SK-3-1-2Sundara Kanda 3.1–2 (युग्मम्)

स लम्बशिखरे लम्बे लम्बतोयदसन्निभे। सत्त्वमास्थाय मेधावी हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः।।5.3.1।। निशि लङ्कां महासत्त्वो विवेश कपिकुञ्जरः। रम्यकाननतोयाढ्यां पुरीं रावणपालिताम्।।5.3.2।।

sa lambaśikhare lambe lambatoyadasannibhe| sattvamāsthāya medhāvī hanumān mārutātmajḥ||5.3.1|| niśi laṅkāṃ mahāsattvo viveśa kapikuñjarḥ| ramyakānanatoyāḍhyāṃ purīṃ rāvaṇapālitām||5.3.2||

Translation

मेधावी intelligent, मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, महासत्त्वः mighty, कपिकुञ्जरः elephant among vanaras, सः that, हनुमान् Hanuman, लम्बशिखरे on the Lamba peak, लम्बतोयदसन्निभे resembling heavy rainbearing cloud, लम्बे on Lamba, सत्त्वम् energy, आस्थाय relying on, रम्यकाननतोयाढ्याम् rich in delightful forests, groves and pools, रावणपालिताम् ruled by Ravana, लङ्कां पुरीम् city of Lanka, निशि in the night, विवेश entered.

Meaning

The mighty son of the Windgod, intelligent Hanuman, an elephant among vanaras, standing on the peak of the Lamba which looked like a high rainbearing cloud and relying on his energy, entered by night the city of Lanka, ruled by Ravana rich in delightful forests, groves and water pools.

SK-3-3-7Sundara Kanda 3.3–7 (कुलकम्)

शारदाम्बुधरप्रख्यैर्भवनैरुपशोभिताम्। सागरोपमनिर्घोषां सागरानिलसेविताम्।।5.3.3।। सुपुष्टबलसम्पुष्टां यथैव विटपावतीम्। चारुतोरणनिर्यूहां पाण्डुरद्वारतोरणाम्।।5.3.4।। भुजगाचरितां गुप्तां शुभां भोगवतीमिव। तां स विद्युद्घनाकीर्णां ज्योतिर्मार्गनिषेविताम्।।5.3.5।। मन्दमारुतसञ्चारां यथेन्द्रस्यामरावतीम्। शातकुम्भेन महता प्राकारेणाभिसंवृताम्।।5.3.6।। किङ्किणीजालघोषाभिः पताकाभिरलङ्कृताम्। आसाद्य सहसा हृष्टः प्राकारमभिपेदिवान्।।5.3.7।।

Translation

शारदाम्भुधरप्रख्यैः like autumnal clouds, भवनैः mansions, उपशोभिताम् beautiful, सागरोपमनिर्घोषाम् sounds of the roar of the sea, सागरानिलसेविताम् served by the sea breeze, सुपुष्टबलसम्पुष्टाम् strong with wellnourished army, विटपावतीं यथैव just as Vitapavati, चारुतोरणनिर्यूहाम् stationed at the beautiful archways, पाण्डुरद्वारतोरणाम् provided with white gates and archs, भुजगाचरिताम् inhabited by snakes, गुप्ताम् protected, शुभाम् auspicious, भोगवतीमिव just as Bhogavati (Patala), the abode of serpents, सविद्युद्घनाकीर्णाम् overcast with clouds pierced by glittering streaks of lightning, जोतिर्मार्गनिषेविताम् served by planets and stars, मन्दमारुतसञ्चाराम् winds blowing mild (out of fear of Ravana), इन्द्रस्य Indra's, अमरावतीं यथा like the city of Amaravati, शातकुम्भेन with golden, महता great, प्राकारेण with rampart, अभिसंव़ृताम् adorned everywhere, किङ्किणीजालघोषाभिः with jingling sounds of small bells, पताकाभिः with flags, अलङ्कृताम् decorated, ताम् that, सहसा at once, आसाद्य having reached, हृष्टः was thrilled, प्राकारम् the rampart, अभिपेदिवान् surveyed.

Meaning

Hanuman, happy to reach Lanka, stood on its rampart and surveyed the city of land which was splendid with beautiful mansions overcast with autumnal clouds pierced by glittering streaks of lightning, served by planets and stars with mild winds blowing (out of fear of Ravana), with the roaring sounds of the sea and with a wellfed army like Vitapavati (that is Alaka, the capital of Kubera, halfbrother of Ravana and the treasurer of celestials), which had elephants sationed at the outer gates, provided with white archways and protected by serpents like the auspicious city of Bhogavati (capital of Patala). Surrounded by a golden rampart, the city resembled Amaravati, the capital of Indra, decorated with flags fluttering, echoing with the jingling sounds of small bells.

