AK-24-1Aranya Kanda 24.1

आश्रमं प्रति याते तु खरे खरपराक्रमे। तानेवौत्पातिकान्रामस्सह भ्रात्रा ददर्श ह।।3.24.1।।

āśramṃ prati yāte tu khare kharaparākrame| tānevautpātikānrāmassaha bhrātrā dadarśa ha||3.24.1||

Translation

खरपराक्रमे endowed with malicious might, खरे when Khara, आश्रमं प्रति towards the hermitage, याते marched, रामः Rama, भ्रात्रा सह with his brother, औत्पातिकान् phenomena boding calamity, तानेव ददर्श ह he also saw.

Meaning

When Khara endowed with malicious might was marching towards the hermitage, Rama and his brother saw the same omens of impending calamity the demon had seen.

AK-24-2Aranya Kanda 24.2

तानुत्पातान्महोघोरानुत्थितान्रोमहर्षणान्। प्रजानामहितान्दृष्ट्वा रामो लक्ष्मणमब्रवीत्।।3.24.2।।

tānutpātānmahoghorānutthitānromaharṣaṇān| prajānāmahitāndṛṣṭvā rāmo lakṣmaṇamabravīt||3.24.2||

Translation

महाघोरान् most dreadful, रोमहर्षणान horripilation, प्रजानाम् to people, अहितान् harmful, तान् those, उत्पातान् calamitous, दृष्ट्वा seeing, रामः Rama, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

When Rama saw the most dreadful, horripilating phenomena foreboding calamity, he said to Lakshmana:

AK-24-3Aranya Kanda 24.3

इमान्पश्य महाबाहो सर्वभूतापहारिणः। समुत्थितान्महोत्पातान्संहर्तुं सर्वराक्षसान्।।3.24.3।।

imānpaśya mahābāho sarvabhūtāpahāriṇḥ| samutthitānmahotpātānsṃhartuṃ sarvarākṣasān||3.24.3||

Translation

महाबाहो longarmed, सर्वभूतापहारिणः alldestructive, सर्वराक्षसान् all demons, संहर्तुम् to kill, समुत्थितान् present, इमान् these, महोत्पातान् great calamitous events, पश्य see.

Meaning

O longarmed Lakshmana see these calamitous phenomena that forebode mass destruction of men and demons.

AK-24-4Aranya Kanda 24.4

अमी रुधिरधारास्तु विसृजन्तः खरस्वनाः। व्योम्नि मेघा विवर्तन्ते परुषा गर्दभारुणाः।।3.24.4।।

amī rudhiradhārāstu visṛjantḥ kharasvanāḥ| vyomni meghā vivartante paruṣā gardabhāruṇāḥ||3.24.4||

Translation

रुधिरधाराः flow of blood, विसृजन्तः showering, खरस्वनाः harsh sounds, परुषाः rough, गर्दभारुणाः brownishred like the colour of donkeys, अमी these, मेघाः clouds, व्योम्नि in the sky, विवर्तन्ते are moving about.

Meaning

These rumbling clouds, brownishred like the colour of a donkey, are moving about in the sky showering streams of blood.

AK-24-5Aranya Kanda 24.5

सधूमाश्च शरास्सर्वे मम युद्धाभिनन्दिनः। रुक्मपृष्ठानि चापानि विचेष्टन्ते च लक्ष्मण।।3.24.5।।

sadhūmāśca śarāssarve mama yuddhābhinandinḥ| rukmapṛṣṭhāni cāpāni viceṣṭante ca lakṣmaṇa||3.24.5||

Translation

युद्धाभिनन्दिनः welcome me to war, सर्वे all, मम शराः my arrows, सधूमाश्च smoking, लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, रुक्मपृष्ठानि coated with gold, चापानि च and bows, विचेष्टन्ते are trying.

Meaning

O Lakshmana all my arrows are smoking and this goldplated bow welcomes me to war.

AK-24-6Aranya Kanda 24.6

यादृशा इह कूजन्ति पक्षिणः वनचारिणः। अग्रतो नो भयं प्राप्तं संशयो जीवितस्य च।।3.24.6।।

yādṛśā iha kūjanti pakṣiṇḥ vanacāriṇḥ| agrato no bhayṃ prāptṃ sṃśayo jīvitasya ca||3.24.6||

Translation

इह here, वनचारिणः moving in the forest, पक्षिणः birds, यादृशाः in such way, कूजन्ति screeching, नः for us, अग्रतः in future, भयम् fear, प्राप्तम् is foreseen, जीवितस्य of life, संशयः च also doubtful.

