स चन्द्रकुमुदं रम्यं सार्ककारण्डवं शुभम्। तिष्यश्रवणकादम्बमभ्रशैवालशाद्वलम्।।5.57.1।। पुनर्वसुमहामीनं लोहिताङ्गमहाग्रहम्। ऐरावतमहाद्वीपं स्वातिहंसविलोलितम्।।5.57.2।। वातसङ्घातजातोर्मि चन्द्रांशुशिशिराम्बुमत्। भुजङ्गयक्षगन्धर्वप्रबुद्धकमलोत्पलम्।।5.57.3।। हनुमान्मारुतगतिर्महानौरिव सागरम्। अपारमपरिश्रान्तः पुप्लुवे गगनार्णवम् ।।5.57.4।।

sa candrakumudṃ ramyṃ sārkakāraṇḍavṃ śubham| tiṣyaśravaṇakādambamabhraśaivālaśādvalam||5.57.1|| punarvasumahāmīnṃ lohitāṅgamahāgraham| airāvatamahādvīpṃ svātihṃsavilolitam||5.57.2|| vātasaṅghātajātormi candrāṃśuśiśirāmbumat| bhujaṅgayakṣagandharvaprabuddhakamalotpalam||5.57.3|| hanumānmārutagatirmahānauriva sāgaram| apāramapariśrāntḥ pupluve gaganārṇavam ||5.57.4||

Translation

मारुतगतिः like the Windgod, हनुमान् Hanuman, अपरिश्रान्तः nwearied, सचन्द्रकुमुदम् Moon for a white lotus, सार्ककारण्डवम् Sun for a waterfowl, शुभम् auspicious, तिष्यश्रवणकादम्बम् Tishya and Shravana for sweetvoiced swans, अभ्रशैवालशाद्वलम् clouds for duckweeds and grassy spots on the shores, पुनर्वसुमहामीनम् Punarvasu constellation for large fish, लोहिताङ्गमहाग्रहम् the planet Mars for a crocodile, ऐरावतमहाद्वीपम् Airavata for a large island, स्वातिहंसविलोलितम् Swati for swan in water, वातसङ्घातजातोर्मि waves produced by wind for its billows, चन्द्रांशुश्शिराम्बुमत् cool Moonbeams for cold waters, भुजङ्गयक्षगन्धर्वप्रबुद्धकमलोत्पलम् nagas, yakshas, gandharvas together as fully blossomed lotuses, अपारम् गगनार्णवम् another ocean like, महानौ: huge boat, सागरम् इव like the ocean, पुप्लुवे flew across.

Meaning

Hanuman leaped ike the Windgod, unwearied across the sky, as a huge boat crosses an ocean. The ocean was graced with a swan, the sky with constellation of Swati with fullblown lotuses and water lilies, like the nagas, yakshas, and gandharvas gathered together. The Moon in the sky was like a white lotus, the Sun like a waterfowl, the auspicious Tishya and Shravana like the sweetvoiced swans, and the clouds like duckweeds and green grassy spots on the shore. The Punarvasu star was like a large fish and the planet Mars was like a crocodile. Airavata was like the great island. The waves produced by the wind were like cool moonlight in the cold water.

SK-57-5-6Sundara Kanda 57.5–6 (युग्मम्)

ग्रसमान इवाकाशं ताराधिपमिवोल्लिखन्। हरन्निव सनक्षत्रं गगनं सार्कमण्डलम्।।5.57.5।। मारुतस्यात्मजः श्रीमान्कपिर्व्योमचरो महान्। हनुमान्मेघजालानि विकर्षन्निव गच्छति।।5.57.6।।

grasamāna ivākāśṃ tārādhipamivollikhan| haranniva sanakṣatrṃ gaganṃ sārkamaṇḍalam||5.57.5|| mārutasyātmajḥ śrīmānkapirvyomacaro mahān| hanumānmeghajālāni vikarṣanniva gacchati||5.57.6||

Translation

मारुतस्य Windgod's, आत्मजः son, श्रीमान् prosperous, महान् great, कपिः monkey, हनुमान् Hanuman, व्योमचरः who moves through the wind, आकाशम् sky, ग्रसमानः इव as if swallowing, ताराधिपम् lord of stars, उल्लिखन्निव as if scratching, सनक्षत्रम् with the stars, सार्कमण्डलम् constellation of Sun, गगनम् sky, हरन्निव as if seizing, मेघजालानि विकर्षन्निव drawing the clusters of clouds, गच्छति flew.

Meaning

Great Hanuman, son of the Windgod, flew through the abode of the Windgod as if he was swallowing the space, scratching the Moon, lord of the stars, as if seizing the heavens along with the constellation of Sun and stars and as though he was drawing the clusters of clouds.

SK-57-7Sundara Kanda 57.7

पाण्डुरारुणवर्णानि नीलमाञ्जिष्ठकानि च। हरितारुणवर्णानि महाभ्राणि चकाशिरे।।5.57.7।।

pāṇḍurāruṇavarṇāni nīlamāñjiṣṭhakāni ca| haritāruṇavarṇāni mahābhrāṇi cakāśire||5.57.7||

Translation

पाण्डरारुणवर्णानि of white and black colour, नीलमाञ्जिष्ठकानि च and of blue yellow colour, हरितारुणवर्णानि of greenish red colour, महाभ्राणि shone briliantly, चकाशिरे made their appearance.

