YK-87-1Yuddha Kanda 87.1

एवमुक्त्वातुसौमित्रिंजातहर्षोविभीषणः । धनुष्पाणिंनमादायत्वरमाणोजगामसः ।।6.87.1।।

evamuktvātusaumitriṃjātaharṣovibhīṣaṇḥ | dhanuṣpāṇiṃnamādāyatvaramāṇojagāmasḥ ||6.87.1||

Translation

सः he, विभीषणःVibheeshana, सौमित्रिम् Saumithri, एवम् in that manner, उक्त्वा having spoken, जातहर्षः satisfied, धनुष्पाणिम् wielding bow, न him, आदाय taking, त्वरमाणःquickly, जगाम went

Meaning

Vibheeshana, having spoken that way, Saumithri was satisfied. Wielding a bow Saumithri went quickly with Vibheeshana.

YK-87-2Yuddha Kanda 87.2

अविदूरंततोगत्वाप्रविश्यतुमहद्वनम् । दर्शमामासतत्कर्मलक्ष्मणातविभीषणः ।।6.87.2।।

avidūrṃtatogatvāpraviśyatumahadvanam | darśamāmāsatatkarmalakṣmaṇātavibhīṣaṇḥ ||6.87.2||

Translation

विभीषणःVibheeshana, ततः thereafter, अविदूरम् little distance, गत्वा went, महत् great, वनम् forest, प्रविश्य entered, लक्ष्मणाय with Lakshmana, तत् then, कर्म What to do, दर्शयामास showed

Meaning

Thereafter Vibheeshana followed Lakshmana for a small distance to the forest and showed him What to do.

YK-87-3Yuddha Kanda 87.3

नीलजीमूतसङ्काशंन्यग्रोधंभीमदर्शनम् । तेजस्वीरावणभ्रातालक्ष्मणायन्यवेदयत् ।।6.87.3।।

nīlajīmūtasaṅkāśṃnyagrodhṃbhīmadarśanam | tejasvīrāvaṇabhrātālakṣmaṇāyanyavedayat ||6.87.3||

Translation

तेजस्वी brilliant, रावणभ्राता Ravana's brother, लक्ष्मणाय to Lakshmana, नीलजीमूतसङ्काशम् resembling dark clouds, भीमदर्शनम् frightening to look, न्यग्रोधम् a banyan tree, लक्ष्मणायन्यवेदयत् showed to Lakshmana

Meaning

Vibheeshana, the brilliant brother of Ravana, showed Lakshmana a banyan tree resembling a dark cloud, frightening to look at.

YK-87-4Yuddha Kanda 87.4

इहोपहारंभूतानांबलवान्रावणात्मजः । उपहृत्यततःपश्चात्सङ्ग्राममभिवर्तते ।।6.87.4।।

ihopahārṃbhūtānāṃbalavānrāvaṇātmajḥ | upahṛtyatatḥpaścātsaṅgrāmamabhivartate ||6.87.4||

Translation

बलवान् mighty, रावणात्मजः Ravana's son, इह here, भूतानाम् for all beings, उपहारम् oblations, उपहृत्य having offered, पश्चात् after that, सङ्ग्रामम् to battlefield, अभिवर्तते comes

Meaning

"Mighty son of Ravana having offered oblations for all beings he comes to the battlefield. (Said Vibheeshana)"

YK-87-5Yuddha Kanda 87.5

अदृश्टस्सर्वभूतानांततोभवतिराक्षसः । निहन्तिसमरेशत्रून् बध्नाति च शरोत्तमैः ।।6.87.5।।

adṛśṭassarvabhūtānāṃtatobhavatirākṣasḥ | nihantisamareśatrūn badhnāti ca śarottamaiḥ ||6.87.5||

Translation

ततः thereafter, राक्षसः Rakshasa, सर्वभूतानाम् for all beings, अदृश्यःinvisible, भवति becomes, समरे battle, शत्रून् enemies, निहन्ति kills, शरोत्तमैः best arrows, बध्नाति binds

Meaning

"Thereafter he becomes invisible for all beings and kills his enemies with the best of arrows and binds them."