Meaning

The way the forestbirds are screeching makes me foresee danger and makes survival doubtful.

AK-24-7-8Aranya Kanda 24.7–8 (युग्मम्)

सम्प्रहारस्तु सुमहान्भविष्यति न संशयः। अयमाख्याति मे बाहुस्स्फुरमाणो मुहुर्मुहुः।।3.24.7।। सन्निकर्षे तु न श्शूर जयं शत्रोः पराजयम्। सप्रभं च प्रसन्नं च तव वक्त्रं हि लक्ष्यते।।3.24.8।।

samprahārastu sumahānbhaviṣyati na sṃśayḥ| ayamākhyāti me bāhussphuramāṇo muhurmuhuḥ||3.24.7|| sannikarṣe tu na śśūra jayṃ śatroḥ parājayam| saprabhṃ ca prasannṃ ca tava vaktrṃ hi lakṣyate||3.24.8||

Translation

सुमहान् very great, सम्प्रहारस्तु destruction of life, भविष्यति will take place, संशयः doubt, न no, शूर O brave one, मुहुः मुहुः again and again, स्फुरमाणः shivering, अयम् this, मे बाहुः my (right) shoulder, सन्निकर्षे in near future, नः our, जयम् success, शत्रोः enemy's, पराजयम् defeat, आख्याति indicating, तव your, वक्त्रम् face, सप्रभं च is bright, प्रसन्नं च cheerful too, लक्ष्यते हि appears indeed.

Meaning

A mass destruction of life is going to take place. There is no doubt about it. O brave Lakshmana my right shoulder trembles again and again, indicating the defeat of the enemy. Your beaming visage presages victory.

AK-24-9Aranya Kanda 24.9

उद्यतानां हि युद्धार्थं येषां भवति लक्ष्मण। निष्प्रभं वदनं तेषां भवत्यायुः परिक्षयः।।3.24.9।।

udyatānāṃ hi yuddhārthṃ yeṣāṃ bhavati lakṣmaṇa| niṣprabhṃ vadanṃ teṣāṃ bhavatyāyuḥ parikṣayḥ||3.24.9||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, युद्धार्थम् for war, उद्यतानाम् of those making effort, येषाम् of those, वदनम् face, निष्प्रभम् pale, भवति becomes, तेषाम् their, आयुः life, परिक्षयः shortened, भवति become.

Meaning

O Lakshmana, while preparing for war, those whose faces look pale are, for sure, going to die.

AK-24-10Aranya Kanda 24.10

रक्षसां नर्दतां घोरश्श्रूयते च महाध्वनिः। आहतानां च भेरीणां राक्षसैः क्रूरकर्मभिः।।3.24.10।।

rakṣasāṃ nardatāṃ ghoraśśrūyate ca mahādhvaniḥ| āhatānāṃ ca bherīṇāṃ rākṣasaiḥ krūrakarmabhiḥ||3.24.10||

Translation

नर्दताम् of the roaring ones, रक्षसाम् of the demons, क्रूरकर्मभिः doing cruel deeds, राक्षसैः by the demons, आहतानाम् of the beaten (drums), भेरीणां च of kettle drums, घोरः dreadful, महाध्वनिः very loud sound, श्रूयते च is heard.

Meaning

A dreadful roar of demons and the loud sound of wardrums beaten by the wicked demons are heard.

AK-24-11Aranya Kanda 24.11

अनागतविधानं तु कर्तव्यं शुभमिच्छता। आपदं शङ्कमानेन पुरुषेण विपश्चिता।।3.24.11।।

anāgatavidhānṃ tu kartavyṃ śubhamicchatā| āpadṃ śaṅkamānena puruṣeṇa vipaścitā||3.24.11||

Translation

आपदम् danger, शङ्कमानेन by a person apprehending, शुभम् good, इच्छता by one desirous of, विपश्चिता by a learned one, पुरुषेण by a man, अनागतविधानम् defence before the onset of danger, कर्तव्यं हि should be planned.

Meaning

A wise man who apprehends danger or one who desires his own good should plan his defence even before the onset of danger.

