YK-24-1Yuddha Kanda 24.1

सावीरसमितीराज्ञाविरराजव्यवस्थिता । शशिनाशुभनक्षत्रापौर्णमासीवशारदी ।।6.24.1।।

sāvīrasamitīrājñāvirarājavyavasthitā | śaśināśubhanakṣatrāpaurṇamāsīvaśāradī ||6.24.1||

Translation

व्यवस्थिता settled, सा that, वीरसमितिः army of Vanaras, राज्ञा by the king (Rama), शुभनक्षत्रा with auspicious stars, शारदी autumn, पौर्णमासी full moon, शशिनाइव like the moon, विरराज shone.

Meaning

The army of Vanaras settled that way by Rama's command shone like the autumnal full moon with auspicious stars.

YK-24-2Yuddha Kanda 24.2

प्रचचालचवेगेनत्रस्ताचैववसुन्धरा । पीड्यमानाबलौघेनतेनसागरवर्चसा ।।6.24.2।।

pracacālacavegenatrastācaivavasundharā | pīḍyamānābalaughenatenasāgaravarcasā ||6.24.2||

Translation

सागरवर्चसा like the ocean, तेन by that, बलौघेन the army, पीड्यमाना tormented by, वसुन्धरा the earth, वेगेन swift movement, त्रस्ता frightened, प्रचचाल started shaking.

Meaning

The frightened army (of Vanaras) that was like a tormented ocean started moving swiftly, shaking like the earth.

YK-24-3Yuddha Kanda 24.3

ततश्शुश्रुवुराक्रुष्टंलङ्कायांकाननौकसः । भेरीमृदङ्गसङ्घुष्टंतुमुलंरोमहर्षणम् ।।6.24.3।।

tataśśuśruvurākruṣṭṃlaṅkāyāṃkānanaukasḥ | bherīmṛdaṅgasaṅghuṣṭṃtumulṃromaharṣaṇam ||6.24.3||

Translation

ततः there upon, काननौकसः army having settled, लङ्कायां from Lanka, आक्रुष्टम् terrific, तुमुलम् tumultuous, रेमहर्षणम् that which causes horripilation, भेरीमृदङ्गसङ्घुष्टम् drums and percussion instruments, शुश्रुवुः came to hear.

Meaning

There upon having settled down, the army hordes heard from Lanka terrific and tumultuous noise of drums and percussion instruments that caused horripilation.

YK-24-4Yuddha Kanda 24.4

बभूवुस्तेनघोषेणसंहृष्टाहरियूथपाः । अमृष्यमाणास्तंघोषंविनेदुर्घोषवत्तरम् ।।6.24.4।।

babhūvustenaghoṣeṇasṃhṛṣṭāhariyūthapāḥ | amṛṣyamāṇāstṃghoṣṃvinedurghoṣavattaram ||6.24.4||

Translation

हरियूथपाः leaders of Vanara troops, तेन of that (Lanka), घोषेण by the loud noises, संहृष्टाः felt very happy, बभूवुः became, तम् that which, घोषम् noise, अमृष्यमाणाः unable to tolerate, घोषवत्तरम् louder than the noise, विनेदुः roared in joy.

Meaning

The leaders of Vanara troops felt very happy at the noise from (Lanka) which they were unable to tolerate and roared louder (than that in joy).

YK-24-5Yuddha Kanda 24.5

राक्षसास्तुप्लवङ्गानांशुश्रुवुश्चाऽपिगर्जितम् । नर्दतामिवदृप्तानांमेघानामम्बरेस्वनम् ।।6.24.5।।

rākṣasāstuplavaṅgānāṃśuśruvuścā'pigarjitam | nardatāmivadṛptānāṃmeghānāmambaresvanam ||6.24.5||

Translation

राक्षसाःअपि even the Rakshasas, दृप्तानाम् in their pride, प्लवङ्गनाम् the Vanaras, अम्बरे in the sky, नर्दताम् bellowing, मेघानाम् clouds, स्वनम् इव like the sound, गर्जितम् roared, शुश्रुवुःच heard.

Meaning

Even the Rakshasas heard the roaring of Vanaras in their pride that was bellowing like that of clouds in the sky.

YK-24-6Yuddha Kanda 24.6

दृष्टवादाशरथिर्लङ्कांचित्रध्वजपताकिनीम् । जगाममनसासीतंदूयमानेनचेतसा ।।6.24.6।।

dṛṣṭavādāśarathirlaṅkāṃcitradhvajapatākinīm | jagāmamanasāsītṃdūyamānenacetasā ||6.24.6||

Translation

दाशरधिः Rama the son of Dasaratha, चित्रध्वजपताकिनीम् adored with colourful flags and posts, लङ्काम् of Lanka, दृष्टवा seeing, दूयमानेन afflicted by sorrow, चेतसा thinking, सीताम् of Sita, मनसा in his mind, जगाम went about.

