YK-42-1Yuddha Kanda 42.1

ततस्तेराक्षसास्तत्रगत्वारावणमन्दिरम् । न्यवेदयन्पुरींरुद्धांरामेणसहवानरैः ।।6.42.1।।

tatasterākṣasāstatragatvārāvaṇamandiram | nyavedayanpurīṃruddhāṃrāmeṇasahavānaraiḥ ||6.42.1||

Translation

तत then, राक्षसा Rakshasas, स्तत्र there, रावणमन्दिरम् Ravana's abode, गत्वा proceeding to, रामेण Rama's, वानरैः Vanaras, सह along with, रुद्धां occupied, न्यवेदय informed, न्पुरीं total city.

Meaning

Then the Rakshasas proceeding to Ravana's abode informed that Rama along with the vanaras have occupied the whole of Lanka.

YK-42-2Yuddha Kanda 42.2

रुद्धांतुनगरींश्रुत्वाजातक्रोधोनिशाचरः । विधानंद्विगुणंश्रुत्वाप्रासादंसोऽध्यरोहत ।।6.42.2।।

ruddhāṃtunagarīṃśrutvājātakrodhoniśācarḥ | vidhānṃdviguṇṃśrutvāprāsādṃso'dhyarohata ||6.42.2||

Translation

रुद्धां occupied, तु also, नगरीं city, श्रुत्वा hearing, जातक्रोधो very furious, निशाचरः night ranger, विधानं knowing, द्विगुणं twice, श्रुत्वा hearing, प्रासादं top of the mansion, अध्यरोहत planning for the protection of Lanka.

Meaning

On knowing that Lanka is occupied, the night ranger Ravana, became very furious and doubled the forces of Lanka for the protection and went to the top of Lanka palace.

YK-42-3Yuddha Kanda 42.3

सददर्शावृतांलङ्कांसशैलवनकाननाम् । असङ्ख्येयैर्हरिगणैःसर्वतोयुद्धकाङ्क्षिभिः ।।6.42.3।।

sadadarśāvṛtāṃlaṅkāṃsaśailavanakānanām | asaṅkhyeyairharigaṇaiḥsarvatoyuddhakāṅkṣibhiḥ ||6.42.3||

Translation

स: he, युद्धकाङ्क्षिभिः desirous of combat, असङ्ख्येयै countless numbers, हर्रिगणैः troops of Vanaras, सशैलवनकाननाम् mountains and forests, सर्वतो all over, अवृतां occupied, लङ्कां Lanka, ददर्शा observed.

Meaning

He observed a countless number of Vanara troops spread all over Lanka, mountains, and forests.

YK-42-4Yuddha Kanda 42.4

सदृष्ट्वावानरैःसर्वांवसुधांकवलीकृताम् । कथंक्षपयितव्याःस्युरितिचिन्तापरोऽभवत् ।।6.42.4।।

sadṛṣṭvāvānaraiḥsarvāṃvasudhāṃkavalīkṛtām | kathṃkṣapayitavyāḥsyuriticintāparo'bhavat ||6.42.4||

Translation

स: he, वानरैः Vanaras, सर्वां all, वसुधां earth, कवलीकृताम् occupied, दृष्ट्वा seeing, कथं how, स्युरिति thought, क्षपयितव्याः to destroy, चिन्तापरो thinking, अभवत् started.

Meaning

Seeing the Vanaras occupying the entire earth, Ravana thought of destroying and started thinking.

YK-42-5Yuddha Kanda 42.5

सचिन्तयित्वासुचिरंधैर्यमालम्ब्यरावणः । राघवंहरियूथांश्चददर्शायतलोचनः ।।6.42.5।।

sacintayitvāsucirṃdhairyamālambyarāvaṇḥ | rāghavṃhariyūthāṃścadadarśāyatalocanḥ ||6.42.5||

Translation

स: he, रावणः Ravana, सुचिरं for long, चिन्तयित्वा thinking over, धैर्यमालम्ब्य picking up courage, अयतलोचनः with thoughtful eyes, राघवं Raghava, हरियूथांश्च at the Vanaras, ददर्शा saw.

Meaning

Ravana, thinking over for long, picking up courage, saw Rama's Vanaras with thoughtful eyes.

YK-42-6Yuddha Kanda 42.6

राघवःसहसैन्येनमुदितोनामपुप्लुवे । लङ्कांददर्शगुप्तांवैसर्वतोराक्षसैर्वृताम् ।।6.42.6।।

rāghavḥsahasainyenamuditonāmapupluve | laṅkāṃdadarśaguptāṃvaisarvatorākṣasairvṛtām ||6.42.6||

Translation

राघवः Raghava, मुदितो happily, सहसैन्येन with army, पुप्लुवे near, लङ्कां Lanka, सर्वतो all over, राक्षसैर्वृताम् fully filled with Rakshasas, गुप्तांवै protected, लङ्कां Lanka, ददर्श witnessed.