SK-3-8-12Sundara Kanda 3.8–12 (कुलकम्)

विस्मयाविष्टहृदयः पुरीमालोक्य सर्वतः। जाम्बूनदमयैर्द्वारैर्वैडूर्यकृतवेदिकैः।।5.3.8।। वज्रस्फटिकमुक्ताभिर्मणिकुट्टिमभूषितैः। तप्तहाटकनिर्यूहै राजतामलपाण्डुरैः।।5.3.9।। वैढूर्यकृतसोपानैः स्फाटिकान्तरपांसुभिः। चारुसंजवनोपेतैः खमिवोत्पतितैः शुभैः।।5.3.10।। क्रौञ्चबर्हिणसङ्घुष्टैः राजहंस निषेवितैः। तूर्याभरणनिर्घोषैः सर्वतः प्रतिनादिताम्।।5.3.11।। वस्वौकसाराप्रतिमां तां वीक्ष्य नगरीं ततः। खमिवोत्पतितुं कामां जहर्ष हनुमान् कपिः।।5.3.12।।

Translation

पुरीम् the city, सर्वतः all over, आलोक्य surveying, विस्मयाविष्टहृदयः wonderstruck at heart, ततः then, कपिः vanara, हनुमान् Hanuman, जम्बूनदमयैः full of gold, द्वारैः shutters, वैढूर्यकृतवेदिकैः platforms encrusted with vaidurya, वज्रस्फटिकमुक्ताभिः with diamonds, crystals and pearls, मणिकुट्टिमभूषितैः studded with gems, तप्तहाटकनिर्यूहैः made of molten gold, राजतामलपाण्डुरैः pure white silver floors, वैढूर्यकृतसोपानैः stairscases encrusted with vaidurya, स्फाटिकान्तरपांसुभिः covered with crystal grains, चारुसंजवनोपेतैः with lovely quadrangles, क्रौञ्चबर्हिणसङ्घुष्टैः echoing with sounds of Krauncha birds and Peacocks, राजहंसनिषेवितैः inhabited by royal swans, खम् sky, उत्पतितैरिव rising into the sky, शुभैः auspicious, तूर्याभरणनिर्घोषैः filled with sounds of musical instruments, सर्वतः all over, प्रतिनादिताम् resounding, वस्वौकसारप्रतिमाम् like the replica of the city of Vaswokasara, खम् sky, उत्पतिताम् इव as if risen, ताम् that, लङ्कां नगरीम् city of Lanka, वीक्ष्य gazing, जहर्ष rejoiced.

Meaning

Surveying all over, Hanuman was wonderstruck to see as though it was leaping into the sky. The city had golden shutters, altars encrusted with vaidurya, mansions inlaid with diamonds, crystals, pearls and other gems, crowned with pure gold and silver. The staircases built with silver were studded with vaidurya. The beautiful quadrangles, coverd with grains of crystal were as though leaping into the air. It echoed with sounds of krauncha birds, peacocks and royal swans. Filled with sounds of musical instruments, it resembled the city of Vaswokasara.

SK-3-13Sundara Kanda 3.13

तां समीक्ष्य पुरीं रम्यां राक्षसाधिपतेः शुभाम्। अनुत्तमामृद्धियुतां चिन्तयामास वीर्यवान्।।5.3.13।।

tāṃ samīkṣya purīṃ ramyāṃ rākṣasādhipateḥ śubhām| anuttamāmṛddhiyutāṃ cintayāmāsa vīryavān||5.3.13||

Translation

वीर्यवान् valiant, अनुत्तमाम् excellent, ऋद्धियुताम् prosperous, रम्याम् enchanting, शुभाम् auspicious, राक्षसाधिपतेः of the king of demons, तां पुरीम् that city, समीक्ष्य gazing, चिन्तयामास reflected:

Gazing at the enchanting, auspicious, prosperous city of the king of demons mighty Hanuman began to reflect:

SK-3-14Sundara Kanda 3.14

नेयमन्येन नगरी शक्या धर्षयितुं बलात्। रक्षिता रावणबलैरुद्यतायुधधारिभिः।।5.3.14।।

neyamanyena nagarī śakyā dharṣayituṃ balāt| rakṣitā rāvaṇabalairudyatāyudhadhāribhiḥ||5.3.14||

Translation

उद्यतायुधधारिभिः ready to fight, रावणबलैः by Ravana's forces, रक्षिता protected, इयं नगरी this city, अन्येन by others, बलात् with force, धर्षयितुम् to attack, न शक्या not posible.

Meaning

'It is not possible to attack this city by to outsiders as it is protected by the forces of Ravana with their weapons ready(to attack).

SK-3-15Sundara Kanda 3.15

कुमुदाङ्गदयोर्वापि सुषेणस्य महाकपेः। प्रसिद्धेयं भवेद्भूमिर्मैन्दद्विविदयोरपि।।5.3.15।।

kumudāṅgadayorvāpi suṣeṇasya mahākapeḥ| prasiddheyṃ bhavedbhūmirmaindadvividayorapi||5.3.15||

Translation

इयम् this, भूमिः land, कुमुदाङ्गदयोर्वापि by Kumuda and Angada, महाकपेः of the great vanara, सुषेणस्य for Sushena, मैन्दद्विविदयोरपि for Mainda and Dvivida also, प्रसिद्धा may be accessible, भवेत् be.