YK-87-6Yuddha Kanda 87.6

तमप्रविष्टंन्यग्रोधंबलिनंरावणात्मजम् । विध्वंसयशरैर्दीप्टै: सरथंसाश्वसारथिम् ।।6.87.6।।

tamapraviṣṭṃnyagrodhṃbalinṃrāvaṇātmajam | vidhvṃsayaśarairdīpṭai: sarathṃsāśvasārathim ||6.87.6||

Translation

न्यग्रोधम् banyan tree, अप्रविष्टम् entering, बलिनम् mighty, सरथम् his chariot, साश्वसारथिम् horses and charioteer, तम् them, रावणात्मजम् Indrajith, दीप्टै: flaming, शरैः arrows, विध्वंसय destroy

Meaning

"Before he enters the banyan tree, you destroy Indrajith, with his chariot, horses and charioteer by the flaming arrows"

YK-87-7Yuddha Kanda 87.7

तथेत्युक्त्वामहातेजास्सौमित्रिर्मित्रनन्दनः । बभूवावस्थितस्तत्रचित्रंविस्फारयन्? धनुः ।।6.87.7।।

tathetyuktvāmahātejāssaumitrirmitranandanḥ | babhūvāvasthitastatracitrṃvisphārayan? dhanuḥ ||6.87.7||

Translation

महातेजाः brilliant, मित्रनन्दनः delight of friends, सौमित्रिः Saumithri, तथेति like that, उक्त्वा spoken, चित्रम् wonderful, धनुः bow, विस्फारयन् twanging, तत्र there, अवस्थितः stood, बभूव remained

Meaning

Brilliant Saumithri, delighted by his friends, twanging his wonderful bow stood there, after Vibheeshana had spoken to him.

YK-87-8Yuddha Kanda 87.8

स रथेनाग्निवर्णेनबलवान्रावणात्मजः । इन्द्रजित्कवचीखङ्गीसध्वजःप्रत्यदृश्यत ।।6.87.8।।

sa rathenāgnivarṇenabalavānrāvaṇātmajḥ | indrajitkavacīkhaṅgīsadhvajḥpratyadṛśyata ||6.87.8||

Translation

बलवान् endowed with mighty prowess, रावणात्मजःIndrajith, कवची shield, खङ्गी sword, सध्वजःdecorated with post, सःइन्द्रजित् that Indrajith, अग्निवर्णेन glowing like gold, रथेन in the chariot, प्रत्यदृश्यत appeared

Meaning

Indrajith, who was endowed with mighty prowess, armed with shield and sword, appeared like glowing gold in the chariot decorated with a post.

YK-87-9Yuddha Kanda 87.9

तमुवाचमहातेजाःपौलस्त्यमपराजितम् । समह्वयेत्वांसमरेसम्यग्युद्धंप्रयच्छमे ।।6.87.9।।

tamuvācamahātejāḥpaulastyamaparājitam | samahvayetvāṃsamaresamyagyuddhṃprayacchame ||6.87.9||

Translation

महातेजाः highly energetic, अपराजितम् who has never been defeated, तम् him, पौलस्त्यम् of Paulastya clan, उवाच said, ताम् to him, समरे in battle, समाह्वये challenging you, सम्यक् encounter, मे me, युद्धम् fight, प्रयच्छ directly

Meaning

Lakshmana of extraordinary energy, spoke to Indrajith of the Paulastya clan," I challenge you to fight in battle directly. Fight with me."

YK-87-10Yuddha Kanda 87.10

एवमुक्तोमहातेजामनस्वीरावणात्मजः । अब्रवीत्परुषंवाक्यंतत्रदृष्टवाविभीषणम् ।।6.87.10।।

evamuktomahātejāmanasvīrāvaṇātmajḥ | abravītparuṣṃvākyṃtatradṛṣṭavāvibhīṣaṇam ||6.87.10||

Translation

एवम् in that way, उक्तः having spoken, महातेजाः highly energetic, मनस्वी minded, रावणात्मजः Indrajith, तत्र there, विभीषणम् to Vibheeshana, दृष्टवा seeing, परुषम् harsh, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoken

Meaning

Having spoken that way, highly energetic and strong minded Indrajith seeing Vibheeshana spoke to him harshly as follows.

