AK-26-1Aranya Kanda 26.1

दूषणस्तु स्वकं सैन्यं हन्यमानं निरीक्ष्य सः। सन्दिदेश महाबाहुर्भीमवेगान्दुरासदान्।।3.26.1।। राक्षसान्पञ्चसहस्रान्समरेष्वनिवर्तिनः।

dūṣaṇastu svakṃ sainyṃ hanyamānṃ nirīkṣya sḥ| sandideśa mahābāhurbhīmavegāndurāsadān||3.26.1|| rākṣasānpañcasahasrānsamareṣvanivartinḥ|

Translation

सः that, महाबाहुः mightyarmed, दूषणः Dusana, हन्यमानम् getting killed, स्वकम् his own, सैन्यम् army, निरीक्ष्य seeing, भीमवेगान् dreadfuly quick, दुरासदान् dangerous to face, समरेषु in war, अनिवर्तिनः who will not beat a retreat, पञ्च सहस्रान् five thousand, राक्षसान् demons, सन्दिदेश led.

Meaning

Mightyarmed Dusana saw the army getting killed in war. He led the forces of five thousand demons, dreadfuly quick at fighting, dangeous to face and who will not beat a retreat.

AK-26-2Aranya Kanda 26.2

ते शूलैः पट्टिशैः खङ्गै शिलावर्षैर्द्रुमैरपि।।3.26.2।। शरवर्षैरविच्छिन्नं ववर्षुस्तं समन्ततः।

te śūlaiḥ paṭṭiśaiḥ khaṅgai śilāvarṣairdrumairapi||3.26.2|| śaravarṣairavicchinnṃ vavarṣustṃ samantatḥ|

Translation

ते they, शूलैः spears, पट्टिशैः sharpedged spears, खङ्गै: swords, शिलावर्षैः by raining stones, द्रुमैरपि and with trees, शरवर्षैः by showers of arrows, अविच्छिन्नम् continuously, समन्ततः from all sides, तम् him(Rama), ववर्षुः rained.

Meaning

The demons continuously hurled at him (Rama) spears and swords and rained stones, trees and arrows from all sides

AK-26-3Aranya Kanda 26.3

स दृमाणां शिलानां च वर्षं प्राणहरं महत्।।3.26.3।। प्रतिजग्राह धर्मात्मा राघवस्तीक्ष्णसायकैः।

sa dṛmāṇāṃ śilānāṃ ca varṣṃ prāṇaharṃ mahat||3.26.3|| pratijagrāha dharmātmā rāghavastīkṣṇasāyakaiḥ|

Translation

धर्मात्मा righteous self, सः राघवः Rama, प्राणहरम् destroyers of life, महत् mighty, द्रुमाणाम् trees, शिलानां च of stones and, वर्षम् rain, तीक्ष्णसायकैः with sharp arrows, प्रतिजग्राह retaliated.

Meaning

Righteous Rama, retaliated with his sharp arrows such as the rain of trees and stones, the mighty destroyers of life.

AK-26-4Aranya Kanda 26.4

प्रतिगृह्य च तद्वर्षं निमीलित इवर्षभः।।3.26.4।। रामः क्रोधं परं भेजे वधार्थं सर्वरक्षसाम्।

pratigṛhya ca tadvarṣṃ nimīlita ivarṣabhḥ||3.26.4|| rāmḥ krodhṃ parṃ bheje vadhārthṃ sarvarakṣasām|

Translation

रामः Rama, निमीलितः closed his eyes, ऋषभः इव like a bull, तत् that, वर्षम् rain, प्रतिगृह्य retaliated, सर्वरक्षसाम् all the demons, वधार्थम् to kill, परं excessively, क्रोधम् angry, भेजे felt.

Meaning

Rama retaliated in great anger to kill without caring for the shower of weapons like a bull with its eyes closed.

