AK-114-1Ayodhya Kanda 114.1

स्निग्धगम्भीरघोषेण स्यन्दनेनोपयान्प्रभुः। अयोध्यां भरतः क्षिप्रं प्रविवेश महायशाः।।2.114.1।।

snigdhagambhīraghoṣeṇa syandanenopayānprabhuḥ| ayodhyāṃ bharatḥ kṣiprṃ praviveśa mahāyaśāḥ||2.114.1||

Translation

महायशः renowned, प्रभुः lord, भरतः Bharata, स्निग्धगम्भीरघोषेण with its deep, soothing sound, स्यन्दनेन by the chariot, उपयान् while travelling, क्षिप्रम् soon, अयोध्याम् Ayodhya, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

Bharata, the renowned lord (of Ayodhya) travelled on the chariot that produced a deep, soothing, sound. And entered Ayodhya soon.

AK-114-2Ayodhya Kanda 114.2

बिडालोलूकचरितामालीननरवारणाम्। तिमिराभ्याहतां कालीमप्रकाशां निशामिव।।2.114.2।।

biḍālolūkacaritāmālīnanaravāraṇām| timirābhyāhatāṃ kālīmaprakāśāṃ niśāmiva||2.114.2||

Translation

बिडालोलूकचरिताम् ranged by cats and owls, आलीननरवारणाम् where people and elephants were out of sight, तिमीराभ्याहताम् enveloped in darkness, अप्रकाशाम् without light, कालीम् black, निशामिव like night.

AK-114-3Ayodhya Kanda 114.3

राहुशत्रोः प्रियां पत्नीं श्रिया प्रज्वलितप्रभाम्। ग्रहेणाभ्युत्थितेनैकां रोहिणीमिव पीडिताम्।।2.114.3।।

rāhuśatroḥ priyāṃ patnīṃ śriyā prajvalitaprabhām| graheṇābhyutthitenaikāṃ rohiṇīmiva pīḍitām||2.114.3||

Translation

श्रिया with majesty, प्रज्वलितप्रभाम् radiating with lustre, अभ्युत्थितेन exalted, ग्रहेन by cruel planet, पीडिताम् tormented, राहुशत्रोः enemy of Rahu, (the Moon's), प्रियाम् beloved, पत्नीम् to wife, एकाम् alone, रोहिणीमिव like the star Rohini.

Meaning

(The city looked) like Rohini, the beloved consort of the Moon, the star which was majesticlly radiating flaming brilliance and now, tormented by the exalted Rahu which has eclipsed the Moon, shines alone.

AK-114-4Ayodhya Kanda 114.4

अल्पोष्णक्षुब्धसलिलां घर्मोत्तप्तविहङ्गमाम्। लीनमीनझषग्राहां कृशां गिरिनदीमिव।।2.114.4।।

alpoṣṇakṣubdhasalilāṃ gharmottaptavihaṅgamām| līnamīnajhaṣagrāhāṃ kṛśāṃ girinadīmiva||2.114.4||

Translation

अल्पोष्णक्षुब्धसलिलां with scant, hot and turbid waters, घर्मोत्तप्तविहङ्गमाम् the aquatic birds scorched by the Sun's heat, लीनमीनझषग्राहाम् small fish, large fish and crocodiles perished, कृशाम् dried up, गिरिनदीमिव like a mountainstream.

Meaning

(It appeared) like a lean mountainstream with scant, hot and turbid waters, with scorched aquatic birds and with small and large fishes and crocodiles dead due to the heat of the Sun.

AK-114-5Ayodhya Kanda 114.5

विधूमामिव हेमाभामध्वराग्ने स्समुत्थिताम्। हविरभ्युक्षितां पश्चाच्छिखां विप्रलयं गताम्।।2.114.5।।

vidhūmāmiva hemābhāmadhvarāgne ssamutthitām| havirabhyukṣitāṃ paścācchikhāṃ vipralayṃ gatām||2.114.5||

Translation

विधूमाम् smokeless, हेमाभाम् with the splendour of gold, समुत्थिताम् rising, पश्चात् later on, हविरभ्युक्षिताम् sprinkled with sacrificial offering of clarified butter, विप्रलयम् extinction, गताम् obtained, अध्वराग्नेः sacrificial fire's, शिखामिव like flames.

