SK-51-1Sundara Kanda 51.1

तं समीक्ष्य महासत्त्वं सत्त्ववान्हरिसत्तमः। वाक्यमर्थवदव्यग्रस्तमुवाच दशाननम्।।5.51.1।।

tṃ samīkṣya mahāsattvṃ sattvavānharisattamḥ| vākyamarthavadavyagrastamuvāca daśānanam||5.51.1||

Translation

सत्त्ववान् courageous, हरिसत्तमः best of monkeys, महासत्त्वम् very powerful, तं दशाननम् the tenheaded, समीक्ष्य after observing, अव्यग्रम् slowly, अर्थवत् meaningful, वाक्यम् these words, तत् such, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

Hanuman, the best of monkeys, looking at the very powerful Ravana spoke slowly these highly meaningful words.

SK-51-2Sundara Kanda 51.2

अहं सुग्रीवसंदेशादिह प्राप्तस्तवालयम्। राक्षसेन्द्र हरीशस्त्वां भ्राता कुशलमब्रवीत्।।5.51.2।।

ahṃ sugrīvasṃdeśādiha prāptastavālayam| rākṣasendra harīśastvāṃ bhrātā kuśalamabravīt||5.51.2||

Translation

राक्षसेन्द्र O lord of demons, अहम् I am, सुग्रीवसंदेशात् by the orders of Sugriva, इह here, तव आलयम् your realm, प्राप्तः reached, भ्राता brotherlike, हरीशः lord of monkeys, त्वाम् to you, कुशलम् good wishes, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

"O lord of demons I reached your realm here by the orders of Sugriva, lord of monkeys who is like your brother. He conveys his good wishes to you.

SK-51-3Sundara Kanda 51.3

भ्रातुश्शृणु समादेशं सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः। धर्मार्थोपहितं वाक्यमिह चामुत्र च क्षमम्।।5.51.3।।

bhrātuśśṛṇu samādeśṃ sugrīvasya mahātmanḥ| dharmārthopahitṃ vākyamiha cāmutra ca kṣamam||5.51.3||

Translation

महात्मनः the great self, भ्रातुः brother, सुग्रीवस्य Sugriva's, समादेशम् message, इह च pertinent to this world and, अमुत्र च in the other world, क्षमम् that which is beneficial, धर्मार्थोपहितम् consistent with righteousness and propriety, वाक्यम् words, शृणु you may listen.

Meaning

"The great Sugriva who is like your brother sends you a message pertinent to this world and the other world, that which is beneficial and consistent with righteousness and propriety (धर्म and अर्थ). Listen:

SK-51-4Sundara Kanda 51.4

राजा दशरथो नाम रथकुञ्जरवाजिमान्। पितेव बन्धुर्लोकस्य सुरेश्वरसमद्युतिः।।5.51.4।।

rājā daśaratho nāma rathakuñjaravājimān| piteva bandhurlokasya sureśvarasamadyutiḥ||5.51.4||

Translation

रथकुञ्जरवाजिमान् who was richly endowed with chariots, horses and elephants, बन्धु: friend, लोकस्य of this world, पितेव like a father, सुरेश्वरसमद्युतिः equal to Indra in splendour, दशरथो नाम named Dasaratha, राजा emperor.

Meaning

"There was an emperor named Dasaratha richly endowed with chariots, horses and elephants. He was a friend to the world and was like a father and equal to Indra in splendour.

SK-51-5-6Sundara Kanda 51.5–6 (युग्मम्)

ज्येष्ठस्तस्य महाबाहुः पुत्रः प्रियकरः प्रभुः। पितुर्निदेशान्निष्क्रान्तः प्रविष्टो दण्डकावनम्।।5.51.5।। लक्ष्मणेन सह भ्रात्रा सीतया चापि भार्यया। रामो नाम महातेजा धर्म्यं पन्थानमास्थितः।।5.51.6।।

jyeṣṭhastasya mahābāhuḥ putrḥ priyakarḥ prabhuḥ| piturnideśānniṣkrāntḥ praviṣṭo daṇḍakāvanam||5.51.5|| lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā sītayā cāpi bhāryayā| rāmo nāma mahātejā dharmyṃ panthānamāsthitḥ||5.51.6||

Translation

तस्य his, ज्येष्ठः पुत्रः eldest son, महाबाहुः strongarmed, प्रियकरः very dear, प्रभुः a lord, महातेजाः highly effulgent one, रामो नाम named Rama, धर्म्यम् righteous, पन्थानम् आस्थितः has entered a path, पितुः father's, निर्देशात् by order, निष्क्रान्तः went in exile, भ्रात्रा by his brother, लक्ष्मणेन with Lakshmana, भार्यया with his wife, सीतया चापि by Sita also, दण्डकावनम् Dandaka forest, प्रविष्टः entered.

Meaning

"His eldest son, a highly effulgent one, named Rama who was dear to the king, accepting his father's orders went into exile with brother Lakshmana and wife Sita also accepting a righteous path and entered Dandaka forest.

