AK-25-1Aranya Kanda 25.1

अवष्टब्धधनुं रामं क्रुद्धं च रिपुघातिनम्। ददर्शाऽश्रममागम्य खरस्सह पुरस्सरैः।।3.25.1।।

avaṣṭabdhadhanuṃ rāmṃ kruddhṃ ca ripughātinam| dadarśā'śramamāgamya kharassaha purassaraiḥ||3.25.1||

Translation

खरः Khara, पुरस्सरैः सह accompanied by the pilot party, आश्रमम् to the hermitage, आगम्य arrived, अवष्टब्धधनुम् holding the bow, क्रुद्धम् angry, रिपुघातिनम् destroyer of the enemy, रामम् Rama, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Khara accompanied by his pilot party arrived at the hermitage of Rama, the destroyer of enemies and saw him in fury, standing ready with his bow.

AK-25-2Aranya Kanda 25.2

तं दृष्ट्वा सशरं चापमुद्यम्य खरनिस्स्वनम्। रामस्याभिमुखं सूतं चोद्यतामित्यचोदयत्।।3.25.2।।

tṃ dṛṣṭvā saśarṃ cāpamudyamya kharanissvanam| rāmasyābhimukhṃ sūtṃ codyatāmityacodayat||3.25.2||

Translation

तम् him, दृष्ट्वा seeing, खरनिस्स्वनम् producing terrible sound, सशरम् with the arrow, चापम् bow, उद्यम्य lifted, रामस्य Rama's, अभिमुखम् facing him, चोद्यताम् drive (the chariot), इति thus, सूतम् to charioteer, अचोदयत् ordered to go.

Meaning

On seeing Rama, Khara held his terribly twanging bow and arrow, stood facing him, and ordered the charioteer to drive towards him.

AK-25-3Aranya Kanda 25.3

स खरस्याज्ञया सूतस्तुरगान् समचोदयत्। यत्र रामो महाबाहुरेको चुन्वन्स्थितो धनुः।।3.25.3।।

sa kharasyājñayā sūtasturagān samacodayat| yatra rāmo mahābāhureko cunvansthito dhanuḥ||3.25.3||

Translation

सः that, सूतः charioteer, खरस्य Khara's, आज्ञया by the order, महाबाहुः mightyarmed, एकः alone, रामः Rama, धनुः bow, चुन्वन् selecting, स्थितः stood, तुरगान् horses, समचोदयत् drove.

Meaning

Commanded by Khara, the charioteer also urged the horses towards the mightyarmed Rama standing alone and wielding the bow.

AK-25-4Aranya Kanda 25.4

तं तु निष्पतितं दृष्ट्वा सर्वे ते रजनीचराः। नर्दमाना महानादं सचिवाः पर्यवारयन्।।3.25.4।।

tṃ tu niṣpatitṃ dṛṣṭvā sarve te rajanīcarāḥ| nardamānā mahānādṃ sacivāḥ paryavārayan||3.25.4||

Translation

निष्पतितम् fell upon, तम् him, दृष्ट्वा seeing, सचिवाः ministers, ते they, सर्वे all, रजनीचराः demons, महानादम् very loud sound, नर्दमानाः while roaring, पर्यवारयन् surrounded.

Meaning

Seeing Khara attacking (Rama) all the demon ministers surrounded him roaring.

AK-25-5Aranya Kanda 25.5

स तेषां यातुधानानां मध्ये रथगतः खरः। बभूव मध्ये ताराणां लोहिताङ्ग इवोदितः।।3.25.5।।

sa teṣāṃ yātudhānānāṃ madhye rathagatḥ kharḥ| babhūva madhye tārāṇāṃ lohitāṅga ivoditḥ||3.25.5||

Translation

तेषां यातुधानाम् of the demons, मध्ये in the midst, रथगतः seated on a chariot, खरः Khara, ताराणाम् of stars, मध्ये in the middle, उदितः risen, लोहिताङ्गः the planet Mars, इव like, बभूव looked.

Meaning

Seated on a chariot in the midst of the demons, Khara looked like the rising Mars in the middle of the stars.

AK-25-6Aranya Kanda 25.6

ततश्शरसहस्रेण राममप्रतिमौजसम्। अर्दयित्वा महानादं ननाद समरे खरः।।3.25.6।।

tataśśarasahasreṇa rāmamapratimaujasam| ardayitvā mahānādṃ nanāda samare kharḥ||3.25.6||

Translation

ततः then, खरः Khara, समरे in war, शरसहस्रेण with a thousand arrows, अप्रतिमौजसम् of immeasureable prowess, रामम् to Rama, अर्दयित्वा striking, महानादम् a loud voice, ननाद made.

