YK-129-1Yuddha Kanda 129.1

बहूनिनामवर्षाणिगतस्यसुमहद्वनम् । शृणोम्यहंप्रीतिकरंममनाथस्यकीर्तनम् ।।6.129.1।।

bahūnināmavarṣāṇigatasyasumahadvanam | śṛṇomyahṃprītikarṃmamanāthasyakīrtanam ||6.129.1||

Translation

बहूनि many, वर्षाणि years, सुमहत् great, वनम् forest, गतस्य living, ममनाधस्य my Lord, प्रीतिकरम् returning, कीर्तनम् news, अहम् I, शृणोमिनाम hearing his name

Meaning

"I am hearing the good news of my Lord returning from the forest, who was living in the great forest for many years."

YK-129-2Yuddha Kanda 129.2

कल्याणीबतगाथेयंलौकिकीप्रतिभातिमे । एतिजीवन्तमानन्दोनरंवर्षशतादपि ।।6.129.2।।

kalyāṇībatagātheyṃlaukikīpratibhātime | etijīvantamānandonarṃvarṣaśatādapi ||6.129.2||

Translation

जीवन्तम् living, नरम् humans, वर्षशतादपि for a hundred years, आनन्दः happy, एति such, इयम् this, लौकिकी saying, गाथा story, मे to me, कल्याणी auspicious, प्रतिभाति true

Meaning

The saying that "If a human being lives (long), for a hundred years, he will experience joy" is true and auspicious.

YK-129-3Yuddha Kanda 129.3

राघवस्यहरीणां च कथमासीत्समागमः । कस्मिन् देशेकिमाश्रित्यतत्त्वमाख्याहिपृच्छतः ।।6.129.3।।

rāghavasyaharīṇāṃ ca kathamāsītsamāgamḥ | kasmin deśekimāśrityatattvamākhyāhipṛcchatḥ ||6.129.3||

Translation

राघवस्य च Raghava's, कपीनां च with the monkeys, कस्मिन् देवे where with Rama, किम् why, आश्रित्य alliance, कथम् how, समागमः friendshipmeeting, आसीत् asking, पृच्छतः tell, तत्त्वम् truly आख्याहि please tell

Meaning

"How did the alliance of monkeys happen with Rama? Where and why? I am asking you. Tell me truly."

YK-129-4Yuddha Kanda 129.4

स पृष्टोराजपुत्रेणबृश्यांसमुपवेशितः । आचचक्षेततस्सर्वंरामस्यचरितंवने ।।6.129.4।।

sa pṛṣṭorājaputreṇabṛśyāṃsamupaveśitḥ | ācacakṣetatassarvṃrāmasyacaritṃvane ||6.129.4||

Translation

बृस्याम् on the kusa grass, समुपवेशितः seated comfortably, राजपुत्रेण prince, पृष्टः joy, सः he, ततः then, वने in the forest, रामस्य Rama's, सर्वम् all, चरितम् history, आचचक्षे wish to hear

Meaning

Prince Bharata seated comfortably on kusa grass asked Hanuman for all the history that happened in the forest, wishing to hear from him.

यथाप्रव्राजितोरामोमातुर्दत्तौवरौतव । यथापुत्रशोकेनराजादशरथोमृतः ।।6.129.5।। यथादूतैस्त्वमानीतस्तूर्णंराजगृहात्प्रभो । त्वयायोध्यांप्रविष्टेनयथाराज्यं न चेप्सितम् ।।6.129.6।। चित्रकूटगिरिंगत्वाराज्येनामित्रकर्शनः । निमन्त्रितस्त्वयाभ्राताधर्ममाचरतासताम् ।।6.129.7।। स्थितेनराज्ञोवचनेयथाराज्यंविसर्जितम् । आर्यस्यमादुकेगृह्ययथासिपुनरागतः।।य6.129.8।। सर्वमेतन्महाबाहोयथावद्विदितंतव । त्वयिप्रतिप्रयातेतुयद्वृत्तंतन्निबोधमे ।।6.129.9।।