Meaning

(In contact with Hanuman) the clouds shone forth brilliantly in white and black, in blue and yellow and in greenish red colour.

SK-57-8Sundara Kanda 57.8

प्रविशन्नभ्रजालानि निष्पतंश्च पुनः पुनः। प्रच्छन्नश्च प्रकाशश्च चन्द्रमा इव लक्ष्यते।।5.57.8।।

praviśannabhrajālāni niṣpatṃśca punḥ punḥ| pracchannaśca prakāśaśca candramā iva lakṣyate||5.57.8||

Translation

अभ्रजालानि into the mass of clouds, प्रविशन् entering, पुनः पुनः again and again, निष्पतंश्च disappearing, प्रच्छन्नश्च covered by, प्रकाशश्च shining again, चन्द्रमाः like the Moon, लक्ष्यते was appearing.

Meaning

With his exist and entrances into the mass of clouds, his appearances and disappearances among the clouds, he looked like the Moon.

SK-57-9Sundara Kanda 57.9

विविधाभ्रघनापन्नगोचरो धवलाम्बरः। दृश्यादृश्यतनुर्वीरस्तदा चन्द्रायतेऽम्बरे।।5.57.9।।

vividhābhraghanāpannagocaro dhavalāmbarḥ| dṛśyādṛśyatanurvīrastadā candrāyate'mbare||5.57.9||

Translation

तदा then, विविधाभ्रघनासन्नगोचरः passing through the clouds clad in white, धवळाम्बरः white sky, दृश्यादृश्यतनुः appearing and disappearing, वीरः hero, अम्बरे in the sky, चन्द्रायते like the Moon.

Meaning

Passing through the clouds, appearing and disappearing, the heroic Hanuman clad in white was like the Moon in the white sky.

SK-57-10Sundara Kanda 57.10

तार्क्ष्यायमाणो गगने बभासे वायुनन्दनः। दारयन्मेघबृन्दानि निष्पतंश्च पुनः पुनः।।5.57.10।। नदन्नादेन महता मेघस्वनमहास्वनः।

tārkṣyāyamāṇo gagane babhāse vāyunandanḥ| dārayanmeghabṛndāni niṣpatṃśca punḥ punḥ||5.57.10|| nadannādena mahatā meghasvanamahāsvanḥ|

Translation

मेघबृन्दानि through flakes of clouds, दारयन् making way, पुनः पुनः again and again, निष्पतंश्च disappearing, महता great, नादेन in loud voice, नदन् noise, मेघस्वनमहास्वनः roaring like thundering clouds, वायुनन्दनः the delight of the Windgod, गगने in the sky, तार्क्ष्यायमाणः like Garuda, बभासे shone.

Meaning

As he made his way through flakes of clouds, again and again appearing and disappearing, Hanuman the delight of the Windgod shone in the sky roaring like a thundering cloud. He looked like Garuda.

SK-57-11-12Sundara Kanda 57.11–12 (युग्मम्)

प्रवरान्राक्षसान् हत्वा नाम विश्राव्य चात्मनः।।5.57.11।। आकुलां नगरीं कृत्वा व्यथयित्वा च रावणम्। अर्दयित्वा बलं घोरं वैदेहीमभिवाद्य च।।5.57.12।। आजगाम महातेजाः पुनर्मध्येन सागरम्।

pravarānrākṣasān hatvā nāma viśrāvya cātmanḥ||5.57.11|| ākulāṃ nagarīṃ kṛtvā vyathayitvā ca rāvaṇam| ardayitvā balṃ ghorṃ vaidehīmabhivādya ca||5.57.12|| ājagāma mahātejāḥ punarmadhyena sāgaram|

Translation

महातेजाः glorious, प्रवरान् eminent, राक्षसान् ogres हत्वा having killed, आत्मनः himself, नाम name, विश्राव्य widely known, नगरीम् in the city, आकुलाम् having caused havoc, कृत्वा done, रावणम् Ravana, व्यथयित्वा having caused sorrow, घोरम् terrific, बलम् army, अर्दयित्वा having tormented, वैदेहीम् to Vaidehi, अभिवाद्य च having offered salutation, पुनः again, सागरं मध्येन to cross the ocean, आजगाम departed.

Meaning

The glorious Hanuman, having killed eminent ogres and thereby making himself widely known, having caused havoc to the city of Lanka and terrific sorrow to Ravana by tormenting the army, offered salutations to Vaidehi from midocean and continued his journey.

SK-57-13Sundara Kanda 57.13

पर्वतेन्द्रं सुनाभं च समुपस्पृश्य वीर्यवान्।।5.57.13।। ज्यामुक्त इव नाराचो महावेगोऽभ्युपागतः।

parvatendrṃ sunābhṃ ca samupaspṛśya vīryavān||5.57.13|| jyāmukta iva nārāco mahāvego'bhyupāgatḥ|

Translation

वीर्यवान् hero, पर्वतेन्द्रम् lord of mountains,सुनाभं च from the centre, समुपस्पृश्य touched fondly, ज्यामुक्तः telling everything, नाराचः इव like the arrow from a powerful bowstring, महावेगः with great speed, अभ्युपागतः went.

