AK-113-1Ayodhya Kanda 113.1

तत श्शिरसि कृत्वा तु पादुके भरतस्तदा। आरुरोह रथं हृष्टः शत्रुघ्नेन समन्वितः।।2.113.1।।

tata śśirasi kṛtvā tu pāduke bharatastadā| āruroha rathṃ hṛṣṭḥ śatrughnena samanvitḥ||2.113.1||

Translation

ततः thereafter, तदा then, भरतः Bharata, पादुके sandals, शिरसि upon his head, कृत्वा having placed, हृष्टः in delight, शत्रुघ्नेन with Satrughna, समन्वितः accompanied by, रथम् chariot, आरुरोह boarded.

Meaning

Then Bharata accompanied by Satrughna, placing the sandals on his head in delight, boarded the chariot.

AK-113-2Ayodhya Kanda 113.2

वसिष्ठो वामदेवश्च जाबालिश्च दृढव्रतः। अग्रतः प्रययु स्सर्वे मन्त्रिणो मन्त्रपूजिताः।।2.113.2।।

vasiṣṭho vāmadevaśca jābāliśca dṛḍhavratḥ| agratḥ prayayu ssarve mantriṇo mantrapūjitāḥ||2.113.2||

Translation

वसिष्ठः Vasistha, वामदेवश्च Vamadeva, दृढव्रतः of rigid penance, जाबालिश्च Jabali, मन्त्रपूजिताः honoured for their counselling, सर्वे मन्त्रिणः all the ministers, अग्रतः in the forefront, प्रययुः proceeded.

Meaning

Vasishta, Vamadeva, Jabali of rigorous penance and all the ministers honoured for their counsel proceeded ahead.

AK-113-3Ayodhya Kanda 113.3

मन्दाकिनीं नदीं रम्यां प्राङ्मुखास्ते ययुस्तदा। प्रदक्षिणं च कुर्वाणाश्चित्रकूटं महागिरिम्।।2.113.3।।

mandākinīṃ nadīṃ ramyāṃ prāṅmukhāste yayustadā| pradakṣiṇṃ ca kurvāṇāścitrakūṭṃ mahāgirim||2.113.3||

Translation

तदा then, ते they, चित्रकूटं महागिरिम् mighty mountain, Chitrakuta, प्रदक्षिणम् circumambulation, कुर्वाणाः doings, प्राङ्मुखाः facing eastward, मन्दाकिनीम् river Mandakini, रम्याम् charming, नदीम् to river, ययुः proceeded.

Meaning

All of them circumambulated the mighty mountain Chitrakuta and proceeded east towards the charming river Mandakini.

AK-113-4Ayodhya Kanda 113.4

पश्यन्धातुसहस्राणि रम्याणि विविधानि च। प्रययौ तस्य पार्श्वेन ससैन्यो भरतस्तदा।।2.113.4।।

paśyandhātusahasrāṇi ramyāṇi vividhāni ca| prayayau tasya pārśvena sasainyo bharatastadā||2.113.4||

Translation

तदा then, भरतः Bharata, रम्याणि beautiful, विविधानि various, धातुसहस्राणि a thousand varieties of minerals, पश्यन् beholding, ससैन्यः with army, तस्य that mountain's, पार्श्वे alongside, प्रययौ went.

Meaning

Beholding a thousand varieties of beautiful minerals, Bharata with his army proceeded alongside the mountain.

AK-113-5Ayodhya Kanda 113.5

अदूराच्चित्रकूटस्य ददर्श भरतस्तदा। आश्रमं यत्र स मुनिर्भरद्वाजः कृतालयः।।2.113.5।।

adūrāccitrakūṭasya dadarśa bharatastadā| āśramṃ yatra sa munirbharadvājḥ kṛtālayḥ||2.113.5||

Translation

तदा then, भरतः Bharata, चित्रकूटस्य of Chitrakuta, अदूरात् not far from there, यत्र where, मुनिः sage, सः भरद्वाजः that Bharadwaja, कृतालयः made his residence, आश्रमम् hermitage, ददर्श beheld.