Meaning

Khara struck Rama of immeasurable prowess with a thousand arrows and roared loudly.

AK-25-7Aranya Kanda 25.7

ततस्तं भीमधन्वानं क्रुद्धाः सर्वे निशाचराः। रामं नानाविधैः शस्स्रैरभ्यवर्षन्त दुर्जयम्।।3.25.7।।

tatastṃ bhīmadhanvānṃ kruddhāḥ sarve niśācarāḥ| rāmṃ nānāvidhaiḥ śassrairabhyavarṣanta durjayam||3.25.7||

Translation

ततः thereafter, सर्वे all, क्रुद्धाः angry, निशाचराः demons, भीमधन्वानम् wielder of the fierce bow, दुर्जयम् invincible, तं रामम् to that Rama, नानाविधैः with many kinds of, शस्स्रैः weapons, अभ्यवर्षन्त rained.

Meaning

Thereafter all the infuriated demons showered on invincible Rama, wielder of a fierce bow, many kinds of weapons.

AK-25-8Aranya Kanda 25.8

मुद्गरैः पट्टसैश्शूलैः प्रासैः खङ्गै परश्वथैः। राक्षसास्समरे रामं निजघ्नू रोषतत्पराः।।3.25.8।।

mudgaraiḥ paṭṭasaiśśūlaiḥ prāsaiḥ khaṅgai paraśvathaiḥ| rākṣasāssamare rāmṃ nijaghnū roṣatatparāḥ||3.25.8||

Translation

राक्षसाः demons, रोषतत्पराः overtaken by anger, मुद्गरैः with hammers, पट्टसैः with spears, शूलैः with spikes, प्रासैः with barbed missiles, खङ्गै: with swords, परश्वधः battleaxes, समरे in war, रामम् to Rama, निजघ्नुः continously hurled.

Meaning

Overtaken by anger, the demons continuously hurled at Rama hammers, spears, spikes, barbed missiles, swords and battleaxes.

AK-25-9Aranya Kanda 25.9

ते वलाहसङ्काशा महानादा महौजसः। अभ्यधावन्त काकुत्स्थं रथैर्वाजिभिरेव च।।3.25.9।। गजैः पर्वतकूटाभै रामं युद्धे जिघांसवः।

te valāhasaṅkāśā mahānādā mahaujasḥ| abhyadhāvanta kākutsthṃ rathairvājibhireva ca||3.25.9|| gajaiḥ parvatakūṭābhai rāmṃ yuddhe jighāṃsavḥ|

Translation

वलाहकसङ्काशाः resembling clouds, महानादाः with huge uproar, महौजसः very powerful, ते demons, रथैः on chariots, वाजिभिरेव च on horses and, पर्वतकूटाभैः looking like tops of mountains, गजैः by elephants, युद्धे in war, जिघांसवः eager to kill, रामम् to Rama, अभ्यधावन्त ran towards.

Meaning

Very powerful demons like huge clouds roared, eager to kill Rama in war. They ran forward on chariots, horses and tall elephants, looking like mountain tops.

AK-25-10Aranya Kanda 25.10

ते रामे शरवर्षाणि व्यसृजन् रक्षसां गणाः।।3.25.10।। शैलेन्द्रमिव धाराभिर्वर्षमाणा वलाहकाः।

te rāme śaravarṣāṇi vyasṛjan rakṣasāṃ gaṇāḥ||3.25.10|| śailendramiva dhārābhirvarṣamāṇā valāhakāḥ|

Translation

ते they, रक्षसाम् of demons, गणाः battalions, रामे on Rama, वर्षमाणाः raining, वलाहकाः clouds, धाराभिः by downpour, शैलेन्द्रमिव like moutains, शरवर्षाणि rain of arrows, व्यसृजन् sent forth.

Meaning

The battalions of demons sent down streams of arrows on Rama just like clouds downpour on mountains.

AK-25-11Aranya Kanda 25.11

स तैः परिवृतो घोरैः राघवो रक्षसां गणैः।।3.25.11।। तिथिष्वि महादेवो वृत परिषदाङ्गणै

sa taiḥ parivṛto ghoraiḥ rāghavo rakṣasāṃ gaṇaiḥ||3.25.11|| tithiṣvi mahādevo vṛta pariṣadāṅgaṇai

Translation

स: that, राघवः Rama, घोरैः terrible, रक्षसां गणैः by hordes of demons, परिवृत: surrounded, महादेवः Lord Siva, वृतः surrounded, परिषदाङ्गणैः with hosts of retinues, तिथिष्वि at dusk.

