्य Rama's, जन्म स्थिते constellation at the time of birth, कर्कटकलग्ने ascension of karkataka lagna, प्राप्ते had come, रामस्य Rama's, अभिषेकाय for the consecration, द्विजेन्द्रै: by the best of brahmins, उपकल्पितम् was decided.

Meaning

The best of brahmins had decided to perform the consecration ceremony after the bright Sun appeared in the sky when the Pushya star approached the karkataka lagna, which was the constellation at the time of Rama's birth.

AK-15-4Ayodhya Kanda 15.4

काञ्चना जलकुम्भाश्च भद्रपीठं स्वलंकृतम्।।2.15,4।। रथः च सम्यगास्तीर्णो भास्वता व्याघ्रचर्मणा।

kāñcanā jalakumbhāśca bhadrapīṭhṃ svalṃkṛtam||2.15,4|| rathḥ ca samyagāstīrṇo bhāsvatā vyāghracarmaṇā|

Translation

काञ्चना: golden, जलकुम्भाश्च jars filled with water, स्वलंकृतम् welldecorated, भद्रपीठम् throne, भास्वता by a bright, व्याघ्रचर्मणा by the tiger skin, सम्यक् properly, आस्तीर्ण: spread, रथः च chariot also, (भान्ति are shining.)

Meaning

Golden jars filled with water, the welldecorated throne and a chariot spread well with bright tigerskin (were kept ready).

AK-15-5-6Ayodhya Kanda 15.5–6 (युग्मम्)

गङ्गायमुनयोःपुण्यात्सङ्गमादाहृतं जलम्।।2.15.5।। याश्चान्या स्सरितः पुण्या ह्रदाः कूपा स्सरांसि च। प्राग्वाहाश्चोर्ध्ववाहाश्च तिर्यग्वाहा स्समाहिताः।।2.15.6।। ताभ्यश्चैवाहृतं तोयं समुद्रेभ्यश्च सर्वशः।

gaṅgāyamunayoḥpuṇyātsaṅgamādāhṛtṃ jalam||2.15.5|| yāścānyā ssaritḥ puṇyā hradāḥ kūpā ssarāṃsi ca| prāgvāhāścordhvavāhāśca tiryagvāhā ssamāhitāḥ||2.15.6|| tābhyaścaivāhṛtṃ toyṃ samudrebhyaśca sarvaśḥ|

Translation

पुण्यात् from sacred, गङ्गायमुनयो: सङ्गमात् from the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna, पुण्या: holy, अन्या: other, या:सरित: streams, ह्रदा: ponds, कूपा: wells, सरांसि च lakes as well, आहृतम् brought, जलम् water, प्राग्वाहा: flowing eastwards, ऊर्ध्ववाहा: flowing upwards, तिर्यग्वाहा: flowing zigzag, समाहिता: joined together, ताभ्य: च from them also, सर्वश: from all directions, समुद्रेभ्य: from all seas, आहृतम् has been collected, तोयम् water.

Meaning

Water had been fetched from the sacred confluence of Ganga and Yamuna, from other holy streams, wells, ponds and lakes, from rivers flowing eastward, westward, and zigzag, from rivers from all directions joined together. And from all the seas.

AK-15-7Ayodhya Kanda 15.7

सलाजाः क्षीरिभिश्छन्ना घटाः काञ्चनराजताः।।2.15.7।। पद्मोत्पलयुता भान्ति पूर्णाः परमवारिणा।

salājāḥ kṣīribhiśchannā ghaṭāḥ kāñcanarājatāḥ||2.15.7|| padmotpalayutā bhānti pūrṇāḥ paramavāriṇā|

Translation

सलाजा: with puffed corn, क्षीरिभि: leaves from trees rich in sap, छन्ना: covered, पद्मोत्पलयुता: with lotuses and waterlilies, परमवारिणा holy water, पूर्णा: filled with, काञ्चनराजता: made of gold and silver, घटा: vessels, भान्ति are shining.

Meaning

Gold and silver vessels filled with holy water and puffed corn, adorned with lotuses, water lilies and leaves from trees rich in sap shone.

