AK-72-1Aranya Kanda 72.1

एवमुक्तौतु तौ वीरौ कबन्धेन नरेश्वरौ। गिरिप्रदरमासाद्य पावकं विससर्जतुः।।3.72.1।।

evamuktautu tau vīrau kabandhena nareśvarau| giripradaramāsādya pāvakṃ visasarjatuḥ||3.72.1||

Translation

कबन्धेन by Kabandha, एवम् in that manner, उक्तौ having been advised, नरेश्वरौ two kings, तौ वीरौ the two heroes, गिरिप्रदरम् mountain cave, आसाद्य reached, पावकम् fire, विससर्जतुः lighted.

Meaning

Thus said by Kabandha, the two lords of men, the heroes reached a cave in the mountain and lighted the fire.

AK-72-2Aranya Kanda 72.2

लक्ष्मणस्तु महोल्काभिर्ज्वलिताभिस्समन्ततः। चितामादीपयामास सा प्रजज्वाल सर्वतः।।3.72.2।।

lakṣmaṇastu maholkābhirjvalitābhissamantatḥ| citāmādīpayāmāsa sā prajajvāla sarvatḥ||3.72.2||

Translation

लक्ष्मणस्तु Lakshmana himself, ज्वलिताभिः with burning, महोल्काभिः with big meteorlike logs, समन्ततः all round, चिताम् pyre, आदीपयामास set fire, सर्वतः on all sides, प्रजज्वाल lighted.

Meaning

Lakshmana lit the pyre with big meteorlike logs on all sides and it burned.

AK-72-3Aranya Kanda 72.3

तच्छरीरं कबन्धस्य घृतपिण्डोपमं महत्। मेदसा पच्यमानस्य मन्दं दहति पावकः।।3.72.3।।

taccharīrṃ kabandhasya ghṛtapiṇḍopamṃ mahat| medasā pacyamānasya mandṃ dahati pāvakḥ||3.72.3||

Translation

मेदसा with flesh, पच्यमानस्य as the corpse was burning, कबन्धस्य Kabandha's, महत् great, घृतपिण्डोपमम् like a huge ball of ghee, तत् that, शरीरम् body, पावकः the fire, मन्दम् slowly, दहति burnt.

Meaning

As the flesh of Kabandha's body decomposed, if burnt slowly in the fire although it was like a huge mass of fat.

AK-72-4Aranya Kanda 72.4

स विधूय चितामाशु विधूमोऽग्निरिवोत्थितः। अरजे वाससी बिभ्रन्मालां दिव्यां महाबलः।।3.72.4।।

sa vidhūya citāmāśu vidhūmo'gnirivotthitḥ| araje vāsasī bibhranmālāṃ divyāṃ mahābalḥ||3.72.4||

Translation

महाबलः very strong , सः he, अरजे clean, वाससी pair of clothes, दिव्याम् divine, मालाम् garland, बिभ्रत् wearing, चिताम् from the pyre, विधूय shaking, आशु immediately, विधूमः smokeless, अग्निरिव like fire, उत्थितः he rose up.

Meaning

Mighty Kabandha shook himself off the funeral pyre and rose like smokeless fire, wearing a pair of clean clothes and a divine garland.

AK-72-5Aranya Kanda 72.5

ततश्चिताया वेगेन भास्वरो विमलाम्बरः। उत्पपाताशु संहृष्टस्सर्वप्रत्यङ्गभूषणः।।3.72.5।।

tataścitāyā vegena bhāsvaro vimalāmbarḥ| utpapātāśu sṃhṛṣṭassarvapratyaṅgabhūṣaṇḥ||3.72.5||

Translation

ततः thereafter, भास्वरः shining brightly, विमलाम्बरः wearing clean clothes, संहृष्टः happily, सर्वप्रत्यङ्गभूषणः limbs adorned with ornaments, आशु instantaneously, वेगेन speedily, चितायाः from the pyre, उत्पपात came out.

Meaning

Thereafter shining brightly in pure clothes and wearing ornaments all over the body, Kabandha hurtled out happily and instantaneously from the pyre.

