YK-26-1Yuddha Kanda 26.1

तद्वचःपथ्यमक्लीबंसारणेनाभिभाषितम् । निशम्यरावणोराजाप्रत्यभाषतसारणम् ।।6.26.1।।

tadvacḥpathyamaklībṃsāraṇenābhibhāṣitam | niśamyarāvaṇorājāpratyabhāṣatasāraṇam ||6.26.1||

Translation

सारणेन: by Saarana, अभिभाषितम् truthful words spoken, पथ्यम् beneficial, अक्लीबम् without hesitation, तत् those, वचः words, निशम्य: perceiving, राजा: the king, रावणः Ravana, सारणम् to Saarana, प्रत्यभाषत: replied.

Meaning

Perceiving the truthful and beneficial words spoken by Saarana, without hesitation, King Ravana replied.

YK-26-2Yuddha Kanda 26.2

यदिमामभियुञ्जीरन्देवगन्धर्वदानवाः । नैवसीतांप्रदास्यामिसर्वलोकभयादपि ।।6.26.2।।

yadimāmabhiyuñjīrandevagandharvadānavāḥ | naivasītāṃpradāsyāmisarvalokabhayādapi ||6.26.2||

Translation

देवगन्धर्वदानवाः Devas, Gandharvas, Danavas, माम् me, अभियुञ्जीरन्: all put together attack me in war, सर्वलोकभयादपि: not even for the fear of the whole world, नैवप्रदास्यामि: will not surrender, सीताम् Sita.

Meaning

"Even if Devas, Gandharvas and Danavas put together attack me in war and not even for the fear of the whole world will I surrender Sita?"

YK-26-3Yuddha Kanda 26.3

त्वंतुसौम्यपरित्रस्तोहरिभिर्निर्जितोभृशम् । प्रतिप्रदानमद्यैवसीतायास्साधुमन्यसे ।।6.26.3।।

tvṃtusaumyaparitrastoharibhirnirjitobhṛśam | pratipradānamadyaivasītāyāssādhumanyase ||6.26.3||

Translation

सौम्य: noble, हरिभिः by Vanaras, भृशम् very much, र्निर्जितः vanquished, परित्रस्तः are frightened, त्वंतु: you are, अद्यैव: in this way, सीतायाः Sita, प्रतिप्रदानम् to surrender back, साधु: is good, मन्यसे: thinking.

Meaning

As you are vanquished by the noble Vanaras you are frightened like this and thinking it is good to surrender Sita.

YK-26-4-5Yuddha Kanda 26.4–5 (युग्मम्)

कोहिनामसपत्नोमांसमरेजेतुमर्हति । इत्युक्त्वापरुषंवाक्यंरावणोराक्षसाधिपः ।।6.26.4।। आरुरोहततश्रशीमान् प्रासादंहिमपाण्डुरम् । बहुतालसमुत्सेधंरावणोऽथदिदृक्ष्या ।।6.26.5।।

kohināmasapatnomāṃsamarejetumarhati | ityuktvāparuṣṃvākyṃrāvaṇorākṣasādhipḥ ||6.26.4|| ārurohatataśraśīmān prāsādṃhimapāṇḍuram | bahutālasamutsedhṃrāvaṇo'thadidṛkṣyā ||6.26.5||

Translation

माम् me, समरे: in war, कः what, सपत्नः adversary, जेतुम् can win, अर्हति: you ought to know, राक्षसाधिपः Rakshasa king, रावणः Ravana, श्रीमान् prosperous, रावणः Ravana, परुषम् harsh, वाक्यम् words, उक्त्वा: spoken, ततः like that, अथ: and then, दिदृक्ष्या: wishing to see, हिमपाण्डुरम् snow white palace, बहुतालसमुत्सेधम् which was of the height of many Palmira trees, प्रासादम् palace, आरुरोह: climbed up.

Meaning

"What adversary can win me in war? You ought to know this", said Ravana. Then Ravana, the king of Rakshasas having spoken that way went up to the snow white palace which was of the height of many Palmira trees wishing to see (the Vanaras).

YK-26-6Yuddha Kanda 26.6

ताभ्यांचराभ्यांसहितोरावणःक्रोधमूर्छितः । पश्यमानस्समुद्रंचपर्वतांश्चवनानिच ।।6.26.6।। ददर्शपृथिवीदेशंसुसम्पूर्णंप्लवङ्गमैः ।

tābhyāṃcarābhyāṃsahitorāvaṇḥkrodhamūrchitḥ | paśyamānassamudrṃcaparvatāṃścavanānica ||6.26.6|| dadarśapṛthivīdeśṃsusampūrṇṃplavaṅgamaiḥ |

Translation

ताभ्याम् with both of them (Suka and Saarana), चराभ्याम् the spies, सहितः along with, रावणः Ravana, क्रोधमूर्छितः deluded with anger, तंसमुद्रम् that sea, पर्वतांश्च: and mountains, वनाच: and woods, पश्यमानः started observing, प्लवङ्कमैः crowded with monkeys, सुसम्पूर्णम् totally, पृथिवीदेशम् the region of the earth.