AK-15-8Ayodhya Kanda 15.8

क्षौद्रं दधि घृतं लाजा दर्भा स्सुमनसः पयः।।2.15.8।। वेश्याश्चैव शुभाचारा स्सर्वाभरणभूषिताः।

kṣaudrṃ dadhi ghṛtṃ lājā darbhā ssumanasḥ payḥ||2.15.8|| veśyāścaiva śubhācārā ssarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ|

Translation

क्षौद्रम् honey, दधि curds, घृतम् ghee, लाजा: puffed grain, दर्भा: darbha grass, सुमनस: flowers, पय: milk, शुभाचारा: wellmannered, सर्वाभरणभूषिता: adorned with all types of ornaments, वेश्या: च एव courtesans as well.

Meaning

Honey, curd, ghee, puffed grain, darbha grass, flowers and milk were arranged. Wellmannered courtesans adorned with all kinds of ornaments (stood in position).

AK-15-9Ayodhya Kanda 15.9

चन्द्रांशुविकचप्रख्यं काञ्चनं रत्नभूषितम्।।2.15.9।। सज्जं तिष्ठति रामस्य वालव्यजनमुत्तमम्।

candrāṃśuvikacaprakhyṃ kāñcanṃ ratnabhūṣitam||2.15.9|| sajjṃ tiṣṭhati rāmasya vālavyajanamuttamam|

Translation

चन्द्रांशुविकचप्रख्यम् resembling diffused rays of the moon, काञ्चनम् made of gold, रत्नभूषितम् adorned with gems, रामस्य for Rama, उत्तमम् excellent, वालव्यजनम् a fan made of yak's tail, सज्जं तिष्ठति is held in readiness.

Meaning

An excellent fan of yak's tail with a staff of gold studded with gems looking like diffused moonbeams was kept ready.

AK-15-10Ayodhya Kanda 15.10

चन्द्रमण्डलसङ्काशमातपत्रं च पाण्डुरम्।।2.15.10।। सज्जं द्युतिकरं श्रीमदभिषेकपुरस्कृतम्।

candramaṇḍalasaṅkāśamātapatrṃ ca pāṇḍuram||2.15.10|| sajjṃ dyutikarṃ śrīmadabhiṣekapuraskṛtam|

Translation

चन्द्रमण्डलसंकाशम् resembling the Moon's orb, पाण्डुरम् pale white, द्युतिकरम् lustrous like the pole star अभिषेकपुरस्कृतम् to be placed in front of the coronation pavilion, श्रीमत् majestic, आतपत्रं umbrella, सज्जम् is arranged.

Meaning

A lustrous pale white umbrella resembling the Moon's orb or the pole star was kept in front of the coronation pavilion.

AK-15-11Ayodhya Kanda 15.11

पाण्डुरश्च वृषस्सज्जः पाण्डुरोऽश्वश्च सुस्थितः।।2.15.11।। प्रसृतश्च गजःश्रीमानौपवाह्यः प्रतीक्षते।

pāṇḍuraśca vṛṣassajjḥ pāṇḍuro'śvaśca susthitḥ||2.15.11|| prasṛtaśca gajḥśrīmānaupavāhyḥ pratīkṣate|

Translation

पाण्डुर: pale white, वृष: bull, सज्ज: is kept ready, अश्व:च horse also, सुस्थित: in state, प्रसृत: flowing ichor (from its temples), श्रीमान् majestic, औपवाह्य: worthy of ride by a king, गज: च elephant also, प्रतीक्षते is awaiting.

Meaning

A bull and a horse both pale white and a majestic elephant in rut worthy of royal ride stood waiting.

AK-15-12Ayodhya Kanda 15.12

अष्टौ च कन्या माङ्गल्या स्सर्वाभरणभूषिताः।।2.15.12।। वादित्राणि च सर्वाणि वन्दिनश्च तथाऽपरे।

aṣṭau ca kanyā māṅgalyā ssarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ||2.15.12|| vāditrāṇi ca sarvāṇi vandinaśca tathā'pare|

Translation

सर्वाभरणभूषिता: adorned with all kinds of ornament, माङ्गल्या: auspicious, अष्टौ eight, कन्या:unmarried girls, सर्वाणि all sorts of, वादित्राणि musical instruments, वन्दिन: च also panegyrists, तथा and, परे others (stood waiting).

Meaning

Eight auspicious maidens adorned with all types of ornaments, all sorts of musical instruments, panegyrists and others (were in waiting).