Meaning

Raghava accompanied by the army happily went near and witnessed Lanka filled with Rakshasas all over.

YK-42-7Yuddha Kanda 42.7

दृष्ट्वादाशरथिर्लङ्कांचित्रध्वजपताकिनीम् । जगामसहसासीतांदूयमानेनचेतसा ।।6.42.7।।

dṛṣṭvādāśarathirlaṅkāṃcitradhvajapatākinīm | jagāmasahasāsītāṃdūyamānenacetasā ||6.42.7||

Translation

दाशरथि son of Dasaratha, चित्रध्वजपताकिनीम् decorated with flags and posts, लङ्कां Lanka, चेतसा thinking, सीतां of Sita, दूयमानेन worried, सहसा very much, जगाम remained.

Meaning

The son of Dasaratha saw Lanka decorated with flags and posts and thinking of Sita he became very worried.

YK-42-8Yuddha Kanda 42.8

अत्रसामृगशावाक्षीमत्कृतेजनकात्मजा । पीड्यतेशोकसन्तप्ताकृशास्थण्डिलशायिनी ।।6.42.8।।

atrasāmṛgaśāvākṣīmatkṛtejanakātmajā | pīḍyateśokasantaptākṛśāsthaṇḍilaśāyinī ||6.42.8||

Translation

अत्र here, सा she, मृगशावाक्षी dove eyed, जनकात्मजा Janaka's daughter, पीड्यते tormented, मत्कृते because of me, शोकसन्तप्ता immersed in sorrow, कृशा emaciated, स्थण्डिलशायिनी without food struggling.

Meaning

"Here (Lanka) is the daughter of Janaka, immersed in sorrow because of me, tormented and emaciated without food and struggling."

YK-42-9Yuddha Kanda 42.9

पीड्यमानांसधर्मात्मावैदेहीमनुचिन्तयन् । क्षिप्रमाज्ञापयामासवानरान्द्विषतांवधे ।।6.42.9।।

pīḍyamānāṃsadharmātmāvaidehīmanucintayan | kṣipramājñāpayāmāsavānarāndviṣatāṃvadhe ||6.42.9||

Translation

धर्मात्मा righteous, स: he (Rama), पीड्यमानां pained, वैदेहीम Vaidehi, अचिन्तयन् thinking of very much, क्षिप्रमाज्ञापयामास immediately ordered, वानरान् Vanaras, द्विषतां enemies, वधे to kill.

Meaning

Thinking of Vaidehi again and again, who is pained, Rama ordered the Vanaras to kill the enemies immediately.

YK-42-10Yuddha Kanda 42.10

एवमुक्तेतुवचनेरामेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा । संघर्षमाणाःप्लवगाःसिम्हनादैरनादयन् ।।6.42.10।।

evamuktetuvacanerāmeṇākliṣṭakarmaṇā | sṃgharṣamāṇāḥplavagāḥsimhanādairanādayan ||6.42.10||

Translation

क्लिष्टकर्मणा one who does not cause sorrow, एवमुक्ते having ordered that way तु, वचने his words, प्लवगाः monkeys, संघर्षमाणाः getting ready for war, सिम्हनादैरनादयन् roared like a lion

Meaning

Ordered in that way by Rama, who does not cause sorrow, the monkeys roared like lions getting ready for war on hearing Rama's words.

YK-42-11Yuddha Kanda 42.11

शिखरैर्विकिरामैनांलङ्कांमुष्टिभिरेववा । इतिस्मदधिरेसर्वेमनांसिहरियूथपाः ।।6.42.11।।

śikharairvikirāmaināṃlaṅkāṃmuṣṭibhirevavā | itismadadhiresarvemanāṃsihariyūthapāḥ ||6.42.11||

Translation

हरियूथपाः Vanara troops, लङ्कां Lanka, शिखरैर्विकिरामैनां with mountain peaks, मुष्टिभिरेववा or with fists, इति this, स्मदधिरे will crush, सर्वे all, मनांसि thought.

Meaning

The monkey troops thought of crushing Lanka with their fists and mountain peaks.

YK-42-12Yuddha Kanda 42.12

उद्यम्यगिरिशृङ्गाणिशिखराणिमहान्तिच । तरूंश्चोत्पाट्यविविधांस्तिष्ठन्तिहरियूथपाः ।।6.42.12।।

udyamyagiriśṛṅgāṇiśikharāṇimahāntica | tarūṃścotpāṭyavividhāṃstiṣṭhantihariyūthapāḥ ||6.42.12||

Translation

हरियूथपाः Vanara leaders, गिरिशृङ्गाणि mountains, शिखराणि peaks, तरूंश्चोत्पाट्य holding trees, महान्तिच huge, विविधां many kinds, स्तिष्ठन्ति ready to fight.