AK-72-6-7Aranya Kanda 72.6–7 (युग्मम्)

विमाने भास्वरे तिष्ठन्हंसयुक्ते यशस्करे। प्रभया च महातेजा दिशो दश विराजयन्।।3.72.6।। सोऽन्तरिक्षगतो रामं कबन्धो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। शृणु राघव तत्त्वेन यथा सीतामवाप्स्यसि।।3.72.7।।

vimāne bhāsvare tiṣṭhanhṃsayukte yaśaskare| prabhayā ca mahātejā diśo daśa virājayan||3.72.6|| so'ntarikṣagato rāmṃ kabandho vākyamabravīt| śṛṇu rāghava tattvena yathā sītāmavāpsyasi||3.72.7||

Translation

सः कबन्धः he, Kabandha, अन्तरिक्षगतः reached the sky, हंसयुक्ते harnessed by swans, यशस्करे famous, भास्वरे shining, विमाने in an aerial chariot, तिष्ठन् seated, महातेजाः a brilliant one, प्रभया with glow, दश दिशः all the ten directions, विराजयन् illumining, रामम् Rama, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् said, राघव Raghava, सीताम् Sita, यथा as, अवाप्स्यसि you will be getting her, तत्त्वेन truly, शृणु listen.

Meaning

The effulgent Kabandha rose into the sky on a famous aerial chariot harnessed to swans. Seated on it, he illuminated all ten directions and spoke from the sky,'O Raghava I will truly tell you how you will get Sita, listen to me'.

AK-72-8Aranya Kanda 72.8

राम षड्युक्तयो लोके याभिस्सर्वं विमृश्यते। परिमृष्टो दशान्तेन दशाभागेन सेव्यते।।3.72.8।।

rāma ṣaḍyuktayo loke yābhissarvṃ vimṛśyate| parimṛṣṭo daśāntena daśābhāgena sevyate||3.72.8||

Translation

राम Rama, याभिः by those, सर्वम् all, विमृश्यते is tested, षट् युक्तयः six expedients, लोके in the world, दशान्तेन when one crosses that period, परिमृष्टः a man's test, दशाभागेन met with bad luck, सेव्यते he will be served.

Meaning

O Rama there are six expedients (peace,war,marching,neutrality, alliance, making peace with one and waging war with another, for attaining your goal in the world. Only the unlucky can help the unfortunate.

AK-72-9Aranya Kanda 72.9

दशाभागगतो हीनस्त्वं हि राम सलक्ष्मणः। यत्कृते व्यसनं प्राप्तं त्वया दारप्रधर्षणम्।।।3.72.9।।

daśābhāgagato hīnastvṃ hi rāma salakṣmaṇḥ| yatkṛte vyasanṃ prāptṃ tvayā dārapradharṣaṇam|||3.72.9||

Translation

राम Rama, सलक्ष्मणः along with Lakshmana, त्वम् you, दशाभागगतः going through a part of such bad period, हीनः low ebb, यत्कृते by that , त्वया by you, दारप्रधर्षणम् abduction of wife, व्यसनम् sorrow, प्राप्तम् obtained.

Meaning

Along with Lakshmna you are passing through a bad period on account of which your wife has been kidnapped and you, lying low, are experiencing great grief, O Rama

AK-72-10Aranya Kanda 72.10

तदवश्यं त्वया कार्यस्ससुहृत्सुहृदां वर। अकृत्वा हि न ते सिद्धिमहं पश्यामि चिन्तयन्।।3.72.10।।

tadavaśyṃ tvayā kāryassasuhṛtsuhṛdāṃ vara| akṛtvā hi na te siddhimahṃ paśyāmi cintayan||3.72.10||

Translation

सुहृदाम् of friends, वर best one, तत् so, सः that, त्वया by you, अवश्यम् certainly, सुहृत् friend, कार्यः should be done, अकृत्वा without doing so, ते to you, सिद्धिम् achievement, अहम् I, चिन्तयन् while I think over, न पश्यामि I do not see.

Meaning

O Rama, the best of friends you should certainly make friendship with him. As I think over the matter, I do not see any success if you do not adopt this method.

AK-72-11Aranya Kanda 72.11

श्रूयतां राम वक्ष्यामि सुग्रीवो नाम वानरः। भ्रात्रा निरस्तः क्रुद्धेन वालिना शक्रसूनुना।।3.72.11।।

śrūyatāṃ rāma vakṣyāmi sugrīvo nāma vānarḥ| bhrātrā nirastḥ kruddhena vālinā śakrasūnunā||3.72.11||

Translation

राम Rama, वक्ष्यामि l tell you, श्रूयताम् listen , शक्रसूनुना by Indra's son, भ्रात्रा by his brother, क्रुद्धेन in a fit of anger, वालिना by Vali, निरस्तः banished from the kingdom, सुग्रीवो नाम named Sugriva, वानरः monkey.

Meaning

O Rama, listen. I shall tell you. A monkey named Sugriva has been banished from the kingdom in a fit of anger by his brother Vali, the son of Indra.

