AK-13-1-2Ayodhya Kanda 13.1–2 (युग्मम्)

अतदर्हं महाराजं शयानमतथोचितम्। ययातिमिव पुण्यान्ते देवलोकात्परिच्युतम्।।2.13.1।। अनर्थरूपा सिद्धार्था ह्यभीता भयदर्शिनी। पुनराकारयामास तमेव वरमङ्गना।।2.13.2।।

atadarhṃ mahārājṃ śayānamatathocitam| yayātimiva puṇyānte devalokātparicyutam||2.13.1|| anartharūpā siddhārthā hyabhītā bhayadarśinī| punarākārayāmāsa tameva varamaṅganā||2.13.2||

Translation

अनर्थरूपा misfortune incarnate, सिद्धार्था with her purpose fulfilled, अङ्गना that woman, अतदर्हम् who did not merit such treatment, अतथोचितम् who was not accustomed to that (treatment), पुण्यान्ते after exhausting the merits (earned), देवलोकात् from the heaven, परिच्युतम् fallen, ययातिमिव like Yayati, शयानम् lying, महाराजम् to the maharaja (Dasaratha), अभीता fearless, भयदर्शिनी displaying fear, पुनः again, तमेव वरम् those very boons, आकारयामास urged.

Meaning

The maharaja lying on the floor resembled (king) Yayati fallen from heaven after his merits (earned earlier) were exhausted. He neither deserved nor was accustomed to such (humiliating) treatment. Fearless Kaikeyi ,the incarnate of misfortune having accomplished her purpose, displyaing feigned fear, urged the king again (without inhibition), about the boons:

AK-13-3Ayodhya Kanda 13.3

त्वं कत्थसे महाराज सत्यवादी दृढव्रतः। मम चेमं वरं कस्माद्विधारयितुमिच्छसि।।2.13.3।।

tvṃ katthase mahārāja satyavādī dṛḍhavratḥ| mama cemṃ varṃ kasmādvidhārayitumicchasi||2.13.3||

Translation

महाराज O maharaja, सत्यवादी truthful, दृढव्रतः steadfast in your vows, त्वम् you, कत्थसे used to boast of, मम my, इमं वरम् this boon, कस्मात् why, विधारयितुम् to avoid, इच्छसि are seeking?

Meaning

O great king you used to boast that you always speak the truth and are steadfast in your vows. Why are you now seeking to avoid granting me this boon?

AK-13-4Ayodhya Kanda 13.4

एवमुक्तस्तु कैकेय्या राजा दशरथस्तदा। प्रत्युवाच ततः क्रुद्धो मुहूर्तं विह्वलन्निव।।2.13.4।।

evamuktastu kaikeyyā rājā daśarathastadā| pratyuvāca tatḥ kruddho muhūrtṃ vihvalanniva||2.13.4||

Translation

तदा then, कैकेय्या by Kaikeyi, एवम् in this way, उक्तः having said, राजा दशरथः king Dasaratha, क्रुद्धः in indignation, मुहूर्तम् for a while, विह्वलन्निव as if in a state of delirium, ततः afterwards, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

Thus addressed by Kaikeyi, king Dasaratha flew into a temper for a while, and then as if in a state of delirium, replied:

AK-13-5Ayodhya Kanda 13.5

मृते मयि गते रामे वनं मनुजपुङ्गवे। हन्तानार्ये ममामित्रे सकामा सुखिनी भव।।2.13.5।।

mṛte mayi gate rāme vanṃ manujapuṅgave| hantānārye mamāmitre sakāmā sukhinī bhava||2.13.5||

Translation

मनुजपुङ्गवे foremost among men, रामे Rama, वनंगते exiled, मयि me, मृते being dead, अनार्ये O ignoble woman मम अमित्रे my enemy, सकामा having satisfied your desire, सुखिनी भव be happy, हन्त alas.

Meaning

Alas O ignoble woman, my enemy, your desire would be fulfilled after Rama, the foremost among men is exiled and I am dead. You will be happy thereafter

AK-13-6Ayodhya Kanda 13.6

स्वर्गेऽपि खलु रामस्य कुशलं दैवतैरहम्। प्रत्यादेशादभिहितं धारयिष्ये कथं बत।।2.13.6।।

svarge'pi khalu rāmasya kuśalṃ daivatairaham| pratyādeśādabhihitṃ dhārayiṣye kathṃ bata||2.13.6||

Translation

स्वर्गेऽपि even in heaven, अहम् I, प्रत्यादेशात् with repudiation, अभिहितम् stated, रामस्य about Rama's, कुशलम् welfare, दैवतैः by gods, कथं खलु how, धारयिष्ये will I hold (convince), बत what a catastrophe.