Meaning

Afflicted by sorrow upon seeing the colourful flags and posts of Lanka even Rama's thoughts went about thinking of Sita.

YK-24-7Yuddha Kanda 24.7

अत्रसामृगशाबाक्षीरावणेनोपरुध्यते । अभिभूताग्रहेणेवलोहिताङ्गेनरोहिणी ।।6.24.7।।

atrasāmṛgaśābākṣīrāvaṇenoparudhyate | abhibhūtāgraheṇevalohitāṅgenarohiṇī ||6.24.7||

Translation

मृगशाबाक्षी doveeyed, सा she, लोहिताङ्गेन red colour bodied planet (Mars), ग्रहेणव caught by, अभिभूता conquered, रोहिणीव like Rohini, रावणेन by Ravana, अत्र there, उपरुध्यते obstructed.

Meaning

The doveeyed Sita is obstructed by Ravana there (at Lanka) like the planet Rohini is caught by the red coloured planet (Mars).

YK-24-8Yuddha Kanda 24.8

दीर्घमुष्णंचनिश्वस्यसमुद्वीक्ष्यचलक्ष्मणम् । उवाचवचनंवीरस्तत्कालहितमात्मनः ।।6.24.8।।

dīrghamuṣṇṃcaniśvasyasamudvīkṣyacalakṣmaṇam | uvācavacanṃvīrastatkālahitamātmanḥ ||6.24.8||

Translation

वीरः heroic one, दीर्घम् long, उष्णंच hot, निश्वस्य heaving, लक्ष्मणम् to Lakshmana, समुद्वीक्ष्यच and looking at, आत्मनः himself, तात्कालहितम् that which is good at that time, वचनम् words, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

Heroic Rama heaving hot and long breath looking at Lakshmana spoke these words that were good for him at that time.

YK-24-9Yuddha Kanda 24.9

आलिखन्तीमिवाकाशमुत्थितांपश्यलक्ष्मण । मनसेवकृतांलङ्कांनगाग्रेविश्वकर्मणा ।।6.24.9।।

ālikhantīmivākāśamutthitāṃpaśyalakṣmaṇa | manasevakṛtāṃlaṅkāṃnagāgreviśvakarmaṇā ||6.24.9||

Translation

लक्ष्मण Lakshmana, विश्वकर्मणा by Vishwakarma, नगाग्रे on top of the mountain, मनसा with mind, कृताम् इव like the one created, उत्थिताम् elevated, आकाशम् sky, आलिखन्तीम् as if clasping, लङ्काम् Lanka, पश्य you may see.

Meaning

"Lakshmana, you may see the city of Lanka elevated on top of the mountain as though clasping the sky, like the one created in the mind of Vishwakarma."

YK-24-10Yuddha Kanda 24.10

विमानैर्बहुभिर्लङ्कासङ्कीर्णाभुविराजते । विष्णोःपदमिवाकाशंछादितंपाण्डुभिर्घनैः ।।6.24.10।।

vimānairbahubhirlaṅkāsaṅkīrṇābhuvirājate | viṣṇoḥpadamivākāśṃchāditṃpāṇḍubhirghanaiḥ ||6.24.10||

Translation

भुवि existing, राजते appears splendid, लङ्का Lanka, बहुभि with many, विमानैः tall skyscrapers, सङ्कीर्णा mass of, विष्णोः of Vishnu's, पदम् path, आकाशम् the sky, पाण्डुभिः with white, घनैः clouds, छादितम् इव as if covered.

Meaning

"This Lanka appears splendid with a mass of skyscrapers like white clouds covering the path of Vishnu in the sky."

YK-24-11Yuddha Kanda 24.11

पुष्पितैश्शोभितालङ्कावनैश्चत्ररथोपमैः । नानापतगसङ्घुष्टै: फलपुष्पोपगैश्शुभैः ।।6.24.11।।

puṣpitaiśśobhitālaṅkāvanaiścatrarathopamaiḥ | nānāpatagasaṅghuṣṭai: phalapuṣpopagaiśśubhaiḥ ||6.24.11||

Translation

लङ्का Lanka, नानापतगसङ्घुष्टै: with flocks of bird of several kinds singing sweetly फलपुष्पोपगैः with charming flowers and fruits, शुभैः auspicious (gardens), पुष्पितैः decorated with flowers, चित्ररथोपमैः like the Chaitraratha, वनैः gardens, शोभिता delighting.

Meaning

"Lanka is filled with flocks of birds of several kinds singing sweetly, the gardens with charming flowers and fruits are delighting like auspicious gardens of Chaitrara, the garden of Kubera, the god of wealth."

