SK-32-1Sundara Kanda 32.1

ततश्शाखान्तरे लीनं दृष्ट्वा चलितमानसा। वेष्टितार्जुनवस्त्रं तं विद्युत्सङ्घातपिङ्गलम्।।5.32.1।।

tataśśākhāntare līnṃ dṛṣṭvā calitamānasā| veṣṭitārjunavastrṃ tṃ vidyutsaṅghātapiṅgalam||5.32.1||

Translation

ततः then, शाखान्तरे in between the branches, लीनम् hidden, वेष्टितार्जुनवस्त्रम् clad in white, विद्युत्सङ्घातपिङ्गलम् of tawny complexion like a cluster of lightnings, तम् him, दृष्ट्वा seeing, चलितमानसा got perplexed.

Meaning

Sita got perplexed on seeing him (Hanuman), who was tawny in complexion and looked like a cluster of lightnings, clad in white and hidden in between the branches.

SK-32-2Sundara Kanda 32.2

सा ददर्श कपिं तत्र प्रश्रितं प्रियवादिनम्। फुल्लाशोकोत्कराभासं तप्तचामीकरेक्षणम्।।5.32.2।।

sā dadarśa kapiṃ tatra praśritṃ priyavādinam| phullāśokotkarābhāsṃ taptacāmīkarekṣaṇam||5.32.2||

Translation

सा she, तत्र there, फुल्लाशोकोत्कराभासम् bright like fullyblossomed Ashoka flower, तप्तचामीकरेक्षणम् whose eyes are bright like molten gold, प्रश्रितम् was readily approaching, प्रियवादिनम् one who spoke softly and pleasingly, कपिम् monkey, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

There (on the tree) she noticed a monkey like a cluster of fully blossomed Ashoka flower, shining bright, whose eyes were glowing like pure molten gold, speaking softly and pleasingly.

SK-32-3Sundara Kanda 32.3

मैथिली चिन्तयामास विस्मयं परमं गता। अहो भीममिदं रूपं वानरस्य दुरासदम्।।5.32.3।। दुर्निरीक्षमिति ज्ञात्वा पुनरेव मुमोह सा।

maithilī cintayāmāsa vismayṃ paramṃ gatā| aho bhīmamidṃ rūpṃ vānarasya durāsadam||5.32.3|| durnirīkṣamiti jñātvā punareva mumoha sā|

Translation

मैथिली Mythili, परमम् supreme, विस्मयम् astonishment, गता felt, चिन्तयामास began thinking, अहो Oh, वानरस्य vanara's, दुरासदम् inaccessible, इदम् this, रूपम् appearance, भीमम् frightening, दुर्निरीक्षम् impossible to look at, इति thus, ज्ञात्वा thinking, सा she, पुनरेव once again, मुमोह fainted.

Meaning

Astonisted Mythili began thinking. 'Oh this vanara's appearance is frightening. He is terrible to look at. He is inaccessible'. Thinking over this again and again, she fainted.

SK-32-4-5Sundara Kanda 32.4–5 (युग्मम्)

विललाप भृशं सीता करुणं भयमोहिता।।5.32.4।। रामरामेति दुःखार्ता लक्ष्मणेति च भामिनी। रुरोद बहुधा सीता मन्दं मन्दस्वरा सती।।5.32.5।।

vilalāpa bhṛśṃ sītā karuṇṃ bhayamohitā||5.32.4|| rāmarāmeti duḥkhārtā lakṣmaṇeti ca bhāminī| ruroda bahudhā sītā mandṃ mandasvarā satī||5.32.5||

Translation

भामिनी a noble lady, सीता Sita, भयमोहिता overcome with fear, दुःखार्ता sorrowful, रामरामेति saying Rama, Rama, लक्ष्मणेति च and Lakshmana also, भृशम् repeatedly, करुणम् pitiably, विललाप cried, सीता Sita, मन्दस्वरा सती in low voice, बहुधा many ways, रुरोद cried.

Meaning

Overcome with sorrow and fear, noble Sita sobbed pitiably muttering repeatedly. 'O Rama, O Rama, O Lakshmana'.

SK-32-6Sundara Kanda 32.6

सा तं दृष्ट्वा हरिश्रेष्ठं विनीतवदुपस्थितम्। मैथिली चिन्तयामास स्वप्नोऽयमिति भामिनी।।5.32.6।।

sā tṃ dṛṣṭvā hariśreṣṭhṃ vinītavadupasthitam| maithilī cintayāmāsa svapno'yamiti bhāminī||5.32.6||

Translation

भामिनी noble lady, सा मैथिली that Maithili, विनीतवत् humbly, उपस्थितम् stood near, तम् him, हरिश्रेष्ठम् best of vanaras, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, अयम् this, स्वप्नः dream, इति thus, चिन्तयामास began thinking.