Meaning

The valiant Hanuman touched the lord of mountains fondly and went with great speed just as an arrow released from the centre of a powerful bowstring.

SK-57-14Sundara Kanda 57.14

स किञ्चिदनुसम्प्राप्तः समालोक्य महागिरिम्।।5.57.14।। महेन्द्रं मेघसङ्काशं ननाद हरिपुङ्गवः।

sa kiñcidanusamprāptḥ samālokya mahāgirim||5.57.14|| mahendrṃ meghasaṅkāśṃ nanāda haripuṅgavḥ|

Translation

सः he, हरिपुङ्गवः chief of monkeys, महागिरिम् great mountain, मेघसङ्काशम् resembling the mass of cloud, महेन्द्रम् Mahendra, किञ्चित् a little, अनुसम्प्राप्तः coming near, समालोक्य beholding, ननाद thundered.

Meaning

The chief of the monkeys arrived near, and beholding the face of the Mahendra mountain, which resembled a mass of clouds, thundered.

SK-57-15Sundara Kanda 57.15

स पूरयामास कपिर्दिशो दश समन्ततः।।5.57.15।। नदन्नादेन महता मेघस्वनमहास्वनः।

sa pūrayāmāsa kapirdiśo daśa samantatḥ||5.57.15|| nadannādena mahatā meghasvanamahāsvanḥ|

Translation

मेघस्वनमहास्वनः one who makes a thundering noise, सः कपिः that Hanuman, नदन् noise, महता great, नादेन by the noise, दश दिशः all the ten directions, समन्ततः all over, पूरयामास filled.

Meaning

The thundering noise of Hanuman filled all the ten directions with great sound.

SK-57-16Sundara Kanda 57.16

स तं देशमनुप्राप्तः सुहृद्धर्शनलालसः।।5.57.16।। ननाद हरिशार्दूलो लाङ्गूलं चाप्यकम्पयत्।

sa tṃ deśamanuprāptḥ suhṛddharśanalālasḥ||5.57.16|| nanāda hariśārdūlo lāṅgūlṃ cāpyakampayat|

Translation

तं देशम् that place, अनुप्राप्तः having sighted, सुहृद्धर्शनलालसः waiting to see his companions, सः हरिशार्दूलः that tiger among monkeys, ननाद made loud noise, लाङ्गूलम् his tail, अकम्पयच्च shook in joy.

Meaning

Having sighted the place of his companions and waiting to see them for long that tiger among monkeys made a loud noise and shook his tail in joy.

SK-57-17Sundara Kanda 57.17

तस्य नानद्यमानस्य सुपर्णचरिते पथि।।5.57.17।। फलतीवास्य घोषेण गगनं सार्कमण्डलम्।

tasya nānadyamānasya suparṇacarite pathi||5.57.17|| phalatīvāsya ghoṣeṇa gaganṃ sārkamaṇḍalam|

Translation

सुपर्णचरिते the path way of Suparna, पथि lord, नानद्यमानस्य making terrific sound, अस्य by his, घोषेण sound, सार्कमण्डलम् the Sun's orbit, गगनम् the sky, फलति इव as if splitting.

Meaning

By the terrific sounds made by Hanuman in joy, it seemed as though the pathway of Garuda, the sky along with the Sun's orbit was splitting.

SK-57-18-19Sundara Kanda 57.18–19 (युग्मम्)

ये तु तत्रोत्तरे तीरे समुद्रस्य महाबलाः।।5.57.18।। पूर्वं संविष्ठिताश्शूरा वायुपुत्रदिदृक्षवः। महतो वातनुन्नस्य तोयदस्येव गर्जितम्।।5.57.19।। शुश्रुवुस्ते तदा घोषमूरुवेगं हनूमतः।

ye tu tatrottare tīre samudrasya mahābalāḥ||5.57.18|| pūrvṃ sṃviṣṭhitāśśūrā vāyuputradidṛkṣavḥ| mahato vātanunnasya toyadasyeva garjitam||5.57.19|| śuśruvuste tadā ghoṣamūruvegṃ hanūmatḥ|

Translation

तत्र thereafter, समुद्रस्य ocean's, उत्तरे तीरे northern shore, पूर्वम् earlier, संविष्ठिताः waiting, महाबलाः powerful (monkeys), शूराः brave, वायुपुत्रदिदृक्षवः awaiting the arrival of the son of the Windgod, ये those, ते what, तदा then, वातनुन्नस्य by the impact of sweeping motion of his thighs, महतः great, तोयदस्य stormy cloud's, गर्जितम् इव like the thundering noise, हनूमतः of Hanuman, घोषम् roaring, ऊरुवेगम् by the speed, शुश्रुवुः heard.

Meaning

Thereafter the brave and powerful monkeys waiting on the northern shore of the ocean for the arrival of the son of the Windgod, heard the roar and thundering sound of the stormy cloud produced by the sweeping motion of Hanuman's thighs propelled by the speed of his movement.