Meaning

Surrounded by the terrible demons Rama appeared like Lord Siva at dusk with hosts of his retinues arounds.

AK-25-12Aranya Kanda 25.12

तानि मुक्तानि शस्त्राणि यातुधानैस्सराघवः। प्रतिजग्राह विशिखैर्नद्योघानिव सागरः।।3.25.12।।

tāni muktāni śastrāṇi yātudhānaissarāghavḥ| pratijagrāha viśikhairnadyoghāniva sāgarḥ||3.25.12||

Translation

सः that, राघवः Rama, यातुधानैः by the demons, मुक्तानि released, तानि those, शस्त्राणि weapons, सागरः sea, नद्योघानिव like the flow of rivers, विशिखैः with arrows, प्रतिजग्राह resisted.

Meaning

Rama resisted the weapons released by the demons like the sea, the inflow of river waters.

AK-25-13Aranya Kanda 25.13

स तैः प्रहरणैर्घोरैर्भिन्नगात्रो न विव्यथे। रामः प्रदीप्तैर्बहुभिर्वज्रैरिव महाचलः।।3.25.13।।

sa taiḥ praharaṇairghorairbhinnagātro na vivyathe| rāmḥ pradīptairbahubhirvajrairiva mahācalḥ||3.25.13||

Translation

घोरैः by the dreadful, प्रहरणै by weapons, तैः by those, भिन्नगात्रः his limbs being hit, सः रामः that Rama, प्रदीपैः by the glowing, बहुभिः by many, वज्रैः by thunderbolts, महाचल इव like the great mountain, न विव्यथे was not hurt.

Meaning

Rama remained unhurt like a great mountain struck by many glowing thunderbolts. He felt no pain even though his limbs were hit by the dreadful weapons.

AK-25-14Aranya Kanda 25.14

स विद्धः क्षतजादिग्धः सर्वगात्रेषु राघवः। बभूव रामः सन्ध्याभ्रैर्दिवाकर इवावृतः।।3.25.14।।

sa viddhḥ kṣatajādigdhḥ sarvagātreṣu rāghavḥ| babhūva rāmḥ sandhyābhrairdivākara ivāvṛtḥ||3.25.14||

Translation

विद्ध: wounded, सर्वगात्रेषु all over the body, क्षतजादिग्धः bleeding through the wounds, राघवः Rama, सः रामः that Rama, सन्ध्याभ्रैः by evening clouds, आवृतः surrounded, दिवाकरः इव like the Sun, बभूव became (appeared).

Meaning

Wounded all over the body, bleeding through the wounds caused by weapons, Rama looked like the evening Sun covered with clouds.

AK-25-15Aranya Kanda 25.15

विषेदुर्देवगन्धर्वास्सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः। एकं सहस्रैर्भहुभिस्तदा दृष्ट्वा समावृतम्।।3.25.15।।

viṣedurdevagandharvāssiddhāśca paramarṣayḥ| ekṃ sahasrairbhahubhistadā dṛṣṭvā samāvṛtam||3.25.15||

Translation

तदा then, बहुभिः by many, सहस्रैः by thousands, समावृतम् surrounded by, एकम् single, दृष्ट्वा seeing, देवगन्धर्वाः gods and gandharvas, सिद्धाश्च siddhas, परमर्षयः great sages, विषेदुः became sad.

Meaning

Seeing Rama left alone surrounded by many thousands of demons, the gods, ghandarvas and siddhas became very sad.

AK-25-16Aranya Kanda 25.16

ततो रामस्सुसङ्कृद्धो मण्डलीकृतकार्मुकः। ससर्ज विशिखान्बाणाञ्छतशोऽथ सहस्रश।।3.25.16।।

tato rāmassusaṅkṛddho maṇḍalīkṛtakārmukḥ| sasarja viśikhānbāṇāñchataśo'tha sahasraśa||3.25.16||

Translation

ततः thereafter, रामः Rama, सुसङ्कृद्धः mighty angry, मण्डलीकृतकार्मुकः bending the bow, शतशः in hundreds, अथ and, सहस्रशः thousands, विशिखान् unfeathered ones, बाणान् arrows, ससर्ज released.

Meaning

Thereafter Rama, mighty angry, bent his bow and released hundreds and thousands of unfeathered arrows.