Meaning

Deluded with anger Ravana along with both the spies observed the sea, the mountains and the woods crowded with monkeys in that region of the earth.

YK-26-7Yuddha Kanda 26.7

तदपारमसंख्ख्येयंवानराणांमहद्बलं । अलोक्यरावणोराजापरिपप्रच्छसारणम् ।।6.26.7।।

tadapāramasṃkhkhyeyṃvānarāṇāṃmahadbalṃ | alokyarāvaṇorājāparipapracchasāraṇam ||6.26.7||

Translation

राजा: king, रावणः Ravana, वानराणाम् Vanaras, आपारम् innumerable, असंख्ख्येयं: impossible to count, तत् that, महद्बलम् great army force, अलोक्यसारणम् looking at Saarana, परिपप्रच्छ: enquired further.

Meaning

Ravana seeing the innumerable army force of monkeys which was impossible to count again enquired looking at Saarana.

YK-26-8Yuddha Kanda 26.8

एषांवानरमुख्यानांकेशूराःकेमहाबलाः । केपूर्वमभिवर्तन्तेमहोत्साहास्समन्ततः ।।6.26.8।।

eṣāṃvānaramukhyānāṃkeśūrāḥkemahābalāḥ | kepūrvamabhivartantemahotsāhāssamantatḥ ||6.26.8||

Translation

एषाम् among them, वानराः Vanaras, मुख्या: foremost, के: who is, शूराः valiant, के: who, महाबलाः strong in prowess, महोत्साहाः most energetic, के: who, समन्ततः equals, पूर्वम् earlier, अभिवर्तन्ते: you may tell in order.

Meaning

"Who among the Vanaras is foremost, who is valiant, strong in prowess and most energetic? Who are their equals in the earlier war, you may tell in order?"

YK-26-9Yuddha Kanda 26.9

केषांशृणोतिसुग्रीवःकेवायूथपयूथपाः । सारणाचक्ष्वतत्त्वेनकेप्रधानाःप्लवङ्गमाः ।।6.26.9।।

keṣāṃśṛṇotisugrīvḥkevāyūthapayūthapāḥ | sāraṇācakṣvatattvenakepradhānāḥplavaṅgamāḥ ||6.26.9||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, केषाम् whose advice, शृणोति: listen, यूथपयूधपाः chief of the army, केवा: or who, प्लवङ्गमाः of the monkeys, के: who, प्रधानाः chief, सारण: Saarana, तत्त्वेन: truly, आचक्ष्व: show me.

Meaning

"Whose advice does Sugriva listen to? Who is the chief of the army of Vanaras? Saarana, I wish to know truly."

YK-26-10Yuddha Kanda 26.10

सारणोराक्षसेन्द्रस्यवचनंपरिपृच्छतः । आचचक्षेऽथमुख्यज्ञोमुख्यांस्तांस्तुवनौकसः ।।6.26.10।।

sāraṇorākṣasendrasyavacanṃparipṛcchatḥ | ācacakṣe'thamukhyajñomukhyāṃstāṃstuvanaukasḥ ||6.26.10||

Translation

अथ: thus, मुख्यज्ञः who know the important ones, सारणः Saarana, परिपृच्छतः being asked, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य: by the king of Rakshasas, मुख्यांस्तांस्तु: important there, वनौकसः of the wanderers in woods, वचनम् these words, आचचक्षे: speak out.

Meaning

Hearing the words asked by Rakshasendra, Saarana, who knew the important ones, thus spoke out about the important monkey leaders.

