विभीषणवच्श्रुत्वारावणिःक्रोधमूर्छितः । अब्रवीत्परुषंवाक्यंवेगेनाभ्युत्पपात च ।।6.88.1।।

vibhīṣaṇavacśrutvārāvaṇiḥkrodhamūrchitḥ | abravītparuṣṃvākyṃvegenābhyutpapāta ca ||6.88.1||

Translation

विभीषणवचः Vibheeshana's words, श्रुत्वा hearing, रावणिः Indrajith, क्रोधमूर्छितः deluded with fury, परुषम् harsh, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke, वेगेन swiftly, अभ्युत्पपात च advanced.

Meaning

Hearing Vibheeshana's words, Indrajith was deluded with fury, spoke harshly and advanced.

उद्यतायुधनिस्त्रिंशोरथेसुसमलङ्कृते । कालाश्वयुक्तेमहतिस्थितःकालान्तकोपमः ।।6.88.2।। महाप्रमाणमुद्यम्यविपुलंवेगवद्धृढम् । धनुर्बीमंपरामृश्यशरांश्चामित्रनाशनान् ।।6.88.3।।

udyatāyudhanistriṃśorathesusamalaṅkṛte | kālāśvayuktemahatisthitḥkālāntakopamḥ ||6.88.2|| mahāpramāṇamudyamyavipulṃvegavaddhṛḍham | dhanurbīmṃparāmṛśyaśarāṃścāmitranāśanān ||6.88.3||

Translation

उद्यतायुधनिस्त्रिंशः lifting the strong bow, सुसमलङ्कृते well decorated, कालाश्वयुक्ते yoked to black horses महति greatरथे chariot, स्थितःseated, कालान्तकोपमः like god of death, महाप्रमाणम् long, विपुलम् huge, वेगवत् endowed with great speed भीमम् terrific, धनुः bow, उद्यम्य holding अमित्रनाशनान् for the destruction of enemies, शरांश्च arrows also, परामृश्य drawing

Meaning

Lifting his long, strong huge, great terrific bow endowed with high speed and holding it drawing arrows seated in a chariot well decorated, drawn by black horses, Indrajith looked like God of Death.

तंददर्शमहेष्वासोरथस्थस्समलङ्कृतः । अलङ्कृतममित्रघ्नोराघवस्यानुजंबली ।।6.88.4।।

tṃdadarśamaheṣvāsorathasthassamalaṅkṛtḥ | alaṅkṛtamamitraghnorāghavasyānujṃbalī ||6.88.4||

Translation

महेष्वासः wielder of bow, रथे chariot, समलङ्कृतः decorated well, अमित्रघ्नः one who is capable of destroying enemies, बली strong, अलङ्कृतम् decorated, तम् him, राघवस्य Raghava's, अनुजम् brother, ददर्श saw

Meaning

Wielding a bow, seated in a well decorated chariot, mighty destroyer of enemies (Indrajith) saw Raghava's brother.

हनुमत्पृष्ठरूढमुदस्थरविप्रभम् । उवाचैनंसमारब्ध: सौमित्रिंसविभीषणम् ।।6.88.5।। तांश्चवानरशार्दूलान् पश्यध्वंमेपराक्रमम् ।

hanumatpṛṣṭharūḍhamudastharaviprabham | uvācainṃsamārabdha: saumitriṃsavibhīṣaṇam ||6.88.5|| tāṃścavānaraśārdūlān paśyadhvṃmeparākramam |

Translation

हनुमत्पृष्ठम् on the back of Hanuman, आरूढम् mounted, उदयस्थरविप्रभम् like the sun on eastern mountain, सविभीषणम् that Vibheeshana, एनंसौमित्रिम् Saumithri, तान् his, वानरशार्दूलान् च tiger among Vanaras, समारब्धः mounted, उवाच spoke, मे my, पराक्रमम् valour, पश्यध्वम् saw

Meaning

Lakshmana was like the Sun on the eastern mountain mounted on the back of Hanuman, the tiger among Vanaras. He saw Vibheeshana and spoke.

