YK-71-1-3Yuddha Kanda 71.1–3 (त्रिकम्)

स्वबलंव्यथितंदृष्टवातुमुलंरोमहर्षणम् । भ्रातृ़ंश्चनिहतान् दृष्टवाशक्रतुल्यपराक्रमान् ।।6.71.1।। पितृव्यौचापिसनृदृश्यसमरेसन्निघादितौ । युद्धोन्मत्तं च मत्तं च भ्रातरौराक्षसर्षभौ ।।6.71.2।। चुकोप च महातेजाब्रह्मदत्तवरोयुधि । अतिकायोऽद्रिसङ्काशोदेवदानवदर्पहा ।।6.71.3।।

svabalṃvyathitṃdṛṣṭavātumulṃromaharṣaṇam | bhrātṛ़ṃścanihatān dṛṣṭavāśakratulyaparākramān ||6.71.1|| pitṛvyaucāpisanṛdṛśyasamaresannighāditau | yuddhonmattṃ ca mattṃ ca bhrātaraurākṣasarṣabhau ||6.71.2|| cukopa ca mahātejābrahmadattavaroyudhi | atikāyo'drisaṅkāśodevadānavadarpahā ||6.71.3||

Translation

महातेजाः highly energetic, ब्रह्मदत्तवरः who had obtained boons from Brahma, अद्रिसङ्काशः mountain like form, युधि in battle, देवदानवदर्पहा who subdued the pride of Devas and Danavas, अतिकायः of huge body, तुमुलम् making a tumultuous sound, रोमहर्षणम् horripilation, स्वबलम् his own army, व्यथितम् killed, दृष्टवा seeing, शक्रतुल्यपराक्रमान् equal to Indra in valour, भ्रातृ़न् च brothers, निहतान् killed, दृष्टवा seeing, पितृव्वौ uncles, राक्षसर्षभौ bulls among Rakshasas, भ्रातरौ brothers, युद्धोन्मतं च Yuddhomatta, मत्तं च Matta, समरे in conflict, सन्निघादितौ collected together, सन्द्दृश्य seeing, चुकोप च was furious.

Meaning

Highly energetic Atikaya, who was like a mountain in form, had huge body, obtained boons from Brahma, subdued the pride of Devas and Danavas, was equal to Indra in valour. Seeing his own army of Rakshasas that caused horripilation, uncles who were bulls among Rakshasas struck down in the battlefield and his own brothers Yuddhotama (Mahodara) and Matta (Mahaparsva) struck down, he flew in rage.

YK-71-4Yuddha Kanda 71.4

स भास्करसहस्रस्यसङ्घातमिवभास्वरम् । रथमास्थायशक्रारिरभिदुद्राववानरान् ।।6.71.4।।

sa bhāskarasahasrasyasaṅghātamivabhāsvaram | rathamāsthāyaśakrārirabhidudrāvavānarān ||6.71.4||

Translation

शक्रारिः crowned, सः he, भासरसहस्रस्य thousand suns, सङ्घातमिव collected, भास्वरम् glowing, रथम् chariot, आस्थाय mounted, वानरान् Vanaras, अभिदुद्राव darted towards.

Meaning

Adorned with a crown, Ravana glowing like a thousand suns collected together mounted the chariot and darted towards Vanaras.

YK-71-5Yuddha Kanda 71.5

स विस्फार्यमहाचापंकिरीटीमृष्टकुण्डलः । नामविश्रावयामासननाद च महास्वनम् ।।6.71.5।।

sa visphāryamahācāpṃkirīṭīmṛṣṭakuṇḍalḥ | nāmaviśrāvayāmāsananāda ca mahāsvanam ||6.71.5||

Translation

किरीटी adorned with crown, मृष्टकुण्डलः polished earrings, सः he, महा great, चापम् bow, विस्फार्य twanging,नाम name, विश्रावयामास proclaimed, महास्वनम् sounding aloud, ननाद च roared.

Meaning

Adorned with crown, and polished earrings, twanging his bow, proclaimed his name and roared sounding aloud.

YK-71-6Yuddha Kanda 71.6

तेनसिंहप्रणादेननामविश्रावणेन च । ज्याशब्देन च भीमेनत्रासयामासवानरान् ।।6.71.6।।

tenasiṃhapraṇādenanāmaviśrāvaṇena ca | jyāśabdena ca bhīmenatrāsayāmāsavānarān ||6.71.6||

Translation

तेन by that, सिंहप्रणादेन lion roar, नामविश्रावणेन च proclamation of his name, भीमेन frightening, ज्याशब्देन च by that sound, वानरान् Vanaras, त्रासयामास struck terror.

Meaning

By that lionroar, and proclamation of his name (by the sound of the twang) frightening the Vanaras he struck terror.

YK-71-7Yuddha Kanda 71.7

तेदृष्टवादेहमाहात्म्यंकुम्भकर्णोऽयमुथतितः । भयार्तावानरास्सर्वेसंश्रयन्तेपरस्परम् ।।6.71.7।।

tedṛṣṭavādehamāhātmyṃkumbhakarṇo'yamuthatitḥ | bhayārtāvānarāssarvesṃśrayanteparasparam ||6.71.7||

Translation

सर्वे all, तेवानराः those Vanaras, देहमाहात्म्यं huge body, दृष्टवा seeing, अयम् this, कुम्भकर्णः Kumbhakarna, उथतितः got up and come, भयार्ताः in fear, परस्परम् one another, संश्रयन्ते sought help.

Meaning

Those Vanaras seeing the huge body thought, "This is Kumbhakarna, who has got up and come'. Out of fear, they sought the help of one another.

YK-71-8Yuddha Kanda 71.8

तेतस्यरूपमालोक्ययथाविष्टोस्त्रिविक्रमे । भयाद्वानरयूधास्तेविद्रवन्तिततस्ततः ।।6.71.8।।

tetasyarūpamālokyayathāviṣṭostrivikrame | bhayādvānarayūdhāstevidravantitatastatḥ ||6.71.8||

Translation

ते they, वानरयूधाः Vanara troops, त्रिविक्रमे Trivikrama form assumed, विष्णोःयथा by Vishnu, तस्य his, रूपम् form, आलोक्य observing, भयात् in panic, ततस्ततः here and there, विद्रवन्ति fled in panic.

Meaning

The Vanara troops, observing his form resembling the Trivikram form assumed by Vishnu, the monkey troops fled here and there in panic.

YK-71-9Yuddha Kanda 71.9

तेऽतिकायंसमासाद्यवानरामूढचेतसः । शरण्यंशरणंजग्मुर्लक्ष्मणाग्रजमाहवे ।।6.71.9।।

te'tikāyṃsamāsādyavānarāmūḍhacetasḥ | śaraṇyṃśaraṇṃjagmurlakṣmaṇāgrajamāhave ||6.71.9||

Translation

तेवानराः those Vanaras, अतिकायम् huge body, समासाद्य reaching, मूढचेतसः deluded, आहवे sought, शरण्यम् refuge, लक्ष्मणाग्रजम् brother of Lakshmana, जग्मुः went.

Meaning

The Vanaras were deluded on reaching the huge body and went to Sri Rama to seek refuge.

YK-71-10Yuddha Kanda 71.10

तोऽतिकायंकाकुत्स्थोरथस्थंपर्वतोपमम् । ददर्शधवनिनंदूराद्गर्जन्तंकालमेघवत् ।।6.71.10।।

to'tikāyṃkākutsthorathasthṃparvatopamam | dadarśadhavaninṃdūrādgarjantṃkālameghavat ||6.71.10||

Translation

ततः then, काकुत्थ्सः Kakutstha, रथस्थम् on the chariot, पर्वतोपमम् looking like mountain, धवनिन wielding bow, कालमेघवत् rumbling like cloud at the time of universal destruction, गर्जन्तम् roaring, अतिकायम् huge body, दूरात् from a distance, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Then Kakutstha saw from a distance form of huge body looking like a mountain, wielding bow, rumbling like a cloud at universal destruction.

YK-71-11Yuddha Kanda 71.11

स तंदृष्टवामहात्मानंराघवस्तुविसिस्मिये । वानरान् सान्त्वयित्वा च विभीषणमुवाच ह ।।6.71.11।।

sa tṃdṛṣṭavāmahātmānṃrāghavastuvisismiye | vānarān sāntvayitvā ca vibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha ||6.71.11||

Translation

सः he, राघवस्तु Raghava, महात्मानं great self, तम् him, दृष्टवा seeing, विसिस्मिये. amazed, वानरान् Vanaras, सान्त्वयित्वा च reassuring, विभीषणम् to Vibheeshana, उवाच ह spoke.

Meaning

Raghava the great, seeing the form of a huge body, was amazed, reassured by the Vanaras, and spoke to Vibheeshana.

YK-71-12Yuddha Kanda 71.12

कोऽसौपर्वतसङ्काशोधनुष्मान्हरिलोचनः । युक्तेहयसहस्रेणविशालेस्यन्दनेस्थितः ।।6.71.12।।

ko'sauparvatasaṅkāśodhanuṣmānharilocanḥ | yuktehayasahasreṇaviśālesyandanesthitḥ ||6.71.12||

Translation

पर्वतसङ्काशः resembling mountain, धनुष्मान् holding a bow, हरिलोचनः yellow eyes, हयसहस्रेण by a thousand horses, युक्ते drawn, विशाले broad, स्यन्दने chariot, स्थितः seated, असौ is, कः who.

Meaning

"Who is he, the yelloweyed, resembling a mountain, seated in the broad chariot drawn by a thousand horses?"

YK-71-13Yuddha Kanda 71.13

य एषनिशितैश्शूलैस्सुतीक्णैःप्रासमुद्गरैः । अर्चिष्मद्भिर्वृतोभातिभूतैरिवमहेश्वरः ।।6.71.13।।

ya eṣaniśitaiśśūlaissutīkṇaiḥprāsamudgaraiḥ | arciṣmadbhirvṛtobhātibhūtairivamaheśvarḥ ||6.71.13||

Translation

यः he who, एषः that way, अर्चिष्मद्भिः in the midst, निशितैः sharp, शूलैः tridents, सुतीक्णैः shining, प्रासमुग्दरैः spears, वृतः surrounded, भूतैः beings, महेश्वरःइव like Maheswara, भाति seems.

Meaning

"Who is he in the midst, with sharp tridents and shining spears, like Maheswara surrounded by beings?"

YK-71-14Yuddha Kanda 71.14

कालजिह्वाप्रकाशाभिर्यएषोऽतिविराजते । आवृतोरथशक्तीभिर्विद्युद्भिरिवतोयदः ।।6.71.14।।

kālajihvāprakāśābhiryaeṣo'tivirājate | āvṛtorathaśaktībhirvidyudbhirivatoyadḥ ||6.71.14||

Translation

यः he who, एषः in that way, कालजिह्वाप्रकाशाभिः gleaming like the tongues of Kala, रथशक्तीभिः with flashes of javelins, आवृतः encircled, विद्युद्भिः lightning, तोयदःइव like a cloud, अतिविराजते shining very bright.

Meaning

"Who is he, gleaming like the tongues of time spirit (Kala spirit), with flashes of javelins, encircled with lightning and looking like a cloud shining very bright?"

YK-71-15Yuddha Kanda 71.15

धनूंषिचास्यसज्जानिहेमपृष्ठानिसर्वशः । शोभयन्तिरथश्रेष्ठंशक्रचापमिवाम्बरम् ।।6.71.15।।

dhanūṃṣicāsyasajjānihemapṛṣṭhānisarvaśḥ | śobhayantirathaśreṣṭhṃśakracāpamivāmbaram ||6.71.15||

Translation

सज्जानि all bows, हेमपृष्ठानि with golden backs, धनूंषि च bows, अस्य his, रथश्रेष्ठम् excellent chariot, शक्रचापम् rainbow, अम्बरम् इव in the sky like, सर्वशः all sides, शोभयन्ति beautiful.