Meaning

Holding the mountain peaks, huge trees of many kinds, the Vanara leaders stood ready to fight.

YK-42-13Yuddha Kanda 42.13

प्रेक्षतोराक्षसेन्द्रस्यतान्यनीकानिभागशः । राघवप्रियकामार्थंलङ्कामारुरुहुस्तदा ।।6.42.13।।

prekṣatorākṣasendrasyatānyanīkānibhāgaśḥ | rāghavapriyakāmārthṃlaṅkāmāruruhustadā ||6.42.13||

Translation

राक्षसेन्द्रस्य king of Rakshasas, प्रेक्षतो as he was looking, तान्यनीकानि all the Vanara army, राघवप्रियकामार्थं to make Rama happy, भागशः in divisions, लङ्काम Lanka, आरुरुहुस्तदा ascended the boundary.

Meaning

To make Rama happy, all the Vanara army divided into groups and started ascending the boundary (of Lanka) walls the king of Rakshasas was witnessing.

YK-42-14Yuddha Kanda 42.14

तेताम्रवक्त्राहेमाभारामार्थेत्यक्तजीविताः । लङ्कामेवाभ्यवर्तन्तसालतालशिलायुधाः ।।6.42.14।।

tetāmravaktrāhemābhārāmārthetyaktajīvitāḥ | laṅkāmevābhyavartantasālatālaśilāyudhāḥ ||6.42.14||

Translation

ताम्रवक्त्रा having copper colour faces, हेमाभा golden coloured, रामार्थे for the sake of Rama, त्यक्तजीविताः giving up life, सालतालशिलायुधाः Sala, Tala trees and rocks as weapons, लङ्कामेवाभ्यवर्तन्त went to Lanka.

Meaning

Vanaras of copper colour faces and golden coloured ones, dedicating their lives for the sake of Rama holding Sala trees and rocks went towards Lanka.

YK-42-15Yuddha Kanda 42.15

तेद्रुमैःपर्वताग्रैश्चमुष्टिभिश्चप्लवङ्गमाः । प्राकाराग्राण्यरण्यानिममन्थुस्तोरणानिच ।।6.42.15।।

tedrumaiḥparvatāgraiścamuṣṭibhiścaplavaṅgamāḥ | prākārāgrāṇyaraṇyānimamanthustoraṇānica ||6.42.15||

Translation

ते they (Vanaras ), द्रुमैः trees, पर्वताग्रैश्च peaks of mountains, मुष्टिभिश्च even with fists, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, प्राकाराग्रा top of boundary, अरण्यानि forests, ममन्थुस्तोरणानिच gateways of the city

Meaning

With the means of mountain peaks, as well as their fists, the Vanaras scaled the boundary walls and gateways of the city.

YK-42-16Yuddha Kanda 42.16

पारिखाःपूरयन्तिस्मप्रसन्नसलिलायुताः । पांसुभिःपर्वताग्रैश्चतृणैःकाष्ठैश्चवानराः ।।6.42.16 ।।

pārikhāḥpūrayantismaprasannasalilāyutāḥ | pāṃsubhiḥparvatāgraiścatṛṇaiḥkāṣṭhaiścavānarāḥ ||6.42.16 ||

Translation

वानराः Vanaras, पारिखाः with soil, पर्वताग्रैश्च with mountain peaks, तृणैः with grass, काष्ठैश्च wooden pieces, पांसुभिः moats also, प्रसन्नसलिलायुताः with pure water, पूरयन्ति filled.

Meaning

The Vanaras started filling the moats with soil, pure water, logs of wood, grass, and mountain peaks.

YK-42-17Yuddha Kanda 42.17

ततःसहस्रयूथाश्चकोटीयूथाश्चवानराः । कोटीशतयुताश्चान्येलङ्कामारुरुहुस्तदा ।।6.42.17।।

tatḥsahasrayūthāścakoṭīyūthāścavānarāḥ | koṭīśatayutāścānyelaṅkāmāruruhustadā ||6.42.17||

Translation

ततः then, वानराः Vanaras, सहस्रयूथाश्च thousand, कोटीयूथाश्च one crore, कोटीशतयुताश्चान्ये hundred crores, लङ्काम into Lanka, आरुरुहुस्तदा ascended then.

Meaning

Then the Vanaras in thousands and crores ascended Lanka.

YK-42-18Yuddha Kanda 42.18

काञ्चनानिप्रमृद्नन्तस्तोरणानिप्लवङ्गमाः । कैलासशिखराभानिगोपुराणिप्रमथ्यच ।।6.42.18।।

kāñcanānipramṛdnantastoraṇāniplavaṅgamāḥ | kailāsaśikharābhānigopurāṇipramathyaca ||6.42.18||

Translation

काञ्चनानि golden, प्रमृद्नन्तस्तोरणानि breaking the gateways, कैलासशिखराभानि like the peaks of Kailasa mountain, गोपुराणि towers, प्रमथ्यच crushing, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys went.