YK-88-6Yuddha Kanda 88.6

अद्यमत्कार्मुकोत्सृष्टंशरवर्षंदुरासदम् ।।6.88.6।। मुक्तंवर्षमिवाकाशेवारयिष्यथसंयुगे ।

adyamatkārmukotsṛṣṭṃśaravarṣṃdurāsadam ||6.88.6|| muktṃvarṣamivākāśevārayiṣyathasṃyuge |

Translation

अद्य and then, संयुगे in war, मत्कार्मुकोत्सृष्टम् see my valour and prowess, दुरासदम् difficult counter, आकाशे sky, मुक्तम् released, वर्षम् इव like rain, शरवर्षम् shower of arrows, वारयिष्यथ will not able to stop.

Meaning

"See my valour and prowess now. I will release shower of arrows from the sky like rain and it will be difficult for others to counter."

अद्यवोमामकाबाणामहाकार्मुनिस्सृताः ।।6.88.7।। विधमिष्यन्तिगात्राणितूलराशिमिवानलः ।

adyavomāmakābāṇāmahākārmunissṛtāḥ ||6.88.7|| vidhamiṣyantigātrāṇitūlarāśimivānalḥ |

Translation

अद्य and then, महाकार्मुलनिःसृताः having been delivered from the great bow, मामकाः mine, बाणाः arrows, वः your, गात्राणि limbs, अनलः fire, तूलराशिमिव like bundle of cotton, विधमिष्यन्ति will pierce

Meaning

"Then my arrows delivered from the great bow will pierce the limbs and burn like a bundle of cotton by fire."

तीक्षणसायकनिर्भन्नान्शूलशक्त्यृष्टितोमरैः ।।6.88.8।। अद्यवोगमयिष्यामिसर्वानेनयमक्षयम् ।

Translation

अद्य and now, तीक्षणसायकनिर्भिन्नान् with sharp arrows, tridents, शूलशक्त्यृष्टितोमरैःशूल pikes, spears, lances, वः, सर्वानेव all, यमक्षयम् to the abode of Yama, गमयिष्यामि will send

"Now I will send you to the abode of Yama with sharp arrows, tridents, pikes, spears and lances."

क्षिपतश्शरवर्षाणिक्षिप्रहस्तस्यसम्युगे ।।6.88.9।। जीमूतस्येननदतःकःस्थास्यतिममाग्रतः ।

kṣipataśśaravarṣāṇikṣiprahastasyasamyuge ||6.88.9|| jīmūtasyenanadatḥkḥsthāsyatimamāgratḥ |

Translation

क्षिप्रहस्तस्य swift hand, सम्युगे in battle, शरवर्षाणि rain of arrows, क्षिपत: release, जीमूतस्येव like rain cloud, नदतः roar, मम my, अग्रतः front, कः who स्थास्यति can stand ?

Meaning

"Who can stand in front of me if I release rain of arrows with my swift hand in the battle roaring like a rain cloud?"

रात्रियुद्धेमयापूर्वंवज्राशनिसमैःशरैः ।।6.88.10।। शायितौस्थोमयाभूमौविसंज्ञौसपुरस्सरौ ।

rātriyuddhemayāpūrvṃvajrāśanisamaiḥśaraiḥ ||6.88.10|| śāyitausthomayābhūmauvisṃjñausapurassarau |

Translation

पूर्वम् earlier, मया by me, रात्रियुद्धे in night war, सपुरस्सरौ you and your accomplice, वज्राशनिसमैःresembling thunderbolt, शरैः arrows, विसंज्ञौ released, भूमौ earth, शायितौ lay unconscious, स्थः laid low

"Earlier in the war at night, by the thunderbolt like arrows released by me on the Earth, you and your accomplice were made unconscious and laid low."

स्मृतिर्नतेऽस्तिवामन्येव्यक्तंवायमसादनम् ।।6.88.11।। आशीविषमिवक्रुद्धंयन्मांयोद्धुव्यवत्थित: ।

Translation

ते you, स्मृतिः lost memory, नास्ति वा is it lost, आशीविषमिव like poisonous serpent, क्रुद्धम् enraged, माम् I am, योद्धुम् to fight, यत् that way, व्यवत्थितः stood here, व्यक्तम् said, यमक्षयम् Yama's abode, वा or else, मन्ये I think

Meaning

"I am like a poisonous serpent, enraged. Is it that you have lost memory, or you stood here on the way to Yama's abode, I think."