Meaning

Not far from Chitrakuta mountain, Bharata beheld a hermitage where sage Bharadwaja resided.

AK-113-6Ayodhya Kanda 113.6

स तमाश्रममागम्य भरद्वाजस्य बुद्धिमान्। अवतीर्य रथात्पादौ ववन्दे भरतस्तदा।।2.113.6।।

sa tamāśramamāgamya bharadvājasya buddhimān| avatīrya rathātpādau vavande bharatastadā||2.113.6||

Translation

तदा then, बुद्धिमान् sagacious, सः भरतः that Bharata, भरद्वाजस्य Bharadwaja's, तम् आश्रमम् that hermitage, आगम्य having reached, रथात् from the chariot, अवितीर्य alighting, पादौ at his feet, ववन्दे prostrated.

Meaning

On approaching the hermitage of sage Bharadwaja, Bharata alighted from the chariot, and prostrated at his feet.

AK-113-7Ayodhya Kanda 113.7

ततो हृष्टो भरद्वाजो भरतं वाक्यमब्रवीत्। अपि कृत्यं कृतं तात रामेण च समागतम्।।2.113.7।।

tato hṛṣṭo bharadvājo bharatṃ vākyamabravīt| api kṛtyṃ kṛtṃ tāta rāmeṇa ca samāgatam||2.113.7||

Translation

ततः then, हृष्टः delighted, भरद्वाजः Bharadwaja, भरतम् to Bharata, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said, तात O child, कृत्यम् the task, अपि कृतम् has it been accomplished?, रामेण च with Rama, अपि समागतम् have you met?

Meaning

Then Bhardwaja asked Bharata in delight, My son, have you accomplished your task? Did you meet Rama?

AK-113-8Ayodhya Kanda 113.8

एवमुक्त स्स तु ततो भरद्वाजेन धीमता। प्रत्युवाच भरद्वाजं भरतो धर्मवत्सलः।।2.113.8।।

evamukta ssa tu tato bharadvājena dhīmatā| pratyuvāca bharadvājṃ bharato dharmavatsalḥ||2.113.8||

Translation

ततः thereafter, धीमता by the wise, भरद्वाजेन by Bharadwaja, एवम् in this way, उक्तः having been addressed, धर्मवत्सलः devoted to righteousness, भरतः Bharata, भरद्वाजम् to Bharadwaja, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

Having been thus addressed by wise Bharadwaja, Bharata, devoted to righteousness, replied:

AK-113-9Ayodhya Kanda 113.9

स याच्यमानो गुरुणा मया च दृढविक्रमः। राघवः परमप्रीतो वसिष्ठं वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।2.113.9।।

sa yācyamāno guruṇā mayā ca dṛḍhavikramḥ| rāghavḥ paramaprīto vasiṣṭhṃ vākyamabravīt||2.113.9||

Translation

गुरुणा by the preceptor (Vasistha), मया by me, याच्यमानः entreated, दृढविक्रमः of firmness of mind, राघवः Rama, परमप्रीतः highly pleased, वसिष्ठम् to Vasistha, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Entreated by me and by preceptor (Vasistha), the highly pleased Rama with his firmness of mind replied to Vasistha:

AK-113-10Ayodhya Kanda 113.10

पितुः प्रतिज्ञां तामेव पालयिष्यामि तत्त्वतः। चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि या प्रतिज्ञा पितुर्मम।।2.113.10।।

pituḥ pratijñāṃ tāmeva pālayiṣyāmi tattvatḥ| caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi yā pratijñā piturmama||2.113.10||

Translation

चतुर्दश वर्षाणि हि fourteen years indeed, मम पितुः to my father, या प्रतिज्ञा that promise, पितुः of my father, तां प्रतिज्ञाम् एव that promise only, तत्त्वतः truly, पालयिष्यामि shall honour.

Meaning

In sooth, I shall honour the words of promise given by my father and live in the forest for fourteen years, as promised.