YK-87-11Yuddha Kanda 87.11

इहत्वंजातसम्वृद्धःसाक्षाद्भ्रातापितुर्मम । कथंद्रुह्यसिपुत्रस्यपितृव्योममराक्षस ।।6.87.11।।

ihatvṃjātasamvṛddhḥsākṣādbhrātāpiturmama | kathṃdruhyasiputrasyapitṛvyomamarākṣasa ||6.87.11||

Translation

राक्षस Rakshasa, त्वम् you, इह here, जातसम्वृद्धःborn and brought up, मम my, पितुः father, साक्षात् real, भ्राता brother, मम my, पितृव्यः father too, पुत्रस्यकथम् with son how, द्रुह्यसि hostile

Meaning

"O Rakshasa! You are born here and brought up by my father. You are my father'sbrother also. How can you be hostile to your son?"

YK-87-12Yuddha Kanda 87.12

न ज्ञातित्वं न सौहार्धं न जातिस्तवदुर्मते । प्रमाणं न च सौदर्यं न धर्मोधर्मदूषण ।।6.87.12।।

na jñātitvṃ na sauhārdhṃ na jātistavadurmate | pramāṇṃ na ca saudaryṃ na dharmodharmadūṣaṇa ||6.87.12||

Translation

दुर्मते evil minded, धर्मदूषण vitiating righteousness, तव your, ज्ञातित्वम् race, न प्रमाणम् not valuing, सौहार्दम् affection, न not, जातिः clan, न not, सौदर्यम् brotherly feeling, न not, धर्मः righteousness, न not

Meaning

"Evil minded Vibheeshana! You are vitiating righteousness, have no value to your race, no affection to your clan, no brotherly feeling and have no righteousness."

YK-87-13Yuddha Kanda 87.13

शोच्यस्त्वमसिदुर्बुद्धेनिन्दनीयश्चसाधुभिः । यस्त्वंस्वजनमुत्सृज्यपरभृत्यत्वमागतः ।।6.87.13।।

śocyastvamasidurbuddhenindanīyaścasādhubhiḥ | yastvṃsvajanamutsṛjyaparabhṛtyatvamāgatḥ ||6.87.13||

Translation

दुर्बुद्धे evil minded, त्वम् you, शोच्यः think, साधुभिः pitiable, निन्दनीयश्च blamed, असि also, यःत्वम् your, स्वजनम् your own people, उत्सृज्य sought, परभृत्यत्वम् enemy's protection, आगतः came

Meaning

"You are evil minded, think. You are pitiable and to be blamed for you have abandoned your own people and sought the enemy's protection."

YK-87-14Yuddha Kanda 87.14

नैतछचिथिलयाबुद्ध्यात्वंवेसतिमहदन्तरम् । क्व च स्वजनसम्वासःक्व च नीचपराश्रयः ।।6.87.14।।

naitachacithilayābuddhyātvṃvesatimahadantaram | kva ca svajanasamvāsḥkva ca nīcaparāśrayḥ ||6.87.14||

Translation

स्वजनसम्वासः living with own people, क्व च is it that, नीचपराश्रयः seeking refuge from strangers, क्वच is it that, एतत् this, महत् great, अन्तरम् understanding, त्वम् you, शिथिलयता slackened, बुद्ध्या intellect, न वेसति not knowing

Meaning

"You do not seem to have an understanding of the difference between living with one's own people and seeking refuge from strangers. Your intellect has slackened you are not knowing."

YK-87-15Yuddha Kanda 87.15

गुणवान्वापरजनःस्वजनोनिर्गुणोऽपिवा । निर्गुणःस्वजनःश्रेयान् यःपरःपरएवसः ।।6.87.15।।

guṇavānvāparajanḥsvajanonirguṇo'pivā | nirguṇḥsvajanḥśreyān yḥparḥparaevasḥ ||6.87.15||

Translation

परजनः others, गुणवान्वा virtuous, स्वजनः own people, निर्गुणोपिवा not virtuous also, निर्गुणः not virtuous, स्वजनः own people, श्रेयान् welfare, यः that which, परः others, सः he, परएवहि even if he

Meaning

"Even if others are virtuous and your own people are not virtuous also one should seek the refuge of one's own people. Strangers are always strangers."