YK-24-12Yuddha Kanda 24.12

पश्यमत्तविहाङ्गानिप्रलीनभ्रमराणिच । कोकिलाकुलषण्डानिदोधवीतिशिवोऽनिलः ।।6.24.12।।

paśyamattavihāṅgānipralīnabhramarāṇica | kokilākulaṣaṇḍānidodhavītiśivo'nilḥ ||6.24.12||

Translation

शिवः pleasant, अनिलः breeze, मत्तविहङ्गानि inhabited by proud birds प्रलीनभ्रमराणीच drunken honeybees, कोकिलाकुलषण्डानि crowded with cuckoos and other birds, दोधवीति shaking violently, पश्य you may see (said Rama to Lakshmana).

Meaning

"You may see the trees shaking violently by the pleasant breeze, inhabited by proud birds, drunken honeybees and crowded with cuckoos and other birds (Rama said to Lakshmana)."

YK-24-13Yuddha Kanda 24.13

इतिदाशरथीरामोलक्ष्मणंसमभाषत । बलंचतद्वैविभजन् शास्त्रदृष्टेनकर्मणा ।।6.24.13।।

itidāśarathīrāmolakṣmaṇṃsamabhāṣata | balṃcatadvaivibhajan śāstradṛṣṭenakarmaṇā ||6.24.13||

Translation

दाशरथिः Dasaratha's, रामः Rama, इतिलक्ष्मणम् thus to Lakshmana, समभाषत talked, तद्वै in that manner, शास्त्रदृष्टेन in accordance with what is said in sastras, कर्मणा the task, बलं army, विभजच्छ and divide.

Meaning

Dasaratha's son Rama thus talked to Lakshmana in that manner and asked to divide the task of the army in accordance with what is said in sastras.

YK-24-14Yuddha Kanda 24.14

शशासकपिसेनायांबलमादायवीर्यवान् । अङ्गदस्सहनीलेनतिष्ठेदुरसिदुर्जयः ।।6.24.14।।

śaśāsakapisenāyāṃbalamādāyavīryavān | aṅgadassahanīlenatiṣṭhedurasidurjayḥ ||6.24.14||

Translation

शशास terror for the enemies, वीर्यवान् valiant one, दुर्जयः one who is difficult to win over, अङ्गदः Angada, बलात् with his army, ताम् those, कपिसेनायाम् army of Vanaras, आदाय taking, नीलेनसह along with Nila, उरसि heart (central place), तिष्ठेत् remain.

Meaning

Let the valiant Angada who is difficult to win over, who is a terror to the enemies, take the army along with Nila and remain at the centre (of the army structure).

YK-24-15Yuddha Kanda 24.15

तिष्ठेद्वानरवाहिन्यावानरौघसमावृतः । आश्रित्यदक्षिणंपार्श्वमृषभोवानरर्षभ:।। 6.24.15।।

tiṣṭhedvānaravāhinyāvānaraughasamāvṛtḥ | āśrityadakṣiṇṃpārśvamṛṣabhovānararṣabha:|| 6.24.15||

Translation

ऋषभोवानरर्षभ: Rshaba a bull among Vanaras, वानरौघसमावृतः accompanied by his troop of Vanaras, वानरवाहिन्याः Vanara contingent, दक्षिणम् south, पार्श्वम् side, आश्रितः approaching, तिष्ठेत् remain.

Meaning

Let Rshaba the bull among Vanaras approach the south side of the army accompanied by his troop of Vanara contingent and remain there.

YK-24-16Yuddha Kanda 24.16

गन्धहस्तीवदुर्धर्षस्तरस्वीगन्धमादनः । तिष्ठेद्वानरवाहिन्यास्सव्यंपार्श्वंसमाश्रित:।। 6.24.16।।

gandhahastīvadurdharṣastarasvīgandhamādanḥ | tiṣṭhedvānaravāhinyāssavyṃpārśvṃsamāśrita:|| 6.24.16||

Translation

गन्धहस्तीव like a proud elephant, दुर्धर्षः difficult to conquer, तरस्वी strong one, गन्धमादनः Gandhamadana, वानरवाहिन्याः Vanara battalion, सव्यंपार्श्वम् right side, समाश्रितः assemble, तिष्ठेत् remain.