YK-26-11-13Yuddha Kanda 26.11–13 (त्रिकम्)

एषयोऽभिमुखोलङ्कांनर्दंस्तिष्ठतिवानरः । यूथपानांसहस्राणांशतेनपरिवारितः ।।6.26.11।। यस्यघोषेणमहतासप्राकारासतोरणा । लङ्काप्रवेपतेसर्वासशैलवनकानना ।।6.26.12।। सर्वशाखामृगेन्द्रस्यसुग्रीवस्यमहात्मनः । बलाग्रेतिष्ठतेवीरोनीलोनामैषयूथपः ।।6.26.13।।

eṣayo'bhimukholaṅkāṃnardṃstiṣṭhativānarḥ | yūthapānāṃsahasrāṇāṃśatenaparivāritḥ ||6.26.11|| yasyaghoṣeṇamahatāsaprākārāsatoraṇā | laṅkāpravepatesarvāsaśailavanakānanā ||6.26.12|| sarvaśākhāmṛgendrasyasugrīvasyamahātmanḥ | balāgretiṣṭhatevīronīlonāmaiṣayūthapḥ ||6.26.13||

Translation

यस्य: whose, महता: great, घोषेण: by his roar, सप्राकारा: the boundary, सतोरणा: that main arch way, सशैलवनकानना: with its mountains and woods, सर्वा: entire, लङ्कां: Lanka, प्रवेपते: trembling, यूथपानाम् commanders of troops, सहस्राणां: thousands of them, शतेन: hundred, परिवारितः surrounded, यः he who, एषः this, वानरः Vanaras, लङ्काम् अभिमुखः facing Lanka, नर्दन् voice, तिष्ठति: stands there, एषः this, नीलोनाम: called Nila, वीरः warrior, यूथपः troop, सर्वशाखामृगेन्द्रस्य: Lord of all troops of Vanaras, महात्मनः great one, सुग्रीवस्य: Sugriva's, बलाग्रे: in forefront, तिष्ठते: stands.

Meaning

"Who, surrounded by thousands of troops is roaring aloud facing Lanka, with whose roar entire Lanka with its boundary walls, archways, mountains and woods are trembling, that one who stands in the forefront of Sugriva the Lord of all Vanara troops is known as the great Nila."

YK-26-14-17Yuddha Kanda 26.14–17 (कलापकम्)

बाहूप्रगृह्ययःपद् भ्यांमहींगच्छतिवीर्यवान् । लङ्कामभिमुखःक्रोधादभीक्ष्णंचविजृम्भते ।।6.26.14।। गिरिशृङ्गप्रतीकाशःपद्मकिञ्जल्कसन्निभः । स्पोटयत्यभिसंरब्धोलाङ्गूलंचपुनःपुनः ।।6.26.15।। यस्यलाङ्गूलशब्देनस्वनन्तिप्रदिशोदश । एषवानरराजेनसुग्रीवेणाभिषेचितः ।।6.26.16।। यौवराज्येऽङ्गदोनामत्वामाह्वयतिसंयुगे ।।6.26.17।।

bāhūpragṛhyayḥpad bhyāṃmahīṃgacchativīryavān | laṅkāmabhimukhḥkrodhādabhīkṣṇṃcavijṛmbhate ||6.26.14|| giriśṛṅgapratīkāśḥpadmakiñjalkasannibhḥ | spoṭayatyabhisṃrabdholāṅgūlṃcapunḥpunḥ ||6.26.15|| yasyalāṅgūlaśabdenasvanantipradiśodaśa | eṣavānararājenasugrīveṇābhiṣecitḥ ||6.26.16|| yauvarājye'ṅgadonāmatvāmāhvayatisṃyuge ||6.26.17||

Translation

वीर्यवान् valiant one, यः he who, बाहू: arms, प्रगृह्य: lifting, पद् भ्याम् with his feet, महीम् on the earth, गच्छति: walking, लङ्काम् at Lanka, अभिमुखः facing towards, क्रोधात् angrily, अभीक्षम् seeing, विजृम्भते: expand s, गिरिशृङ्गप्रतीकाशः who is like a mountain peak in form, पद्मकींजल्कसन्निभः like the colour of lotus filament, अतिसंरब्धः highly excited, पुनःपुनः again and again, लाङ्गूलम् tail, स्पोटयति: hitting with, यस्य: his, लाङ्गूलशब्देन: the sound produced by the tail, दश: ten, प्रदिशः directions, स्वनन्ति: resounding, एषः this, वानरराजेन: Vanara leader, सुग्रीवेण: by Sugriva, अभिषेचित: was crowned, अङ्गदोनाम: by name Angada, यौवराज्यः crowned prince, संयुगे: war with you, आह्वयति: challenging you.

Meaning

"The valiant one who has lifted his arms up and stands on the earth enraged facing Lanka, a highly excited one who is tall and expanded like a mountain peak in form and colour of lotus filament who is hitting his tail again and again on the earth and making noise with his tail, which is resounding in ten directions is Vanara leader by name Angada who has been crowned by Sugriva. This crowned prince is challenging to have war with you."