AK-26-5Aranya Kanda 26.5

ततः क्रोधसमाविष्टः प्रदीप्त इव तेजसा।।3.26.5।। शरैरवाकिरत्सैन्यं सर्वतस्सहदूषणम्।

tatḥ krodhasamāviṣṭḥ pradīpta iva tejasā||3.26.5|| śarairavākiratsainyṃ sarvatassahadūṣaṇam|

Translation

ततः then, क्रोधसमाविष्टः overpowered by anger, तेजसा glow, प्रदीप्त इव as though blazing, सहदूषणम् along with Dusana, सैन्यम् army, सर्वतः all over, शरैः with arrows, अवाकिरत् filled.

Meaning

Overpowered by anger, Rama, with a blazing glow, covered Dusana and his army with his arrows.

AK-26-6Aranya Kanda 26.6

ततस्सेनापतिः क्रुद्धो दूषणश्शत्रुदूषणः।।3.26.6।। शरैरशनिकल्पैस्तं राघवं समवाकिरत्।

tatassenāpatiḥ kruddho dūṣaṇaśśatrudūṣaṇḥ||3.26.6|| śarairaśanikalpaistṃ rāghavṃ samavākirat|

Translation

ततः thereafter, सेनापतिः chief of the army, दूषणः Dusana, क्रुद्धः angry, अशनिकल्पैः comparable to thunderbolt, शरैः with arrows, तं राघवम् to that Rama, समवाकिरत् charged from everywhere.

Meaning

Thereafter Dusana, chief of the army, angrily released at Rama equally powerful arrows comparable to thunderbolt.

AK-26-7Aranya Kanda 26.7

ततो रामस्सुसङ्कृद्धः क्षुरेणास्य महद्धनुः।।3.26.7।। चिच्छेद समरे वीरश्चतुर्भिश्चतुरो हयान्।

tato rāmassusaṅkṛddhḥ kṣureṇāsya mahaddhanuḥ||3.26.7|| ciccheda samare vīraścaturbhiścaturo hayān|

Translation

ततः thereafter, सुसङ्कृद्धः became furious, समरे in war, वीरः hero, रामः Rama, क्षुरेण with a swordlike, अस्य his, महत् great, धनुः bow, चतुर्भिः four more, चतुरः four, हयान् horses, चिच्छेद cut to pieces.

Meaning

Heroic Rama, mighty angry, then, broke the big bow of Dusana, with his swordlike arrow. And with a series of four arrows cut his four horses to pieces.

AK-26-8Aranya Kanda 26.8

हत्वा चाश्वान्शरैस्तीक्ष्णैरर्धचन्द्रेण सारथेः।।3.26.8।। शिरो जहार तद्रक्षस्त्रिभिर्विव्याध वक्षसि।

hatvā cāśvānśaraistīkṣṇairardhacandreṇa sāratheḥ||3.26.8|| śiro jahāra tadrakṣastribhirvivyādha vakṣasi|

Translation

तीक्ष्णैः sharp ones, शरैः arrows, अश्वान् horses, हत्वा killed, अर्धचन्द्रेण with an arrow of the shape of the cresunt moon, सारथेः charioteer's, शिरः head, जहार cut, त्रिभिः with three arrows, तत् that, रक्षः demon( Dushana), वक्षसि chest, विव्याध pierced.

Meaning

After killing the horses with sharp arrows Rama severed the charioteer's head with an arrow of the shape of the crescent moon and pierced Dusana's chest with a set of three arrows.

AK-26-9-11Aranya Kanda 26.9–11 (त्रिकम्)

स च्छिन्नधन्वा विरथो हताश्वो हतसारथिः।।3.26.9।। जग्राह गिरिशृङ्गाभं परिघं रोमहर्षणम्। वेष्टितं काञ्चनैः पट्टैर्देवसैन्यप्रमर्दनम्।।3.26.10।। आयसैश्शङ्कुभिस्तीक्ष्णैः कीर्णं परवसोक्षितम्। वज्राशनिसमस्पर्शं परगोपुरदारणम्।।3.26.11।।

sa cchinnadhanvā viratho hatāśvo hatasārathiḥ||3.26.9|| jagrāha giriśṛṅgābhṃ parighṃ romaharṣaṇam| veṣṭitṃ kāñcanaiḥ paṭṭairdevasainyapramardanam||3.26.10|| āyasaiśśaṅkubhistīkṣṇaiḥ kīrṇṃ paravasokṣitam| vajrāśanisamasparśṃ paragopuradāraṇam||3.26.11||