Meaning

Noble Sita, seeing the best of vanaras who stood near humbly, began reflecting 'Is this a dream'?

SK-32-7Sundara Kanda 32.7

सा वीक्षमाणा पृथुभुग्नवक्त्रं शाखामृगेन्द्रस्य यथोक्तकारम्। ददर्श पिङ्गाधिपते रमात्यं वातात्मजं बुद्धिमतां वरिष्ठम्।।5.32.7।।

sā vīkṣamāṇā pṛthubhugnavaktrṃ śākhāmṛgendrasya yathoktakāram| dadarśa piṅgādhipate ramātyṃ vātātmajṃ buddhimatāṃ variṣṭham||5.32.7||

Translation

सा she, वीक्षमाणा was looking here and there, पृथुभुग्नवक्त्रम् with a large curved face, शाखामृगेन्द्रस्य of the lord of monkeys, यथोक्तकारम् obedient servant, पिङ्गाधिपते of the king of monkeys, अमात्यम् minister, बुद्धिमताम् among the intelligent, वरिष्ठम् foremost, वातात्मजम् son of the windgod, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Looking here and there, she saw a monkey with a large, curved face, an obedient servant and a minister of the monkeylord, the foremost among the intelligentia and the son of the Windgod.

SK-32-8Sundara Kanda 32.8

सा तं समीक्ष्यैव भृशं विसंज्ञा गतासुकल्पेन बभूव सीता। चिरेण संज्ञां प्रतिलभ्य भूयो विचिन्तयामास विशालनेत्रा।।5.32.8।।

sā tṃ samīkṣyaiva bhṛśṃ visṃjñā gatāsukalpena babhūva sītā| cireṇa sṃjñāṃ pratilabhya bhūyo vicintayāmāsa viśālanetrā||5.32.8||

Translation

सा सीता that Sita, तम् him, समीक्ष्यैव after looking at, भृशम् greatly, विसंज्ञा lost senses, गतासुकल्पेव as if she was almost dead, बभूव remained, विशालनेत्रा largeeyed, चिरेण after a long time, संज्ञाम् senses, प्रतिलभ्य after getting back, भूयः again, विचिन्तयामास started thinking

Meaning

The largeeyed Sita lost her senses looking at him. She got back her senses after a long time and started thinking again:

SK-32-9Sundara Kanda 32.9

स्वप्ने मयाऽयं विकृतोऽद्य दृष्टश्शाखामृगश्शास्त्रगणैर्निषिद्धः। स्वस्त्यस्तु रामाय स लक्ष्मणाय तथा पितुर्मे जनकस्य राज्ञः।।5.32.9।।

svapne mayā'yṃ vikṛto'dya dṛṣṭaśśākhāmṛgaśśāstragaṇairniṣiddhḥ| svastyastu rāmāya sa lakṣmaṇāya tathā piturme janakasya rājñḥ||5.32.9||

Translation

अद्य today, मया by me, विकृतः an ugly form, शास्त्रगणैः by sastras, निषिद्धः prohibited, शाखामृगः monkey, स्वप्ने in a dream, दृष्टः is seen, सलक्ष्मणाय for Lakshmana, रामाय for Rama, तथा so also, मे पितुः my father, जनकस्य राज्ञः of the king Janaka, स्वस्ति auspicious, अस्तु be

Meaning

'Today I saw an ugly monkey in my dream. Its sight in a dream is inauspicious according to sastras. Let it be auspicious for Lakshmana and Rama for the sake of my father Janaka.

SK-32-10Sundara Kanda 32.10

स्वप्नोऽपि नायं नहि मेऽस्ति निद्रा शोकेन दुःखेन च पीडितायाः। सुखं हि मे नास्ति यतोऽस्मि हीना तेनेन्दुपूर्णप्रतिमाननेन।।5.32.10।।

svapno'pi nāyṃ nahi me'sti nidrā śokena duḥkhena ca pīḍitāyāḥ| sukhṃ hi me nāsti yato'smi hīnā tenendupūrṇapratimānanena||5.32.10||

Translation

अयम् this, स्वप्नोऽपि even in a dream, न not, शोकेन with grief, दुःखेन च and with sorrow, पीडितायाः a tormented woman, मे to me, निद्रा sleep, नास्ति हि not there, मे to me, सुखम् pleasure, नास्ति हि not there, यतः therefore, इन्दुपूर्णप्रतिमाननेन whose face is like a fullmoon, तेन with him, हीना devoid, अस्मि I am

Meaning

"But no, it was not a dream for tormented by grief and sorrow I cannot have a dream. When separated from the moonfaced Rama I have no sleep or pleasure, how can I have dream?

