AK-14-1Ayodhya Kanda 14.1

पुत्रशोकार्दितं पापा विसंज्ञं पतितं भुवि। विवेष्टमानमुद्वीक्ष्य सैक्ष्वाकमिदमब्रवीत्।।2.14.1।।

putraśokārditṃ pāpā visṃjñṃ patitṃ bhuvi| viveṣṭamānamudvīkṣya saikṣvākamidamabravīt||2.14.1||

Translation

सा पापा that evil woman, पुत्रशोकार्दितम् tortured with grief on account of his son, विसंज्ञम् having lost senses, भुवि on the floor, पतितम् had fallen, विवेष्टमानम् writhing, ऐक्ष्वाकम् (Dasaratha) born in the Ikshvaku race, इदम् this word, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

The evil woman (Kaikeyi) said to the king of the Ikshvaku race who lay unconscious on the floor writhing and tormented with grief on account of his son.

AK-14-2Ayodhya Kanda 14.2

पापं कृत्वैव किमिदं मम संश्रुत्य संश्रवम्। शेषे क्षितितले सन्नः स्थित्यां स्थातुं त्वमर्हसि।।2.14.2।।

pāpṃ kṛtvaiva kimidṃ mama sṃśrutya sṃśravam| śeṣe kṣititale sannḥ sthityāṃ sthātuṃ tvamarhasi||2.14.2||

Translation

मम me (what you have done for me), संश्रवम् the promise, संश्रुत्य having promised, पापं कृत्वा इव as if you have committed a sin done a sinful act, सन्नः a dejected man, क्षितितले on the ground (floor), शेषे lying down, इदम् this, किम् what, त्वम् you, स्थित्याम् status, स्थातुम् to remain, अर्हसि you are worthy of.

Meaning

(Kaikeyi said) What is this? After hearing my response to the promised boon, why are you lying down on the floor dejected as if you had committed a sin? It behoves you to maintain your status.

AK-14-3Ayodhya Kanda 14.3

आहु स्सत्यं हि परमं धर्मं धर्मविदो जनाः। सत्यमाश्रित्य हि मया त्वं च धर्मं प्रबोधितः।।2.14.3।।

āhu ssatyṃ hi paramṃ dharmṃ dharmavido janāḥ| satyamāśritya hi mayā tvṃ ca dharmṃ prabodhitḥ||2.14.3||

Translation

धर्मविदः conversant with righteousness, जनाः people, सत्यम् truth, परमं धर्मम् is a great virtue, आहुः हि are saying, मया च by me also, सत्यम् truth, आश्रित्य by following, त्वम् you, धर्मम् about your duty, प्रबोधितः enlightened with.

Meaning

Those conversant with righteousness say that truth is a great virtue. By following the truth, I have enlightened you about your duty.

AK-14-4Ayodhya Kanda 14.4

संश्रुत्य शैब्यश्श्येनाय स्वां तनुं जगतीपतिः। प्रदाय पक्षिणे राज न्जगाम गतिमुत्तमाम्।।2.14.4।।

sṃśrutya śaibyaśśyenāya svāṃ tanuṃ jagatīpatiḥ| pradāya pakṣiṇe rāja njagāma gatimuttamām||2.14.4||

Translation

राजन् O king, जगतीपतिः lord of the earth, शैब्यः Saibya, श्येनाय पक्षिणे to a hawk, a bird, स्वाम् his own, तनुम् body, संश्रुत्य having promised, उत्तमाम् highest, गतिम् state, जगाम attained.

Meaning

O King O lord of the earth (king) Saibya attained the highest state by offering his own body to a hawk in accordance with his promise.

AK-14-5Ayodhya Kanda 14.5

तथा ह्यलर्कस्तेजस्वी ब्राह्मणे वेदपारगे। याचमाने स्वके नेत्रे उद्धृत्याविमना ददौ।।2.14.5।।

tathā hyalarkastejasvī brāhmaṇe vedapārage| yācamāne svake netre uddhṛtyāvimanā dadau||2.14.5||

Translation

तथा In the same way, तेजस्वी lustrous, अलर्कः (king) Alarka, वेदपारगे to an adept in the Vedas, याचमाने soliciting, ब्राह्मणे (to) the brahmin, स्वके his own, नेत्रे eyes, उद्धृत्य havng plucked, अविमनाः without hesitation, ददौ हि gave it indeed.

Meaning

In the same way the lustrous king Alarka, on being solicited by a brahmin who was an adept in the Vedas, plucked his own eyes and gave them to him without hesitation.

AK-14-6Ayodhya Kanda 14.6

सरितां तु पतिस्स्वल्पां मर्यादां सत्यमन्वितः। सत्यानुरोधात्समये स्वां वेलां नातिवर्तते।।2.14.6।।

saritāṃ tu patissvalpāṃ maryādāṃ satyamanvitḥ| satyānurodhātsamaye svāṃ velāṃ nātivartate||2.14.6||

Translation

सरितां पतिः तु as regards the lord of rivers (ocean), सत्यम् अन्वित: who follows the truth, स्वल्पाम् very little, मर्यादाम् as boundary, स्वाम् his own, वेलाम् shore, समये when time comes, सत्यानुरोधात् in obedience to truth, नातिवर्तते does not trangress.

Meaning

The ocean, lord of rivers, even when (tidal) time comes does not cross the shore in obedience to truth.

AK-14-7Ayodhya Kanda 14.7

सत्यमेकपदं ब्रह्म सत्ये धर्मः प्रतिष्टितः। सत्यमेवाक्षया वेदा सत्येनैवाप्यते स्परम्।।2.14.7।।

satyamekapadṃ brahma satye dharmḥ pratiṣṭitḥ| satyamevākṣayā vedā satyenaivāpyate sparam||2.14.7||

Translation

सत्यम् truth, एकपदम् in the form of one word, ब्रह्म Brahman, सत्ये on truth, धर्मः righteousness, प्रतिष्ठितः is established firmly, सत्यमेव truth alone, अक्षयाः is imperishable, वेदाः Vedas, सत्यमेव by truth alone, परम् supreme state, आप्यते will be attained.

Meaning

Truth is Brahman in one word. Righteousness is firmly established in truth. Truth is the imperishable Vedas. The supreme state can be attained by means of truth.

