YK-2-1Yuddha Kanda 2.1

तंतुशोकपरिद्यूनंरामंदशरथात्मजम् । उवाचवचनंश्रीमान् सुग्रीवश्शोकनाशनम् ।।6.2.1।।

tṃtuśokaparidyūnṃrāmṃdaśarathātmajam | uvācavacanṃśrīmān sugrīvaśśokanāśanam ||6.2.1||

Translation

श्रीमान्: glorious, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, शोकपरिद्यूनम्: one who is filled with sorrow, दशरथात्मजम्: Dasaratha's son, तम्: him, रामम्: at Rama, शोकनाशनम्: to remove the agony , वचनम्: words of advice, उवाच: spoke

Meaning

Glorious Sugriva spoke such words of advice to remove the agony of Rama,son of Dasaratha, who was filled with sorrow.

YK-2-2Yuddha Kanda 2.2

किंत्वंसन्तप्यसेवीर यथान्यःप्राकृतस्तथा । मैवंभूस्त्यजसन्तापंकृतघ्नइवसौहृदम् ।।6.2.2।।

kiṃtvṃsantapyasevīra yathānyḥprākṛtastathā | maivṃbhūstyajasantāpṃkṛtaghnaivasauhṛdam ||6.2.2||

Translation

वीर: heroic, अन्यः like others , प्राकृतः common man, यथा: likewise, तथा: that way, त्वया: by you, किम्: why, तप्यते: give up grief, एवम्: that way, माभूः do not be, एवम: like this , कृतघ्नः ungrateful one, इव: like that, सन्तापम्: grief, त्यज: give up सौहृदम्: friendship

Meaning

"Heroic Rama Why are you grieving like a common man? Give up your grief just like an ungrateful one gives up friendship."

YK-2-3Yuddha Kanda 2.3

सन्तापस्यचतेस्थानंनहिपश्यामिराघव । प्रवृत्तावुपलब्धायांज्ञातेचनिलयेरिपोः ।।6.2.3।।

santāpasyacatesthānṃnahipaśyāmirāghava | pravṛttāvupalabdhāyāṃjñātecanilayeripoḥ ||6.2.3||

Translation

राघव: Raghava, प्रवृत्तौ: information , उपलब्धायाम्: having secured,ज्ञाते: knowing, चनिलयेरिपोः and the enemy's residence, सन्तापस्य: mourning, स्थानम्: location, नपश्यामिहि: I do not see the reason

Meaning

"Raghava Having secured the information (of Sita) and known the location of the enemy's residence, I do not see the reason for your mourning."

YK-2-4Yuddha Kanda 2.4

मतिमान्शास्त्रवित्प्राज्ञःपण्डितश्चासिराघव । त्यजेमांपापिकांबुद्धिंकृतात्मेवार्थदूषणीम् ।।6.2.4।।

matimānśāstravitprājñḥpaṇḍitaścāsirāghava | tyajemāṃpāpikāṃbuddhiṃkṛtātmevārthadūṣaṇīm ||6.2.4||

Translation

राघव: Raghava, मतिमान्: an intellectual, शास्त्रवित्: one who is well versed in Sastras, प्राज्ञः one who is wise, पण्डितश्चअसि: and who is learned also, कृतात्मा: one who is efficient, अर्थदूषणीम्: one who is a violator of subtle truth, बुद्धिम्: intellect , इमाम्: these, पापिकाम्: sinful, त्यज: give up

Meaning

"Raghava You are an intellectual, well versed in Sastras, wise and learned. Give up this sinful thought just as the one who is efficient gives up the one who violates subtle truth."

YK-2-5Yuddha Kanda 2.5

समुद्रंलङ्घयित्वातुमहानक्रसमाकुलम् । लङ्कामारोहयिष्यामोहनिष्यामश्चतेरिपुम् ।।6.2.5।।

samudrṃlaṅghayitvātumahānakrasamākulam | laṅkāmārohayiṣyāmohaniṣyāmaścateripum ||6.2.5||

Translation

महानक्रसमाकुलम्: that which is infested with huge crocodiles, समुद्रम्: ocean, लङ्घयित्वा: if we cross over, लङ्काम्: Lanka, आरोहयिष्याम: ascending the fortress, ते: your, रिपुम्: enemy, हनिष्यामश्च: know that he is killed

Meaning

"If we cross over that ocean infested with huge crocodiles and ascend the fortress of Lanka, know that the enemy is killed."