YK-26-18Yuddha Kanda 26.18

वालिनस्सदृशःपुत्रस्सुग्रीवस्यसदाप्रियः । राघवार्थेपराक्रान्तश्शक्रार्थेवरुणोयथा ।।6.26.18।।

vālinassadṛśḥputrassugrīvasyasadāpriyḥ | rāghavārtheparākrāntaśśakrārthevaruṇoyathā ||6.26.18||

Translation

वालिनः Vali's, सदृशः similar, पुत्रः son, सदा: ever, सुग्रीवस्य: Sugriva's, प्रियः beloved, शक्रार्थे: for the cause of Indra, वरुणोयथा: like Varuna, राघवार्थे: for the cause of Rama, पराक्रान्तः ready to show his valour.

Meaning

"He is the son of Vali and is similar to him and is ever beloved of Sugriva. Jus t like Varuna fights for the cause of Indra, he is ready to show his valour for the cause of Rama."

YK-26-19Yuddha Kanda 26.19

एतस्यसामतिस्सर्वायद्दृष्टाजनकात्मजा । हनूमतावेगवताराघवस्यहितैषिणा ।।6.26.19।।

etasyasāmatissarvāyaddṛṣṭājanakātmajā | hanūmatāvegavatārāghavasyahitaiṣiṇā ||6.26.19||

Translation

राघवस्य: Raghava's, हितैषिणा: well wisher, वेगवता: of great speed, हनूमता: Hanuman, जनकात्मजा: Janaka's daughter, दृष्टाइतियत् had come to see, सासर्वा: for all that, एतस्य: his, मतिः intellect.

Meaning

"He is a well wisher of Raghava, called Hanuman. He had come to see Janaka's daughter, and his intellect is the cause for all that."

YK-26-20Yuddha Kanda 26.20

बहूनिवानरेन्द्राणामेषयूथानिवीर्यवान् । परिगृह्याभियातित्वांस्वेनानीकेनमर्दितुम् ।।6.26.20।।

bahūnivānarendrāṇāmeṣayūthānivīryavān | parigṛhyābhiyātitvāṃsvenānīkenamarditum ||6.26.20||

Translation

वीर्यवान् a valiant one, एषः this, वानरेन्द्राणाम् Vanara king's, बहूनि: many, यूथानि: troops, परिगृह्य: taking, त्वाम् you, स्वेन: himself, अनीकेन: several (battalions) मर्दितुम्: in order to crush, अभियाति: marching.

Meaning

"This valiant Vanara himself with many troops and several battalions of the Vanara king is marching to crush you."

YK-26-21Yuddha Kanda 26.21

अनुवालिसुतस्यापिबलेनमहताऽवृतः । वीरस्तिष्ठतिसङ्ग्रामेसेतुहेतुरयंनलः ।।6.26.21।।

anuvālisutasyāpibalenamahatā'vṛtḥ | vīrastiṣṭhatisaṅgrāmesetuheturayṃnalḥ ||6.26.21||

Translation

अनुवालिसुतस्य: behind the son of Vali, महता: huge, बलेन: army force, वृतः surrounded by, सङ्ग्रामे: in war, वीरः heroic, सेतुहेतुः for the cause of construction of bridge, अयम् this, नलः Nila, तिष्ठति: is standing.

Meaning

"Behind this Vali's son is Nala surrounded by a huge army force. He is heroic in war. He is the cause of construction of the bridge."

YK-26-22-24Yuddha Kanda 26.22–24 (त्रिकम्)

येतुविष्टभ्यगात्राणिक्ष्वेलयन्तिनदन्तिच । उत्थायचविजृम्भन्तेक्रोधेनहरिपुङ्गवाः ।।6.26.22।। एतेदुष्प्रसहाघोराश्चण्डाश्चण्डपराक्रमाः । अष्टौशतसहस्राणिदशकोटिशतानिच ।।6.26.23।। यएनमनुगच्छन्तिवीराश्चन्दनवासिनः । एषैवाशंसतेलङ्कांस्वेनानीकेनमर्दितुम् ।।6.26.24।।

yetuviṣṭabhyagātrāṇikṣvelayantinadantica | utthāyacavijṛmbhantekrodhenaharipuṅgavāḥ ||6.26.22|| eteduṣprasahāghorāścaṇḍāścaṇḍaparākramāḥ | aṣṭauśatasahasrāṇidaśakoṭiśatānica ||6.26.23|| yaenamanugacchantivīrāścandanavāsinḥ | eṣaivāśṃsatelaṅkāṃsvenānīkenamarditum ||6.26.24||

Translation

ये: those who are (following him), हरिपुङ्ग: Vanara leader, गात्राणि: their limbs, विष्टभ्य: staying firmly, क्ष्वेलयन्ति: tossing their limbs, नदन्तिच: and roaring, क्रोधेन: in anger, उत्थाय: getting up, विजृम्भन्ते: stretching, चन्दनवासिनः in the sandalwood forest, अष्टोशतसहास्राणि: one thousand and eight, दशकोटिशतानिच: ten hundred crores, ये: of, वीराः warriors, एनम् these, अनुगच्छन्ति: are following, एते: with them, दुष्प्रसहाः unassailable, चण्डाः cruel, घोराः dreadful, चण्डपराक्रमाः of terrible prowess, एषैव: alone, स्वेन: he, अनीकेन: army, लङ्काम् Lanka, मर्दितुम् crush, आशंसते: wishing to do.