SK-51-7Sundara Kanda 51.7

तस्य भार्या वने नष्टा सीता पतिमनुव्रता। वैदेहस्य सुता राज्ञो जनकस्य महात्मनः।।5.51.7।।

tasya bhāryā vane naṣṭā sītā patimanuvratā| vaidehasya sutā rājño janakasya mahātmanḥ||5.51.7||

Translation

वैदेहस्य of Videha, महात्मनः of the great self, जनकस्य Janka's, राज्ञः king's, सुता daughter, पतिम् husband, अनुव्रता follwing, तस्य his, भार्या wife, सीता Sita, वने in the forest, नष्टा lost.

Meaning

"Sita, daughter of king Janaka of Videha kingdom, loyally followed her husband, Rama. She was lost in the forest.

SK-51-8Sundara Kanda 51.8

स मार्गमाणस्तां देवीं राजपुत्रः सहानुजः। ऋश्यमूकमनुप्राप्त: सुग्रीवेण समागतः।।5.51.8।।

sa mārgamāṇastāṃ devīṃ rājaputrḥ sahānujḥ| ṛśyamūkamanuprāpta: sugrīveṇa samāgatḥ||5.51.8||

Translation

तां देवीम् that divine lady, मार्गमाणः searching, सहानुजः along with his brother, सः राजपुत्रः that prince, ऋश्यमूकम् to Rshyamuka, अनुप्राप्तः reached, सुग्रीवेण with Sugriva, समागतः united.

Meaning

"Searching for the divine lady the prince reached mount Rshyamuka along with his brother and there he met Sugriva.

SK-51-9Sundara Kanda 51.9

तस्य तेन प्रतिज्ञातं सीतायाः परिमार्गणम्। सुग्रीवस्यापि रामेण हरिराज्यं निवेदितम्।।5.51.9।।

tasya tena pratijñātṃ sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇam| sugrīvasyāpi rāmeṇa harirājyṃ niveditam||5.51.9||

Translation

तेन by him, तस्य his, सीतायाः Sita's, परिमार्गणम् to search, प्रतिज्ञातम् is promised, रामेणापि even by Rama also, सुग्रीवस्य Sugriva's, हरिराज्यम् kingdom of monkeys, निवेदितम् assured.

Meaning

"Sugriva promised Rama to undertake search for Sita and Rama assured Sugriva of securing him the kingdom of the monkeys.

SK-51-10Sundara Kanda 51.10

ततस्तेन मृधे हत्वा राजपुत्रेण वालिनम्। सुग्रीवः स्थापितो राज्ये हर्यृक्षाणां गणेश्वरः।।5.51.10।।

tatastena mṛdhe hatvā rājaputreṇa vālinam| sugrīvḥ sthāpito rājye haryṛkṣāṇāṃ gaṇeśvarḥ||5.51.10||

Translation

ततः then, तेन by him, राजपुत्रेण by the prince, वालिनम् Vali, मृधे in battle, हत्वा after killing, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, हर्यृऋक्षाणाम् kingdom of apes and bears, गणेश्वरः lord of the troops, राज्ये in kingdom, स्थापितः was established.

Meaning

"Then prince Rama killed Vali in battle and made Sugriva, king of the vanaras and bears and restored the kingship of Sugriva.

SK-51-11Sundara Kanda 51.11

त्वया विज्ञातपूर्वश्च वाली वानरपुङ्गवः। रामेण निहतस्सङ्ख्ये शरेणैकेन वानरः।।5.51.11।।

tvayā vijñātapūrvaśca vālī vānarapuṅgavḥ| rāmeṇa nihatassaṅkhye śareṇaikena vānarḥ||5.51.11||

Translation

वानरपुङ्गवः chief of vanaras, वाली Vali, त्वया by you, विज्ञातपूर्वश्च is known earlier, वानरः vanara, रामेण by Rama, सङ्ख्ये in a combat, एकेन by only one, शरेण with an arrow, निहतः is killed.

Meaning

"You know of Vali, chief of the vanaras, in the past. Rama killed him with a single arrow in the combat.

SK-51-12Sundara Kanda 51.12

स सीतामार्गणे व्यग्रस्सुग्रीवः सत्यसङ्गरः। हरीन् सम्प्रेषयामास दिशस्सर्वा हरीश्वरः।।5.51.12।।

sa sītāmārgaṇe vyagrassugrīvḥ satyasaṅgarḥ| harīn sampreṣayāmāsa diśassarvā harīśvarḥ||5.51.12||

Translation

सत्यसङ्गरः one who is a faithful warrior, हरीश्वरः king of monkeys, सः सुग्रीवः that Sugriva, सीतामार्गणे in searching Sita, व्यग्रः was anxious, सर्वाः all, दिशः directions, हरीन् vanaras, सम्प्रेषयामास sent.