AK-14-8Ayodhya Kanda 14.8

सत्यं समनुवर्तस्व यदि धर्मे धृता मतिः। सफलस्स वरो मेऽस्तु वरदो ह्यसि सत्तम।।2.14.8।।

satyṃ samanuvartasva yadi dharme dhṛtā matiḥ| saphalassa varo me'stu varado hyasi sattama||2.14.8||

Translation

सत्तम O excellent one, मतिः your mind, धर्मे in righteousness, धृता यदि if fixed firmly, सत्यम् truth, समनुवर्तस्व follow it , मे my, वरः boon, सफलः अस्तु may be fulfilled, वरदः असि हि you are the bestower of boons indeed.

Meaning

O excellent one, if your mind is firmly fixed in righteousness, then by following it fulfil the boon granted to me.You are the bestower of boons indeed

AK-14-9Ayodhya Kanda 14.9

धर्मस्यैहाभिकामार्थं मम चैवाभिचोदनात्। प्रव्राजय सुतं रामं त्रिःखलु त्वां ब्रवीम्यहम्।।2.14.9।।

dharmasyaihābhikāmārthṃ mama caivābhicodanāt| pravrājaya sutṃ rāmṃ triḥkhalu tvāṃ bravīmyaham||2.14.9||

Translation

इह in this matter, धर्मस्य of righteousness, अभिकामार्थम् fulfilling for the sake of, मम my, अभिचोदनाच्च urging you, सुतम् son, रामम् Rama, प्रव्राजय be exiled, त्वाम् to you, त्रिः thrice, अहम् I, अब्रवीमि am telling you.

Meaning

You must uphold righteousness. I also urge you to do that. Send your son Rama to the forest. I am repeating this statememt thrice.

AK-14-10Ayodhya Kanda 14.10

समयं च ममार्येमं यदि त्वं न करिष्यसि। अग्रतस्ते परित्यक्ता परित्यक्ष्यामि जीवितम्।।2.14.10।।

samayṃ ca mamāryemṃ yadi tvṃ na kariṣyasi| agrataste parityaktā parityakṣyāmi jīvitam||2.14.10||

Translation

आर्य O noble one, त्वम् you, मम my, इमम् this, समयम् agreement, न करिष्यसि यदि if you do not fulfil, परित्यक्ता abandoned (by you), ते अग्रतः in your presence, जीवितम् my life, परित्यक्ष्यामि will discard.

Meaning

O noble one, if you do not fulfil the agreement, it will mean I have been abandoned by you. (Therefore) I will give up my life in your presence.

AK-14-11Ayodhya Kanda 14.11

एवं प्रचोदितो राजा कैकेय्या निर्विशङ्कया। नाशकत्पाशमुन्मोक्तुं बलिरिन्द्रकृतं यथा।।2.14.11।।

evṃ pracodito rājā kaikeyyā nirviśaṅkayā| nāśakatpāśamunmoktuṃ balirindrakṛtṃ yathā||2.14.11||

Translation

निर्विशङ्कया without fear or hesitation, कैकेय्या by Kaikeyi, एवम् in this way, प्रचोदितः having been urged, राजा king, बलिः emperor Bali, इन्द्रकृतं यथा like the one employed by Indra (through Vamana), पाशम् noose (promise), मोक्तुम् to release, नाशकत् was not able.

Meaning

In this way urged by Kaikeyi without fear or hesitation, he (Dasaratha), like Bali unable to release himself from the noose cast by Indra (through Vamana), could not get out of the noose of promise.

AK-14-12Ayodhya Kanda 14.12

उद्भ्रान्तहृदयश्चापि विवर्णवदनोऽभवत्। स धुर्योवैपरिस्पन्दन्युगचक्रान्तरं यथा।।2.14.12।।

udbhrāntahṛdayaścāpi vivarṇavadano'bhavat| sa dhuryovaiparispandanyugacakrāntarṃ yathā||2.14.12||

Translation

सः Dasaratha, युगचक्रान्तरम् between the wheels and the yoke, परिस्पन्दन् restlessly moving, धुर्यः यथा like a beast of burden (bullock), उद्भ्रान्तहृदयः with heart beating wildly, विवर्णवदनः चापि with a pale face too, अभवत् remained.

Meaning

Like a bullock, restlessly moving between the wheels and the yoke, Dasaratha's heart started beating wildly and his face turned pale.

AK-14-13Ayodhya Kanda 14.13

विह्वलाभ्यां च नेत्राभ्यामपश्यन्निव भूपतिः। कृच्छ्राद्धैर्येण संस्तभ्य कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत्।।2.14.13।।

vihvalābhyāṃ ca netrābhyāmapaśyanniva bhūpatiḥ| kṛcchrāddhairyeṇa sṃstabhya kaikeyīmidamabravīt||2.14.13||

Translation

भूपतिः king, विह्वलाभ्याम् नेत्राभ्याम् eyes overwhelmed (with fears), अपश्यन्निव as if unable to see, कृच्छ्रात् with great difficulty, धैर्येण with courage, संस्तभ्य gaining a firm footing, कैकेयीम् to Kaikeyi, इदम् this, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

The king was unable to see with his eyes overwhelmed (with tears). Gaining with great difficulty a firm footing and courage he addressed Kaikeyi:

AK-14-14Ayodhya Kanda 14.14

यस्ते मन्त्रकृतः पाणिरग्नौ पापे मया धृतः। तं त्यजामि स्वजं चैव तव पुत्रं त्वया सह।।2.14.14।।

yaste mantrakṛtḥ pāṇiragnau pāpe mayā dhṛtḥ| tṃ tyajāmi svajṃ caiva tava putrṃ tvayā saha||2.14.14||

Translation

पापे O wicked woman, अग्नौ at the sacred fire, मन्त्रकृतः amid chantings of mantras, ते your, यः पाणिः which hand, मया by me, धृतः was held, तम् that one, स्वजम् begotten by me, तव पुत्रं चैव your son also, त्वया सह along with you, त्यजामि disown.

Meaning

O wicked woman, I held your hand amid chantings of mantras with the sacred fire (as witness). I now disown that hand, you and your son begotten by me.

AK-14-15Ayodhya Kanda 14.15

प्रयाता रजनी देवि सूर्यस्योदयनंप्रति। अभिषेकं गुरुजनस्त्वरयिष्यति मां ध्रुवम्।।2.14.15।।

prayātā rajanī devi sūryasyodayanṃprati| abhiṣekṃ gurujanastvarayiṣyati māṃ dhruvam||2.14.15||

Translation

देवि O queen, रजनी night, सूर्यस्य of the Sun, उदयनं प्रति about to rise, प्रयाता departed, अभिषेकम् consecration, गुरुजनः preceptors, माम् me, ध्रुवम् definitely, त्वरयिष्यति will hurry me

Meaning

O queen the night has departed and the Sun is about to rise. The preceptors now will definitely ask me to hasten for the consecration.

