YK-8-1Yuddha Kanda 8.1

ततोनीलाम्बुदनिभ: प्रहस्तोनामराक्षसः । अब्रवीत्प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यंशूरस्सेनापतिस्तदा ।।6.8.1।।

tatonīlāmbudanibha: prahastonāmarākṣasḥ | abravītprāñjalirvākyṃśūrassenāpatistadā ||6.8.1||

Translation

ततः then, शूरः hero, सेनापतिः chief of army, नीलाम्बुदनिभ: one whose body is like dark cloud, प्रहस्तोनाम: called Prahastha, राक्षसः Rakshasa, प्राञ्जलिः with folded palms, वाक्यम् these words. अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Then a Rakshasa whose body was like a dark cloud, called Prahastha, the heroic chief of the army, spoke these words with folded palms.

YK-8-2Yuddha Kanda 8.2

देवदानवगन्धर्वाःपिशाचपतगोरगाः । नत्वांधर्षयितुंशक्याःकिंपुनर्वानरारणे ।।6.8.2।।

devadānavagandharvāḥpiśācapatagoragāḥ | natvāṃdharṣayituṃśakyāḥkiṃpunarvānarāraṇe ||6.8.2||

Translation

देवदानवगन्धर्वाः Devas, Danavas, Gandharvas, पिशाचपतगोरगाः Devils, birds and even serpents, सर्वे: all, रणे: in war, धर्षयितुम् to face you, नशक्याः not possible, वानरा: Vanaras, किंपुनः What to say.

Meaning

"Even Devas, Danavas, Gandharvas, Devils, birds, and serpents, cannot face you in war. What to say of Vanaras?"

YK-8-3Yuddha Kanda 8.3

सर्वेप्रमत्ताविश्वस्तावञ्चितास्स्महनूमता । नहिमेजीवतोगच्छेज्जीवन् सवनगोचरः ।।6.8.3।।

sarvepramattāviśvastāvañcitāssmahanūmatā | nahimejīvatogacchejjīvan savanagocarḥ ||6.8.3||

Translation

अप्रमत्ता: inattentive, विश्वस्ताः confident, सर्वे: all of us, हनूमता: Hanuman, वञ्चिताःस्म: cheated us, मे: when I, जीवतः living, सः he, वनगोचरः wanderer of woods, जीवन् with life, नगच्छेत् हि: will not go.

Meaning

All of us were inattentive and confident (of our ability) while Hanuman cheated us. When I am alive how will the wanderer of woods (Hanuman) go with life?

YK-8-4Yuddha Kanda 8.4

सर्वांसागरपर्यन्तांसशैलवनकाननाम् । करोम्यवानरांभूमिमाज्ञापयतुमांभवान् ।।6.8.4।।

sarvāṃsāgaraparyantāṃsaśailavanakānanām | karomyavānarāṃbhūmimājñāpayatumāṃbhavān ||6.8.4||

Translation

सागरपर्यन्ताम् all over the ocean, सशैलवनकाननाम् in the mountains and forests, सर्वाम् entire, भूमिम् the earth, अवानराम् rid of Vanaras, करोमि: will do, भवान् your, माम् me, आज्ञापयतु: if you order

Meaning

"I will make all the oceans, mountains, forests or even the entire earth rid of Vanaras if you order me."

YK-8-5Yuddha Kanda 8.5

रक्षांचैवविधास्यामिवानराद्रजनीचर । नागमिष्यतितेदुःखंकिञ्चिदात्मापराधजम् ।।6.8.5।।

rakṣāṃcaivavidhāsyāmivānarādrajanīcara | nāgamiṣyatiteduḥkhṃkiñcidātmāparādhajam ||6.8.5||

Translation

रजनीचर: O night ranger (Ravana), वानरात् by these Vanaras, रक्षांचैव: will protect, विधास्यामि: I will arrange, ते: by you, आत्मापराधजम् your own wrong action, दुःखम् grief, किञ्चित् even a little, नागमिष्यति: not undergo

Meaning

"O night ranger (Ravana) I will arrange the protection (of this Lanka) from these Vanaras. For your own wrong action (of abducting Sita) you cannot undergo suffering."