AK-25-17Aranya Kanda 25.17

दुरावारान्दुर्विषहान्कालदण्डोपमान् रणे। मुमोच लीलया रामः कङ्कपत्रानजिह्मगान्।।3.25.17।।

durāvārāndurviṣahānkāladaṇḍopamān raṇe| mumoca līlayā rāmḥ kaṅkapatrānajihmagān||3.25.17||

Translation

रामः Rama, रणे in war, दुरावारान् those difficult to stop, दुर्विषहान् unbearable ones, कालदण्डोपमान् those looking like Yama's staff, अजिह्मगान् going straight without missing the goal, कङ्कपत्रान् arrows furnished with herons' feathers, लीलया very easily, मुमोच discharged.

Meaning

As if sporting, Rama discharged the arrows attached with herons' feathers. The arrows were inescapable, unbearable like that of Yama's staff, that went straight without missing the target.

AK-25-18Aranya Kanda 25.18

ते शराश्शत्रुसैन्येषु मुक्ता रामेण लीलया। अददू रक्षसां प्राणान्पाशाः कालकृता इव।।3.25.18।।

te śarāśśatrusainyeṣu muktā rāmeṇa līlayā| adadū rakṣasāṃ prāṇānpāśāḥ kālakṛtā iva||3.25.18||

Translation

रामेण by Rama, लीलया sportively, शत्रुसैन्येषु at the army of the enemy, मुक्ताः released, ते शराः those arrows, कालकृताः made by the god of death, पाशाः nooses, इव like, रक्षसाम् of the demons, प्राणान् life, आददुः pulled out.

Meaning

The arrows like the noose of the god of death released by Rama on the enemy army easily destroyed the lives of the demons.

AK-25-19Aranya Kanda 25.19

भित्त्वा राक्षसदेहां स्तांस्ते शरा रुधिराप्लुताः। अन्तरिक्षगता रेजुर्दीप्ताग्निसमतेजसः।।3.25.19।।

bhittvā rākṣasadehāṃ stāṃste śarā rudhirāplutāḥ| antarikṣagatā rejurdīptāgnisamatejasḥ||3.25.19||

Translation

ते शराः those arrows, तान् those, राक्षसदेहान् bodies of the demons, भित्त्वा after piercing, रुधिराप्लुताः drenched in blood, अन्तरिक्षगताः gone high up into the sky, दीप्ताग्निसमतेजसः glowing red like burning fire, रेजुः sparkled.

Meaning

Rama's arrows pierced the bodies of the demons and drenched in blood, they, looking like burning fire, shone in the sky.

AK-25-20Aranya Kanda 25.20

असङ्ख्येयास्तु रामस्य सायकाश्चापमण्डलात्। विनिष्पेतुरतीवोग्रा रक्षःप्राणापहारिणः।।3.25.20।।

asaṅkhyeyāstu rāmasya sāyakāścāpamaṇḍalāt| viniṣpeturatīvogrā rakṣḥprāṇāpahāriṇḥ||3.25.20||

Translation

रामस्य Rama's, चापमण्डलात् from the bow bent into a circle, अतीव highly, उग्राः fierce, रक्षःप्राणापहारिणः which can take the lives of demons, असङ्ख्येयाः countless ones, सायकाः arrows, विनिष्पेतुः thrown out destroying.

Meaning

From Rama's bow bent into a cirle, countless fierce arrows able to take the lives of demons were released.

AK-25-21Aranya Kanda 25.21

तैर्धनूंषि ध्वजाग्राणि वर्माणि च शिरांसि च। बाहून्सहस्ताभरणानूरून्करिकरोपमान्।।3.25.21।। चिच्छेद रामस्समरे शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः।

tairdhanūṃṣi dhvajāgrāṇi varmāṇi ca śirāṃsi ca| bāhūnsahastābharaṇānūrūnkarikaropamān||3.25.21|| ciccheda rāmassamare śataśo'tha sahasraśḥ|

Translation

रामः Rama, समरे in war, तैः by them (arrows), शतशः in hundreds, अथ and, सहस्रशः in thousands, धनूंषि bows, ध्वजाग्राणि tops of flags, वर्माणि च and armour, शिरांसि च and heads, सहस्ताभरणान् along with armlets, बाहून् shoulders, करिकरोपमान् like elephants' trunks, ऊरून् thighs, चिच्छेद cut.

Meaning

In war Rama cut asunder the bows, flag tops, armour and heads of demons, their shoulders and thighs that were like the trunks of elephants, in their hundreds and thousands.