Meaning

"Sugriva, who is true to his word and a faithful warrior, king of monkeys anxiously sent vanaras in all directions for searching Sita.

SK-51-13Sundara Kanda 51.13

तां हरीणां सहस्राणि शतानि नियुतानि च। दिक्षु सर्वासु मार्गन्ते ह्यधश्चोपरि चाम्बरे।।5.51.13।।

tāṃ harīṇāṃ sahasrāṇi śatāni niyutāni ca| dikṣu sarvāsu mārgante hyadhaścopari cāmbare||5.51.13||

Translation

हरीणाम् of monkeys, सहस्राणि in thousands, शतानि hundreds, नियुतानि च of unlimited numbers, ताम् her, सर्वासु in all, दिक्षु in directions, अधश्च underworld, उपरि in heavens, अम्बरे च in the sky, मार्गन्ते are searching.

Meaning

"Hundreds, thousands and unlimited number of monkeys are searching (for Sita) in all directions, in the underworld and heavens and the sky.

SK-51-14Sundara Kanda 51.14

वैनतेयसमाः केचित्केचित्तत्रानिलोपमाः। असङ्गगतयशशीघ्रा हरिवीरा महाबलाः।।5.51.14।।

vainateyasamāḥ kecitkecittatrānilopamāḥ| asaṅgagatayaśaśīghrā harivīrā mahābalāḥ||5.51.14||

Translation

तत्र there, महाबलाः very powerful, केचित् some, हरिवीराः heroic vanaras, वैनतेयसमाः like Vainateya (Garuda), केचित् a few, अनिलोपमाः are like the Windgod, शीघ्राः swiftfooted warriors, असङ्गगतयः went without touching the earth.

Meaning

"Some of the very powerful heroes equal to Garuda, equal to the Windgod (in swiftness) have gone (in quest of Sita) without touching the earth.

SK-51-15Sundara Kanda 51.15

अहं तु हनुमान्नाम मारुतस्यौरसस्सुतः। सीतायास्तु कृते तूर्णं शतयोजनमायतम्।।5.51.15।। समुद्रं लङ्घयित्वैव तां दिदृक्षुरिहागतः।

ahṃ tu hanumānnāma mārutasyaurasassutḥ| sītāyāstu kṛte tūrṇṃ śatayojanamāyatam||5.51.15|| samudrṃ laṅghayitvaiva tāṃ didṛkṣurihāgatḥ|

Translation

मारुतस्य Maruta's, औरसः सुतः own son, हनुमान्नाम Hanuman by name, अहं तु I too, सीतायाः कृते for Sita, तूर्णम् swiftly, शतयोजनम् a hundred yojanas, आयतम् broad, समुद्रम् ocean, लङ्घयित्वैव leaping, ताम् her, दिदृक्षुः desirous of seeing, इह here, आगतः came.

Meaning

"I, Maruta's son, Hanuman by name too came swiftly leaping across a hundred yojanas across the ocean searching for Sita.

SK-51-16-17Sundara Kanda 51.16–17 (युग्मम्)

भ्रमता च मया दृष्टा गृहे ते जनकात्मजा।।5.51.16।। तद्भवान् दृष्टधर्मार्थस्तपःकृतपरिग्रहः। परदारान् महाप्राज्ञ नोपरोद्धुं त्वमर्हसि।।5.51.17।।

bhramatā ca mayā dṛṣṭā gṛhe te janakātmajā||5.51.16|| tadbhavān dṛṣṭadharmārthastapḥkṛtaparigrahḥ| paradārān mahāprājña noparoddhuṃ tvamarhasi||5.51.17||

Translation

भ्रमता while roaming, मया by myself, ते your, गृहे in house, जनकात्मजा Janaka's daughter, दृष्टा saw, भवान् you, दृष्टधर्मार्थः knower of the truth of righteousness, तपः कृतपरिग्रहः carried out great austerities, तत् such, महाप्राज्ञ very wise person, त्वम् you, परदारान् another man's wife, उपरोद्धुम् to abduct, न अर्हसि it does not behove you.

Meaning

"While I was roaming I saw Janaka's daughter Sita at your house.You are a knower of the truth of righteousness. You are very wise and carrried out great austerities. It does not behove you to abduct another man's wife.

SK-51-18Sundara Kanda 51.18

न हि धर्मविरुद्धेषु बह्वपायेषु कर्मसु। मूलघातिषु सज्जन्ते बुद्धिमन्तो भवद्विधाः।।5.51.18।।

na hi dharmaviruddheṣu bahvapāyeṣu karmasu| mūlaghātiṣu sajjante buddhimanto bhavadvidhāḥ||5.51.18||

Translation

भवद्विधाः respectable people like you, बुद्धिमन्तः wise men, धर्मविरुद्धेषु acts which are unrighteous, बह्वपायेषु indulge in such actions, मूलघातिषु striking at the very root, कर्मसु in actions, न सज्जन्ते हि do not involve indeed.