Meaning

'This land can be reached by Kumuda and Angada or the great vanara Sushena and even by Mainda and Dvivida.

SK-3-16Sundara Kanda 3.16

विवस्वतस्तनूजस्य हरेश्च कुशपर्वणः। ऋक्षस्य केतुमालस्य मम चैव गतिर्भवेत्।।5.3.16।।

vivasvatastanūjasya hareśca kuśaparvaṇḥ| ṛkṣasya ketumālasya mama caiva gatirbhavet||5.3.16||

Translation

विवस्वतः Sun's, तनूजस्य of the son, हरेः monkey's, कुशपर्वणः of Kushaparva, कपिमुख्यस्य of the chief of vanaras, केतुमालस्य Ketumala, ऋक्षस्य Riksha (Jambavan) also, मम चैव for me also, गतिः within reach, भवेत् will be.

Meaning

'Son of Vivaswan (Sugriva), the chief of vanaras, Kushaparva, Riksha (Jambavan), Ketumala and myself also will be able to reach this place.

SK-3-17Sundara Kanda 3.17

समीक्ष्य तु महाबाहू राघवस्य पराक्रमम्। लक्ष्मणस्य च विक्रान्तमभवत् प्रीतिमान् कपिः।।5.3.17।।

samīkṣya tu mahābāhū rāghavasya parākramam| lakṣmaṇasya ca vikrāntamabhavat prītimān kapiḥ||5.3.17||

Translation

कपिः vanara, महाबाहु: longarmed, राघवस्य Raghava's, पराक्रमम् valour, लक्ष्मणस्य Lakshmana's, विक्रान्तं च valiant advances, समीक्ष्य after considering, प्रीतिमान् pleased, अभवत् felt.

Meaning

Reflecting upon the valour of longarmed Rama and valiant advances of Lakshmana Hamuman felt pleased (within himself).

SK-3-18-19Sundara Kanda 3.18–19 (युग्मम्)

तां रत्नवसनोपेतां कोष्ठागारावतंसकाम्। यन्त्रागारस्तनीमृद्धां प्रमदामिव भूषिताम्।।5.3.18।। तां नष्टतिमिरां दीप्तैर्भास्वरैश्च महागृहैः। नगरीं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य स ददर्श महाकपिः।।5.3.19।।

tāṃ ratnavasanopetāṃ koṣṭhāgārāvatṃsakām| yantrāgārastanīmṛddhāṃ pramadāmiva bhūṣitām||5.3.18|| tāṃ naṣṭatimirāṃ dīptairbhāsvaraiśca mahāgṛhaiḥ| nagarīṃ rākṣasendrasya sa dadarśa mahākapiḥ||5.3.19||

Translation

सः महाकपिः the great vanara, रत्नवसनोपेताम् clad in robes studded with gems, कोष्ठागारावतंसकाम् stable houses as her earrings, यन्त्रागाराम् armouries, ऋद्धाम् breasts, भूषिताम् ornamented, प्रमदामिव like a young maiden, दीप्तै: by glittering ones, भास्वरैश्च by glowing, महागृहैः by great mansions, नष्टतिमिराम् dispelled darkness, ताम् hero, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य demon king's, नगरीम् city, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Hanuman looked at the city of the demon king, whose darkness was dispelled by bright gems and mighty mansions as if it were a young maiden. The prosperous city was like a well decorated woman, adorned with ornaments having walls for her dress, the stables for her earrings, the armouries for her breasts.

SK-3-20Sundara Kanda 3.20

थ सा हरिशार्दूलं प्रविशन्तं महाबलम्। नगरी स्वेन रूपेण ददर्श पवनात्मजम्।।5.3.20।।

tha sā hariśārdūlṃ praviśantṃ mahābalam| nagarī svena rūpeṇa dadarśa pavanātmajam||5.3.20||

Translation

अथ then, सा नगरी that city, हरिशार्दूलम् tiger among vanaras, महाबलम् of great prowess, पवनात्मजम् son of the Windgod, प्रविशन्तम् while he entered, स्वेन in her real, रूपेण form, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Assuming her real form the presiding deity of Lanka noticed the son of the Windgod, the tiger among vanaras of great prowess entering the city.

SK-3-21Sundara Kanda 3.21

सा तं हरिवरं दृष्ट्वा लङ्का रावणपालिता। स्वयमेवोत्थिता तत्र विकृताननदर्शना।।5.3.21।।

sā tṃ harivarṃ dṛṣṭvā laṅkā rāvaṇapālitā| svayamevotthitā tatra vikṛtānanadarśanā||5.3.21||

Translation

रावणपालिता ruled by Ravana, सा लङ्का that Lanka, तं हरिवरम् that best of vanaras, तत्र there, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, विकृताननदर्शना appeared with a distorted face, स्वयमेव herself, उत्थिता rose.

Meaning

Seeing the best of vanaras, the deity of the city of Lanka, ruled by Ravana rose up before him in a distorted form.