Translation

प्रभो O Lord, महाबाहो mighty armed, तव your, मातुः mother, वरौ boons यथा so, दत्तौ bestowed, रामः Rama, प्रव्राजितः to exile, राजा king, दशरथः Dasharatha, पुत्रशोकेन grief of son, यथा so, मृतः mother, त्वम् your, दूतैः envoys, राजगृहात् to the kng's palace, तूर्णम् soon, यथा so, आनीतः brought, अयोध्याम् Ayodhya, प्रविष्टेन having entered, त्वया by you, राज्यम् sovereign, यथा so, न च ईप्सितम् not willing, सताम् all, धर्मम् right, आचरता not accepted, त्वया by you, चित्रकूटगिरिम् Chitrakuta mountain, गत्वा going, अमित्रकर्शनः scourge of his enemies, भ्राता brother, यथा so, राज्येन kingdom, निमन्त्रितः made you as tradition goes, राज्ञः king, वचने words, स्थितेन following, यथा like that, राज्यम् kingdom, विसर्जितम् renouncing, आर्यस्य noble Rama's, पादुके sandals, गृह्य taking, यथा so also, पुनः again, आगतःअसि returned here, एतत् all this, सर्वम् everything, तव to you, यथावत् as it is, विदितम् known, त्वयि to you, प्रतिप्रयाते returned, यत् that which, वृत्तम् details, मे by you, निबोध known

Meaning

"O Lord, mighty armed Bharata! the boons bestowed on your mother, how Sri Rama went on exile, how king Dasharatha died out of grief of son, envoys bringing you to Ayodhya, entering the kingdom, your unwillingness to accept the sovereignty, going to Chitrakuta mountain, seeking your brother noble Rama, a scourge of enemies to accept the kingdom, renouncing the kingdom by Rama, taking his sandals, and again returning here, all this is known to you."

अपयातेत्वयितदासमुद्भ्रान्तमृगद्विजम् । परिध्युIनमिवात्यर्थंतद्वनंसमपद्यत ।।6.129.10।।

apayātetvayitadāsamudbhrāntamṛgadvijam | paridhyuInamivātyarthṃtadvanṃsamapadyata ||6.129.10||

Translation

त्वयि by you, तदा then, अपयाते gone away, समुद्भ्रान्तमृगद्विजम् beasts and birds scared of your army, अत्यर्थम् meaning, परिध्यIनम् agitated, इव like that, तत् then, वनम् forest, समपद्यत doleful appearance

"When you had gone away the beasts and birds scared of your army got agitated and had a doleful appearance."

YK-129-11Yuddha Kanda 129.11

तदथस्तिमृदितंघोरंसिंहव्याघ्रमृगाकुलम् । प्रविवेशाथविजनं स महद्दण्डकावनम् ।।6.129.11।।

tadathastimṛditṃghorṃsiṃhavyāghramṛgākulam | praviveśāthavijanṃ sa mahaddaṇḍakāvanam ||6.129.11||

Translation

सः he, अथ and then, हस्तिमृदितम् trampled by elephants, सिंसव्याघ्रमृगाकुलम् crowded with lions, tigers and deer, घोरम् dreadful, विजनम् devoid of people, महत् huge, तत् that, दण्डकावनम् Dandaka forest, प्रविवेश entered

Meaning

"Then he entered into dreadful Dandaka forest that was devoid of people which was crowded with lions, tigers, and deer, and trampled by the elephants."

तेषांपुरस्ताद्भलवान् गच्छतांगहनेवने । विनदन् सुमहानादंविराधःप्रत्यदृश्यत ।।6.129.12।।

teṣāṃpurastādbhalavān gacchatāṃgahanevane | vinadan sumahānādṃvirādhḥpratyadṛśyata ||6.129.12||

Translation

गहने dense, वने forest, गच्छताम् on going, तेषाम् advancing that way, पुरस्तात् before them, सुमहानादम् loud noise, विनदन् roaring, विराधः Viradha, प्रत्यदृश्यत saw there

तमुत्क्षिप्यमहानादमूर्ध्वबाहुमधोमुखम् । निखातेप्रक्षिपन्तिस्मवदन्तमिवकुञ्जरम् ।।6.129.13।।

tamutkṣipyamahānādamūrdhvabāhumadhomukham | nikhāteprakṣipantismavadantamivakuñjaram ||6.129.13||

Translation

ऊर्ध्वबाहुम् uplifted his arms, महानादम् huge noise, तम् him, उत्क्षिप्यनदन्तम् holding feet with hands, कुञ्जरमिव like an elephant, अधोमुखम् head bent low, निखाते dug up, प्रक्षिपन्तिस्म thrown into

Meaning

"That Viradha uplifted his arms and bent his head low screamed like an elephant. The three dug up a pit and threw him into it."