Translation

छिन्नधन्वा with broken bow, विरथः no chariot, हताश्वः horses killled, हतसारथिः charioteer killed, सः he, गिरिशृङ्गाभम् looking like a huge mountain top, रोमहर्षणम् causing horripilation, काञ्चनैः with golden, पट्टैः with bands, वेष्टितम् bound, देवसैन्यप्रमर्दनम् that which can crush even gods' army, तीक्ष्णैः sharp, आयसैः made of iron, शङ्कुभिः with nails, कीर्णम् covered, परवसोक्षितम् sprinkled with enemy's marrow, वज्राशनिसमस्पर्शम् like the touch of thunderbolt, परगोपुरदारणम् that which can break open enemies fort, परिघम् spear, जग्राह took up .

Meaning

With his bow and chariot broken, charioteer and horses killed, Dusana took up a spear in his hand that appeared like a huge mountain top. Bound by golden bands, covered the iron nails, wetted with the enemy's marrow it created a horripilation. It appeared as though it could crush the army of gods and render the enemy powerless. It carried the killing touch of the thunderbolt and could break open the enemy's fort.

AK-26-12Aranya Kanda 26.12

तं महोरगसङ्काशं प्रगृह्य परिघं रणे। दूषणोऽभ्यद्रवद्रामं क्रूरकर्मा निशाचरः।।3.26.12।।

tṃ mahoragasaṅkāśṃ pragṛhya parighṃ raṇe| dūṣaṇo'bhyadravadrāmṃ krūrakarmā niśācarḥ||3.26.12||

Translation

क्रूरकर्मा cruel, निशाचरः demon, दूषणः Dusana, रणे in war, महोरगसङ्काशम् mighty serpent like, तं परिघम् spear, प्रगृह्य holding, रामम् at Rama, अभ्यद्रवत् went forward.

Meaning

With the spear that looked like a mighty serpent, Dusana, the cruel demon, advanced towards Rama.

AK-26-13Aranya Kanda 26.13

तस्याभिपतमानस्य दूषणस्य स राघवः। द्वाभ्यां शराभ्यां चिच्छेद सहस्ताभरणौ भुजौ।।3.26.13।।

tasyābhipatamānasya dūṣaṇasya sa rāghavḥ| dvābhyāṃ śarābhyāṃ ciccheda sahastābharaṇau bhujau||3.26.13||

Translation

सः राघवः that Rama, अभिपतमानस्य pouncing on him, तस्य दूषणस्य that Dusana, सहस्ताभरणौ adorned with armlets, भुजौ द्वाभ्याम् with two, शराभ्याम् with arrows, चिच्छेद cut.

Meaning

Seeing Dusana going to pounce upon him, Rama cut off with two arrows both his arms adorned with armlets.

AK-26-14Aranya Kanda 26.14

भ्रष्टस्तस्य महाकायः पपात रणमूर्धनि। परिघश्छिन्नहस्तस्य शक्रध्वज इवाग्रतः।।3.26.14।।

bhraṣṭastasya mahākāyḥ papāta raṇamūrdhani| parighaśchinnahastasya śakradhvaja ivāgratḥ||3.26.14||

Translation

रणमूर्धनि on the battle front, छिन्नहस्तस्य of one whose hands were cut off, तस्य his, महाकायः huge body, परिघः spear, भ्रष्टः fallen down, शक्रध्वजः इव like the banner of Indra, अग्रतः in front, पपात fell down.

Meaning

With the hands amputated, his huge spear, like the banner of Indra, slipped off his hands and fell down on the ground on the battle front.