YK-8-6Yuddha Kanda 8.6

अब्रवीच्चसुसङ्कृद्धोदुर्मुखोनामराक्षसः । इदंनक्षमणीयंहिसर्वेषांनःप्रधर्षणम् ।।6.8.6।।

abravīccasusaṅkṛddhodurmukhonāmarākṣasḥ | idṃnakṣamaṇīyṃhisarveṣāṃnḥpradharṣaṇam ||6.8.6||

Translation

दुर्मुखोनाम: called Durmukha, राक्षसः Rakshasa, सुसङ्कृद्ध: feeling very angry, च: and, अब्रवीत् said, नः nay, सर्वेषाम् for all of us, इदम् this, प्रधर्षणम् shame, नक्षमणीयंहि: not deserve to be excused.

Meaning

Feeling very angry, a Rakshasa called Durmukha said, "He who has caused shame for all of us does not deserve to be excused."

YK-8-7Yuddha Kanda 8.7

अयंपरिभवोभूयःपुरस्यान्तःपुरस्यच । श्रीमतोराक्षसेन्द्रस्यवानरेणप्रधर्षणम् ।।6.8.7।।

ayṃparibhavobhūyḥpurasyāntḥpurasyaca | śrīmatorākṣasendrasyavānareṇapradharṣaṇam ||6.8.7||

Translation

पुरस्य: to Lanka, अन्तःपुरस्यच: and to the royal residence, अयम् this, परिभवः despising, श्रीमतः one who is prosperous, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य: to the Lord of Rakshasas, वानरेण: by Vanara, प्रधर्षणम् assaulting, भूयः Furthermore.

Meaning

"Furthermore, this assault by a Vanara on Lanka, to the royal residence, and to the prosperous Lord of Rakshasas is despising."

YK-8-8Yuddha Kanda 8.8

अस्मिन् मुहूर्तेगत्वैकोनिवर्तिष्यामिवानरान् । प्रविष्टान् सागरंभीममम्बरंवारसातलम् ।।6.8.8।।

asmin muhūrtegatvaikonivartiṣyāmivānarān | praviṣṭān sāgarṃbhīmamambarṃvārasātalam ||6.8.8||

Translation

अस्मिन् this, मुहूर्ते: very minute, एकः alone, गत्व: going, सागरम् ocean, भीमम् terrific, रसातलम् the underworld, अम्बरंवा: or the upper world, प्रविष्टान् entering, वानरान् the monkey, निवर्तिष्यामि: I will put an end.

Meaning

At this very minute I will go alone into the terrific ocean, to the underworld or the upper world and on entering put an end to the monkey.

YK-8-9Yuddha Kanda 8.9

ततोऽब्रवीत्सुसङ्कृद्धोवज्रदंष्ट्रोमहाबलः । प्रगृह्यपरिघंघोरंमांसशोणितरूषितम् ।।6.8.9।।

tato'bravītsusaṅkṛddhovajradṃṣṭromahābalḥ | pragṛhyaparighṃghorṃmāṃsaśoṇitarūṣitam ||6.8.9||

Translation

ततः then, महाबल: mighty, वज्रदंष्ट्रः one who has diamond like strong teeth, सुसङ्कृद्ध: highly enraged, मांसशोणितरूषितम् stained with flesh and blood, घोरम् dreadful, परिघम् iron bludgeon, प्रगृह्य: clasping, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Then a mighty strong one who was endowed with diamond like teeth highly enraged, clasping a dreadful iron bludgeon stained with flesh and blood spoke.