SK-57-20Sundara Kanda 57.20

ते दीनमनसस्सर्वे शुश्रुवुः काननौकसः।।5.57.20।। वानरेन्द्रस्य निर्घोषं पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम्।

te dīnamanasassarve śuśruvuḥ kānanaukasḥ||5.57.20|| vānarendrasya nirghoṣṃ parjanyaninadopamam|

Translation

दीनमनसः dejected at heart, ते they, सर्वे all, काननौकसः with eagerness, वानरेन्द्रस्य chief of vanara's, पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम् like the thundering of clouds, निर्घोषम् noise, शुश्रुवुः heard.

Meaning

All the vanaras who were feeling dejected and waiting anxiously heard the noise of Hanuman that sounded like a thundering cloud.

SK-57-21Sundara Kanda 57.21

निशम्य नदतो नादं वानरास्ते समन्ततः।।5.57.21।। बभूवुरुत्सुकास्सर्वे सुहृद्धर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः।

niśamya nadato nādṃ vānarāste samantatḥ||5.57.21|| babhūvurutsukāssarve suhṛddharśanakāṅkṣiṇḥ|

Translation

समन्ततः together, सर्वे all of them, ते वानराः those vanaras, नदतः chattering, नादम् voice, निशम्य hearing, सुहृद्धर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः waiting to see their friend, उत्सुकाः eager, बभूवुः became.

Meaning

On hearing the loud voice of Hanuman, all the vanaras were longing to see their friend.

SK-57-22Sundara Kanda 57.22

जाम्बवान् स हरिश्रेष्ठः प्रीतिसंहृष्टमानसः।।5.57.22।। उपामन्त्र्य हरीन् सर्वानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्।

jāmbavān sa hariśreṣṭhḥ prītisṃhṛṣṭamānasḥ||5.57.22|| upāmantrya harīn sarvānidṃ vacanamabravīt|

Translation

हरिश्रेष्ठः chief of vanaras, सः जाम्बवान् that Jambavan, प्रीतिसंहृष्टमानसः very happy at heart, सर्वान् all, हरीन् monkeys, उपामन्त्य्र called, इदम् these, वचनम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Jambavan the chief of vanaras became very happy at heart and called all the vanaras and spoke:

SK-57-23Sundara Kanda 57.23

सर्वथा कृतकार्योऽसौ हनुमान्नात्र संशयः।।5.57.23।। न ह्यस्याकृतकार्यस्य नाद एवंविधो भवेत्।

sarvathā kṛtakāryo'sau hanumānnātra sṃśayḥ||5.57.23|| na hyasyākṛtakāryasya nāda evṃvidho bhavet|

Translation

असौ Oh that, हनुमान् Hanuman, सर्वथा always, कृतकार्यः successful, अकृतकार्यस्य if he was not successsful, अस्य his, नादः sound, एवंविधः in this manner, न भवेत् हि will not be so.

Meaning

"Oh Hanuman is always successful. If he has not, he would not make sounds in this manner".

SK-57-24Sundara Kanda 57.24

तस्य बाहूरुवेगं च निनादं च महात्मनः।।5.57.24।। निशम्य हरयो हृष्टाः समुत्पेतुस्ततस्ततः।

tasya bāhūruvegṃ ca ninādṃ ca mahātmanḥ||5.57.24|| niśamya harayo hṛṣṭāḥ samutpetustatastatḥ|

Translation

महात्मनः great self, तस्य his, बहूरुवेगं च speed of his arms and thighs, निनादं च sounds, निशम्य rejoiced, हृष्टाः joyful, हरयः vanaras, ततस्ततः then and there, समुत्पेतुः jumped in joy.

Meaning

Hearing the sound of his dashing movements of arms and thighs the vanaras jumped about in joy, then and there.

SK-57-25Sundara Kanda 57.25

ते नगाग्रान्नगाग्राणि शिखराच्छिखराणि च।।5.57.25।। प्रहृष्टाः समपद्यन्त हनूमन्तं दिदृक्षवः।

te nagāgrānnagāgrāṇi śikharācchikharāṇi ca||5.57.25|| prahṛṣṭāḥ samapadyanta hanūmantṃ didṛkṣavḥ|

Translation

ते those vanaras, प्रहृष्टाः very happy, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman, दिदृक्षवः longing to see him, नगाग्रात् from the top of a tree, नगाग्राणि to another tree top, शिखरात् from the peak of mountain, शिखराणि च to another peak of a mountain, समपद्यन्त jumped.

Meaning

The vanaras were very happy. Longing to see Hanuman, they jumped from one tree top to another and from one peak of a mountain to the other.

SK-57-26Sundara Kanda 57.26

ते प्रीताः पादपाग्रेषु गृह्य शाखाः सुविष्ठिताः।।5.57.26।। वासांसीव प्रशाखाश्च समाविध्यन्त वानराः।

te prītāḥ pādapāgreṣu gṛhya śākhāḥ suviṣṭhitāḥ||5.57.26|| vāsāṃsīva praśākhāśca samāvidhyanta vānarāḥ|

Translation

ते वानराः those vanaras, प्रीताः happily, पादपाग्रेषु from the tree top, शाखाः branches, गृह्य holding, सुविष्ठिताः waiting, प्रशाखाः the branches, वासांसीव like clothes, समाविध्यन्त shook them.