Meaning

"Ten hundred crores one lakh and eight of these warriors who are unassailable, cruel, dreadful and terrible prowess are following the Vanara leader. They have made their body stiff, tossing their limbs, and are roaring in anger. They are standing up and stretching their limbs in sandalwood forest. Nala the leader alone is wishing to crush the army and Lanka."

YK-26-25-26Yuddha Kanda 26.25–26 (युग्मम्)

श्वेतोरजतसङ्काशश्चपलोभीमविक्रमः । बुद्धिमान्वानरश्शूरस्त्रिषुलोकेषुविश्रुतः ।।6.26.25।। तूर्णंसुग्रीवमागम्यपुनर्गच्छतिसत्वरः । विभजन्वानरींसेनामनीकानिप्रहर्षयन् ।।6.26.26।।

śvetorajatasaṅkāśaścapalobhīmavikramḥ | buddhimānvānaraśśūrastriṣulokeṣuviśrutḥ ||6.26.25|| tūrṇṃsugrīvamāgamyapunargacchatisatvarḥ | vibhajanvānarīṃsenāmanīkānipraharṣayan ||6.26.26||

Translation

रजतसङ्काशं: resembles silver in colour, चपलः agile, भीमविक्रयः of terrific prowess, बुद्धिमान् intelligent one, वीरः warrior, त्रिषुलोकेषु: in the three worlds, विश्रुतः well known, श्वेतःसवानरः Vanara by name Swetha, तूर्णम् quickly, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, आगम्य: coming towards, वानरीम् to the Vanaras, सेनाम् army, विभजन् dividing, अनीकानि: the forces, प्रहर्षयन् delightfully, सत्वरः swiftly, पुनः again, गच्छति: proceeding.

Meaning

"One who resembles silver in colour is Swetha. He is an intelligent one with terrific prowess, and a warrior is well known in the three worlds. Swetha is quickly coming towards Sugriva, dividing the Vanara army forces and again proceeding swiftly."

YK-26-27-30Yuddha Kanda 26.27–30 (कलापकम्)

यःपुरागोमतीतीरेरम्यंपर्येतिपर्वतम् । नाम्नासङ्कोचनोनामनानानगयुतोगिरिः ।।6.26.27।। तत्रराज्यंप्रशास्त्येषकुमुदोनामयूथपः । योऽसौशतसहस्राणिसहस्रंपरिकर्षति ।।6.26.28।। यस्यवालाबहुव्यामादीर्घलाङ्गूलमाश्रिता । ताम्रापीतास्सीताश्श्वेताःप्रकीर्णाघोरदर्शना ।।6.26.29।। अदीनोरोषणश्चण्डस्सङ्ग्राममभिकाङ् क्षति । एषोऽप्याशंसतेलङ्कांस्वेनानीकेनमर्दितुम् ।।6.26.30।।

yḥpurāgomatītīreramyṃparyetiparvatam | nāmnāsaṅkocanonāmanānānagayutogiriḥ ||6.26.27|| tatrarājyṃpraśāstyeṣakumudonāmayūthapḥ | yo'sauśatasahasrāṇisahasrṃparikarṣati ||6.26.28|| yasyavālābahuvyāmādīrghalāṅgūlamāśritā | tāmrāpītāssītāśśvetāḥprakīrṇāghoradarśanā ||6.26.29|| adīnoroṣaṇaścaṇḍassaṅgrāmamabhikāṅ kṣati | eṣo'pyāśṃsatelaṅkāṃsvenānīkenamarditum ||6.26.30||

Translation

यः he who, पुरा: earlier, गोमतीतीरे: on the banks of Gomathi, नाम्ना: called, संकोचनो: Sankochana, नानानगयुतः collection of peaks, गिरिः of mountains, रम्यम् delightful, पर्वतम् mountains, पर्येति: extending far, एषोऽपि: this also, कुमुदोनाम: named Kumuda, यूथपः troops, तत्र: there, राज्यम् kingdom, प्रशास्ति: ruled, यः he who, शतसहस्राणि: hundred thousand, परिकर्षति: dragging out, यस्य: their, वाला: hair, बहुव्यामा: very long, दीर्घलाङ्गूलम् with long hairy tails, ताम्राः copper coloured, पीताः yellow, सिताः fastened, श्वेताः white, प्रकीर्णाः scattered, घोरदर्शनाः frightening to see, अदीनः not having any pity, चण्डः dreadful, वानरः Vanara, सङ्ग्रामम् war, अभिकाङ् क्षति: is aspiring, एषैवाशंसते: he alone wishes, स्वेनानीकेन: with his own army, लङ्काम् Lanka, मर्दितुम् to crush.