YK-87-16Yuddha Kanda 87.16

यसस्स्वपक्षंपरित्यज्यपरपक्षंनिषेवते । स स्वपक्षेक्ष्यंप्राप्तेपश्चास्त्तैरेवहन्यते ।।6.87.16।।

yasassvapakṣṃparityajyaparapakṣṃniṣevate | sa svapakṣekṣyṃprāptepaścāsttairevahanyate ||6.87.16||

Translation

यः he who, स्वपक्षम् own side, परित्यज्य renouncing, परपक्षम् others side, निषेवते seeks refuge, सःhe, स्वपक्षे own side, क्ष्यम् destruction, प्राप्ते happens, पश्चात् whose refuge was sought, तैरेव by them only, हन्यते destroyed

Meaning

"He who renounces his own kind and seeks refuge from others, will be destroyed by others whose refuge he sought when his own people are destroyed."

YK-87-17Yuddha Kanda 87.17

निरनुक्रोशताचेयंयादृशीतेनिशाचर । स्वजनेनत्वयाशक्यंपौरुषंरावणानुज ।।6.87.17।।

niranukrośatāceyṃyādṛśīteniśācara | svajanenatvayāśakyṃpauruṣṃrāvaṇānuja ||6.87.17||

Translation

रावणानुज Ravana's brother, निशाचर night ranger, ते you, इयम् this, यादृशी way, निरनुक्रोशता ruthlessness, पौरुषम् manliness, स्वजनेन own people, त्वया by you, शक्यम् is possible

Meaning

"O Ravana's brother! You have shown ruthlessness this way. O night ranger! Only you could exhibit this kind of manliness."

YK-87-18Yuddha Kanda 87.18

इत्युक्तोभ्रातृपुत्रेणप्रत्युवाचविभीषणः । अजानन्निवमछचीलंकिंराक्षसविकत्थसे ।।6.87.18।।

ityuktobhrātṛputreṇapratyuvācavibhīṣaṇḥ | ajānannivamachacīlṃkiṃrākṣasavikatthase ||6.87.18||

Translation

भ्रातृपुत्रेण brother's son, इति thus, उक्तःhaving spoken, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, प्रत्युवाच replied back, राक्षस Rakshasa, मछचीलम् my disposition, अजानन्निव as though you did not know, किम् why, विकत्थसे speak like this

Meaning

Indrajith having spoken like that, Vibheeshana replied," why do you speak like that as though you do not know my disposition?"

YK-87-19Yuddha Kanda 87.19

राक्षसेन्द्रसुतासाधोपारुष्यंत्यजगौरवात् । कुलेयद्यप्यहंजातोरक्षसांक्रूरकर्मणाम् ।।6.87.19।। गुणोयःप्रथमोनृणंतन्मेशीलमराक्षसम् ।

rākṣasendrasutāsādhopāruṣyṃtyajagauravāt | kuleyadyapyahṃjātorakṣasāṃkrūrakarmaṇām ||6.87.19|| guṇoyḥprathamonṛṇṃtanmeśīlamarākṣasam |

Translation

असाधो impious, राक्षसेन्द्रसुत son of Rakshasa king, गौरवात् respectfully, पारुष्यम् manliness, त्यज renounce, अहम् I, क्रूरकर्मणाम् cruel deeds, रक्षसाम् Rakshasas, कुले clan, जातःयद्यपि though born, नृणाम् king, यः he who, प्रथमः primary, गुणः quality, तत् that, मे I, अराक्षसम् not Rakshasa like, शीलम् nature

Meaning

"Impious son of Rakshasa king! Though born in the Rakshasa clan I renounced cruel deeds and followed respectfully manliness as my primary quality. My nature is not like that of Rakshasas."