AK-26-15Aranya Kanda 26.15

स कराभ्यां विकीर्णाभ्यां पपात भुवि दूषणः। विषाणाभ्यां विशीर्णाभ्यां मनस्वीव महागजः।।3.26.15।।

sa karābhyāṃ vikīrṇābhyāṃ papāta bhuvi dūṣaṇḥ| viṣāṇābhyāṃ viśīrṇābhyāṃ manasvīva mahāgajḥ||3.26.15||

Translation

सः दूषणः Dusana, विकीर्णाभ्याम् scattered, कराभ्याम् with both hands, विशीर्णाभ्याम् shattered to pieces, विषाणाभ्याम् with two tusks, मनस्वी proud one, महागजः इव like a mighty elephant, भुवि ground, पपात fell down.

Meaning

Dusana fell down on the ground with broken hands like a proud elephant with both his tusks shattered.

AK-26-16Aranya Kanda 26.16

तं दृष्ट्वा पतितं भूमौ दूषणं निहतं रणे। साधुसाध्विति काकुत्स्थं सर्वभूतान्यपूजयन्।।3.26.16।।

tṃ dṛṣṭvā patitṃ bhūmau dūṣaṇṃ nihatṃ raṇe| sādhusādhviti kākutsthṃ sarvabhūtānyapūjayan||3.26.16||

Translation

रणे in battle, निहतम् killed, भूमौ on the ground, पतितम् fallen down, तं दूषणम् that Dusana, दृष्ट्वा seeing, सर्वभूतानि all beings, काकुत्स्थम् Rama, साधु साधु इति saying, 'well done well done', अपूजयन् hailed.

Meaning

Seeing Dusaana collapse dead on the ground, all beings hailed Rama, saying, 'Well done, well done'.

AK-26-17Aranya Kanda 26.17

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे क्रुद्धास्त्रयः सेनाग्रयायिनः। संहृत्याभ्यद्रवन् रामं मृत्युपाशावपाशिताः।।3.26.17।। महाकपालः स्थूलाक्षः प्रमाथी च महाबलः।

etasminnantare kruddhāstrayḥ senāgrayāyinḥ| sṃhṛtyābhyadravan rāmṃ mṛtyupāśāvapāśitāḥ||3.26.17|| mahākapālḥ sthūlākṣḥ pramāthī ca mahābalḥ|

Translation

एतस्मिन् अन्तरे meanwhile, क्रुद्धाः angry , महाकपालः Mahakapala, स्थूलाक्षः Stulaksha, महाबलः mighty, प्रमाथी च Pramathi, त्रयः all three, सेनाग्रयायिनः army chiefs, मृत्युपाशावपाशिताः bound by the noose of death, संहृत्य all together, रामम् Rama, अभ्यद्रवन् ran towards.

Meaning

Meanwhile all the three army chiefs, Mahakapala, Sthulaksha, and the mighty Pramathi ran towards Rama in anger, bound (as though) by the noose of death.

AK-26-18Aranya Kanda 26.18

महाकपालो विपुलं शूलमुद्यम्य राक्षसः।।3.26.18।। स्थूलाक्षः पट्टिसं गृह्य प्रमाथी च परश्वधम्।

mahākapālo vipulṃ śūlamudyamya rākṣasḥ||3.26.18|| sthūlākṣḥ paṭṭisṃ gṛhya pramāthī ca paraśvadham|

Translation

महाकपालः Mahakapala, विपुलम् huge, शूलम् spear, उद्यम्य lifted up, स्थूलाक्षः Sthulaksha, राक्षसः demon, पट्टिसम् sharpedged spear, गृह्य holding, प्रमाथी च and Pramathi too, परश्वधं च with a battleaxe.

Meaning

Mahakapala had a huge spear, Sthulaksha, a sharpedged spear and Pramathi, a battleaxe.