YK-129-14Yuddha Kanda 129.14

तत्कृत्वादुष्करंकर्मभ्रातरौरामलक्ष्मणौ । सायाह्नेशरभङ्गस्यरम्यमाश्रममीयतुः ।।6.129.14।।

tatkṛtvāduṣkarṃkarmabhrātaraurāmalakṣmaṇau | sāyāhneśarabhaṅgasyaramyamāśramamīyatuḥ ||6.129.14||

Translation

भ्रातरौ brothers, रामलक्ष्मणौ Rama and Lakshmana, दुष्करम् difficult, तत् that, कर्म do that task, कृत्वा having done, सायह्ने evening, शरभङ्गस्य Sarabhanga's, रम्यम् beautiful, आश्रमम् hermitage, ईयतुः reached

Meaning

"Both the brothers Rama and Lakshmana encountered Viradha who was difficult to attack and having completed their task, reached the beautiful hermitage of Sarabhanga in the evening."

शरभङ्गेदिवंप्राप्तेरामस्सत्यपराक्रमः । अभिवाद्यमुनीन्सर्वान्जनस्थानमुपागमत् ।।6.129.15।।

śarabhaṅgedivṃprāpterāmassatyaparākramḥ | abhivādyamunīnsarvānjanasthānamupāgamat ||6.129.15||

शरभङ्गे Sarabhanga, दिवम् heaven, प्राप्ते attained, सत्यपराक्रमः of truthful valour, रामः Rama, सर्वान् all, मुनीन् sages, अभिवाद्य greeting, जनस्थानम् Janasthana, उपागमत् reached

YK-129-16Yuddha Kanda 129.16

ततःपश्चाच्छूर्पणखानामरामपार्शमुपागता । ततोरामेणसन्दिष्टोलक्ष्मणस्सहसोत्थितः ।।6.129.16।। प्रगृह्यखङ्गंचिच्छेदकर्णनासेमहाबलः ।

tatḥpaścācchūrpaṇakhānāmarāmapārśamupāgatā | tatorāmeṇasandiṣṭolakṣmaṇassahasotthitḥ ||6.129.16|| pragṛhyakhaṅgṃcicchedakarṇanāsemahābalḥ |

Translation

पश्चात् later, शूर्पणखानाम named Surpanakha, रामपार्श्वम् close by Rama, उपागता came, ततः then, रामेण to Rama, सन्दिष्टः indication, महाबलः mighty, लक्ष्मणः Lakshmana, सहसा quickly, उत्थितः getting up, खङ्गम् sword, प्रगृह्य taking hold, कर्णवासे ears and nose, चिच्छेद cut off

Meaning

"Later came an ogre called Surpanakha close by Rama. Rama indicated to mighty Lakshmana, who got up quickly and cut off her ears and nose with a sword."

YK-129-17Yuddha Kanda 129.17

चतुर्दशसहस्राणिजनस्तान्निवासिनाम् ।।6.129.17।। हतानिवसतातत्रराघवेणमहात्मना ।

caturdaśasahasrāṇijanastānnivāsinām ||6.129.17|| hatānivasatātatrarāghaveṇamahātmanā |

Translation

तत्र there, वसता lived, महात्मना great soul, राघवेण Raghava, जनस्थान्निवासिनाम् while living at Janasthana, चतुर्दश fourteen, सहस्राणि thousand, हतानि killed

Meaning

"While the great soul Rama lived at Janasthana, he killed fourteen thousand ogres".

YK-129-18Yuddha Kanda 129.18

एकेनसहसङ्गम्यरामेणरणमूर्धनि ।।6.129.18।। अह्नश्चतुर्थभागेननिःशेषाराक्षसाःकृताः ।

ekenasahasaṅgamyarāmeṇaraṇamūrdhani ||6.129.18|| ahnaścaturthabhāgenaniḥśeṣārākṣasāḥkṛtāḥ |

Translation

एकेन alone, रामेण by Rama, रणमूर्धनि in forefront of combat, सहसङ्गम्य altogether, राक्षसाः Rakshasas, अह्नः in a day, चतुर्धभागेन fourteen thousands, निःशेषाः without leaving any one कृताः finished.

Meaning

"Rama alone in a day finished fourteen thousand Rakshasas standing alone in the forefront of the combat".

मबलामहावीर्यास्तपसोविघ्नकारिणः ।।6.129.19।। निहताराघवेणाजौदण्डकारण्यवासिनः ।

mabalāmahāvīryāstapasovighnakāriṇḥ ||6.129.19|| nihatārāghaveṇājaudaṇḍakāraṇyavāsinḥ |

Translation

राघवेण by Raghava, आजौ in the battle, महाबलाः mighty strong, महावीर्याः great heroes, तपसः penance, विघ्नकारिणः obstructing, दण्डकारण्यवासिनः living in Dandakaranya, निहताः killed

"Mighty strong heroic ogres obstructing the penance of sages living in Dandakaranya were killed by Raghava in the combat."