AK-72-12Aranya Kanda 72.12

ऋश्यमूके गिरिवरे पम्पापर्यन्तशोभिते। निवसत्यात्मवान्वीरश्चतुर्भिस्सह वानरैः।।3.72.12।।

ṛśyamūke girivare pampāparyantaśobhite| nivasatyātmavānvīraścaturbhissaha vānaraiḥ||3.72.12||

Translation

आत्मवान् he is a man of great selfrespect, वीरः a hero, पम्पापर्यन्तशोभिते extending up to lake Pampa, ऋश्यमूके on Rishyamuka, गिरिवरे the best of the mountain, चतुर्भिः with four, वानरैः सह along with monkeys, निवसति residing.

Meaning

A hero of great selfrespect, he lives with four monkeys on a beautiful mountain Rishyamuka extending up to lake Pampa.

AK-72-13Aranya Kanda 72.13

वानरेन्द्रो महावीर्यस्तेजोवानमितप्रभः। सत्यसन्धो विनीतश्च धृतिमान्मतिमान्महान्।।3.72.13।।

vānarendro mahāvīryastejovānamitaprabhḥ| satyasandho vinītaśca dhṛtimānmatimānmahān||3.72.13||

Translation

वानरेन्द्रः king of monkeys, महावीर्यः endowed with great strength, तेजोवान् full of valour, अमितप्रभः of limitless lustre, सत्यसन्धः truthful, विनीतः humble, धृतिमान् patient, मतिमान् intelligent, महान् great.

Meaning

This king of monkeys is energetic with great strength and limitless lustre. He is humble and truthful, valiant, patient and intelligent. He is great.

AK-72-14Aranya Kanda 72.14

दक्षः प्रगल्भो द्युतिमान्महाबलपराक्रमः। भ्रात्रा विवासितो राम राज्यहेतोर्महाबलः।।3.72.14।।

dakṣḥ pragalbho dyutimānmahābalaparākramḥ| bhrātrā vivāsito rāma rājyahetormahābalḥ||3.72.14||

Translation

राम Rama, दक्षः efficient, प्रगल्भः eloquent, द्युतिमान् brilliant, महाबलपराक्रमः mighty and brave, महाबलः very strong, राज्यहेतोः for the sake of kingdom, भ्रात्रा by brother, विवासितः is banished.

Meaning

He is efficient, eloquent, brilliant. He is mighty and strong. (But) he is banished by his brother from the kingdom, O Rama

AK-72-15Aranya Kanda 72.15

स ते सहायो मित्रं च सीतायाः परिमार्गणे। भविष्यति हिते राम मा च शोके मनः कृथाः।।3.72.15।।

sa te sahāyo mitrṃ ca sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇe| bhaviṣyati hite rāma mā ca śoke manḥ kṛthāḥ||3.72.15||

Translation

राम O Rama, सः he, ते your, मित्रम् friend, सीतायाः Sita's, परिमार्गणे in searching, सहायः helpful, हिते in the welfare, भविष्यति he will be, शोके in sorrow, मनः your mind, मा कृथाः not indulge.

Meaning

O Rama he will help you as a benevolent friend in searching out Sita. Do not indulge in sorrow.

AK-72-16Aranya Kanda 72.16

भवितव्यं हि यच्चापि न तच्छक्यमिहान्यथा। कर्तुमिक्ष्वाकुशार्दूल कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः।।3.72.16।।

bhavitavyṃ hi yaccāpi na tacchakyamihānyathā| kartumikṣvākuśārdūla kālo hi duratikramḥ||3.72.16||

Translation

इक्ष्वाकुशार्दूल best of the Ikshvaku dynasty, यच्चापि whatever, भवितव्यम् has to happen, तत् that, अन्यथा otherwise, कर्तुम् to do, न शक्यम् is not possible, कालः time, दुरतिक्रमः हि cannot be transgressed.

Meaning

O best of the Ikshvaku race whatever is due to happen cannot be otherwise. It is not possible to transgress time (fate).

AK-72-17Aranya Kanda 72.17

गच्छ श्रीघ्रमितो राम सुग्रीवं तं महाबलम्। वयस्यं तं कुरु क्षिप्रमितो गत्वाऽद्य राघव।।3.72.17।। अद्रोहाय समागम्य दीप्यमाने विभावसौ।

gaccha śrīghramito rāma sugrīvṃ tṃ mahābalam| vayasyṃ tṃ kuru kṣipramito gatvā'dya rāghava||3.72.17|| adrohāya samāgamya dīpyamāne vibhāvasau|

Translation

राम Rama, इतः thus, श्रीघ्रम् swiftly, महाबलम् mighty, तं सुग्रीवम् to that Sugriva, गच्छ reach, राघव Rama, अद्य today, इतः from here, क्षिप्रम् quickly, गत्वा having gone, अद्रोहाय make alliance without any malice, विभावसौ the fire, दीप्यमाने is burning, तम् with him, वयस्यम् friend, कुरु you do.