AK-15-13-15Ayodhya Kanda 15.13–15 (त्रिकम्)

इक्ष्वाकूणां यथा राज्ये संभ्रियेताभिषेचनम्।।2.15.13।। तथाजातीयमादाय राजपुत्राभिषेचनम्। ते राजवचनात्तत्र समवेतामहीपतिम्।।2.15.14।। अपश्यन्तोऽब्रुवन् को नु राज्ञो नः प्रतिवेदयेत्। न पश्यामश्च राजानमुदितश्च दिवाकरः।।2.15.15।। यौवराज्याभिषेकश्च सज्जो रामस्य धीमतः।

ikṣvākūṇāṃ yathā rājye sṃbhriyetābhiṣecanam||2.15.13|| tathājātīyamādāya rājaputrābhiṣecanam| te rājavacanāttatra samavetāmahīpatim||2.15.14|| apaśyanto'bruvan ko nu rājño nḥ prativedayet| na paśyāmaśca rājānamuditaśca divākarḥ||2.15.15|| yauvarājyābhiṣekaśca sajjo rāmasya dhīmatḥ|

Translation

इक्ष्वाकूणाम् of the descendants of the Ikshvakus, राज्ये in the kingdom, अभिषेचनम् consecration, यथा as, संभ्रियेत् might have been arranged, तथा जातीयम् pertaining to that race, राजपुत्राभिषेचनम् for the consecration of the prince, आदाय having brought, राजवचनात् in accordance with the order of the king, तत्र there, समवेता: having assembled, ते they, महीपतिम् to the king, अपश्यन्त: not beholding, न: about us, क: नु who indeed, राज्ञ: to the king, प्रतिवेदयेत् inform, अब्रुवन् said, राजानम् to the king, न च पश्याम: (we) do not see, दिवाकर: च sun also, उदित: has risen, धीमत: sagacious, रामस्य Rama's, यौवराज्याभिषेक: च consecration as prince regent, सज्ज: is ready.

Meaning

Just as articles necessary for the consecration of the descendants of the Ikshvakus, are customarily arranged in the kingdom, in the same way things were arranged for the coronation of the prince belonging to that race. All those who had assembled there in response to the order of the king could not see him and so they said to themselves 'Who will inform the king of our arrival. Everything is kept ready for consecration of the sagacious Rama as prince regent. The Sun has risen. But we do not find the king'.

AK-15-16Ayodhya Kanda 15.16

इति तेषु ब्रुवाणेषु सार्वभौमान् महीपतीन्।।2.15.16।। अब्रवीत्तानिदं सर्वान्सुमन्त्रो राजसत्कृतः।

iti teṣu bruvāṇeṣu sārvabhaumān mahīpatīn||2.15.16|| abravīttānidṃ sarvānsumantro rājasatkṛtḥ|

Translation

तेषु while they, इति thus, ब्रुवाणेषु were speaking, राजसत्कृत: the king's confidant, सुमन्त्र: Sumantra, तान् them, सर्वान् all, सार्वभौमान् sovereigns, महीपतीन् kings, इदम् this word, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

While the sovereign monarchs who hailed from different parts of the earth were thus talking Sumantra the king's confidant said:

AK-15-17Ayodhya Kanda 15.17

रामं राज्ञो नियोगेन त्वरया प्रस्थितोऽस्म्यहम्।।2.15.17।। पूज्या राज्ञो भवन्तस्तु रामस्य च विशेषतः।

rāmṃ rājño niyogena tvarayā prasthito'smyaham||2.15.17|| pūjyā rājño bhavantastu rāmasya ca viśeṣatḥ|

Translation

अहम् I, राज्ञ: king's, नियोगेन by command, रामम् Rama, त्वरया quickly, प्रस्थित: अस्मि I am departing, भवन्त: तु as for all of you, राज्ञ: to the king, पूज्या: venerable, विशेषत: especially, रामस्य च for Rama also.

Meaning

In obedience to the king's command I am hurrying for Rama. All of you are honourable to king Dasaratha, especially to Rama.

AK-15-18Ayodhya Kanda 15.18

अयं पृच्छामि वचनात्सुखमायुष्मतामहम्।।2.15.18।। राज्ञः संप्रति बुद्धस्य यच्चागमनकारणम्।

ayṃ pṛcchāmi vacanātsukhamāyuṣmatāmaham||2.15.18|| rājñḥ sṃprati buddhasya yaccāgamanakāraṇam|

Translation

अयम् अहम् such I am, आयुष्मताम् longlived, वचनात् by your words, संप्रति बुद्धस्य to him now awake, राज्ञ: king's, सुखम् welfare, आगमनकारणं the reason for his coming, पृच्छामि I shall ask.