Meaning

The Vanaras started breaking the golden gateways and crushing them which were like peaks of Kailasa mountain.

YK-42-19Yuddha Kanda 42.19

आप्लवन्तःप्लवन्तश्चगर्जन्तश्चप्लवङ्गमाः । लङ्कांतामभिधावन्तिमहावारणसंनिभाः ।।6.42.19।।

āplavantḥplavantaścagarjantaścaplavaṅgamāḥ | laṅkāṃtāmabhidhāvantimahāvāraṇasṃnibhāḥ ||6.42.19||

Translation

आप्लवन्तः jumping here and there, महावारणसंनिभाः like huge elephants, प्लवन्तश्च Vanaras, गर्जन्तश्च roaring like lion, लङ्कांतामभिधावन्ति went up to Lanka.

Meaning

Jumping here and there like huge elephants, the Vanaras roaring like lions went into Lanka.

YK-42-20Yuddha Kanda 42.20

जयत्यतिबलोरामोलक्ष्मणश्चमहाबलः । राजाजयतिसुग्रीवोराघवेणाभिपालितः ।।6.42.20।।

jayatyatibalorāmolakṣmaṇaścamahābalḥ | rājājayatisugrīvorāghaveṇābhipālitḥ ||6.42.20||

Translation

जयत्य victorious, अतिबलो exceedingly strong, रामो Rama, महाबलः endowed with supreme, strength, लक्ष्मणश्च Lakshmana also, राजा king, जयति victorious, सुग्रीवो Sugriva, राघवेण by Raghava, अभिपालितः protected by on all sides.

Meaning

"Victorious is Sri Rama, who is exceedingly strong and Lakshmana who is endowed with supreme strength. Victorious is Sugriva the king of Vanaras who is protected by Raghava on all sides."

YK-42-21Yuddha Kanda 42.21

इत्येवंघोषयन्तश्चगर्जन्तश्चप्लवङ्गमाः । अभ्यधावन्तलङ्कायाःप्राकारंकामरूपिणः ।।6.42.21।।

ityevṃghoṣayantaścagarjantaścaplavaṅgamāḥ | abhyadhāvantalaṅkāyāḥprākārṃkāmarūpiṇḥ ||6.42.21||

Translation

कामरूपिणः who could change their form at will, इत्येवं in this manner, घोषयन्तश्च shouting, गर्जन्तश्च roaring, लङ्कायाः into Lanka, प्राकारं defensive walls, अभ्यधावन्त rushed over.

Meaning

Shouting in that manner, the monkeys who could change their form at their will started roaring and rushed towards the defensive walls.

YK-42-22Yuddha Kanda 42.22

वीरबाहुःसुबाहुश्चनलश्चवनगोचरः । निपीड्योपनिविष्टास्तेप्राकारंहरियूथपाः । एतस्मिन्नन्तरेचक्रुःस्कन्धावारनिवेशनम् ।।6.42.22 ।।

vīrabāhuḥsubāhuścanalaścavanagocarḥ | nipīḍyopaniviṣṭāsteprākārṃhariyūthapāḥ | etasminnantarecakruḥskandhāvāraniveśanam ||6.42.22 ||

Translation

वीरबाहुः Veerabahu, सुबाहुश्च and Subahu, नल Nala, वनगोचरः foremost of monkeys, निपीड्योप storming, निविष्टास्ते defensive, प्राकारं boundary walls, हरियूथपाः Vanara leaders, एतस्मिन्नन्तरे in the meantime inside, चक्रुः went, स्कन्धावारनिवेशनम् remained stationed at northeast.

Meaning

Veerabahu, Subahu, Nala and the foremost of the Vanara leaders storming the boundary walls in the meantime went inside and stationed at the northeast gate.

YK-42-23Yuddha Kanda 42.23

पूर्वद्वारंतुकुमुदःकोटीभिर्दशभिर्वृतः । आवृत्यबलवांस्तस्थौहरिभिर्जितकाशिभिः ।।6.42.23।।

pūrvadvārṃtukumudḥkoṭībhirdaśabhirvṛtḥ | āvṛtyabalavāṃstasthauharibhirjitakāśibhiḥ ||6.42.23||

Translation

कुमुदः Kumuda, तु also, कोटीभि one crore, र्दशभि ten, आर्वृतः surrounded by, पूर्वद्वारं east gate, आवृत्य surrounded, बलवां mighty, स्तस्थौ remained, हरिभि monkeys also, र्जितकाशिभिः appearing victorious.

Meaning

Kumuda, surrounded by ten crores of mighty monkeys, who appeared like conquerors, stationed at the east gate.