AK-14-16Ayodhya Kanda 14.16

रामाभिषेकसंभारैस्तदर्थमुपकल्पितैः। रामः कारयितव्यो मे मृतस्य सलिलक्रियाम्।।2.14.16।।

rāmābhiṣekasṃbhāraistadarthamupakalpitaiḥ| rāmḥ kārayitavyo me mṛtasya salilakriyām||2.14.16||

Translation

तदर्थम् for that purpose, उपकल्पितैः arranged, रामाभिषेकसम्भारैः all preparations for Rama's consecration, मृतस्य of the dead, मे to me, रामः Rama, सलिलक्रियाम् the funeal rites it offering water to the dead, कारयितव्यः should be done.

Meaning

With the materials already collected for the consecration of Rama he will perform my funeral rite of offering water to the dead.

AK-14-17Ayodhya Kanda 14.17

त्वया सपुत्रया नैव कर्तव्या सलिलक्रिया। व्याहन्ताऽस्यशुभाचारे यदि रामाभिषेचनम्।।2.14.17।।

tvayā saputrayā naiva kartavyā salilakriyā| vyāhantā'syaśubhācāre yadi rāmābhiṣecanam||2.14.17||

Translation

अशुभाचारे O woman of inauspicious practices, रामाभिषेचनम् Rama's consecration, व्याहन्तासि यदि if you prevent, सपुत्रया along with your son, त्वया by you, सलिलक्रिया offering water to the dead, नैवकर्तव्या should not be done.

Meaning

O woman of inauspicious practices, since you are obstructing Rama's coronation, you and your son shall not perform my funeral rite of offering water to the dead.

AK-14-18Ayodhya Kanda 14.18

न च शक्तोऽस्म्यहं द्रष्टुं दृष्ट्वा पूर्वं तथासुखम्। हतहर्षं निरानन्दं पुनर्जनमवाङ्मुखम्।।2.14.18।।

na ca śakto'smyahṃ draṣṭuṃ dṛṣṭvā pūrvṃ tathāsukham| hataharṣṃ nirānandṃ punarjanamavāṅmukham||2.14.18||

Translation

पूर्वम् formerly, तथासुखम् enjoying such happiness, जनम् people, दृष्ट्वा having seen, पुनः again, हतहर्षम् bereft of cheerfulness, निरानन्दम् devoid of happiness, अवाङ्मुखम् with downcast faces, द्रष्टुम् to see, अहम् I, न शक्नोमि च not able.

Meaning

Having seen people formerly enjoying happiness, I cannot see them again with their downcast, cheerless faces devoid of all happiness.

AK-14-19Ayodhya Kanda 14.19

तां तथा ब्रुवतस्तस्य भूमिपस्य महात्मनः। प्रभाता शर्वरी पुण्या चन्द्रनक्षत्रशालिनी।।2.14.19।।

tāṃ tathā bruvatastasya bhūmipasya mahātmanḥ| prabhātā śarvarī puṇyā candranakṣatraśālinī||2.14.19||

Translation

महात्मनः highsouled, तस्य भूमिपस्य for that king, ताम् to her, तथा in that way, ब्रुवतः while speaking, चन्द्रनक्षत्रशालिनी resplendent with the Moon and the stars, पुण्या holy, शर्वरी night, प्रभाता dawned.

Meaning

While the king was thus speaking to her (Kaikeyi) that holy night resplendent with the Moon and the stars, the day dawned.

AK-14-20Ayodhya Kanda 14.20

ततः पापसमाचारा कैकेयी पार्थिवं पुनः। उवाच परुषं वाक्यं वाक्यज्ञा रोषमूर्छिता।।2.14.20।।

tatḥ pāpasamācārā kaikeyī pārthivṃ punḥ| uvāca paruṣṃ vākyṃ vākyajñā roṣamūrchitā||2.14.20||

Translation

ततः after that, पापसमाचारा of sinful conduct, वाक्यज्ञा skilful in words, कैकेयी Kaikeyi, रोषमूर्छिता rendered senseless by wrath, पुनः again, पार्थिवम् to the king, परुषम् in harsh, वाक्यम् words, उवाच said.

Meaning

Thereafter, Kaikeyi of sinful conduct and skilful in the use of words, rendered senseless by wrath, again addressing the king in harsh words said:

AK-14-21Ayodhya Kanda 14.21

किमिदं भाषसे राजन्वाक्यं गररुजोपमम्। आनाययितुमक्लिष्टं पुत्रं राममिहार्हसि।।2.14.21।।

kimidṃ bhāṣase rājanvākyṃ gararujopamam| ānāyayitumakliṣṭṃ putrṃ rāmamihārhasi||2.14.21||

Translation

राजन् O king, गररुजोपमम् comparable to the pain of venom, वाक्यम् words, भाषसे are you speaking?, इदं किम् what is this?, अक्लिष्टम् one who is not pained, पुत्रम् son, रामम् Rama, इह here, आनाययितुम् to bring, अर्हसि behoves you.

Meaning

O king, why are you speaking these painful, poisonous words? What is this? It behoves you to summon your son Rama who does not expearience this pain.

AK-14-22Ayodhya Kanda 14.22

स्थाप्य राज्ये मम सुतं कृत्वा रामं वनेचरम्। निस्सपत्नां च मां कृत्वा कृतकृत्यो भविष्यसि।।2.14.22।।

sthāpya rājye mama sutṃ kṛtvā rāmṃ vanecaram| nissapatnāṃ ca māṃ kṛtvā kṛtakṛtyo bhaviṣyasi||2.14.22||

Translation

मम सुतम् my son, राज्ये in the kingdom, स्थाप्य having installed, रामम् Rama, वनेचरम् a forestor, कृत्वा having made, माम् me, निःसपत्नाम् devoid of rivals, कृत्वा having made, कृतकृत्यः भविष्यसि you will have fulfilled your duty.

Meaning

Only after you have installed my son in the kingdom and sent Rama to the forest and made me free from rivals, you shall have your duty fulfiled.

