SK-2-1Sundara Kanda 2.1

स सागरमनादृष्यमतिक्रम्य महाबलः। त्रिकूटशिखरे लङ्कां स्थितां स्वस्थो ददर्श ह।।5.2.1।।

sa sāgaramanādṛṣyamatikramya mahābalḥ| trikūṭaśikhare laṅkāṃ sthitāṃ svastho dadarśa ha||5.2.1||

Translation

महाबलः mighty, सः Hanuman, अनाधृष्यम् inviolable, सागरम् sea, अतिक्रम्य having crossed, स्वस्थः comfortable, त्रिकूटशिखरे on Trikuta mountain peak, स्थिताम् standing, लङ्काम् Lanka, ददर्श ह saw.

Meaning

The mighty Hanuman crossed the inviolable sea, stood comfortably on the peak of Trikuta mountain and looked at Lanka.

SK-2-2Sundara Kanda 2.2

ततः पादपमुक्तेन पुष्पवर्षेण वीर्यवान्। अभिवृष्टः स्थितस्तत्र बभौ पुष्पमयो यथा।।5.2.2।।

tatḥ pādapamuktena puṣpavarṣeṇa vīryavān| abhivṛṣṭḥ sthitastatra babhau puṣpamayo yathā||5.2.2||

Translation

ततः then, तत्र there, स्थितः he stood, वीर्यवान् heroic one, पादपमुक्तेन dropped from the trees, पुष्पवर्षेण by the rain of flowers, अभिवृष्टः covered fully, पुष्पमयो यथा like a heap of flowers, बभौ looked.

Meaning

Covered fully with the continuous shower of flowers dropped on him from the trees, heroic Hanuman appeared as though he was a heap of flowers as he stood there.

SK-2-3Sundara Kanda 2.3

योजनानां शतं श्रीमांस्तीर्त्वाप्युत्तमविक्रमः। अनिःश्वसन् कपिस्तत्र न ग्लानिमधिगच्छति।।5.2.3।।

yojanānāṃ śatṃ śrīmāṃstīrtvāpyuttamavikramḥ| aniḥśvasan kapistatra na glānimadhigacchati||5.2.3||

Translation

उत्तमविक्रमः endowed with great prowess, श्रीमान् glorious one, कपिः monkey, योजनानाम् of yojanas, शतम् a hundred, तीर्त्वापि even after crossing also, अनिःश्वसन् without gasping, तत्र there, ग्लानिम् exhaustion, न अधिगच्छति did not experience.

Meaning

The glorious, powerful vanara (Hanuman) even after crossing a hundred yojanas, felt neither suffocated nor exasperated.

SK-2-4Sundara Kanda 2.4

शतान्यहं योजनानां क्रमेयं सुबहून्यपि। किं पुनः सागरस्यान्तं संख्यातं शतयोजनम्।।5.2.4।।

śatānyahṃ yojanānāṃ krameyṃ subahūnyapi| kiṃ punḥ sāgarasyāntṃ sṃkhyātṃ śatayojanam||5.2.4||

Translation

अहम् I, योजनानाम् of yojanas, सुबहूनि very many, शतान्यपि even hundreds of them, क्रमेयम् I can cross, शतयोजनम् a hundred yojanas, संख्यातम् a measured, सागरस्य ocean's, अन्तम् end, किं पुनः what more.

Meaning

(He said to himself), "I can cross a distance of even hundreds of yojanas. What to say of a hundred yojanas which is a calculated distance."

SK-2-5Sundara Kanda 2.5

स तु वीर्यवतां श्रेष्ठः प्लवतामपि चोत्तमः। जगाम वेगवान् लङ्कां लङ्घयित्वा महोदधिम्।।5.2.5।।

sa tu vīryavatāṃ śreṣṭhḥ plavatāmapi cottamḥ| jagāma vegavān laṅkāṃ laṅghayitvā mahodadhim||5.2.5||

Translation

वीर्यवताम् courageous, श्रेष्ठः exalted, प्लवतामपि among vanaras, उत्तमः best, सः तु he on his part, वेगवान् noted for speed, महोदधिम् ocean, लङ्घयित्वा after crossing over, लङ्काम् Lanka, जगाम reached.

Meaning

Courageous and exalted Hanuman, the best among vanaras, noted for his speed reached Lanka crossing over the great ocean on his own.

SK-2-6Sundara Kanda 2.6

शाद्वलानि च नीलानि गन्धवन्ति वनानि च। गण्डवन्ति च मध्येन जगाम नगवन्ति च।।5.2.6।।

śādvalāni ca nīlāni gandhavanti vanāni ca| gaṇḍavanti ca madhyena jagāma nagavanti ca||5.2.6||

Translation

नीलानि darkcoloured, शाद्वलानि having grassland, गन्धवन्ति fragrant, गण्डवन्ति with big rocks, मध्येन on the way, नगवन्ति च mountains also, वनानि च even trees, जगाम went .