Meaning

"Indeed, respectable people and wise men like you should not indulge in actions opposed to righteousness as it will strike at the very root of your existence.

SK-51-19Sundara Kanda 51.19

कश्च लक्ष्मणमुक्तानां रामकोपानुवर्तिनाम्। शराणामग्रतः स्थातुं शक्तो देवासुरेष्वपि।।5.51.19।।

kaśca lakṣmaṇamuktānāṃ rāmakopānuvartinām| śarāṇāmagratḥ sthātuṃ śakto devāsureṣvapi||5.51.19||

Translation

लक्ष्मणमुक्तानाम् released by Lakshmana, रामकोपानुवर्तिनाम् following Rama's wrath, शराणाम् of those arrows, अग्रतः in front, स्थातुम् to stand, देवासुरेष्वपि even among gods and asuras, कः who, शक्त: has power.

Meaning

"Who, even among gods and asuras can withstand the arrows released by Lakshmana in obedience to the infuriated Rama's orders?

SK-51-20Sundara Kanda 51.20

न चापि त्रिषु लोकेषु राजन्विद्येत कश्चन। राघवस्य व्यलीकं यः कृत्वा सुखमवाप्नुयात्।।5.51.20।।

na cāpi triṣu lokeṣu rājanvidyeta kaścana| rāghavasya vyalīkṃ yḥ kṛtvā sukhamavāpnuyāt||5.51.20||

Translation

राजन् O king, यः whoever, राघवस्य Rama's, व्यलीकम् displeasure, कृत्वा after doing, सुखम् happiness, अवाप्नुयात् can experience, त्रिषु in the three, लोकेषु in worlds, कश्चन who, न विद्येत may not be there.

Meaning

"O king there is none in these three worlds who can enjoy happiness by displeasing Rama.

SK-51-21Sundara Kanda 51.21

तत् त्रिकालहितं वाक्यं धर्म्यमर्थानुबन्धि च। मन्यस्व नरदेवाय जानकी प्रतिदीयताम्।।5.51.21।।

tat trikālahitṃ vākyṃ dharmyamarthānubandhi ca| manyasva naradevāya jānakī pratidīyatām||5.51.21||

Translation

तत् that, त्रिकालहितम् good for all three times, past present and future, धर्म्यम् is righteous, अर्थानुबन्धि च and provide you material wealth, वाक्यम् these words, मन्यस्व think, नरदेवाय to the lord of the people, जानकी Janaki, प्रतिदीयताम् return.

Meaning

"Think that my advice is beneficial to you for you present, past and future. It is righteous. It will provide you material wealth too. Hence return Sita to the lord of the people.

SK-51-22Sundara Kanda 51.22

दृष्टा हीयं मया देवी लब्धं यदिह दुर्लभम्। उत्तरं कर्म यच्छेषं निमित्तं तत्र राघवः।।5.51.22।।

dṛṣṭā hīyṃ mayā devī labdhṃ yadiha durlabham| uttarṃ karma yaccheṣṃ nimittṃ tatra rāghavḥ||5.51.22||

Translation

मया by me, इयं देवी this divine lady, दृष्टा हि indeed seen, यत् such, दुर्लभम् difficult, इह here, लब्धम् attained, उत्तरम् in future, यत् such, कर्म action, शेषम् remaining, तत्र there, राघवः Rama, निमित्तम् may plan.

Meaning

"I have actually spotted the divine lady here which was most difficult. Rama will plan the remaining course of action.

SK-51-23Sundara Kanda 51.23

लक्षितेयं मया सीता तथा शोकपरायणा। गृह्य यां नाभिजानासि पञ्चास्यामिव पन्नगीम्।।5.51.23।।

lakṣiteyṃ mayā sītā tathā śokaparāyaṇā| gṛhya yāṃ nābhijānāsi pañcāsyāmiva pannagīm||5.51.23||

Translation

तथा like that, शोकपरायणा immersed in deep sorrow, इयं सीता this Sita, मया by me, लक्षिता is seen, पञ्चास्याम् five hooded, पन्नगीमिव like a female serpent, याम् whom, गृह्य after abducting, नाभिजानासि you do not realise.

Meaning

"I have seen Sita immersed in deep sorrow. You do not realise that by abducting her you are keeping a fivehooded female serpent in your house.

SK-51-24Sundara Kanda 51.24

नेयं जरयितुं शक्या सासुरैरमरैरपि। विषसंसृष्टमत्यर्थं भुक्तमन्नमिवौजसा ।।5.51.24।।

neyṃ jarayituṃ śakyā sāsurairamarairapi| viṣasṃsṛṣṭamatyarthṃ bhuktamannamivaujasā ||5.51.24||

Translation

अत्यर्थम् excessive, विषसंसृष्टम् mixed with poison, भुक्तम् eaten, अन्नमिव like food, इयम् this, सासुरैः including asuras, अमरैरपि even gods, ओजसा absorb, जरयितुम् to weaken, न शक्या not possible.

