AK-27-1Aranya Kanda 27.1

खरं तु रामाभिमुखं प्रयान्तं वाहिनीपतिः। राक्षसस्त्रिशिरा नाम सन्निपत्येदमब्रवीत्।।3.27.1।।

kharṃ tu rāmābhimukhṃ prayāntṃ vāhinīpatiḥ| rākṣasastriśirā nāma sannipatyedamabravīt||3.27.1||

Translation

रामाभिमुखम् approaching Rama, प्रयान्तम् marching towards, खरम् Khara, वाहिनीपतिः chief of army, त्रिशिराः Trisira, नाम by name, राक्षसः demon, सन्निपत्य going near, इदम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

As Khara advanced towards Rama, Trisira the chief of the army approached him and said these words:

AK-27-2Aranya Kanda 27.2

मां नियोजय विक्रान्त सन्निवर्तस्व साहसात्। पश्य रामं महाबाहुं संयुगे विनिपातितम्।।3.27.2।।

māṃ niyojaya vikrānta sannivartasva sāhasāt| paśya rāmṃ mahābāhuṃ sṃyuge vinipātitam||3.27.2||

Translation

विक्रान्तः valiant Khara, माम् me, नियोजय assign, साहसात् audacity, निवर्तस्व put down, संयुगे in the combat, विनिपातितम् thrown down, महाबाहुम् mightyarmed , रामम् Rama, पश्य you can see.

Meaning

O valiant one assign this work to me. Refrain from this audacity. See how I am going to put down the mightyarmed Rama in the battle.

AK-27-3Aranya Kanda 27.3

प्रतिजानामि ते सत्यमायुधं चाहमालभे। यथा रामं वधिष्यामि वधार्हं सर्वरक्षसाम्।।3.27.3।।

pratijānāmi te satyamāyudhṃ cāhamālabhe| yathā rāmṃ vadhiṣyāmi vadhārhṃ sarvarakṣasām||3.27.3||

Translation

अहम् I, ते to you, सत्यम् truth, प्रतिजानामि I promise, आयुधं च on my weapon, आलभे I am touching, यथा as, सर्वरक्षसाम् of all demons, वधार्हम् should be slain, रामम् Rama, वधिष्यामि I will kill.

Meaning

I promise you on my weapon that I will kill Rama.He who killed all demons deserves to be slain.

AK-27-4Aranya Kanda 27.4

अहं वास्य रणे मृत्युरेष वा समरे मम। विनिवृत्य रणोत्साहान्मुहूर्तं प्राश्निको भव।।3.27.4।।

ahṃ vāsya raṇe mṛtyureṣa vā samare mama| vinivṛtya raṇotsāhānmuhūrtṃ prāśniko bhava||3.27.4||

Translation

रणोत्साहात् from the enthusiasm to fight, विनिवृत्य restraining, रणे in fight, अहम् I, अस्य his, मृत्युः death, वा or, समरे in war, एषः this person, मम mine, मुहूर्तम् for a moment, प्राश्निकः a judge भव become.

Meaning

Restrain yourself for a moment from the enthusiasm to fight the war. Please act as an arbitrator and see who is killing whom.

AK-27-5Aranya Kanda 27.5

प्रहृष्टो वा हते रामे जनस्थानं प्रयास्यसि। मयि वा निहते रामं संयुगायोपयास्यसि।।3.27.5।।

prahṛṣṭo vā hate rāme janasthānṃ prayāsyasi| mayi vā nihate rāmṃ sṃyugāyopayāsyasi||3.27.5||

Translation

रामे when Rama, हते is killed, प्रहृष्टः with joy, जनस्थानम् to Janasthanam, प्रयास्यसि वा you will go or else, मयि वा when myself, निहते am killed, संयुगाय to the fight, रामम् Rama, उपयास्यसि वा you can fight.

Meaning

If Rama is killed be happy and go to Janasthana or else if I am killed you can fight.