YK-2-6Yuddha Kanda 2.6

निरुत्साहस्यदीनस्यशोकपर्याकुलात्मनः । सर्वार्थाव्यवसीदन्तिव्यसनंचाधिगच्छति ।।6.2.6।।

nirutsāhasyadīnasyaśokaparyākulātmanḥ | sarvārthāvyavasīdantivyasanṃcādhigacchati ||6.2.6||

Translation

निरुत्साहस्य: one who is despondent, दीनस्य: for a dejected person, शोकपर्याकुलात्मनः overwhelmed with grief, सर्वार्थाः in all matters, व्यवसीदन्ति: dispirited, व्यसनंच: and worry, अधिगच्छति: will be destroyed

Meaning

"One who is despondent, dejected and overwhelmed with grief, will be dispirited in all matters. Not only that with worry he will meet with disaster."

YK-2-7Yuddha Kanda 2.7

इमेशूरास्समर्थाश्चसर्वनोहरियूथपाः । त्वत्प्रियार्थंकृतोत्साहाःप्रवेष्टुमपिपावकम् । एषांहर्षेणजानामितर्कश्चास्मिन् दृढोमम ।।6.2.7।।

imeśūrāssamarthāścasarvanohariyūthapāḥ | tvatpriyārthṃkṛtotsāhāḥpraveṣṭumapipāvakam | eṣāṃharṣeṇajānāmitarkaścāsmin dṛḍhomama ||6.2.7||

Translation

सर्वतः all these , इमे: to you, हरियूथपाः vanara leaders, शूराः heroes , समर्थाश्च: highly capable, त्वत्प्रियार्थम् : for your happiness, पावकम्: fire, प्रवेष्टुम्: to enter अपि: also, कृतोत्साहः are ready, एषाम्: these, हर्षेण: joy, जानामि: I know, मम: me, तर्कश्चापि: even infer, दृढः I am certain

Meaning

All these vanara leaders and heroes are highly capable and for your happiness they are even ready to enter fire. I know this from their joy and I even infer that it is certain (to happen).

YK-2-8Yuddha Kanda 2.8

विक्रमेणसमानेष्येसीतांहत्वायथारिपुम् । रावणंपापकर्माणंतथात्वंकर्तुमर्हसि ।।6.2.8।।

vikrameṇasamāneṣyesītāṃhatvāyathāripum | rāvaṇṃpāpakarmāṇṃtathātvṃkartumarhasi ||6.2.8||

Translation

रिपुम्: enemy, पापकर्माणम्: one of sinful deeds, रावणम्: Ravana, विक्रमेण: with prowess, हत्वा: on killing, सीताम्: Sita, यथा: that way, समानेष्ये: bring back, तथा: that way, त्वम्: your, कर्तुम्: will do , अर्हसि: you ought to

Meaning

"You ought to work such that we would kill that enemy Ravana of sinful deeds with our prowess and get back Sita. I hope you are capable of doing that."

YK-2-9Yuddha Kanda 2.9

सेतुरत्रयथाबध्येद्यथापश्येमतांपुरीम् । तस्यराक्षसराजस्यतथात्वंकुरुराघव ।।6.2.9।।

seturatrayathābadhyedyathāpaśyematāṃpurīm | tasyarākṣasarājasyatathātvṃkururāghava ||6.2.9||

Translation

राघव: Raghava, अत्र: there, सेतुः bridge, यथा: in that way, बध्येत्: would build , तस्य: his, राक्षसराजस्य: rakshasa king's, ताम्: that, पुरीम्: city, यथा:like that, पश्येमः will see, तथा: that way, त्वम्: you, कुरु: think

Meaning

"Raghava You think that we will be building a bridge and then seeing that city of the king of Rakshasas."

YK-2-10Yuddha Kanda 2.10

दृष्टवातांतुपुरींलङ्कांत्रिकूटशिखरेस्थिताम् । हतंचरावणंयुद्धेदर्शनावधारय ।।6.2.10।।

dṛṣṭavātāṃtupurīṃlaṅkāṃtrikūṭaśikharesthitām | hatṃcarāvaṇṃyuddhedarśanāvadhāraya ||6.2.10||

Translation

त्रिकूटशिखरे: on top of Trikuta mountain, स्थिताम्: situated, ताम्: that, लङ्कांपुरीम्: city of Lanka, दृष्टवा: after seeing, युद्धे: in war, तु: you, दर्शनात्: on having a look , रावणम्: Ravana, हतम्: is killed, अवधारय: can determine

Meaning

"If the city of Lanka situated on top of Trikuta mountain is seen, you can be sure that Ravana is killed."