AK-26-19Aranya Kanda 26.19

दृष्ट्वैवापततस्तूर्णं राघवस्सायकैश्शितैः।।3.26.19।। तीक्ष्णाग्रैः प्रतिजग्राह सम्प्राप्तानतिथीनिव।

dṛṣṭvaivāpatatastūrṇṃ rāghavassāyakaiśśitaiḥ||3.26.19|| tīkṣṇāgraiḥ pratijagrāha samprāptānatithīniva|

Translation

राघवः Rama, तूर्णम् quickly, आपततः attacking, दृष्ट्वैव on seeing, शितैः with sharp weapons, तीक्ष्णाग्रैः pointed , सायकैः with arrows, सम्प्राप्तान् those who arrived, अतिथीनिव like guests, प्रतिजग्राह received.

Meaning

On seeing them rushing to attack him with sharp weapons, Rama received them quickly with pointed arrows as though they were guests.

AK-26-20-21Aranya Kanda 26.20–21 (युग्मम्)

महाकपालस्य शिरश्चिच्छेद परमेषुभिः।।3.26.20।। असङ्ख्येयैस्तु बाणौघैः प्रममाथ प्रमाथिनम्। स पपात हतो भूमौ विटपीव महाद्रुमः।।3.26.21।।

mahākapālasya śiraściccheda parameṣubhiḥ||3.26.20|| asaṅkhyeyaistu bāṇaughaiḥ pramamātha pramāthinam| sa papāta hato bhūmau viṭapīva mahādrumḥ||3.26.21||

Translation

परमेषुभिः sharp arrows, महाकपालस्य Mahakapala's, शिरः head, चिच्छेद cut to pieces, असङ्ख्येयैः with innumerable, बाणौघैः arrows, प्रमाथिनम् Pramathi also, प्रममाथ killed, सः he, हतः dead, विटपी with branches, महाद्रुमः इव like a huge tree, भूमौ on the ground, पपात fell down.

Meaning

Mahakapala's head was cut to pieces with sharp arrows and Pramathi was killed with a countless series of arrows. Pramathi's body, like a huge tree with many branches collapsed on the ground.

AK-26-22Aranya Kanda 26.22

स्थूलाक्षस्याक्षिणी तीक्ष्णैः पूरयामास सायकैः। दूषणस्यानुगान्पञ्चसहस्रान्कुपितः क्षणात्।।3.26.22।। बाणौघैः पञ्चसाहस्रैरनयद्यमसादनम्।

sthūlākṣasyākṣiṇī tīkṣṇaiḥ pūrayāmāsa sāyakaiḥ| dūṣaṇasyānugānpañcasahasrānkupitḥ kṣaṇāt||3.26.22|| bāṇaughaiḥ pañcasāhasrairanayadyamasādanam|

Translation

स्थूलाक्षस्य Sthulaksha's, अक्षिणी eyes, तीक्ष्णैः with sharp, सायकैः with arrows, पूरयामास filled, कुपितः an angry, पञ्चसाहस्रैः with five thousand, बाणौघैः with arrows, दूषणस्य Dusana's, पञ्चसाहस्रान् five thousand, अनुगान् followers, क्षणात् in a moment, यमसादनम् to the abode of Yama, अनयत् sent.

Meaning

Rama filled the eyes of Sthulaksha with sharp arrows, and in anger shot five thousand arrows at the five thousand followers of Dusana in a moment and sent them to the abode of Yama.

AK-26-23Aranya Kanda 26.23

दूषणं निहतं दृष्ट्वा तस्य चैव पदानुगान्।।3.26.23।। व्यादिदेश खरः क्रुद्धः सेनाध्यक्षान्महाबलान्।

dūṣaṇṃ nihatṃ dṛṣṭvā tasya caiva padānugān||3.26.23|| vyādideśa kharḥ kruddhḥ senādhyakṣānmahābalān|

Translation

दूषणं Dusana, निहतम् killed, तस्य his, पदानुगान् followers, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, खरः Khara, क्रुद्धः angry , महाबलान् extremely strong, सेनाध्यक्षान् chiefs of the army, व्यादिदेश commanded.