Meaning

"Let the mighty Gandhamadana, a difficult one to conquer like a proud elephant, take the battalion of army and stay on the right side"

YK-24-17Yuddha Kanda 24.17

मूर्ध्निस्थास्याम्यहंयुक्तोलक्ष्मणेनसमन्वितः । जाम्बवांश्चसुषेणश्चवेगदर्शीचवानरः ।।6.24.17।। ऋक्षमुख्यामहात्मानःकुक्षिंरक्षन्तुतेत्रयः ।

mūrdhnisthāsyāmyahṃyuktolakṣmaṇenasamanvitḥ | jāmbavāṃścasuṣeṇaścavegadarśīcavānarḥ ||6.24.17|| ṛkṣamukhyāmahātmānḥkukṣiṃrakṣantutetrayḥ |

Translation

अहम् myself, लक्ष्मणेन along with Lakshmana, समन्वितः alert, युक्त: appropriate, मूर्ध्नि at the head, स्थास्यामि will remain, जाम्बवांश्च Jambavan and also, सुषेणश्च Sushena, वानरः Vanaras, वेगदर्शीच quick at sighting, महात्मानः great ones, ते those, त्रयः three, ऋक्षमुख्याः chiefs of Bears, कुक्षिम् the belly part, रक्षन्तु remain protecting.

Meaning

"I and Lakshmana will be alert at the head side. Let Jambavan Sushena and the three chiefs of Bears who are strong and quick at sighting remain protecting the belly of the army."

YK-24-18Yuddha Kanda 24.18

जघनंकपिसेनायाःकपिराजोऽभिरक्षतु । पश्चार्धमिवलोकस्यप्रचेतास्तेजसावृतः ।।6.24.18।।

jaghanṃkapisenāyāḥkapirājo'bhirakṣatu | paścārdhamivalokasyapracetāstejasāvṛtḥ ||6.24.18||

Translation

तेजसा brilliant, आवृतः covered, प्रचेताः Pracheta, लोकस्य world's, पश्चार्धमिव as if ruling the west, कपिराजः king of Vanaras, कपिसेनायाः Vanara army's, जघम् hips and loins, अभिरक्षु let him protect.

Meaning

"Just as Pracheta who is covered by brilliance, rules the western side of the world, let the king of Vanaras protect the hips and loin portion of the Vanara army."

YK-24-19Yuddha Kanda 24.19

सुविभक्तमहाव्यूहामहावानररक्षिता । अनीकिनीसाविबभौयथाद्यौस्साभ्रसम्प्लवा ।।6.24.19।।

suvibhaktamahāvyūhāmahāvānararakṣitā | anīkinīsāvibabhauyathādyaussābhrasamplavā ||6.24.19||

Translation

सुविभक्तमहाव्यूहा organized that way in the protection of Vanaras, महावानररक्षिता protected the army of Vanaras, साअनीकिनी that army force, साभ्रसम्प्लवा mass of clouds, द्यौःइव like the heavens विबभौ shone.

Meaning

The Vanara army force organized that way to protect the Vanaras, shone like the mass of clouds in heaven.

YK-24-20Yuddha Kanda 24.20

प्रगृह्यगिरिशृङ्गाणिमहातश्चमहीरुहन् । लङ्कांविमर्दयिषवोरणे ।।6.24.20।।

pragṛhyagiriśṛṅgāṇimahātaścamahīruhan | laṅkāṃvimardayiṣavoraṇe ||6.24.20||

Translation

वानराः Vanaras, गिरशृङ्काणि with peaks of mountains, महतः great, महीरुहान् huge trees, प्रगृह्य seizing, रणे in war, विमर्धयिषवः smash, लङ्काम् to Lanka, आशेदुः resolved.

Meaning

Vanaras resolved to go taking peaks of mountains and huge trees to smash Lanka in war.

YK-24-21Yuddha Kanda 24.21

शिखरैर्विकिरामैनांलङ्कांमुष्टभिरेववा । इतिस्मदधिरेसर्वेमनांसिहरिपुङ्गवाः ।।6.24.21।।

śikharairvikirāmaināṃlaṅkāṃmuṣṭabhirevavā | itismadadhiresarvemanāṃsiharipuṅgavāḥ ||6.24.21||

Translation

एनाम् thus, लङ्काम् that Lanka, शिखरैः with peaks, मुष्टिभिरेववा or with bare fists, विकिराम crush it to powder, इतिसर्वे thus all, हरिपुङ्गवाः Vanara leaders, मनांसि determined in their mind, दधिरे hold, स्म indeed.

Meaning

Thus resolved the Vanara leaders in their mind to crush Lanka with its mountain peaks into powder with their bare fists, indeed.

YK-24-22Yuddha Kanda 24.22

ततोरामोमहातेजास्सुग्रीवमिदमब्रवीत् । सुविभक्तानिसैन्यानिशुकएषविमुच्यताम् ।।6.24.22।।

tatorāmomahātejāssugrīvamidamabravīt | suvibhaktānisainyāniśukaeṣavimucyatām ||6.24.22||

Translation

ततः there upon, महातेज splendid, रामः Rama, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva's, इदम् , thus, अब्रवीत् spoke, सैन्यानि the army, सुविभक्तानि the divided, एषः thus, शुकः Suka, विमुच्यताम् relieved.

Meaning

Having heard Sugriva, there after splendid Rama spoke thus. "The army is divided (placed in position). Suka may be relieved."