Meaning

"His bows decorated with gold on the back, are like a rainbow in the sky on all sides and makes the chariot excellent."

YK-71-16-17Yuddha Kanda 71.16–17 (युग्मम्)

क एषरक्षश्शार्दूलोरणभूमिविराजयन् । अभ्येतिरथिनांश्रेष्ठोरथेनादित्यतेजसा ।।6.71.16।। ध्वजशृङ्गप्रतिष्ठेनराहुणाभिविराजते । सूर्यरमशिनिभैर्बाणैर्दिशो दश विराजयन् ।।6.71.17।।

ka eṣarakṣaśśārdūloraṇabhūmivirājayan | abhyetirathināṃśreṣṭhorathenādityatejasā ||6.71.16|| dhvajaśṛṅgapratiṣṭhenarāhuṇābhivirājate | sūryaramaśinibhairbāṇairdiśo daśa virājayan ||6.71.17||

Translation

कः he, रक्षश्शार्दूलः tiger among Rakshasas, रथिनाम् on the chariot, श्रेष्ठः foremost, एषः in that way, रणभूमिम् battlefield, विराजयन् illuminating, आदित्यतेजसा like the brightness of the Sun, रथेन on chariot, अभ्येति coming, सूर्यरमशिनभैः resplendent like Sun 's rays, बाणैः by arrows, दश ten, दिशः directions, विराजयन् illuminating, ध्वजशृङ्घप्रतिष्ठेन on top of the pole of the chariot, राहुणा by the Rahu, अभिविराजते very splendid.

Meaning

"The tiger among the Rakshasas seated in the chariot is the foremost car warrior. He is illuminating the battlefield like the brightness of the Sun, resplendent like Sun 's rays. By his arrows he is illuminating the ten directions. The Rahu emblem on top of the pole of the chariot is very splendid."

YK-71-18Yuddha Kanda 71.18

त्रिणतंमेघसन्नादंहेमपृष्ठमलङ्कृतम् । शतक्रतुधनुःप्रख्यंधनुश्चास्यविराजते ।।6.71.18।।

triṇatṃmeghasannādṃhemapṛṣṭhamalaṅkṛtam | śatakratudhanuḥprakhyṃdhanuścāsyavirājate ||6.71.18||

Translation

अस्य his, त्रिणतम् curved in three places, मेघसन्नादम् close to thundering cloud, हेमवृष्ठम् golden, अलङ्कृतम् decorated, धनुः bow, प्रख्यम् casting, विराजते splendour.

Meaning

"His bow with three curves, covered with gold, decorated, is close to a thundering cloud, casting its splendour."

YK-71-19Yuddha Kanda 71.19

स ध्वजस्सपताकश्चसानुकर्षोमहारथः । चतुस्सादिसमायुक्तोमेघस्तनितानि ।।6.71.19।।

sa dhvajassapatākaścasānukarṣomahārathḥ | catussādisamāyuktomeghastanitāni ||6.71.19||

Translation

सध्वजः the standard, सपताकश्च and the flag, सानुकर्षः axletree, मेघस्तनितानि emitting sound like the rumblings of cloud, महारथः great chariot, चतुस्सादिसमायुक्तः driven by four charioteers.

Meaning

"His chariot with standard, flag and axletree is a great one driven by four charioteers emitting sound like the rumblings of clouds."

YK-71-20Yuddha Kanda 71.20

विंशतिर्दशचाष्टौ च तूण्योऽस्यरथमास्थिताः । कार्मुकानि च भीमानिज्याश्चकाञ्चनपिङ्गळाः ।।6.71.20।।

viṃśatirdaśacāṣṭau ca tūṇyo'syarathamāsthitāḥ | kārmukāni ca bhīmānijyāścakāñcanapiṅgaळāḥ ||6.71.20||

Translation

विंशतिः twenty, दश च ten, अष्टौ च eight, तूण्यः quivers, भीमानि frightening, कार्मुकानि च bows, काञ्चनपिङ्गळाः golden coloured, ज्याश्च bowstrings अस्य his, रथम् chariot, आस्थिताः lay arranged.

Meaning

"This chariot has twenty quivers, ten frightening bows, and eight bow strings of golden colour lay arranged in the chariot."

YK-71-21Yuddha Kanda 71.21

द्वौ च खडगौरथगतौपार्श्वस्थौपार्श्वशोभितौ । चतुर्हस्तत्सरुयुतौव्यक्तहस्तदशायतौ ।।6.71.21।।

dvau ca khaḍagaurathagataupārśvasthaupārśvaśobhitau | caturhastatsaruyutauvyaktahastadaśāyatau ||6.71.21||

Translation

पार्श्वस्थौ on the sides, पार्श्वशोभितौ decorating the sides, चतुर्हस्तत्सरुयुतौ measuring four cubits, व्यक्तहस्तदशायतौ ten cubits long, द्वौ two, घडगौ च swords, रथगतौ decorating it.

Meaning

"It has two swords off our cubits and ten cubits long swords provided with hilts hanging on its sides as decoration."

YK-71-22Yuddha Kanda 71.22

रक्तगण्ठगुणोधीरोमहापर्वतसन्निभः । कालःकालमहावक्त्रोमेघस्थइवभास्करः ।।6.71.22।।

raktagaṇṭhaguṇodhīromahāparvatasannibhḥ | kālḥkālamahāvaktromeghasthaivabhāskarḥ ||6.71.22||

Translation

रक्तकण्ठगुणः wearing red garland s around his neck, धीरः brave, महापर्वतसन्निभः as if he is a mountain, कालः death, कालमहावक्त्रः dark with large mouth, मेघस्थः veiled by cloud, भास्करःइव like Sun.

Meaning

"Wearing red garland s round the neck, brave, like a mountain in form, dark with large mouth, like death, like sun veiled by clouds he seems."

YK-71-23Yuddha Kanda 71.23

काञ्चनाङ्गदनद्धाभ्यांभूजाभ्यामेषशोभते । शृङ्गाभ्यामिवतुङ्गाभ्यांहिमवान् पर्वतोत्तमः ।।6.71.23।।

kāñcanāṅgadanaddhābhyāṃbhūjābhyāmeṣaśobhate | śṛṅgābhyāmivatuṅgābhyāṃhimavān parvatottamḥ ||6.71.23||

Translation

काञ्चनाङ्गदनद्धाभ्याम् by adorning golden armlets, भुजाभ्याम् both arms, एषः that way, तुङ्गाभ्याम् high, शृङ्गाभ्याम् peak, पर्वतोत्तमः like a mountain, हिमवान् इव like Himalaya mountain, शोभते shining.

Meaning

"By adorning armlets, his both arms are like high peaks of Himalaya mountain shining away."

YK-71-24Yuddha Kanda 71.24

कुण्डलाभ्यांतुयस्यैतद्भतध्भातिशुभेक्ष । पुनर्वस्वन्तरगतंपूर्णंभिंबमिवैंदवम् ।।6.71.24।।

kuṇḍalābhyāṃtuyasyaitadbhatadhbhātiśubhekṣa | punarvasvantaragatṃpūrṇṃbhiṃbamivaiṃdavam ||6.71.24||

Translation

शुभेक्षणम् auspicious eyes, वक्त्रम् countenance, यस्स्वैतध्बाति whose is shining, कुण्डलाभ्याम् both ear rings, पुनर्वस्वन्तरगतः between Punarvasu stars, पूर्णंबिंबमिवैंदवम् like the full moon.

Meaning

"He who shines like the full moon between two Punarvasu stars, his auspicious eyes and countenance shines with both earrings."

YK-71-25Yuddha Kanda 71.25

आचक्ष्वमेमहाबाहोत्वमेनंराक्षसोत्तमम् । यंदृष्टवावानरास्सर्वेभयार्ताविद्रुतादिशः ।।6.71.25।।

ācakṣvamemahābāhotvamenṃrākṣasottamam | yṃdṛṣṭavāvānarāssarvebhayārtāvidrutādiśḥ ||6.71.25||

Translation

महाबाहो mighty armed one, यं him, दृष्टवा seeing, सर्वे all, वानराः Vanara, भयार्ताः fear, दिशः direction, विद्रुताः fled, एनम् such, राक्षसोत्तमम् foremost of the Rakshasas, त्वम् you, मे to me, आचक्ष्व show him.

Meaning

"Oh! Vibheeshana, a mighty armed one! Show me that foremost of Rakshasas, whom all Vanaras feared and fled in all directions."

YK-71-26Yuddha Kanda 71.26

स पृष्टोराजपुत्रेणरामेणामिततेजसा । आचचक्षेमहातेजारघवायविभीषणः ।।6.71.26।।

sa pṛṣṭorājaputreṇarāmeṇāmitatejasā | ācacakṣemahātejāraghavāyavibhīṣaṇḥ ||6.71.26||

Translation

राजपुत्रेण prince, अमिततेजसा highly brilliant, रामेण by Rama, पृष्टः interrogated, सः he, महातेजाः highly energetic, विभीषणः Vibheeshana, राघवाय to Raghava, आचचक्षे revealed.

Meaning

Interrogated by the highly brilliant prince Raghava, energetic Vibheeshana revealed.

YK-71-27Yuddha Kanda 71.27

दशग्रीवोमहातेजाराजावैश्रवणानुजः । भीमकर्मामहोत्साहोरावणोराक्षसाधिपः ।।6.71.27।।

daśagrīvomahātejārājāvaiśravaṇānujḥ | bhīmakarmāmahotsāhorāvaṇorākṣasādhipḥ ||6.71.27||

Translation

दशग्रीवः tenheaded, महातेजाः highly brilliant, राजा king, वैश्रवणानुजः brother of Vysravana, भीमकर्मा of terrible deeds, महोत्साहः highly exploitative, रावणः Ravana, राक्षसाधिपः king of Rakshasas.

Meaning

"The tenheaded and highly brilliant king Ravana, who is the brother of Vysravana, is of terrible deeds and highly exploitative."

YK-71-28Yuddha Kanda 71.28

तस्यासीद्वीर्यवान्पुत्रोरावणप्रतिमोरणे । वृद्धसेवीश्रुतिधरस्सर्वास्त्रविदुषांवरः ।।6.71.28।।

tasyāsīdvīryavānputrorāvaṇapratimoraṇe | vṛddhasevīśrutidharassarvāstraviduṣāṃvarḥ ||6.71.28||

Translation

तस्य to him, वीर्यवान् valiant, रणे in war, रावणप्रतिमः compeer of Ravana, वृद्धसेवी served elders, श्रुतिधरः learned, सर्वास्त्रविदुषाम् well versed in all sastras, वरः blessed, पुत्रः son, आसीत् born.

Meaning

"To him was born a blessed son, valiant one, compeer of Ravana, who served elders, learned and well versed in sastras."

YK-71-29Yuddha Kanda 71.29

अश्वपृष्ठेरथेनागेखडगेधनुषिकर्षणे । भेदेसान्त्वे च दाने च नयेमन्त्रे च सम्मतः ।।6.71.29।।

aśvapṛṣṭherathenāgekhaḍagedhanuṣikarṣaṇe | bhedesāntve ca dāne ca nayemantre ca sammatḥ ||6.71.29||

Translation

अश्वपृष्ठे best in riding on horseback, नागेरथे on elephant, खडगे in the use of sword, सान्त्वे च and bow also, भेदे sowing dissension, दाने च in making charity, नये in making peace, मन्त्रे च in statecraft, सम्मतः capable.