YK-129-20Yuddha Kanda 129.20

राक्षसाश्चविनिष्पिष्टाःखरश्चनिहतोरणे ।।6.129.20।। दूषणंचाग्रतोहत्वात्रिशिरास्तदनन्तम् ।

rākṣasāścaviniṣpiṣṭāḥkharaścanihatoraṇe ||6.129.20|| dūṣaṇṃcāgratohatvātriśirāstadanantam |

Translation

रणे in the battle, राक्षसाः च Rakshasas also, विनिष्पिष्टाः terminating, खरः च Khara, निहतः killed, अग्रतः elder brother, दूषणम् Dushana, हत्वा killed, तदनन्तरम् thereafter, त्रिशिराः Trisira

Meaning

"In the battle Rama terminated Khara and killed his elder brother Dushana and also Trisira thereafter."

YK-129-21-22Yuddha Kanda 129.21–22 (युग्मम्)

तस्तेनार्दिताबालारावणंसमुपागता ।।6.129.21।। रावणानुचरोघोरोमारीचोनामराक्षसः । लोभयामासवैदेहींभूत्वारत्नमयोमृगः ।।6.129.22।।

tastenārditābālārāvaṇṃsamupāgatā ||6.129.21|| rāvaṇānucaroghoromārīconāmarākṣasḥ | lobhayāmāsavaidehīṃbhūtvāratnamayomṛgḥ ||6.129.22||

Meaning

"Then Surpanakha afflicted by Rama returned to Ravana and informed. Ravana sent dreadful Rakshasa by name Maricha, who assumed the form of deer with precious stones (on body) created a desire for it in Vaidehi."

साराममब्रवीदृष्टवावैदेसीगृह्यतामिति । अयंमनोहरःकान्तआश्रमोनोभविष्यति ।।6.129.23।।

sārāmamabravīdṛṣṭavāvaidesīgṛhyatāmiti | ayṃmanoharḥkāntaāśramonobhaviṣyati ||6.129.23||

Translation

सावैदेही she, Vaidehi, दृष्टवा seeing नः requested, आश्रमः hermitage, मनोहरः beautiful, कान्तः desired, भविष्यति will, अयम् this, गृह्यताम् taking, इति this, रामम् to Rama, अब्रवीत् spoke

Meaning

"Seeing that deer Vaidehi spoke to Rama to capture it as she desired and that it was beautiful and will make the hermitage bright."

YK-129-24Yuddha Kanda 129.24

ततोरामोधनुष्पाणिर्मृगंतमनुधावति । स तंजघानधावन्तंशरेणानतपर्वणा ।।6.129.24।।

tatorāmodhanuṣpāṇirmṛgṃtamanudhāvati | sa tṃjaghānadhāvantṃśareṇānataparvaṇā ||6.129.24||

Translation

ततः then, रामःRama, धनुष्पाणिः wielder of bow, तंमृगम् that deer, अनुधावति chased, सः he, धावन्तम् chasing, तम् that, आपतपर्वणा followed, शरेण by arrow, जघान attacked

"Rama, wielder of bow, chased the deer and followed it chasing and attacked with his arrow."

अथसौम्य दशग्रीवोमृगंयातेतुराघवे । लक्ष्मणेचापिनिष्क्रान्तेप्रविवेशाश्रमंतदा ।।6.129.25।।

athasaumya daśagrīvomṛgṃyāteturāghave | lakṣmaṇecāpiniṣkrāntepraviveśāśramṃtadā ||6.129.25||

Translation

सौम्य gentle, राघवे Raghava, मृगम् deer, याते went, लक्ष्मणेचापि and Lakshmana too, निष्क्रान्ते went from there, अथ and then, दशग्रीवः ten headed, तदा then, आश्रमम् hermitage, प्रविवेश entered

"When gentle Raghava went after the deer and Lakshmana also went from there, the ten headed Ravana entered the hermitage."

जग्राहतरसासीतांग्रहःखेरोहिणीमिव । त्रातुकामंततोयुद्धेहत्वागृध्रंजटायुषम् ।।6.129.26।। प्रगृह्यसहसासीतांजगामाशु स राक्षसः ।

jagrāhatarasāsītāṃgrahḥkherohiṇīmiva | trātukāmṃtatoyuddhehatvāgṛdhrṃjaṭāyuṣam ||6.129.26|| pragṛhyasahasāsītāṃjagāmāśu sa rākṣasḥ |

तस्त्वद्भुतसङ्काशास्स्थिताःपर्वतमूर्धनि ।।6.129.27।। सीतांगृहीत्वागच्छन्तंवानराःपर्वतोपमाः । ददृशुर्मिस्मिताकारारावणंराक्षसाधिपम् ।।6.129.28।।

tastvadbhutasaṅkāśāssthitāḥparvatamūrdhani ||6.129.27|| sītāṃgṛhītvāgacchantṃvānarāḥparvatopamāḥ | dadṛśurmismitākārārāvaṇṃrākṣasādhipam ||6.129.28||