Meaning

"He who was residing on the banks of Gomathi earlier, which was delightful with a range of mountain peaks extending far, was ruling this kingdom from the mountain Sankochana. He is Kumuda by name. He drags his troops delightfully the ones with hairy long tails, some of coppery red colour, some yellow and some with white tails. Such a Vanara called Kumuda is dragging hundred thousand Vanaras, some fastened and some scattered. He is one who has no pity and is frightening to look at. Single handed he is aspiring to crush Lanka with its army in war."

YK-26-31-33Yuddha Kanda 26.31–33 (त्रिकम्)

यस्त्वेषसिंहसङ्काशःकपिलोदीर्घलोचनः । निभृतःप्रेक्षतेलङ्कांदिधक्षन्निवचक्षुषा ।।6.26.31।। विन्ध्यंकृष्णगिरिंसह्यंपर्वतंचसुदर्शनम् । राजन्सततमध्यास्तेरम्भोनामयूथपः ।।6.26.32।। शतंशतसहास्राणांत्रिंशच्चहरिपुङ्गवाः । यमेतेवानराश्शूराश्चण्डाश्चण्डपराक्रमाः ।।6.26.33।। परिवार्यानुगच्छन्तिलङ्कांमर्दितुमोजसा ।

Translation

राजन् O king, सिंहसङ्काशः like a lion, कपिलः tawny coloured, दीर्घलोचन: long eyes, यः he who, निभृतः one who is steady, चक्षुषा: eyes, दिधक्षन्निव: as if burning with his looks, लङ्काम् Lanka, प्रेक्षते: looks, शतसहस्राणाम् hundred thousand, शतम् hundred, त्रिंशच्च: thirty, हरिपुङ्गवाः Vanara warriors, घोराः dreadful in form, चण्डपराक्रमाः of terrific valour, वानराः Vanaras, यान्तम् marching, यम् those, परिवार्य: with followers, ओजसा: with energy, लङ्काम् Lanka, मर्दितुम् to crush, अनुगच्छन्ति: following, सः he, रम्भोनाम: called Rambha, यूथपः leader of the troop, विन्ध्यं: at Vindhya mountain, कृष्णगिरिम् Krishnagiri, सह्यां: Sahaya, पर्वतम् mountain, सुदर्शनम् Sudarsanam, सततम् always, आध्यास्ते: rules

Meaning

"O king! He who is like a lion, of tawny colour with long hair, who is steady, who is looking at Lanka as though he is going to burn with his eyes, he who is followed by thirty hundred thousand Vanara warriors of dreadful form and terrific valour are marching to crush Lanka, is called Rambha the leader of the troop. He was always ruling over Vindhya, Krishnagiri and Sudarsanam mountains."

YK-26-34-36Yuddha Kanda 26.34–36 (त्रिकम्)

Translation

राजन्: O king!, कर्णौ: ears, विवृणुते: making stiff, पुनःपुनः again and again, जृम्भतेच: is yawning, मृत्योः even death, नतुसंविजते: will not be afraid of, युद्धात् from war, नचप्रधावति: not go back, रोषेण: reacts in anger, प्रकम्पतेच: violently, पुनः again, तिर्यक् obliquely, ईक्षते: seeing, लाह्गूलम् tail, पस्यन: looking at, क्ष्वेळते: leaps, महाबलः very strong, एषः this, शरभोनाम: called Sarabha, यूतपः troop leader, महाजवो: very fast, वीतभयः devoid of fear, सततम् ever, रम्यम् in delight, साल्वेयंपर्वतम् Salveya mountain.

Meaning

"Oh! king of Rakshasas! He who has made his ears stiff, yawning again and again, who is not afraid of death, who will not go back from war, who is looking obliquely and seeing his tail reacting in anger violently and roaring like a lion is a very strong leader called Sarabha. He is a very fast one, a leader of troops, ever in delight. He lives in Salveya mountain."