AK-14-23Ayodhya Kanda 14.23

स नुन्न इव तीक्ष्णेन प्रतोदेन हयोत्तमः। राजा प्रचोदितोऽभीक्ष्णं कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत्।।2.14.23।।

sa nunna iva tīkṣṇena pratodena hayottamḥ| rājā pracodito'bhīkṣṇṃ kaikeyīmidamabravīt||2.14.23||

Translation

सः राजा that king (Dasaratha), तीक्ष्णेन with a sharp, प्रतोदेन by the lash, नुन्नः beaten up, हयोत्तमः इव like a horses of the best breed, अभीक्ष्णम् exceedingly, प्रचोदितः incited, कैकेयीम् to Kaikeyi, इदम् this word, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

The king who was very much incited by her words, like a horse of the best breed whipped by the lash, replied to Kaikeyi:

AK-14-24Ayodhya Kanda 14.24

धर्मबन्धेन बध्दोऽस्मि नष्टा च मम चेतना। ज्येष्ठं पुत्रं प्रियं रामं द्रष्टुमिच्छामि धार्मिकम्।।2.14.24।।

dharmabandhena badhdo'smi naṣṭā ca mama cetanā| jyeṣṭhṃ putrṃ priyṃ rāmṃ draṣṭumicchāmi dhārmikam||2.14.24||

Translation

धर्मबन्धेन by bond of righteousness, बद्धः अस्मि I am bound, मम चेतना च my intellect, नष्टा is destroyed, धार्मिकम् virtuous, ज्येष्ठम् eldest, प्रियम् beloved, पुत्रम् son, रामम् Rama, द्रष्टुम् to see, इच्छामि wish.

Meaning

I am bound by bond of righteousness. My intellect is destroyed. I wish to see my beloved, virtuous firstborn, Rama.

AK-14-25-26Ayodhya Kanda 14.25–26 (युग्मम्)

ततः प्रभातां रजनीमुदिते च दिवाकरे। पुण्ये नक्षत्रयोगे च मुहूर्ते च समाहिते।।2.14.25।। वसिष्ठो गुणसम्पन्न श्शिष्यै परिवृतस्तदा। उपगृह्याशु सम्भारान्प्रविवेश पुरोत्तमम्।।2.14.26।।

tatḥ prabhātāṃ rajanīmudite ca divākare| puṇye nakṣatrayoge ca muhūrte ca samāhite||2.14.25|| vasiṣṭho guṇasampanna śśiṣyai parivṛtastadā| upagṛhyāśu sambhārānpraviveśa purottamam||2.14.26||

Translation

ततः then, प्रभाताम् at dawn, रजनीम् the night (gone by), दिवाकरे the Sun, उदिते having arisen, पुण्ये sacred, नक्षत्रयोगे च in favourable conjunction with the star, मुहूर्ते in auspicious time (for coronation), समाहिते having arrived, तदा then, गुणसम्पन्नः virtuous, वसिष्ठः Vasistha शिष्यैः with disciples, परिवृतः surrounded by, सम्भारान् articles (for the ceremony), उपगृह्य having collected, आशु quickly, पुरोत्तमम् best of (the palace), प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

The night dawned. Ths Sun rose. The auspicious time with the sacred star in (favourable) conjunction arrived. The virtuous Vasistha, surrounded by his disciples, soon entered the best of abodes with the articles collected (for the ceremony).

AK-14-27-30Ayodhya Kanda 14.27–30 (कलापकम्)

सिक्तसम्मार्जितपथां पताकोत्तम भूषिताम्। विचित्रकुसुमाकीर्णां नानास्रग्भिर्विराजिताम्।।2.14.27।। संहृष्टमनुजोपेतां समृद्धविपणापणाम्। महोत्सवसमाकीर्णां राघवार्थे समुत्सुकाम्।।2.14.28।। चन्दनागरुधूपैश्च सर्वतः प्रतिधूपिताम्। तां पुरीं समतिक्रम्य पुरन्दरपुरोपमाम्।।।2.14.29।। ददर्शान्तःपुरश्रेष्ठं नानाद्विजगणायुतम्। पौरजानपदाकीर्णं ब्राह्मणैरुपशोभितम्।।2.14.30।। यज्ञविद्भि स्सुसम्पूर्णं सदस्यैः परमद्विजैः।

siktasammārjitapathāṃ patākottama bhūṣitām| vicitrakusumākīrṇāṃ nānāsragbhirvirājitām||2.14.27|| sṃhṛṣṭamanujopetāṃ samṛddhavipaṇāpaṇām| mahotsavasamākīrṇāṃ rāghavārthe samutsukām||2.14.28|| candanāgarudhūpaiśca sarvatḥ pratidhūpitām| tāṃ purīṃ samatikramya purandarapuropamām|||2.14.29|| dadarśāntḥpuraśreṣṭhṃ nānādvijagaṇāyutam| paurajānapadākīrṇṃ brāhmaṇairupaśobhitam||2.14.30|| yajñavidbhi ssusampūrṇṃ sadasyaiḥ paramadvijaiḥ|

Translation

सिक्तसम्मार्जितपथाम् streets swept and sprinkled with water, पताकोत्तमभूषिताम् decorated with excellent flags, विचित्रकुसुमाकीर्णाम् strewn with flowers of variegated colours, नानास्रग्भि: with various flower garlands, विराजिताम् shining with, संहृष्टमनुजोपेताम् filled with people who were rejoicing, समृद्धविपणापणाम् stalls and markets abundantly filled with merchandise, महोत्सवसमाकीर्णाम् full of great festivities, राघवार्थे for the sake of the scion of the Raghus (Rama), समुत्सुकाम् curious, सर्वतः everywhere, चन्दनागुरुधूपैः with sandal, and incense, प्रतिधूपिताम् made fragrant, पुरन्दरपुरोपमाम् resembling Amaravati, the abode of Indra, तां पुरीम् that city, समतिक्रम्य having covered some distance (by walk ), नानाद्विजगणायुतम् with many brahmins, पौरजानपदाकीर्णम् thronged with citizens and villagers, ब्राह्मणैः with brahmins, उपशोभितम् graced by, यज्ञविद्भिः conversant with sacrificial rituals, सदस्यैः with priests, परमद्विजैः with eminent brahmins, सम्पूर्णम् filled with, अन्तःपुरश्रेष्ठम् the best of inner apartments, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

The streets in Ayodhya were swept and sprinkled with water, decorated with excellent flags, strewn with flowers of variegated colours and bedecked with various flower garlands. The streets were crowded with curious people rejoicing at the event. The stalls and markets were abundantly filled with merchandise.The city was full of great festivities. The people were curious to see Rama. Sandalwood and incense were burnt and fragrance pervaded in all the directions. The city resembled Amaravati, the abode of Indra. Vasistha entered the city, covered some distance and beheld the best inner apartment. There he saw host of brahmins, citizens and villagers. The best of inner apartments was graced with brahmins who were experts in sacrificial rituals priests and eminent brahmins.