Meaning

"He is best in riding on horseback, on elephant back and in the use of sword and bow. He is capable of sowing dissension, making peace, giving charity and statecraft."

YK-71-30Yuddha Kanda 71.30

यस्यबाहूसमाश्रित्यलङ्कावसतिनिर्भया । तनयंधान्यमालिन्याअतिकायमिमंविदुः ।।6.71.30।।

yasyabāhūsamāśrityalaṅkāvasatinirbhayā | tanayṃdhānyamālinyāatikāyamimṃviduḥ ||6.71.30||

Translation

यस्य his, बाहुम् shoulders, समाश्रित्य seeking refuge, लङ्का Lanka, निर्भया fearless, वसति remains, इमम् he is, धान्यमालिन्याः Dhanyamalini's, तनयम् son, अतिकायम् Atikaya, विदुः you may know.

Meaning

"He is known as Atikaya, son of Dhanyamalini. Lanka remains fearless on his shoulders, you may know."

YK-71-31Yuddha Kanda 71.31

एतेनाराधितोब्रह्मोतपसाभावितात्मना । अस्त्राणिचाप्यवाप्तानिरिपवश्चपराजिताः ।।6.71.31।।

etenārādhitobrahmotapasābhāvitātmanā | astrāṇicāpyavāptāniripavaścaparājitāḥ ||6.71.31||

Translation

तपसा by penance, भावितात्मना of supreme intellect, एतेन by him, ब्रह्मा Brahma, आराधितः propitiated, अस्त्राणि च mystic missiles, अवाप्तानि presented, रिपवश्च enemies, पराजिताः defeated.

Meaning

"By penance on supreme self he propitiated Brahma, who blessed him with mystic missiles by way of boons by which his enemies were subdued."

YK-71-32Yuddha Kanda 71.32

सुरासुरैरवध्यत्वंदत्तमस्मैस्वयम्भुवा । एतच्चकवचंदिव्यंरधश्चैषोऽरभास्वरः ।।6.71.32।।

surāsurairavadhyatvṃdattamasmaisvayambhuvā | etaccakavacṃdivyṃradhaścaiṣo'rabhāsvarḥ ||6.71.32||

Translation

स्वयम्भूव selfborn, अस्मै to him, सुरासुरैः gods and demons, अवध्यत्वम् exemption from death, दत्तम् was given, एतत् all this, दिव्यम् wonderful, कवचं च shield, रभास्वरः bright as the Sun, रथश्च chariot.

Meaning

"Exemption from death from gods and demons was given to him and all this wonderful shield and chariot as bright as the sun."

YK-71-33Yuddha Kanda 71.33

एतेनशतशोदेवादानवाश्चपराजिताः । रक्षितानि च रक्षांसियक्षाश्चापिनिषूदिताः ।।6.71.33।।

etenaśataśodevādānavāścaparājitāḥ | rakṣitāni ca rakṣāṃsiyakṣāścāpiniṣūditāḥ ||6.71.33||

Translation

एतेन by this, शतशः hundreds, देवाः Devatas, दानवाश्च Danavas also, पराजिताः defeated, यक्षाश्चा , Yakshas, रक्षितानि च protected,, रक्षांसि Rakshasas, निषूदिताः killed.

Meaning

"By this (boon) hundreds of Devatas and demons were defeated by him, Yakshas were killed, nay Rakshasas were protected."

YK-71-34-35Yuddha Kanda 71.34–35 (युग्मम्)

वज्रंविष्टम्भितंयेनबाणैरिन्द्रस्यधीमतः । पाशस्सलिलराजस्यरणेप्रतिहतस्तथा ।।6.71.34।। एषोऽतिकायोबलवान्राक्षसानामथर्षभः । रावणस्यतोधीमान्देवदानवदर्पहा ।।6.71.35।।

vajrṃviṣṭambhitṃyenabāṇairindrasyadhīmatḥ | pāśassalilarājasyaraṇepratihatastathā ||6.71.34|| eṣo'tikāyobalavānrākṣasānāmatharṣabhḥ | rāvaṇasyatodhīmāndevadānavadarpahā ||6.71.35||

Translation

येन by him, रणे in battle, बाणैः arrows, धीमतः wise, इन्द्रस्य Indra's, वज्रम् thunderbolt, विष्टम्भितम् obstructed firmly, तथा likewise, सलिलराजस्य Varuna's, पाशः noose, प्रतिहतः repelled, एषः in that way, अतिकायः Atikaya, बलवान् strong, अथ now, राक्षसानाम् Rakshasas, र्षभः bull यः he who, धीमान् wise, रावणसुतः Ravana's son, देवदानवदर्पहा subduer of the pride of Devas and Danavas.

Meaning

"Here is strong Atikaya, a wise son of Ravana, bull among Rakshasas, who is a subduer of the pride of Devas and Danavas, by whom thunderbolt of Indra was obstructed firmly in battle and likewise the noose of Varuna was repelled in war."

YK-71-36Yuddha Kanda 71.36

तदस्मिन्क्रियतांयत्नःक्षिप्रंपुरुषपुंगव । पुरावानरसैन्यानिक्ष्यंनयतिसायकैः ।।6.71.36।।

tadasminkriyatāṃyatnḥkṣiprṃpuruṣapuṃgava | purāvānarasainyānikṣyṃnayatisāyakaiḥ ||6.71.36||

Translation

पुरुषपुङ्गव best of men, तत् therefore, अस्मिन् his, क्षिप्रम् quickly, यत्नः efforts, क्रियताम् be exhibited, वानरसैन्यानि Vanara army, सायकैः by arrows, क्षयंपुरानयति before he puts an end.

Meaning

"Oh, best of men! Quickly make efforts to put an end to him before he puts down Vanara army."

YK-71-37Yuddha Kanda 71.37

ततोतिकायोबलवान्प्रविश्यहरिवाहिनीम् । विष्फारयामासधनुर्ननाद च पुनःपुनः ।।6.71.37।।

tatotikāyobalavānpraviśyaharivāhinīm | viṣphārayāmāsadhanurnanāda ca punḥpunḥ ||6.71.37||

Translation

ततः thereafter, बलवान् mighty, अतिकायः Atikaya, हरिवाहिनीम् monkey army, प्रविश्य entered, धनुः bow, विस्फारयामास twanged, पुनःपुनः again and again, ननाद च made loud noise.

Meaning

Thereafter, mighty Atikaya entered the monkey army, twanged his bow again and again and made a loud noise.

YK-71-38Yuddha Kanda 71.38

तंभीमवपुषंदृष्टवारथस्थंरथिनांवरम् । अभिपेतुर्महात्मानोयेप्रधानावनौकसः ।।6.71.38।।

tṃbhīmavapuṣṃdṛṣṭavārathasthṃrathināṃvaram | abhipeturmahātmānoyepradhānāvanaukasḥ ||6.71.38||

Translation

अथस्थम् seated, रथिनाम् on the chariot, परम् supreme, भीमवपुषम् dreadful enemy, तम् him, दृष्टवा observing, प्रधानाः foremost, महात्मानः great, ये those, वनौकसः Vanaras, अभिपेतुः rushed towards him.

Meaning

Observing the dreadful enemy seated on the chariot, the foremost of the great Vanaras rushed towards him.

YK-71-39Yuddha Kanda 71.39

कुमुदोद्विविदोमैन्दोनीलश्शरभएव च । पादपैर्गिरिशृङ्गैश्चयुगपत्समभिद्रवन् ।।6.71.39।।

kumudodvividomaindonīlaśśarabhaeva ca | pādapairgiriśṛṅgaiścayugapatsamabhidravan ||6.71.39||

Translation

कुमुदः Kumuda, द्विविदः Dwivida, मैन्दः Mainda, नीलः Neela, शरभःएव च even Sarabha, पादपैः with trees, गिरिशृङ्गैःच and mountain peaks, युगपत् assailed समभिद्रवन् all at once.

Meaning

Kumuda, Dwivida, Mainda, Neela, even Sarabha, all at once assailed him with trees and mountain peaks.

YK-71-40Yuddha Kanda 71.40

तेषांवृक्षांश्चशैलांश्चशरैःकाञ्चनभूषणैः । अतिकायोमहातेजाश्चिच्छेदास्त्रविदांवरः ।।6.71.40।।

teṣāṃvṛkṣāṃścaśailāṃścaśaraiḥkāñcanabhūṣaṇaiḥ | atikāyomahātejāścicchedāstravidāṃvarḥ ||6.71.40||

Translation

महातेजाः endowed with extraordinary energy, अस्त्रविदाम् efficient in use of weapons, वरः foremost, अतिकायः Atikaya, काञ्चनभूषणैः adorned with gold, शरैः arrows, तेषाम् by that, वृक्षान्च trees, शैलान् च and rocks, चिच्छेद shattered.

Meaning

Atikaya, endowed with extraordinary energy, efficient in the use of weapons, shattered the trees and rocks hurled by the Vanaras with his arrows adorned with gold.

YK-71-41Yuddha Kanda 71.41

तांश्चैवसर्वान् स हरीन् शरैस्सर्वायसैर्बली । विव्याथाभिमुखस्सङ्ख्येभीमकायोनिशाचर ।।6.71.41।।

tāṃścaivasarvān sa harīn śaraissarvāyasairbalī | vivyāthābhimukhassaṅkhyebhīmakāyoniśācara ||6.71.41||

Translation

बली powerful, भीमकायः of terrible form, निशाचर night anger, सङ्ख्ये in the battlefield, अभिमुखान् facing, तान् them, सर्वान् all, हरीन् monkeys, सर्वायसैः iron, शरैः arrows, विव्याध pierced.

Meaning

The powerful night ranger of terrible form, pierced all monkeys who were facing him in the battlefield with iron arrows.

YK-71-42Yuddha Kanda 71.42

तेऽर्दितांबाणवर्षेणभिन्नगात्राःप्लवङ्गमाः । न शेकुरतिकायस्यप्रतिकर्तुंमहारणे ।।6.71.42।।

te'rditāṃbāṇavarṣeṇabhinnagātrāḥplavaṅgamāḥ | na śekuratikāyasyapratikartuṃmahāraṇe ||6.71.42||

Translation

महारणे great war, अतिकायस्य Atikaya's, बाणवर्णेण by a hail of arrows, अर्दिताः hard pressed, भिन्नगात्राः limbs broken, ते they, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, प्रतिकर्तुम् to resist, न शेकुः not possible.

Meaning

The monkeys were hard pressed by Atikaya's hail of arrows. Their limbs broke and were unable to resist.

YK-71-43Yuddha Kanda 71.43

तत् त्सैन्यंहरिवीराणांत्रासयामासराक्षसः । मृगयूथमिवक्रुद्धोहरिर्यौवनदर्पितः ।।6.71.43।।

tat tsainyṃharivīrāṇāṃtrāsayāmāsarākṣasḥ | mṛgayūthamivakruddhohariryauvanadarpitḥ ||6.71.43||

Translation

यौवनदर्पितः lion with youthful pride, राक्षसः Rakshasa, क्रुद्धः enraged, हरिः monkey, मृगयूथमिव group of deer, हरिवीराणाम् monkey heroes, तत् that, सैन्यम् army, त्रासयामास struck.

Meaning

Just as a young lion with youthful pride would strike a group of deer, the enraged Rakshasa struck the army of monkey heroes.