Meaning

O Rama, immediately proceed today from here to mighty Sugriva. Having reached him, make him your friend without malice in the presence of burning fire.

AK-72-18Aranya Kanda 72.18

स च ते नावमन्तव्यस्सुग्रीवो वानराधिपः।।3.72.18।। कृतज्ञः कामरूपी च सहायार्थी च वीर्यवान्।

sa ca te nāvamantavyassugrīvo vānarādhipḥ||3.72.18|| kṛtajñḥ kāmarūpī ca sahāyārthī ca vīryavān|

Translation

वानराधिपः (अपि सन्) king of the monkeys, सः सुग्रीवः that Sugriva, ते by you, नावमन्तव्यः not to be insulted, कृतज्ञः a grateful one, कामरूपी च he can take any form at will, सहायार्थी च he seeks your help, वीर्यवान् strong.

Meaning

Thinking that Sugriva is only a vanara king, he should not be disrespected. He has a sense of gratitude. He can take any form at will. He is in need of your help although he is very strong.

AK-72-19Aranya Kanda 72.19

शक्तौह्यद्य युवां कर्तुं कार्यं तस्य चिकीर्षितम्।।3.72.19।। कृतार्थो वाऽकृतार्थो वा कृत्यं तव करिष्यति।

śaktauhyadya yuvāṃ kartuṃ kāryṃ tasya cikīrṣitam||3.72.19|| kṛtārtho vā'kṛtārtho vā kṛtyṃ tava kariṣyati|

Translation

युवाम् you both, अद्य now, तस्य his, चिकीर्षितम् desired, कार्यम् his work, कर्तुम् to do, शक्तौ हि you both have the ability, कृतार्थो वा whether his work is done, अकृतार्थो वा or not done, तव your, कृत्यम् work, करिष्यति he will do.

Meaning

You are both young and able to do the work he wants. Whether his work is done or not, he will fulfil your task.

AK-72-20Aranya Kanda 72.20

स ऋक्षरजसः पुत्रः पम्पामटति शङ्कितः।।.3.72.20।। भास्करस्यौरसः पुत्रो वालिना कृतकिल्बिषः।

sa ṛkṣarajasḥ putrḥ pampāmaṭati śaṅkitḥ||.3.72.20|| bhāskarasyaurasḥ putro vālinā kṛtakilbiṣḥ|

Translation

ऋक्षरजसः Riksharaja's, पुत्रः son, भास्करस्य Sungod's, औरसःपुत्रः lawful son, सः he, वालिना Valin, कृतकिल्बिषः developing enmity, शङ्कितः apprehending danger, पम्पाम् on the banks of Pampa, अटति roaming.

Meaning

Born of Riksharaja, he is the offspring of the Sungod. He has developed enmity with Vali, and is roaming about the banks of Pampa, suspecting danger from Vali.

AK-72-21Aranya Kanda 72.21

सन्निधायायुधं क्षिप्रमृष्यमूकालयं कपिम्।।3.72.21।। कुरु राघव सत्येन वयस्यं वनचारिणम्।

sannidhāyāyudhṃ kṣipramṛṣyamūkālayṃ kapim||3.72.21|| kuru rāghava satyena vayasyṃ vanacāriṇam|

Translation

राघव Rama, आयुधम् weapon, सन्निधाय after keeping ready, वनचारिणम् a wanderer in the forest, ऋष्यमूकालयम् dwelling on Rishyamuka, कपिम् monkey, सत्येन truthfully, क्षिप्रम् at once, वयस्यम् friend, कुरु make.

Meaning

O Rama, with your weapons kept ready, go to Sugriva, king of the monkeys, a resident of Rishyamuka. He is wandering in the forest. Establish friendship with him.

AK-72-22Aranya Kanda 72.22

स हि स्थानानि सर्वाणि कार्त्स्न्येन कपिकुञ्जरः।।3.72.22।। नरमांसाशिनां लोके नैपुण्यादधिगच्छति।

sa hi sthānāni sarvāṇi kārtsnyena kapikuñjarḥ||3.72.22|| naramāṃsāśināṃ loke naipuṇyādadhigacchati|

Translation

कपिकुञ्जरः foremost of monkeys, सः he, लोके in the world, नरमांसाशिनाम् of cannibals, सर्वाणि all, स्थानानि dwellings, कार्त्स्न्येन entirely, नैपुण्यात् with tact, अधिगच्छति हि will find and reach.