AK-113-11Ayodhya Kanda 113.11

एवमुक्तो महाप्राज्ञो वसिष्ठः प्रत्युवाच ह। वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यकुशलं राघवं वचनं महत्।।2.113.11।।

evamukto mahāprājño vasiṣṭhḥ pratyuvāca ha| vākyajño vākyakuśalṃ rāghavṃ vacanṃ mahat||2.113.11||

Translation

एवम् in this way, उक्तः spoken, महाप्राज्ञः great intellectual, वाक्यज्ञः eloquent, वसिष्ठः Vasistha, वाक्यकुशलम् skilled in words, राघवम् Rama, महत् of deep significance, वचनम् words, प्रत्युवाच ह replied.

Meaning

On hearing him, Vasistha a great intellectual and highly eloquent one replied to Rama, skilled in words of deep significance.

AK-113-12Ayodhya Kanda 113.12

एते प्रयच्छ संहृष्टः पादुके हेमभूषिते। अयोध्यायां महाप्राज्ञ योगक्षेमकरे तव।।2.113.12।।

ete prayaccha sṃhṛṣṭḥ pāduke hemabhūṣite| ayodhyāyāṃ mahāprājña yogakṣemakare tava||2.113.12||

Translation

महाप्राज्ञ O extemely sagacious one, संहृष्टः with pleasure, अयोध्यायाम् of Ayodhya, योगक्षेमकरे securing safety and security, एते these two, हेमभूषिते decorated with gold, तव पादुके your pair of sandals, प्रयच्छ bestow.

Meaning

O extremely sagacious one, bestow with pleasure your sandals decked with gold for security and safety of Ayodhya.

AK-113-13Ayodhya Kanda 113.13

एवमुक्तो वसिष्ठेन राघवः प्राङ्मुखः स्थितः। पादुके ह्यधिरुह्यैते मम राज्याय वै ददौ।।2.113.13।।

evamukto vasiṣṭhena rāghavḥ prāṅmukhḥ sthitḥ| pāduke hyadhiruhyaite mama rājyāya vai dadau||2.113.13||

Translation

वसिष्ठेन by Vasistha, एवम् in this way, उक्तः having spoken, राघवः Rama, प्राङ्मुखः स्थितः standing eastward, एते these, पादुके sandals, अधिरुह्य wearing, मम to me, राज्याय for the sake of ruling the kingdom, ददौ bestowed.

Meaning

Thus addressed by Vasistha, Rama stood facing eastward wearing these sandals. and bestowed them on me for the sake of ruling the kingdom.

AK-113-14Ayodhya Kanda 113.14

निवृत्तोऽहमनुज्ञातो रामेण सुमहात्मना। अयोध्यामेव गच्छामि गृहीत्वा पादुके शुभे।।2.113.14।।

nivṛtto'hamanujñāto rāmeṇa sumahātmanā| ayodhyāmeva gacchāmi gṛhītvā pāduke śubhe||2.113.14||

Translation

सुमहात्मना by the highly magnanimous, रामेण by Rama, अनुज्ञातः having been permitted, अहम् I, निवृत्तः am returning, शुभे auspicious, पादुके sandals, गृहीत्वा taking, अयोध्यामेव to Ayodhya only, गच्छामि am going.

Meaning

I am now returning to Ayodhya with these auspicious sandals permitted by the magnanimous Rama.

AK-113-15Ayodhya Kanda 113.15

एतच्छ्रुत्वा शुभं वाक्यं भरतस्य महात्मनः। भरद्वाजश्शुभतरं मुनिर्वाक्यमुवाच तम्।।2.113.15।।

etacchrutvā śubhṃ vākyṃ bharatasya mahātmanḥ| bharadvājaśśubhatarṃ munirvākyamuvāca tam||2.113.15||

Translation

महात्मनः of the magnanimous, भरतस्य Bharata's, शुभम् auspicious, एतत् all these, वाक्यम् words, श्रुत्वा having heard, भरद्वाज: Bharadwaja, मुनिः sage, शुभतरम् the more auspicious, वाक्यम् words, तम् addressing Bharata, उवाच said.

Meaning

Hearing the auspicious words of the magnanimous Bharata, sage Bharadwaja said to him in words still more auspicious.