AK-24-12Aranya Kanda 24.12

तस्माद्गृहीत्वा वैदेहीं शरपाणिर्धनुर्धरः। गुहामाश्रय शैलस्य दुर्गां पादपसङ्कुलाम्।।3.24.12।।

tasmādgṛhītvā vaidehīṃ śarapāṇirdhanurdharḥ| guhāmāśraya śailasya durgāṃ pādapasaṅkulām||3.24.12||

Translation

तस्मात् therefore, वैदेहीम् to Sita, गृहीत्वा taking, शरपाणिः with arrows in hand, धनुर्धरः wielding bow, शैलस्य mountains, दुर्गाम् inaccessible, पादपसङ्कुलाम् crowded with trees, गुहाम् cave, आश्रय take shelter.

Meaning

Therefore, take shelter along with Sita in the inaccessible mountain cave, overgrown with trees, ready with your bow and arrows.

AK-24-13Aranya Kanda 24.13

प्रतिकूलितुमिच्छामि न हि वाक्यमिदं त्वया। शापितो मम पादाभ्यां गम्यतां वत्स मा चिरम्।।3.24.13।।

pratikūlitumicchāmi na hi vākyamidṃ tvayā| śāpito mama pādābhyāṃ gamyatāṃ vatsa mā ciram||3.24.13||

Translation

इदं वाक्यम् these words, त्वया you, प्रतिकूलितुम् to oppose, न इच्छामि I do not desire, वत्स dear one, मम पादाभ्याम् my word of honour on my feet, शापितः असि you are bound, गम्यताम् go, चिरम् मा without delay.

Meaning

O dear, I do not like you to oppose this word of honour. You must touch my feet and go without delay.

AK-24-14Aranya Kanda 24.14

त्वं हि शूरश्च बलवान्हन्याह्येतान्न संशयः। स्वयं तु हन्तुमिच्छामि सर्वानेव निशाचरान्।।3.24.14।।

tvṃ hi śūraśca balavānhanyāhyetānna sṃśayḥ| svayṃ tu hantumicchāmi sarvāneva niśācarān||3.24.14||

Translation

त्वम् you, शूरश्च valiant too, बलवान् strong man, एतान् these demons, हन्याः हि you can kill them, तु सर्वानेव all of them, निशाचरान् demons, स्वयम् myself, हन्तुम् to kill, इच्छामि wish.

Meaning

You are valiant and strong. There is no doubt that you can kill all these demons. But I desire to kill them.

AK-24-15Aranya Kanda 24.15

एवमुक्तस्तु रामेण लक्ष्मणस्सह सीताया। शरानादाय चापं च गुहां दुर्गां समाश्रयत्।।3.24.15।।

evamuktastu rāmeṇa lakṣmaṇassaha sītāyā| śarānādāya cāpṃ ca guhāṃ durgāṃ samāśrayat||3.24.15||

Translation

रामेण by Rama, एवम् in that way, उक्तः was bid, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, शरान् arrows, चापं च bow too, आदाय taking, सीतया सह with Sita, दुर्गाम् inaccessible, गुहाम् cave, समाश्रयत् took shelter.

Meaning

Thus ordered by Rama, Lakshmana took the arrows and the bow and accompanied by Sita took shelter in the inaccessible cave.

AK-24-16Aranya Kanda 24.16

तस्मिन्प्रविष्टे तु गुहां लक्ष्मणे सह सीतया। हन्त निर्युक्तमित्युक्त्वा रामः कवचमाविशत्।।3.24.16।।

tasminpraviṣṭe tu guhāṃ lakṣmaṇe saha sītayā| hanta niryuktamityuktvā rāmḥ kavacamāviśat||3.24.16||

Translation

तस्मिन् when he, लक्ष्मणे Lakshmana, सीतया सह with Sita, गुहाम् into the cave, प्रविष्टे entered, रामः Rama, हन्त oh, निर्युक्तम् work is accomplished, इति this, उक्त्वा having spoken, कवचम् shield, आविशत् put on.

Meaning

With Lakshmana and Sita inside the cave, Rama heaved his shield, saying, Oh the work is accomplished.