Meaning

Even in heaven when the gods enquire about the welfare of Rama how will I convince them about his banishment repudiating the fact? What a catastrophe

AK-13-7Ayodhya Kanda 13.7

कैकेय्याः प्रियकामेन रामः प्रव्राजितो मया। यदि सत्यं ब्रवीम्येतत्तदसत्यं भविष्यति।।2.13.7।।

kaikeyyāḥ priyakāmena rāmḥ pravrājito mayā| yadi satyṃ bravīmyetattadasatyṃ bhaviṣyati||2.13.7||

Translation

कैकेय्याः of Kaikeyi, प्रियकामेन for the pleasure, मया by me, रामः Rama, प्रव्राजितः was sent (to the forest), एतत् this, सत्यम् truth, ब्रवीमि यदि if I tell, तत् that, असत्यम् untruth, भविष्यति will become.

Meaning

If I tell the truth, 'To please Kaikeyi I have sent Rama to the forest', none will believe it and will consider it untruth.

AK-13-8Ayodhya Kanda 13.8

अपुत्रेण मया पुत्रश्श्रमेण महता महान्। रामो लब्धो महाबाहु स्सकथं त्यज्यते मया।।2.13.8।।

aputreṇa mayā putraśśrameṇa mahatā mahān| rāmo labdho mahābāhu ssakathṃ tyajyate mayā||2.13.8||

Translation

अपुत्रेण without sons, मया by me, महता with great, श्रमेण with effort, महान् mighty, महाबाहुः mightyarmed, रामः Rama, पुत्रः as son, लब्ध: obtained, सः he, मया by me, कथम् how, त्यज्यते can be abandoned.

Meaning

When I was issueless, I obtained mighty and valiant Rama with great effort as a son. How can I banish him?

AK-13-9Ayodhya Kanda 13.9

शूरश्च कृतविद्यश्च जितक्रोधो क्षमापरः। कथं कमलपत्राक्षो मया रामो विवास्यते।।2.13.9।।

śūraśca kṛtavidyaśca jitakrodho kṣamāparḥ| kathṃ kamalapatrākṣo mayā rāmo vivāsyate||2.13.9||

Translation

शूरः brave, कृतविद्यश्च learned also, जितक्रोधः one who has subdued anger, क्षमापरः forgiving, कमलपत्राक्षः one with eyes resembling lotus petals, रामः Rama, मया by me, कथम् how, विवास्यते can be sent on exile.

Meaning

How can I exile Rama, whose eyes resemble lotus petals, who is learned, who has subdued his anger and who is always full of forgiveness?

AK-13-10Ayodhya Kanda 13.10

कथमिन्दीवरश्यामं दीर्घबाहुं महाबलम्। अभिराममहं रामं प्रेषयिष्यामि दण्डकान्।।2.13.10।।

kathamindīvaraśyāmṃ dīrghabāhuṃ mahābalam| abhirāmamahṃ rāmṃ preṣayiṣyāmi daṇḍakān||2.13.10||

Translation

इन्दीवरश्यामम् complexion resembling blue lotus, दीर्घबाहुम् one with long arms, महाबलम् one with immense strength, अभिरामम् a charming person, रामम् to Rama, अहम् I, दण्डकान् to Dandaka, कथम् how, प्रेषयिष्यामि can despatch.

Meaning

Rama with a charming personality has a complexion like the blue lotus. He has long arms (with immense strength). How can I banish him to Dandaka forest?

AK-13-11Ayodhya Kanda 13.11

सुखानामुचितस्यैव दुःखैरनुचितस्य च। दुखं नामानुपश्येयं कथं रामस्य धीमतः।।2.13.11।।

sukhānāmucitasyaiva duḥkhairanucitasya ca| dukhṃ nāmānupaśyeyṃ kathṃ rāmasya dhīmatḥ||2.13.11||

Translation

सुखानाम् happiness, उचितस्य deserves, दुःखैः sufferings, अनुचितस्य च does not deserve, धीमतः sagacious, रामस्य to Rama, दुःखम् distress, कथं नाम how, अनुपश्येयम् can I bear to see

Meaning

Rama deserves happiness not suffering. How can I bear to see such a sagacious Rama undergoing distress?