AK-25-22-23Aranya Kanda 25.22–23 (युग्मम्)

हयान्काञ्चनसन्नाहान्रथयुक्तान्ससारथीन्।।3.25.22।। गजांश्च सगजारोहान्सहयान्सादिनस्तथा। पदातीन्समरे हत्वा ह्यनयद्यमसादनम्।।3.25.23।।

hayānkāñcanasannāhānrathayuktānsasārathīn||3.25.22|| gajāṃśca sagajārohānsahayānsādinastathā| padātīnsamare hatvā hyanayadyamasādanam||3.25.23||

Translation

काञ्चनसन्नाहान् golden ornaments, रथयुक्तान् yoked to the chariots, ससारथीन् along with charioteers, हयान् horses, सगजारोहान् with elephant riders, गजांश्च and elephants, तथा likewise, सहयान् along with horses, सादिनः horse riders, पदातीन् infantry, समरे in war, हत्वा killed, यमसादनम् to the abode of lord of death, अनयत् sent.

Meaning

He killed horses with golden armours yoked to the chariots along with charioteers, elephants along with riders, the cavalry along with their horses and infantry and sent them all to the abode of death.

AK-25-24Aranya Kanda 25.24

ततो नालीकनाराचैस्तीक्ष्णाग्रैश्च विकर्णिभिः। भीममार्तस्वरं चक्रुर्भिद्यमाना निशाचराः।।3.25.24।।

tato nālīkanārācaistīkṣṇāgraiśca vikarṇibhiḥ| bhīmamārtasvarṃ cakrurbhidyamānā niśācarāḥ||3.25.24||

Translation

ततः then, नालीकनाराचैः with iron arrows, तीक्ष्णाग्रैः with sharp tops, विकर्णिभिः by shafts called vikarni, भिद्यमानाः torn into parts, निशाचराः demons, भीमम् terrible, आर्तस्वरम् pitiable cries, चक्रुः made.

Meaning

The bodies of the demons torn into pieces by the very sharp iron arrows and by the arrows called vikarni, they cried and shouted aloud in pitiable voices.

AK-25-25Aranya Kanda 25.25

तत्सैन्यं निशितैर्बाणैरर्दितं मर्मभेदिभिः। रामेण न सुखं लेभे शुष्कं वनमिवाग्निना।।3.25.25।।

tatsainyṃ niśitairbāṇairarditṃ marmabhedibhiḥ| rāmeṇa na sukhṃ lebhe śuṣkṃ vanamivāgninā||3.25.25||

Translation

रामेण by Rama, मर्मभेदिभिः by those piercing into vital parts, निशितैः by sharp ones, बाणैः by arrows, अर्दितम् tormented, तत् सैन्यम् that army, शुष्कम् dried up, वनम् forest, अग्निना इव as if by fire, सुखम् relief न लेभे did not have.

Meaning

Just like the dried up forest burnt by the fire, the army was totally destroyed by Rama's arrows that pierced into the vital parts of the soldiers.

AK-25-26Aranya Kanda 25.26

केचिद्भीमबलाश्शूराश्शूलान्खङ्गान्परश्वधान्। रामस्याभिमुखं गत्वा चिक्षिपुः परमायुधान्।।3.25.26।।

kecidbhīmabalāśśūrāśśūlānkhaṅgānparaśvadhān| rāmasyābhimukhṃ gatvā cikṣipuḥ paramāyudhān||3.25.26||

Translation

भीमबलाः men of fierce strength, केचित् a few, शूराः warriors, रामस्य Rama's, अभिमुखम् going towards, गत्वा went, परमायुधान् very powerful weapons, शूलान् spikes, खङ्गान् swords, परश्वधान् axes, चिक्षिपुः threw.

Meaning

A few warriors of fierce strength approached Rama and hurled at him very powerful weapons, spears, swords and axes.

AK-25-27Aranya Kanda 25.27

तानि बाणैर्महाबाहुश्शस्त्राण्यावार्य राघवः। जहार समरे प्राणांश्चिच्छेद च शिरोधरान्।।3.25.27।।

tāni bāṇairmahābāhuśśastrāṇyāvārya rāghavḥ| jahāra samare prāṇāṃściccheda ca śirodharān||3.25.27||

Translation

महाबाहुः strongarmed, राघवः Rama, समरे in war, बाणैः with arrows, तेषाम् their, शस्त्राणि weapons, आवार्य attacked, प्राणान् life, जहार took, शिरोधरान् heads, चिच्छेद cut off.

Meaning

Strongarmed Rama attacked them with his arrows and cut off their heads and took their lives.