SK-3-22Sundara Kanda 3.22

पुरस्तात्कपिवर्यस्य वायुसूनोरतिष्ठत। मुञ्चमाना महानादमब्रवीत्पवनात्मजम्।।5.3.22।।

purastātkapivaryasya vāyusūnoratiṣṭhata| muñcamānā mahānādamabravītpavanātmajam||5.3.22||

Translation

कपिवर्यस्य at the great vanara, वायुसूनोः of the son of the Windgod, पुरस्तात् in front of, अतिष्ठत stood, महानादम् loud sound, मुञ्चमाना while producing, पवनात्मजम् to the son of the Windgod, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

She stood in front of the son of the Windgod and spoke to him in a loud voice.

SK-3-23Sundara Kanda 3.23

कस्त्वं केन च कार्येण इह प्राप्तो वनालय। कथयस्वेह यत्तत्त्वं यावत्प्राणा धरन्ति ते।।5.3.23।।

kastvṃ kena ca kāryeṇa iha prāpto vanālaya| kathayasveha yattattvṃ yāvatprāṇā dharanti te||5.3.23||

Translation

वनालय one who dwells in the forest, त्वम् you, कः who are you, केन कार्येण for what purpose, इह here, प्राप्तः arrived, ते your, प्राणाः life, यावत् until, धरन्ति hold on, इह here, तत्त्वम् truth, यत् that, कथयस्व reveal.

Meaning

"O dweller of the forest, who are you? Why did you come here? Speak the truth about your identity, so long as you hold on to your life.

SK-3-24Sundara Kanda 3.24

न शक्यं खल्वियं लङ्का प्रवेष्टुं वानर त्वया। रक्षिता रावणबलैरभिगुप्ता समन्ततः।।5.3.24।।

na śakyṃ khalviyṃ laṅkā praveṣṭuṃ vānara tvayā| rakṣitā rāvaṇabalairabhiguptā samantatḥ||5.3.24||

Translation

वानर vanara, रावणबलैः by Ravana's army, रक्षिता protected, समन्ततः everywhere, अभिगुप्ता kept secret, इयं लङ्का this Lanka, त्वया by you, प्रवेष्टुम् to enter, न शक्यं खलु surely not possible.

Meaning

"O vanara this Lanka is a secret place protected by Ravana's army everywhere. It is surely not possible for you to enter this city".

SK-3-25Sundara Kanda 3.25

अथ तामब्रवीद्वीरो हनुमानग्रतः स्थिताम्। कथयिष्यामि ते तत्त्वं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि।।5.3.25।।

atha tāmabravīdvīro hanumānagratḥ sthitām| kathayiṣyāmi te tattvṃ yanmāṃ tvṃ paripṛcchasi||5.3.25||

Translation

अथ now, वीरः hero, हनुमान् Hanuman, अग्रतः in front, स्थिताम् standing, ताम् her, अब्रवीत् spoke, यत् since, त्वम् you, माम् me, परिपृच्छसि you are enquiring, तत्त्वम् truly, ते to you, कथयिष्यामि I will tell.

Meaning

Then Hanuman who was standing in front of her said, "I will tell you the truth since you are asking me".

SK-3-26Sundara Kanda 3.26

का त्वं विरूपनयना पुरद्वारेऽवतिष्ठसि। किमर्थं चापि मां रुद्ध्वा निर्भर्त्सयसि दारुणा।।5.3.26।।

kā tvṃ virūpanayanā puradvāre'vatiṣṭhasi| kimarthṃ cāpi māṃ ruddhvā nirbhartsayasi dāruṇā||5.3.26||

Translation

पुरद्वारे at the gate of the city, अवतिष्ठसि stands, विरूपनयना woman of ugly distorted eyes, त्वम् you, का who are, दारुणा dreadful, माम् me, रुद्ध्वा after obstructing, किमर्थम् why, निर्भर्त्सयसि threatening.

Meaning

"Who are you, terrible woman of ugly, distorted eyes? Why are you obstructing me at the gate of the city? Why do you impound upon me?

SK-3-27Sundara Kanda 3.27

हनुमद्वचनं श्रुत्वा लङ्का सा कामरूपिणी। उवाच वचनं क्रुद्धा परुषं पवनात्मजम्।।5.3.27।।

hanumadvacanṃ śrutvā laṅkā sā kāmarūpiṇī| uvāca vacanṃ kruddhā paruṣṃ pavanātmajam||5.3.27||

Translation

कामरूपिणी one who can assume any form at free will, सा लङ्का that Lanka, हनुमद्वचनम् Hanuman's words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, क्रुद्धा enraged, पवनात्मजम् son of Windgod, परुषम् harsh, वचनम् words, उवाच spoke.

Meaning

The spirit of Lanka who could assume any form at her will got enraged on hearing the words of Hanuman and spake in a harsh tone.