Meaning

Waiting for Hanuman, the vanaras jumped from the tree tops holding the branches. They shook the branches just like clothes to welcome friends.

SK-57-27Sundara Kanda 57.27

गिरिगह्वरसंलीनो यथा गर्जति मारुतः।।5.57.27।। एवं जगर्ज बलवान् हनुमान्मारुतात्मजः।

girigahvarasṃlīno yathā garjati mārutḥ||5.57.27|| evṃ jagarja balavān hanumānmārutātmajḥ|

Translation

गिरिगह्वरसंलीनः like the wind in the mountain caves, मारुतः wind, यथा similarly, गर्जति roared, बलवान् powerful, मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, हनुमान् Hanuman, एवम् in that way, जगर्ज roared.

Meaning

Hanuman, the powerful son of the Windgod roared like the wind captured in a mountain cave would.

SK-57-28Sundara Kanda 57.28

तमभ्रघनसङ्काशमापतन्तं महाकपिम्।।5.57.28।। दृष्ट्वा ते वानरास्सर्वे तस्थुः प्राञ्जलयस्तदा।

tamabhraghanasaṅkāśamāpatantṃ mahākapim||5.57.28|| dṛṣṭvā te vānarāssarve tasthuḥ prāñjalayastadā|

Translation

तदा then, अभ्रघनसङ्काशम् resembling heavy cloud, आपतन्तम् approaching, तं महाकपिम् that great vanara, दृष्ट्वा having seen, ते those, वानराः vanaras, प्राञ्जलयः with folded hands, तस्थुः stood.

Meaning

(On seeing) Hanuman, who was resembling a heavy cloud approaching, the vanaras stood with folded hands.

SK-57-29Sundara Kanda 57.29

ततस्तु वेगवांस्तस्य गिरेर्गिरिनिभः कपिः।।5.57.29।। निपपात महेन्द्रस्य शिखरे पादपाकुले।

tatastu vegavāṃstasya girergirinibhḥ kapiḥ||5.57.29|| nipapāta mahendrasya śikhare pādapākule|

Translation

ततः thereafter, गिरिनिभः of mountain size, वेगवान् with great speed, कपिः monkey, तस्य on that, महेन्द्रस्य Mahendra's, गिरेः mountain, पादपाकुले full of trees, शिखरे summit, निपपात descended.

Meaning

Thereafter the vanara, who resembled a mountain, descended with great speed on the summit of mount Mahendra full of trees.

SK-57-30Sundara Kanda 57.30

हर्षेणापूर्यमाणोऽसौ रम्ये पर्वतनिर्झरे।।5.57.30।। छिन्नपक्ष इवाऽकाशात्पपात धरणीधरः।

harṣeṇāpūryamāṇo'sau ramye parvatanirjhare||5.57.30|| chinnapakṣa ivā'kāśātpapāta dharaṇīdharḥ|

Translation

हर्षेण आपूर्यमाणः full of immeasurable joy, असौ that, छिन्नपक्षः with wings cut off, धरणीधरः इव like a mountain, रम्ये delighted, पर्वन्तिर्झरे on the bank of the mountain stream, आकाशात् from the sky, पपात landed.

Meaning

Overwhelmed with immeasurable joy, Hanuman descended from the sky like the mountain with its wings cut off and dropped on the bank of a mountain stream.

SK-57-31-32Sundara Kanda 57.31–32 (युग्मम्)

ततस्ते प्रीतमनसस्सर्वे वानरपुङ्गवाः।।5.57.31।। हनुमन्तं महात्मानं परिवार्योपतस्थिरे। परिवार्य च ते सर्वे परां प्रीतिमुपागताः।।5.57.32।।

tataste prītamanasassarve vānarapuṅgavāḥ||5.57.31|| hanumantṃ mahātmānṃ parivāryopatasthire| parivārya ca te sarve parāṃ prītimupāgatāḥ||5.57.32||

Translation

ततः then, सर्वे all, ते of them, वानरपुङ्गवाः vanara leaders, प्रीतमनसः happy at heart, महात्मानम् that great self, हनुमन्तम् to Hanuman, परिवार्य surrounded, उपतस्थिरे without moving, ते सर्वे all of them, परिवार्य around, पराम् extreme, प्रीतिम् joyful, उपागताः became.

Meaning

Feeling very happy at heart all the vanara leaders gathered around Hanuman. They stood motionless with extreme happiness.