AK-14-31Ayodhya Kanda 14.31

तदन्तःपुरमासाद्य व्यतिचक्राम तं जनम्।।2.14.31।। वसिष्ठः परमप्रीतः परमर्षिर्विवेश च।

tadantḥpuramāsādya vyaticakrāma tṃ janam||2.14.31|| vasiṣṭhḥ paramaprītḥ paramarṣirviveśa ca|

Translation

परमर्षिः an eminent ascetic, वसिष्ठः Vasistha, परमप्रीतः exceedingly delighted, तत् अन्तःपुरम् that inner apartment, आसाद्य having reached, तं जनम् those people, व्यतिचक्राम passed by, विवेश च also entered.

Meaning

Having reached the inner apartment, the eminent ascetic, Vasistha felt very happy. He passed by the people and entered the inner apartment.

AK-14-32Ayodhya Kanda 14.32

सत्वपश्यद्विनिष्क्रान्तं सुमन्त्रं नाम सारथिम्।।2.14.32।। द्वारे मनुजसिंहस्य सचिवं प्रियदर्शनम्।

satvapaśyadviniṣkrāntṃ sumantrṃ nāma sārathim||2.14.32|| dvāre manujasiṃhasya sacivṃ priyadarśanam|

Translation

सः तु as for him (Vasistha), मनुजसिंहस्य a lion among men (Dasaratha's), द्वारे at the entrance, विनिष्क्रान्तम् coming out, सचिवम् minister, प्रियदर्शनम् handsome, सुमन्त्रं नाम by name Sumantra, सारथिम् charioteer, अपश्यत् saw.

Meaning

Sage Vasistha saw handsome Sumantra, minister to Dasaratha, a lion among the charioteers coming out of the gate.

AK-14-33Ayodhya Kanda 14.33

तमुवाच महातेजा स्सूतपुत्रं विशारदम्।।2.14.33 वसिष्ठः क्षिप्रमाचक्ष्व नृपतेर्मामिहागतम्।

tamuvāca mahātejā ssūtaputrṃ viśāradam||2.14.33 vasiṣṭhḥ kṣipramācakṣva nṛpatermāmihāgatam|

Translation

महातेजाः highly lustrous, वसिष्ठः Vasistha, विशारदम् expert, तं सूतपुत्रम् the son of the charioteer, Sumantra, उवाच (आह) said, माम् me, इह here, आगतम् arrival, नृपतेः to the king, क्षिप्रम् immediately, आचक्ष्व announce.

Meaning

Effulgent Vasistha said to the expert chariotieer Sumantra to inform the king immediately of his arrival.

AK-14-34-41Ayodhya Kanda 14.34–41 (कुलकम्)

Meaning

Here are the pots filled with water from river Ganga and golden vessels with water from the seas. And throne made of udumbara wood for the installation ceremony. All kinds of seeds, perfumes, different kinds of precious stones, honey, curd, ghee, puffed grains, kusha grass (special grass used in rituals), flowers, milk, eight beautiful girls, an intoxicated elephant, a dignified chariot drawn by four horses, a sword, an elegant bow, a palanquin accompanied by bearers, an umbrella resembling the full Moon, two white fans made of Yak's tails, a golden vessel, a palecoloured humped bull, wearing golden gerland, a lion having four strong and large teeth, a mighty horse of the best breed, a throne, tiger skin, fire kindled with faggots, all kinds of musical instruments, courtesans, welldecorated women, preceptors, brahmins, cows, sacred animals and birds, eminent citizens and villagers, groups of merchants all speaking pleasant words and kings -- all are here for Rama's coronation.

AK-14-42Ayodhya Kanda 14.42

त्वरयस्व महाराजं यथा समुदितेऽहनि।।2.14.42।। पुष्ये नक्षत्रयोगे च रामो राज्यमवाप्नुयात्।

tvarayasva mahārājṃ yathā samudite'hani||2.14.42|| puṣye nakṣatrayoge ca rāmo rājyamavāpnuyāt|

Translation

अहनि day, समुदिते commences, (पुण्ये sacred), पुष्ये नक्षत्रयोगे च under conjunction of the Pushya star, रामः Rama, यथा in a way, राज्यम् kingdom, अवाप्नुयात् may obtain, in that way, महाराजम् maharaja (Dasaratha), त्वरयस्व hasten.

Meaning

Hasten the maharaja as Rama has to be installed in the kingdom as soon as the day breaks under the conjunction of the sacred Pushya star.

AK-14-43Ayodhya Kanda 14.43

इति तस्य वच श्श्रुत्वा सूतपुत्रो महात्मनः।।2.14.43।। स्तुवन्नृपतिशार्दूलं प्रविवेश निवेशनम्।

iti tasya vaca śśrutvā sūtaputro mahātmanḥ||2.14.43|| stuvannṛpatiśārdūlṃ praviveśa niveśanam|

Translation

सूतपुत्रः charioteer Sumantra, तस्य महात्मनः of that great Vasistha, इति in this way, वचः words, श्रुत्वा having heard, नृपतिशार्दूलम् tiger among kings, स्तुवन् while praising, निवेशनम् palace, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

Having heard the words of the great Vasistha, charioteer Sumantra entered the inner apartment, singing the praise of this tiger among kings (Dasaratha).

AK-14-44Ayodhya Kanda 14.44

तं तु पूर्वोदितं वृध्दं द्वारस्था राज सम्मतम्।।2.14.44।। न शेकुरभिसंरोध्दुं राज्ञः प्रियचिकीर्षवः।

tṃ tu pūrvoditṃ vṛdhdṃ dvārasthā rāja sammatam||2.14.44|| na śekurabhisṃrodhduṃ rājñḥ priyacikīrṣavḥ|

Translation

द्वारस्था: doorkeepers, राज्ञः of the king, प्रियचिकीर्षवः beloved wellwishers, पूर्वोदितम् who had come earlier, वृद्धम् aged, राजसम्मतम् liked by the king, तं तु him, अभिसंरोद्धुम् to detain, न शेकुः were not able.

Meaning

The doorkeepers, beloved wellwishers of the king, did not detain aged Sumantra who was liked by the king and who had arrived early.

AK-14-45Ayodhya Kanda 14.45

स समीपस्थितो राज्ञस्तामवस्थामजज्ञिवान्।।2.14.45।। वाग्भिः परमतुष्टाभिरभिष्टोतुं प्रचक्रमे।

sa samīpasthito rājñastāmavasthāmajajñivān||2.14.45|| vāgbhiḥ paramatuṣṭābhirabhiṣṭotuṃ pracakrame|

Translation

सः he, राज्ञः of the king, समीपस्थः being near, ताम् that particular, अवस्थाम् state of mind, अजज्ञिवान् was unaware, परमतुष्टाभिः with highly pleasing, वाग्भि: words, अभिष्टोतुम् to praise, प्रचक्रमे commenced.