SK-3-28Sundara Kanda 3.28

अहं राक्षसराजस्य रावणस्य महात्मनः। आज्ञाप्रतीक्षा दुर्धर्षा रक्षामि नगरीमिमाम्।।5.3.28।।

ahṃ rākṣasarājasya rāvaṇasya mahātmanḥ| ājñāpratīkṣā durdharṣā rakṣāmi nagarīmimām||5.3.28||

Translation

राक्षसराजस्य demon king's, महात्मनः of the great self, रावणस्य Ravana's, आज्ञाप्रतीक्षा waiting for his orders, दुर्धर्षा unassailable, अहम् I, इमां नगरीम् this city, रक्षामि Iam protecting.

Meaning

"In obedience to the orders of the great demon king, Ravana, I am protecting this unassailable city.

SK-3-29Sundara Kanda 3.29

न शक्या मामवज्ञाय प्रवेष्टुं नगरी त्वया। अद्य प्राणैः परित्यक्तः स्वप्स्यसे निहतो मया।।5.3.29।।

na śakyā māmavajñāya praveṣṭuṃ nagarī tvayā| adya prāṇaiḥ parityaktḥ svapsyase nihato mayā||5.3.29||

Translation

माम् myself, अवज्ञाय after ignoring, नगरी into this city, त्वया by you, प्रवेष्टुम् to enter, न शक्या not possible, अद्य now, मया by me, निहतः slayed, प्राणैः life, परित्यक्तः giving up life, स्वप्स्यसे you will attain eternal sleep.

Meaning

"It is not possible for you to enter this city ignoring my presence. Soon you will be killed. You will give up your life and attain eternal sleep.

SK-3-30Sundara Kanda 3.30

अहं हि नगरी लङ्का स्वयमेव प्लवङ्गम। सर्वतः परिरक्षामि ह्येतत्ते कथितं मया।।5.3.30।।

ahṃ hi nagarī laṅkā svayameva plavaṅgama| sarvatḥ parirakṣāmi hyetatte kathitṃ mayā||5.3.30||

Translation

प्लवङ्गम monkey, अहम् I, स्वयम् myself, लङ्कानगरी city of Lanka, सर्वतः all over, परिरक्षामि I will be protecting, एतत् as such, ते to you, मया by me, कथितं हि is told.

Meaning

"O monkey I am the presiding ogress of Lanka presenting myself personally. I am to protect this city. This is my answer to you".

SK-3-31Sundara Kanda 3.31

लङ्काया वचनं श्रुत्वा हनुमान् मारुतात्मजः। यत्नवान्स हरिश्रेष्ठः स्थितश्शैल इवापरः।।5.3.31।।

laṅkāyā vacanṃ śrutvā hanumān mārutātmajḥ| yatnavānsa hariśreṣṭhḥ sthitaśśaila ivāparḥ||5.3.31||

Translation

मारुतात्मजः son of the Windgod, हरिश्रेष्ठः best of the monkeys, सः he, हनुमान् Hanuman, लङ्कायाः Lanka's, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, यत्नवान् he got ready, अपरः another, शैलः mountain, स्थितः stood, इव like.

Meaning

On hearing the words of ogress of Lanka, the son of the Windgod stood up ready and appeared like another mountain.

SK-3-32Sundara Kanda 3.32

स तां स्त्रीरूपविकृतां दृष्टवा वानरपुङ्गवः। आबभाषेऽथ मेधावी सत्त्ववान् प्लवगर्षभः।।5.3.32।।

sa tāṃ strīrūpavikṛtāṃ dṛṣṭavā vānarapuṅgavḥ| ābabhāṣe'tha medhāvī sattvavān plavagarṣabhḥ||5.3.32||

Translation

अथ and then, मेधावी wise one, सत्त्ववान् powerful, प्लवगर्षभः a bull among vanaras, वानरपुङ्गवः chief of vanaras, सः that, स्त्रीरूपविकृताम् monster of a woman, ताम् her, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, आबभाषे spoke.

Meaning

Seeing the monster of a woman, the powerful Hanuman, bull among vanaras endowed with wisdom spoke to her.

SK-3-33Sundara Kanda 3.33

द्रक्ष्यामि नगरीं लङ्कां साट्टप्राकारतोरणाम्। निर्विशङ्कमिमंलोकं पश्यन्त्यास्तवसांप्रतम्। इत्यर्थमिह संप्राप्तः परं कौतूहलं हि मे।।5.3.33।।

drakṣyāmi nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ sāṭṭaprākāratoraṇām| nirviśaṅkamimṃlokṃ paśyantyāstavasāṃpratam| ityarthamiha sṃprāptḥ parṃ kautūhalṃ hi me||5.3.33||

Translation

साट्टप्राकारतोरणाम् marketplaces, ramparts and gateways, निर्विशङ्कम् freely, इमं लोकं this world, लङ्कां नगरीम् Lanka city, द्रक्ष्यामि I see, इत्यर्थम् for this reason, इह here, संप्राप्तः I came here, मे to myself, परम् great, कौतूहलं हि curiosity

Meaning

"I would like to see this Lanka with marketplaces, gateways and ramparts. I have come here for that purpose. My curiosity has been roused to see this place.