AK-24-17Aranya Kanda 24.17

स तेनाग्नि निकाशेन कवचेन विभूषितः। बभूव राम स्तिमिरे विधूमोऽग्निरिवोत्थितः।।3.24.17।।

sa tenāgni nikāśena kavacena vibhūṣitḥ| babhūva rāma stimire vidhūmo'gnirivotthitḥ||3.24.17||

Translation

अग्निनिकाशेन blazing like fire, तेन by that, कवचेन by the shield, विभूषितः welldecorated, सः रामः that Rama, तिमिरे in darkness, उत्थितः arising, विधूमः smokeless, अग्निरिव like fire, बभूव looked.

Meaning

Adorned with the shield, Rama shone like smokeless fire rising in darkness.

AK-24-18Aranya Kanda 24.18

स चापमुद्यम्य महच्छरानादाय वीर्यवान्। बभूवावस्थितस्तत्र ज्यास्वनैः पूरयन्दिशः।।3.24.18।।

sa cāpamudyamya mahaccharānādāya vīryavān| babhūvāvasthitastatra jyāsvanaiḥ pūrayandiśḥ||3.24.18||

Translation

वीर्यवान् valiant, सः he, महत् huge, चापम् bow, उद्यम्य lifting, ज्यास्वनैः by the twangs of the bowstring, दिशः all directions, पूरयन् filling, तत्र there, अवस्थितः बभूव stayed.

Meaning

Valiant Rama lifted the huge bow and arrows and stood there, filling the directions with the twangs of his bow.

AK-24-19Aranya Kanda 24.19

ततो देवास्सगन्धर्वास्सिद्धाश्च सह चारणैः। समेयुश्च महात्मानो युद्धदर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः।।3.24.19।।

tato devāssagandharvāssiddhāśca saha cāraṇaiḥ| sameyuśca mahātmāno yuddhadarśanakāṅkṣiṇḥ||3.24.19||

Translation

ततः thereafter, सगन्धर्वाः along with the celestial muscians, देवाः gods, महात्मनः great souls, सिद्धाश्च siddhas, चारणैः with bards, सह along with, युद्धदर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः desiring to see the war, समेयुः assembled.

Meaning

Then the gods along with gandharvas, siddhas, and celestial bards assembled there, wishing to witness the war.

AK-24-20Aranya Kanda 24.20

ऋषयश्च महात्मानो लोके ब्रह्मर्षिसत्तमाः। समेत्य चोचुस्सहिता अन्योन्यं पुण्यकर्मणः।।3.24.20।।

ṛṣayaśca mahātmāno loke brahmarṣisattamāḥ| sametya cocussahitā anyonyṃ puṇyakarmaṇḥ||3.24.20||

Translation

महात्मानः highsouled, ऋषयश्च ascetics, लोके in the world, ब्रह्मर्षिसत्तमाः brahmarsis, पुण्यकर्मणः pious, समेत्य assembling, अन्योन्यम् to one another, सहिताः collectively, ऊचुः said.

Meaning

Great ascetics of the world, distinguished brahmarsis, accomplishers of pious deeds assembled and said to one another:

AK-24-21Aranya Kanda 24.21

स्वस्ति गोब्राह्मणेभ्योऽस्तु लोकानां येऽभिसङ्गताः। जयतां राघवो युद्धे पौलस्त्यान् रजनीचरान्।।3.24.21।। चक्रहस्तो यथा युद्धे सर्वानसुर पुङ्गवान्।

svasti gobrāhmaṇebhyo'stu lokānāṃ ye'bhisaṅgatāḥ| jayatāṃ rāghavo yuddhe paulastyān rajanīcarān||3.24.21|| cakrahasto yathā yuddhe sarvānasura puṅgavān|

Translation

गोब्राह्मणेभ्यः to cows and brahmins, लोकानां of all the world, (सर्वशः by all means), स्वस्ति auspicious, अस्तु let it be, (ऊचुः spoke), चक्रहस्तः Visnu, युद्धे in war, सर्वान् all, असुरपङ्गवान् powerful demons, यथा likewise, राघवः Rama, सङ्ख्ये पौलस्त्यान् all members of the Paulastya race in the battle, रजनीचरान् nightrangers (demons), जयताम् let him win.

Meaning

'Let there be wellbeing for the cows, brahmins, and all the worlds. Let Rama, the scion of the Raghu race, conquer the Paulastyas (demons) in war like lord Visnu, wielder of the disc, who defeated the most powerful demons'.