AK-27-6Aranya Kanda 27.6

खरस्त्रिशिरसा तेन मृत्युलोभात्प्रसादितः। गच्छ युध्येत्यनुज्ञातो राघवाभिमुखो ययौ।।3.27.6।।

kharastriśirasā tena mṛtyulobhātprasāditḥ| gaccha yudhyetyanujñāto rāghavābhimukho yayau||3.27.6||

Translation

खरः Khara, तेन by him, त्रिशिरसा by Trisira, मृत्युलोभात् due to eagerness to face death, प्रसादितः persuaded, गच्छ you may go, युध्य you may fight, इति thus, अनुज्ञातः permitted, राघवाभिमुखः forward to Rama, ययौ he went.

Meaning

When Khara was prevailed upon by Trisara in that manner with a wish to face death, Khara permitted him by saying 'You may go and fight'.Accordingly he advanced towards Rama.

AK-27-7Aranya Kanda 27.7

त्रिशिराश्च रथेनैव वाजियुक्तेन भास्वता। अभ्यद्रवद्रणे रामं त्रिशृङ्ग इव पर्वतः।।3.27.7।।

triśirāśca rathenaiva vājiyuktena bhāsvatā| abhyadravadraṇe rāmṃ triśṛṅga iva parvatḥ||3.27.7||

Translation

त्रिशिराश्च Trisira also, वाजियुक्तेन horses harnessed, भास्वता shining, रथेनैव in a chariot, त्रिशृङ्गः three peaked Trishringa, पर्वतः इव mountain like, रणे in war, रामम् Rama, अभ्यद्रवत् attacked.

Meaning

Trisira who looked a mountain with three peaks also got horses harnessed to a shining chariot and to attack Rama proceeded.

AK-27-8Aranya Kanda 27.8

शरधारासमूहान्स महामेघ इवोत्सृजन्। व्यसृजत्सदृशं नादं जलार्द्रस्य तु दुन्दुभेः।।3.27.8।।

śaradhārāsamūhānsa mahāmegha ivotsṛjan| vyasṛjatsadṛśṃ nādṃ jalārdrasya tu dundubheḥ||3.27.8||

Translation

सः that Trisira, महामेघ इव like a huge cloud, शरधारासमूहान् streams of arrows, उत्सृजन् unleashing, जलार्द्रस्य drenched with water, दुन्दुभेः of the drum, सदृशम् similar, नादम् sound, व्यसृजत् released.

Meaning

Trisira unleashed a stream of arrows like a huge cloud (releasing rain). They produced sound, a drum drenched with water, creates.

AK-27-9Aranya Kanda 27.9

आगच्छन्तं त्रिशिरसं राक्षसं प्रेक्ष्य राघवः। धनुषा प्रतिजग्राह विधुन्वन्सायकान् शितान्।।3.27.9।।

āgacchantṃ triśirasṃ rākṣasṃ prekṣya rāghavḥ| dhanuṣā pratijagrāha vidhunvansāyakān śitān||3.27.9||

Translation

राघवः Rama, आगच्छन्तम् advancing towards him, राक्षसम् the demon, त्रिशिरसम् Trisira, प्रेक्षय observing, शितान् sharp, सायकान् arrow, धनुषा setting the bow, विधुन्वन् shaking, प्रतिजग्राह retaliated.

Meaning

On seeing demon Trisira advancing towards him, Rama shook sharp arrows off his bow.

AK-27-10Aranya Kanda 27.10

स सम्प्रहारस्तुमुलो रामत्रिशिरसोर्महान्। बभूवातीव बलिनोस्सिंहकुञ्जरयोरिव।।3.27.10।।

sa samprahārastumulo rāmatriśirasormahān| babhūvātīva balinossiṃhakuñjarayoriva||3.27.10||

Translation

रामत्रिशिरसोः between Rama and Trisira, तुमुलः tumultuous, महान् great, सः सम्प्रहारः that fight, अतीव very, बलिनोः strong ones, सिंहकुञ्जरयोः इव as between a lion and an elephant, बभूव took place.

Meaning

The tumultuous combat between Rama and Trisira looked like the strong fight between a lion and an elephant.

AK-27-11Aranya Kanda 27.11

ततस्त्रिशिरसा बाणैर्ललाटे ताडितस्त्रिभिः। अमर्षी कुपितोरामस्संरब्धमिदमब्रवीत्।।3.27.11।।

tatastriśirasā bāṇairlalāṭe tāḍitastribhiḥ| amarṣī kupitorāmassṃrabdhamidamabravīt||3.27.11||

Translation

ततः then, अमर्षी intolerant, रामः Rama, त्रिशिरसा by Trisira, त्रिभिः with three, बाणैः arrows, ललाटे on the forehead, ताडितः was hit, कुपितः a furious one, संरब्धम् very agitated, इदम् this way, अब्रवीत् he said.