YK-87-20Yuddha Kanda 87.20

न रमेदारुणेनाहं न चाधर्मेणवैरमे ।।6.87.20।। भ्रात्राविषशीलोऽपिकथंभ्रातानिरस्यते ।

na ramedāruṇenāhṃ na cādharmeṇavairame ||6.87.20|| bhrātrāviṣaśīlo'pikathṃbhrātānirasyate |

Translation

अहम् I, दारुणेन cruel, न रमे not revel, अधर्मेण च unrighteousness, न रमेवै not follow, विषमशीलोऽपि of unfavourable disposition, भ्राता a brother, भ्रात्रा by a brother, कथम् how निरस्यते expelled

Meaning

"I do not delight in cruel deeds, nor follow unrighteousness. Or else because of unfavourable disposition how can a brother be expelled by a brother?"

YK-87-21Yuddha Kanda 87.21

धर्मात्प्रच्युतशीलंहिपुरुषंपापनिश्चयम् ।।6.87.21।। त्यक्त्वासुखमवाप्नोतिहस्तादाशीविषंयथा ।

dharmātpracyutaśīlṃhipuruṣṃpāpaniścayam ||6.87.21|| tyaktvāsukhamavāpnotihastādāśīviṣṃyathā |

Translation

धर्मात् righteous, प्रच्युतशीलम् who has renounced, पापनिश्चयम् of sinful deeds, पुरुषम् man, हस्तात् from hand, आशीविषंयथा venomous serpent, त्यक्त्वा renouncing, सुखम् happiness, अवाप्नोति attains

Meaning

"The association of one who has renounced righteousness and is of sinful deeds is left by a righteous man who undoubtedly attains happiness, is like shaking of a venomous serpent from the hand."

YK-87-22Yuddha Kanda 87.22

परस्वहरणेयुक्तंपरदाराभिमर्शकम् ।।6.87.22।। त्याज्यमाहुर्दुरात्मानंवेश्मप्रज्वलितंयथा ।

parasvaharaṇeyuktṃparadārābhimarśakam ||6.87.22|| tyājyamāhurdurātmānṃveśmaprajvalitṃyathā |

Translation

परस्वहरणे seizing property of others, युक्तम् united, परदाराभिमर्शकम् with others wife, दुरात्मानम् evil mindedness, प्रज्वलितम् burning, वेश्मयथा like house, त्याज्यम् getting out, आहुःit is said

Meaning

"Seizing the property of others, uniting with others wife, evil mindedness is said to be given up like getting out of a burning house."

YK-87-23Yuddha Kanda 87.23

परस्वानां च हरणंपरदाराभिमर्शनम् ।।6.87.23।। सुहृदामतिशङ्का च त्रयोदोषाःक्षयावहाः ।

parasvānāṃ ca haraṇṃparadārābhimarśanam ||6.87.23|| suhṛdāmatiśaṅkā ca trayodoṣāḥkṣayāvahāḥ |

Translation

परस्वानाम् others wealth, हरणम् stealing, परदाराभिमर्शनम् possessing others wife, सुहृदाम् friends, अतिशङ्का च distrusting, त्रयःदोषाः three faults, क्षयावहाः will destroy

Meaning

"Stealing the wealth of others, possessing others wife, distrusting friends, these three faults will destroy a person."

YK-87-24-25Yuddha Kanda 87.24–25 (युग्मम्)

महर्षीणांवधोघोरस्सर्वदेवैश्चविग्रहः ।।6.87.24।। अभिमानश्चदोषश्चवैरित्वंप्रतिकूलता । एतेदोषाममभ्रातुर्जीवितैश्वर्यनाशनाः ।।6.87.25।। गुणान्प्रच्छादयामासुःपर्वतानिवतोयदाः ।

maharṣīṇāṃvadhoghorassarvadevaiścavigrahḥ ||6.87.24|| abhimānaścadoṣaścavairitvṃpratikūlatā | etedoṣāmamabhrāturjīvitaiśvaryanāśanāḥ ||6.87.25|| guṇānpracchādayāmāsuḥparvatānivatoyadāḥ |

Translation

महर्षीणाम् sages, घोरः dreadful, वधः killing, सर्वदेवैः all deities, विग्रहः च haughtiness, अभिमानश्च irascibility, रोषः च anger, वैरित्वं च animosity, प्रतिकूलता refractoriness, जीवितैश्वरनाशनाः put an end to one's life, एते all these, दोषाः faults, मम my, भ्रातुः brother's, गुणान् qualities, तोयदाः rainy clouds, पर्वतानिव mountains, प्रच्छादयामासुः put an end to future

Meaning

"Dreadful killing of sages, haughtiness towards deities, irascibility, anger, animosity, refractorinessall these faults will put an end to one's life. These faults have obscured my brother's future just as rainy clouds veil the mountain."