YK-71-44Yuddha Kanda 71.44

सराक्षसेन्द्रोहरिसैन्यमध्येनायुध्यमानंनिजघानकञ्चित् । उपेत्यरामंसधम: कलापी स गर्वितंवाक्यमिदंबभाषे ।।6.71.44।।

sarākṣasendroharisainyamadhyenāyudhyamānṃnijaghānakañcit | upetyarāmṃsadhama: kalāpī sa garvitṃvākyamidṃbabhāṣe ||6.71.44||

Translation

सः he, राक्षसेन्द्रः Rakshasa Lord, हरिसैन्यमध्ये in the midst of monkey army, अयुध्यमानम् wielding weapon, कञ्चित् indeed, निजाघान not strike, सधम: कलापी armed with bow and quiver, सः he, उपेत्य taking, रामम् Rama, गर्वितम् with pride, इदम् this, वाक्यम् words, बभाषे spoke.

Meaning

The Rakshasa lord, wielding a weapon in the midst of the monkey army, indeed did not strike any, but armed with bow and quiver went with pride towards Rama and spoke.

YK-71-45Yuddha Kanda 71.45

रथेस्थितोहंशरचापपाणिर्नप्राकृतंकञ्चनयोधयामि । यस्यास्तिकश्चिद्व्यवसाययुक्तोददातुमेक्षिप्रमिहाद्ययुद्धम् ।।6.71.45।।

rathesthitohṃśaracāpapāṇirnaprākṛtṃkañcanayodhayāmi | yasyāstikaścidvyavasāyayuktodadātumekṣipramihādyayuddham ||6.71.45||

Translation

अहम् I, शरचापपाणिः with bow and arrow, रथे chariot, स्थितः seated, प्राकृतम् common warrior, कञ्चन indeed, नयोधयामि not give war, यस्य to him कश्चित् indeed, अस्ति now, व्यवसाययुक्तः whoever is interested, अद्य now इह here, क्षिप्रम् speedily, मे to me, युद्धम् fight, ददातु give me.

Meaning

"I am with a bow and arrow seated in the chariot. Indeed, I am not strong in fighting with common warriors. Whoever is interested to fight now can come speedily to fight with me."

YK-71-46Yuddha Kanda 71.46

तत्तस्यवाक्यंब्रुवतोनिशम्यचुकोपसौमित्रिरमित्रहन्ता । अमृष्यमाणश्चसमुत्पपातजग्राहचापं च ततस्स्मयित्वा ।।6.71.46।।

tattasyavākyṃbruvatoniśamyacukopasaumitriramitrahantā | amṛṣyamāṇaścasamutpapātajagrāhacāpṃ ca tatassmayitvā ||6.71.46||

Translation

ब्रुवतः having spoken, तस्य his, वाक्यम् that word, निशम्य hearing, अमित्रहन्ता destroyer of enemies, सौमित्रिः Saumithri, चुकोप in anger, ततः then, स्मयित्वा not enduring, अमृष्यमाणः not able to tolerate, समुत्पपात went towards, चापम् sword, जग्राह took up.

Meaning

On hearing Atikaya, Saumithri the destroyer of enemies, became angry, not enduring and not able to tolerate went towards him taking a sword.

YK-71-47Yuddha Kanda 71.47

क्रुद्धस्सौमित्रिरुत्पत्यतूणादाक्षिप्यसायकम् । पुरस्तादतिकायस्यविचकर्षमहद्धनुः ।।6.71.47।।

kruddhassaumitrirutpatyatūṇādākṣipyasāyakam | purastādatikāyasyavicakarṣamahaddhanuḥ ||6.71.47||

Translation

क्रुद्धः furious. सौमित्रिः Saumithri, उत्पत्य springing up, तूणात् from quiver, सायकम् arrow, आक्षिप्य stretching, अतिकायस्य full length, पुरस्तात् before, महत् great, धनुः bow, चकर्ष discharged.

Meaning

Furious Saumithri, springing up, took up his arrow from the quiver, stretching to full length before he discharged the arrow.

YK-71-48Yuddha Kanda 71.48

पूरयन् स महींशैलानाकाशंसागरंदिशः । ज्याशब्दोलक्ष्मणस्योग्रस्त्रासयन् रजनीचरान् ।।6.71.48।।

pūrayan sa mahīṃśailānākāśṃsāgarṃdiśḥ | jyāśabdolakṣmaṇasyograstrāsayan rajanīcarān ||6.71.48||

Translation

लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, सः that, ज्याशब्दः sound of twang, शैलान् mountains, महीम् earth, आकाशम् sky, सागरम् ocean, दिशः directions, पूरयन् filled, रजनीचरान् night ranger, त्रासयन् terror, उग्रः terrible.

Meaning

The twang of Lakshmana filled the mountains, earth, ocean, and all directions striking terrible fear in the night ranger.

YK-71-49Yuddha Kanda 71.49

सौमित्रेश्चापनिर्घोषंश्रुत्वाप्रतिभयंतदा । विसिष्मियेमहातेजाराक्षसेन्द्रात्मजोबली ।।6.71.49।।

saumitreścāpanirghoṣṃśrutvāpratibhayṃtadā | visiṣmiyemahātejārākṣasendrātmajobalī ||6.71.49||

Translation

तदा then, बली powerful, महातेजाः extraordinary energetic, राक्षसेन्द्रात्मजः Rakshasa king's son, प्रतिभयम् in turn frightened, सौमित्रेः Saumithri's, चापनिर्घोषम् sound of his bow, श्रुत्वा hearing, विसिष्मिये astonished.

Meaning

Then the extraordinarily energetic and powerful son of Rakshasa king was in turn frightened at the sound of Saumithri's bow and was astonished.

YK-71-50Yuddha Kanda 71.50

अथातिकायःकुपितोदृष्टवालक्ष्मणमुत्थितम् । आदायनिशितंबाणमिदंवचनमब्रवीत् ।।6.71.50।।

athātikāyḥkupitodṛṣṭavālakṣmaṇamutthitam | ādāyaniśitṃbāṇamidṃvacanamabravīt ||6.71.50||

Translation

अथा and then, उत्थितम् sprang up, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, दृष्टवा seeing, अतिकायः Atikaya, कुपितः angry, निशितम् sharp, बाणम् shaft, आदाय taking, इदंवचनम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Seeing Atikaya, furious Lakshmana sprang up and took a sharp shaft and spoke as follows.

YK-71-51Yuddha Kanda 71.51

बालस्त्वमसिसौमित्रेविक्रमेष्वविचक्षणः । गच्छकिंकालसदृशंमांयोधयतुमिच्छसि ।।6.71.51।।

bālastvamasisaumitrevikrameṣvavicakṣaṇḥ | gacchakiṃkālasadṛśṃmāṃyodhayatumicchasi ||6.71.51||

Translation

सौमित्रे O! Saumithri, त्वम् you, विक्रमेषु are valiant, अविचक्षणः not discriminative, असि are, बालः young, कालसदृशम् equal to death, माम् I am, योधयितुम् to combat with, किम् why, इच्छसि do you desire.

Meaning

"O Saumithri! You are valiant but young, not able to discriminate. I am equal to the Lord of death. Why do you desire to comb at with me?"

YK-71-52Yuddha Kanda 71.52

न हिमद्बाहुसृष्टानामस्त्राणाहिमवानपि । सोढुमुत्सहतेवेगमन्तरिक्षमथोमही ।।6.71.52।।

na himadbāhusṛṣṭānāmastrāṇāhimavānapi | soḍhumutsahatevegamantarikṣamathomahī ||6.71.52||

Translation

मद्बाहुसृष्टानाम् discharged by my arm, आस्त्राणाम् shafts, वेगम् speed, हिमनानपि even Himalayas, सोढुम् force, न उत्सहतेहि not able to bear, अन्तरिक्षम् sky, अथो on the other hand, मही earth.

Meaning

The shafts discharged from my arm can't be borne, by the Himalayas, even the atmosphere between the sky and earth can't bear the force.

YK-71-53Yuddha Kanda 71.53

सुखप्रसुप्तंकालाग्निंविबोधयितुमिच्छसि । न्यस्यचापंनिवर्तस्वमाप्राणान् जहिमद्गतः ।।6.71.53।।

sukhaprasuptṃkālāgniṃvibodhayitumicchasi | nyasyacāpṃnivartasvamāprāṇān jahimadgatḥ ||6.71.53||

Translation

सुखप्रसुप्तम् sleeping comfortably, कालाग्निम् fire of dissolution, विबोधयितुम् why do you arouse, इच्छसि desire, चापम् bow, न्यस्य casting away, निवर्तस्व return back, मद्गतः confronting me प्राणान् life, माजहि go away.

Meaning

"Why do you want to arouse the fire of dissolution sleeping comfortably? Return, casting away your bow, without confronting. Go away."

YK-71-54Yuddha Kanda 71.54

अथवात्वंप्रतिष्टब्धो न निवर्तितुमिच्छसि । तिष्ठप्राणान् परित्यज्यगमिष्यसियमक्ष्यम् ।।6.71.54।।

athavātvṃpratiṣṭabdho na nivartitumicchasi | tiṣṭhaprāṇān parityajyagamiṣyasiyamakṣyam ||6.71.54||

Translation

अथवा or else, त्वम् you, प्रतिष्टब्धः you want to oppose, निवर्तितुम् to return, न इच्छसि not wish, तिष्ठ stay, प्राणान् life, परित्यज्य giving up, यमक्ष्यम् Yama's abode, गमिष्यसि proceed.

Meaning

"Or else if you want to oppose and not return, give up your life and proceed to Yama's abode."

YK-71-55Yuddha Kanda 71.55

पश्यमेनिशितान्बाणानरिदर्पनिषूदनान् । ईश्वरायुधसङ्काशांस्तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणान् ।।6.71.55।।

paśyameniśitānbāṇānaridarpaniṣūdanān | īśvarāyudhasaṅkāśāṃstaptakāñcanabhūṣaṇān ||6.71.55||

Translation

मे my, नरिदर्पनिषूदनान् capable of reducing the ride of enemy, ईश्वरायुधसङ्काशान् like the Ishwara's trident, तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणान् ornamented with polished gold, निशितान् sharp, बाणान् shafts, पश्य see.

Meaning

"See my sharp shafts capable of reducing enemy's pride like Ishwara's trident, ornamented with polished gold."

YK-71-56Yuddha Kanda 71.56

एषतेसर्पसंकाशोबाणःपास्यतिशोणितम् । मृगराजइवक्रुद्धोनागराजस्यशोणितम् ।।6.71.56।। इत्येवमुक्त्वासंक्रुद्धश्शरंधनुषिसंदधे ।

eṣatesarpasṃkāśobāṇḥpāsyatiśoṇitam | mṛgarājaivakruddhonāgarājasyaśoṇitam ||6.71.56|| ityevamuktvāsṃkruddhaśśarṃdhanuṣisṃdadhe |

Translation

सर्पसंकाशः like serpents, एषःबाणाः these arrows, क्रुद्धः angry, मृगराजः lion, नागराजस्य elephant's, शोणितम् blood, ते to you, शोणितम् blood, पास्यति drink, इत्येवम् therefore, उक्त्वा told, संक्रुद्धः furious, शरम् arrow, धनुषि bow, संदधे fixed.

Meaning

"These arrows are like serpents and can drink your blood just as an angry lion drinks the blood of elephants. Therefore, I tell you", said Atikaya to Lakshmana."

YK-71-57Yuddha Kanda 71.57

श्रुत्वातिकायस्यवचस्सरोषंसगर्वितंसम्यतिराजपुत्रः । स सञ्चुकोपातिबलोमनस्वीरुवाचवाक्यं च ततोमहार्थम् ।।6.71.57।।

śrutvātikāyasyavacassaroṣṃsagarvitṃsamyatirājaputrḥ | sa sañcukopātibalomanasvīruvācavākyṃ ca tatomahārtham ||6.71.57||

Translation

राजपुत्रः prince, सम्यति fitted, अतिकायस्य Atikaya, सरोषम् in wrath, सगर्वितम् proud, वचः utterance, श्रुत्वा hearing, सञ्चुकोप enraged, अतिबलः very strong, मनस्वी high minded, महार्थम् great meaning, सः he, ततः those, वाक्यम् words, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

Prince Atikaya, having spoken as said before, fitted his bow in wrath. Hearing the proud statement of Atikaya, the highminded Lakshmana, endowed with strength, enraged, and spoke these words of great meaning.