Meaning

On your behalf I shall enquire from the king who is awake now about his welfare and the reason for calling me here.

AK-15-19Ayodhya Kanda 15.19

इत्युक्त्वाऽन्तः पुरद्वारमाजगाम पुराणवित्।।2.15.19।। सदाऽसक्तं च तद्वेश्म सुमन्त्रः प्रविवेश ह।

ityuktvā'ntḥ puradvāramājagāma purāṇavit||2.15.19|| sadā'saktṃ ca tadveśma sumantrḥ praviveśa ha|

Translation

पुराणवित् one who is wellversed in history and tradition, सुमन्त्र: Sumantra, इति thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, अन्त:पुरद्वारम् entrance to the inner apartment, आजगाम approached, सदा always, सक्तम् remains closed, तत् that, वेश्म palace, प्रविवेश ह entered.

Meaning

Having said so, Sumantra who was versed in history and tradition approached the inner apartment which always remains closed.

AK-15-20Ayodhya Kanda 15.20

तुष्टावास्य तदा वंशं प्रविश्य स विशांपतेः।।2.15.20।। शयनीयं नरेन्द्रस्य तदाऽऽसाद्य व्यतिष्ठत।

tuṣṭāvāsya tadā vṃśṃ praviśya sa viśāṃpateḥ||2.15.20|| śayanīyṃ narendrasya tadā''sādya vyatiṣṭhata|

Translation

तदा then, स: he, प्रविश्य having entered, अस्य this, विशांपते: king's, वंशम् royal dynasty, तुष्टाव extoled, नरेन्द्रस्य king's, तत् शयनीयम् sleeping apartment, आसाद्य having approached, व्यतिष्ठत stood there.

Meaning

Entering the king's inner apartment, he began extoling the virtues of the royal dynasty, and stood there as he approached the king's bedchamber.

AK-15-21Ayodhya Kanda 15.21

सोऽत्यासाद्य तु तद्वेश्म तिरस्करणिमन्तरा।।2.15.21।। आशीर्भिर्गुणयुक्ताभि रभितुष्टाव राघवम्।

so'tyāsādya tu tadveśma tiraskaraṇimantarā||2.15.21|| āśīrbhirguṇayuktābhi rabhituṣṭāva rāghavam|

Translation

स: he, तत् वेश्म that bedchamber, तिरस्करिणम् अन्तरा behind the screen, आसाद्य having approached, गुणयुक्ताभि: with virtues, अशीर्भि: with blessings, राघवम् son of Raghus dynasty (Dasaratha), अभितुष्टाव praised.

Meaning

Having approached the king's bedchamber Sumatra stood behind the screen, singing his glory and seeking the blessings (of God) on this son of Raghus dynasty.

AK-15-22Ayodhya Kanda 15.22

सोमसूर्यौ च काकुत्स्थ शिववैश्रवणावपि।।2.15.22।। वरुणश्चाग्निरिन्द्रश्च विजयं प्रदिशन्तु ते।

somasūryau ca kākutstha śivavaiśravaṇāvapi||2.15.22|| varuṇaścāgnirindraśca vijayṃ pradiśantu te|

Translation

काकुत्स्थ O scion of the Kakutsthas (Dasaratha), सोमसूर्यौ Moon and Sun, शिववैश्रवणौ अपि Siva and Kubera also, वरुण: Varuna, अग्नि: Agni, इन्द्र: Indra, ते to you, विजयम् victory, प्रदिशन्तु let them grant.

Meaning

O scion of the kakutsthas (Dasaratha), may Moon and Sun, Siva and Kubera, Varuna, Agni and Indra grant you victory

AK-15-23Ayodhya Kanda 15.23

गता भगवती रात्रिरहः शिवमुपस्थितम्।।2.15.23।। बुद्ध्यस्व नृपशार्दूल कुरु कार्यमनन्तरम्।

gatā bhagavatī rātrirahḥ śivamupasthitam||2.15.23|| buddhyasva nṛpaśārdūla kuru kāryamanantaram|

Translation

भगवती holy, रात्रि: night, गता has passed, शिवम् auspicious, अह: day, उपस्थितम् has arrived, नृपशार्दुल O tiger among kings, बुद्ध्यस्व may wake up, अनन्तरम् later, कार्यम् acts, कुरु perform.