AK-113-16Ayodhya Kanda 113.16

नैतच्चित्रं नरव्याघ्र शीलवृत्तवतां वर। यदार्यं त्वयि तिष्ठेत्तु निम्ने सृष्टमिवोदकम्।।2.113.16।।

naitaccitrṃ naravyāghra śīlavṛttavatāṃ vara| yadāryṃ tvayi tiṣṭhettu nimne sṛṣṭamivodakam||2.113.16||

Translation

नरव्याघ्र O best of men, शीलवृत्तवताम् among men of excellent character and dispositon, वर foremost, सृष्टम् poured out, उदकम् water, निम्ने इव like downward, आर्यम् noble, त्वयि in you, यत् तिष्ठेत् reside, एतत् that one, चित्रम् surprising, न not.

Meaning

O best of men, foremost among men of excellent character and dispositon, it is not surprising that all noble qualities come to reside in you naturally like water poured flowing downward.

AK-113-17Ayodhya Kanda 113.17

अमृत स्समहाबाहुः पिता दशरथस्तव। यस्य त्वमीदृश: पुत्रो धर्मज्ञो धर्मवत्सलः।।2.113.17।।

amṛta ssamahābāhuḥ pitā daśarathastava| yasya tvamīdṛśa: putro dharmajño dharmavatsalḥ||2.113.17||

Translation

यस्य of whom, धर्मज्ञः knower of righteousness, धर्मवत्सलः one who is devoted to duty, ईदृशः endowed with such qualties, त्वम् you, पुत्रः as son, सः such, महाबाहुः mightyarmed man, तव your, पिता father, दशरथः Dasaratha, अमृतः is not dead.

Meaning

With you as his son, endowed with qualities of righteousness and devotion to duty, your mightyarmed father Dasaratha is not dead. (He lives through you).

AK-113-18Ayodhya Kanda 113.18

तमृषिं तु महात्मानमुक्तवाक्यं कृताञ्जलिः। आमन्त्रयितुमारेभे चरणावुपगृह्य च।।2.113.18।।

tamṛṣiṃ tu mahātmānamuktavākyṃ kṛtāñjaliḥ| āmantrayitumārebhe caraṇāvupagṛhya ca||2.113.18||

Translation

कृताञ्जलिः with folded palms, उक्तवाक्यम् having spoken thus, महात्मानम् magnanimous one, तं ऋषिम् that sage, चरणौ feet, उपगृह्य clasping, आमन्त्रयितुम् to take leave of, आरेभे he commenced.

Meaning

Hearing the words of the magnanimous Bharadwaja, Bharata paid his respect, folding his palms, and clasping the feet of the sage and sought his permission to leave.

AK-113-19Ayodhya Kanda 113.19

ततः प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा भरद्वाजं पुनः पुनः। भरतस्तु ययौ श्रीमानयोध्यां सह मन्त्रिभिः।।2.113.19।।

tatḥ pradakṣiṇṃ kṛtvā bharadvājṃ punḥ punḥ| bharatastu yayau śrīmānayodhyāṃ saha mantribhiḥ||2.113.19||

Translation

ततः then, श्रीमान् the illustrious, भरतः Bharata, पुन पुनः again and again, भरद्वाजम् to Bharadwaja, प्रदक्षिणम् circumambulation, कृत्वा having done, मन्त्रिभिस्सह along with the counsellors, अयोध्याम् to Ayodhya, ययौ set out.

Meaning

Then illustrious Bharata circumambulated the sage several times in homage before he set out for Ayodhya with his counsellors.

AK-113-20Ayodhya Kanda 113.20

यानैश्च शकटैश्चैव हयैर्नागैश्च सा चमूः। पुनर्निवृत्ता विस्तीर्णा भरतस्यानुयायिनी।।2.113.20 ।।

yānaiśca śakaṭaiścaiva hayairnāgaiśca sā camūḥ| punarnivṛttā vistīrṇā bharatasyānuyāyinī||2.113.20 ||

Translation

भरतस्य Bharata's, विस्तीर्णा vast, सा चमूः that army, अनुयायिनी following, यानैश्च with carriages, शकटैश्चैव with carts, हयैः with horses, नागैश्च with elephants, पुनः again, निवृत्ता turned back towards Ayodhya.