SK-57-33Sundara Kanda 57.33

प्रहृष्टवदना स्सर्वे तमरोगमुपागतम्। उपायनानि चादाय मूलानि च फलानि च।।5.57.33।। प्रत्यर्चयन् हरिश्रेष्ठं हरयो मारुतात्मजम्।

prahṛṣṭavadanā ssarve tamarogamupāgatam| upāyanāni cādāya mūlāni ca phalāni ca||5.57.33|| pratyarcayan hariśreṣṭhṃ harayo mārutātmajam|

Translation

सर्वे हरयः the vanaras, प्रहृष्टवदनाः face filled with joy, मूलानि च even roots, फलानि च and fruits, उपायनानि gifts, आदाय offered, आरोगम् without being hurt, उपागतम् returned, हरिश्रेष्ठम् foremost of monkeys, मारुतात्मजम् son of the Windgod, प्रत्यर्पयन् offered salutations.

Meaning

The vanaras were filled with joy seeing Hanuman who returned unhurt. They offered roots and fruits to him. Hanuman on his part offered salutations to the foremost of the monkeys.

SK-57-34Sundara Kanda 57.34

हनुमांस्तु गुरून् वृद्धाञ्जाम्बवत्प्रमुखांस्तदा।।5.57.34।। कुमारमङ्गदं चैव सोऽवन्दत महाकपिः।

hanumāṃstu gurūn vṛddhāñjāmbavatpramukhāṃstadā||5.57.34|| kumāramaṅgadṃ caiva so'vandata mahākapiḥ|

Translation

तदा then, महाकपिः great monkey, हनुमांस्तु Hanuman also, गुरून् preceptors, वृद्धान् elders, जाम्बवत्प्रमुखान् Jambavan and other leaders, कुमारम् to the young, अङ्गदं चैव Angada also, अवन्दत saluted.

Meaning

The great Hanuman also offered salutations to elders, preceptors such as Jambavan and other leaders. He also saluted the young Angada.

SK-57-35Sundara Kanda 57.35

स ताभ्यां पूजितः पूज्यः कपिभिश्च प्रसादितः।।5.57.35।। दृष्टा सीतेति विक्रान्त स्संक्षेपेण न्यवेदयत्।

sa tābhyāṃ pūjitḥ pūjyḥ kapibhiśca prasāditḥ||5.57.35|| dṛṣṭā sīteti vikrānta ssṃkṣepeṇa nyavedayat|

Translation

विक्रान्तः valiant one, पूज्यः worthy of worship, सः he, ताभ्याम् both, पूजितः having been honoured, कपिभिः by vanaras also, प्रसादितः pleased, सीता Sita, दृष्टा saw, इति this, सङ्क्षेपेण briefly, न्यवेदयत् revealed.

Meaning

The valiant Hanuman worthy of worship having been honoured by both Jambavan and Angada was pleased. He responded briefly, saying 'Saw Sita'.

SK-57-36Sundara Kanda 57.36

निषसाद च हस्तेन गृहीत्वा वालिनस्सुतम्।।5.57.36।। रमणीये वनोद्देशे महेन्द्रस्य गिरेस्तदा।

niṣasāda ca hastena gṛhītvā vālinassutam||5.57.36|| ramaṇīye vanoddeśe mahendrasya girestadā|

Translation

तदा then, वालिनः Vali's, सुतम् son, हस्तेन with hand, गृहीत्वा holding, महेन्द्रस्य गिरेः Mahendra mountain, रमणीये beautiful, वनोद्धेशे place of the garden, निषसाद च sat down.

Meaning

Then holding the hand of Vali's son he sat down at a beautiful location of the garden of mountain Mahendra.

SK-57-37-39Sundara Kanda 57.37–39 (त्रिकम्)

हनुमानब्रवीद्धृष्टस्तदा तान्वानरर्षभान्।।5.57.37।। अशोकवनिकासंस्था दृष्टा सा जनकात्मजा। रक्षमाणा सुघोराभी राक्षसीभिरनिन्दिता।।5.57.38।। एकवेणीधरा बाला रामदर्शनलालसा। उपवासपरिश्रान्ता जटिला मलिना कृशा।।5.57.39।।

hanumānabravīddhṛṣṭastadā tānvānararṣabhān||5.57.37|| aśokavanikāsṃsthā dṛṣṭā sā janakātmajā| rakṣamāṇā sughorābhī rākṣasībhiraninditā||5.57.38|| ekaveṇīdharā bālā rāmadarśanalālasā| upavāsapariśrāntā jaṭilā malinā kṛśā||5.57.39||

Translation

तदा then, हृष्टः became happy, हनुमान् Hanuman, तान् them, वानरर्षभान् bull among vanaras, अब्रवीत् said, अशोकवनिकासंस्था in the groves of Ashoka trees, सुघोराभिः very dreadful, राक्षसीभिः demons, रक्ष्यमाणा guarded by, अनिन्दिता blameless lady, एकवेणीधरा having one braid, बाला young, रामदर्शनलालसा with eagerness to see Rama, उपवासपरिश्रान्ता emaciated due to fasting, जटिला hair matted, मलिना soiled, कृशा weakened, सा जनकात्मजा that Janaka's daughter, दृष्टा saw.

Meaning

Hanuman felt happy and told Angada, the bull of vanaras, "I saw Sita in the groves of Ashoka guarded by dreadful ogres. She is blameless, eager to see Rama. She is wearing a single braid of hair. She is young and emaciated due to fasting. Her hair is matted and soiled".