AK-114-6Ayodhya Kanda 114.6

विध्वस्तकवचां रुग्णगजवाजिरथध्वजाम्। हतप्रवीरामापन्नां चमूमिव महाहवे।।2.114.6।।

vidhvastakavacāṃ rugṇagajavājirathadhvajām| hatapravīrāmāpannāṃ camūmiva mahāhave||2.114.6||

Translation

महाहवे in a great battle, विध्वस्तकवचाम् armours scattered, रुग्णगजवाजिरथध्वजाम् injured elephants, horses and shattered chariots and banners standards, हतप्रवीराम् with heroic warriors slain, आपन्नाम् in great distress, चमूमिव like the army.

Meaning

warriors slain in the great battle (the city appeared desolate).

AK-114-7Ayodhya Kanda 114.7

सफेनां सस्वनां भूत्वा सागरस्य समुत्थिताम्। प्रशान्तमारुतोद्धूतां जलोर्मिमिव निस्स्वनाम्।।2.114.7।।

saphenāṃ sasvanāṃ bhūtvā sāgarasya samutthitām| praśāntamārutoddhūtāṃ jalormimiva nissvanām||2.114.7||

Translation

सफेनाम् filled with foam, सस्वनाम् भूत्वा with roaring sounds, समुत्थिताम् risen, प्रशान्तमारुतोद्धूताम् swept by the gentle breeze, निस्स्वनाम् silent, सागरस्य ocean's, जलोर्मिमिव like a wave.

AK-114-8Ayodhya Kanda 114.8

त्यक्तां यज्ञायुधैः सर्वैरभिरूपैश्च याजकैः। सुत्याकाले सुनिर्वृत्ते वेदिं गतरवामिव।।2.114.8।।

tyaktāṃ yajñāyudhaiḥ sarvairabhirūpaiśca yājakaiḥ| sutyākāle sunirvṛtte vediṃ gataravāmiva||2.114.8||

Translation

सर्वैः all, यज्ञायुधैः with sacrificial appliances, अभिरूपैः learned, याजकैः with priests, सुत्याकाले the time of extraction of Soma juice, विनिर्वृते has come to an end, त्यक्ताम् deserted, गतरवाम् sounds ceased, वेदिम् इव like an altar.

AK-114-9Ayodhya Kanda 114.9

गोष्ठमध्ये स्थितामार्तामचरन्तीं तृणं नवम्। गोवृषेण परित्यक्तां गवां पक्तिमिवोत्सुकाम्।।2.114.9।।

goṣṭhamadhye sthitāmārtāmacarantīṃ tṛṇṃ navam| govṛṣeṇa parityaktāṃ gavāṃ paktimivotsukām||2.114.9||

Translation

गोवृषेण by a bull, परित्यक्ताम् forsaken, उत्सुकाम् longing (for the bull), गवाम् of cows, गोष्ठमध्ये in the midst of the herd, स्थिताम् standing, आर्ताम् despaired, नवं new, तृणम् grass, अचरन्तीं no longer grazing, पक्तिमिव like a cow.

Meaning

the midst of the herd despairs and no longer grazes the new grass.

AK-114-10Ayodhya Kanda 114.10

प्रभाकराद्यै स्सुस्निग्धैः प्रज्वलद्भिरिवोत्तमैः। वियुक्तां मणिभिर्जात्यैर्नवां मुक्तावलीमिव।।2.114.10।।

prabhākarādyai ssusnigdhaiḥ prajvaladbhirivottamaiḥ| viyuktāṃ maṇibhirjātyairnavāṃ muktāvalīmiva||2.114.10||

Translation

सुस्निग्धै: by the most glossy, प्रज्वलद्भिरिव by the radiant, उत्तमैः by the excellent ones, जात्यैः by those of the finest class, प्रभाकराद्यैः rubies and other gems, मणिभिः with precious stones, वियुक्ताम् detached, नवाम् new, मुक्तावलीमिव like a pearl necklace.

