SK-50-1Sundara Kanda 50.1

तमुद्वीक्ष्य महाबाहुः पिङ्गाक्षं पुरत स्थितम्। कोपेन महताऽविष्टो रावणो लोकरावणः।।5.50.1।। शङ्काहृतात्मा दध्यौ स कपीन्द्रं तेजसावृतम्।

tamudvīkṣya mahābāhuḥ piṅgākṣṃ purata sthitam| kopena mahatā'viṣṭo rāvaṇo lokarāvaṇḥ||5.50.1|| śaṅkāhṛtātmā dadhyau sa kapīndrṃ tejasāvṛtam|

Translation

महाबाहुः mightyarmed, लोकरावणः who torments all worlds, सः रावणः that Ravana, पुरतः in front, स्थितम् stood, तं पिङ्गाक्षम् that tawnyeyed one, उद्वीक्ष्य after looking at, महता with great, कोपेन in anger, आविष्टः overpowered, शङ्काहृतात्मा doubting at heart, तेजसा with brilliance, आवृतम् surrounded, कपीन्द्रम् lord of monkeys, दध्यौ thought over.

Meaning

The mighty armed Ravana, a tormentor of all worlds, overcome with anger beheld the tawnyeyed brilliant lord of monkeys who stood before him and started thinking in his mind full of apprehensions.

SK-50-2-3Sundara Kanda 50.2–3 (युग्मम्)

किमेष भगवान्नन्दी भवेत्साक्षादिहागतः।।5.50.2।। येन शप्तोऽस्मि कैलासे मया सञ्चालिते पुरा। सोऽयं वानरमूर्तिस्स्यात्किंस्विद्बाणो महाऽसुरः।।5.50.3।।

kimeṣa bhagavānnandī bhavetsākṣādihāgatḥ||5.50.2|| yena śapto'smi kailāse mayā sañcālite purā| so'yṃ vānaramūrtissyātkiṃsvidbāṇo mahā'surḥ||5.50.3||

Translation

एषः he who, पुरा earlier, मया by me, कैलासे when Kailasa, सञ्चालिते when shaken, येन by that, शप्तः अस्मि I was, भगवान् lord, साक्षात् personally, इह here, आगतः has come, नन्दी Nandi, किं भवेत् could he be?, सः अयम् ths same, वानरमूर्तिः in vanara form, महासुरः great demon, बाणः Bana, स्यात् किं स्वित् could be himself.

Meaning

'Is he Lord Nandi who came here in person? I was earlier cursed by him when I shook the mount Kailasa in the past. Could he have assumed a monkeyform or may be he is the great demon Bana. (Nandi is the bull, the vehicle of Lord Siva).

SK-50-4Sundara Kanda 50.4

स राजा रोषताम्राक्षः प्रहस्तं मन्त्रिसत्तमम्। कालयुक्तमुवाचेदं वचोऽविपुलमर्थवत्।।5.50.4।।

sa rājā roṣatāmrākṣḥ prahastṃ mantrisattamam| kālayuktamuvācedṃ vaco'vipulamarthavat||5.50.4||

Translation

सः राजा that king, रोषताम्राक्षः eyes red in anger, मन्त्रिसत्तमम् esteemed minister, प्रहस्तम् Prahasta, कालयुक्तम् a timely word, अर्थवत् profound, अविपुलम् brief, इदं वचः this word, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

The infuriated demon king told the great minister Prahasta, these profound words in a brief manner appropriate to the hour.

SK-50-5Sundara Kanda 50.5

दुरात्मा पृच्छ्यतामेष कुतः किं वात्र कारणम्। वनभङ्गे च कोऽस्यार्थो राक्षसीनां च तर्जने।।5.50.5।।

durātmā pṛcchyatāmeṣa kutḥ kiṃ vātra kāraṇam| vanabhaṅge ca ko'syārtho rākṣasīnāṃ ca tarjane||5.50.5||

Translation

एषः he, दुरात्मा wicked one, पृच्छ्यताम् enquire, कुतः from which place, अत्र here, किं कारणम् for what reason, वनभङ्गे च in destroyed the garden, राक्षसीनाम् of shedemons, तर्जने threatened, अस्य its, अर्थः purpose, कः what?