YK-8-10Yuddha Kanda 8.10

किंवोहनुमताकार्यंकृपणेनतपस्विना । रामेतिष्ठतिदुर्धर्षेससुग्रीवेऽपिसलक्ष्मणे ।।6.8.10।।

kiṃvohanumatākāryṃkṛpaṇenatapasvinā | rāmetiṣṭhatidurdharṣesasugrīve'pisalakṣmaṇe ||6.8.10||

Translation

दुर्धर्षे: one who is unassailable, रामे: while Rama, सलक्ष्मणे: along with Lakshmana, ससुग्रीवेऽपि: and also Sugriva, तिष्ठति: is there, कृपणेन: pitiable तपस्विना: helpless, हनुमता: with Hanuman, व: for us, कार्यम् work, किम् what.

Meaning

"While unassailable Rama is there, along with Lakshmana and Sugriva, what have we to do with miserable, pitiable and helpless Hanuman?"

YK-8-11Yuddha Kanda 8.11

अद्यरामंससुग्रीवंपरिघेणसलक्ष्मणम् । आगमिष्यामिहत्वैकोविक्षोभ्यहरिवाहिनीम् ।।6.8.11।।

adyarāmṃsasugrīvṃparigheṇasalakṣmaṇam | āgamiṣyāmihatvaikovikṣobhyaharivāhinīm ||6.8.11||

Translation

अद्य: now, एकः alone, परिघेण: by the iron crow bar, ससुग्रीववम् that Sugriva, सलक्ष्मणम् and that Lakshmana, रामम् and Rama also, हत्वा: killing, हरिवाहिनीम् Vanara troops, विक्षोभ्य: after shattering, आगमिष्यामि: would return.

Meaning

"Now I would go alone and with the iron crowbar, kill Sugriva Lakshmana and Rama and return after shattering the Vanara troops."

YK-8-12Yuddha Kanda 8.12

इदंममापरंवाक्यंशृणुराजन् यदीच्छसि । उपायकुशलोह्येवजयेच्छत्रूनतन्द्रितः ।।6.8.12।।

idṃmamāparṃvākyṃśṛṇurājan yadīcchasi | upāyakuśalohyevajayecchatrūnatandritḥ ||6.8.12||

Translation

राजन् O king, यदिइच्छसि: if you like, मम: my, अपरम् another, इदंवाक्यम् this statement, शृणु: you listen, उपायकुशलःएव: only one who is cunning, अतन्द्रितः one who is vigilant, शत्रून् enemy, जयेत् हि: would win.

Meaning

"O King If you like, listen to my other statement: One who is cunning and is vigilant would win over an enemy."

YK-8-13-14Yuddha Kanda 8.13–14 (युग्मम्)

कामरूपधराश्शूरास्सुभीमाभीमदर्शनाः । राक्षसावैसहस्राणिराक्षसाधिपनिश्चिताः ।।6.8.13।। काकुत्स्थमुपसङ्गम्यबिभ्रतोमानुषंवपुः । सर्वेह्यसम्भ्रमाभूत्वाब्रुवन्तुरघुसत्तमम् ।।6.8.14।।

kāmarūpadharāśśūrāssubhīmābhīmadarśanāḥ | rākṣasāvaisahasrāṇirākṣasādhipaniścitāḥ ||6.8.13|| kākutsthamupasaṅgamyabibhratomānuṣṃvapuḥ | sarvehyasambhramābhūtvābruvanturaghusattamam ||6.8.14||

Translation

राक्षसाधिप: Lord of Rakshasas, कामरूपधराः one who is capable of assuming any form at free will, शूराः hero, सुभीमाः very fearful, भीमदर्शनाः of frightful appearance, सहस्राणि: thousands of, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, निश्चिताः determined, मानुषम् human, वपुः body, बिभ्रतः wearing, काकुत्स्थम् of Kakutstha dynasty, उपसङ्गम्य: going near, सर्वे: all, असम्भ्रमाः without any agitation, रघुसत्तमम् the foremost of Raghu dynasty, ब्रुवन्तु: should tell.

Meaning

"O Lord of Rakshasas Thousands of fearful Rakshasas capable of assuming any form at free will, heroic ones of frightful appearance should tell Rama the foremost of Raghus, quietly going near him in human form."