AK-25-28Aranya Kanda 25.28

ते छिन्नशिरसः पेतुश्चिन्नवर्मशरासनाः। सुपर्णवातविक्षिप्ता जगत्यां पादपा यथा।।3.25.28।।

te chinnaśirasḥ petuścinnavarmaśarāsanāḥ| suparṇavātavikṣiptā jagatyāṃ pādapā yathā||3.25.28||

Translation

ते they, छिन्नशिरसः broken heads, छिन्नवर्मशरासनाः broken armour and bows, सुपर्णवातविक्षिप्ताः broken tree tops fallen down by the wind of eagle's wing (blow of the the great eagle Garuda), पादपाः trees, यथा just as, जगत्याम् on the land, पेतुः fell.

Meaning

The heads, armour and bows fell down broken on the ground like trees in the wind gererated by Garuda's wings.

AK-25-29Aranya Kanda 25.29

अवशिष्टाश्च ये तत्र विषण्णाश्च निशाचराः। खरमेवाभ्यधावन्त शरणार्थं शरार्दिताः।।3.25.29।।

avaśiṣṭāśca ye tatra viṣaṇṇāśca niśācarāḥ| kharamevābhyadhāvanta śaraṇārthṃ śarārditāḥ||3.25.29||

Translation

तत्र there, अवशिष्टाः remaining ones, ये those, निशाचराः demons, शरार्दिताः hit by arrows, विषण्णाश्च desperate, खरमेव to Khara only, शरणार्थम् for refuge, अभ्यधावन्त ran towards.

Meaning

The rest of the demons hit by the arrows ran desperate towards Khara for refuge.

AK-25-30Aranya Kanda 25.30

तान्सर्वान्पुनरादाय समाश्वास्य च दूषणः। अभ्यधावत काकुत्स्थं क्रुद्धो रुद्रमिवान्तकः।।3.25.30।।

tānsarvānpunarādāya samāśvāsya ca dūṣaṇḥ| abhyadhāvata kākutsthṃ kruddho rudramivāntakḥ||3.25.30||

Translation

दूषणः Dusana, तान् स them, सर्वान् all, समाश्वास्य pacifying, पुनः again, आदाय bringing them together, क्रुद्धः wrathful, अन्तकः yama, रुद्रमिव like Rudra, काकुत्स्थं on Rama, अभ्यधावत ran towards.

Meaning

Pacifying them all, Dusana regathered them again and ran towards Rama like an angry Yama rushing towards Rudra.

AK-25-31Aranya Kanda 25.31

निवृत्तास्तु पुनस्सर्वे दूषणाश्रयनिर्भयाः। राममेवाभ्यधावन्त सालतालशिलायुधाः।।3.25.31।।

nivṛttāstu punassarve dūṣaṇāśrayanirbhayāḥ| rāmamevābhyadhāvanta sālatālaśilāyudhāḥ||3.25.31||

Translation

सर्वे all, दूषणाश्रयनिर्भयाः were free from fear due to Dusana's protection, पुनः again, निवृत्ताः returned, सालतालशिलायुधाः carrying sal, palm and stones as weapons, राममेव to Rama, अभ्यधावन्त advanced towards.

Meaning

Under Dusana's protection, all of them felt relieved from fear and, carrying sal and palm trees and stones as weapons, advanced towards Rama again.

AK-25-32Aranya Kanda 25.32

शूलमुद्गरहस्ताश्च चापहस्ता महाबलाः। सृजन्तश्शरवर्षाणि शस्त्रवर्षाणि संयुगे।।3.25.32।। द्रुमवर्षाणि मुञ्चन्तश्शिलावर्षाणि राक्षसाः।।

śūlamudgarahastāśca cāpahastā mahābalāḥ| sṛjantaśśaravarṣāṇi śastravarṣāṇi sṃyuge||3.25.32|| drumavarṣāṇi muñcantaśśilāvarṣāṇi rākṣasāḥ||

Translation

शूलमुद्गरहस्ताश्च spears and hammers in their hands, चापहस्ताः bows in hands, महाबलाः extremely strong, राक्षसाः demons, संयुगे in war, शरवर्षाणि rain of arrows, शस्त्रवर्षाणि rain of weapons, सृजन्तः poured, द्रुमवर्षाणि rain of trees, शिलावर्षाणि rain of stones, मुञ्चन्तः continuously released.

Meaning

Holding spears, hammers and bows in their hands, the mighty demons rained on Rama weapons like arrows, trees and stones.