SK-3-34Sundara Kanda 3.34

वनान्युपवनानीह लङ्कायाः काननानि च। सर्वतो गृहमुख्यानि द्रष्टुमागमनं हि मे।।5.3.34।।

vanānyupavanānīha laṅkāyāḥ kānanāni ca| sarvato gṛhamukhyāni draṣṭumāgamanṃ hi me||5.3.34||

Translation

लङ्कायाः Lanka's, वनानि gardens, उपवनानि groves, काननानि च and even forests, सर्वतः all over, गृहमुख्यानि important houses, द्रष्टुम् to see, इह here, मे myself, आगमनं हि have arrived.

Meaning

"I have arrived here to see Lanka's gardens, groves and forests and also all the important houses".

SK-3-35Sundara Kanda 3.35

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा लङ्का सा कामरूपिणी। भूय एव पुनर्वाक्यं बभाषे परुषाक्षरम्।।5.3.35।।

tasya tadvacanṃ śrutvā laṅkā sā kāmarūpiṇī| bhūya eva punarvākyṃ babhāṣe paruṣākṣaram||5.3.35||

Translation

कामरूपिणी one who can assume any form at free will, लङ्का Lanka, तस्य his, तत् that, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा after hearing, पुनः again, भूयः एव more, वाक्यम् words, परुषाक्षरम् in harsh words, बभाषे spoke.

Meaning

On hearing Hanuman, the ogress of Lanka, who could assume any form, replied in harsh words:

SK-3-36Sundara Kanda 3.36

मामनिर्जित्य दुर्बुद्धे राक्षसेश्वरपालितां। न शक्यमद्य ते द्रष्टुं पुरीयं वानराधम।।5.3.36।।

māmanirjitya durbuddhe rākṣaseśvarapālitāṃ| na śakyamadya te draṣṭuṃ purīyṃ vānarādhama||5.3.36||

Translation

दुर्बुद्धे O evilminded one, वानराधम foolish monkey, माम् me, अनिर्जित्य without conquering me, राक्षसेश्वरपालितां ruled by the demon king, इयं पुरी this city, अद्य now, द्रष्टुम् to see, ते by you, न शक्यम् not possible.

Meaning

"O evilminded, foolish monkey It is not possible for you to enter the city ruled by Ravana, the king of demons without conquering me".

SK-3-37Sundara Kanda 3.37

ततः स कपिशार्दूलस्तामुवाच निशाचरीम्। दृष्ट्वा पुरीमिमां भद्रे पुनर्यास्ये यथागतम्।।5.3.37।।

tatḥ sa kapiśārdūlastāmuvāca niśācarīm| dṛṣṭvā purīmimāṃ bhadre punaryāsye yathāgatam||5.3.37||

Translation

ततः then, सः that, कपिशार्दूल: tiger among monkeys, ताम् her, निशाचरीम् nightwalker, उवाच said, भद्रे O noble one, इमाम् this, पुरीम् city, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, पुनः again, यथागतम् as I came, यास्ये I will go .

Meaning

The tiger among monkeys said to the, the nightwalker "O noble Lanka I shall see this city and go back".

SK-3-38Sundara Kanda 3.38

ततः कृत्वा महानादं सा वै लङ्का भयावहम्। तलेन वानरश्रेष्ठं ताडयामास वेगिता।।5.3.38।।

tatḥ kṛtvā mahānādṃ sā vai laṅkā bhayāvaham| talena vānaraśreṣṭhṃ tāḍayāmāsa vegitā||5.3.38||

Translation

ततः then, सा लङ्का that Lanka, भयावहम् frightening, महानादम् loud noise, कृत्वा after making, वेगिता with speed, वानरश्रेष्ठम् best vanara, तलेन with her palm, ताडयामास struck.

Meaning

Then the ogress of Lanka made a loud and frightening sound and struck the most powerful vanara with the palm of her hand.

SK-3-39Sundara Kanda 3.39

ततः स कपिशार्दूलो लङ्कया ताडितो भृशम्। ननाद सुमहानादं वीर्यवान् पवनात्मजः।।5.3.39।।

tatḥ sa kapiśārdūlo laṅkayā tāḍito bhṛśam| nanāda sumahānādṃ vīryavān pavanātmajḥ||5.3.39||

Translation

ततः then, लङ्कया by Lanka, भृशम् very much (badly), ताडितः hit, वीर्यवान् heroic one, पवनात्मजः son of the Windgod, सः कपिशार्दूलः that tiger among vanaras, सुमहानादम् loud noise, ननाद made.

Meaning

At this strong slap, the heroic Hanuman, son of the Windgod roared loudly.