AK-24-22-23Aranya Kanda 24.22–23 (युग्मम्)

एवमुक्त्वा पुनः प्रोचुरालोक्य च परस्परम्।।3.24.22।। चतुर्दश सहस्राणि रक्षसां भीमकर्मणाम्। एकश्च रामो धर्मात्मा कथं युद्धं भविष्यति।।3.24.23।।

evamuktvā punḥ procurālokya ca parasparam||3.24.22|| caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasāṃ bhīmakarmaṇām| ekaśca rāmo dharmātmā kathṃ yuddhṃ bhaviṣyati||3.24.23||

Translation

एवम् in that way, उक्त्वा having spoken, आलोक्य च and after looking at, परस्परम् to one another, पुनः again, प्रोचुः spoke, भीमकर्मणाम् of those of terrific deeds, रक्षसाम् of demons, चतुर्दश fourteen, सहस्राणि thousands, धर्मात्मा righteous self, रामश्च Rama, एकः all alone, युद्धम् war, कथम् how, भविष्यति will it be?

Meaning

Thus looking at one another they discussed among themselves how there can be war between the righteous Rama fighting singlehanded on the one hand and the fourteen thousand demons, performers of terrific deeds, on the other.

AK-24-24Aranya Kanda 24.24

इति राजर्षयस्सिद्धास्सगणाश्च द्विजर्षभाः। जातकौतूहलास्तस्थुर्विमानस्थाश्च देवताः।।3.24.24।।

iti rājarṣayassiddhāssagaṇāśca dvijarṣabhāḥ| jātakautūhalāstasthurvimānasthāśca devatāḥ||3.24.24||

Translation

राजर्षयः rajarsis, सगणाः along with their groups, सिद्धाः siddhas, द्विजर्षभाः great brahmins, विमानस्थाः on the celestial chariots, देवताश्च gods also, इति this way, जातकौकूहलाः with curiosity born, तस्थुः waited.

Meaning

Rajarsis, siddhas, great brahmins with their clan and gods on the celestial chariots waited to see the war whetted with curiosity.

AK-24-25Aranya Kanda 24.25

आविष्टं तेजसा रामं सङ्ग्रामशिरसि स्थितम्। दृष्ट्वा सर्वाणि भूतानि भयाद्विव्यथिरे तदा।।3.24.25।।

āviṣṭṃ tejasā rāmṃ saṅgrāmaśirasi sthitam| dṛṣṭvā sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhayādvivyathire tadā||3.24.25||

Translation

तदा then, सङ्ग्रामशिरसि on the war front, स्थितम् standing, तेजसा with heroic lustre, आविष्ठम् engrossed, रामम् Rama, दृष्ट्वा seeing, सर्वाणि all, भूतानि beings, भयात् out of fear, विव्यथिरे were alarmed.

Meaning

Seeing Rama standing on the war front, engrossed and radiating heroic lustre, all beings were alarmed.

AK-24-26Aranya Kanda 24.26

रूपमप्रतिमं तस्य रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः। बभूव रूपं क्रुद्धस्य रुद्रस्येव पिनाकिनः।।3.24.26।।

rūpamapratimṃ tasya rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇḥ| babhūva rūpṃ kruddhasya rudrasyeva pinākinḥ||3.24.26||

Translation

अक्लिष्टकर्मणः of one who is unwearied in action, तस्य his, रामस्य Rama's, अप्रतिमम् incomparable, रूपम् form, क्रुद्धस्य of an angry one, पिनाकिनः wielder of Pinaka, रुद्रस्य Rudra's, रूपमिव like the form, बभूव appeared.

Meaning

Rama, who is unwearied in action and who is of an incomparable (lovely) form, looked ferocious like the wielder of Pinaka (Lord Siva).

AK-24-27Aranya Kanda 24.27

ततो गम्भीरनिर्ह्रादं घोरवर्मायुधध्वजम्। अनीकं यातुधानानां समन्तात्प्रत्यदृश्यत।।3.24.27।।

tato gambhīranirhrādṃ ghoravarmāyudhadhvajam| anīkṃ yātudhānānāṃ samantātpratyadṛśyata||3.24.27||

Translation

ततः then, गम्भीरनिर्ह्रादम् deep sound, घोरवर्मायुधध्वजम् having dreadful shields, weapons and banners, यातुधानानाम् of the demons, अनीकम् army, समन्तात् on all sides, प्रत्यदृश्यत appeared before.