YK-24-23Yuddha Kanda 24.23

रामस्यतुवचश्श्रुत्वावानरेन्द्रोमहाबलः । मोचयामासतंदूतंशुकंरामस्यशासनात् ।।6.24.23।।

rāmasyatuvacaśśrutvāvānarendromahābalḥ | mocayāmāsatṃdūtṃśukṃrāmasyaśāsanāt ||6.24.23||

Translation

महाबल mighty, वानरेन्द्रः king of Vanaras, रामस्य Rama's, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा having heard, रामस्य Rama's, शासनात् by the instruction, तंदूतम् that envoy, शुकम् happy, मोचयामास was relieved.

Meaning

Having heard Rama's words Sugriva, the mighty king of Vanaras was happy and relieved the envoy on the instruction of Rama.

YK-24-24Yuddha Kanda 24.24

मोचितोरामवाक्येनवानरैश्चनिपीडितः । शुकःपरमसन्त्रस्तोरक्षोधिपमुपागमत् ।।6.24.24।।

mocitorāmavākyenavānaraiścanipīḍitḥ | śukḥparamasantrastorakṣodhipamupāgamat ||6.24.24||

Translation

वानरैः by Vanaras, निपीडितः tormented, रामवाक्येन by Rama's word, मोचितः relieved, शुकः Suka, परमसन्त्रप्त highly terrified, रक्षोधिपम् to the king of Rakshasas, उपागमत् returned.

Meaning

Relieved by the word of Rama, tormented Suka who was highly terrified returned to the king of Rakshasas.

YK-24-25-26Yuddha Kanda 24.25–26 (युग्मम्)

रावणःप्रहसन्नेवशुकंवाक्यमुवाचह ।।6.24.25।। किमिमौतेसितौपक्षौलूनपक्षश्चदृश्यसे । कच्चिन्नानेकचित्तानांतेषांत्वंवशमागतः ।।6.24.26।।

rāvaṇḥprahasannevaśukṃvākyamuvācaha ||6.24.25|| kimimautesitaupakṣaulūnapakṣaścadṛśyase | kaccinnānekacittānāṃteṣāṃtvṃvaśamāgatḥ ||6.24.26||

Translation

रावणः Ravana, प्रहसन्नेव laughing, शुकम् at Suka, वाक्यम् these words, उवाचह spoken, ते to you, इमौ these, पक्षौसीतौकिम् why are your wings fastened? , लूनपक्षश्चकूड even your wings have been clipped, दृश्यसे it appears, त्वम् you, अनेकचित्तानाम् fickle minded, तेषाम् their, वशम् clutches, नआगतः not fallen under कच्चित् I suppose.

Meaning

Laughing at Suka, Ravana spoke these words. "Why are your wings fastened? Your wings have been clipped, it appears!. I suppose you have not fallen under the clutches of the fickle minded Vanaras!"

YK-24-27-28Yuddha Kanda 24.27–28 (युग्मम्)

ततस्सभयसंविग्नस्तदाराज्ञाभिचोदितः । वचनंप्रत्युवाचेदंराक्षसाधिपमुत्तमम् ।।6.24.27।। सागरस्योत्तरेतीरेऽब्रवंतेवचनंतथा । यथासन्धेशमक्लिष्टंसान्त्वयन् श्लक्ष्णयागिरा ।।6.24.28।।

tatassabhayasṃvignastadārājñābhicoditḥ | vacanṃpratyuvācedṃrākṣasādhipamuttamam ||6.24.27|| sāgarasyottaretīre'bravṃtevacanṃtathā | yathāsandheśamakliṣṭṃsāntvayan ślakṣṇayāgirā ||6.24.28||

Translation

ततः then, भयसंविग्नः caught by fear, सः he, तदा then, राज्ञा by king, चोदितः directed, राक्षसाधिपम् Ravana, उत्तमम् excellent, इदम these, वचनम् words, प्रत्युवाच replied, सागरस्य ocean's, उत्तरेतीरे northern bank श्लक्ष्णया gently, गिरा speech, सान्त्वयन् trembling, यथासन्देशम् as conveyed by you, अक्लिष्टम् , ते you, वचनम् words, तथा like that, अब्रवम् told.

Meaning

Then Suka who was caught by fear, having been asked by the king, trembling away thus replied to the Rakshasa king. "I went to the northern shore of the ocean and delivered gently the speech just as it was conveyed by you."