YK-42-24Yuddha Kanda 42.24

साहाय्यार्थंतुतस्यैवनिविष्टःप्रघसोहरिः । पनसश्चमहाबाहुर्वानरैर्बहुभिर्वृतः ।।6.42.24।।

sāhāyyārthṃtutasyaivaniviṣṭḥpraghasohariḥ | panasaścamahābāhurvānarairbahubhirvṛtḥ ||6.42.24||

Translation

प्रघसो Praghasa, हरिः monkey, महाबाहु broad shouldered, पनसश्च Panasa also, वानर Vanaras, साहाय्यार्थं for assisting, तस्यैव himself, निविष्टः encamped, बहुभि many, आर्वृतः surrounded.

Meaning

Praghasa the broad shouldered Vanara, was surrounded by Panasa for assisting him who encamped surrounded by many.

YK-42-25Yuddha Kanda 42.25

दक्षिणंद्वारमागम्यवीरःशतबलिःकपिः । आवृत्यबलवांस्तस्थौविंशत्याकोटिभिर्वृतः ।।6.42.25।।

dakṣiṇṃdvāramāgamyavīrḥśatabaliḥkapiḥ | āvṛtyabalavāṃstasthauviṃśatyākoṭibhirvṛtḥ ||6.42.25||

Translation

वीरः valiant, शतबलिः Satabali, कपिः monkey, विंशत्या twenty, कोटिभि crores, आवृत्य surrounded by, बलवांस्तस्थौ stood besieging, दक्षिणं south, द्वारमागम्य reached the gate.

Valiant Satabali with twenty crores of monkeys stood besieging the south gate.

सुषेणःपश्चिमद्वारंगतस्तारापिताहरिः । आवृत्यबलवांस्तस्थौषष्टिकोटिभिरावृतः ।।6.42.26।।

suṣeṇḥpaścimadvārṃgatastārāpitāhariḥ | āvṛtyabalavāṃstasthauṣaṣṭikoṭibhirāvṛtḥ ||6.42.26||

गतस्तारापिता father of Tara (wife of Vali), बलवांस्तस्थौ the mighty, सुषेणः Sushena, आवृत्य along with, षष्टिकोटिभिरावृतः sixty crores of monkeys surrounding, पश्चिमद्वारं at the western gate.

YK-42-27Yuddha Kanda 42.27

उत्तरंद्वारमासाद्यरामःसौमित्रिणासह । आवृत्यबलवांस्तस्थौसुग्रीवश्चहरीश्वरः ।।6.42.27।।

uttarṃdvāramāsādyarāmḥsaumitriṇāsaha | āvṛtyabalavāṃstasthausugrīvaścaharīśvarḥ ||6.42.27||

Translation

उत्तरंद्वारमासाद्य reaching north gate, रामः Rama, सौमित्रिणा Saumithri, सह along with, आवृत्य accompanied by, बलवांस्तस्थौ blockading the gate, हरीश्वरः Lord of monkeys, सुग्रीवश्च Sugriva.

गोलाङ्गूलोमहाकायोगवाक्षोभीमदर्शनः । वृतःकोट्यामहावीर्यस्तस्थौरामस्यपार्श्वतः ।।6.42.28।।

golāṅgūlomahākāyogavākṣobhīmadarśanḥ | vṛtḥkoṭyāmahāvīryastasthaurāmasyapārśvatḥ ||6.42.28||

महाकायो of gigantic body, गवाक्षो Gavaksha, भीमदर्शनः of fierce appearance, गोलाङ्गूलो Golangula species of monkeys, कोट्या crore, वृतः surrounded by, महावीर्यस्तस्थौ of extraordinary virility, रामस्य Rama's, पार्श्वतः by the side of.

Gavaksha of gigantic body and fierce appearance, along with one crore of Golangula species of monkeys endowed with extraordinary virility stood by the side of Sri Rama.

ऋक्षाणांभीमवेगानांधूम्रःशत्रुनिबर्हणः । वृतःकोट्यामहावीर्यस्तस्थौरामस्यपार्श्वतः ।।6.42.29।।

ṛkṣāṇāṃbhīmavegānāṃdhūmrḥśatrunibarhaṇḥ | vṛtḥkoṭyāmahāvīryastasthaurāmasyapārśvatḥ ||6.42.29||

वृतः accompanied by, कोट्या one crore, ऋक्षाणां bears, भीमवेगानां of redoubtable fury, धूम्रः Dhumra (brother of Jambavan), शत्रुनिबर्हणः exterminator of his foes, महावीर्यस्तस्थौ endowed with extraordinary valour, रामस्य Rama's, पार्श्वतः by the side of.

सन्नद्धस्तुमहावीर्योगदापाणिर्विभीषणः । वृतोयस्तैस्तुसचिवैस्तस्थौतत्रमहाबलः ।।6.42.30।।

sannaddhastumahāvīryogadāpāṇirvibhīṣaṇḥ | vṛtoyastaistusacivaistasthautatramahābalḥ ||6.42.30||

Translation

वृतो accompanied by, सन्नद्धस्तु defensive clamour, महावीर्यो of extraordinary virility, गदापाणि wielding mace, विर्भीषणः Vibheeshana, यस्तैस्तु stood, सचिवैस्तस्थौ with ministers stood, तत्र there, महाबलः mighty.