AK-13-12Ayodhya Kanda 13.12

यदि दुःखमकृत्वाऽद्य मम संक्रमणं भवेत्। अदुःखार्हस्य रामस्य तत स्सुखमवाप्नुयाम्।।2.13.12।।

yadi duḥkhamakṛtvā'dya mama sṃkramaṇṃ bhavet| aduḥkhārhasya rāmasya tata ssukhamavāpnuyām||2.13.12||

Translation

अदुःखार्हस्य one who does not deserve suffering, रामस्य of Rama, दुःखम् sorrow, अकृत्वा not inflicting, मम my, संक्रमणम् reaching death, अद्य now, भवेत् if it happens, ततः therefrom, सुखम् happiness, अवाप्नुयाम् I shall experience.

Meaning

If death comes to me right now I shall be very happy because I will not have to inflict suffering on Rama who does not deserve it.

AK-13-13Ayodhya Kanda 13.13

नृशंसे पापसङ्कल्पे रामं सत्यपराक्रमम्। किं विप्रियेण कैकेयि प्रियं योजयसे मम।।2.13.13।। अकीर्तिरतुला लोके ध्रुवं परिभवश्च मे।

nṛśṃse pāpasaṅkalpe rāmṃ satyaparākramam| kiṃ vipriyeṇa kaikeyi priyṃ yojayase mama||2.13.13|| akīrtiratulā loke dhruvṃ paribhavaśca me|

Translation

नृशंसे O cruel one पापसङ्कल्पे O woman of evil intentions कैकेयि Kaikeyi, मम my, प्रियम् dear, सत्यपराक्रमम् truth as prowess, रामम् to Rama, विप्रियेण harmful, किम् why, योजयसे arranging, लोके in this world, मे to me, अतुला unequalled, अकीर्तिः infamy, परिभवश्च disgrace, ध्रुवं this is inevitable.

Meaning

O cruel, malevolent Kaikeyi, why do you propose such a harmful act against Rama who has truth as his prowess and who is so dear to me? Certainly, you will get unparalleled infamy and disgrace in this world.

AK-13-14Ayodhya Kanda 13.14

तथा विलपतस्तस्य परिभ्रमितचेतसः।।2.13.14।। अस्तमभ्यगमत्सूर्यो रजनी चाभ्यवर्तत।

tathā vilapatastasya paribhramitacetasḥ||2.13.14|| astamabhyagamatsūryo rajanī cābhyavartata|

Translation

परिभ्रमितचेतसः with a whirling mind, तस्य of that Dasaratha, तथा in that way, विलपतः lamenting सूर्यः the Sun, अस्तमभ्यगमत् set, रजनी च night also, अभ्यवर्तत च fell.

Meaning

While Dasaratha was thus lamenting with a distracted mind, the Sun set and night fell.

AK-13-15Ayodhya Kanda 13.15

सा त्रियामा तथार्त्तस्य चन्द्रमण्डलमण्डिता।।2.13.15।। राज्ञो विलपमानस्य न व्यभासत शर्वरी।

sā triyāmā tathārttasya candramaṇḍalamaṇḍitā||2.13.15|| rājño vilapamānasya na vyabhāsata śarvarī|

Translation

तथा in that way, आर्त्तस्य of the anguished, विलपमानस्य while he was lamenting, राज्ञः of the king, त्रियामा with three yamas, सा that, शर्वरी night, चन्द्रमण्डलमण्डिता adorned with the lunar orb, न व्यभासत did not shine.

Meaning

For the king who was in deep anguish and in tears the night appeared dark even though it was adorned with the lunar orb.

AK-13-16Ayodhya Kanda 13.16

तथैवोष्णं विनिश्वस्य वृद्धो दशरथो नृपः।।2.13.16।। विललापार्तवद्युखं गगनासक्तलोचनः।

tathaivoṣṇṃ viniśvasya vṛddho daśaratho nṛpḥ||2.13.16|| vilalāpārtavadyukhṃ gaganāsaktalocanḥ|

Translation

वृद्धः aged, दशरथः नृपः king Dasaratha, तथैव in that way only, उष्णम् hot, विनिश्श्वस्य heaving sighs, आर्तवत् like a sick man, गगनासक्तलोचनः looked at the sky with a fixed gaze, दुःखम् pitiably, विललाप lamented.

Meaning

The old king Dasaratha, heaving hot sighs, started lamenting pitiably fixing his gaze at the sky like the sick:

AK-13-17Ayodhya Kanda 13.17

न प्रभातं त्वयेच्छामि निशे नक्षत्रभूषणे।।2.13.17।। क्रियतां मे दया भद्रे मयाऽयं रचितोऽञ्जलिः।

na prabhātṃ tvayecchāmi niśe nakṣatrabhūṣaṇe||2.13.17|| kriyatāṃ me dayā bhadre mayā'yṃ racito'ñjaliḥ|

Translation

नक्षत्रभूषणे adorned with stars, भद्रे O auspiciouslooking one, निशे O Night त्वया by you, प्रभातम् dawn, न इच्छामि I do not desire, मे to me, दया kindness, क्रियताम् be done, मया by me, अयम् this, अञ्जलिः with palms folded, रचितः is held.