Meaning

Sumantra approached the king unaware of the state of his mind and commenced praising him in highly pleasing words (as usual).

AK-14-46Ayodhya Kanda 14.46

तत स्सूतो यथाकालं पार्थिवस्य निवेशने।।2.14.46।। सुमन्त्रः प्राञ्जलिर्भूत्वा तुष्टाव जगतीपतिम्।

tata ssūto yathākālṃ pārthivasya niveśane||2.14.46|| sumantrḥ prāñjalirbhūtvā tuṣṭāva jagatīpatim|

Translation

ततः then, सूतः charioteer, सुमन्त्रः Sumantra, पार्थिवस्य king's, निवेशने in the apartment, प्राञ्जलिः भूत्वा with folded hands, यथाकालम् appropriate to the time, जगतीपतिम् lord of the earth, तुष्टाव praised.

Meaning

Thereafter the charioteer Sumantra entered the inner apartment of the king, and with folded hands began singing the praise of the lord of the earth appropriate to the hour.

AK-14-47Ayodhya Kanda 14.47

यथा नन्दति तेजस्वी सागरो भास्करोदये।।2.14.47।। प्रीतः प्रीतेन मनसा तथाऽनन्दघन स्स्वतः।

yathā nandati tejasvī sāgaro bhāskarodaye||2.14.47|| prītḥ prītena manasā tathā'nandaghana ssvatḥ|

Translation

स्वतः inherently, आनन्दघनः full of delight, तेजस्वी mighty, सागरः ocean, भास्करोदये at sunrise, यथा just as that, नन्दति rejoices, तथा in that way, प्रीतेन pleased, मनसा mind, प्रीतः became delighted.

Meaning

Just as the mighty ocean rejoices at sunrise, the inherently cheerful Sumantra became delighted to see the king.

AK-14-48Ayodhya Kanda 14.48

इन्द्रमस्यां तु वेलायामभितुष्टाव मातलिः।।2.14.48।। सोऽजयद्दानवान्सर्वांस्तथा त्वां बोधयाम्यहम्।

indramasyāṃ tu velāyāmabhituṣṭāva mātaliḥ||2.14.48|| so'jayaddānavānsarvāṃstathā tvāṃ bodhayāmyaham|

Translation

मातलिः charioteer, अस्यां वेलायाम् at this point of time, इन्द्रम् Indra, अभितुष्टाव extoled, सः that Indra, सर्वान् all, दानवान् demons, अजयत् conquered, तथा in that way, अहम् I, त्वाम् you, बोधयामि awakening.

Meaning

Just as Indra's charioteer at this time (at dawn) extols him, the conquerer of demons, so do I rouse you (with a song).

AK-14-49Ayodhya Kanda 14.49

वेदास्सहाङ्गविद्याश्च यथाह्यात्मभुवं विभुम्।।2.14.49। ब्रह्माणं बोधयन्त्यद्य तथा त्वां बोधयाम्यहम्।

vedāssahāṅgavidyāśca yathāhyātmabhuvṃ vibhum||2.14.49| brahmāṇṃ bodhayantyadya tathā tvāṃ bodhayāmyaham|

Translation

सहाङ्गविद्याः together with the knowledge of Vedangas, वेदाः Vedas, आत्मभुवम् selfborn, विभुम् lord, ब्रह्माणम् Brahma, यथा as, बोधयन्ति awakening, तथा so, अहम् I, अद्य now, त्वाम् you, बोधयामि rousing.

Meaning

Just as the Vedas and Vedangas awaken the selfborn lord Brahma, so do I awaken you.

AK-14-50Ayodhya Kanda 14.50

आदित्यस्सह चन्द्रेण यथा भूतधरां शुभाम्।।2.14.50।। बोधयत्यद्य पृथिवीं तथा त्वां बोधयाम्यहम्।

ādityassaha candreṇa yathā bhūtadharāṃ śubhām||2.14.50|| bodhayatyadya pṛthivīṃ tathā tvāṃ bodhayāmyaham|

Translation

सह चन्द्रेण along with the Moon, आदित्यः the Sun, भूतधराम् supporter of all beings, शुभाम् auspicious, पृथिवीम् earth, यथा how, बोधयति awakens, तथा in that manner, अहम् I, त्वाम् you, अद्यबोधयामि am awakening you today.

Meaning

As the Sun along with the Moon awakens the auspicious earth which supports all beings, in the same way I am awakening you today.

AK-14-51Ayodhya Kanda 14.51

उत्तिष्ठाशु महाराज कृतकौतुकमङ्गलः।।2.14.51।। विराजमानो वपुषा मेरोरिव दिवाकरः।

uttiṣṭhāśu mahārāja kṛtakautukamaṅgalḥ||2.14.51|| virājamāno vapuṣā meroriva divākarḥ|

Translation

महाराज O maharaja, कृतकौतुकमङ्गलः clad in auspicious robes befitting the festivity, वपुषा in body, विराजमानः shining, मेरोः mount Meru, दिवाकरः इव like the Sun, आशु immediately, उत्तिष्ठ get up.

Meaning

O mighty king get up at once like the Sun rising up mount Meru. Put on your beautiful body auspicious robes befitting the festivity.

AK-14-52Ayodhya Kanda 14.52

सोमसूर्यौ च काकुत्स्थ शिववैश्रवणावपि।।2.14.52।। वरुणश्चाग्निरिन्द्रश्च विजयं प्रदिशन्तु ते।

somasūryau ca kākutstha śivavaiśravaṇāvapi||2.14.52|| varuṇaścāgnirindraśca vijayṃ pradiśantu te|

Translation

काकुत्स्थ O descendant of Kakutstha, सोमसूर्यौ च moon and sun, शिववैश्रवणावपि Siva and Kubera, वरुणः च Varuna, अग्नि: Agni, इन्द्रः च Indra also, ते to you, विजयम् all victory, प्रदिशन्तु bestow.

Meaning

O descendent of Kakutstha, may Moon and Sun, Siva and Kubera, Varuna, Agni and Indra bestow victory on you.