SK-3-40Sundara Kanda 3.40

ततः संवर्तयामास वामहस्तस्य सोऽङ्गुलीः। मुष्टिनाऽऽभिजघानैनां हनुमान् क्रोधमूर्छितः।।5.3.40।। स्त्री चेति मन्यमानेन नातिक्रोधः स्वयं कृतः।

tatḥ sṃvartayāmāsa vāmahastasya so'ṅgulīḥ| muṣṭinā''bhijaghānaināṃ hanumān krodhamūrchitḥ||5.3.40|| strī ceti manyamānena nātikrodhḥ svayṃ kṛtḥ|

Translation

ततः then, सः that, हनुमान् Hanuman, क्रोधमूर्छितः overcome by anger, वामहस्तस्य left hand, अङ्गुलीः fingers, संवर्तयामास clenched, एनाम् her, मुष्टिना with his fist, अभिजघान hit her, स्त्री च इति that she is a woman, मन्यमानेन considering, स्वयम् himself, अतिक्रोधः outrageous, न कृतः did not develop.

Meaning

Overcome by anger, Hanuman clenched the fingers of his left hand and hit her with his fist. Considering her to be, after all, a woman he did not turn outrageous.

SK-3-41Sundara Kanda 3.41

सा तु तेन प्रहारेण विह्वलाङ्गी निशाचरी।।5.3.41।। पपात सहसा भूमौ विकृताननदर्शना।

sā tu tena prahāreṇa vihvalāṅgī niśācarī||5.3.41|| papāta sahasā bhūmau vikṛtānanadarśanā|

Translation

सा that, निशाचरी तु night roamer, तेन प्रहारेण that stroke, विह्वलाङ्गी her limbs shattered, सहसा at once, भूमौ on the, पपात fell, विकृताननदर्शना with her face distorted.

Meaning

Struck by the blow of Hanuman the demoness fell down on the ground at once, her limbs shattered, her face distorted.

SK-3-42Sundara Kanda 3.42

ततस्तु हनुमान् प्राज्ञस्तां दृष्ट्वा विनिपातिताम्।।5.3.42।। कृपां चकार तेजस्वी मन्यमानः स्त्रियं तु ताम्।

tatastu hanumān prājñastāṃ dṛṣṭvā vinipātitām||5.3.42|| kṛpāṃ cakāra tejasvī manyamānḥ striyṃ tu tām|

Translation

ततः then, प्राज्ञः wise, तेजस्वी brilliaint, हनुमान् Hanuman, विनिपातिताम् fallen woman, ताम् her, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, ताम् her, स्त्रियम् is a woman, मन्यमानः thinking in the mind, कृपाम् compassion, चकार showed.

Meaning

Wise and brilliant Hanuman, seeing the deity fallen down, left her (without killing her) out of compassion, thinking that she is a woman, after all.

SK-3-43Sundara Kanda 3.43

ततो वै भृशसंविग्ना लङ्का सा गद्गदाक्षरम्।।5.3.43।। उवाचागर्वितं वाक्यं हनूमन्तं प्लवङ्गमम्।

tato vai bhṛśasṃvignā laṅkā sā gadgadākṣaram||5.3.43|| uvācāgarvitṃ vākyṃ hanūmantṃ plavaṅgamam|

Translation

ततः then, सा that, लङ्का Lanka, भृशसंविग्ना greatly agitated, गद्गदाक्षरम् with choked voice, अगर्बितम् deflated of pride, वाक्यम् these words, प्लवङ्गमम् to the monkey, हनूमन्तम् to Hanuman, उवाच said.

Meaning

Thereafter, the deflated demoness of Lanka with an agitated voice, said to Hanuman, the monkeyhero:

SK-3-44Sundara Kanda 3.44

प्रसीद सुमहाबाहो त्रायस्व हरिसत्तम ।।5.3.44।। समये सौम्य तिष्ठन्ति सत्त्ववन्तो महाबलाः।

prasīda sumahābāho trāyasva harisattama ||5.3.44|| samaye saumya tiṣṭhanti sattvavanto mahābalāḥ|

Translation

सुमहाबाहो O longarmed, हरिसत्तम great monkey, प्रसीद be gracious, त्रायस्व save me, सौम्य noble, सत्त्ववन्तः hero of great strength, महाबलाः strong, समये when the time comes, तिष्ठन्ति abide.

Meaning

"O, strongshouldered great monkey be gracious. Save me. Heroes endowed with great strength stay back when the time comes.

SK-3-45Sundara Kanda 3.45

अहं तु नगरी लङ्का स्वयमेव प्लवङ्गम।।5.3.45।। निर्जिताहं त्वया वीर विक्रमेण महाबल।

ahṃ tu nagarī laṅkā svayameva plavaṅgama||5.3.45|| nirjitāhṃ tvayā vīra vikrameṇa mahābala|

Translation

प्लवङ्गम O monkey, अहं तु I, on my part, स्वयम् self, लङ्कानगर्येव city of Lanka itself, महाबल O strong one, वीर O hero, अहम् I, त्वया by you, विक्रमेण with valour, निर्जिता won.

Meaning

"O monkey I am Lanka incarnate. You have conquered me by your strength and valour.