YK-24-29Yuddha Kanda 24.29

क्रुद्धैस्सैरहमुत्प्लुतदृष्टमात्रःप्लवङ्गमैः । गृहीतोऽस्म्यपिचारब्दोहन्तुंलोप्तुंचमुष्टिभि ।।6.24.29।।

kruddhaissairahamutplutadṛṣṭamātrḥplavaṅgamaiḥ | gṛhīto'smyapicārabdohantuṃloptuṃcamuṣṭibhi ||6.24.29||

Translation

दृष्टमात्रः as soon as they saw, अहम् me, क्रुद्धै enraged, तैःप्लवङ्गमैः those monkeys, उत्प्लुत्य rising up, गृहीतःअस्मि taking hold of me, अपिच and also, मुष्टिभिः with fists, हन्तुम् to slay, लोप्तुंच and injuring, आरब्दः started.

Meaning

As soon as they saw me, the enraged Vanaras rising up (into the sky) took hold of me and started injuring me and slaying me.

YK-24-30Yuddha Kanda 24.30

नैवसम्भाषितुंशक्यास्सम्प्रश्नोऽत्रनलभ्यते । प्रकृत्याकोपनास्तीक्ष्णानानराराक्षसाधिप ।।6.24.30।।

naivasambhāṣituṃśakyāssampraśno'tranalabhyate | prakṛtyākopanāstīkṣṇānānarārākṣasādhipa ||6.24.30||

Translation

राक्षसाधिप king of Rakshasas, ते to you, सम्भाषितुम् to negotiate, नशक्याः was not possible, अत्र there, सम्प्रश्नः to question, नलम्यते had no opportunity, वानराः Vanaras, प्रकृत्या by nature, कोपनाः are violent, तीक्ष्णाः highly furious.

Meaning

"O king of Rakshasas! It was not possible to negotiate there with the Vanaras). I had no opportunity to interrogate with them. By nature, Vanaras are violent and are highly furious."

YK-24-31Yuddha Kanda 24.31

सचहन्ताविराधस्यकबन्धस्यखरस्यच । सुग्रीवसहितोरामस्सीताया: पदमागतः ।।6.24.31।।

sacahantāvirādhasyakabandhasyakharasyaca | sugrīvasahitorāmassītāyā: padamāgatḥ ||6.24.31||

Translation

विराधस्य Viradha's, कबन्धस्य Kabhanda's, खरस्य Khara's, हन्ता life was taken, सःरामः by that Rama, सुग्रीवसहितः accompanied by Sugriva, सीताया: Sita's, पदम् set foot into, आगतः arrived.

Meaning

"The life of Viradha, Kabhanda and Khara has been taken away by Rama. Accompanied by Sugriva they have set their foot into Lanka for Sita's sake."

YK-24-32Yuddha Kanda 24.32

सकृत्वासागरेसेतुंतीर्त्वाचलवणोदधिम् । एषरक्षांसिनिर्दूयधन्वीतिष्ठतिराघवः ।।6.24.32।।

sakṛtvāsāgaresetuṃtīrtvācalavaṇodadhim | eṣarakṣāṃsinirdūyadhanvītiṣṭhatirāghavḥ ||6.24.32||

Translation

एषः such, राघवः Raghava, सागरे on the ocean, सेतुम् bridge, कृत्वा having crossed, लवणोदधिम् salt sea, तीर्त्वाच shore of, रक्षां Rakshasas, विर्दूय distancing, धन्वी wielding a bow, तिष्ठति stands.

Meaning

"Mighty Raghava having crossed the salt sea and reached the shore of Rakshasas, organized them (Vanaras) and stood wielding a bow."

YK-24-33Yuddha Kanda 24.33

ऋक्षवानरसङ्घानामनीकानिसहस्रशः । गिरिमेघनिकाशानांछादयन्तिवसुन्धराम् ।।6.24.33।।

ṛkṣavānarasaṅghānāmanīkānisahasraśḥ | girimeghanikāśānāṃchādayantivasundharām ||6.24.33||

Translation

गिरिमेघनिकाशानाम् resembling mountains and clouds, ऋक्षवानरसङ्घानाम् army of Bears and Vanaras, सहस्रशः in thousands, अनीकानि an army force, वसुन्धराम् on the land, छादयन्ति settled.

Meaning

"Thousands of army forces of monkeys and Bears resembling mountains and clouds have settled on the ground."

YK-24-34Yuddha Kanda 24.34

राक्षसानांबलौघस्यवानरेन्द्रबलस्यच । नैतयोर्विद्यतेसन्धिर्देवदानवयोरिव ।।6.24.34।।

rākṣasānāṃbalaughasyavānarendrabalasyaca | naitayorvidyatesandhirdevadānavayoriva ||6.24.34||

Translation

राक्षसां Rakshasas, बलौघस्य for Bears, वानरेन्द्रबलस्यच for army of Vanara king's, एतयोः for both of them, देवदानवयोरिव like for gods and demons, सन्धि: alliance, नविद्यते not possible.

Meaning

Alliance is not possible between Rakshasas and army of Bears and Vanaras, just as alliance is not possible between gods and demons.