Meaning

The holy night has passed and the auspicious day has arrived. O tiger among kings, awaken and attend to your duties.

AK-15-24Ayodhya Kanda 15.24

ब्राह्मणा बलमुख्याश्च नैगमाश्चागता नृप।।2.15.24।। दर्शनं तेऽभिकांक्षन्ते प्रतिबुध्यस्व राघव।

brāhmaṇā balamukhyāśca naigamāścāgatā nṛpa||2.15.24|| darśanṃ te'bhikāṃkṣante pratibudhyasva rāghava|

Translation

राघव born in the family of Raghu, नृप O king, ब्राह्मणा: brahmins, बलमुख्या: च army commanders, नैगमा: च merchants also, आगता: have arrived, दर्शनम् your audience, (अभि) कांक्षन्ते request, प्रतिबुध्यस्व may awaken.

Meaning

O scion of the Raghu dynasty brahmins, army commanders and merchants have arrived and they beseech your audience. Please awake.

AK-15-25Ayodhya Kanda 15.25

स्तुवन्तं तं तदा सूतं सुमन्त्रं मन्त्रकोविदम्।।2.15.25।। प्रतिबुध्य ततो राजा इदं वचनमब्रवीत्।

stuvantṃ tṃ tadā sūtṃ sumantrṃ mantrakovidam||2.15.25|| pratibudhya tato rājā idṃ vacanamabravīt|

Translation

तत: thereafter, राजा king, प्रतिबुध्य being awake, तदा then, स्तुवन्तम् extoling, तम् मन्त्रकोविदम् expert counseller, सूतम् charioteer, सुमंत्रम् to Sumantra, इदं वचनम् this word, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Dasaratha waking up saw the charioteer and expert counsellor Sumantra extoling him, and said:

AK-15-26Ayodhya Kanda 15.26

राममानय सूतेति यदस्यभिहितोऽनया।।2.15.26।। किमिदं कारणं येन ममाज्ञा प्रतिहन्यते।

rāmamānaya sūteti yadasyabhihito'nayā||2.15.26|| kimidṃ kāraṇṃ yena mamājñā pratihanyate|

Translation

सूत O charioteer, रामम् Rama, आनय bring, इति thus, अनया by her, यत् अभिहित: असि you have been told, येन why, मम my, आज्ञा command, प्रतिहन्यते has been disregarded, इदं कारणं किम् what is the reason?

Meaning

You had been asked by her (Kaikeyi) to bring Rama here. What is the reason the command is disregarded?

AK-15-27Ayodhya Kanda 15.27

न चैव संप्रसुप्तोऽहमानयेहाशु राघवम्।।2.15.27।। इति राजा दशरथ स्सूतं तत्रान्वशात्पुनः।

na caiva sṃprasupto'hamānayehāśu rāghavam||2.15.27|| iti rājā daśaratha ssūtṃ tatrānvaśātpunḥ|

Translation

अहम् I, न च एव संप्रसुप्त: I have not slept, आशु instantly, राघवम् to son of the Raghus (Rama), इह here, आनय bring, इति thus, राजा दशरथ: king Dasaratha, तत्र there, सूतम् to the charioteer, पुन: again, अन्वशात् ordered.

Meaning

I did not sleep (last night). Bring Rama here at once, said king Dasaratha to the charioteer again.

AK-15-28Ayodhya Kanda 15.28

स राजवचनं श्रुत्वा शिरसा प्रतिपूज्य तम्।।2.15.28।। निर्जगाम नृपावासान्मन्यमानः प्रियं महत्।

sa rājavacanṃ śrutvā śirasā pratipūjya tam||2.15.28|| nirjagāma nṛpāvāsānmanyamānḥ priyṃ mahat|

Translation

स: he, राजवचनम् words of the king, श्रुत्वा having heard, तम् him, शिरसा bowing with his head down, प्रतिपूज्य offering salutations, महत् great, प्रियम् happy, मन्यमान: while reflecting, नृपावासात् from the kings's palace, निर्जगाम went out.

Meaning

At these words of the king, he offered his salutations by bowing his head and left the king's apartment, reflecting on the great happy event.