Vibheeshana with defensive clamour, of extraordinary virility accompanied by his mighty ministers, stood there with his mace in hand.

गजोगवाक्षोगवयःशरभोगन्धमादनः । समन्तात्परिधावन्तोररक्षुर्हरिवाहिनीम् ।।6.42.31।।

gajogavākṣogavayḥśarabhogandhamādanḥ | samantātparidhāvantorarakṣurharivāhinīm ||6.42.31||

Translation

गजो Gaja, गवाक्षो Gavaksha, गवयः Gava, शरभ Sarabha, गन्धमादनः Gandamadhana, मन्तात्परिधावन्तो all over wandering, ररक्षु protecting, हर्रिवाहिनीम् monkey troops.

Meaning

Gaja, Gavaksha, Gava, Sarabha, Gandhamadana stood protecting the monkey troops wandering all over.

YK-42-32Yuddha Kanda 42.32

ततःकोपपरीतात्मारावणोराक्षसेश्वरः । निर्याणंसर्वसैन्यानांद्रुतमाज्ञापयत्तदा ।।6.42.32।।

tatḥkopaparītātmārāvaṇorākṣaseśvarḥ | niryāṇṃsarvasainyānāṃdrutamājñāpayattadā ||6.42.32||

Translation

ततः thereafter, राक्षसेश्वरः Lord of Rakshasas, रावण Ravana, सर्वसैन्यानां all his forces, निर्याणं to depart, कोपपरीतात्मा overcome by fury, द्रुत to advance, आज्ञापयत्तदा ordered.

Meaning

Thereafter Ravana, the Lord of Rakshasas overcome by fury ordered all his forces to advance.

YK-42-33Yuddha Kanda 42.33

एतच्छ्रुत्वाततोवाक्यंरावणस्यमुखोद्गतम् । सहसाभीमनिर्घोषमुद्घुष्टंरजनीचरैः ।।6.42.33।।

etacchrutvātatovākyṃrāvaṇasyamukhodgatam | sahasābhīmanirghoṣamudghuṣṭṃrajanīcaraiḥ ||6.42.33||

Translation

रावणस्य from Ravana's, मुखोद्गतम् command issued from his mouth, एतच्छ्रुत्वा as soon as it was heard, ततो that, वाक्यं words. सहसा instantly, भीमनिर्घोषमुद्घुष्टं terrific roar, रजनीचरैः night rangers.

Meaning

Hearing the command issued from Ravana's mouth, immediately a terrific roar was raised by the night rangers.

YK-42-34Yuddha Kanda 42.34

ततःप्रचोदिताभेर्यश्चन्द्रपाण्डरपुष्कराः । हेमकोणाहताभीमाराक्षसानांसमन्ततः ।।6.42.34।।

tatḥpracoditābheryaścandrapāṇḍarapuṣkarāḥ | hemakoṇāhatābhīmārākṣasānāṃsamantatḥ ||6.42.34||

Translation

ततः then, प्रचोदिता shone, भेर्यश्चन्द्र like the moon, पाण्डरपुष्कराः white discs, भीमा terrific, राक्षसानां Rakshasas, हेमकोणाहता gold sticks.

Meaning

Then shone the white discs like the moon beaten by the Rakshasas with gold sticks making terrific sound.

YK-42-35Yuddha Kanda 42.35

विनेदुश्चमहाघोषाःशङ्खाःशतसहस्रशः । राक्षसानांसुघोराणांमुखमारुतपूरिताः ।।6.42.35।।

vineduścamahāghoṣāḥśaṅkhāḥśatasahasraśḥ | rākṣasānāṃsughorāṇāṃmukhamārutapūritāḥ ||6.42.35||

Translation

राक्षसानां Rakshasas, सुघोराणां terrific sounds, शतसहस्रशः hundred thousand, महाघोषाः loud noise, शङ्खाः with conchs, विनेदुश्च sonorous, मुखमारुत with wind from their mouth, पूरिताः blown.

Meaning

With hundred thousand Rakshasas blowing sonorous conchs, with the wind from their mouths, terrific noise arose.

YK-42-36Yuddha Kanda 42.36

तेबभुःशुभनीलाङ्गाःसशङ्खारजनीचराः । विद्युन्मण्डलसन्नद्धाःसबलाकाइवाम्बुदाः ।।6.42.36।।

tebabhuḥśubhanīlāṅgāḥsaśaṅkhārajanīcarāḥ | vidyunmaṇḍalasannaddhāḥsabalākāivāmbudāḥ ||6.42.36||

Translation

ते they, बभुः brilliant, शुभनीलाङ्गाः dark limbs, रजनीचराः night rangers, सशङ्खा with conches, इवाम्बुदाः like clouds, विद्युन्मण्डलसन्नद्धाः provided with armour with flashes of lightning, सबलाका accompanied by herons.