YK-24-35Yuddha Kanda 24.35

पुराप्राकारमायान्तिक्षिप्रमेकतरंकुरु । सीतांवास्मैप्रयच्छाशुसुयुद्धंवापिप्रदीयताम् ।।6.24.35।।

purāprākāramāyāntikṣipramekatarṃkuru | sītāṃvāsmaiprayacchāśusuyuddhṃvāpipradīyatām ||6.24.35||

Translation

प्राकारम् boundary, पुरा of the city, आयान्ति will reach, क्षिप्रम् at once, एकतरम् one of the two, कुरु do, अस्मै you may, आसु give back, सीताम् Sita, प्रयच्छवा or implore you, सुयुद्धम् वापि or give good battle, प्रदीयताम् I suggest you

Meaning

"They will reach the boundary wall. At once you may do one of the two that I suggest you do. I implore you either to give away Sita or give good battle."

YK-24-36Yuddha Kanda 24.36

शुकस्यवचनंश्रुत्वारावणोवाक्यमब्रवीत् । रोषसंरक्तनयनोनिर्दहन्निनचक्षुषा ।।6.24.36।।

śukasyavacanṃśrutvārāvaṇovākyamabravīt | roṣasṃraktanayanonirdahanninacakṣuṣā ||6.24.36||

Translation

रावणः Ravana, शुकस्य Suka's, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा having heard, रोषसंरक्तनयनः with angry red eyes, चक्षुषा from his eyes, निर्दहन्निव as if he would burn with his glance, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवित् spoke.

Meaning

Angry, redeyed Ravana, having heard Suka's words spoke as though he would burn him with his glance.

YK-24-37Yuddha Kanda 24.37

यदिमांप्रतियुध्येरन् देवगन्धर्वदानवाः । नैवसीतांप्रदास्यामिसर्वलोकभयादपि ।।6.24.37।।

yadimāṃpratiyudhyeran devagandharvadānavāḥ | naivasītāṃpradāsyāmisarvalokabhayādapi ||6.24.37||

Translation

देवगन्धर्वदानवाः gods, Gandharvas and demons, माम् with me, प्रतियुध्येरन्नपि even if come to wage war, सर्वलोकभयादपि even if all worlds threaten me, सीताम् Sita, नावप्रदास्यामि I shall not give away.

Meaning

"Even if gods, Gandharvas and demons come to wage war with me, even if all the worlds threaten me, I shall not give away Sita."

YK-24-38Yuddha Kanda 24.38

कदासमभिधावन्तिराघवंमामकाश्शराः । वसन्तेपुष्पितंमत्ताभ्रमराइवपादपम् ।।6.24.38।।

kadāsamabhidhāvantirāghavṃmāmakāśśarāḥ | vasantepuṣpitṃmattābhramarāivapādapam ||6.24.38||

Translation

मामकाः my, शराः arrows, राघवम् to Raghava वसन्ते spring season, पुष्पितम् blossoms, पादपम् trees, मत्ताः drunken, ब्रमराःइव like the bees, कदा when, समभिधावन्ति would attack.

Meaning

"Just as drunken bees reach the trees with blossoms in spring when will my arrows attack Rama?"

YK-24-39Yuddha Kanda 24.39

कदातूणीयशैर्दीप्तैर्गणश: कार्मुकच्युतैः । शरैरादीपयाम्येनमुल्काभिरिवकुञ्जरम् ।।6.24.39।।

kadātūṇīyaśairdīptairgaṇaśa: kārmukacyutaiḥ | śarairādīpayāmyenamulkābhirivakuñjaram ||6.24.39||

Translation

दीप्तै: glowing, तूणीयशै: from the famed quiver, कार्मुकच्युतैः fit to pierce, गणश: thousands of, शरैः darts, येन by which, कुञ्जरम् elephant, उल्काभिरिव like the burning sticks, कदाआदीपयामि when will I able to goad.

Meaning

"When will the glowing arrows from my quiver, that are fit to pierce in thousands, be able to goad Rama like the burning fire sticks goad the elephants?"

YK-24-40Yuddha Kanda 24.40

तच्चास्यबलमादास्येबलेनमहतावृतः । ज्योतिषामिवसर्वेषांप्रभामुद्यन्दिवाकरः ।।6.24.40।।

taccāsyabalamādāsyebalenamahatāvṛtḥ | jyotiṣāmivasarveṣāṃprabhāmudyandivākarḥ ||6.24.40||

Translation

उद्यन् rising, दिवाकरः Sun, सर्वेषाम् of all, ज्योतिषाम् light, प्रभामिव like the radiance, महता great, बलेन army, वृतः surrounded by, अस्य his, तत् that, बलम् strength, आदास्ये obscure.

Meaning

"Just as the rising Sun light obscures the radiance of all (other stars) when will I obscure him surrounded by his army?"