AK-25-33Aranya Kanda 25.33

तद्बभूवाद्भुतं युद्धं तुमुलं रोमहर्षणम्। रामस्य च महाघोरं पुनस्तेषां च रक्षसाम्।।3.25.33।।

tadbabhūvādbhutṃ yuddhṃ tumulṃ romaharṣaṇam| rāmasya ca mahāghorṃ punasteṣāṃ ca rakṣasām||3.25.33||

Translation

पुनः again, रामस्य Rama's, तेषां रक्षसां च of those demons, तुमुलम् fierce, अद्भुतम् wonderful, रोमहर्षणम् horripilating, महाघोरम् very dreadful, तत् युद्धम् that war, बभूव became.

Meaning

The thrilling, fierce, horrifying and horripilating battle again ensued betwen Rama and the demons.

AK-25-34-36Aranya Kanda 25.34–36 (त्रिकम्)

ते समन्तादतिक्रुद्धा राघवं पुनरभ्ययुः।।3.25.34।। तैश्च सर्वा दिशो दृष्ट्वा प्रदिशश्च समावृताः। राक्षसैरुद्यतप्रासैश्शरवर्षाभिवर्षिभिः।।3.25.35।। स कृत्वा भैरवं नादमस्त्रं परमभास्वरम्। संयोजयत गान्धर्वं राक्षसेषु महाबलः।।3.25.36।।

te samantādatikruddhā rāghavṃ punarabhyayuḥ||3.25.34|| taiśca sarvā diśo dṛṣṭvā pradiśaśca samāvṛtāḥ| rākṣasairudyataprāsaiśśaravarṣābhivarṣibhiḥ||3.25.35|| sa kṛtvā bhairavṃ nādamastrṃ paramabhāsvaram| sṃyojayata gāndharvṃ rākṣaseṣu mahābalḥ||3.25.36||

Translation

ते they, अतिक्रुद्धाः mighty angry, पुनः again, राघवम् at Rama, समन्तात् from all directions, अभ्ययुः advanced towards, महाबलः mighty, सः he, उद्यतप्रासैः by raised missiles, शरवर्षिभिः raining arrows, तैः by them, सर्वाः all, दिशः quarters, प्रदिशश्च also intermediate directions, समावृताः were covered, दृष्ट्वा seeing, भैरवम् frightening, नादम् sound, कृत्वा produced, राक्षसेषु at the demons, परमभास्वरम् very dazzling, गान्धर्वम् belonging to gandharva, अस्त्रम् weapon, संयोजयत aimed at.

Meaning

As the infuriated demons again hurtled towards Rama, filling the quarters and the intermediate directions and raining missiles, Rama aimed at them dazzling gandharvastras, producing a frightening warcry.

AK-25-37Aranya Kanda 25.37

ततश्शरसहस्राणि निर्ययुश्चापमण्डलात्। सर्वा दश दिशो बाणैरावार्यन्त समागतैः।।3.25.37।।

tataśśarasahasrāṇi niryayuścāpamaṇḍalāt| sarvā daśa diśo bāṇairāvāryanta samāgataiḥ||3.25.37||

Translation

ततः then, चापमण्डलात् from the the bow bent round, शरसहस्राणि thousands of arrows, निर्ययुः let out, समागतैः by approaching, बाणैः by arrows, सर्वाः all, दश ten, दिशः quarters, अवार्यन्त were filled.

Meaning

Rama then let out from his bow, stretched round, thousands of arrows that covered all the ten quarters.

AK-25-38Aranya Kanda 25.38

नाददानं शरान्घोरान्नमुञ्चन्तं शिलीमुखान्। विकर्षमाणं पश्यन्ति राक्षसास्ते शरार्दिताः।।3.25.38।।

nādadānṃ śarānghorānnamuñcantṃ śilīmukhān| vikarṣamāṇṃ paśyanti rākṣasāste śarārditāḥ||3.25.38||

Translation

शरार्दिताः hurt by the arrows, ते राक्षसाः the demons, घोरान् terrible, शरान् arrows, आददानम् taking out, न पश्यन्ति could not see, शिलीमुखान् arrows, मुञ्चन्तम् sending forth, न not, विकर्षमाणम् shooting arrow.

Meaning

The demons, though wounded, could not see whereform the terrible arrows came. They only saw Rama shooting the arrows.

AK-25-39Aranya Kanda 25.39

शरान्धकारमाकाशमावृणोत्सदिवाकरम्। बभूवावस्थितो रामः प्रवमन्निव ताञ्छरान्।।3.25.39।।

śarāndhakāramākāśamāvṛṇotsadivākaram| babhūvāvasthito rāmḥ pravamanniva tāñcharān||3.25.39||

Translation

शरान्धकारम् darkness created by the arrows, सदिवाकरम् along with the Sun, आकाशम् sky, आवृणोत् covered, रामः Rama, तान् those, शरान् arrows, प्रवमन्निव as if vomitting, अवस्थितः stationed, भभूव appeared.