SK-57-40Sundara Kanda 57.40

ततो दृष्टेति वचनं महार्थममृतोपमम्। निशम्य मारुतेस्सर्वे मुदिता वानराभवन्।।5.57.40।।

tato dṛṣṭeti vacanṃ mahārthamamṛtopamam| niśamya mārutessarve muditā vānarābhavan||5.57.40||

Translation

ततः then, दृष्टा seeing, इति thus, मारुतेः Hanuman, महार्थम् most meaningful, अमृतोपमम् like nectar, वचनम् these words, निशम्य hearing, सर्वे all, वानराः vanara, मुदिताः joyful, अभवन् remained.

Meaning

Then hearing Hanuman's meaningful and nectarlike words all the vanaras rejoiced.

SK-57-41Sundara Kanda 57.41

क्ष्वेलन्त्यन्ये नदन्त्यन्ये गर्जन्त्यन्ये महाबलाः। चक्रुः किलकिलामन्ये प्रतिगर्जन्ति चापरे।।5.57.41।।

kṣvelantyanye nadantyanye garjantyanye mahābalāḥ| cakruḥ kilakilāmanye pratigarjanti cāpare||5.57.41||

Translation

महाबलाः powerful, अन्ये others, क्ष्वेलन्ति howled, अन्ये some others, नदन्ति chattered, अन्ये some others, गर्जन्ति roared like lion, अन्ये some, किलकिलाम् screamed, चक्रुः round and round, आपरे went, प्रतिगर्जन्ति echoed the roaring.

Meaning

Some powerful vanaras howled, some chattered, some roared and some screamed, going round and round and others echoed the sounds.

SK-57-42Sundara Kanda 57.42

केचिदुच्छ्रितलाङ्गूलाः प्रहृष्टाः कपिकुञ्जराः। आयताञ्चितदीर्घाणि लाङ्गूलानि प्रविव्यधुः।।5.57.42।।

keciducchritalāṅgūlāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ kapikuñjarāḥ| āyatāñcitadīrghāṇi lāṅgūlāni pravivyadhuḥ||5.57.42||

Translation

प्रहृष्टाः very exited with joy, केचित् a few, कपिकुञ्जराः elephants among monkeys, उच्छ्रितलाङ्गूलाः lifted their tails, आयताञ्चितदीर्घाणि beautiful and long ones, लाङ्गूलानि tails, प्रविव्यधुः hit on the ground.

Meaning

Some elephantlike vanaras who were excited and felt overjoyed lifted their long and beautiful tails and hit them on the ground.

SK-57-43Sundara Kanda 57.43

अपरे च हनूमन्तं वानरा वारणोपमम्। आप्लुत्य गिरिशृङ्गेभ्यस्संस्पृशन्ति स्म हर्षिताः।।5.57.43।।

apare ca hanūmantṃ vānarā vāraṇopamam| āplutya giriśṛṅgebhyassṃspṛśanti sma harṣitāḥ||5.57.43||

Translation

आपरे a few, वानराः vanaras, हर्षिताः in happiness, गिरिशृङ्गेभ्यः from the top of the mountain, आप्लुत्य jumped down, वारणोपमम् elephantlike, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman, संस्पृशन्ति स्म hugged.

Meaning

A few vanaras jumped down from the mountain top and hugged the elephantlike Hanuman.

SK-57-44Sundara Kanda 57.44

उक्तवाक्यं हनूमन्तमङ्गदस्तमथाब्रवीत्। सर्वेषां हरिवीराणां मध्ये वचनमुत्तमम्।।5.57.44।।

uktavākyṃ hanūmantamaṅgadastamathābravīt| sarveṣāṃ harivīrāṇāṃ madhye vacanamuttamam||5.57.44||

Translation

अथ and then, अङ्गदः Angada, उक्तवाक्यम् words spoken, हनूमन्तम् by Hanuman, सर्वेषाम् all of them, हरिवीराणाम् vanara heroes, मध्ये midst, उत्तमम् best, वचनम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

And hearing Hanuman's sweetest words, Angada addressed the heroic vanaras

SK-57-45Sundara Kanda 57.45

सत्त्वे वीर्ये न ते कश्चित्समो वानर विद्यते। यदवप्लुत्य विस्तीर्णं सागरं पुनरागतः।।5.57.45।।

sattve vīrye na te kaścitsamo vānara vidyate| yadavaplutya vistīrṇṃ sāgarṃ punarāgatḥ||5.57.45||

Translation

वानर vanara, यत् such, विस्तीर्णम् wide, सागरम् ocean, अवप्लुत्य leaping, पुनः again, आगतः returned, सत्त्वे in strength, वीर्ये in valour, ते to you, समः equal, कश्चित् none, न विद्यते not known.

Meaning

"O vanara you have leaped such a wide ocean and have returned. In strength and valour. There is none equal to you.