Meaning

Seeing Dusana and his followers killed, enraged Khara commanded his extremely strong army chiefs this way:

AK-26-24-25Aranya Kanda 26.24–25 (युग्मम्)

अयं विनिहतस्संख्ये दूषणस्सपदानुगः।।3.26.24।। महत्या सेनया सार्धं युद्ध्वा रामं कुमानुषम्। शस्त्रैर्नानाविधाकारैर्हनध्वं सर्वराक्षसाः।।3.26.25।।

ayṃ vinihatassṃkhye dūṣaṇassapadānugḥ||3.26.24|| mahatyā senayā sārdhṃ yuddhvā rāmṃ kumānuṣam| śastrairnānāvidhākārairhanadhvṃ sarvarākṣasāḥ||3.26.25||

Translation

अयं this one, सपदानुगः along with his followers, दूषणः Dooshana, सङ्ख्ये in battle, (वि)निहतः killed, सर्व राक्षसाः all the demons, महत्या with great, सेनयासार्धम् along with army, युद्ध्वा after fighting, नानाविधाकारैः different kinds, शस्त्रैः weapons, कुमानुषम् wicked human being, रामम् Rama, हनध्वम् should kill.

Meaning

Dusana and his followers are killed in the battle. You, all the demons, along with your great army and different kinds of weapons should kill that wicked human being, Rama.

AK-26-26-28Aranya Kanda 26.26–28 (त्रिकम्)

एवमुक्त्वा खरः क्रुद्धो राममेवाभिदुद्रुवे। श्येनगामी पृथुग्रीवो यज्ञशत्रुर्विहङ्गमः।।3.26.26।। दुर्जयः करवीराक्षः परुषः कालकार्मुकः। मेघमाली महामाली सर्पास्यो रुधिराशनः।।3.26.27।। द्वादशैते महावीर्या बलाध्यक्षास्ससैनिकाः। राममेवाभ्यधावन्त विसृजन्तश्शरोत्तमान्।।3.26.28।।

evamuktvā kharḥ kruddho rāmamevābhidudruve| śyenagāmī pṛthugrīvo yajñaśatrurvihaṅgamḥ||3.26.26|| durjayḥ karavīrākṣḥ paruṣḥ kālakārmukḥ| meghamālī mahāmālī sarpāsyo rudhirāśanḥ||3.26.27|| dvādaśaite mahāvīryā balādhyakṣāssasainikāḥ| rāmamevābhyadhāvanta visṛjantaśśarottamān||3.26.28||

Translation

खरः Khara, एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having said, क्रुद्धः angry one, राममेव towards Rama, अभिदुद्रुवे ran, श्येनगामी Syenagami, पृथुग्रीवः Pruthugriva, यज्ञशत्रुः Yajnasatru, विहङ्गमः Vihangama, दुर्जयः Durjaya, करवीराक्षः Karaveeraksha, परुषः Parusha, कालकार्मुकः Kalakarmuka, मेघमाली Meghamali, महामाली Mahamali, सर्पास्य: Sarpasya, रुधिराशनः Rudhirasana, एते these, महावीर्याः mighty heroes, द्वादश twelve, बलाध्यक्षाः army chiefs, ससैनिकाः with army, शरोत्तमान् sharpest of arrows, विसृजन्तः releasing, राममेव towards Rama alone, अभ्यधावन्त ran forward.

Meaning

Having spoken thus, angry Khara ran towards Rama. Syenagami, Pruthugriva, Yajnasatru, Vihanga, Durjaya, Karaveeraksha, Parusha, Kalakarmuka, Meghamali, Mahamali, Sarpasya, Rudhirasanaall these twelve valiant army chiefs along with their forces rushed towards Rama, releasing the sharpest arrows at him.