Meaning

Then Rama hit with three arrows on the forehead by Trisira flew into a fury and said in a state of great excitement:

AK-27-12Aranya Kanda 27.12

अहो विक्रमशूरस्य राक्षसस्येदृशं बलम्। पुष्पैरिव शरैर्यस्य ललाटेऽस्मिन्परिक्षतः।।3.27.12।।

aho vikramaśūrasya rākṣasasyedṛśṃ balam| puṣpairiva śarairyasya lalāṭe'sminparikṣatḥ||3.27.12||

Translation

अहो Oh, विक्रमशूरस्य of an undaunted hero, राक्षसस्य of the demon, बलम् strength, ईदृशम् this amount, यस्य his, शरैः with arrows, पुष्पैरिव with flowers, अस्मिन् ललाटे this forehead, परिक्षतः scratched.

Meaning

Oh see the strength of this undaunted demon whose arrows fell like flowers on my forehead and only left a scratch.

AK-27-13Aranya Kanda 27.13

ममापि प्रतिगृह्णीष्व शरांश्चापगुणाच्च्युतान्। एवमुक्त्वा तु संरब्धश्शरानाशीविषोपमान्।3.27.13।। त्रिशिरोवक्षसि क्रुद्धो निजघान चतुर्दश।

mamāpi pratigṛhṇīṣva śarāṃścāpaguṇāccyutān| evamuktvā tu sṃrabdhaśśarānāśīviṣopamān|3.27.13|| triśirovakṣasi kruddho nijaghāna caturdaśa|

Translation

मम my, चापगुणातच्च्युतान् released from the string of the bow, शरानपि arrows too, प्रतिगृह्णीष्व you may receive, एवम् in that manner, उक्त्वा having said, संरब्धः agitated, क्रुद्धः angry, अशीविषोपमान् like the poison of a venomous snake, चतुर्दश fourteen, शरान् arrows, त्रिशिरोवक्षसि on the chest of Trisira, निजघान hit.

Meaning

Receive the arrows released from my bowstring. Saying so, the angry and agitated Rama discharged fourteen arrows, venomous like a snake, on the chest of Trisira .

AK-27-14Aranya Kanda 27.14

चतुर्भिस्तुरगानस्य शरैः सन्नतपर्वभिः।।3.27.14।। न्यपातयत तेजस्वी चतुरस्तस्य वाजिनः।

caturbhisturagānasya śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ||3.27.14|| nyapātayata tejasvī caturastasya vājinḥ|

Translation

तेजस्वी mighty man, सन्नतपर्वभिः with those having strong joints, चतुर्भिः with four, शरैः with arrows, तस्य his, अस्य his (Rama's), तुरगान् swift, चतुरः four, वाजिनः horses, न्यपातयत threw down.

Meaning

With four arrows having strong joints, the mighty hero (Rama) threw down his enemy's four swiftfooted horses.

AK-27-15Aranya Kanda 27.15

अष्टभिस्सायकैस्सूतं रथोपस्थान्न्यपातयत्।।3.27.15।। रामश्चिच्छेद बाणेन ध्वजं चास्य समुच्छ्रितम्।

aṣṭabhissāyakaissūtṃ rathopasthānnyapātayat||3.27.15|| rāmaściccheda bāṇena dhvajṃ cāsya samucchritam|

Translation

रामः Rama, अष्टभिः with eight, सायकैः arrows, सूतम् charioteer, रथोपस्थात् from the top of the chariot, न्यपातयत् brought down, बाणेन by one dart, अस्य his, समुच्छ्रितम् very lofty, ध्वजम् banner, चिच्छेद shattered to pieces.

Meaning

Rama brought down the charioteer with eight arrows and with one tore down the lofty banner of the chariot to shreds.