SK-3-46Sundara Kanda 3.46

इदं तु तथ्यं शृणु वै ब्रुवन्त्या मे हरीश्वर।।5.3.46।। स्वयंभुवा पुरा दत्तं वरदानं यथा मम।

idṃ tu tathyṃ śṛṇu vai bruvantyā me harīśvara||5.3.46|| svayṃbhuvā purā dattṃ varadānṃ yathā mama|

Translation

हरीश्वर O lord of vanaras, पुरा in the past, मम to me, स्वयंभुवा by the creator Brahma, यथा as, वरदानम् a boon, दत्तम् given, इदम् this, तथ्यं तु it is true, ब्रुवन्त्या while I tell you, मे to my self, शृणु वै listen.

Meaning

"O lord of vanaras in the past Creator Brahma had given me a boon which has come true. I will tell you. listen.

SK-3-47Sundara Kanda 3.47

यदा त्वां वानरः कश्चिद्विक्रमाद्वशमानयेत्।।5.3.47।। तदा त्वया हि विज्ञेयं रक्षसां भयमागतम्।

yadā tvāṃ vānarḥ kaścidvikramādvaśamānayet||5.3.47|| tadā tvayā hi vijñeyṃ rakṣasāṃ bhayamāgatam|

Translation

यदा when, कश्चित् one, वानरः vanara, विक्रमात् by his prowess, त्वाम् you, वशम् आनयेत् vanquishes you,तदा then, राक्षसाम् for demons, भयम् danger, आगतम् will set in, त्वया by you, विज्ञेयम् know.

Meaning

'When a vanara vanquishes you by his prowess, you may know that destruction of ogres will set in.

SK-3-48Sundara Kanda 3.48

स हि मे समयः सौम्य प्राप्तोऽद्य तव दर्शनात्।।5.3.48।। स्वयंभू विहितः सत्यो न तस्यास्ति व्यतिक्रमः।

sa hi me samayḥ saumya prāpto'dya tava darśanāt||5.3.48|| svayṃbhū vihitḥ satyo na tasyāsti vyatikramḥ|

Translation

सौम्य O gentle one, अद्य today, तव your, दर्शनात् by your appearance, मे my, सः समयः that time, प्राप्तः approached, स्वयंभूविहितः this is ordained by Brahma, सत्यः it is ture, तस्य his words, व्यतिक्रमः a different course of action, नास्ति not possible.

Meaning

"O gentle one the time ordained by Brahma has come today with your presence here. The truth revealed by Brahma, the selfborn, cannot be proved otherwise.

SK-3-49Sundara Kanda 3.49

सीतानिमित्तं राज्ञस्तु रावणस्य दुरात्मनः।।5.3.49।। रक्षसां चैव सर्वेषां विनाशः समुपागतः।

sītānimittṃ rājñastu rāvaṇasya durātmanḥ||5.3.49|| rakṣasāṃ caiva sarveṣāṃ vināśḥ samupāgatḥ|

Translation

दुरात्मनः of the evilminded, राज्ञः of the king, रावणस्य Ravana's, सर्वेषाम् of all, रक्षसां च and demons, सीता निमित्तम् caused by Sita, विनाशः ruin, समुपागतः has come.

Meaning

"The ruin of all demons and evilminded king Ravana will take place due to (the abduction of) Sita.

SK-3-50Sundara Kanda 3.50

तत्प्रविश्य हरिश्रेष्ठ पुरीं रावणपालिताम्।।5.3.50।। विधत्स्व सर्वकार्याणि यानि यानीह वाञ्छसि।

tatpraviśya hariśreṣṭha purīṃ rāvaṇapālitām||5.3.50|| vidhatsva sarvakāryāṇi yāni yānīha vāñchasi|

Translation

हरिश्रेष्ठ O great vanara, तत् therefore, रावण पालिताम् ruled by Ravana, पुरीम् city, प्रविश्य after entering, इह here, यानि यानि whatever, वाञ्छसि you wish to do, सर्वकार्याणि all works, विधत्स्व undertake.

Meaning

"O great vanara enter the city ruled by Ravana and accomplish your purpose.

SK-3-51Sundara Kanda 3.51

प्रविश्य शापोपहतां हरीश्वर शुभां पुरीं राक्षसमुख्यपालिताम्। यदृच्छया त्वं जनकात्मजां सतीं विमार्ग सर्वत्र गतो यथासुखम्।।5.3.51।।

praviśya śāpopahatāṃ harīśvara śubhāṃ purīṃ rākṣasamukhyapālitām| yadṛcchayā tvṃ janakātmajāṃ satīṃ vimārga sarvatra gato yathāsukham||5.3.51||

Translation

हरीश्वर O lord of vanaras, शापोपहताम् doomed by curse, राक्षसमुख्यपालिताम् ruled by the demon chief, शुभाम् auspicious, पुरीम् city, यदृच्छया freely, प्रविश्य on entering, त्वम् you, सर्वत्र all over, गतः gone, यथासुखम् with pleasure, सतीम् a chaste lady, जनकात्मजाम् daughter of Janaka, विमार्गस्व search.

Meaning

"O lord of vanaras you may search for the chaste lady, daughter of king Janaka all over freely entering this doomed city, ruled by the chief of demons. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायाणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे तृतीयस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the third sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