तच्छ्रुत्वाराक्षसेन्द्रस्यगर्जितंलक्ष्मणस्तदा ।।6.88.12।। अभीतवदनःक्रुद्धोरावणिंवाक्यमब्रवीत् ।

tacchrutvārākṣasendrasyagarjitṃlakṣmaṇastadā ||6.88.12|| abhītavadanḥkruddhorāvaṇiṃvākyamabravīt |

Translation

तदा then, लक्ष्मण: Lakshmana, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य Indrajith's words, तत् that, गर्जितम् roaring, श्रुत्वा hearing, अभीतवदनः fearless countenance, क्रुद्धः angry, रावणिम् Indrajith, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoken

Meaning

On hearing Indrajith's words, Lakshmana spoke these words in anger with fearless countenance.

YK-88-13Yuddha Kanda 88.13

उक्तश्चदुर्गमःपारःकार्याणांराक्षसत्वया ।।6.88.13।। कार्याणांकर्मणांपारंयोगच्छति स बुद्धिमान् ।

uktaścadurgamḥpārḥkāryāṇāṃrākṣasatvayā ||6.88.13|| kāryāṇāṃkarmaṇāṃpārṃyogacchati sa buddhimān |

Translation

राक्षस Rakshasa, त्यया your, कार्याणाम् undertakings, दुर्गमः difficult, पारः proclaimed, उक्तश्च have spoken, यः that which, कार्याणा undertakings, कर्मणाम् tasks, पारम् to the abode of Yama, गच्छति will go, सः he who is, बुद्धिमान् intelligent one

Meaning

"Rakshasa! You have proclaimed that you will send me to Yama's abode and about the success in your undertakings even though it is not possible. He who is intelligent will succeed in his tasks (not in words alone).

YK-88-14Yuddha Kanda 88.14

सत्वमर्थस्यहीनार्थोदुरवासस्यकेनचित् ।।6.88.14।। वाचाव्याहृत्यजानीषेकृतार्थोऽस्मीतिदुर्मते ।

satvamarthasyahīnārthoduravāsasyakenacit ||6.88.14|| vācāvyāhṛtyajānīṣekṛtārtho'smītidurmate |

Translation

दुर्मते evil minded, हीनार्थः meaningless, सःत्वम् you are, केनचित् for any one, दुरवापस्य difficult to do, अर्धस्य capacity to do, वाचा by words, व्याहृत्य talking, कृतार्थः succeeded, अस्मि I am, इति thus, जानीषे thinking

Meaning

"O evil minded one! Your claim, in words that you have the capacity to do which is difficult for others is meaningless. Though you lack the capacity to succeed you are only thinking that you have succeeded."

YK-88-15Yuddha Kanda 88.15

अन्तर्धानगतेनाजौयस्त्वयाचरितस्तदा ।।6.88.15।। तस्कराचरितोमार्गःनैषवीरनिषेवितः ।

antardhānagatenājauyastvayācaritastadā ||6.88.15|| taskarācaritomārgḥnaiṣavīraniṣevitḥ |

Translation

तदा then, आजौ in the battle, अन्तर्धानगतेन remaining invisible, त्वया by you, यः that which, चरितः moving, मार्गः path, तस्कराचरितः is a cheat's move, एषः in that way, वीरनिषेवितः not chosen by warriors, न not

"Remaining invisible and moving in the battle then is the path of a thief which is not chosen by warriors."

यथाबाणपथंप्राप्यस्थितोऽहंतवराक्षस ।।6.88.16।। दर्शयस्वाद्यतत्तेजोवाचात्वंकिंविकत्थसे ।

yathābāṇapathṃprāpyasthito'hṃtavarākṣasa ||6.88.16|| darśayasvādyatattejovācātvṃkiṃvikatthase |

Translation

राक्षस Rakshasa, तव your, बाणपथम् range of arrows, प्राप्य reaching, यथा there, स्थितः stood अस्मि me, तत् that, तेजः power, अद्य now, दर्शयस्व show, त्वम् you, वाचा spoke, किम् why, विकत्थसे boasting

Meaning

"Rakshasa! I have reached your range of arrows and stand before you. Show that power now about which you boasted."