Meaning

"Enquire from this wicked one, why he has come and from where, Why he destroyed the garden and for what purpose he threatened the demonesses?

SK-50-6Sundara Kanda 50.6

मत्पुरीमप्रधृष्यां वाऽगमने किं प्रयोजनम्। आयोधने वा किं कार्यं पृच्छयतामेष दुर्मतिः।।5.50.6।।

matpurīmapradhṛṣyāṃ vā'gamane kiṃ prayojanam| āyodhane vā kiṃ kāryṃ pṛcchayatāmeṣa durmatiḥ||5.50.6||

Translation

अप्रधृष्याम् inviolable, मत्पुरीम् my state, आगमने in arriving, किं प्रयोजनम् for what purpose, आयोधने वा or to wage war, किं कार्यम् for what purpose, एषः दुर्मतिः this wicked one, पृच्छ्यताम् enquire.

Meaning

"Enquire why this wicked one entered this inviolable city and for what purpose did he wage a war"

SK-50-7Sundara Kanda 50.7

रावणस्य वचश्श्रुत्वा प्रहस्तो वाक्यमब्रवीत्। समाश्वसिहि भद्रं ते न भीः कार्या त्वया कपे।।5.50.7।।

rāvaṇasya vacaśśrutvā prahasto vākyamabravīt| samāśvasihi bhadrṃ te na bhīḥ kāryā tvayā kape||5.50.7||

Translation

प्रहस्तः Prahasta, रावणस्य Ravana's, वचः words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् spoke, कपे O monkey, समाश्वसिहि be relaxed, ते भद्रम् feel safe, त्वया you, भीः न कार्या need not entertain fear.

Meaning

On hearing Ravana, Prahasta spoke these words boosting the monkey's morale 'O monkey Be relaxed. Feel safe. You need not entertain any fear.

SK-50-8Sundara Kanda 50.8

यदि तावत्त्वमिन्द्रेण प्रेषितो रावणालयम्। तत्त्वमाख्याहि मा भूत्ते भयं वानर मोक्ष्यसे।।5.50.8।।

yadi tāvattvamindreṇa preṣito rāvaṇālayam| tattvamākhyāhi mā bhūtte bhayṃ vānara mokṣyase||5.50.8||

Translation

वानर O vanara, त्वम् you, इन्द्रेण by Indra, रावणालयम् to the abode of Ravana, प्रेषितः यदि तावत् if you are sent, तत्त्वम् truth, आख्याहि you may tell, ते to you, भयम् माभूत् be not afraid, मोक्ष्यसे you will be released.

Meaning

"Have you came to the abode of Ravana sent by Indra? Speak the truth. Be not afraid.You will be released".

SK-50-9Sundara Kanda 50.9

यदि वैश्रवणस्य त्वं यमस्य वरुणस्य च। चाररूपमिदं कृत्वा प्रविष्टो नः पुरीमिमाम्।।5.50.9।। विष्णुना प्रेषितो वाऽपि दूतो विजयकाङ्क्षिणा।

yadi vaiśravaṇasya tvṃ yamasya varuṇasya ca| cārarūpamidṃ kṛtvā praviṣṭo nḥ purīmimām||5.50.9|| viṣṇunā preṣito vā'pi dūto vijayakāṅkṣiṇā|

Translation

इदम् this, चाररूपम् charming appearance, कृत्वा after assuming, नः our, इमां पुरीम् this city, प्रविष्टः entered, त्वम् you, वैश्रवणस्य Vaisravana's (Kubera's), यमस्य Yama's, वरुणस्य च Varuna's and, विजयकाङ्क्षिणा with a desire to win, विष्णुना by Visnu, दूतः messenger, प्रेषितो वापि sent perhaps.