Meaning

'O auspiciouslooking Night adorned with stars, I do not wish to see the dawn. O gentle night, be kind to me I pray with folded hands'.

AK-13-18Ayodhya Kanda 13.18

अथवा गम्यतां शीघ्रं नाहमिच्छामि निर्घृणाम्।।2.13.18।। नृशंसां कैकयीं द्रष्टुं यत्कृते व्यसनं महत्।

athavā gamyatāṃ śīghrṃ nāhamicchāmi nirghṛṇām||2.13.18|| nṛśṃsāṃ kaikayīṃ draṣṭuṃ yatkṛte vyasanṃ mahat|

Translation

अथवा or, शीघ्रम् quickly, गम्यताम् let it go, यत्कृते for whose sake, महत् great, व्यसनम् misfortune, निर्घृणाम् merciless, नृशंसाम् malicious, कैकयीम् Kaikeyi, द्रष्टुम् to look at, अहम् I, नेच्छामि do not desire.

Meaning

'Or, pass off quickly. I do not want to see this merciless, malicious Kaikeyi who is the cause of this great misfortune'.

AK-13-19Ayodhya Kanda 13.19

एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजा कैकेयीं संयताञ्जलिः।।2.13.19।। प्रसादयामास पुनः कैकेयीं चेदमब्रवीत्।

evamuktvā tato rājā kaikeyīṃ sṃyatāñjaliḥ||2.13.19|| prasādayāmāsa punḥ kaikeyīṃ cedamabravīt|

Translation

राजा king, एवम् thus, उक्त्वा having said, ततः then, संयताञ्जलिः with folded hands, कैकेयीम् to Kaikeyi, प्रसादयामास appeased, पुनः again, कैकेयीम् to Kaikeyi, इदं च this word also, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Having said this, the king spoke again with folded hands to Kaikeyi in order to appease her:

AK-13-20Ayodhya Kanda 13.20

साधु वृत्तस्य दीनस्य त्वद्गतस्य गतायुषः।।2.1.20।। प्रसादः क्रियतां देवि भद्रे राज्ञो विशेषतः।

sādhu vṛttasya dīnasya tvadgatasya gatāyuṣḥ||2.1.20|| prasādḥ kriyatāṃ devi bhadre rājño viśeṣatḥ|

Translation

भद्रे O gentle lady, देवि O queen, साधुवृत्तस्य having good conduct, दीनस्य of this wretch, त्वद्गतस्य devoted to you, गतायुषः of a man whose life is almost over, विशेषतः especially, राज्ञः as a king, प्रसादः favour, क्रियताम् let it be done.

Meaning

O gentle queen, I am an old man and my life is almost over. I am a wretch devoted to you. I am a man of good conduct. Do me this favour especially as I am king.

AK-13-21Ayodhya Kanda 13.21

शून्ये न खलु सुश्रोणि मयेदं समुदाहृतम्।।2.13.21।। कुरु साधु प्रसादं मे बाले सहृदया ह्यसि।

śūnye na khalu suśroṇi mayedṃ samudāhṛtam||2.13.21|| kuru sādhu prasādṃ me bāle sahṛdayā hyasi|

Translation

सुश्रोणि fairhipped lady, मया by me, इदम् all this, शून्ये in the sky, न खलु समुदाहृतम् indeed has not been told, बाले O young lady, मे to me, साधु very well, प्रसादम् favour, कुरु do, सहृदया असि हि surely you are kindhearted.

Meaning

O lady with fair hips, I hope whatever I have said has not been a cry in the (empty) sky. O young lady show me this favour. Surely you are kindhearted.

AK-13-22Ayodhya Kanda 13.22

प्रसीद देवि रामोमेत्वद्दत्तं राज्यमव्यम्।।2.13.22।। लभतामसितापाङ्गे यशः परमवाप्नु हि।

prasīda devi rāmometvaddattṃ rājyamavyam||2.13.22|| labhatāmasitāpāṅge yaśḥ paramavāpnu hi|

Translation

देवि O queen, प्रसीद be pleased, रामः Rama, त्वद्दत्तम् given by you, मे राज्यम् my kingdom, लभताम् will receive, असितापाङ्गे O one with dark eyelashes, परम् very great, यशः fame, अवाप्नुहि acquire.