AK-14-53-54Ayodhya Kanda 14.53–54 (युग्मम्)

गता भगवती रात्रिः कृतं कृत्यमिदं तव।।2.14.53।। बुद्ध्यस्व नृपशार्दूल कुरु कार्यमनन्तरम्। उदतिष्ठत रामस्य समग्रमभिषेचनम्।।2.14.54।।

gatā bhagavatī rātriḥ kṛtṃ kṛtyamidṃ tava||2.14.53|| buddhyasva nṛpaśārdūla kuru kāryamanantaram| udatiṣṭhata rāmasya samagramabhiṣecanam||2.14.54||

Translation

नृपशार्दूल a tiger among kings, भगवती holy, रात्रिः night, गता passed, तव your, इदम् this, कृतकृत्यम् tasks accomplished, बुद्ध्यस्व get enlightened, अनन्तरम् thereafter, कार्यम् installation ceremony, कुरु perform, रामस्य Rama's, समग्रम् cimplete, अभिषेचनम् preparations for coronation, उदतिष्ठत are ready.

Meaning

O best among kings the holy night has passed. Having been acquainted with the acts accomplished so far, perform whatever is further necessary for the installation ceremony. All preparations for Rama's coronation ceremony have since been complete.

AK-14-55Ayodhya Kanda 14.55

पौरजानापदैश्चापि नैगमैश्च कृताञ्जलिः। स्वयं वशिष्ठो भगवान्ब्राह्मणै स्सह तिष्ठति।।2.14.55।।

paurajānāpadaiścāpi naigamaiśca kṛtāñjaliḥ| svayṃ vaśiṣṭho bhagavānbrāhmaṇai ssaha tiṣṭhati||2.14.55||

Translation

भगवान् venerable, वसिष्ठः Vasistha, पौरजनपदैश्चापि the inhabitants of town and country, नैगमैश्च by merchants, कृताञ्जलि: greeted with folded hands, ब्राह्मणैः सह along with brahmins, स्वयम् in person, तिष्ठति is waiting.

Meaning

Venerable Vasistha along with inhabitants of the city and countryside including merchants and brahmins with folded hands awaits you.

AK-14-56-57Ayodhya Kanda 14.56–57 (युग्मम्)

क्षिप्रमाज्ञाप्यतां राजन्राघवस्याभिषेचनम्। यथा ह्यपालाः पशवो यथा सेना ह्यनायका।।2.14.56।। यथा चन्द्रं विना रात्रिर्यथा गावो विना वृषम्। एवं हि भविता राष्ट्रं यत्र राजा न दृश्यते।।2.14.57।।

kṣipramājñāpyatāṃ rājanrāghavasyābhiṣecanam| yathā hyapālāḥ paśavo yathā senā hyanāyakā||2.14.56|| yathā candrṃ vinā rātriryathā gāvo vinā vṛṣam| evṃ hi bhavitā rāṣṭrṃ yatra rājā na dṛśyate||2.14.57||

Translation

राजन् O king राघवस्य Rama's, अभिषेचनम् coronation, क्षिप्रम् promptly, आज्ञाप्यताम् be ordered, अपालाः without keeper, पशवः cattle, यथा as, अनायका without commander, सेना army, यथा as, चन्द्रं विना without moon, रात्रिः night, यथा as, वृषं विना without a bull, गावः cows, यथा as, यत्र where, राजा king, न दृश्यते is not seen, राष्ट्रम् kingdom, एवम् just like that, भविता हि will become.

Meaning

O king Rama's installation may be promptly ordered. As herds without herdsman, army without commander, night without the Moon, and cows without a bull, so is a kingdom without a king.

AK-14-58Ayodhya Kanda 14.58

इति तस्य वच श्शृत्वा सान्त्वपूर्वमिवार्थवत्। अभ्यकीर्यत शोकेन भूय एव महीपतिः।।2.14.58।।

iti tasya vaca śśṛtvā sāntvapūrvamivārthavat| abhyakīryata śokena bhūya eva mahīpatiḥ||2.14.58||

Translation

महीपतिः lord of the earth, इति in this way, सान्त्वपूर्वमिव as though in appealing tone, अर्थवत् meaningful, तस्य वचः his words, श्रुत्वा having heard, भूयः एव again, शोकेन in grief, अभ्यकीर्यत was pervaded.

Meaning

Hearing these meaningful words of Sumantra uttered in an appealing tone, the lord of the earth relapsed into grief.

AK-14-59Ayodhya Kanda 14.59

तत स्सराजा तं सूतं सन्नहर्ष स्सुतं प्रति। शोकरक्तेक्षण श्श्रीमानुद्वीक्ष्योवाच धार्मिकः।।2.14.59।। वाक्यैस्तु खलु मर्माणि मम भूयो निकृन्तसि।

tata ssarājā tṃ sūtṃ sannaharṣa ssutṃ prati| śokaraktekṣaṇa śśrīmānudvīkṣyovāca dhārmikḥ||2.14.59|| vākyaistu khalu marmāṇi mama bhūyo nikṛntasi|

Translation

धार्मिकः virtuous, श्रीमान् glorious, सः राजा that king, सुतं प्रति about his son, सन्नहर्षः cheerless, शोकरक्तेक्षणः eyes red with tears, उद्वीक्ष्य looking upwards, तं सूतम् to that charioteer, उवाच said, वाक्यैः with words, मम my, मर्माणि vital parts of body, भूयः (एव) still more, निकृन्तसि are piercing (causing excessive pain).

Meaning

The virtuous and glorious king thinking of his son without cheer looked upward with eyes red with tears and said to the charioteer, You are causing my heart excruciating pain with your words.

AK-14-60Ayodhya Kanda 14.60

सुमन्त्रः करुणं श्रुत्वा दृष्ट्वा दीनं च पार्थिवम्। प्रगृहीताञ्जलिः किञ्चित्तस्माद्देशादपाक्रमत्।।2.14.60।।

sumantrḥ karuṇṃ śrutvā dṛṣṭvā dīnṃ ca pārthivam| pragṛhītāñjaliḥ kiñcittasmāddeśādapākramat||2.14.60||

Translation

सुमन्त्रः Sumantra, करुणम् sorrowful words, श्रुत्वा having heard, दीनम् wretched, पार्थिवम् king, दृष्ट्वा च having seen, प्रगृहीताञ्जलिः with palms folded, तस्मात् देशात् from that place, किञ्चित् a little distance, अपाक्रमत् moved away.

Meaning

Having heard the sorrowful words of the king and having seen his wretched state Sumantra with palms folded moved away a little from the place.