AK-27-16Aranya Kanda 27.16

ततो हतरथात्तस्मादुत्पतन्तं निशाचरम्।।3.27.16।। बिभेद रामस्तं बाणैर्हृदये सोऽभवज्जडः।

tato hatarathāttasmādutpatantṃ niśācaram||3.27.16|| bibheda rāmastṃ bāṇairhṛdaye so'bhavajjaḍḥ|

Translation

ततः then, रामः Rama, तस्मात् from that, हतरथात् from a broken chariot, उत्पतन्तम् one who was running away, तं निशाचरम् that demon, बाणैः with arrows, हृदये in the chest, बिभेद hit, सः he, जडः a numb man, अभवत् became.

Meaning

Rama then hit the demon with arrows on his chest while he was running away from the broken chariot. The demon became numb.

AK-27-17Aranya Kanda 27.17

सायकैश्चाप्रमेयात्मा सामर्षस्तस्य रक्षसः।।3.27.17।। शिरांस्यपातयद्रामो वेगवद्भिस्त्रिभिश्शितैः।

sāyakaiścāprameyātmā sāmarṣastasya rakṣasḥ||3.27.17|| śirāṃsyapātayadrāmo vegavadbhistribhiśśitaiḥ|

Translation

अप्रमेयात्मा a man of boundless strength, रामः Rama, सामर्षः an enraged one, वेगवद्भि: swift, शितैः with sharp ones, त्रिभिः three, सायकैः with arrows, तस्य रक्षसः that demon's, शिरांसि head, अपातयत् cut down.

Meaning

The mighty Rama in fury dismembered the heads of that demon with three sharp and swift arrows.

AK-27-18Aranya Kanda 27.18

स भूमौ रुधिरोद्गारी रामबाणाभिपीडितः।।3.27.18।। न्यपतत्पतितैः पूर्वं स्वशिरोभिर्निशाचरः।

sa bhūmau rudhirodgārī rāmabāṇābhipīḍitḥ||3.27.18|| nyapatatpatitaiḥ pūrvṃ svaśirobhirniśācarḥ|

Translation

रामबाणाभिपीडितः hit by the arrows of Rama, सः निशाचरः that demon, रुधिरोद्गारी vomitting blood, पूर्वम् a little while ago, पतितैः fallen down, स्वशिरोभिः with his heads, न्यपतत् fell down.

Meaning

The demon with his heads decapitated, hit by Rama's arrows a little while ago, fell down, vomitting blood.

AK-27-19Aranya Kanda 27.19

हतशेषास्ततो भग्ना राक्षसाः खरसंश्रया।।3.27.19।। द्रवन्ति स्म न तिष्ठन्ति व्याघ्रत्रस्ता मृगा इव।

hataśeṣāstato bhagnā rākṣasāḥ kharasṃśrayā||3.27.19|| dravanti sma na tiṣṭhanti vyāghratrastā mṛgā iva|

Translation

ततः then, खरसंश्रया under the protection of Khara, हतशेषाः surviving, राक्षसाः demons, भग्नाः with broken hearts, व्याघ्रतस्ताः those scared of tiger, मृगाः यथा like deer, द्रवन्ति स्म fast retreated, न तिष्ठन्ति did not stop.

Meaning

Those surviving demons who were under the protection of Khara got scared and retreated fast and fled like deer frightened by a tiger.

AK-27-20Aranya Kanda 27.20

तान्खरो द्रवतो दृष्ट्वा निवर्त्य रुषितस्स्वयम्।।3.27.20।। राममेवाभिदुद्राव राहुश्चन्द्रमसं यथा।

tānkharo dravato dṛṣṭvā nivartya ruṣitassvayam||3.27.20|| rāmamevābhidudrāva rāhuścandramasṃ yathā|

Translation

रुषितः angry, खरः Khara, द्रवतः retreating, तान् them, दृष्ट्वा on seeing, स्वयम् personally, निवर्त्य turning them back, राहुः Rahu, चन्द्रमसं यथा as towards Moon राममेव towards Rama alone, अभिदुद्राव ran after.

Meaning

Personally persuading the fleeing army to come back, the angry Khara leaped forward towards Rama just as Rahu approaches the moon. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये अरण्यकाण्डे सप्तविंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the twentyseventh sarga of Aranyakanda of the holy Ramayana the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