YK-26-37Yuddha Kanda 26.37

एतस्यबलिनस्सर्वेविहारानामयूथपाः । राजन् शतसहस्राणिचत्वारिंशस्तथैवच ।।6.26.37।।

etasyabalinassarvevihārānāmayūthapāḥ | rājan śatasahasrāṇicatvāriṃśastathaivaca ||6.26.37||

Translation

राजन् king!, एतस्य: under him, शतसहस्राणि: hundred thousand, तथैवच: so also, चत्वारिंशत् forty lakhs, सर्वे: all, विहारःनाम: known as Viharas, यूथपाः warriors, बलिन: strong ones.

Meaning

"O King! Under him are forty lakhs of strong warriors known as Viharas."

YK-26-38-40Yuddha Kanda 26.38–40 (त्रिकम्)

यस्तुमेघइवाकाशंमहानावृत्यतिष्ठति । मध्येवानरवीराणांसूराणामिववासवः ।।6.26.38।। भेरीणामिवसन्नादोयस्यैषश्रूयतेमहान् । घोषश्शाखामृगेन्द्राणांसङ्ग्राममभिकाङ्क्षिताम् ।।6.26.39।। एषपर्वतमध्यास्तेपारियात्रमनुत्तमम् । युद्धेदुष्प्रसहोनित्यंपनसोनामयूथपः ।।6.26.40।।

yastumeghaivākāśṃmahānāvṛtyatiṣṭhati | madhyevānaravīrāṇāṃsūrāṇāmivavāsavḥ ||6.26.38|| bherīṇāmivasannādoyasyaiṣaśrūyatemahān | ghoṣaśśākhāmṛgendrāṇāṃsaṅgrāmamabhikāṅkṣitām ||6.26.39|| eṣaparvatamadhyāstepāriyātramanuttamam | yuddheduṣprasahonityṃpanasonāmayūthapḥ ||6.26.40||

Translation

यः he who, महान् huge, मेघइव: like cloud, आकाशम् sky, अवृत्य: covering, सुराणाम् in the midst of Suras, वासव इव: like Indra, वानरवीराणाम् among Vanara leaders, मध्ये: midst, तिष्ठति: stands, सङ्ग्रामम् war, अभिकाङ्क्षिताम् eager to wage war, यस्येव: his, शाखामृगेन्द्राणाम् among the, महान: great, घोषः roar, भेरीणाम् drums, सन्नाद: इव: like the beating, श्रूयते: sounds, एषः this, नित्यम् always, युद्धे: in war, दुष्प्रसहः difficult to resist in war, पनसोनाम: known as Panasa, यूथपः warrior, अनुत्तमम् very great, पारियात्रम् Paariyatra, अध्यास्ते: resides.

Meaning

"He who is huge like a cloud covering the sky, roaring like a lion making noise like the beating of the drums, who is eager to wage war, who stands amid Vanaras like Indra in the midst of suras, who is ever difficult to resist in war is known as Panasa is a great warrior. He resides in the Paariyatra mountains."

YK-26-41Yuddha Kanda 26.41

एनंशतसहस्राणांशतार्धंपर्युपासते । यूथपायूथपश्रेष्ठंयेषांयूथानिभागशः ।।6.26.41।।

enṃśatasahasrāṇāṃśatārdhṃparyupāsate | yūthapāyūthapaśreṣṭhṃyeṣāṃyūthānibhāgaśḥ ||6.26.41||

Translation

येषाम् under him, यूथानि: army, भागशः separate units, शतसहस्राणाम् शतार्धम् fifty lakhs, यूथपश्रेष्ठम् best of warriors, एनम् this way, पर्युपासते: stay near.

Meaning

"Fifty lakhs of best warriors are under him. They are in separate units."

YK-26-42-44Yuddha Kanda 26.42–44 (त्रिकम्)

यस्तुभीमांप्रवल्गन्तींचमूंतिष्ठतिशोभयन् । स्थितांतीरेसमुद्रस्यद्वितीयइवसागरः ।।6.26.42।। एषदर्दरसङ्काशोविनतोनामयूथपः । पिबंश्चरतिपर्णासांनदीनामुत्तमांनदीम् ।।6.26.43।। षष्टिश्शतसहस्राणिबलमस्यप्लवङ्गमाः ।।6.26.44।।

yastubhīmāṃpravalgantīṃcamūṃtiṣṭhatiśobhayan | sthitāṃtīresamudrasyadvitīyaivasāgarḥ ||6.26.42|| eṣadardarasaṅkāśovinatonāmayūthapḥ | pibṃścaratiparṇāsāṃnadīnāmuttamāṃnadīm ||6.26.43|| ṣaṣṭiśśatasahasrāṇibalamasyaplavaṅgamāḥ ||6.26.44||