Meaning

Through the darkness created by the arrows that covered the sky and the Sun, Rama looked as though he was vomitting them.

AK-25-40Aranya Kanda 25.40

युगपत्पतमानैश्च युगपच्च हतैर्भृशम्। युगपत्पतितैश्चैव विकीर्णा वसुधा भवत्।।3.25.40।।

yugapatpatamānaiśca yugapacca hatairbhṛśam| yugapatpatitaiścaiva vikīrṇā vasudhā bhavat||3.25.40||

Translation

वसुधा earth, युगपत् simultaneously, पतमानैश्च fallen down, हतैश्च by those slain, पतितैश्चैव by those who fell on the ground, भृशम् exceedingly, विकीर्णा scattered all over, अभवत् appeared.

Meaning

It seemed as if it all happened at the same time, the entire earth filling with demons seriously injured, slain and fallen down on the ground.

AK-25-41Aranya Kanda 25.41

निहताः पतिताः क्षीणाश्छिन्ना भिन्ना विदारिताः। तत्र तत्र स्म दृश्यन्ते राक्षसास्ते सहस्रशः।।3.25.41।।

nihatāḥ patitāḥ kṣīṇāśchinnā bhinnā vidāritāḥ| tatra tatra sma dṛśyante rākṣasāste sahasraśḥ||3.25.41||

Translation

ते राक्षसाः they, demons, निहताः killed, तत्र तत्र all over there, सहस्रशः in their thousands, पतिताः fallen, क्षीणाः thinned down, छिन्नाः cut into pieces, भिन्नाः those broken pieces, विदारिताः those pierced, दृश्यन्ते स्म were found.

Meaning

There were bodies of demons pierced and torn, thinned and fallen down, destroyed, broken and cut into pieces scattered in their thousands.

AK-25-42Aranya Kanda 25.42

सोष्णीषैरुत्तमाङ्गैश्च साङ्गदैर्बाहुभिस्तथा। ऊरुभिर्जानुभिश्छिन्नैर्नानारूपैविभूषणैः।।3.25.42।। हयैश्च द्विपमुख्यैश्च रथैर्भिन्नैरनेकशः। चामरैर्व्यजनैश्छत्रैर्ध्वजैर्नानाविधैरपि।।3.25.43।। रामस्य बाणाभिहतैर्विचित्रैश्शूलपट्टिसैः। खङ्गै खण्डीकृतैः प्रासैर्विकीर्णैश्च परश्वधैः।।3.25.44।। चूर्णिताभिश्शिलाभिश्च शरैश्चित्रैरनेकशः। विच्छिन्नैस्समरे भूमिर्विकीर्णाऽभूद्भयङ्करा।।3.25.45।।

Translation

समरे in war, सोष्णीषैः with headgears, उत्तमाङ्गैश्च heads (best part of body), तथा like that, साङ्गदैः armlets, बाहुभिः with shoulders, छिन्नैः cut to pieces, ऊरुभिः with thighs, जानुभिः with knees, नानारूपैर्विभूषणैः with different kinds of arms, अनेकशः in many ways, हयैश्च with horses, द्विपमुख्यैश्च with best of elephants, भिन्नैः by those broken, रथैः with chariots, चामरैः by fans made of yaktail, व्यजनैः by fans, छत्रैः by umbrellas, नानाविधैः of several kinds, ध्वजैः by flags, रामस्य Rama's, बाणाभिहतैः destroyed by arrows, विचित्रैः by different kinds, शूलपट्टिशैः by spears, खण्डीकृतैः by the broken ones, खङ्गैः with swords, प्रासैः by darts, विकीर्णैः by the scattered, परश्वधैः by battleaxes, चूर्णिताभिः by those crushed into small pieces, शिलाभिश्च stones, अनेकशः many, विच्छिन्नैः broken, शरैः arrows, विकीर्णा scattered, भूमिः on the ground, भयंकरा frightening, अभूत् to see.

Meaning

Slain thus by Rama's arrows, the ground was littered with (bodies of) demons with limbs dismembered, headdresses and shoulders cut off, arms, thighs and knees decked with various ornaments amputated, chariots, horses, best of elephants, fans made of the tail of chamari deer (used as an insignia of royalty), umbrellas, several flags, and weapons like spears, swords, darts, battleaxes and stones crushed into pieces and arrows splintered and scattered all over. The ground looked frightening. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे पञ्चविंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the twentyfifth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