AK-26-29Aranya Kanda 26.29

ततः पावकसङ्काशैर्हेमवज्रविभूषितैः। जघान शेषं तेजस्वी तस्य सैन्यस्य सायकैः।।3.26.29।।

tatḥ pāvakasaṅkāśairhemavajravibhūṣitaiḥ| jaghāna śeṣṃ tejasvī tasya sainyasya sāyakaiḥ||3.26.29||

Translation

तेजस्वी powerful Rama, ततः then, पावकसङ्काशैः glowing like fire, हेमवज्रविभूषितैः studded with gold and diamonds, सायकैः arrows, तस्य his, सैन्यस्य army's, शेषम् remaining, जघान slayed.

Meaning

Powerful Rama thereafter slayed the remaining army with his weapons studded with gold and diamonds and glowing like fire.

AK-26-30Aranya Kanda 26.30

ते रुक्मपुङ्खा विशिखास्सधूमा इव पावकाः। निजघ्नुस्तानि रक्षांसि वज्रा इव महाद्रुमान्।।3.26.30।।

te rukmapuṅkhā viśikhāssadhūmā iva pāvakāḥ| nijaghnustāni rakṣāṃsi vajrā iva mahādrumān||3.26.30||

Translation

रुक्मपुङ्खाः goldtipped arrows, सधूमाः covered with smoke, पावकाः इव like fire, ते विशिखाः tips of arrows, वज्राः thunderbolts, महाद्रुमानिव like huge trees, तानि those, रक्षांसि demons, निजघ्नुः shattered.

Meaning

The goldtipped arrows which resembled fire covered with smoke shattered the army of demons like huge trees knocked down by thunder.

AK-26-31Aranya Kanda 26.31

रक्षसां तु शतं रामश्शतेनैकेन कर्णिना। सहस्रं च सहस्रेण जघान रणमूर्धनि।।3.26.31।।

rakṣasāṃ tu śatṃ rāmaśśatenaikena karṇinā| sahasrṃ ca sahasreṇa jaghāna raṇamūrdhani||3.26.31||

Translation

रामः Rama, रक्षसाम् of demons, शतम् one hundred, एकेन कर्णिना by a single stroke, शतेन one hundred, सहस्रम् thousand, सहस्रेण thousand, रणमूर्धनि on the battle front, जघान killed.

Meaning

Rama killed a hundred demons with one hundred arrows by a single stroke. The same way he killed a thousand of them with a thousand arrows on the battle front.

AK-26-32Aranya Kanda 26.32

तैर्भिन्नवर्माभरणाश्छिन्नभिन्नशरासनाः। निपेतुश्शोणितादिग्धा धरण्यां रजनीचराः।।3.26.32।।

tairbhinnavarmābharaṇāśchinnabhinnaśarāsanāḥ| nipetuśśoṇitādigdhā dharaṇyāṃ rajanīcarāḥ||3.26.32||

Translation

तैः by them, भिन्नवर्माभरणाः with broken shields and ornaments, छिन्नभिन्नशरासनाः the bows broken to pieces, रजनीचराः demons, शोणिता दिग्धाः smeared with blood, धरण्याम् on the ground, निपेतुः fell.

Meaning

The demons fell down on the ground with their shields and ornaments broken, their bows stained with blood splintered.

AK-26-33Aranya Kanda 26.33

तैर्मुक्तकेशैस्समरे पतितैश्शोणितोक्षितैः। आस्तीर्णा वसुधा कृत्स्ना महावेदिः कुशैरिव।।3.26.33।।

tairmuktakeśaissamare patitaiśśoṇitokṣitaiḥ| āstīrṇā vasudhā kṛtsnā mahāvediḥ kuśairiva||3.26.33||

Translation

समरे in the battle, पतितैः by those fallen down, मुक्तकेशैः loose hair, शोणितोक्षितैः by those wet with blood, तैः those, कृत्स्ना entire, वसुधा ground, महावेदिः a great sacrificial altar, कुशैरिव like the Kusa grass, आस्तीर्णा was spread all over.

Meaning

The entire ground was littered with bodies of demons fallen in the battle with loose hair and with drops of blood on them looking like a great sacrificial altar strewn all over with kusa grass.