एवमुक्तोधनुर्भीमंपरामृश्यमहाबलः ।।6.88.17।। ससर्जनिशितान्बाणानिंद्रजित्समितिञ्जयः ।

evamuktodhanurbhīmṃparāmṛśyamahābalḥ ||6.88.17|| sasarjaniśitānbāṇāniṃdrajitsamitiñjayḥ |

Translation

एवम् in that way, उक्तः having spoken, महाबलः endowed with mighty prowess, समितिञ्जयः victorious, इन्द्रजित् Indrajith, भीमम् terrific, धनुः bow, परामृश्य seizing, निशितान् pointed, शरान् arrows, ससर्ज released

Meaning

After Lakshmana had spoken that way, Indrajith, endowed with mighty prowess, and victorious in combat seized a terrific bow and released pointed arrows.

तेनिसृष्टामहावेगाःशराःसर्पविषोपमाः ।।6.88.18।। सम्प्राप्यलक्ष्मणंपेतुःश्वसन्तइवपन्नगाः ।

tenisṛṣṭāmahāvegāḥśarāḥsarpaviṣopamāḥ ||6.88.18|| samprāpyalakṣmaṇṃpetuḥśvasantaivapannagāḥ |

Translation

ते न, निसृष्टाः, महावेगाः great speed, सर्पविषोपमाः deadly like serpent, शराः shafts, लक्ष्मणम् at Lakshmana, सम्प्राप्य reached, शसन्तःhissing, पन्नगाःइव like serpents, पेतुःfell

Meaning

The shafts like deadly poisonous serpents reached Lakshmana at great speed hissing and fell on Lakshmana.

रैरतिमहावेगैर्वेगवान्रावणात्मजः ।।6.88.19।। सौमित्रिमिन्द्रजिद्युद्धेविव्याधशुभलक्षणम् ।

With shafts pierced all over, glorious Lakshmana was bathed in blood and shone like smokeless fire.

इन्द्रजित्त्वात्मनःकर्मप्रसमीक्ष्याधिगम्य च ।।6.88.21।। विनद्यसुमहानादमिदंवचनमब्रवीत् ।

पत्रिणःशितधारास्तेकरामत्कार्मुकच्युताः ।।6.88.22।। आदास्यन्तेऽद्यसौमित्रेजीवितंजीवितान्तकाः ।

सौमित्रे Saumithri, पत्रिणः with feathers, शितधाराः sharp pointed arrows, मत्कार्मुकच्युताः released by me, जीवितान्तकराः which can destroy life, शराः arrows, अद्य now, तेजीवितम् your life, आद्यास्यस्ते putting down

Meaning

"Saumithri, these sharp pointed arrows fixed to feathers, which can destroy life, released by me now will put an end to your life."

अद्यगोमायुसङ्घाश्चश्येनसङ्घाश्चलक्ष्मण ।।6.88.23।। गृध्राश्चनिपतन्तुत्वांगतासुंनिहतंमया ।

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, अद्य today, मया by me, निहतम् struck down, गतासुम् ceased of life, त्वाम् you, गोमायुसङ्घाश्च jackals descend, श्येनसङ्घाश्च hawks descend, गृध्राश्च and vultures, निपतन्तु fallen dead

क्षत्रबन्धुंसदानार्यंरामःपरमदुर्मतिः ।।6.88.24।। भक्तम्भ्रातरमद्यैवत्वांद्रक्ष्यतिहतंमया ।

परमदुर्मतिः highly stupid, रामः Rama, क्षत्रबन्धुम् Kshatriya, सदा ever, अनार्यम् ignoble, भक्तम् devotee, भ्रातरम् brother, अद्यैव so also, निहतम् killed, त्वाम् you, द्रक्ष्यति will see

"Highly stupid Rama will see you, a devoted brother, a true kshatriya ever ignoble, killed by me today."

विशस्तकवचंभूमौव्यपविद्धशराससनम् ।।6.88.25।। हृतोत्तमाङ्गंसौमित्रत्वामद्यनिहतंमया ।

इतिब्रुवाणंसङ्कृद्ध: परुषंरावणात्मजम् ।।6.88.26।। हेतुमद्वाक्यमत्यर्थंलक्ष्मणःप्रत्युवाच ह ।

itibruvāṇṃsaṅkṛddha: paruṣṃrāvaṇātmajam ||6.88.26|| hetumadvākyamatyarthṃlakṣmaṇḥpratyuvāca ha |

इति thus, परुषम् harsh, ब्रुवाणम् spoken, सङ्कृद्ध: enraged, रावणात्मजम् Ravana's son, अत्यर्थं meaningful, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, हेतुमत् with reason, वाक्यम् words, प्रत्युवाच ह replied