YK-71-58Yuddha Kanda 71.58

न वाक्यमात्रेणभवान् प्रधानो न कत्थनात्सत्पुरुषाभवन्ति । मयिस्थितेधन्विनिबाणपाणौनिदर्शयस्वात्मबलंदुरात्मन् ।।6.71.58।।

na vākyamātreṇabhavān pradhāno na katthanātsatpuruṣābhavanti | mayisthitedhanvinibāṇapāṇaunidarśayasvātmabalṃdurātman ||6.71.58||

Translation

दुरात्मन् evil minded, भवान् you are, वाक्यमात्रेण by mere statement, प्रधानः chief, न not, कत्थनात् speech, सत्पुरुषाः good people, न भवन्ति not do, धन्विनि bow, बाणपाणौ armed with a bow, स्थिते stand, मयि my, आत्मबलम् your strength, निदर्शयस्य prove.

Meaning

"You are evil minded. By mere statement you people can't become good chiefs. I stand armed with a bow and arrow. Prove your strength."

YK-71-59Yuddha Kanda 71.59

कर्मणासूचयात्मानं न विकत्थितुमर्हसि । पौरुषेणतुयोयुक्तस्सतुशूरइतिस्मृतः ।।6.71.59।।

karmaṇāsūcayātmānṃ na vikatthitumarhasi | pauruṣeṇatuyoyuktassatuśūraitismṛtḥ ||6.71.59||

Translation

कर्मणा by action, आत्मानम् yourself, सूचय indicated, विकत्थितुम् reveal, न अर्हसि not deserve, यः he who, पौरुषेण with prowess, युक्तः right, सः he, शूरःइति is a hero, स्मृतः are known as.

Meaning

"Reveal yourself by action not by indication. You do not deserve it. He who is with prowess is a right hero."

YK-71-60Yuddha Kanda 71.60

सर्वायुधसमायुक्तोधन्वीत्वंरथमास्थितः । शरैर्वायदिवाप्यस्त्रैर्दर्शयस्वपराक्रमम् ।।6.71.60।।

sarvāyudhasamāyuktodhanvītvṃrathamāsthitḥ | śarairvāyadivāpyastrairdarśayasvaparākramam ||6.71.60||

Translation

त्वम् you, धन्वी bow, सर्वायुधसमायुक्तः collecting all kinds of weapons, रथम् chariot, आस्थितः seated, शरैःवा with arrows, यदिवापि by that alone, अस्त्रै: weapons, पराक्रमम् capable, दर्शयस्य show.

Meaning

"You are seated in the chariot with all kinds of weapons collected. By that alone you do not become capable. Show your capacity."

YK-71-61Yuddha Kanda 71.61

ततश्शिरस्तेनिशितैःपातयिष्याम्यहंशरैः । मारुतःकालसम्पक्वंवृन्तात्ताळफलंयथा ।।6.71.61।।

Translation

ततः then, अहम् I, निशितैः sharp, शरैः arrows, तेशिरः his head, मारुतः wind, कालसम्पक्वम् in the process of time when ripened, ताळफलम् palm fruit, वृन्तात् यथा drops, पातयिष्यामि will throw.

Meaning

"Then I will strike down his head with sharp arrows and throw him just as ripened palm fruit drops in the process of time."

YK-71-62Yuddha Kanda 71.62

अद्यतेमामकाबाणास्तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणाः । पास्यन्तिरुधिरंगात्राद्बाणशल्यान्तरोत्थितम् ।।6.71.62।।

adyatemāmakābāṇāstaptakāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ | pāsyantirudhirṃgātrādbāṇaśalyāntarotthitam ||6.71.62||

Translation

अद्य now, तप्तकाञ्चनभूषणाः decked with polished gold, मामकाः my बाणाः arrows, तेगात्रात् from your neck, बाणशल्यान्तरोत्थितम् by the holes made by pointed arrows, रुधिरम् blood, पास्यन्ति will drink.

Meaning

"Now, you will drink the blood ejected from your neck by the holes made with my pointed arrows decked with polished gold."

YK-71-63Yuddha Kanda 71.63

बालोऽयमितिविज्ञाय न मावज्ञातुमर्हसि । बालोवायदिवावृद्धोमृत्युंजानीहिसंयुगे ।।6.71.63।। बालेनविष्णुनालोकास्त्रयःक्रान्तास्त्रिविक्रमैः ।

Translation

अयम् this, बालः young, इति thus, विज्ञाय victory, अवज्ञातुम् underestimate, न च अर्हसि not know, बालोवा being young, वृद्धोवा or old, संयुगे in battle, मृत्युम् death, जानीहि not know, बालेन by being young, विष्णुवा Vishnu, त्रिविक्रमैः Trivikrama, त्रयः three, लोकाः worlds, क्रान्ताः going.

Meaning

"You should not underestimate me thinking I am young or old to win. You do not know that I am spirit of death in battle. Did not Vishnu as young Trivikrama win the three worlds going by three strides?"

YK-71-64Yuddha Kanda 71.64

लक्ष्मणस्यवचश्श्रुत्वाहेतुमत्परमार्थवत् ।।6.71.64।। अतिकायःप्रचुक्रोधबाणंचोत्तममाददे ।

lakṣmaṇasyavacaśśrutvāhetumatparamārthavat ||6.71.64|| atikāyḥpracukrodhabāṇṃcottamamādade |

Translation

लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, हेतुमत् reasoning, परमार्थवत् full of truth, वचः words, श्रुत्वा hearing, अतिकायः Atikaya, प्रचुक्रोध very furious, उत्तमम् best of, बाणम् arrows, आददे च took.

Meaning

On hearing the words of Lakshmana, which was reasonable and full of truth, Atikaya became furious and took up the best of arrows.

YK-71-65Yuddha Kanda 71.65

ततोविद्याधराभूतादेवादैत्यामहर्षयः ।।6.71.65।। गुह्यकाश्चमहात्मानस्तद्युद्धंद्रष्टुमागमन् ।

tatovidyādharābhūtādevādaityāmaharṣayḥ ||6.71.65|| guhyakāścamahātmānastadyuddhṃdraṣṭumāgaman |

Translation

ततः then, विद्याधराः Vidhyadhara, भूताः Demons, देवाः Devas, दैत्याः Daityas, महर्षयः Sages, महात्मानः great people, गुह्यकाः च Guhyakas, तदा then, तत् there, युद्धम् battlefield, द्रष्टुमागमन् arrived to witness.

Meaning

Then vidhyadharas, demons, devatas, daityas, sages and great guhyakas arrived at the battlefield to witness.

तोऽतिकायःकुपितश्चापमारोप्यसायकम् ।।6.71.66।। लक्ष्मणायप्रचिक्षेपसङ्क्षिपन्निवचाम्बरम् ।

Then enraged Atikaya, fixing his arrow to the bow as if discharging it in the sky directed at Lakshmana.

परवीरहा heroic destroyer of enemies, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, आपतन्तम् coming towards, आशीविषोपमम् venomous serpent like arrow, निशितम् sharp, तंशरम् that arrow, अर्धचन्द्रेण half moon shaped, चिच्छेद shattered.

Meaning

Lakshmana, the heroic destroyer of enemies, shattered the venomous serpent like arrow with his sharp half moon shaped arrow.

YK-71-68Yuddha Kanda 71.68

तंनिकृत्तंशरंदृष्टवाकृत्तभोगमिवोरगम् ।।6.71.68।। अतिकायोभृशंक्रुद्धःपञ्चबाणान् समाददे ।

Translation

अतिकायः Atikaya, कृत्तभोगम् torn asunder, उरगम् इव like serpent, निकृत्तम् offended, तंशरम् that arrow, दृष्टवा seeing, भृशम् , क्रुद्धः angry, पञ्च five, बाणान् arrows, समाददे fitted.

Meaning

Seeing the arrow torn asunder like a serpent, Atikaya was offended and became very angry and fitted five arrows to his bow.

YK-71-69Yuddha Kanda 71.69

तान्शरान् सम्प्रचिक्षेपलक्ष्मणायनिशाचरः ।।6.71.69।। तानप्राप्तान् शरैस्तीक्ष्णैश्चिच्छेदभरतानुजः ।

tānśarān sampracikṣepalakṣmaṇāyaniśācarḥ ||6.71.69|| tānaprāptān śaraistīkṣṇaiścicchedabharatānujḥ |

Translation

निशाचरः night ranger, तान् शरान् those arrows, लक्ष्मणाय at Lakshmana, सम्प्रचिक्षेप loosed with force, भरतानुजः Bharata's brother, तान् them, अप्राप्तान् before reaching, शरैः arrows, तीक्ष्णैः sharp, चिच्छेद shattered.

Meaning

The night ranger set loose those arrows at Lakshmana, Bharata's brother. Lakshmana shattered them even before it reached him.

YK-71-70Yuddha Kanda 71.70

सतान् छित्त्वाशितैर्बाणैर्लक्ष्मणःपरवीरहा ।।6.71.70।। आददेनिशितंबाणंज्वलन्तमिवतेजसा ।

Translation

परवीरहा heroic destroyer of foes, सःलक्ष्मणः that Lakshmana, तान् them, शितैः sharp, बाणैः arrows, छित्त्वा split, तेजसा bright, ज्वलन्तमि flaming, निशितम् sharp, बाणम् arrow, आददे seized.

Meaning

Lakshmana, the heroic destroyer of foes, having split those arrows, seized a shaft which was a bright and sharp flaming arrow.

तमादायधनुश्श्रेष्ठेयोजयामासलक्ष्मणः ।।6.71.71।। विचकर्ष च वेगेनविससर्ज च वीर्यवान् ।

Translation

लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, वीर्यवान् valiant, धनुश्श्रेष्ठे foremost of the wielders of bow, योजयामास stretching, वेगेन quickly, विचकर्ष च till the ear, विससर्ज च discharged.

Meaning

Valiant Lakshmana, foremost of the wielders of bow stretching his bow till the ear, quickly discharged the arrow.

YK-71-72Yuddha Kanda 71.72

पूर्णायतविसृषेनशरेणनतपर्वणा ।।6.71.72।। ललाटेराक्षसश्रेष्ठमाजघान स वीर्यवान् ।

pūrṇāyatavisṛṣenaśareṇanataparvaṇā ||6.71.72|| lalāṭerākṣasaśreṣṭhamājaghāna sa vīryavān |

Translation

वीर्यवान heroic, सः he, पूर्णायतविसृषेन fully stretching, नतपर्वणा bending to curvature, शरेण the arrow, राक्षसश्रेष्ठम् foremost of the Rakshasas, ललाटे forehead, आजघान struck.

Meaning

The heroic Lakshmana fully stretching the arrow bending to curvature struck Atikaya, the foremost of Rakshasas on his forehead.

सललाटेशरोमग्नस्तस्यभीमस्यरक्षसः ।।6.71.73।। ददृशेशोणितेनाक्तःपन्नगेन्द्रइवाचले ।

Translation

भीमस्य terrific, तस्यरक्षसः that Rakshasa, ललाटे forehead, मग्नः stuck on top, अक्तः said, सः he, शरः arrow, अचले mountain, पन्नगेन्द्रःइव like serpent, ददृशे seemed.

Meaning

That arrow stuck on the forehead of the terrific Rakshasa looked like a serpent on a mountain.