AK-14-61Ayodhya Kanda 14.61

यदा वक्तुं स्वयं दैन्यान्न शशाक महीपतिः।।2.14.61।। तदा सुमन्त्रं मन्त्रज्ञा कैकेयी प्रत्युवाच ह।

yadā vaktuṃ svayṃ dainyānna śaśāka mahīpatiḥ||2.14.61|| tadā sumantrṃ mantrajñā kaikeyī pratyuvāca ha|

Translation

महीपतिः lord of the earth (the king), दैन्यात् due to the wretched conditon, स्वयम् personally, वक्तुम् to speak out, यदा when, न शशाक was not able, तदा then, मन्त्रज्ञा कैकेयी Kaikeyi, सुमन्त्रम् to Sumantra, प्रत्युवाच ह said in reply.

Meaning

When the king himself in that wretched state was not able to speak to Sumantra, crafty Kaikeyi said to him in reply:

AK-14-62Ayodhya Kanda 14.62

सुमन्त्र राजा रजनीं रामहर्षसमुत्सुकः।।2.14.62।। प्रजागरपरिश्रान्तो निद्राया वशमुपेयिवान्।

sumantra rājā rajanīṃ rāmaharṣasamutsukḥ||2.14.62|| prajāgarapariśrānto nidrāyā vaśamupeyivān|

Translation

सुमन्त्र O Sumantra, राजा king, रामहर्षसमुत्सुकः excited with joy in connection with Rama's coronation, रजनीम् entire night, प्रजागरपरिश्रान्तः weary with keeping awake all night, निद्रावशम् overpowered with sleep, उपेयिवान् is affected.

Meaning

O Sumantra, excited with joy on account of the (proposed) installation of Rama, the king did not have a wink of sleep all night. He is weary and overpowered with sleep.

AK-14-63Ayodhya Kanda 14.63

तद्गच्छ त्वरितं सूत राजपुत्रं यशस्विनम्।।2.14.63।। राममानय भद्रं ते नात्र कार्या विचारणा।

tadgaccha tvaritṃ sūta rājaputrṃ yaśasvinam||2.14.63|| rāmamānaya bhadrṃ te nātra kāryā vicāraṇā|

Translation

तत् so, सूत O charioteer (Sumantra), त्वरितम् quickly, गच्छ go, यशस्विनम् illustrious, राजपुत्रम् prince, रामम् Rama, आनय bring, ते to you, भद्रम् gentle, अत्र in this matter, विचारणा hesitation, न कार्या need not be done.

Meaning

So, O Sumantra quickly fetch the gentle, illustrious prince Rama. Let there be no hesitation in this matter.

AK-14-64Ayodhya Kanda 14.64

स मन्यमानः कल्याणं हृदयेन ननन्द च।।2.14.64।। निर्जगाम च सम्प्रीत्या त्वरितो राजशासनात्।

sa manyamānḥ kalyāṇṃ hṛdayena nananda ca||2.14.64|| nirjagāma ca samprītyā tvarito rājaśāsanāt|

Translation

सः he, हृदयेन at heart, कल्याणम् auspicious event, मन्यमानः thinking, ननन्द च felt happy, राजशासनात् at the royal command, त्वरितः swiftly, सम्प्रीत्याः rejoiced, निर्जगाम च went away.

Meaning

Thinking that an auspicious event will take place, he rejoiced at heart and in obedience to royal order, left at once.

AK-14-65Ayodhya Kanda 14.65

सुमन्त्रश्चिन्तयामास त्वरितं चोदितस्तया।।2.14.65।। व्यक्तं रामोऽभिषेकार्थमिहायास्यति धर्मवित्।

sumantraścintayāmāsa tvaritṃ coditastayā||2.14.65|| vyaktṃ rāmo'bhiṣekārthamihāyāsyati dharmavit|

Translation

तया by her, चोदितः urged, सुमन्त्रः Sumantra, चिन्तयामास thought over, धर्मवित् a knower of righteousness, रामः Rama, व्यक्तम् definitely, अभिषेकार्थम् for installation, इह here, आयास्यति he will come.

Meaning

Urged by Kaikeyi, Sumantra thought 'Righteous Rama will definitely come here for the purpose of installation'.

AK-14-66Ayodhya Kanda 14.66

इति सूतो मतिं कृत्वा हर्षेण महताऽऽवृतः।।2.14.66।। निर्जगाम महाबाहो राघवस्य दिदृक्षया।

iti sūto matiṃ kṛtvā harṣeṇa mahatā''vṛtḥ||2.14.66|| nirjagāma mahābāho rāghavasya didṛkṣayā|

Translation

सूतः the charioteer, इति in this way, मतिं कृत्वा having thought, महता हर्षेण with great delight, वृतः filled, महाबाहोः one with mighty arms, राघवस्य Rama's, दिदृक्षया with an intention to see Rama, निर्जगाम came out.

Meaning

So thought the charioteer and filled with great delight left (the inner apartment), eager to see the mightyarmed Rama.

AK-14-67Ayodhya Kanda 14.67

सागरह्रदसङ्काशात्सुमन्त्रोऽन्तःपुराच्छुभात्।।2.14.67।। निष्क्रम्य जनसम्बाधं ददर्श द्वारमग्रतः।

sāgarahradasaṅkāśātsumantro'ntḥpurācchubhāt||2.14.67|| niṣkramya janasambādhṃ dadarśa dvāramagratḥ|

Translation

सुमन्त्रः Sumantra, सागरह्रदसङ्काशात् from a place which looked like deep waters of the sea, शुभात् auspicious, अन्तःपुरात् inner apartment, निष्क्रम्य having departed, अग्रतः ahead of him, जनसम्बाधम् thronged with people, द्वारम् gate, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Sumantra, departed from the auspcious inner apartment which looked like the deep waters of the sea and saw people thronging the gate.

AK-14-68Ayodhya Kanda 14.68

ततः पुरस्तात्सहसा विनिर्गतो महीपतीन्द्वारगतो विलोकयन्। ददर्श पौरान्विविधान्महाधना नुपस्थितान्द्वारमुपेत्य विष्ठितान्।।2.14.68।।

tatḥ purastātsahasā vinirgato mahīpatīndvāragato vilokayan| dadarśa paurānvividhānmahādhanā nupasthitāndvāramupetya viṣṭhitān||2.14.68||

Translation

ततः then, सहसा immediately, पुरस्तात् forward, विनिर्गतः moving, द्वारगतः having reached the gate, विलोकयन् seeing, द्वारम् gate, उपेत्य having approached, विष्ठितान् waiting, महीपतीन् kings, उपस्थितान् having arrived, महाधनान् wealthy people, (विविधान्) पौरान् citizens, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

Then Sumantra hastened towards the gate where he saw kings, wealthy people and citizens who had already arrived and waiting there. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे चतुर्दशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fourteenth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