SK-32-11Sundara Kanda 32.11

रामेति रामेति सदैव बुद्ध्या विचिन्त्य वाचा ब्रुवती तमेव। तस्यानुरूपां च कथां तदर्थमेवं प्रपश्यामि तथा शृणोमि।।5.32.11।।

rāmeti rāmeti sadaiva buddhyā vicintya vācā bruvatī tameva| tasyānurūpāṃ ca kathāṃ tadarthamevṃ prapaśyāmi tathā śṛṇomi||5.32.11||

Translation

रामेति रामेति only Rama Rama, सदा ऐव always, बुद्ध्या with my brain, विचिन्त्य after thinking, तमेव him alone, ब्रुवती thinking of, तस्य his, अनुरूपाम् favourable, तदर्थम् for his sake, कथाम् talk, एवम् in this way, प्रपश्यामि I am seeing, तथा so also, शृणोमि I am hearing.

Meaning

"I am always meditating upon Rama and thinking of him alone. I am talking about things related to him. Because of that I see him and hear him.

SK-32-12Sundara Kanda 32.12

अहं हि तस्याद्य मनोभवेन सम्पीडिता तद्गतसर्वभावा। विचिन्तयन्ती सततं तमेव तथैव पश्यामि तथा शृणोमि।।5.32.12।।

ahṃ hi tasyādya manobhavena sampīḍitā tadgatasarvabhāvā| vicintayantī satatṃ tameva tathaiva paśyāmi tathā śṛṇomi||5.32.12||

Translation

अद्य now, अहम् I, तस्य his, मनोभवेन by love for him, सम्पीडिता tormented, तद्गतसर्वभावा all my thoughts immersed in him, सततम् always, तमेव about him only, विचिन्तयन्ती while I am thinking of, तथैव in a similar manner, पश्यामि I am seeing, तथैव only in such a way, शृणोमि I am listening.

Meaning

"I am tormented by intense love for Rama, with all my thoughts immersed in him. Since I am constantly thinking of him I see him and hear words about him. (She thinks it is all hallucination.)

SK-32-13Sundara Kanda 32.13

मनोरथस्स्यादिति चिन्तयामि तथापि बुद्ध्या च वितर्कयामि। किं कारणं तस्य हि नास्ति रूपं सुव्यक्तरूपश्च वदत्ययं माम्।।5.32.13।।

manorathassyāditi cintayāmi tathāpi buddhyā ca vitarkayāmi| kiṃ kāraṇṃ tasya hi nāsti rūpṃ suvyaktarūpaśca vadatyayṃ mām||5.32.13||

Translation

मनोरथः desire, स्यात् may be, इति thus, चिन्तयामि I think, बुद्ध्या च thinking, तथा like that, वितर्कयामि I am deliberating, तस्य its, रूपम् form, नास्ति हि is not seen, अयम् this, सुव्यक्तरूपः seen in a manifested form, माम् by me, वदति speaks, कारणम् cause, किम् what?

Meaning

"I feel it is only the desire in my mind. Desire has no form. But the one who is addressing me has a form. I cannot understand this.

SK-32-14Sundara Kanda 32.14

नमोऽस्तु वाचस्पतये सवज्रिणे स्वयंभुवे चैव हुताशनाय च। अनेन चोक्तं यदिदं ममाग्रतो वनौकसा तच्छ तथास्तु नान्यथा।।5.32.14।।

namo'stu vācaspataye savajriṇe svayṃbhuve caiva hutāśanāya ca| anena coktṃ yadidṃ mamāgrato vanaukasā taccha tathāstu nānyathā||5.32.14||

Translation

सवज्रिणे along with Indra, वाचस्पतये for Brihaspati, स्वयंभुवे चैव even for the creator Brahma, हुताशनाय for god of fire, च also, नमः salutations, अस्तु may be, अनेन by him, वनौकसा by the resident of the forest, मम अग्रतः in front of me, यत् whatever, इदम् this, उक्तम् spoken, तत् that, तथा true, अस्तु may be, अन्यथा other than that, न not be.

Meaning

"My salutations to Indra, Brihaspati, Brahma the creator and also to the firegod. Let all those words spoken by the vanara here in front of me be true and not other than that." इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे द्वात्रिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the thirtysecond sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