YK-2-11Yuddha Kanda 2.11

अबध्वासागरेसेतुंघोरेचतुवरुणालये । लङ्कांनमर्दितुंशक्यासेन्द्रैरपिसुरासुरैः ।।6.2.11।।

abadhvāsāgaresetuṃghorecatuvaruṇālaye | laṅkāṃnamardituṃśakyāsendrairapisurāsuraiḥ ||6.2.11||

Translation

घोरे: dreadful, वरुणालये: abode of Varuna, सागरे: on the ocean, सेतुम्: bridge, अबध्वा: without building, लङ्का: Lanka, सेन्द्रैः Indra , सुरासुरैःअपि: even suras and asuras, मर्दितुम्: to crush, नशक्या: not possible

Meaning

"Without building a bridge on that dreadful ocean, the abode of Varuna, it is not possible for suras or asuras accompanied by Indra also to crush Lanka."

YK-2-12-13Yuddha Kanda 2.12–13 (युग्मम्)

सेतुर्बद्धस्समुद्रेचयावल्लङ्कास्समीपतः ।।6.2.12।। सर्वंतीर्णंचमेसैन्यंजितमित्युपधारय । इमेहिसमरेवीराहरयःकामरूपिण ।।6.2.13।।

seturbaddhassamudrecayāvallaṅkāssamīpatḥ ||6.2.12|| sarvṃtīrṇṃcamesainyṃjitamityupadhāraya | imehisamarevīrāharayḥkāmarūpiṇa ||6.2.13||

Translation

लङ्कासमीपतः up to Lanka, समुद्रे: on the ocean, यावत्: up to , सेतुः bridge, बद्ध: on building, मे: mine, सर्वम्: all, सैन्यम्: army, तीर्णम्: crossed over, जितम् इति: like having won, उपधारय: consider, कामरूपिणः those who can assume any form, इमे: these, हरयः vanaras, समरे: in war, वीराः heroic

Meaning

"On building a bridge over the large ocean up to Lanka, when all my army of vanaras can cross over, you may consider that you have won. These vanaras are heroic in war and can assume any form at will."

YK-2-14Yuddha Kanda 2.14

तदलंविक्लबांबुद्धिम् राजन सर्वार्थनाशनीम् । पुरुषस्यहिलोकेऽस्मिन् शोकश्शौर्यापकर्षणः ।।6.2.14।।

tadalṃviklabāṃbuddhim rājana sarvārthanāśanīm | puruṣasyahiloke'smin śokaśśauryāpakarṣaṇḥ ||6.2.14||

Translation

राजन्: O king, तत्: therefore, सर्वार्थनाशनीम्: that which destroys everything, विक्लबाम् agitated, बुद्धिम्: feeling , अलम्: enough, अस्मिन्: in this, लोके: world, पुरुषस्य: man's, शोकः sorrowful, शौर्यापकर्षण: valiance is lost

Meaning

"O king, therefore enough of this agitated feeling which destroys everything. In this world the valiance of man is lost if he is sorrowful."

YK-2-15Yuddha Kanda 2.15

यत्तुकार्यंमनुष्येणशौण्डीर्यमवलम्बता । अस्मिन् कालेमहाप्राज्ञसत्त्वमातिष्ठतेजसा ।।6.2.15।।

yattukāryṃmanuṣyeṇaśauṇḍīryamavalambatā | asmin kālemahāprājñasattvamātiṣṭhatejasā ||6.2.15||

Translation

मनुष्येण: by a human being, यत्: just as, शैण्डीर्यम्: heroism, अवलम्बता: follows, कार्यं: task तु: you, महाप्राज्ञ: very wise, अस्मिन्: in this, काले: world, तेजसा: courage, सत्त्वम्: valour, अतिष्ट: rise up

Meaning

"Just as heroism follows a human being in this world on accomplishing a task, you who are very wise, should resort to courage and valour and rise up."