AK-114-11Ayodhya Kanda 114.11

सहसा चलितां स्थानान्महीं पुण्यक्षयाद्गताम्। संवृतद्युतिविस्तारां तारामिव दिवश्च्युताम्।।2.114.11।।

sahasā calitāṃ sthānānmahīṃ puṇyakṣayādgatām| sṃvṛtadyutivistārāṃ tārāmiva divaścyutām||2.114.11||

Translation

पुण्यक्षयात् due to exhaustion of merit, स्थानात् from its place, सहसा suddenly, महीम् the earth, गताम् reached, संवृतद्युतिविस्ताराम् with its extensive lustre dimmed, दिवः from the earth, च्युताम् fallen, तारामिव like a star.

AK-114-12Ayodhya Kanda 114.12

पुष्पनद्धां वसन्तान्ते मत्तभ्रमरनादिताम्। द्रुतदावाग्नि विप्लुष्टां क्लान्तां वनलतामिव।।2.114.12।।

puṣpanaddhāṃ vasantānte mattabhramaranāditām| drutadāvāgni vipluṣṭāṃ klāntāṃ vanalatāmiva||2.114.12||

Translation

वसन्तान्ते at the end of spring, द्रुतदावाग्नि विप्लुष्टाम् ravaged by the fastspreading forest fire, पुष्पनद्धाम् laden with flowers, मत्तभ्रमरनादिताम् with the melodious hum of intoxicated bees, क्लान्ताम् withered away, वनलतामिव like a woodland creeper.

Meaning

with the melodious humming of intoxicated bees and suddenly shrivelling, ravaged by the fastspreading forest fire.

AK-114-13Ayodhya Kanda 114.13

सम्मूढनिगमांस्तब्धां संक्षिप्तविपणापणाम्। प्रच्छन्नशशिनक्षत्रां द्यामिवाम्बुधरैर्वृताम्।।2.114.13।।

sammūḍhanigamāṃstabdhāṃ sṃkṣiptavipaṇāpaṇām| pracchannaśaśinakṣatrāṃ dyāmivāmbudharairvṛtām||2.114.13||

Translation

सम्मूढनिगमाम् dazed merchants, स्तब्धाम् stilled, संक्षिप्तविपणापणाम् with markets and shops closed, अम्बुधरैः with clouds, वृताम् covered, प्रच्छन्नशशिनक्षत्राम् obscuring the moon and stars, द्यामिव like the sky.

Meaning

Ayodhya with its markets and shops closed, and its merchants in a daze looked like the sky covered with clouds obscuring the Moon and stars.

AK-114-14Ayodhya Kanda 114.14

क्षीणपानोत्तमैर्भग्नैः शरावैरभिसंवृताम्। हतशौण्डामिव ध्वस्तांं पानभूमिमसंस्कृताम्।।2.114.14।।

kṣīṇapānottamairbhagnaiḥ śarāvairabhisṃvṛtām| hataśauṇḍāmiva dhvastāṃṃ pānabhūmimasṃskṛtām||2.114.14||

Translation

आकाशे lying in the open, क्षीणपानोत्तमैः with excellent wine exhausted, भग्नैः by the broken, शरावैः by pitchers, अभिसंवृताम् surrounded by, हताशौण्डाम् with drunkards dead, ध्वस्ताम् scattered, असंस्कृताम् uncleansed, पानभूमि इव like a drinking place.

Meaning

(Ayodhya looked) like an uncleansed drinking place with broken pitchers emptied of excellent wine scattered around and with drunkards lying dead in the open.

AK-114-15Ayodhya Kanda 114.15

वृक्णभूमितलां निम्नां वृक्णपात्रैस्समावृताम्। उपयुक्तोदकां भग्नां प्रपां निपतितामिव।।2.114.15।।

vṛkṇabhūmitalāṃ nimnāṃ vṛkṇapātraissamāvṛtām| upayuktodakāṃ bhagnāṃ prapāṃ nipatitāmiva||2.114.15||

Translation

वृक्णभूमितलाम् surface riven, वृक्णपात्रैः with broken pots, समावृताम् scattered around, निम्नाम् like a dale, उपयुक्तोदकाम् water used up, भग्नाम् broken, निपतिताम् sunken, प्रपामिव like a well.

Meaning

(Ayodhya appeared) like a ruined well, its foundations broken and sunken into the earth, its water used up, with broken pots scattered around, its riven surface forming a dale.