Meaning

"Just as food mixed with venom cannot be digested by the great fire (fire of hunger), it is not possible to keep Sita even by gods and demons. (Sita is like food mixed with poison. Ravana cannot digest her with all his power.)

SK-51-25Sundara Kanda 51.25

तपस्सन्तापलब्धस्ते योऽयं धर्मपरिग्रहः। न स नाशयितुं न्याय्य आत्मप्राणपरिग्रहः।।5.51.25।।

tapassantāpalabdhaste yo'yṃ dharmaparigrahḥ| na sa nāśayituṃ nyāyya ātmaprāṇaparigrahḥ||5.51.25||

Translation

तपस्सन्तापलब्ध: obtained by the the virtue of austerity, ते to you, यः that, अयम् this, धर्मपरिग्रहः accumlation of righteousness, आत्मप्राणपरिग्रहः at the cost of your life, सः that, नाशयितुम् to destroy, न न्याय्यः not proper.

Meaning

"You have acquired the merit of righteousness by prolonged hardships experienced during your penance. It is not proper to forfeit your own life in this way.

SK-51-26Sundara Kanda 51.26

अवध्यतां तपोभिर्यां भवान् समनुपश्यति। आत्मनः सासुरैर्देवैर्हेतुस्तत्राप्ययं महान्।।5.51.26।।

avadhyatāṃ tapobhiryāṃ bhavān samanupaśyati| ātmanḥ sāsurairdevairhetustatrāpyayṃ mahān||5.51.26||

Translation

भवान् your self, तपोभिः with austerities, आत्मनः of yourself, सासुरैः including asuras, देवैः by devas, याम् whom, अवध्यताम् not to be killed, समनुपश्यसि you see, तत्रापि even then, अयम् this, महान् great, हेतुः cause.

Meaning

"You know you will not be killed by asuras or gods. In that case also this (keeping Sita with you) may be the prime cause of your death.

SK-51-27Sundara Kanda 51.27

सुग्रीवो न हि देवोऽयं नासुरो न च राक्षसः। न दानवो न गन्धर्वो न यक्षो न च पन्नगः।।5.51.27।। तस्मात्प्राणपरित्राणं कथं राजन्करिष्यसि।

sugrīvo na hi devo'yṃ nāsuro na ca rākṣasḥ| na dānavo na gandharvo na yakṣo na ca pannagḥ||5.51.27|| tasmātprāṇaparitrāṇṃ kathṃ rājankariṣyasi|

Translation

अयं सुग्रीवः this Sugriva, न हि not indeed, असुरः च an asura, राक्षसः च न not a demon, दानवः न not danava, गन्धर्वः न not a gandharva, यक्षः न not a yaksha, पन्नगश्च न not a pannga, राजन् O king, तस्मात् therefore, प्राणपरित्राणम् to protect your life, कथम् how, करिष्यसि you will do.

Meaning

"Sugriva is not an demon, nor a danava nor gandharva, nor a yaksha nor even a pannaga. Therefore how can you save your life from Sugriva?

SK-51-28Sundara Kanda 51.28

न तु धर्मोपसंहारमधर्मफलसंहितम्।।5.51.28।। तदेव फलमन्वेति धर्मश्चाधर्मनाशन:।

na tu dharmopasṃhāramadharmaphalasṃhitam||5.51.28|| tadeva phalamanveti dharmaścādharmanāśana:|

Translation

धर्मोपसंहारम् exceeding rigteousness, अधर्मफलसंहितम् yields results of unrighteousness, न तु not, तत् that, फलमेव result itself, अन्वेति follows, धर्मश्च righteousness, अधर्मनाशनः will destroy unrighteousness.

Meaning

"The fruit of dharma does not accrue to one who has reached the culmination of adharma. Unrighteousness will destroy the fruits of righteousness.

SK-51-29Sundara Kanda 51.29

प्राप्तं धर्मफलं तावद्भवता नात्र संशयः। फलमस्याप्यधर्मस्य क्षिप्रमेव प्रपत्स्यसे।।5.51.29।।

prāptṃ dharmaphalṃ tāvadbhavatā nātra sṃśayḥ| phalamasyāpyadharmasya kṣiprameva prapatsyase||5.51.29||

Translation

भवता by you, धर्मफलम् merits earned through righteousness, प्राप्तं तावत् you reaped, अत्र here, संशयः no doubt, न not, अस्य of this, अधर्मस्य of unrighteousness, फलमपि result also, क्षिप्रमेव quickly, प्रपत्स्यसे reap

Meaning

"There is no doubt you have earned merit through righteousness (dharma destroys adharma and yields sweet fruit ultimately). But now you will quickly reap the result of your unrighteousness also.