वाग्बलंत्यजदुर्बुद्धेक्रूरकर्मासिराक्षस ।।6.88.27।। अथकस्माद्वदस्येतत्सम्पादयसुकर्मणा ।

vāgbalṃtyajadurbuddhekrūrakarmāsirākṣasa ||6.88.27|| athakasmādvadasyetatsampādayasukarmaṇā |

दुर्बुद्धेevil minded, राक्षस Rakshasa, वाग्बलम् power of speech, त्यज give up, क्रूरकर्मा cruel action, अथ now, एतत् all this, तस्मात् What use by that, वदसि talk, सुकर्मणा good deeds, सम्पादय do good action

Meaning

"Evil minded Rakshasa! Give up that wasteful power of speech. You are cruel in action. What is the use of all this now? Show by good deeds and not by talk."

कृत्वाकत्थसेकर्मकिमर्थमिहराक्षस ।।6.88.28।। कुरुतत्कर्मयेनाहंश्रद्धध्यांतवकत्थनम् ।

kṛtvākatthasekarmakimarthamiharākṣasa ||6.88.28|| kurutatkarmayenāhṃśraddhadhyāṃtavakatthanam |

Rakshasa! What is the use of praising without performing action? Show by action and create trust that you can perform.

अनुक्त्वापरुषंवाक्यंकिञ्चिदप्यनवक्षिपन् ।।6.88.29।। अविकत्थन्वधिष्यामित्वांपश्यपुरुषाधम ।

पुरुषाधम lowly person, परुषम् harsh, वाक्यम् words, किञ्चिदपि indeed, अनुक्त्वा without commenting, अनवक्षिपन् without interrupting, अविकत्थन् without boasting, त्वाम् you, वधिष्यामि will assail you, पश्य see

"Lowly Rakshasa! without any harsh words, indeed without boasting, commenting, interrupting I will assail you. You may see."

इत्युक्त्वापञ्चनाराचानाकर्णापूरितान् शितान् ।।6.88.30।। निजघानमहावेगाल्लक्ष्मणोराक्षसोरसि ।

ज्वलिताः glowing, पन्नगाःइव like serpents, सुपत्रवाजिताः tied to good feathers, बाणाः arrows, नैरृतोरसि on the chest of Rakshasa, सवितुः sun, रश्मयःयथा like the rays, अभासन्त glowed

तेन by that, शरैः arrows, आहतः struck, सः he, रावणात्मजः Indrajith, सरोषः furiously, सुप्रयुक्तै: well aimed, त्रिभिः three, बाणैः arrows, लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, प्रतिविव्याध in return

Struck by the arrows, Indrajith in return furiously released three well aimed arrows at Lakshmana.

सःबभूवमहाभीमोनरराक्षससिंहयोः ।।6.88.33।। विमर्दस्तुमुलोयुद्धेपरस्परजयैषिणोः ।

sḥbabhūvamahābhīmonararākṣasasiṃhayoḥ ||6.88.33|| vimardastumuloyuddheparasparajayaiṣiṇoḥ |

Translation

युद्धे in combat, परस्परजयैषिणोः to win in fight over each other, नरराक्षससिंहयोः Lakshmana and Indrajith, महाभीमः very frightening, सः he, विमर्द: pounding each other, तुमलः very, बभूव appeared

Meaning

In that combat both Lakshmana and Indrajith pounding to win against each other was frightening.

In the combat both the heroes fought displaying their might, shone like two planets in the heaven and fought like Indra and Vrta and were difficult to overcome.

Translation

तदा then, अवस्थितौ stayed resting, महात्मानौ great souls, बहून् many, मार्गणौघान् seeking and looking out, अवसृजन्तौ dropping and falling, केसरिणाविव like lions, युयुधाते fought, तौ they, नरराक्षससिम्हो lions among humans and Rakshasas, प्रहृष्टौ joyful, अभ्ययुध्यताम् one over the other

Meaning

Then both the great warriors Lakshmana and Indrajith fought discharging many arrows, like lions among humans and Rakshasas respectively, looking out and seeking, dropping, and falling one over the other and stayed joyful. ।। इत्यार्षेवामलीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेअष्टाऽशीतितमस्सर्गः ।। This is the end of the eighty eighth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