Translation

यः he who, समुद्रस्य: ocean's, तीरे: shore, द्वितीयः second, सागरःइव: like the ocean, स्थिताम् stationed, भीमाम् terrifying, प्रवल्गन्तीम् fluttering, चमूम् division of army, शोभयन् charm, तिष्ठतिएषः in that way stationed, दुर्दरसङ्काशः resembling Dardura mountain, विनतोनाम: known as Vinata, यूथपः leader, यः he who, नदीनाम् among the rivers, उत्तमाम् best, पर्णासां: Parnasa, नदीम् river, पिबन् drinking, चरति: goes about, षष्टिः sixty, शतसहस्राणि: hundred thousand, प्लवङ्गमाः Vanaras, अस्यबलम् his army force.

Meaning

"He who is stationed there on the shore like a second sea fluttering the division of army and terrifying is known as Vinata. He is a leader who goes about drinking the waters of the Parnasa, the best among the rivers. He has a sixty hundred thousand army force of Vanaras under him."

YK-26-45Yuddha Kanda 26.45

त्वामाह्वयतियुद्धायक्रोधनोनामयूधपः । विक्रान्ताबलवन्तश्चयथायूथानिभागशः ।।6.26.45।।

tvāmāhvayatiyuddhāyakrodhanonāmayūdhapḥ | vikrāntābalavantaścayathāyūthānibhāgaśḥ ||6.26.45||

Translation

विक्रान्ताः valiant, बलवन्तश्च: powerful, यूथानि: troop leaders, यथा: so also, भागशः units, क्रोधनोनाम: called Krodhana, वानरः Vanara, त्वाम् you, युद्धाय: for combat, आह्वयति: is challenging.

Meaning

"The valiant and powerful troop leaders are a part of units of the army under Vanara called Krodhana. He is challenging you for combat."

YK-26-46Yuddha Kanda 26.46

यस्तुगैरिकवर्णाभंवपुःपुष्यतिवानरः । अवमत्यसदासर्वान्वानरान्बलदर्पितान् ।।6.26.46।। गवयोनामतेजस्वीत्वांक्रोधादभिवर्तते ।

yastugairikavarṇābhṃvapuḥpuṣyativānarḥ | avamatyasadāsarvānvānarānbaladarpitān ||6.26.46|| gavayonāmatejasvītvāṃkrodhādabhivartate |

Translation

यः he who, वानरः Vanara, गैरिकवर्णाभम् of orange body in colour, वपुः of hand some form, पुष्यति: nourishes, सदा: ever, बलदर्पितान् proud of his strength, तेजस्वी: glorious one, गवयोनाम: known as Gavaya, सर्वान् all, वानरान् Vanaras, अवमत्य: with disregard, क्रोधात् in anger, त्वाम् you अभिवर्तते: coming towards.

Meaning

"He who is of an orange colour body of hand some form, who nourishes it ever and who is proud of his strength, a glorious one known as Gava ya is coming towards you angrily with disregard for Vanaras."

YK-26-47Yuddha Kanda 26.47

एनंशतसहस्राणिसप्ततिःपर्युपासते । एषैवाशंसतेलङ्कांस्वेनानीकेनमर्दितुम् ।।6.26.47।।

enṃśatasahasrāṇisaptatiḥparyupāsate | eṣaivāśṃsatelaṅkāṃsvenānīkenamarditum ||6.26.47||

Translation

एनम् under him, सप्ततिः seventy, शतसहस्राणि: lakhs, पर्युपासते: at his command, एषैव: he, स्वेन: alone, single handed, अनीकेन: army force, लङ्काम् Lanka, मर्दितुम् to crush, आशंसते: aspiring.

Meaning

"He has seventy lakhs under his command. Single handed with army force is aspiring to crush Lanka."

YK-26-48Yuddha Kanda 26.48

एतेदुष्प्रसहाघोराबलिनःकामरूपिणः । यूथपायूथपश्रेष्ठामेषांयूथानिभागशः ।।6.26.48।।

eteduṣprasahāghorābalinḥkāmarūpiṇḥ | yūthapāyūthapaśreṣṭhāmeṣāṃyūthānibhāgaśḥ ||6.26.48||

Translation

बलिनः strong, कामरूपिणः those who can change form at will, ते: these, घोराः fierce, यूथपाः troops, यूथपश्रेष्ठाः best of the monkeys, दुष्प्रसहाः difficult to resist, येषाम् them, यूथानि: army force, भागशः units.

Meaning

"They are difficult to resist, can change their form at will and are strong. These fierce troops, the best of the monkeys, have their units of army force." ।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेषड्विंशस्सर्गः ।। This is the end of the twenty sixth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