SK-51-30Sundara Kanda 51.30

जनस्थानवधं बुद्ध्वा बुद्ध्वा वालिवधं तथा।।5.51.30।। रामसुग्रीवसख्यं च बुध्यस्व हितमात्मनः।

janasthānavadhṃ buddhvā buddhvā vālivadhṃ tathā||5.51.30|| rāmasugrīvasakhyṃ ca budhyasva hitamātmanḥ|

Translation

जनस्थानवधम् killing of all ogres at Janasthana, बुद्ध्वा after realising, तथा that way, वालिवधम् killing of Vali, बुद्ध्वा after realising, रामसुग्रीवसख्यं च alliance of Rama and Sugriva also, आत्मनः your own, हितम् benefit, बुध्यस्व know (Judge and adopt suitable course of action.)

Meaning

"You know about the killing of all ogres at Janasthana and of Vali also. You know about the alliance of Rama and Sugriva. You may decide on a proper course of action for the sake of your own welfare.

SK-51-31Sundara Kanda 51.31

कामं खल्वहमप्येकस्सवाजिरथकुञ्जराम्।।5.51.31।। लङ्कां नाशयितुं शक्तस्तस्यैष तु न निश्चयः।

kāmṃ khalvahamapyekassavājirathakuñjarām||5.51.31|| laṅkāṃ nāśayituṃ śaktastasyaiṣa tu na niścayḥ|

Translation

अहम् I, एकोऽपि all alone also, सवाजिरथकुञ्जराम् full of horses, chariots and elephants, लङ्काम् Lanka, नाशयितुम् to destroy, कामम् indeed, शक्तः खलु I have the energy, एषः this, तु indeed, निश्चयः resolution, न not.

Meaning

" Alone, I can destroy this entire Lanka teeming with horses, chariots and elephants. Indeed I have the energy but not the mandate of Sri Rama.

SK-51-32Sundara Kanda 51.32

रामेण हि प्रतिज्ञातं हर्यृक्षगणसन्निधौ।।5.51.32।। उत्सादनममित्राणां सीता यैस्तु प्रधर्षिता।

rāmeṇa hi pratijñātṃ haryṛkṣagaṇasannidhau||5.51.32|| utsādanamamitrāṇāṃ sītā yaistu pradharṣitā|

Translation

रामेण by Rama, हर्यृक्षगणसन्निधौ in the presence of bears and vanaras, यैः by those, सीता Sita, प्रधर्षिता is troubled, अमित्राणाम् of enemy troops, उत्सादनम् exterminate, प्रतिज्ञातं हि indeed made a vow.

Meaning

"Rama made a vow in the presence of bears and vanaras that he would exterminate the arrogant enemy troops by whom Sita is abducted and assaulted.

SK-51-33Sundara Kanda 51.33

अपकुर्वन् हि रामस्य साक्षादपि पुरन्दरः।।5.51.33।। न सुखं प्राप्नुयादन्यः किं पुनस्त्वद्विधो जनः।

apakurvan hi rāmasya sākṣādapi purandarḥ||5.51.33|| na sukhṃ prāpnuyādanyḥ kiṃ punastvadvidho janḥ|

Translation

रामस्य to Rama, अपकुर्वन् while offending, साक्षात् personally, पुरन्दरः अपि even the destroyer of enemy citadel, Indra, सुखम् happiness, नप्राप्नुयात् will not have, त्वद्विधः people like you, किं पुनः what to say again.

Meaning

"Indra, the destroyer of enemy citadels cannot live happily if he offends Rama. What to speak of persons like you?

SK-51-34Sundara Kanda 51.34

यां सीतेत्यभिजानासि येयं तिष्ठति ते वशे।।5.51.34।। कालरात्रीति तां विद्धि सर्वलङ्काविनाशिनीम्।

yāṃ sītetyabhijānāsi yeyṃ tiṣṭhati te vaśe||5.51.34|| kālarātrīti tāṃ viddhi sarvalaṅkāvināśinīm|

Translation

याम् whom, सीता इति as Sita, अभिजानासि know, या इयम् whosoever, ते वशे under your custody, तिष्ठति stays, ताम् her, सर्वलङ्काविनाशिनीम् destroyer of the entire Lanka, कालरात्रीति the dark night of dissolution, विद्धि you may know.

Meaning

"Sita who is under your custody is no ordinary lady. She is indeed the dark night of dissolution, destroyer of entire Lanka. Know this.

SK-51-35Sundara Kanda 51.35

तदलं कालपाशेन सीताविग्रहरूपिणा।।5.51.35।। स्वयं स्कन्धावसक्तेन क्षेममात्मनि चिन्त्यताम्।

tadalṃ kālapāśena sītāvigraharūpiṇā||5.51.35|| svayṃ skandhāvasaktena kṣemamātmani cintyatām|

Translation

तत् therefore, सीताविग्रहरूपिणा in the form of Sita, स्वयम् personally, स्कन्धावसक्तेन on your shoulder, कालपाशेन by the noose of death, अलम् enough, आत्मनि for your sake, क्षेमम् welfare, चिन्त्यताम् think over.

Meaning

"Stop holding the noose of death in Sita's form whom you yourself have placed on your shoulders. Think of your own welfare.