YK-71-74Yuddha Kanda 71.74

राक्षसःप्रचकम्पे च लक्ष्मणेषुप्रपीडितः ।।6.71.74।। रुद्रबाणहतंघोरंयथात्रिपुरगोपुरम् ।

rākṣasḥpracakampe ca lakṣmaṇeṣuprapīḍitḥ ||6.71.74|| rudrabāṇahatṃghorṃyathātripuragopuram |

Translation

अथ now, लक्ष्मणेषुप्रपीडितः tormented by Lakshmana's arrow, राक्षसः Rakshasa, रुद्रबाणहतम् as though struck by arrow of Rudra, घोरम् dreadful, त्रिपुरगोपुरंयथा like the gate of Tripura, प्रचकम्पे shaken.

Meaning

Now tormented by Lakshmana's arrow the Rakshasa was shaken dreadfully like the gate of Tripura (the city built of gold, silver, and iron in heaven, in space and earth by Maya and burnt by Rudra).

YK-71-75Yuddha Kanda 71.75

चिन्तयामासचाश्वास्यविमृश्य च महाबलः ।।6.71.75।। साधुबाणनिपातेनश्लाघनीयोऽसिमेरिपुः ।

cintayāmāsacāśvāsyavimṛśya ca mahābalḥ ||6.71.75|| sādhubāṇanipātenaślāghanīyo'simeripuḥ |

Translation

महाबलः extra ordinary mighty, आश्वास्य recovering, विमृश्य reflecting, चिन्तयामास contemplated, साधु course of action, बाणनिपातेन releasing the arrow, मे me, श्लाघनीयः worthy of praise, रिपुः enemy, असि you are.

Meaning

Recovering from the hurt and reflecting, the Rakshasa contemplated the course of action, and said 'By releasing the arrow on me you are an enemy worthy of praise."

YK-71-76Yuddha Kanda 71.76

विधायैवंविनम्यास्यंनियम्य च भुजावुभौ ।।6.71.76।। स रथोपस्थमास्थायरथेनप्रचचार ह ।

vidhāyaivṃvinamyāsyṃniyamya ca bhujāvubhau ||6.71.76|| sa rathopasthamāsthāyarathenapracacāra ha |

Translation

एवम् in that way, विधाय knowing, आस्यम् face, विनम्य bending, भुजावुभौ both shoulders, नियम्य च setting right, सः he, रथोपस्थम् on the rear of the chariot, आस्थाय settled, रथेन from chariot, प्रचचार ह started to move.

Meaning

Having spoken that way bending his face setting both shoulders right, he settled at the rear end of the chariot started to move from the chariot.

कंत्रीन्पञ्चसप्तेतिसायन्राक्षसर्षभः ।।6.71.77।। आददेसन्दधेचापिविचकर्षोत्ससर्ज च ।

Translation

राक्षसर्षभः bull among Rakshasas, एकम् one, त्रीन् three, पञ्च five, सप्तेति seven, सायकान् arrows, आददे taking, सन्दधेचापि fixing to the bow, विचकर्ष stretching, उत्ससर्जच and released.

Meaning

The bull among the Rakshasas taking, one, three, five and seven arrows, fixing them to the bow stretching released.

YK-71-78Yuddha Kanda 71.78

तेबाणाःकालसङ्काशाराक्षसेन्द्रधुनुश्च्युताः ।।6.71.78।। हेमपुङ्खारविप्रख्याश्चक्रुर्दीप्तमिवाम्बरम् ।

tebāṇāḥkālasaṅkāśārākṣasendradhunuścyutāḥ ||6.71.78|| hemapuṅkhāraviprakhyāścakrurdīptamivāmbaram |

Translation

राक्षसेन्द्रधनुश्च्युताः arrows released from Rakshasa's bow, कालसङ्काशाः like the spirit of time, हेमपुङ्खाः with gold feathered, रविप्रख्याः shone like the Sun, ते they, अम्बरम् sky, दीप्तम् इव glowing like, चक्रुः made.

Meaning

The gold feathered arrows released from the rakshasas's bow, were like death arrows which shone in the sky as if the sky was glowing.

YK-71-79Yuddha Kanda 71.79

तस्तान्राक्षसोत्सृष्टान्शरौघान्राघवानुजः ।।6.71.79।। असम्ब्रान्तःप्रचिच्छेदनिशितैर्बहुभिश्शरैः ।

tastānrākṣasotsṛṣṭānśaraughānrāghavānujḥ ||6.71.79|| asambrāntḥpracicchedaniśitairbahubhiśśaraiḥ |

Translation

ततः then, राघवानुजः Raghava's brother, राक्षसोत्सत्सृष्टान् released by the Rakshasa, तान् them, शरौघान् volley of arrows, असंभ्रान्तः unconfounded, निशितैः sharp, बहुभिः many, शरैः arrows, प्रचिच्छेद shattered.

Meaning

Raghava's brother remained unconfounded and then he shattered the volley of many sharp arrows released by the Rakshasa.

YK-71-80Yuddha Kanda 71.80

तान् शरान्युधिसम्प्रेक्ष्यनिकृत्तान्रावणात्मजः ।।6.71.80।। चुकोपत्रिदशेन्द्रारिर्जग्राहनिशितंशरम् ।

tān śarānyudhisamprekṣyanikṛttānrāvaṇātmajḥ ||6.71.80|| cukopatridaśendrārirjagrāhaniśitṃśaram |

Translation

त्रिदशेन्द्रारि Enemy of Indra, रावणात्मजः Ravana's son, युधि in battle, निकृत्तान् ineffective, तान् शरान् all kinds of arrows, सम्प्रेक्ष्य observing चुपोप angry, निशितम् sharp, शरम् arrow, जग्राह took up.

Meaning

Ravana's son, an enemy of Indra, observing that all arrows have been ineffective, took up another sharp arrow.

YK-71-81Yuddha Kanda 71.81

ससन्धायमहातेजास्तंबाणंसहसोत्सृजत् ।।6.71.81।। तेनस्सौमित्रिमायान्तमाजघानस्तनान्तरे ।

sasandhāyamahātejāstṃbāṇṃsahasotsṛjat ||6.71.81|| tenassaumitrimāyāntamājaghānastanāntare |

Translation

महातेजाः very energetic, सः he, तम् his, बाणम् arrow, सन्धाय fixing, सहसा forcibly, उत्सृजत् released, तेन by that, आयान्तम् , सौमित्रिम् Saumithri's, स्तनान्तरे between is breast, आजघान pierced.

Meaning

Highly energetic Atikaya, fixing another arrow released it between the breasts of Saumithri and pierced.

YK-71-82Yuddha Kanda 71.82

अतिकायेनसौमित्रिस्ताडितोयुधिवक्षसि ।।6.71.82।। सुस्रावरुधिरंतीव्रंमदंमत्तइवद्विपः ।

atikāyenasaumitristāḍitoyudhivakṣasi ||6.71.82|| susrāvarudhirṃtīvrṃmadṃmattaivadvipḥ |

Translation

युधि in battle, अतिकायेन by Atikaya, वक्षसि chest, ताडितः hurt, सौमित्रिः Saumithri, मत्तः in rut द्विपः elephant, मदम् इव like the fluid, तीव्रम् swiftly, रुधिरम् blood, सुस्राव flowed.

Meaning

In the battle, Saumithri was hurt in the chest by Atikaya's arrow and blood flowed like the ichor from elephant in rut.

YK-71-83Yuddha Kanda 71.83

सचकारतदात्मानंविशल्यंसहसाविभुः ।।6.71.83।। जग्राह च शरंतीक्ष्णमस्त्रेणापिचसन्दधे ।

sacakāratadātmānṃviśalyṃsahasāvibhuḥ ||6.71.83|| jagrāha ca śarṃtīkṣṇamastreṇāpicasandadhe |

Translation

विभुः glorious, सः he, तदा then, आत्मानम् stuck in his body, सहसा forcibly, विशल्यम् noble, चकार seized, तीक्षणम् pointed, शरम् arrow, जग्राह removed, अस्त्रेणपि also with mystic spell, सन्दधे च pulled out.

Meaning

He (Lakshmana) being glorious and noble himself seized hold of the pointed arrow stuck in his body and removed it with a mystic spell.

YK-71-84Yuddha Kanda 71.84

आग्नेयेनतदाऽस्त्रेणयोजयामाससायकम् ।।6.71.84।। स जज्वालतदाबाणोधनुष्यस्यमहात्मनः ।

āgneyenatadā'streṇayojayāmāsasāyakam ||6.71.84|| sa jajvālatadābāṇodhanuṣyasyamahātmanḥ |

Translation

तदा then, आग्नेयेनअस्त्रेण with the missile presided over by fire god, सायकम् arrow, योजयामास concentration of the mind fixed, महात्मनः great self, अस्य his, बाणः arrow, धनुष्य bow.

Meaning

Then Lakshmana by concentration of his mind fixed on fire god which presided over the arrow, that great selffixed in his bow glowed.

YK-71-85Yuddha Kanda 71.85

अतिकायोतितेजस्वीसौरमस्त्रंसमादधे ।।6.71.85।। तेनबाणंभुजङ्गाभंहेमपुङ्खमयोजयत् ।

atikāyotitejasvīsauramastrṃsamādadhe ||6.71.85|| tenabāṇṃbhujaṅgābhṃhemapuṅkhamayojayat |

Translation

अतितेजस्वी highly energetic, अतिकायः Atikaya, सौरम् अस्त्रम् weapon presided over by Sun god, समाददे fixing, भुजङ्गाभम् similar to serpent, हेमपुङ्खम् with gold feathers, तंबाणम् that arrow, तेन by that, अयोजयत् fixed it.

Meaning

Highly energetic Atikaya took a serpentlike arrow with gold feathers and charged it by the concentration of his mind on the power of Sun god.

YK-71-86Yuddha Kanda 71.86

तदस्त्रंज्वलितंघोरंलक्ष्मणश्शरमाहितम् ।।6.71.86।। अतिकायायचिक्षेपकालदण्डमिवान्तकः ।

tadastrṃjvalitṃghorṃlakṣmaṇaśśaramāhitam ||6.71.86|| atikāyāyacikṣepakāladaṇḍamivāntakḥ |

Translation

लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, ज्वलितम् glowing, घोरम् fierce, तत् that, अस्त्रम् missile, आहितम् placed, शरम् arrow, अन्तकः death, कालदण्डमिव like the staff of god of death, अतिकायाय at Atikaya, चिक्षेप shattered.

Meaning

Lakshmana placed that fierce, glowing missile looking like the staff of God of death on Atikaya.

आग्नेयेनाभिसंयुक्तंदृष्टवाबाणंनिशाचरः ।।6.71.87।। उत्ससर्जतदाबाणंदीप्तंसूर्यास्त्रयोजितम् ।

Translation

निशाचरः night ranger, आग्नेयास्त्राभिसंयुक्तम् united with the missile of fire god, बाणम् arrow, दृष्टवा seeing, तदा then, सूर्यास्त्रयोजितम् united with the charge of sun god, दीप्तम् glowing, बाणम् arrow, उत्ससर्ज released on him.

Meaning

The night ranger, seeing the missile charged with fire god coming towards him, released the glowing arrow charged with the power of Sun god.

YK-71-88Yuddha Kanda 71.88

तावुभावम्बरेबाणावन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः ।।6.71.88।। तेजसासंप्रदीप्ताग्रौक्रुद्धाविवभुजंगमौ ।

tāvubhāvambarebāṇāvanyonyamabhijaghnatuḥ ||6.71.88|| tejasāsṃpradīptāgraukruddhāvivabhujṃgamau |

Translation

तेजसा effulgent, संप्रदीप्ताग्रौ flaming with fire, तौ those, उभौ two, बाणौ arrows, क्रुद्धौ angry, भुजंगमौइव serpents like, अन्योन्यम् one another, अम्बरे sky, अभिजघ्नतुः struck violently.