ततः then, अद्भुतसङ्काशाः wonderful feat, पर्वतमूर्धनि from the top of the mountain, स्थिताःstood, पर्वतोपमाः mountain like, वानराःVanara, सीताम् Sita, गृहीत्वा being taken, गच्छन्तम् going, राक्षसाधिपम् Lord of Rakshasas, रावणम् Ravana, विस्मिताकाराः of wonderful form, ददृशुः saw

Meaning

"Standing on the mountain top, the Vanaras who were like mountains in size watched the wonderful feat of the king of Rakshasas of wonderful form taking Sita."

ततशीघ्रतरंगत्वातद्विमानंमनोजवम् । आरुह्यसहवैदेह्यापुष्पकं स महाबलः ।।6.129.29।। प्रविवेशतदालङ्कांरावणोराक्षसेश्वरः ।

tataśīghratarṃgatvātadvimānṃmanojavam | āruhyasahavaidehyāpuṣpakṃ sa mahābalḥ ||6.129.29|| praviveśatadālaṅkāṃrāvaṇorākṣaseśvarḥ |

Translation

ततः then, राक्षसेश्वरः Rakshasa king, महाबलः mighty, रावणः Ravana, शीघ्रतरम् swiftly, गत्वा going, मनोजवम् at the speed of mind, तत् that, पुष्पकंविमानम् Pushpaka aerial car, वैदेह्यासह with Vaidehi, आरुह्य ascended, तदा then, लङ्काम् Lanka, प्रविवेश entered

Meaning

"Then the king of Rakshasas, mighty Ravana ascended with Vaidehi into the Pushpaka, an aerial car that went swiftly at the speed of the mind and entered Lanka."

तांसुवर्णपरिष्कारेशुभेमहतिवेश्मनि ।।6.129.30।। प्रवेश्यमैथिलींवाक्यैस्सान्त्वयामासरावणः ।

tāṃsuvarṇapariṣkāreśubhemahativeśmani ||6.129.30|| praveśyamaithilīṃvākyaissāntvayāmāsarāvaṇḥ |

सःरावणः that Ravana, तांमैथिलीम् that Mythili, सुवर्णपरिष्कारे mansion with golden walls, शुभे auspicious, महति huge, वेश्मनि mansion, मैथिलीम् Mythili, प्रवेश्य entered, वाक्यैः good words, सान्त्वयामास consoled

Meaning

"Ravana kept Mythili in an auspicious huge mansion with golden walls and consoled her with good words."

तृणवद्भाषितंतस्यतं च नैरृतपुङ्गवम् ।।6.129.31।। अचिन्तयन्तीवैदेहीह्यशोकवनिकांगता ।

tṛṇavadbhāṣitṃtasyatṃ ca nairṛtapuṅgavam ||6.129.31|| acintayantīvaidehīhyaśokavanikāṃgatā |

Translation

वैदेही Vaidehi, तस्य his, भाषितम् talk, तम् him, नैरृतपुङ्गवं च chief of Rakshasas, तृणवत् like a straw, अचिन्तयन्ती without caring him, अशोकवनिकाम् in the Ashoka grove, गता stayed

Meaning

"Vaidehi did not care to talk to the chief of Rakshasas. She ignored him like a straw and stayed in the Ashoka grove."

YK-129-32-33Yuddha Kanda 129.32–33 (युग्मम्)

न्यवर्तततदारामोमृगंहत्वातदावने ।।6.129.32।। निवर्तमानःकाकुत्स्थोदृष्टवागृध्रं स विव्यथे । गृध्रंहतंतदादृष्टवारामःप्रियतरंपितुः ।।6.129.33।।

nyavartatatadārāmomṛgṃhatvātadāvane ||6.129.32|| nivartamānḥkākutsthodṛṣṭavāgṛdhrṃ sa vivyathe | gṛdhrṃhatṃtadādṛṣṭavārāmḥpriyatarṃpituḥ ||6.129.33||

तदा then, रामः Rama, मृगम् deer, हत्वा killing, न्यवर्तत returned, तदा then, निवर्तमानः on his return, काकुत्स्थ: Kakuthsa, वने in the forest, गृध्रम् vulture, दृष्टवा seeing, विव्यथे attacked, तदा then, रामः Rama, पितुः father, प्रियतरम् dearer, गृध्रम् vulture, हतम् killed, दृष्टवा seen