Meaning

The night rangers with their brilliant dark limbs, with conchs, were like dark clouds provided with armour with flashes of lightning and accompanied by herons.

YK-42-37Yuddha Kanda 42.37

निष्पतन्तिततःसैन्याहृष्टारावणचोदिताः । समयेपूर्यमाणस्यवेगाइवमहोदधेः ।।6.42.37।।

niṣpatantitatḥsainyāhṛṣṭārāvaṇacoditāḥ | samayepūryamāṇasyavegāivamahodadheḥ ||6.42.37||

Translation

रावणचोदिताः urged by Ravana, सैन्या army, ततः then, हृष्टा joyfully, निष्पतन्ति rushed forth, वेगा swiftly, महोदधेः great ocean, इव like, समये at the time of, पूर्यमाणस्य universal destruction.

Meaning

Urged by Ravana, the army then joyfully rushed forth swiftly like a great ocean at the time of universal destruction.

YK-42-38Yuddha Kanda 42.38

ततोवानरसैन्येनमुक्तोनादःसमन्ततः । मलयःपूरितोयेनससानुप्रस्थकन्दरः ।।6.42.38।।

tatovānarasainyenamuktonādḥsamantatḥ | malayḥpūritoyenasasānuprasthakandarḥ ||6.42.38||

Translation

ततो thereafter, वानरसैन्येन by the Vanara army, मुक्तो emitted, नादः sound, समन्ततः on all sides, पूरितो filled, मलयः Malaya mountain, येन by that, स that, सानुप्रस्थकन्दरः major and minor peaks and caves.

Meaning

Thereafter the Vanara army emitted a sound that filled all sides of Malaya Mountain, its major and minor caves.

YK-42-39Yuddha Kanda 42.39

शङ्खदुन्दुभिसंघुष्टःसिम्हनादस्तरस्विनाम् । पृथिवींचान्तरिक्षंचसागरंचैवनादयन् ।।6.42.39।।

śaṅkhadundubhisṃghuṣṭḥsimhanādastarasvinām | pṛthivīṃcāntarikṣṃcasāgarṃcaivanādayan ||6.42.39||

Translation

शङ्खदुन्दुभिसंघुष्टः blast of conchs and roll of drums, सिम्हनाद roar of lions, स्तरस्विनाम् and of Vanara and Rakshasa heroes, पृथिवीं earth, चान्तरिक्षंच to sky, सागरंचैव up to ocean, नादयन् resounded.

Meaning

By the blast of conchs and roll of drums, and roar of lions of Vanara and Rakshasa forces it resounded all over the earth, sky and up to the ocean.

YK-42-40Yuddha Kanda 42.40

गजानांबृंहितैःसार्धंहयानांहेषितैरपि । रथानांनेमिघोषैश्चरक्षसाम्वदनस्वनः ।।6.42.40 ।।

gajānāṃbṛṃhitaiḥsārdhṃhayānāṃheṣitairapi | rathānāṃnemighoṣaiścarakṣasāmvadanasvanḥ ||6.42.40 ||

Translation

गजानां of elephants, बृंहितैः trumpeting, सार्धंहयानां neighing of horses, हेषितैरपि clatter of wheels, रथानां of chariots, नेमिघोषैश्च shout of, रक्षसाम्, Rakshasas, वदनस्वनः resounded in the air.

Meaning

The trumpeting of the elephants, the neighing of horses, the clatter of the wheels of the chariots and the shout of Rakshasas resounded in the air.

YK-42-41Yuddha Kanda 42.41

एतस्मिन्नन्तरेघोरःसङ्ग्रामःसमवर्तत । रक्षसांवानराणांचयथादेवासुरेपुरा ।।6.42.41।।

etasminnantareghorḥsaṅgrāmḥsamavartata | rakṣasāṃvānarāṇāṃcayathādevāsurepurā ||6.42.41||

Translation

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे in the meantime, घोरः dreadful, सङ्ग्रामः conflict, समवर्तत all over, रक्षसां Rakshasas, वानराणांच between Vanaras, यथादेवासुरे like the conflict between Devas and asuras, पुरा earlier.

Meaning

In the meantime, dreadful conflict arose all over between Rakshasas and Vanaras, which was like the conflict between Devas and asuras earlier.