Meaning

O queen with beautiful, dark eyelashes, show pity on me. Let Rama receive this unbounded kingdom through you and you acquire fame.

AK-13-23Ayodhya Kanda 13.23

मम रामस्य लोकस्य गुरूणां भरतस्य च।।2.13.23।। प्रियमेतद्गुरुश्रोणि कुरु चारुमुखेक्षणे

mama rāmasya lokasya gurūṇāṃ bharatasya ca||2.13.23|| priyametadguruśroṇi kuru cārumukhekṣaṇe

Translation

गुरुश्रोणि O one with heavy hips चारुमुखेक्षणे having charming eyes and a beautiful face, मम for me, रामस्य of Rama, लोकस्य of the world, गुरूणाम् to all the preceptors, भरतस्य च of Bharata also, प्रियम् pleasing, एतत् this act, कुरु do.

Meaning

O lady with heavy hips, charming eyes and a beautiful face, do this favour to me, to Rama, to the world, to all the preceptors and to Bharata too.

AK-13-24Ayodhya Kanda 13.24

विशुद्धभावस्य सुदुष्टभावा ताम्रेक्षणस्याश्रुकलस्य राज्ञः। श्रुत्वा विचित्रं करुणं विलापं भर्तुर्नृशंसा न चकार वाक्यम्।।2.13.24।।

viśuddhabhāvasya suduṣṭabhāvā tāmrekṣaṇasyāśrukalasya rājñḥ| śrutvā vicitrṃ karuṇṃ vilāpṃ bharturnṛśṃsā na cakāra vākyam||2.13.24||

Translation

सुदुष्टभावा a lady with wicked thoughts, नृशंसा heartless, विशुद्धभावस्य of pure (kind) feeling, ताम्रेक्षणस्य of one with eyes rendered red, अश्रुकलस्य filled with tears, भर्तुः husband, राज्ञः king's, विचित्रम् in various ways, करुणं विलापम् piteous wailing, श्रुत्वा having heard, वाक्यं that word, न चकार did not obey.

Meaning

The king with a clean heart, whose eyes had been rendered red with weeping wailed piteously. Even after hearing it, that malicious woman full of wicked thoughts did not act upon his word.

AK-13-25Ayodhya Kanda 13.25

ततस्स राजा पुनरेव मूर्छितः प्रियामतुष्टां प्रतिकूलभाषिणीम्। समीक्ष्य पुत्रस्य विवासनं प्रति क्षितौ विसंज्ञो निपपात दुखितः।।2.13.25।।

tatassa rājā punareva mūrchitḥ priyāmatuṣṭāṃ pratikūlabhāṣiṇīm| samīkṣya putrasya vivāsanṃ prati kṣitau visṃjño nipapāta dukhitḥ||2.13.25||

Translation

पुत्रस्य son's, विवासनं प्रति about banishment, प्रतिकूलभाषिणीम् speaking the opposite, अतुष्टाम् not satisfied, प्रियाम् beloved wife, समीक्ष्य having seen, दुःखितः struck with grief, ततः thereafter, सः राजा that king, पुनरेव again, मूर्छितः having fainted, विसंज्ञः losing consciousness, क्षितौ on the ground (floor), निपपात fell down.

Meaning

Seeing his dear wife not pleased (despite his pleadings) and urging him, to the contrary, for the banishment of his son, the king overcome with grief fell down unconscious on the floor.

AK-13-26Ayodhya Kanda 13.26

इतीव राज्ञो व्यथितस्य सा निशा जगाम घोरं श्वसतो मनस्विनः विबोध्यमानः प्रतिबोधनं तदा निवारयामास स राजसत्तमः।।2.13.26।।

itīva rājño vyathitasya sā niśā jagāma ghorṃ śvasato manasvinḥ vibodhyamānḥ pratibodhanṃ tadā nivārayāmāsa sa rājasattamḥ||2.13.26||

Translation

इतीव like this, व्यथितस्य afflicted with grief, मनस्विनः of that highminded, राज्ञः of king, घोरम् dreadful, श्वसतः heaving deep sighs, सा निशा that night, जगाम passed off, सः राजसत्तमः that eminent king, विबोध्यमानः being awakened (by panegyrists), तदा then, प्रतिबोधनम् not to awaken, निवारयामास stopped.

Meaning

The night passed off with the highminded king lamenting this way and heaving deep sighs. When he got up, the eminent king stopped (the panegyrists) awakening him. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे त्रयोदशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the thirteenth sarga of Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