Meaning

Then appeared on all sides the wellequipped army of demons raising deep sounds with dreadful shields, weapons and banners.

AK-24-28-29Aranya Kanda 24.28–29 (युग्मम्)

सिंहनादं विसृजतामन्योन्यमभिगर्जताम्। चापानि विस्फ़ारयतां जृम्भतामप्यभीक्ष्णशः।।3.24.28।। विप्रघुष्टस्वनानां च दुन्धुभींश्चापि निघ्नताम्। तेषां सुतुमुलश्शब्दः पूरयामास तद्वनम्।।3.24.29।।

siṃhanādṃ visṛjatāmanyonyamabhigarjatām| cāpāni vispha़ārayatāṃ jṛmbhatāmapyabhīkṣṇaśḥ||3.24.28|| vipraghuṣṭasvanānāṃ ca dundhubhīṃścāpi nighnatām| teṣāṃ sutumulaśśabdḥ pūrayāmāsa tadvanam||3.24.29||

Translation

सिंहनादम् roar of lion, विसृजताम् released, अन्योन्यम् at one another, अभिगर्जताम् shouting loudly, चापानि bows, विस्फ़ारयताम् stretching the bows, अभीक्ष्णशः constantly, जृम्भतामपि yawning, विप्रघुष्टस्वनानां च proclaiming loudly, दुन्धुभींश्च अपि even drums, निघ्नताम् beating, तेषाम् of them, सुतुमुलः tumultuous, शब्दः sound, तद्वनम् that forest, पूरयामास filled.

Meaning

The forest was filled with tumultuous sounds of the warriors roaring like lions, shouting at one another, stretching the bowstrings constantly, yawning, proclaiming loudly and beating the drums.

AK-24-30Aranya Kanda 24.30

तेन शब्देन वित्रस्ताश्वापदा वनचारिणः। दुद्रुवुर्यत्र निश्शब्दं पृष्ठतो न व्यलोकयन्।।3.24.30।।

tena śabdena vitrastāśvāpadā vanacāriṇḥ| dudruvuryatra niśśabdṃ pṛṣṭhato na vyalokayan||3.24.30||

Translation

तेन शब्देन by that sound, वित्रस्ताः alarmed, वनचारिणः roaming the forest, श्वापदाः animals, यत्र whereever, निश्शब्दम् silence, दुद्रुवुः ran, पृष्ठतः at the back, न व्यलोकयन् did not look back.

Meaning

The ferocious animals of the forest got frightened and ran away to silent spots without looking back.

AK-24-31Aranya Kanda 24.31

तत्त्वनीकं महाघोरं रामं समुपसर्पत। धृतनानाप्रहरणं गम्भीरं सागरोपमम्।।3.24.31।।

tattvanīkṃ mahāghorṃ rāmṃ samupasarpata| dhṛtanānāpraharaṇṃ gambhīrṃ sāgaropamam||3.24.31||

Translation

महाघोरम् extremely frightening, धृतनानाप्रहरणम् equipped with different kinds of missiles, गम्भीरम् deep, सागरोपमम् like the sea, तत् अनीकम् that army, रामम् to Rama, समुपसर्पत came near.

Meaning

The fierce army, deep like the sea, equipped with various missiles approached Rama.

AK-24-32Aranya Kanda 24.32

रामोऽपि चारयंश्चक्षुस्सर्वतो रणपण्डितः। ददर्श खरसैन्यं तद्युद्धाभिमुखमुत्थितम्।।3.24.32।।

rāmo'pi cārayṃścakṣussarvato raṇapaṇḍitḥ| dadarśa kharasainyṃ tadyuddhābhimukhamutthitam||3.24.32||

Rama, wellversed in warfare, cast his eyes on all sides to see the army of Khara that had come prepared for war.