SK-51-36Sundara Kanda 51.36

सीतायास्तेजसा दग्धां रामकोपप्रपीडिताम्।।5.51.36।। दह्यमानामिमां पश्य पुरीं साट्टप्रतोलिकाम्।

sītāyāstejasā dagdhāṃ rāmakopaprapīḍitām||5.51.36|| dahyamānāmimāṃ paśya purīṃ sāṭṭapratolikām|

Translation

Sita's, तेजसा by the glowing fire, दग्धाम् burnt, रामकोपप्रपीडिताम् pressed by Rama's wrath, दह्यमानाम् being burnt, साट्टप्रतोलिकाम् including its marketplaces and streets, इमाम् of this, पुरीम् city, पश्य see.

Meaning

"Visualize this city of Lanka including its marketplaces and main streets as burnt by Sita's power of chastity and Rama's anger.

SK-51-37Sundara Kanda 51.37

स्वानि मित्राणि मन्त्रींश्च ज्ञातीन् भ्रात्रून् सुतान् हितान्।।5.51.37।। भोगान्दारांश्च लङ्कां च मा विनाशमुपानय।

svāni mitrāṇi mantrīṃśca jñātīn bhrātrūn sutān hitān||5.51.37|| bhogāndārāṃśca laṅkāṃ ca mā vināśamupānaya|

Translation

स्वानि your, मित्राणि friends, मन्त्रींश्च ministers, ज्ञातीन् clan, भ्रात्रून् brothers and sisters, सुतान् sons, हितान् wellwishers, भोगान् pleasures, दारांश्च and wives, लङ्कां च and Lanka, विनाशम् destruction, मा उपानय do not lead.

Meaning

"Do not pave the path of your friends, ministers, clan, brothers and sisters, sons, wellwishers, wives and luxuries and Lanka to destruction.

SK-51-38Sundara Kanda 51.38

सत्यं राक्षसराजेन्द्र शृणुष्व वचनं मम।।5.51.38।। रामदासस्य दूतस्य वानरस्य विशेषतः।

satyṃ rākṣasarājendra śṛṇuṣva vacanṃ mama||5.51.38|| rāmadāsasya dūtasya vānarasya viśeṣatḥ|

Translation

राक्षसराजेन्द्र O king of demons, रामदासस्य of Rama's servant, दूतस्य of a messenger's, विशेषतः specially, वानरस्य of a vanara, मम my, सत्यम् true, वचनम् word, शृणुष्व listen.

Meaning

"O king of demon listen to the words of truth of the servant of Rama, his messenger and specially a vanara.

SK-51-39Sundara Kanda 51.39

सर्वान् लोकान् सुसंहृत्य सभूतान् सचराचरान्।।5.51.39।। पुनरेव तथा स्रष्टुं शक्तो रामो महायशाः।

sarvān lokān susṃhṛtya sabhūtān sacarācarān||5.51.39|| punareva tathā sraṣṭuṃ śakto rāmo mahāyaśāḥ|

Translation

महायशाः illustrious, रामः Rama, सभूतान् including all creatures, सचराचरान् including movables and immovable, सर्वान् all, लोकान् worlds, सुसंहृत्य after putting an end, पुनरेव once again, तथा in the same way, स्रष्टुम् to recreate, शक्तः has the power.

Meaning

"Illustrious Rama can put an end to and dissolve all creatures including both movable and immovables of all worlds. He can recreate all of them in the same way. He has such superhuman powers.

SK-51-40-42Sundara Kanda 51.40–42 (त्रिकम्)

देवासुरनरेन्द्रेषु यक्षरक्षोगणेषु च।।5.51.40।। विद्याधरेषु सर्वेषु गन्धर्वेषूरगेषु च। सिद्धेषु किन्नरेन्द्रेषु पतत्रिषु च सर्वतः।।5.51.41।। सर्वभूतेषु सर्वत्र सर्वकालेषु नास्ति सः। यो रामं प्रतियुध्येत विष्णुतुल्यपराक्रमम्।।5.51.42।।

devāsuranarendreṣu yakṣarakṣogaṇeṣu ca||5.51.40|| vidyādhareṣu sarveṣu gandharveṣūrageṣu ca| siddheṣu kinnarendreṣu patatriṣu ca sarvatḥ||5.51.41|| sarvabhūteṣu sarvatra sarvakāleṣu nāsti sḥ| yo rāmṃ pratiyudhyeta viṣṇutulyaparākramam||5.51.42||

Translation

विष्णुतुल्यपराक्रमम् equal to Visnu in valour, रामम् Rama, यः whoever, प्रतियुध्येत may combat, सः he, देवासुरनरेन्द्रेषु among the kings of gods and asuras, यक्षरक्षोगणेषु च even among yakshas and rakshasas, सर्वेषु among all, विद्याधरेषु in vidyadharas, गन्धर्वेषु gandharvas, उरगेषु च even among uragas, सिद्धेषु among siddhas, किन्नरेन्द्रेषु among kings of kinnaras, सर्वतः all over, पतत्रिषु among birds, सर्वभूतेषु in all beings, सर्वत्र at all places, सर्वकालेषु at all times, नास्ति not there.