YK-8-15Yuddha Kanda 8.15

प्रेषिताभरतेनैवभ्रात्रातवयवीयसा । सहिसेनांसमुत्थाप्यक्षिप्रमेवोपयास्यति ।।6.8.15।।

preṣitābharatenaivabhrātrātavayavīyasā | sahisenāṃsamutthāpyakṣipramevopayāsyati ||6.8.15||

Translation

तव: your, यवीयसा: younger, भ्रात्रा: brother, भरतेनैव: by Bharata, प्रेषिताः sent by, सः he, सेनाम् army, समुत्थाप्य: taking, क्षिप्रमेव: very soon, उपस्थास्यति: is coming.

Meaning

"'We have been sent by your younger brother Bharata and he is coming here very soon with the army."

YK-8-16Yuddha Kanda 8.16

ततोवयमितस्तूर्णंशूलशक्तिगदाधराः । चापबाणासिहस्ताश्चत्वरितास्तत्रयामहे ।।6.8.16।।

tatovayamitastūrṇṃśūlaśaktigadādharāḥ | cāpabāṇāsihastāścatvaritāstatrayāmahe ||6.8.16||

Translation

ततः then, वयम् we, शूलशक्तिगदाधराः tridents, javelins and maces, चापबाणासि: swords and arrows, हस्ताश्च: wielding, इतः from here, तूर्णम् soon, तत्र: there, त्वरिताः quickly, यामहे: will go.

Meaning

"Then from here we will go there wielding tridents, javelins, maces, swords and arrows."

YK-8-17Yuddha Kanda 8.17

आकाशेगणशस्थ्सित्वाहत्वातांहरिवाहिनीम् । अश्मशस्त्रमहावृष्ट्याप्रापयामयमक्षयम् ।।6.8.17।।

ākāśegaṇaśasthsitvāhatvātāṃharivāhinīm | aśmaśastramahāvṛṣṭyāprāpayāmayamakṣayam ||6.8.17||

Translation

आकाशे: from the sky, गणशः in groups, स्थित्वा: staying there, ताम् those, हरिवाहिनीम् Vanara troops, अश्मशस्त्रमहावृष्ट्या: astras, sastras, boulders, हत्वा: killing, यमक्षयम् to the abode of Yama, प्रापयाम: will send

Meaning

Staying in the sky in groups, we will rain astras, sastras and boulders on the Vanara troops and on killing them, we shall send them to the abode of God of death.

YK-8-18Yuddha Kanda 8.18

एवंचेदुपसर्पेतामनयंरामलक्ष्मणौ । अवश्यमपनीतेनजहतामेवजीवितम् ।।6.8.18।।

evṃcedupasarpetāmanayṃrāmalakṣmaṇau | avaśyamapanītenajahatāmevajīvitam ||6.8.18||

Translation

रामलक्ष्मणौ: Rama and Lakshmana, एवम् that way, अनयम् distressed, उपसर्पेतांयदि: they will succumb, अवश्यमेव: certainly, अपनीतेन: cunning ways, जीवितम्: life, जहतामेव: giving up.

Meaning

"When Rama and Lakshmana are distressed that way, they would certainly succumb to our cunning ways and give up life."

YK-8-19Yuddha Kanda 8.19

कौम्भकर्णिस्ततोवीरोनिकुम्भोनामवीर्यवान् । अब्रवीत्परमक्रुद्धोरावणंलोकरावणम् ।।6.8.19।।

kaumbhakarṇistatovīronikumbhonāmavīryavān | abravītparamakruddhorāvaṇṃlokarāvaṇam ||6.8.19||

Translation

ततः thereafter, कौम्भकर्णिः Son of Kumbhakarna, वीरः hero, वीर्यवान् valiant, निकुम्भोनाम: called Nikumbha, परमक्रुद्ध: highly enraged, लोकरावणम् one who makes the world cry, रावणम् Ravana, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Thereafter the enraged heroic and valiant son of Kumbhakarna called Nikumbha said to Ravana, who made the world cry.