SK-50-10Sundara Kanda 50.10

न हि ते वानरं तेजो रूपमात्रं तु वानरम्।।5.50.10।। तत्त्वत: कथयस्वाद्य ततो वानर मोक्ष्यसे।

na hi te vānarṃ tejo rūpamātrṃ tu vānaram||5.50.10|| tattvata: kathayasvādya tato vānara mokṣyase|

Translation

वानर vanara, ते your, रूपमात्रं तु only your appearance, वानरम् is of a vanara, तेजः glow, वानरम् of a vanara, न हि not indeed, अद्य this day, तत्त्वतः truth, कथयस्व you may speak, ततः then, मोक्ष्यसे you will be set free.

Meaning

"Your appearance is only of that of a vanara. But your glow is not of a vanara indeed. Tell the truth today. You will be set free.

SK-50-11Sundara Kanda 50.11

अनृतं वदतश्चापि दुर्लभं तव जीवितम्।।5.50.11।। अथवा यन्निमित्तस्ते प्रवेशो रावणालये।

anṛtṃ vadataścāpi durlabhṃ tava jīvitam||5.50.11|| athavā yannimittaste praveśo rāvaṇālaye|

Translation

तव your, अनृतम् false, वदतः while you speak, जीवितम् life, दुर्लभम् difficult, अथवा or else, रावणालये in the abode of Ravana, ते प्रवेशः your entry, यन्निमित्तः for waht reason.

Meaning

"If you tell a lie, it will be difficult for you to live. Or else, tell me for what reason have you entered the abode of Ravana.'

SK-50-12-13Sundara Kanda 50.12–13 (युग्मम्)

एवमुक्तो हरिश्रेष्ठस्तदा रक्षोगणेश्वरम्।।5.50.12।। अब्रवीन्नास्मि शक्रस्य यमस्य वरुणस्य वा। धनदेन न मे सख्यं विष्णुना नास्मि चोदितः।।5.50.13।। जातिरेव मम त्वेषा वानरोऽहमिहागतः।

evamukto hariśreṣṭhastadā rakṣogaṇeśvaram||5.50.12|| abravīnnāsmi śakrasya yamasya varuṇasya vā| dhanadena na me sakhyṃ viṣṇunā nāsmi coditḥ||5.50.13|| jātireva mama tveṣā vānaro'hamihāgatḥ|

Translation

एवम् that way, उक्तः having been addressed, हरिश्रेष्ठः foremost of monkeys, तदा then, रक्षोगणेश्वरम् to the lord of the demon clan, अब्रवीत् said, शक्रस्य of Indra, यमस्य Yama's, वरुणस्य Varuna's, नास्मि I am not (a messenger), मे to me, धनदेन with Kubera, सख्यम् friendship, न not, विष्णुना by Visnu, चोदितः sent (prompted), न not, एषा this way, मम my, जातिरेव birth itself, अहम् I am, वानरः vanara, इह here, आगतः come.

Meaning

The foremost of the vanaras spoke to the lord of ogres in response to the equiries made to him: "I have not come from Indra or Yama or Varuna. I have no friendship with Kubera. I have not been sent by Visnu. By birth I am vanara and I have come here.'

SK-50-14Sundara Kanda 50.14

दर्शने राक्षसेन्द्रस्य दुर्लभे तदिदं मया।।5.50.14।। वनं राक्षसराजस्य दर्शनार्थे विनाशितम्।

darśane rākṣasendrasya durlabhe tadidṃ mayā||5.50.14|| vanṃ rākṣasarājasya darśanārthe vināśitam|

Translation

राक्षसेन्द्रस्य of the lord of ogres, दर्शने to see, दुर्लभे which is difficult, मया by me, तत् that, इदम् this, वनम् garden, राक्षसराजस्य demon king's, दर्शनार्थे in order to see, विनाशितम् to destroy.