Meaning

Both the arrows effulgent, flaming with fire, were like angry serpents in the sky striking one another violently.

YK-71-89-90Yuddha Kanda 71.89–90 (युग्मम्)

तावन्योन्यंविनिर्दह्यपेततुर्धरणीतले ।।6.71.89।। निरर्चिषौभस्मकृतौ न भ्राजेतेशरोत्तमौ । तावुभौदीप्यमानौस्म न भ्राजेतेमहीतले ।।6.71.90।।

tāvanyonyṃvinirdahyapetaturdharaṇītale ||6.71.89|| nirarciṣaubhasmakṛtau na bhrājeteśarottamau | tāvubhaudīpyamānausma na bhrājetemahītale ||6.71.90||

Translation

तौ those two, अन्योन्यम् one another, विनिर्दह्य burning themselves, पृथिवीतले on the earth surface, पेततुः fallen, निरर्चिषौ with no life, भस्मकृतौ burnt to ashes, शरोत्तमौ best of arrows, न भ्राजेते not shine, दीप्यमानौ glowing, तौ those, उभौ two, महीतले on the ground, न भ्राजेते not.

Meaning

Those two burning one another and themselves burning had fallen on the earth surface with no fire. Those two best of arrows though glowing, having fallen on earth did not shine as they ceased to emit flames and had been reduced to ashes.

ततोऽतिकायस्सङ्कृद्धस्त्वस्त्रमैषीकमुत्सृजत् । तत्प्रचिच्छेदसौमित्रिरस्त्रमैन्द्रेणवीर्यवान् ।।6.71.91।।

Meaning

Then Atikaya seized with anger discharged Ishikam presided over by Twashta (the architect of gods). Saumithri then split the arrow with one presided by Indra and split Ishikam.

YK-71-92Yuddha Kanda 71.92

ऐषीकंनिहतंदृष्टवारुषितोरावणात्मजः । याम्येनार्स्तेणसङ्कृद्धोयोजयामाससायकम् ।।6.71.92।।

aiṣīkṃnihatṃdṛṣṭavāruṣitorāvaṇātmajḥ | yāmyenārsteṇasaṅkṛddhoyojayāmāsasāyakam ||6.71.92||

Translation

रुषितः annoyed, रावणात्मजः Son of Ravana, ऐषीकम् Ishikam, निहतम् having been destroyed, दृष्टवा seeing, सङ्कृद्धः enraged, सायकम् arrow, याम्येन of Yama, अस्त्रेण arrow, योजयामास struck.

Meaning

Annoyed by his arrow Ishikam being struck, Atikaya, son of Ravana charged Lakshmana's arrow with an arrow presided over by Yama.

YK-71-93Yuddha Kanda 71.93

ततस्तदस्त्रंचिक्षेपलक्ष्मणायनिशाचरः । वायव्येनतदस्त्रेणनिजघान स लक्ष्मणः ।।6.71.93।।

tatastadastrṃcikṣepalakṣmaṇāyaniśācarḥ | vāyavyenatadastreṇanijaghāna sa lakṣmaṇḥ ||6.71.93||

Translation

ततः then, निशाचरः night ranger, तत् that, अस्त्रम् arrow, लक्ष्मणाय Lakshmana,चिक्षेप shattered, सःलक्ष्मणः that Lakshmana, तत् that, वायव्येनअस्त्रेण arrow presided by Vayu, निजघान charged.

Meaning

Then the night ranger shattered the arrow of Lakshmana and in turn released an arrow presided by Vayu.

YK-71-94Yuddha Kanda 71.94

अथैनंशरधाराभिर्धाराभिरिवतोयदः । अभ्यवर्षत्सुसङ्कृद्धोलक्ष्मणोरावणात्मजम् ।।6.71.94।।

Translation

अथ and then, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, सङ्कृद्धः enraged, एनम् it, रावणात्मजम् Ravana's son, तोयदः water, धाराभिःइव rainy cloud, शरधाराभिः showered arrows, अभ्यवर्षत heavy torrents.

Meaning

And then enraged Lakshmana covered with water like a rainy cloud would shower with torrents.

YK-71-95Yuddha Kanda 71.95

तेऽतिकायंसमासाद्यकवचेवज्रभूषिते । भग्नाग्रशल्यास्सहसापेतुर्बाणामहीतले ।।6.71.95।।

te'tikāyṃsamāsādyakavacevajrabhūṣite | bhagnāgraśalyāssahasāpeturbāṇāmahītale ||6.71.95||

Translation

ते those, बाणाः arrows, अतिकायम् Atikaya, समासाद्य on touching, वज्रभूषिते like diamond like body, कवचे covering, भग्नाग्रशल्याः broken his coat of iron nails touching the body, सहसा with force, महीतले on ground, पेतुः fallen.

Meaning

On those arrows touching Atikaya's diamond like body, the pointed arrows shattered the coat covering the body and the broken coat of nails had fallen down.

YK-71-96Yuddha Kanda 71.96

तान्मोघानभिसम्प्रेक्ष्यलक्ष्मणःपरवीरहा । अभ्यवर्षन्महेषूणांसहस्रेणमहायशाः ।।6.71.96।।

tānmoghānabhisamprekṣyalakṣmaṇḥparavīrahā | abhyavarṣanmaheṣūṇāṃsahasreṇamahāyaśāḥ ||6.71.96||

Translation

परवीरहा subduer of enemies, महायशाः of great fame, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, तान् them, मोघान् useless, अभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य looking at them, महेषूणाम् mighty, सहस्रेण thousand, अभ्यवर्षत rained.

Meaning

Lakshmana of great fame, subduer of enemy looking at the arrows becoming useless mighty hero released thousand arrows.

YK-71-97Yuddha Kanda 71.97

स वृष्यमाणोबाणौघैरतिकायोमहाबलः । अवध्यकवचस्सङ्ख्येराक्षसोनैवविव्यथे ।।6.71.97।।

sa vṛṣyamāṇobāṇaughairatikāyomahābalḥ | avadhyakavacassaṅkhyerākṣasonaivavivyathe ||6.71.97||

Translation

बाणौघैः covered with arrows, वृष्यमाणः showered down, महाबलः mighty, अवध्यकवचः shield that impenetrable, राक्षसः Rakshasa, अतिकायः Atikaya, सङ्ख्ये in battlefield, विव्यथे not felt tormented.

Meaning

Though covered with arrows showered on him, mighty Rakshasa Atikaya had an impenetrable shield in the battlefield and could not feel the torment.

YK-71-98Yuddha Kanda 71.98

शरंचाशीविषाकारंलक्ष्मणायव्यपासृजत् । स तेनविद्धस्सौमित्रिर्मर्मदेशेशरेण ह ।।6.71.98।। मुहूर्तमात्रंनिस्संज्ञोह्यभवच्छत्रुतापनः ।

śarṃcāśīviṣākārṃlakṣmaṇāyavyapāsṛjat | sa tenaviddhassaumitrirmarmadeśeśareṇa ha ||6.71.98|| muhūrtamātrṃnissṃjñohyabhavacchatrutāpanḥ |

Translation

आशीविषाकारम् resembling a poisonous serpent, शरम् arrow, लक्ष्मणाय at Lakshmana, व्यपासृजत् , र्मर्मदेशे vital part, तेनशरेण by that arrow, विद्धः knowing, शत्रुतापनः tormentor of foes, सःसौमित्रिः that Saumithri, मुहूर्तमात्रम् for a short while, निस्संज्ञ lost consciousness, अभवत् became.

Meaning

Atikaya released an arrow resembling a poisonous serpent at Lakshmana. Pierced in vital part Saumithri, the tormentor of the enemy lost consciousness for a while.

YK-71-99-100Yuddha Kanda 71.99–100 (युग्मम्)

ततःस्संज्ञामुपालभ्यचतुर्भिस्सायकोत्तमैः ।।6.71.99।। निजघानहयान्सङ्ख्येसारथिं च महाबलः । ध्वजस्योन्मथनंकृत्वाशरवर्षैररिन्दमः ।।6.71.100।।

Translation

ततः then, महाबलः mighty, अरिन्दमः subduer of enemies, संज्ञाम् regaining senses, उपालभ्य getting up, शरवर्षैः rain of arrows, ध्वजस्य chariot pole, उन्मथनम् uplifted, कृत्वा destroying, चतुर्भिः four, सायकोत्तमैः best arrows, सङ्ख्ये in the battlefield, सारथिम् charioteer, हयान् horses, निजघान struck down.

Meaning

Then mighty subduer of enemies, regaining senses, getting up destroyed the chariot pole with rain of arrows. Taking up four best arrows he struck down the chariot, charioteer, and the horses.

YK-71-101Yuddha Kanda 71.101

असम्भ्रान्तस्ससौमित्रिस्तान्शरानभिलक्षितान् । मुमोचलक्ष्मणोबाणान्वधार्थंतस्यरक्षसः ।।6.71.101।।

asambhrāntassasaumitristānśarānabhilakṣitān | mumocalakṣmaṇobāṇānvadhārthṃtasyarakṣasḥ ||6.71.101||

Translation

सौमित्रिः Saumithri, सःलक्ष्मणः that Lakshmana, असम्भ्रान्तः inflict injury, अभिलक्षितान् desiring, तान् शरान् those arrows, तस्यरक्षसः of that Rakshasa, वधार्थम् for killing, मुमोच wishing.

Meaning

Saumithri, son of Sumithra, was not able to inflict injury on that Rakshasa with those arrows, though desiring to kill him.

YK-71-102Yuddha Kanda 71.102

न शशाकरुजंकर्तुंयुधितस्यनरोत्तमः । अथैनमभ्युपागम्यवायुर्वाक्यमुवाच ह ।।6.71.102।।

na śaśākarujṃkartuṃyudhitasyanarottamḥ | athainamabhyupāgamyavāyurvākyamuvāca ha ||6.71.102||

Translation

नरोत्तमः best of men, युधि in battle, रुजम् to injure, कर्तुम् to do, न शशाक not be killed, अथ now, वायुः Vayu, एनम् in that way, उपागम्य having come, वाक्यम् words, उवाच ह spoke to him.

Meaning

Wind god (Vayu) having come to the best of men, Lakshmana, spoke to him that in battle it is not possible to injure him or kill him.

YK-71-103Yuddha Kanda 71.103

ब्रह्मदत्तवरोह्येषअवध्यकवचावृतः । ब्राह्मेणास्त्रेणभ्निथ्येनमेषवध्योहिनान्यथा ।।6.71.103।। अवध्यएषह्यन्येषामस्त्राणांकवचीबली ।

brahmadattavarohyeṣaavadhyakavacāvṛtḥ | brāhmeṇāstreṇabhnithyenameṣavadhyohinānyathā ||6.71.103|| avadhyaeṣahyanyeṣāmastrāṇāṃkavacībalī |

Translation

ब्रह्मदत्तवरः by the boon given by Brahma, एषः in that way, अवध्यकवचावृतः covered by armour which can't be broken, एनम् therefore, ब्राह्मेणअस्त्रेण by Brahma's weapon, भिधनि strike, एषः because, अन्यथा other, वध्यः to kill, न not, कवची armour, बली strong, एषः in that way, अन्येषाम् with any other, अस्त्राणाम् by other weapon, अवध्यः not possible to kill.

Meaning

By the boon given by Brahma his body is covered with armour which can't be broken. By Brahma's weapon only you can strike to kill him because of his armour and might. By any other weapon it is not possible to kill him.