AK-26-34Aranya Kanda 26.34

क्षणेन तु महाघोरं वनं निहतराक्षसम्। बभूव निरयप्रख्यं मांसशोणितकर्दमम्।।3.26.34।।

kṣaṇena tu mahāghorṃ vanṃ nihatarākṣasam| babhūva nirayaprakhyṃ māṃsaśoṇitakardamam||3.26.34||

Translation

निहतराक्षसम् with demons killed, वनम् the forest, क्षणेन तु in a moment, महाघोरम् very dreadful, मांसशोणितकर्दमम् soil soaked with the mud of flesh and blood, निरयप्रख्य like a hell, बभूव appeared.

Meaning

With the slaughtered bodies of demons lying on the ground, the forest in a moment looked very dreadful like hell with the mud of soil soaked with flesh and blood.

AK-26-35Aranya Kanda 26.35

चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम्। हतान्येकेन रामेण मानुषेण पदातिना।।3.26.35।।

caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām| hatānyekena rāmeṇa mānuṣeṇa padātinā||3.26.35||

Translation

मानुषेण by a human being, पदातिना going on foot, रामेण Rama, एकेन alone, भीमकर्मणाम् of formidable acts, रक्षसाम् demons, चतुर्दश fourteen, सहस्राणि thousands, हतानि were killed.

Meaning

Fourteen thousand formidable demons were killed by Rama, a pedestrian human, singlehanded.

AK-26-36Aranya Kanda 26.36

तस्य सैन्यस्य सर्वस्य खरश्शेषो महारथः। राक्षसस्त्रिशिराश्चैव रामश्च रिपुसूदनः।।3.26.36।।

tasya sainyasya sarvasya kharaśśeṣo mahārathḥ| rākṣasastriśirāścaiva rāmaśca ripusūdanḥ||3.26.36||

Translation

महारथः great warrior, खरः Khara, राक्षसः demon, त्रिशिराः Trisira, तस्य सैन्सस्य सर्वस्य of that entire army, शेषः were remanant, रिपुसूदनः destroyer of foes, रामश्च Rama also.

Meaning

Of that entire army great warrior Khara,Trisira and Rama, destroyer of foes alone remained.

AK-26-37Aranya Kanda 26.37

शेषा हता महासत्वा राक्षसा रणमूर्धनि। घोरा दुर्विषहाः सर्वे लक्ष्मणस्याग्रजेन ते।।3.26.37।।

śeṣā hatā mahāsatvā rākṣasā raṇamūrdhani| ghorā durviṣahāḥ sarve lakṣmaṇasyāgrajena te||3.26.37||

Translation

महासत्त्वाः mighty, घोराः dreadful, दुर्विषहाः intolerable, सर्वे all, शेषाः the remaining, ते they, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, अग्रजेन by the elder brother, रणमूर्धनि on the battle front, हताः were killed.

Meaning

The rest of the mighty, dreadful, intolerable demons were killed on the war front by Rama, elder brother to Lakshmana.

AK-26-38Aranya Kanda 26.38

ततस्तु तद्भीमबलं महाहवे समीक्ष्य रामेण हतं बलीयसा। रथेन रामं महता खरस्तदा समाससादेन्द्र इवोद्यताशनिः।।3.26.38।।

tatastu tadbhīmabalṃ mahāhave samīkṣya rāmeṇa hatṃ balīyasā| rathena rāmṃ mahatā kharastadā samāsasādendra ivodyatāśaniḥ||3.26.38||

Translation

ततः thereafter, खरः Khara, महाहवे in the great fight, बलीयसा by the mighty, रामेण by Rama, हतम् killed, तत् that, भीमबलम् formidable army, समीक्ष्य seeing, तदा then, उद्यताशनिः raised thunderbolt, इन्द्र इव like Indra, महता with a great, रथेन chariot, रामम् Rama, समाससाद went forward.

Meaning

Thereafter seeing the formidable army killed by mighty Rama, Khara lifted a thunderbolt like Indra, and advanced towards Rama in a great chariot. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वालमिकिय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे षङ्विंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the twentysixth sarga in Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