AK-15-29Ayodhya Kanda 15.29

प्रसन्नो राजमार्गं च पताकाध्वजशोभितम्।।2.15.29।। हृष्टः प्रमुदित स्सूतो जगामाशु विलोकयन्।

prasanno rājamārgṃ ca patākādhvajaśobhitam||2.15.29|| hṛṣṭḥ pramudita ssūto jagāmāśu vilokayan|

Translation

सूत: charioteer, प्रसन्न: cheerful, पताकाध्वजशोभितम् bedecked with pennants and banners, राजमार्गं च highway also, विलोकयन् seeing, हृष्ट: rejoiced, प्रमुदित: delighted, जगाम went.

Meaning

The charioteer left cheerfully, happily looking at the highway bedecked with pennants and banners.

AK-15-30Ayodhya Kanda 15.30

स सूतस्तत्र शुश्राव रामाधिकरणाः कथाः।।2.15.30।। अभिषेचनसंयुक्तास्सर्वलोकस्य हृष्टवत्।

sa sūtastatra śuśrāva rāmādhikaraṇāḥ kathāḥ||2.15.30|| abhiṣecanasṃyuktāssarvalokasya hṛṣṭavat|

Translation

The charioteer heard the conversation relating to Rama and his consecration among the happy citizens.

AK-15-31Ayodhya Kanda 15.31

ततो ददर्श रुचिरं कैलासशिखरप्रभम्।।2.15.31।। रामवेश्म सुमन्त्रस्तु शक्रवेश्मसमप्रभम्।

tato dadarśa rucirṃ kailāsaśikharaprabham||2.15.31|| rāmaveśma sumantrastu śakraveśmasamaprabham|

Translation

तत: thereafter, सुमन्त्र: तु Sumantra on his part, कैलासशिखरप्रभम् in lustre comparable to the peak of Kailasa, शक्रवेश्मसमप्रभम् resembling in splendour the abode of Indra, रुचिरम् lovely, रामवेश्म palace of Rama, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

Thereafter, Sumantra beheld the beautiful palace of Rama, resembling the abode of Indra or the peak of Kailasa in its splendour.

AK-15-32-40Ayodhya Kanda 15.32–40 (कुलकम्)

Meaning

The charioteer (Sumantra) beheld Rama's palace closed with two heavypanelled doors. Adorned with hundreds of galleries, it had a peak mounted with golden idols. The arches were studded with different gems and corals. Bright like dense autumnal cloud, it shone like the cave of mount Meru. It was ornamented with excellent garlands and precious diamonds. Pearls were strewn around. Decorated with sandal and aloe wood, it emitted, like the peak of mount Dardura, captivating fragrance৷৷ Sarasas and peacocks were singing sweetly. The palace was full of skilfully carved images of deer and other embellishments. It attracted the minds and the eyes of all living beings with brilliant splendour. Resplendent like the Sun and the Moon, it looked like the abode of Kubera and a reflected image of the abode of Mahendra. It was crowded with birds of various kinds. In height it was equal to the peak of mount Meru. Villagers thronged the palace with gifts, eagerly waiting with folded hands to see the spectacle of Rama's coronation. Lofty, it looked like a vast cloud. Welldecked and filled with various gems, it was crowded with hunchbacks and kiratas (hunters) too.

AK-15-41Ayodhya Kanda 15.41

स वाजियुक्तेन रथेन सारथिः नराकुलं राजकुलं विराजयन्। वरूथिना रामगृहाभिपातिना पुरस्य सर्वस्य मनांसि हर्षयन्।।2.15.41।।

sa vājiyuktena rathena sārathiḥ narākulṃ rājakulṃ virājayan| varūthinā rāmagṛhābhipātinā purasya sarvasya manāṃsi harṣayan||2.15.41||

Translation

स: that, सारथि: charioteer, रामगृहाभिपातिना going towards the palace of Rama, वरूथिना (covered) with a wooden fender (as a defence against collision), वाजियुक्तेन harnessed with horses, रथेन by a chariot, नराकुलं (समाकुलम्) crowded with people, राजकुलम् royal palace, विराजयन् appearing, सर्वस्य all, पुरस्य city's, मनांसि minds, हर्षयन् delighting.

Meaning

Mounted on a chariot, attached with a fender and driven by horses, the charioteer advanced towards the royal palace of Rama delighting the minds of the people of the city.