AK-114-16Ayodhya Kanda 114.16

विपुलां विततां चैव युक्तपाशां तरस्विनाम्। भूमौ बाणैर्विनिष्कृत्तां पतितां ज्यामिवायुधात्।।2.114.16।।

vipulāṃ vitatāṃ caiva yuktapāśāṃ tarasvinām| bhūmau bāṇairviniṣkṛttāṃ patitāṃ jyāmivāyudhāt||2.114.16||

Translation

विपुलाम् extensive, वितताम् stretched, युक्तपाशाम् attached with nooses, तरस्विनाम् of a powerful man, बाणैः with arrows, विनिष्कृत्ताम् severed, आयुधात् from the weapon, भूमौ on the ground, पतिताम् fallen, ज्यामिव like a bowstring.

AK-114-17Ayodhya Kanda 114.17

सहसा युद्धशौण्डेन हयारोहेण वाहिताम्। निहतां प्रतिसैन्येन वडवामिव पातिताम्।।2.114.17।।

sahasā yuddhaśauṇḍena hayāroheṇa vāhitām| nihatāṃ pratisainyena vaḍavāmiva pātitām||2.114.17||

Translation

युद्धशौण्डेन by a warrior skilled in warfare, हयारोहेण by the rider of a horse, सहसा suddenly, वाहिताम् carried, प्रतिसैन्येन by the enemy army, निहताम् slain, पातिताम् fallen on the ground, वडवामिव like a mare.

AK-114-18Ayodhya Kanda 114.18

शुष्कतोयां महामत्स्यैः कूर्मैश्च बहुभिर्वृताम्। प्रभिन्नतटविस्तीर्णां वापीमिव हृतोत्पलाम्।।2.114.18।।

śuṣkatoyāṃ mahāmatsyaiḥ kūrmaiśca bahubhirvṛtām| prabhinnataṭavistīrṇāṃ vāpīmiva hṛtotpalām||2.114.18||

Translation

शुष्कतोयाम् water dried up, बहुभिः a lot of, महामत्सैः with large fishes, कूर्मैश्च with tortoises, वृताम् filled, प्रभिन्नतटविस्तीर्णाम् vast area around the bank split, हृतोत्पलाम् waterlilies withered, वापीमिव like a circular reservoir of water.

AK-114-19Ayodhya Kanda 114.19

पुरुषस्याप्रहृष्टस्य प्रतिषिद्धानुलेपनाम्। सन्तप्तामिव शोकेन गात्रयष्टिमभूषणाम्।।2.114.19।।

puruṣasyāprahṛṣṭasya pratiṣiddhānulepanām| santaptāmiva śokena gātrayaṣṭimabhūṣaṇām||2.114.19||

Translation

प्रतिषिद्धानुलेपनां with no oil massaged (on the body), शोकेन with grief, सन्तप्ताम् scorched, अभूषणाम् without ornaments, अप्रहृष्टस्य in dejection, पुरुषस्य man's, गात्रयष्टिमिव body like a stick (skeletal).

AK-114-20Ayodhya Kanda 114.20

प्रावृषि प्रविगाढायां प्रविष्टस्याभ्रमण्डलम्। प्रच्छन्नां नीलजीमूतैर्भास्करस्य प्रभामिव।।2.114.20।।

prāvṛṣi pravigāḍhāyāṃ praviṣṭasyābhramaṇḍalam| pracchannāṃ nīlajīmūtairbhāskarasya prabhāmiva||2.114.20||

Translation

प्रविगाढायाम् deep, पावृषि in the rainy season, अभ्रमण्डलम् orb of clouds, प्रविष्टस्य entered, भास्करस्य the Sun's, नीलजीमूतैः by black clouds, प्रच्छन्नाम् obscured, प्रभामिव like the radiance.