AK-24-33Aranya Kanda 24.33

वितत्य च धनुर्भीमं तूण्याश्चोद्धृत्य सायकान्। क्रोधमाहारयत्तीव्रं वधार्थं सर्वरक्षसाम्।।3.24.33।।

vitatya ca dhanurbhīmṃ tūṇyāścoddhṛtya sāyakān| krodhamāhārayattīvrṃ vadhārthṃ sarvarakṣasām||3.24.33||

Translation

भीमम् formidable, धनुः bow, वितत्य stretched, तूण्याः from the quiver, सायकान् arrows, उद्धृत्य took out, सर्व रक्षसाम् to all the demons, वधार्थम् to kill, तीव्रम् intense, क्रोधम् anger, आहारयत् gathered.

Meaning

Rama stretched the formidable bow and lifted the arrows from his quiver to kill the demons and assumed intense anger.

AK-24-34Aranya Kanda 24.34

दुष्प्रेक्ष्यस्सोऽभवत्कृद्धो युगान्ताग्निरिव ज्वलन्। तं दृष्ट्वा तेजसाविष्टं प्राद्रवन्वनदेवताः।।3.24.34।।

duṣprekṣyasso'bhavatkṛddho yugāntāgniriva jvalan| tṃ dṛṣṭvā tejasāviṣṭṃ prādravanvanadevatāḥ||3.24.34||

Translation

क्रुद्धः angry, सः Rama, ज्वलन् while burning, युगान्ताग्निरिव like fire rising at the end of the creation, दुष्प्रेक्ष्य: difficult even to look at अभवत् became, तेजसा glow, आविष्टम् filled with, तम् him, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, वनदेवताः sylvan deities, प्राद्रवन् ran away.

Meaning

Rama stood burning in anger like the fire of the doom's day. It was difficult even to look at him. Seeing him full of glow even the sylvan deities ran away.

AK-24-35Aranya Kanda 24.35

तस्य क्रुद्धस्य रूपं तु रामस्य ददृशे तदा। दक्षस्येव क्रतुं हन्तुमुद्यतस्य पिनाकिनः।।3.24.35।।

tasya kruddhasya rūpṃ tu rāmasya dadṛśe tadā| dakṣasyeva kratuṃ hantumudyatasya pinākinḥ||3.24.35||

Translation

तदा then, क्रुद्धस्य of an angry one, तस्य his, रूपम् face, दक्षस्य Daksha's, क्रतुम् sacrifice, हन्तुम् to destroy, उद्यतस्य ready to, पिनाकिनः इव like that of Siva, ददृशे looked.

Meaning

Rama in anger looked like Lord Siva ready to destroy the sacrifice of Daksha.

AK-24-36Aranya Kanda 24.36

आविष्टं तेजसा रामं सङ्ग्रामशिरसि स्थितम्। दृष्ट्वा सर्वाणि भूतानि भयार्तानि प्रदुद्रुवुः।।3.24.36।।

āviṣṭṃ tejasā rāmṃ saṅgrāmaśirasi sthitam| dṛṣṭvā sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhayārtāni pradudruvuḥ||3.24.36||

Translation

तेजसा with splendour, आविष्टम् occupied, सङ्ग्रामशिरसि at the head of the battle, स्थितम् stood, रामम् Rama, दृष्ट्वा seeing, सर्वाणि all, भूतानि beings, भयार्तानि frightened, प्रदुद्रुवुः ran away.

Meaning

Seeing Rama flashing (in anger) and standing on the warfront all creatures ran away frightened.

AK-24-37Aranya Kanda 24.37

तत्कार्मुकैराभरणैर्ध्वजैश्च तैर्वर्मभिश्चाग्निसमानवर्णैः। बभूव सैन्यं पिशिताशनानां सूर्योदये नीलमिवाभ्रबृन्दम्।।3.24.37।।

tatkārmukairābharaṇairdhvajaiśca tairvarmabhiścāgnisamānavarṇaiḥ| babhūva sainyṃ piśitāśanānāṃ sūryodaye nīlamivābhrabṛndam||3.24.37||

Translation

पिशिताशनानाम् of the demons, तत् that, सैन्यम् army, कार्मुकैः with bows, आभरणैः with armour, ध्वजैश्च with flags, अग्निसमानवर्णैः the colour of fire, तैः by them, वर्मभिः by armours, सूर्योदये at Sunrise, नीलम् blue, अभ्रवृन्दमिव like a mass of cloud, बभूव looked.

Meaning

The army of demons equipped with blazing armour, bows and banners appeared like a mass of blue clouds at Sunrise. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे चतुर्विंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the twentyfourth sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