Meaning

The vast army of Bharata with all its carriages, carts, horses and elephants following him again turned back towards Ayodhya.

AK-113-21Ayodhya Kanda 113.21

ततस्ते यमुनां दिव्यां नदीं तीर्त्वोर्मिमालिनीम्। ददृशुस्तां पुन स्सर्वे गङ्गां शुभजलां नदीम्।।2.113.21।।

tataste yamunāṃ divyāṃ nadīṃ tīrtvormimālinīm| dadṛśustāṃ puna ssarve gaṅgāṃ śubhajalāṃ nadīm||2.113.21||

Translation

ततः thereafter, ते सर्वे all of them, दिव्याम् divine, ऊर्मिमालिनीम् wreathed with waves, यमुनां नदीम् river Yamuna, तीर्त्वा having crossed, शुभजलाम् of auspicious waters of, तां गङ्गां that Ganga, नदीम् river, पुनः again, ददृशुः beheld.

Meaning

Thereafter, all of them crossed the divine river Yamuna wreathed in waves and, beheld the Ganga of sacred waters once again.

AK-113-22Ayodhya Kanda 113.22

तां रम्यजलसंपूर्णां सन्तीर्य सहबान्धवः शृङ्गिबेरपुरं रम्यं प्रविवेश ससैनिकः। शृङ्गिबेरपुराद्भूय स्त्वयोध्यां सन्ददर्श ह।।2.113.22।।

tāṃ ramyajalasṃpūrṇāṃ santīrya sahabāndhavḥ śṛṅgiberapurṃ ramyṃ praviveśa sasainikḥ| śṛṅgiberapurādbhūya stvayodhyāṃ sandadarśa ha||2.113.22||

Translation

रम्यजलसंपूर्णाम् overflowing with wonderful waters, ताम् to Ganga , सहबान्धवः with relations, सन्तीर्य having crossed, ससैनिकः with army, रम्यम् beautiful, शृङ्गिबेरपुरम् Sringiberapura, प्रविवेश entered, शृङ्गिबेरपुरात् from Sringiberapura, भूयः again, अयोध्याम् Ayodhya, सन्ददर्श ह beheld.

Meaning

Bharata along with his kins and his army crossed the Ganga with its overflowing, wonderful waters and entered the beautiful city of Sringiberapura and from there he proceeded until he beheld the city of Ayodhya.

AK-113-23Ayodhya Kanda 113.23

अयोध्यां च ततो दृष्ट्वा पित्रा भ्रात्रा विवर्जिताम्। भरतो दुःख सन्तप्त स्सारथिं चेदमब्रवीत्।।2.113.23।।

ayodhyāṃ ca tato dṛṣṭvā pitrā bhrātrā vivarjitām| bharato duḥkha santapta ssārathiṃ cedamabravīt||2.113.23||

Translation

ततः then, भरतः Bharata, पित्रा by father, भ्रात्रा by brothers, विवर्जिताम् deserted, अयोध्याम् Ayodhya, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, दुःख सन्तप्तः consumed with grief, सारथिम् to the charioteer, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

On seeing the city of Ayodhya bereft of his father and brothers, Bharata, consumed with grief, said to the charioteer:

AK-113-24Ayodhya Kanda 113.24

सारथे पश्य विध्वस्ता साऽयोध्या न प्रकाशते। निराकारा निरानन्दा दीना प्रतिहतस्वरा।।2.113.24।।

sārathe paśya vidhvastā sā'yodhyā na prakāśate| nirākārā nirānandā dīnā pratihatasvarā||2.113.24||

Translation

सारथे O charioteer, विध्वस्ता ruined, सा आयोध्या that Ayodhya, निराकारा formless, निरानन्दा cheerless, दीना desolate, प्रतिहतस्वरा silent, न प्रकाशते does not shine, पश्य see.

Meaning

O charioteer, look, Ayodhya is in shapeless shambles. It is silent and cheerless. It is dull and desolate. It shines no more. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अयोध्याकाण्डे त्रयोदशोरशततमस्सर्गः। Thus ends the hundredthirteenth sarga in Ayodhyakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