AK-114-21Ayodhya Kanda 114.21

भरतस्तु रथस्थ स्सन् श्रीमान्दशरथात्मजः। वाहयन्तं रथश्रेष्ठं सारथिं वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।2.114.21।।

bharatastu rathastha ssan śrīmāndaśarathātmajḥ| vāhayantṃ rathaśreṣṭhṃ sārathiṃ vākyamabravīt||2.114.21||

Translation

श्रीमान् illustrious, दशरथात्मजः son of Dasaratha, भरतस्तु Bharata, रथस्थस्सन् seated in the chariot, रथश्रेष्ठम् the most excellent of chariots, वाहयन्तम् driving, सारथिम् to the charioteer, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Illustrious Bharata, son of Dasaratha, seated in his chariot, addressed the charioteer as he drove the most excellent of chariots saying:

AK-114-22Ayodhya Kanda 114.22

किं नु खल्वद्य गम्भीरो मूर्छितो न निशम्यते। यथापुरमयोध्यायां गीतवादित्रनिस्वनः।।2.114.22।।

kiṃ nu khalvadya gambhīro mūrchito na niśamyate| yathāpuramayodhyāyāṃ gītavāditranisvanḥ||2.114.22||

Translation

अयोध्यायाम् In Ayodhya, अद्य now, यथापुरम् as in the past, गम्भीरः deep, मूर्छितः allpervasive, गीतवादित्रनिस्वनः songs and sounds of musical instruments, न निशम्यते are not heard, किं नु खलु what could be the reason?

Meaning

How is it that in Ayodhya, the deep and allpervasive songs and sounds of musical instruments of the former days are not heard now?

AK-114-23Ayodhya Kanda 114.23

वारुणीमदगन्धश्च माल्यगन्धश्च मूर्छितः। धूपितागुरुगन्धश्च न प्रवाति समन्ततः।।2.114.23।।

vāruṇīmadagandhaśca mālyagandhaśca mūrchitḥ| dhūpitāgurugandhaśca na pravāti samantatḥ||2.114.23||

Translation

वारुणीमदगन्धश्च the intoxicating odour of spirituous liquor, माल्यगन्धश्च the fragrance of flower garlands, धूपितागरुगन्धश्च the fragrance of agaru or incense, समन्ततः everywhere, मूर्छितः pervading, न प्रवाति does not blow.

Meaning

The breeze no longer carries the intoxicating odour of spirituous liquor, the pervading fragrance of flower garlands and agaru (incense).

AK-114-24Ayodhya Kanda 114.24

यानप्रवरघोषश्च स्निग्धश्च हयनिस्वनः। प्रमत्तगजनादश्च महांश्च रथनिस्वनः।।2.114.24।। नेदानीं श्रूयते पुर्यामस्यां रामे विवासिते।

yānapravaraghoṣaśca snigdhaśca hayanisvanḥ| pramattagajanādaśca mahāṃśca rathanisvanḥ||2.114.24|| nedānīṃ śrūyate puryāmasyāṃ rāme vivāsite|

Translation

रामे Rama, विवासिते having been exiled, इदानीम् now, अस्यां पुर्याम् in this city, यानप्रवरघोषश्च clatter of excellent carriages, स्निग्धः pleasant, हयनिस्वनश्च neighing of horses, प्रमत्तगजनादश्च trumpeting of elephants in rut, महान् great, रथनिस्वनः च rattle of chariots, न श्रूयते are not heard.

Meaning

After Rama's the exile the clatter of excellent carriages, the pleasing neighing of horses and trumpeting of elephants in rut and the rattle of chariots are no longer heard now.

AK-114-25-26Ayodhya Kanda 114.25–26 (युग्मम्)

चन्दनागरुगन्धांश्च महार्हाश्च नवस्रजः। गते हि रामे तरुणा स्संतप्ता नोपभुञ्जते।।2.114.25।।

candanāgarugandhāṃśca mahārhāśca navasrajḥ| gate hi rāme taruṇā ssṃtaptā nopabhuñjate||2.114.25||

Translation

रामे Rama, गते having departed, तरुणाः the young men, संतप्ताः distressed, चन्दनागरुगन्धांश्च incense of agaru and sandalwood paste, महार्हा: expensive, नवस्रजश्च garlands of fresh flowers, नोपभुञ्जते do not enjoy.

Meaning

Since Rama has departed, the young men in distress do not enjoy expensive incense of agaru and sandalwood paste and garlands of fresh flowers.