YK-2-16Yuddha Kanda 2.16

शूराणांहिमनुष्याणांत्वद्विधानांमहात्मनाम् । विनष्टेवाप्रणष्टेवाशोकस्सर्वार्थनाशनः ।।6.2.16।।

śūrāṇāṃhimanuṣyāṇāṃtvadvidhānāṃmahātmanām | vinaṣṭevāpraṇaṣṭevāśokassarvārthanāśanḥ ||6.2.16||

Translation

शूराणाम्: among the valiant ones, महात्मनाम्: great, त्वद्विधानाम्: that method, मनुष्याणाम्: by human being, विनष्टेवा: that which is destroyed, प्रणष्टेवा: or lost, शोकः worrying, सर्वार्थनाशनः leads to disaster of everything

Meaning

"If you who are great among the valiant ones worry for that which is destroyed or lost, it would lead to disaster of everything."

YK-2-17Yuddha Kanda 2.17

तत्त्वंबुद्धिमतांश्रेष्ठस्सर्वशास्त्रार्थकोविदः । मद्विधैस्सचिवैस्सार्थमरिंजेतुमिहार्हसि ।।6.2.17।।

tattvṃbuddhimatāṃśreṣṭhassarvaśāstrārthakovidḥ | madvidhaissacivaissārthamariṃjetumihārhasi ||6.2.17||

Translation

त्वम्: you, बुद्धिमताम्: highly intelligent, श्रेष्ठः foremost सर्वशास्त्रार्थकोविदः wellversed in the meaning of all sastras, त्वम्: to you, तु: to you, मद्विधैः like me, सचिवैः friends सार्थम्: along with, अरिम्: enemy, जेतुम्: conquer, इहार्हसि: you will

Meaning

"You are highly intelligent, foremost among those who are wellversed in the meaning of all shastras. You will conquer your enemy along with friends like me."

YK-2-18Yuddha Kanda 2.18

नहिपश्याम्यहंकंचित् त्रिषुलोकेषुराघव । गृहीतधनुषेयस्तेतिष्ठेदभिमुखोरणे ।।6.2.18।।

nahipaśyāmyahṃkṃcit triṣulokeṣurāghava | gṛhītadhanuṣeyastetiṣṭhedabhimukhoraṇe ||6.2.18||

Translation

राघव: Raghava, रणे: when in war, गृहीतधनुषः holding the bow, ते: your, अभिमुखो: in front, यः who, तिष्ठेत्: stood by, कंचित्: indeed, त्रिषु: in the three, लोकेषु: worlds, अहम्: I, नपश्यामिहि: have not seen

Meaning

"O Raghava When you hold the bow in war, Indeed who can stand in front of you in the three worlds. I have not seen."

YK-2-19Yuddha Kanda 2.19

वानरेषुसमासक्तंनतेकार्यंविपत्स्यते । अचिराद्द्रक्ष्यसेसीतांतीर्त्वासागरमक्ष्यम् ।।6.2.19।।

vānareṣusamāsaktṃnatekāryṃvipatsyate | acirāddrakṣyasesītāṃtīrtvāsāgaramakṣyam ||6.2.19||

Translation

वानरेषु: upon vanaras, समासक्तम्: entrusted , तेकार्यम्: this task of yours, नविपत्स्यते: will not be spoilt, अक्षयम्: that which cannot be subdued , सागरम्: ocean, तीर्त्वा: crossing over, अचिरात्: very soon, सीताम्: that Sita, द्रक्ष्यसे: you will see

Meaning

"The task of yours entrusted to vanaras will never be spoiled. Very soon you will see Sita crossing over the ocean that cannot be subdued."

YK-2-20Yuddha Kanda 2.20

तदलंशोकमालम्ब्यक्रोधमालम्बभूपते । निश्चेष्टाःक्षत्रियामन्दास्सर्वेचण्डस्यबिभ्यति ।।6.2.20।।

tadalṃśokamālambyakrodhamālambabhūpate | niśceṣṭāḥkṣatriyāmandāssarvecaṇḍasyabibhyati ||6.2.20||

Translation

भूपते: O Lord of earth, तत्: that, शोकम्: pain, आलम्ब्य: experienced, अलम्: enough, क्रोधम्: anger, अलम्ब: take on to, निश्चेष्टाः become lethargic , क्षत्रियाः when kshatriyas, मन्दाः dull people, चण्डस्य: at fearful one , सर्वे: all, बिभ्यति: are scared

Meaning

"O Lord of earth Enough of that pain you have experienced. Give up sorrow and take on to anger. When kshatriyas are lethargic, they become dull but all are scared at a fearful one."