YK-42-42Yuddha Kanda 42.42

तेगदाभिःप्रदीप्ताभिःशक्तिशूलपरश्वधैः । निजघ्नुर्वानरान्घोराःकथयन्तःस्वविक्रमान् ।।6.42.42।।

tegadābhiḥpradīptābhiḥśaktiśūlaparaśvadhaiḥ | nijaghnurvānarānghorāḥkathayantḥsvavikramān ||6.42.42||

Translation

ते the Rakshasas, स्वविक्रमान् vaunting their own prowess, गदाभिः with maces, प्रदीप्ताभिः flaming शक्तिशूलपरश्वधैः with javelins, tridents and pikes, निजघ्नु fiercely struck, नरान्घोराः at Vanaras, कथयन्तः attacked.

Meaning

Vowing their own prowess, the Rakshasas began to strike the Vanaras with maces, flaming javelins, tridents, and pikes fiercely.

YK-42-43Yuddha Kanda 42.43

राजाजयतिसुग्रीवइतिशब्दोमहानभूत् । राजन्जयजयेत्युक्त्वास्वस्वनामकथान्ततः ।।6.42.43।।

rājājayatisugrīvaitiśabdomahānabhūt | rājanjayajayetyuktvāsvasvanāmakathāntatḥ ||6.42.43||

Translation

राजा king, जयति victory, सुग्रीव Sugriva, इति thus, शब्दो sound, महानभूत् be triumphant, राजन् king, जय victorious, जयेत्युक्त्वा saying victory to you, स्वस्वनामकथान्ततः arose war cry from the Vanaras.

Meaning

"May the vanara king,triumphant Sugriva be victorious", thus sounded the cry of vanaras in the battlefield.

YK-42-44Yuddha Kanda 42.44

तथावृक्षैर्महाकायाःपर्वताग्रैश्चवानराः । निजघ्नुस्तानिरक्षांसिनखैर्दन्तैश्चवेगिताः ।।6.42.44।।

tathāvṛkṣairmahākāyāḥparvatāgraiścavānarāḥ | nijaghnustānirakṣāṃsinakhairdantaiścavegitāḥ ||6.42.44||

Translation

तथा in the same manner, वृक्षैर्महाकायाः with trees, पर्वताग्रैश्च with mountain peaks, वानराः Vanaras, रक्षांसि at Rakshasas, नखैर्दन्तैश्च with nails and teeth, निजघ्नुस्तानि attacked, वेगिताः swiftly.

Meaning

Vanaras in the same manner attacked the Rakshasas, with trees and mountains, swiftly and with their nails and teeth.

YK-42-45Yuddha Kanda 42.45

राक्षसास्त्वपरेभीमाःप्राकारस्थामहीगतान् । भिन्दिपालैश्चखड्गैश्चशूलैश्चैवव्यदारयन् ।।6.42.45।।

rākṣasāstvaparebhīmāḥprākārasthāmahīgatān | bhindipālaiścakhaḍgaiścaśūlaiścaivavyadārayan ||6.42.45||

Translation

राक्षसास्त्वपरे redoubtable Rakshasas, प्राकारस्था standing on the walls, भीमाः dreadful, भिन्दिपालैश्च Bhindipalas (javelin like weapons), खड्गैश्च and swords, शूलैश्चैव with tridents, व्यदारयन् pierced.

Meaning

Standing on the walls, the redoubtable Rakshasas, pierced the Vanaras with swords, dreadful Bhindipalas.

YK-42-46Yuddha Kanda 42.46

वानराश्चापिसङ्क्रुद्धाःप्राकारस्थान्महीगताः । राक्षसान्पातयामासुःसमाप्लुत्यप्लवङ्गमाः ।।6.42.46।।

vānarāścāpisaṅkruddhāḥprākārasthānmahīgatāḥ | rākṣasānpātayāmāsuḥsamāplutyaplavaṅgamāḥ ||6.42.46||

Translation

प्राकारस्थान्महीगताः stationed on the boundary walls, वानराश्चापि Vanaras also, राक्षसान्पातयामासुः dragged down the Rakshasas, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, समाप्लुत्य jumping up.

Meaning

The vanaras jumping up dragged the Rakshasas stationed on the boundary wall down to the ground.

YK-42-47Yuddha Kanda 42.47

ससम्प्रहारस्तुमुलोमांसशोणितकर्दमः । रक्षसांवानराणांचसम्बभूवाद्भुतोपमाः।।6.42.47।।

sasamprahārastumulomāṃsaśoṇitakardamḥ | rakṣasāṃvānarāṇāṃcasambabhūvādbhutopamāḥ||6.42.47||

Translation

स that, सम्प्रहार conflict, रक्षसां of Rakshasas, वानराणांच and Vanaras, तमुलो intense, मांस flesh, शोणित blood, कर्दमः like mire, सम्बभूवा that happened, अद्भुतोपमाः was amazing.

Meaning

The conflict that happened between the Rakshasas and Vanaras was amazing and intense and left a mire of flesh and blood. ।। इत्यार्षेश्रीमद्वाल्मीकिरामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेद्विचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः ।। This is the end of the forty second sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