YK-71-104Yuddha Kanda 71.104

ततस्तुवायोर्वचनंनिशम्यसौमित्रिरिन्द्रप्रतिमानवीर्यः । समाददेबाणममोघवेगंतद्ब्राह्ममस्त्रंसहसानियोज्य ।।6.71.104।।

tatastuvāyorvacanṃniśamyasaumitririndrapratimānavīryḥ | samādadebāṇamamoghavegṃtadbrāhmamastrṃsahasāniyojya ||6.71.104||

Translation

ततः then, इन्द्रप्रतिमानवीर्यः equal to Indra in valiance, सौमित्रिः Saumithri, वायोः Wind god, वचनम् words, निशम्य hearing, अथ now, तत् that, ब्राह्मम् अस्त्रम् pressing Brahma weapon to serve, सहसा with force नियोज्य charged, आमोघवेगम् terrific speed, बाणम् arrow, समादधे went, तस्मिन् वरास्त्रेतु while being fixed into the arrows.

Meaning

Then Saumithri who is equal to Indra hearing wind god's words invoked Brahma's weapon into service. While he was charging into his arrows and fixing the arrow went at terrific speed.

YK-71-105Yuddha Kanda 71.105

नियुज्यमानेसौमित्रिणाबाणवरेशिताग्रे । दिशश्चचन्द्रर्कमहाग्रहाश्चनभश्चतत्रासचचालचोर्वी ।।6.71.105।।

niyujyamānesaumitriṇābāṇavareśitāgre | diśaścacandrarkamahāgrahāścanabhaścatatrāsacacālacorvī ||6.71.105||

Translation

सौमित्रिणआ Saumithri, शिताग्रे sharp pointed tip, बाणवरे best, तस्मिन् that, वरास्त्रे foremost arrow नियुज्यमाने charged, दिशः च directions, चन्द्रार्कमहाग्रहाश्च moon and Sun and other planets, नभश्च sky, तत्रास feared, ऊर्वीच earth, चचाल shook.

Meaning

As Saumithri charged the sharp pointed foremost arrow, the directions, moon, Sun and other planets and the sky, earth, and all space shook.

YK-71-106Yuddha Kanda 71.106

तंब्रह्मणोऽस्त्रेणनियुज्यचापेशरंसुपुङ्खंयमदूतकल्पम् । सौमित्रिरिन्द्रारिसुतस्यतस्यससर्जबाणंयुधिवज्रकल्पम् ।।6.71.106।।

tṃbrahmaṇo'streṇaniyujyacāpeśarṃsupuṅkhṃyamadūtakalpam | saumitririndrārisutasyatasyasasarjabāṇṃyudhivajrakalpam ||6.71.106||

Translation

सौमित्रिः Saumithri, सुपुङ्खम् golden feathered, यमदूतकल्पम् like the messenger of death, तंशरम् that arrow, चापे shaft, ब्रह्मणःअस्त्रेण by the Brahma's arrow, नियुज्य charged, वज्रकल्पम् like thunderbolt, बाणम् arrow, तस्य its, अन्द्रारिसुतस्य son of Indra's enemy, ससर्ज released.

Meaning

Golden feathered arrow, which resembled thunderbolt, was released on Atikaya, enemy of Indra for whom it was like a messenger of death. It was charged with Brahma's mystic by Saumithri and released on fixing it.

YK-71-107Yuddha Kanda 71.107

तंलक्ष्मणोत्सृष्टममोघवेगंसमापतन्तंज्यलनप्रकाशम् । सुपर्णवज्रोत्तमचित्रपुङ्खंतदाऽतिकायस्समरेददर्श ।।6.71.107।।

tṃlakṣmaṇotsṛṣṭamamoghavegṃsamāpatantṃjyalanaprakāśam | suparṇavajrottamacitrapuṅkhṃtadā'tikāyassamaredadarśa ||6.71.107||

Translation

तदा then, लक्ष्मणोत्सृष्टममोघवेगम् which possessed the velocity of wind, ज्वलनप्रकाशम् emitting sparks, सुपर्णवज्रोत्तमचित्रपुङ्खम् feathers resembling wings of Garuda, समापतन्तम् coming at speed, तम् those, अतिकायः Atikaya, समरे in battle, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Atikaya saw the arrow of Lakshmana coming at a speed, which possessed the velocity of the wind, fixed with feathers resembling the wings of Garuda in the battle.

YK-71-108Yuddha Kanda 71.108

तंप्रेक्षमाणस्सहसाऽतिकायोजघानबाणैर्निशितैरनेकैः । स सायकस्तस्यसुपर्णवेगस्तदातिकायस्यजगामपार्श्वम् ।।6.71.108।।

tṃprekṣamāṇassahasā'tikāyojaghānabāṇairniśitairanekaiḥ | sa sāyakastasyasuparṇavegastadātikāyasyajagāmapārśvam ||6.71.108||

Translation

अतिकायः Atikaya, तम् those, प्रेक्षमाणंसहसा as he was looking, अनेकैः many, निशितैः sharp, बाणैः arrows, जघान moving, सुपर्णवेगः at the speed of Garuda, तस्य its, सःसायकः that, तथा like that, अतिकायस्य towards Atikaya, पार्श्वम् side, जगाम reached.

Meaning

As Atikaya was looking at the arrow, Lakshmana struck many arrows forcibly with sharp arrows possessing the speed of Garuda. The arrows reached towards Atikaya.

YK-71-109Yuddha Kanda 71.109

तमागतंप्रेक्ष्यतदातिकायोबाणंप्रदीप्तान्तककालकल्पम् । जघानक्त्यृष्टिगदाकुठारैशूलैर्हुलैश्चाप्यविपन्नचेता ।।6.71.109।।

tamāgatṃprekṣyatadātikāyobāṇṃpradīptāntakakālakalpam | jaghānaktyṛṣṭigadākuṭhāraiśūlairhulaiścāpyavipannacetā ||6.71.109||

Translation

तदा then, अतिकायः Atikaya, प्रदीप्तान्तककालकल्पम् glowing like the spirit of death, आगतम् coming, तंबाणम् that arrow, प्रेक्ष्य perceiving, अविसन्नचेता with unceasing effort, शक्त्यृष्टिगदाकुठारैः javelins, spears, maces, axes, शूलैः tridents, शरैश्चापि and arrows, जघान struck.

Meaning

Perceiving the glowing arrow coming, like the spirit of death, Atikaya struck it with unceasing effort with javelins, spears, maces, axes, tridents and even arrows.

YK-71-110Yuddha Kanda 71.110

तान्यायुधान्यद्भुतविग्रहाणिमोघानिकृत्वा स शरोऽग्निदीप्तः । प्रगृह्यतस्यैवकिरीटजुष्टम् ततोऽतिकायस्यशिरोजहार ।।6.71.110।।

tānyāyudhānyadbhutavigrahāṇimoghānikṛtvā sa śaro'gnidīptḥ | pragṛhyatasyaivakirīṭajuṣṭam tato'tikāyasyaśirojahāra ||6.71.110||

Translation

ततो that, अग्निदीप्तः glowing like fire, सःशरः those arrows, अद्भुतविग्रहाणि wonderful shapes, तानि them, आयुधानि weapons, मोघानि unsuccessful, कृत्वा becoming, तस्य its, अतिकायस्य Atikaya's, किरीटजुष्टम् decked with crown, शिरः head, प्रगृह्य seizing, जहार severed.

Meaning

This great arrow of Lakshmana glowing like fire rendered the weapons in wonderful shapes released by Atikaya unsuccessful and severed the head of Atikaya decked with a crown.

YK-71-111Yuddha Kanda 71.111

तछचिरस्सशिरस्त्राणंलक्ष्मणेषुप्रपीडितम् । पपातसहसाभूमौशृङ्गंहिमवतोयथा ।।6.71.111।।

tachacirassaśirastrāṇṃlakṣmaṇeṣuprapīḍitam | papātasahasābhūmauśṛṅgṃhimavatoyathā ||6.71.111||

Translation

लक्ष्मणेषुप्रपीडितम् struck by Lakshmana's arrow, सशिरस्त्राणम् decked with crown, तत् that, शिरः head, हिमवतः like Himalaya, शृङ्गंयथा peak like, सहसा forcibly, भूमौ on ground, पपात fell.

Meaning

Struck by Lakshmana's arrow, the crowned head of Atikaya fell on the ground like Himalaya peak.

YK-71-112Yuddha Kanda 71.112

तंभूमौनिपतितंदृष्टवाविक्षिप्तभूषणम् बभूवुर्व्यथितास्सर्वेहतशेषानिशाचराः ।।6.71.112।।

tṃbhūmaunipatitṃdṛṣṭavāvikṣiptabhūṣaṇam babhūvurvyathitāssarvehataśeṣāniśācarāḥ ||6.71.112||

Translation

हतशेषाः leftover not killed, सर्वे all, निशाचराः Rakshasas, भूमौ on the ground, पतितम् fallen, विक्षिप्तभूषणम् ornaments broken and scattered, दृष्टवा perceiving, व्यथिताः distressed, बभूवुः felt.

Meaning

All the Rakshasas who escaped from killing, felt distressed seeing the king and his ornaments scattered on the ground.

YK-71-113Yuddha Kanda 71.113

तेविषण्णमुखादीनाःप्रहारजनितश्रमाः । विनेदुरुच्चैर्बहवस्सहसाविस्वरैस्स्वरैः ।।6.71.113।।

teviṣaṇṇamukhādīnāḥprahārajanitaśramāḥ | vineduruccairbahavassahasāvisvaraissvaraiḥ ||6.71.113||

Translation

प्रहारजनितश्रमाः pride hurt sorrowful, विषण्णमुखाः desperate looks, दीनांबहवः very sad, ते they, सहसा , विस्वरैः discordant tones, स्वरैः voice, उच्चैः burst into, विनेदुः roared.

Meaning

All the Rakshasas with desperate looks, their pride hurt, became very sad and burst into discordant tones roared aloud.

YK-71-114Yuddha Kanda 71.114

ततस्तेत्वरितंयातानिरपेक्षानिशाचराः । पुरीमभिमुखाभीताद्रवन्तोनायकेहते ।।6.71.114।।

tatastetvaritṃyātānirapekṣāniśācarāḥ | purīmabhimukhābhītādravantonāyakehate ||6.71.114||

Translation

नायके leader, हते killed, ततः then, निशाचराः night rangers, भीताः afraid, निरपेक्षाः listless, पुरीम् city, अभिमुखाः towards, द्रवन्तः ran, तेत्वरितम् quickly, याताः from there.

Meaning

With Leader killed, the night rangers were afraid. Listless they ran quickly towards Lanka.

YK-71-115Yuddha Kanda 71.115

प्रहर्षयुक्ताबहवस्तुवानराःप्रबुद्दपद्मप्रतिमाननास्तदा । अपूजयन्लक्ष्मणविष्टभागिनंहतेरिपौभीमबलेदुरासदे ।।6.71.115।।

praharṣayuktābahavastuvānarāḥprabuddapadmapratimānanāstadā | apūjayanlakṣmaṇaviṣṭabhāginṃhateripaubhīmabaledurāsade ||6.71.115||

Translation

भीमबले terrible might, दुरासदे difficult to approach, रिपौ enemy, हते killed, तदा the, बहवः many, वानराः Vanaras, प्रहर्षयुक्ताः extremely delighted, प्रबुद्दपद्मप्रतिमाननाः whose faces were like lotuses in bloom, इष्टभागिनम् filled with joy, लक्ष्मणम् Lakshmana, अपूजयन् worshipped.

Meaning

Enemy who was difficult to approach and of terrible might being killed, the Vanaras were extremely delighted. Their faces looked like lotuses in bloom. Filled with joy they worshipped Lakshmana.