Meaning

He is the foremost of the monkeys. He knows well by his wisdom all the dwellingplaces of the carnivorous demons in the world.

AK-72-23Aranya Kanda 72.23

न तस्याविदितं लोकेकिञ्चिदस्ति हि राघव।।3.72.23।। यावत्सूर्यः प्रतपति सहस्रांशुररिन्दम।

na tasyāviditṃ lokekiñcidasti hi rāghava||3.72.23|| yāvatsūryḥ pratapati sahasrāṃśurarindama|

Translation

अरिन्दम O subduer of enemies, राघव Rama, सहस्रांशुः the god of a thousand rays, सूर्यः Sun, यावत् so far, प्रतपति radiates, लोके in the world, तस्य his, अविदितम् unknown, किञ्चित् hardly anything, नास्ति हि is not.

Meaning

There is nothing unknown to Sugriva in this world as far as the Sun shines, O subduer of enemies

AK-72-24Aranya Kanda 72.24

स नदीर्विपुलान्शैलान् गिरिदुर्गाणि कन्दरान्।।3.72.24।। अन्वीक्ष्य वानरैस्सार्धं पत्नीं तेऽधिगमिष्यति।

sa nadīrvipulānśailān giridurgāṇi kandarān||3.72.24|| anvīkṣya vānaraissārdhṃ patnīṃ te'dhigamiṣyati|

Translation

सः he, वानरैः सार्धम् along with monkeys, नदीः rivers, विपुलान् big, शैलान् mountains, गिरिदुर्गाणि mountain caves, कन्दरान् caverns, अन्वीक्ष्य searching, ते your, पत्नीम् consort, अधिगमिष्यति will find out.

Meaning

Along with his monkeys, he will search all rivers, mountains and caves and will find out your consort.

AK-72-25-26Aranya Kanda 72.25–26 (युग्मम्)

वानरांश्च महाकायान्प्रेषयिष्यति राघव।।3.72.25।। दिशो विचेतुं तां सीतां त्वद्वियोगेन शोचतीम्। स ज्ञास्यति वरारोहां निर्मलां रावणालये।।3.72.26।।

vānarāṃśca mahākāyānpreṣayiṣyati rāghava||3.72.25|| diśo vicetuṃ tāṃ sītāṃ tvadviyogena śocatīm| sa jñāsyati varārohāṃ nirmalāṃ rāvaṇālaye||3.72.26||

Translation

राघव Rama, त्वद्वियोगेन by separation from you, शोचतीम् brooding, तां सीताम् that Sita, विचेतुम् to search, महाकायान् gigantic, वानरांश्च monkeys, दिशः in all directions, प्रेषयिष्यति he will send, सः he, रावणालये in Ravana's home, निर्मलाम् chaste, वरारोहाम् beautiful, ज्ञास्यति will find out.

Meaning

Sugriva will find out the lady of purity and chastity brooding over you in separation in the abode of Ravana. He can send gigantic monkeys in different directions in order to search for her.

AK-72-27Aranya Kanda 72.27

स मेरुशृङ्गाग्रगतामनिन्दितां प्रविश्य पातालतलेऽपि वा श्रिताम्। प्लवङ्गमानां प्रवरस्तव प्रियां निहत्य रक्षांसि पुनः प्रदास्यति।।3.72.27।।

sa meruśṛṅgāgragatāmaninditāṃ praviśya pātālatale'pi vā śritām| plavaṅgamānāṃ pravarastava priyāṃ nihatya rakṣāṃsi punḥ pradāsyati||3.72.27||

Translation

प्लवङ्गमानाम् of monkeys, प्रवरः the best one, सः he, अनिन्दिताम् a blameless, तव प्रियाम् your dear consort, मेरुशृङ्गाग्रगता even if on top of mount Meru, पातालतले or in the nether world, श्रितां वापि or gone there also, प्रविश्य after reaching, रक्षांसि demons, निहत्य killing, पुनः again, प्रदास्यति he will restore to you.

Meaning

Sugriva, king of the monkeys, will reach the demons and restore you that blameless, beloved consort of yours, even if she is there on top of mount Meru or in the deep underworld. इत्यार्ष श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे द्विसप्ततितमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the seventysecond sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