AK-15-42Ayodhya Kanda 15.42

ततस्समासाद्य महाधनं महत् प्रहृष्टरोमा स बभूब सारथिः। मृर्गैर्मयूरैश्च समाकुलोल्बणं गृहं वरार्हस्य शचीपतेरिव।।2.15.42।।

tatassamāsādya mahādhanṃ mahat prahṛṣṭaromā sa babhūba sārathiḥ| mṛrgairmayūraiśca samākulolbaṇṃ gṛhṃ varārhasya śacīpateriva||2.15.42||

Translation

तत: thereafter, स: सारथि: that charioteer, महाधनम् opulent, महत् magnificent, मृगै: with deer, मयूरैश्च with peacocks, समाकुलोल्बणम् with pervading beauty, शचीपते: इव like that of the consort of Sachi, Indra, वरार्हस्य of a befitting man, गृहं palace, समासाद्य having reached, प्रहृष्टरोमा बभूव was thrilled.

Meaning

Having reached the palace abounding in deer and peacocks which resembled the magnificent and opulent abode of Indra, the charioteer was thrilled at the allpervading beauty of the place befitting Rama.

AK-15-43Ayodhya Kanda 15.43

स तत्र कैलासनिभास्स्वलंकृताः प्रविश्य कक्ष्यास्त्रिदशालयोपमाः। प्रियान्वरान् राममते स्थितान् बहून् व्यपोह्य शुद्धान्तमुपस्थितो रथी।।2.15.43।।

sa tatra kailāsanibhāssvalṃkṛtāḥ praviśya kakṣyāstridaśālayopamāḥ| priyānvarān rāmamate sthitān bahūn vyapohya śuddhāntamupasthito rathī||2.15.43||

Translation

स: that, रथी charioteer, तत्र there, कैलासनिभा: similar to Kailasa, स्वलंकृता: welldecorated, त्रिदशालयोपमा: like the abode of celestials, कक्ष्या: courtyards, प्रविश्य having entered, राममते close to Rama's heart, स्थितान् the waiting ones, बहून् many, वरान् best, प्रियान् friends, व्यपोह्य passing through, शुद्धान्तम् private apartment, उपस्थित: approached.

Meaning

Having entered the welldecorated palace which was (lofty) like Kailasa, he crossed the courtyards comparable to the abode of the celestials, passed through the many bosom friends of Rama and entered the private apartment.

AK-15-44Ayodhya Kanda 15.44

स तत्र शुश्राव च हर्षयुक्ताः रामाभिषेकार्थकृता जनानाम्। नरेन्द्रसूनोरभिमङ्गलार्थाः सर्वस्य लोकस्य गिरः प्रहृष्टः।।2.15.44।।

sa tatra śuśrāva ca harṣayuktāḥ rāmābhiṣekārthakṛtā janānām| narendrasūnorabhimaṅgalārthāḥ sarvasya lokasya girḥ prahṛṣṭḥ||2.15.44||

Translation

तत्र there, स: he, जनानाम् people's, रामाभिषेकार्थकृता: acts done for the enthronement of Rama, हर्षयुक्ता: happy, नरेन्द्रसूनो: prince's (Rama's), अभिमंगलार्था: for his wellbeing, सर्वस्य from everyone, लोकस्य people's, प्रहृष्ट: full of delight, गिर: words, शुश्राव heard.

Meaning

There he heard the happy words spoken by people about the enthronement of prince Rama and his future wellbeing.

AK-15-45Ayodhya Kanda 15.45

महेन्द्रसद्मप्रतिमं तु वेश्म रामस्य रम्यं मृगपक्षि जुष्टम्। ददर्श मेरोरिव श्रुङ्गमुच्चं विभ्राजमानं प्रभया सुमन्त्रः।।2.15.45।।

mahendrasadmapratimṃ tu veśma rāmasya ramyṃ mṛgapakṣi juṣṭam| dadarśa meroriva śruṅgamuccṃ vibhrājamānṃ prabhayā sumantrḥ||2.15.45||

Translation

सुमन्त्र: Sumantra, महेन्द्रसद्मप्रतिमम् resembling the abode of Indra, मृगपक्षिजुष्टम् filled with animals and birds, मेरो: mount Meru's, उच्चं high, शृङ्गम् इव like a summit, प्रभया with splendour, विभ्रजमानम् shining, रम्यम् beautiful, रामस्य वेश्म Rama's palace, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

Sumantra beheld Rama's palace which resembled the high summit of mount Meru shining with splendour. Filled with animals and birds, if looked like the abode of Indra.