SK-57-46Sundara Kanda 57.46

अहो स्वामिनि ते भक्तिरहो वीर्यमहो धृतिः। दिष्ट्या दृष्टा त्वया देवी रामपत्नी यशस्विनी।।5.57.46।। दिष्ट्या त्यक्ष्यति काकुत्स्थ श्शोकं सीतावियोगजम्।

aho svāmini te bhaktiraho vīryamaho dhṛtiḥ| diṣṭyā dṛṣṭā tvayā devī rāmapatnī yaśasvinī||5.57.46|| diṣṭyā tyakṣyati kākutstha śśokṃ sītāviyogajam|

Translation

स्वामिनि to the king, ते to you, भक्तिः devotion, अहो Oh, वीर्यम् valour, अहो Oh, धृतिः fortitude, अहो Oh, दिष्ट्या courage, त्वया of yours, रामपत्नी Rama's wife, यशस्विनी illustrious, देवी wife, दृष्टा saw, दिष्ट्या our luck, काकुत्स्थः Rama, सीतावियोगजम् born of separation from Sita, शोकम् grief, त्यक्ष्यति will be removed.

Meaning

"O your devotion to the king, O your valour, fortitude and courage is admirable. You could see Rama's wife, an illustrious lady. This is a matter of our good luck. Rama will (now) shed the sorrow due to separation from Sita.

SK-57-47Sundara Kanda 57.47

ततोऽङ्गदं हनूमन्तं जाम्बवन्तं च वानराः।।5.57.47।। परिवार्य प्रमुदिता भेजिरे विपुलाश्शिलाः।

tato'ṅgadṃ hanūmantṃ jāmbavantṃ ca vānarāḥ||5.57.47|| parivārya pramuditā bhejire vipulāśśilāḥ|

Translation

ततः then, वानराः vanaras, प्रमुदिताः very happily, अङ्गदम् Angada's, हनूमन्तम् Hanuman, जाम्बवन्तं च and Jambavan, परिवार्य and going round, विपुलाः extensive, शिलाः rocks, भेजिरे betook to.

Meaning

Then the vanaras went round all the three Angada, Hanuman and Jambavan. Out of joy they lay down on the huge rocks.

SK-57-48-49Sundara Kanda 57.48–49 (युग्मम्)

श्रोतुकामास्समुद्रस्य लङ्घनं वानरोत्तमाः।।5.57.48।। दर्शनं चापि लङ्कायास्सीताया रावणस्य च। तस्थुः प्राञ्जलयस्सर्वे हनुमद्वचनोन्मुखाः।।5.57.49।।

śrotukāmāssamudrasya laṅghanṃ vānarottamāḥ||5.57.48|| darśanṃ cāpi laṅkāyāssītāyā rāvaṇasya ca| tasthuḥ prāñjalayassarve hanumadvacanonmukhāḥ||5.57.49||

Translation

सर्वे all, वानरोत्तमाः best of vanaras, समुद्रस्य at the ocean, लङ्घनम् crossing, लङ्कायाः of Lanka, सीतायाः about Sita, रावणस्य च and Ravana, दर्शनं चापि and seeing, श्रोतुकामाः longing to listen, प्राञ्जलयः with folded palms, हनुमद्वचनोन्मुखाः from the mouth of Hanuman, तस्थुः kept watching.

Meaning

All the vanaras longing to listen to Hanuman about his crossing the ocean, seeing Lanka, Sita and Ravana kept looking at the face of Hanuman.

SK-57-50Sundara Kanda 57.50

तस्थौ तत्राङ्गदः श्रीमान् वानरैर्बहुभिर्वृतः। उपास्यमानो विबुधैर्दिवि देवपतिर्यथा।।5.57.50।।

tasthau tatrāṅgadḥ śrīmān vānarairbahubhirvṛtḥ| upāsyamāno vibudhairdivi devapatiryathā||5.57.50||

Translation

तत्र there, श्रीमान् great, बहुभिः many, वानरैः vanaras, वृतः surrounded, अङ्गदः Angada, दिवि heaven, विबुधैः by gods, उपास्यमानः attended by, देवपति: यथा like the lord of gods, तस्थौ shining.

Meaning

Surrounded by many great vanaras, Angada was shining like Indra, lord of the gods attended by the gods in heaven.

SK-57-51Sundara Kanda 57.51

हनूमता कीर्तिमता यशस्विना तथाङ्गदेनाङ्गदबद्धबाहुना। मुदा तदाऽध्यासितमुन्नतं महन्महीधराग्रं ज्वलितं श्रियाभवत्।।5.57.51।।

hanūmatā kīrtimatā yaśasvinā tathāṅgadenāṅgadabaddhabāhunā| mudā tadā'dhyāsitamunnatṃ mahanmahīdharāgrṃ jvalitṃ śriyābhavat||5.57.51||

Translation

कीर्तिमता famed, हनूमता Hanuman, तथा that way, यशस्विना renowned, अङ्गदबद्धबाहुना bedecked with armlets, अङ्गदेन by Angada, तदा then, मुदा joyfully, अध्यासितम् seated, उन्नतम् high, महत् great, महीधराग्रम् top of the mountain, तदा then, या propsperous, ज्वलितं splendid, अभवत् remained.

Meaning

The mountain peak graced by famous Hanuman and renowned Angada bedecked with armlets seated on top joyfully, appeared prosperous and splendid. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे सप्तपञ्चाशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fiftyseventh sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