YK-24-41Yuddha Kanda 24.41

सागरस्येवमेवेगोमारुतस्येवमेगति: । नहिदाशरथिर्वेदतेनमांयोद्धुमिच्छति ।।6.24.41।।

sāgarasyevamevegomārutasyevamegati: | nahidāśarathirvedatenamāṃyoddhumicchati ||6.24.41||

Translation

मे I, वेगः speed, सागरस्येव like the ocean, मे I, गति: swiftness, मारुतस्येव like the WindGod, दाशरथिः Dasaratha's son, नहिवेद not know, तेव that is why, माम् with me, योध्दुम् to wage war, इच्छति desiring.

Meaning

"I have the speed of the ocean and swiftness like the WindGod. Rama does not know this and desires to wage war with me."

YK-24-42Yuddha Kanda 24.42

नमेतूणीशयान्बाणान् सविषानिवपन्नगान् । रामःपश्यतिसङ्ग्रामेतेनमांयोध्दुमिच्छति ।।6.24.42।।

nametūṇīśayānbāṇān saviṣānivapannagān | rāmḥpaśyatisaṅgrāmetenamāṃyodhdumicchati ||6.24.42||

Translation

सविषान् the poisonous, पन्नगानिव serpents like, तूणीशयान् in my quiver, मेबाणान् my arrows, रामः Rama, सङ्ग्रामे in battle, नपश्यति has not seen, तेन therefore, माम् with me, योध्दुम् combat, इच्छति desiring.

Meaning

"Rama has not seen the poisonous arrows in my quiver in battle. Therefore, he is desiring comb at with me."

YK-24-43-44Yuddha Kanda 24.43–44 (युग्मम्)

नजानातिपुरावीर्यममयुद्धेसराघवः । ममचापमयींवीणांशरकोणैःप्रवादिताम् ।।6.24.43।। ज्याशब्दतुमुलांघोरामार्तभीतमहास्वनाम् । नाराचतलसन्नादांतांममाहितवाहिनीम् ।।6.24.44।। अवगाह्यमहारङ्गंवादयिष्याम्यहंरणे ।

najānātipurāvīryamamayuddhesarāghavḥ | mamacāpamayīṃvīṇāṃśarakoṇaiḥpravāditām ||6.24.43|| jyāśabdatumulāṃghorāmārtabhītamahāsvanām | nārācatalasannādāṃtāṃmamāhitavāhinīm ||6.24.44|| avagāhyamahāraṅgṃvādayiṣyāmyahṃraṇe |

Translation

सःराघवः that Rama, पुरा in the past, युद्धे in war, मम my, वीर्यम् valour, नजानाति not known, अहम् I, रणे in war, ताम् them, मम my, आहितवाहिनीम् entering the enemy's army, महारङ्गम् formidable Veena, अवगाह्य holding, शरकोणैः by the sharp heads of arrows, प्रवादिताम् makes sounds of challenge, ज्याशब्दतुमुलाम् that tumultuous noise, घोराम् terrific, आर्तभीतमहास्वनाम् high sound caused by the destitute and frightened ones, नाराचतलंसन्नादाम् its sound like that of iron arrows, चापमयीम् with that bow in hand, मम of mine, वीणाम् Veena, वादयिष्यामि will play.

Meaning

"He has not known my valour in war. Entering the enemy's army holding my formidable Veena, making challenging sounds with the sharp heads of arrows, causing tumultuous noise like the sound of cry of destitute and frightened ones with iron arrows, I will play the Veena of my bow in hand."

YK-24-45Yuddha Kanda 24.45

नवासवेनापिसहस्रचक्षुषायथास्मिशक्योवरुणेनवास्वयम् । यमेनवाधर्षयितुंशराग्निनामहाहवेवैश्रवणेनवापुन: ।। 6.24.45।।

navāsavenāpisahasracakṣuṣāyathāsmiśakyovaruṇenavāsvayam | yamenavādharṣayituṃśarāgnināmahāhavevaiśravaṇenavāpuna: || 6.24.45||

Translation

सहस्रचक्षुषा thousand eyed one, Indra, वासवेनानिपि even god of water, पुन: again, वरुणेनापि for Varuna also, युध्दे in war, यमेनवा if he is god of death, Yama also, महाहवे great fire, स्वयम् himself, वैश्रवणेनवा even if he be Lord of wealth Kubera, शराग्निना by my arrows, शक्यः possible, न not.

Meaning

"It is not possible (to win over) for the thousand eyed Indra, or even Varuna, the god presiding over water, or even for Yama, the god of death and again even for Kubera the god of wealth to face the fire of my arrows (said Ravana to Suka)." ।। इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकावेयुध्दकाण्डेचतुर्विंशस्सर्गः ।। This is the end of the twenty fourth sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic, the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