AK-15-46Ayodhya Kanda 15.46

उपस्थितैरञ्जलिकारकैश्च सोपायनैर्जानपदैर्जनैश्च। कोट्या परार्धैश्च विमुक्तयानैः समाकुलं द्वारपथं ददर्श।।2.15.46।।

upasthitairañjalikārakaiśca sopāyanairjānapadairjanaiśca| koṭyā parārdhaiśca vimuktayānaiḥ samākulṃ dvārapathṃ dadarśa||2.15.46||

Translation

उपस्थितै: by men present, अञ्जलि कारकैश्च (अञ्जलि कारिभिश्च) paying obeisance with folded palms, सोपायनै: (with their hands ) full of gifts, विमुक्तयानै: having left their chariots, कोट्या in crores of, परार्धैश्च billions, जानपदै: villagers, जनैश्च citizens from towns, समाकुलं thronged, द्वारपथं gateway, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

He saw villagers and others in crores and parardhas, leaving their chariots and thronging the gateway, (some) paying obeisance with folded palms and (some) carrying gifts in their hands.

AK-15-47Ayodhya Kanda 15.47

ततो महामेघमहीधराभं प्रभिन्नमत्यङ्कुशमत्यसह्यम्। रामौपवाह्यं रुचिरं ददर्श शत्रुञ्जयं नागमुदग्रकायम्।।2.15.47।।

tato mahāmeghamahīdharābhṃ prabhinnamatyaṅkuśamatyasahyam| rāmaupavāhyṃ rucirṃ dadarśa śatruñjayṃ nāgamudagrakāyam||2.15.47||

Translation

तत: thereafter, महामेघमहीधराभम् resembling a great cloud or a vast mountain, प्रभिन्नम् ichor flowing from its temples, अत्यङ्कुशम् without caring for the goad, असह्यम् intolerant, उदग्रकायम् having a huge body, रामौपवाह्यम् fit to be mounted by Rama, रुचिरम् beautiful, शत्रृञ्जयम् by name Satrunjaya, नागम् elephant, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

He beheld a beautiful elephant named Satrunjaya with a huge body on which Rama was to mount. It looked like a vast mountain or a huge cloud. With ichor flowing from his temples and without caring for the goad, the elephant was intolerant.

AK-15-48Ayodhya Kanda 15.48

स्वलङ्कृतान् साश्वरथान् सकुञ्जरा नमात्य मुख्यांश्च ददर्श वल्लभान्। व्यपोह्य सूतस्सहितान् समन्ततः समृद्धमन्तःपुरमाविवेश ह।।2.15.48।।

svalaṅkṛtān sāśvarathān sakuñjarā namātya mukhyāṃśca dadarśa vallabhān| vyapohya sūtassahitān samantatḥ samṛddhamantḥpuramāviveśa ha||2.15.48||

Translation

स्वलंङ्कृतान् welladorned, साश्वरथान् with horses and chariots, सकुञ्जरान् with elephants, वल्लभान् dear to the king, अमात्यमुख्यांश्च important ministers also, ददर्श saw, सूत: charioteer, समन्तत: on all sides, सहितान् assembled, व्यपोह्य getting out of the way, समृद्धम् glorious, अन्त:पुरम् private apartment, आविवेश entered.

Meaning

Important ministers who were dear to the king and welladorned arrived there on their horses, chariots and elephants. Sumantra finding his way through the crowd of the people who assembled on all sides, entered the glorious private apartment of Rama.

AK-15-49Ayodhya Kanda 15.49

तदन्द्रिकूटाचलमेघसन्निभं महाविमानोपमवेश्मसंयुतम्। अवार्यमाणः प्रविवेश सारथिः प्रभूतरत्नं मकरो यथार्णवम्।।2.15.49।।

tadandrikūṭācalameghasannibhṃ mahāvimānopamaveśmasṃyutam| avāryamāṇḥ praviveśa sārathiḥ prabhūtaratnṃ makaro yathārṇavam||2.15.49||

Translation

तत: afterwards, सारथि: charioteer, अद्रिकूटाचलमेघसन्निभम् similar to motionless cloud over a mountain peak, महाविमानोपमवेश्मसंयुतम् surrounded by splendid rooms, मकर: crocodile, prevented, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

The palace looked like a mountain peak covered by a cloud and a great vimana surrounded by splendid apartments. The charioteer entered the palace unobstructed like a crocodile entering the ocean bristling with many gems. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे पञ्चदशःसर्गः।। Thus ends the fifteenth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