YK-2-21Yuddha Kanda 2.21

लङ्घनार्थंचघोरस्यसमुद्रस्यनदींपतेः । सहास्माभिरिहोपेतस्सूक्ष्मबुद्धिर्विचारय ।।6.2.21।।

laṅghanārthṃcaghorasyasamudrasyanadīṃpateḥ | sahāsmābhirihopetassūkṣmabuddhirvicāraya ||6.2.21||

Translation

सूक्ष्मबुद्धिः one with subtle intellect, इह: now, अस्माभिःसह: along with us,उपेतः means , नदीपतेः lord of rivers, घोरस्य: dreadful, समुद्रस्य: of ocean, लङ्घनार्थम्: to cross over, विचारय: think of

Meaning

"You are endowed with subtle intellect and now think of the means to cross over this dreadful looking ocean the lord of rivers."

YK-2-22Yuddha Kanda 2.22

लङ्घितेतस्यतैस्सैन्यंजितमित्युपधारय । सर्वंतीर्णंचमेसैन्यंजितमित्यवधार्यताम् ।।6.2.22।।

laṅghitetasyataissainyṃjitamityupadhāraya | sarvṃtīrṇṃcamesainyṃjitamityavadhāryatām ||6.2.22||

Translation

तैः these vanaras, सैन्यैः army, तस्य: for them, लङ्घिते: if they can cross, जितमित्येव: have conquered, मे: my, सर्वम्: all, सैन्यम्: army, तीर्णम्: certain , जितमिति: have succeeded, अवधार्यताम्: certainly, उपधारय: presume

Meaning

"If the vanara army can cross (the ocean) you are certain that we will conquer. Presume that the army has succeeded."

YK-2-23Yuddha Kanda 2.23

इमेहिहरयश्शूरास्समरेकामरूपिणः । तानरीन्विधमिष्यन्तिशिलापादपवृष्टिभिः ।।6.2.23।।

imehiharayaśśūrāssamarekāmarūpiṇḥ | tānarīnvidhamiṣyantiśilāpādapavṛṣṭibhiḥ ||6.2.23||

Translation

समरे: in combat, शूराः heroes, कामरूपिणः those who can take any form at their will, इमेहरयः these vanaras, शिलापादपवृष्टिभिः rain boulders and trees, तान्: those, अरीन्: enemies, विधमिष्यन्तिहि: would cut them to size

Meaning

"Being heroic in combat, these vanaras can take any form at their will.They would rain boulders and trees on enemies and cut them to size."

YK-2-24Yuddha Kanda 2.24

कथञ्चित्सन्तरिष्यामस्तेवयंवरुणालयम् । हतमित्येवतंमन्येयुद्धेशत्रुनिबर्हण ।।6.2.24।।

kathañcitsantariṣyāmastevayṃvaruṇālayam | hatamityevatṃmanyeyuddheśatrunibarhaṇa ||6.2.24||

Translation

शत्रुनिबर्हण: exterminator of foes, वरुणालयम्: abode of Varuna the ocean, कथञ्चित्: by any means, वयम्: us, सन्तरिष्याम: the enemy, युद्दे: in combat, तं: him(Ravana), हतमित्येव: has been killed , मन्ये: think

Meaning

"O Exterminator of foes By whatever means the ocean is crossed by us, think that the enemy has been killed in combat."

YK-2-25Yuddha Kanda 2.25

किमुक्त्वाबहुधाचापिसर्वथाविजयीभवान् । निमित्तानिचपश्यामिमनोमेसम्प्रहृष्यति ।।6.2.25।।

kimuktvābahudhācāpisarvathāvijayībhavān | nimittānicapaśyāmimanomesamprahṛṣyati ||6.2.25||

Translation

बहुधा: many, उक्त्वा: speaking, किम्: what use, सर्वथा: by all means, भवान्: to you, विजयी: victory, निमित्तानि: signs, पश्यामि: are seen, मे: by me, मनः in mind, सम्प्रहृष्यति: is highly delighted

Meaning

"Of what use is speaking many words. By all means you will be victorious. I see signs of it and feel highly delighted in my mind." ।।इत्यार्षेवाल्मीकीयेश्रीमद्रामायणेआदिकाव्येयुद्धकाण्डेद्वितीयस्सर्गः।। This is the end of the second Sarga of Yuddha Kanda of the first epic,the holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