SK-50-15Sundara Kanda 50.15

ततस्ते राक्षसाः प्राप्ता बलिनो युद्धकाङ्क्षिणः। रक्षणार्थं तु देहस्य प्रतियुद्धा मया रणे।।5.50.15।।

tataste rākṣasāḥ prāptā balino yuddhakāṅkṣiṇḥ| rakṣaṇārthṃ tu dehasya pratiyuddhā mayā raṇe||5.50.15||

Translation

ततः then, बलिनः powerful, ते राक्षसाः those ogres, युद्धकाङ्क्षिणः desiring to fight, प्राप्ताः came, देहस्य of body, रक्षणार्थं तु to protect, मया by me, रणे in the combat, प्रतियुद्धाः in return I fought.

Meaning

"Desiring to fight with me the powerful ogres came. Then I fought in self defence.

SK-50-16Sundara Kanda 50.16

अस्त्रपाशैर्न शक्योऽहं बद्धुं देवासुरैरपि।।5.50.16।। पितामहादेष वरो मामाप्येषोऽभ्युपागतः।

astrapāśairna śakyo'hṃ baddhuṃ devāsurairapi||5.50.16|| pitāmahādeṣa varo māmāpyeṣo'bhyupāgatḥ|

Translation

अहम् I, देवसुरैरपि even by suras and asuras, अस्त्रपाशैः by bondage of astras, बद्धुम् to bind, न शक्यः not possible, एषः वरः such a boon, ममापि to me also, पितामहादेव only from grand father Brahma, अभ्युपागतः it has been granted me.

Meaning

"It is not possible to bind me with any bondage of astras even by devas or danavas. Such a boon has been granted to me by Grandfather Brahma.

SK-50-17-18Sundara Kanda 50.17–18 (युग्मम्)

राजानं द्रष्टुकामेन मयास्त्रमनुवर्तितम्।।5.50.17।। विमुक्तो ह्यहमस्त्रेण राक्षसैस्त्वभिपीडितः। केनचिद्राजकार्येण सम्प्राप्तोऽस्मि तवान्तिकम्।।5.50.18।।

rājānṃ draṣṭukāmena mayāstramanuvartitam||5.50.17|| vimukto hyahamastreṇa rākṣasaistvabhipīḍitḥ| kenacidrājakāryeṇa samprāpto'smi tavāntikam||5.50.18||

Translation

राजानम् king, द्रष्टुकामेन to see, मया by me, अस्त्रम् this astra, अनुवर्तितम् is honoured, राक्षसैः by ogres, अभिपीडितः तु even pressed, अहम् I, अस्त्रेण by astra, विमुक्तो हि though released, केनचित् by some mission, राजकार्येण pertaining to the king, तव to your, अन्तिकम् presence, सम्प्राप्तः अस्मि have come.

Meaning

"Wishing to see the king I honoured this astra and not otherwise. Even though I was tormented by the ogres and released by the astra I submitted to you as I have a small work assigned by the king.

SK-50-19Sundara Kanda 50.19

दूतोऽहमिति विज्ञेयो राघवस्यामितौजसः। श्रूयतां चापि वचनं मम पथ्यमिदं प्रभो।।5.50.19।।

dūto'hamiti vijñeyo rāghavasyāmitaujasḥ| śrūyatāṃ cāpi vacanṃ mama pathyamidṃ prabho||5.50.19||

Translation

अहम् I, अमितौजसः of highly powerful, राघवस्य Rama's, दूतः इति messenger thus, विज्ञेयः it may be known, प्रभो O lord, पथ्यम् good, इदम् this, मम वचनम् my word, श्रूयतां चापि listen.

Meaning

Know that I am a messenger of the highly powerful Rama. O lord please listen to these beneficial words of mine meant for your welfare. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे पञ्चाशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the fiftieth sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