AK-114-27Ayodhya Kanda 114.27

बहिर्यात्रां न गच्छन्ति चित्रमाल्यधरा नराः। नोत्सवा स्सम्प्रवर्तन्ते रामशोकार्दिते पुरे।।2.114.27।।

bahiryātrāṃ na gacchanti citramālyadharā narāḥ| notsavā ssampravartante rāmaśokārdite pure||2.114.27||

Translation

रामशोकार्दिते stricken with grief on account of separation from Rama, पुरे in the city, नराः men, चित्रमाल्यधराः wearing garlands of variegated flowers, बहिः outside, यात्राम् pleasure jaunts, न गच्छन्ति do not go, उत्सवाः festivites, न सम्प्रवर्तन्ते are not celebrated.

Meaning

This city is stricken with grief on account of Rama's departure. Men do not go out on pleasure jaunts wearing garlands of variegated flowers. Festivities are not celebrated.

AK-114-28Ayodhya Kanda 114.28

सह नूनं मम भ्रात्रा पुरस्यास्य द्युतिर्गता। न हि राजत्ययोध्येयं सासारेवार्जुनी क्षपा।।2.114.28।।

saha nūnṃ mama bhrātrā purasyāsya dyutirgatā| na hi rājatyayodhyeyṃ sāsārevārjunī kṣapā||2.114.28||

Translation

अस्य पुरस्य of this city, द्युतिः splendour, मम my, भ्रात्रा सह along with brother, गता had left, नूनम् certainly, इयम् this, अयोध्या Ayodhya, सासारा with rain pouring down, अर्जुनी relating to the waning Moon, क्षपा इव like night, न राजति हि does not gleam.

Meaning

Certainly splendour has left along with my brother. Like the night when the rain pours down during the waning of the Moon, Ayodhya shines not.

AK-114-29Ayodhya Kanda 114.29

कदा नु खलु मे भ्राता महोत्सव इवाऽगतः। जनयिष्यत्ययोध्यायां हर्षं ग्रीष्म इवाम्बुदः।।2.114.29।।

kadā nu khalu me bhrātā mahotsava ivā'gatḥ| janayiṣyatyayodhyāyāṃ harṣṃ grīṣma ivāmbudḥ||2.114.29||

Translation

मे भ्राता my brother, महोत्सव इव like a carnival, आगतः having returned, ग्रीष्मे in summer, अम्बुदः इव like clouds, अयोध्यायाम् in Ayodhya, हर्षम् delight, कदा when, जनयिष्यति नु खलु will cause.

Meaning

When will my brother return to Ayodhya like a carnival and cause delight to every one like summer clouds?

AK-114-30Ayodhya Kanda 114.30

तरुणैश्चारुवेषैश्च नरैरुन्नतगामिभिः। सम्पतद्भिरयोध्यायां नाभिभान्ति महापथाः।।2.114.30।।

taruṇaiścāruveṣaiśca narairunnatagāmibhiḥ| sampatadbhirayodhyāyāṃ nābhibhānti mahāpathāḥ||2.114.30||

Translation

अयोध्यायाम् in Ayodhya, महापथाः highways, चारुवेषैः by those elegantly attired, उन्नतगामिभिः with their majestic gait, सम्पतद्भिः by those coming together in groups, तरुणैः young men, नरैः men, नाभिभान्ति is not shining.

Meaning

The highways of Ayodhya thronged with groups of elegantly attired young men or adults with their majestic gait, do not shine.

AK-114-31Ayodhya Kanda 114.31

एवं बहुविधं जल्पन्विवेश वसतिं पितुः। तेन हीनां नरेन्द्रेण सिंहहीनां गुहामिव।।2.114.31।।

evṃ bahuvidhṃ jalpanviveśa vasatiṃ pituḥ| tena hīnāṃ narendreṇa siṃhahīnāṃ guhāmiva||2.114.31||

Translation

एवम् thus, बहुविधम् in several ways, जल्पन् talking, तेन by that, नरेन्द्रेण by the king, हीनाम् bereft of, सिंहहीनाम् without a lion, गुहामिव like a cave, पितुः father's, वसतिम् residence, विवेश entered.

Meaning

Thus mourning in several ways, Bharata entered his fathers' palace (now) bereft of the king like a cave without the lion.