Meaning

"He is equal to Visnu in valour. There is none who can dare face his rage, be it among gods, asuras, yakshas, rakshasas, vidyadharas, gandharvas uragas, siddhas, kings of kinnaras, birds and all beings at all places and at all times.

SK-51-43Sundara Kanda 51.43

सर्वलोकेश्वरस्यैवं कृत्वा विप्रियमुत्तमम्। रामस्य राजसिंहस्य दुर्लभं तव जीवितम्।।5.51.43।।

sarvalokeśvarasyaivṃ kṛtvā vipriyamuttamam| rāmasya rājasiṃhasya durlabhṃ tava jīvitam||5.51.43||

Translation

सर्वलोकेश्वरस्य of the lord of all worlds, राजसिंहस्य of a lion among kings, रामस्य Rama's, एवम् in this, उत्तमम् great, विप्रियम् offence, कृत्वा having done, तव your, जीवितम् life, दुर्लभम् is difficult to sustain.

Meaning

"Rama is the supreme lord of all worlds, a lion among kings. Having pained him it is very difficult for you to sustain your life after offending him to this extent.

SK-51-44Sundara Kanda 51.44

देवाश्च दैत्याश्च निशाचरेन्द्र गन्धर्वविद्याधरनागयक्षाः। रामस्य लोकत्रयनायकस्य स्थातुं न शक्तास्समरेषु सर्वे।।5.51.44।।

devāśca daityāśca niśācarendra gandharvavidyādharanāgayakṣāḥ| rāmasya lokatrayanāyakasya sthātuṃ na śaktāssamareṣu sarve||5.51.44||

Translation

निशाचरेन्द्र O king of demons, देवाश्च even devas, दैत्याश्च daityas, गन्धर्वविद्याधरनागयक्षाः gandharvas, vidyadharas, nagas and yakshas, सर्वे all, लोकत्रयनायकस्य of the lord of the three worlds, रामस्य Rama's, समरेषु in war, स्थातुम् to face his challenge, न शक्ताः do not have the power.

Meaning

"O king of demons, even devas, daityas, gandharvas, vidyadharas, nagas, and yakshas are incompetent to face Rama the lord of the three worlds in wars.

SK-51-45Sundara Kanda 51.45

ब्रह्मा स्वयम्भूश्चतुराननो वा रुद्रस्त्रिणेत्रस्त्रिपुरान्तको वा। इन्द्रो महेन्द्रस्सुरनायको वा त्रातुं न शक्ता युधि रामवध्यम्।।5.51.45।।

brahmā svayambhūścaturānano vā rudrastriṇetrastripurāntako vā| indro mahendrassuranāyako vā trātuṃ na śaktā yudhi rāmavadhyam||5.51.45||

Translation

युधि in war, रामवध्यम् deemed to be killed by Rama, स्वयंभूः selfborn Brahma, चतुराननः fourfaced one, ब्रह्मा वा even Brahma also, त्रिणेत्रः threeeyed Siva, त्रिपुरान्तकः killer of the demon Tripura, रुद्रो वा or even Rudra, इन्द्रः Indra, सुरनायकः king of suras, महेन्द्रः वा or even Mahendra, त्रातुम् to save, न शक्ताः do not have the power.

Meaning

"Even the selfborn, fourfaced Brahma, the threeeyed Siva who destroyed Tripura, Mahendra, the king of suras do not have the power to save one whom Rama decides to kill".

SK-51-46Sundara Kanda 51.46

स सौष्ठवोपेतमदीनवादिनः कपेर्निशम्याप्रतिमोऽप्रियं वचः। दशाननः कोपविवृत्तलोचनः समादिशत्तस्य वधं महाकपेः।।5.51.46।।

sa sauṣṭhavopetamadīnavādinḥ kaperniśamyāpratimo'priyṃ vacḥ| daśānanḥ kopavivṛttalocanḥ samādiśattasya vadhṃ mahākapeḥ||5.51.46||

Translation

अप्रतिमः unequal in strength, सः दशाननः that tenheaded one, अदीनवादिनः of Hanuman who expressed his opinion with all dignity, कपेः of a vanara, सौष्ठवोपेतम् in an extremely skilful manner, अप्रियम् unplesant, वचः words, निशम्य after hearing, कोपविवृत्तलोचनः eyes rolling in anger, तस्य his, महाकपेः of great Hanuman, वधम् death, समादिशत् ordered.

Meaning

The tenheaded Ravana who was of matchless strength, hearing the unpleasant words of advice and warning expressed skilfully with dignity by the great Hanuman, enraged Ravana, his eyes rolling in anger ordered the execution of Hanuman. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीये आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे एकपञ्चाशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fiftyfirst sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