YK-8-20Yuddha Kanda 8.20

सर्वेभवन्तस्तिष्ठन्तुमहाराजेनसङ्गताः । अहमेकोहनिष्यामिराघवंसहलक्ष्मणम् ।।6.8.20।। सुग्रीवञ्चहनूमन्तंसर्वांनेवचवानरान् ।

sarvebhavantastiṣṭhantumahārājenasaṅgatāḥ | ahamekohaniṣyāmirāghavṃsahalakṣmaṇam ||6.8.20|| sugrīvañcahanūmantṃsarvāṃnevacavānarān |

Translation

भवन्तः of you, सर्वे: all, महाराजेन: King's, सङ्गताः along with, तिष्ठन्तु: stay here, अहम् I, एकः alone, सहलक्ष्मणम् along with Lakshmana, राघवम् that Rama, सहानूमन्तम् and with Hanuman, सुग्रीवंच: Sugriva also, सर्वानेव: everyone, वानरान्: those Vanaras, च also, हनिष्यामि will kill.

Meaning

"Let all of you stay here along with the king. Going alone I will kill Rama along with Lakshmana, and Hanuman also Sugriva and all of the Vanaras."

YK-8-21Yuddha Kanda 8.21

ततोवज्रहनुर्नामराक्षसःपर्वतोपमः ।।6.8.21।। क्रुद्ध: परिलिहन्सृक्कांजिह्वयावाक्यमब्रवीत् ।

tatovajrahanurnāmarākṣasḥparvatopamḥ ||6.8.21|| kruddha: parilihansṛkkāṃjihvayāvākyamabravīt |

Translation

ततः then, पर्वतोपमः one of mountain like form, वज्रहनुर्नाम Vajrahanu, राक्षसः Rakshasa, क्रुद्ध: angry, जिह्वया: with tongue, सृक्काम् lips, परिलिहन् licking, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Then a Rakshasa called Vajrahanu, mountain like in form, enraged, licking lips with his tongue said these words.

YK-8-22-23Yuddha Kanda 8.22–23 (युग्मम्)

स्वैरंकुर्वन्तुकर्माणिभवन्तोविगतज्वराः ।।6.8.22।। एकोऽहंभक्षयिष्यामितांसर्वांहरियूथपान् । स्वस्थाःक्रीडन्तुनिश्चिन्ताःपिबन्तुमधुवारुणीम् ।।6.8.23।।

svairṃkurvantukarmāṇibhavantovigatajvarāḥ ||6.8.22|| eko'hṃbhakṣayiṣyāmitāṃsarvāṃhariyūthapān | svasthāḥkrīḍantuniścintāḥpibantumadhuvāruṇīm ||6.8.23||

Translation

भवन्तः all of you, विगतज्वराः giving up fear, स्वैरम् freely, कर्माणि: duties कुर्वन्तु: doing, स्वस्थाः moving happily, क्रीडन्तु: sporting, निश्चिन्ताः without any anxiety, वारुणंमधु: sweet wine, पिबन्तु: drinking, अहम् I, एकः single handed, ताम् them, सर्वाम् all, हरियूथपान् Vanara army, भक्षयिष्यामि: will consume.

Meaning

All of you giving up fear, do your duties freely move happily sporting and drinking sweet wine. Single handed, I will consume all the Vanara army.

YK-8-24Yuddha Kanda 8.24

अहमेकोवधिष्यामिसुग्रीवंसहलक्ष्मणम् । साङ्गदंचहनूमन्तंरामंचरणकुञ्जरम् ।।6.8.24।।

ahamekovadhiṣyāmisugrīvṃsahalakṣmaṇam | sāṅgadṃcahanūmantṃrāmṃcaraṇakuñjaram ||6.8.24||

Translation

अहम् I, एकः alone, सहलक्ष्मणम् with Lakshmana, सुग्रीवम् and Sugriva, साङ्गदम् that Angada, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman, रणकुञ्जरम् army, रामम् च: and Rama, वधिष्यामि: will kill.

Meaning

"I alone will kill that Rama with Lakshmana, Sugriva, that Angada, Hanuman and the Vanara army." ।।इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेअष्टमस्सर्गः।। This is the end of the eighth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