YK-87-26Yuddha Kanda 87.26

दोषैरेतैःपरित्यक्तोमयाभ्रातापितातव ।।6.87.26।। नेयमस्तिपुरीलङ्का न च त्वं न च तेपिता ।

doṣairetaiḥparityaktomayābhrātāpitātava ||6.87.26|| neyamastipurīlaṅkā na ca tvṃ na ca tepitā |

Translation

तव your, पिता father, भ्राता brother, एतैःदोषैः these faults, मया by me, परित्यक्तःaband oned, इयम् this, लङ्कापुरी Lanka city, न अस्ति not be there, त्वम् च you too, न not, ते to you, पिता च father, न not

Meaning

"Because of these faults your father and my brother has been abandoned by me from this Lanka. This Lanka will not be there, nor your father and you too."

YK-87-27Yuddha Kanda 87.27

अतिमाननी च बालश्चदुर्विनीतश्चराक्षस । बद्धस्त्वंकालपाशेनब्रूहिमांयद्यदिच्छसि ।।6.87.27।।

atimānanī ca bālaścadurvinītaścarākṣasa | baddhastvṃkālapāśenabrūhimāṃyadyadicchasi ||6.87.27||

Translation

राक्षस Rakshasa, अतिमानी च mean, बालश्च proud of might, दुर्विनीतश्च immoral, कालपाशेन by noose of death, बद्धः bound, त्वम् your, माम् my, यत् यत् Whatever, इच्छसि wish to say, ब्रूहि say

Meaning

"O Rakshasa! You are mean, proud of might, immoral and bound by the noose of death. Whatever you wish to say you may say."

YK-87-28Yuddha Kanda 87.28

अद्यतेव्यसनंप्राप्तंकिंमांत्वामिहवक्ष्यसि । प्रवेष्टुं न त्वयाशक्यंन्यग्रोधंराक्षसाधम ।।6.87.28।।

adyatevyasanṃprāptṃkiṃmāṃtvāmihavakṣyasi | praveṣṭuṃ na tvayāśakyṃnyagrodhṃrākṣasādhama ||6.87.28||

Translation

राक्षसाधम lowly among Rakshasas, किं why, त्वम् your, वक्ष्यसि to you, अद्य today, इह here, व्यसनम् worry, प्राप्तम्? come, त्वया by you, न्यग्रोधम् banyan tree, प्रवेष्टुम् entering, न शक्यम् not possible

Meaning

"O Lowly Rakshasa! This worry has come to you today. Entering the banyan tree is not possible for you today."

YK-87-29Yuddha Kanda 87.29

धर्षयित्वा च काकुत्स्थं न शक्यंजीवितुंत्वया । युध्यस्वनरदेवेनलक्ष्मणेनरणेसह ।।6.87.29।। हतस्त्वंदेवताकार्यंकरिष्यसियमक्षये ।

dharṣayitvā ca kākutsthṃ na śakyṃjīvituṃtvayā | yudhyasvanaradevenalakṣmaṇenaraṇesaha ||6.87.29|| hatastvṃdevatākāryṃkariṣyasiyamakṣaye |

Translation

काकुत्स्थम् Kakuthsa, धर्षयित्वा clashing, त्वया by you, जीवितुम् life, न शक्यम् not possible, रणए in combat, नरदेवेन god of retribution, लक्ष्मणेनसहस with Lakshmana, युध्यस्व waging war, त्वम् you, हतः killed, यमक्षये abode of yama, देवताकार्यम् tasks of Devatas, करिष्यसि will be doing

Meaning

"Clashing with Lakshmana of Kakuthsa clan is not possible for you. By waging war with Lakshmana, you will be killed and reaching the abode of the Lord of death. You will be doing tasks of deities of Devatas."