Meaning

Hanuman passed through forests laden with fragrant flowers, bluish grassy land, big rocks and mountains covered with trees.

SK-2-7Sundara Kanda 2.7

शैलांश्च तरुसंछन्नान् वनाराजीश्च पुष्पिताः। अभिचक्राम तेजस्वी हनुमान् प्लवगर्षभः।।5.2.7।।

śailāṃśca tarusṃchannān vanārājīśca puṣpitāḥ| abhicakrāma tejasvī hanumān plavagarṣabhḥ||5.2.7||

Translation

प्लवगर्षभः bull among vanaras, तेजस्वी brilliant one, हनुमान् Hanuman, तरुसंछन्नान् dense with trees, शैलांश्च and mountains, पुष्पिताः blossomed, वनराजीश्च forest ranges, अभिचक्राम crossed.

Meaning

Brilliant Hanuman, a bull among monkeys, crossed the mountains covered with blossoming trees and forest ranges.

SK-2-8Sundara Kanda 2.8

स तस्मिन्नचले तिष्ठन्वनान्युपवनानि च। स नगाग्रे च तां लङ्कां ददर्श पवनात्मजः।।5.2.8।।

sa tasminnacale tiṣṭhanvanānyupavanāni ca| sa nagāgre ca tāṃ laṅkāṃ dadarśa pavanātmajḥ||5.2.8||

Translation

सः पवनात्मजः that son of the Windgod, तस्मिन् on that, अचले on the mountain, तिष्ठन् while standing, वनानि forests, उपवनानि च and groves, नगाग्रे on the mountain peaks, ताम् that, लङ्काम् Lanka, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

That son of the Windgod stood on the mountain and saw the forests and groves round Lanka situated on the mountain peak.

SK-2-9-13Sundara Kanda 2.9–13 (कुलकम्)

सरलान् कर्णिकारांश्च खर्जूरांश्च सुपुष्पितान्। प्रियालून्मुचुलिन्दांश्च कुटजान् केतकानपि।।5.2.9।। प्रियंङ्गून् गन्धपूर्णांश्च नीपान् सप्तच्छदांस्तथा। आसनान् कोविदारांश्च करवीरांश्च पुष्पितान्।।5.2.10।। पुष्पभारनिबद्धांश्च तथा मुकुलितानपि। पादपान् विहगाकीर्णान् पवनाधूतमस्तकान्।।5.2.11।। हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णा वापीः पद्मोत्मलायुताः। आक्रीडान् विविधान् रम्यावन् विविधांश्च जलाशयान्।।5.2.12।। सन्ततान् विविधैर्वृक्षैः सर्वर्तुफलपुष्पितैः। उद्यानानि च रम्याणि ददर्श कपिकुञ्जरः।।5.2.13।।

saralān karṇikārāṃśca kharjūrāṃśca supuṣpitān| priyālūnmuculindāṃśca kuṭajān ketakānapi||5.2.9|| priyṃṅgūn gandhapūrṇāṃśca nīpān saptacchadāṃstathā| āsanān kovidārāṃśca karavīrāṃśca puṣpitān||5.2.10|| puṣpabhāranibaddhāṃśca tathā mukulitānapi| pādapān vihagākīrṇān pavanādhūtamastakān||5.2.11|| hṃsakāraṇḍavākīrṇā vāpīḥ padmotmalāyutāḥ| ākrīḍān vividhān ramyāvan vividhāṃśca jalāśayān||5.2.12|| santatān vividhairvṛkṣaiḥ sarvartuphalapuṣpitaiḥ| udyānāni ca ramyāṇi dadarśa kapikuñjarḥ||5.2.13||

Translation

कपिकुञ्जरः elephantlike vanara, सरलान् Saralas, कर्णिकारांश्च Karnikaras, सुपुष्पितान् well bloomed, खर्जूरांश्च Datepalms, प्रियालून् Priyala, मुचुलिंदांश्च Muchulinda, कुटजान् Kutaja, केतकानपि and Kethaka, गन्धपूर्णान् filled with fragrance, प्रियङ्गूंश्च Priyangu, नीपान् Nipa, तथा so also, सप्तच्छदान् Saptachhada, आसनान् Asana, कोविदारांश्च Kovidara, पुष्पितान् flowering, करवीरांश्च Karaveera, पुष्पभारनिबद्धांश्च trees heavily loaded with flowers, तथा so also, मुकुलितानपि and buds, विहगाकीर्णान् filled with birds, पवनाधूतमस्तकान् branches shaken by the wind, पादपान् trees, हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णाः flocks of swans and waterfowls, वापीः ponds, विविधान् different kinds, रम्यान् beautiful, आक्रीडान् pleasure gardens, सर्वर्तुफलपुष्पितैः with a trees yielding fruits and flowers in all seasons, विविधैः with variety of, वृक्षैः trees, सन्ततान् stretched, विविधान् many, जलाशयांश्च water resorts, रम्याणि delightful, उद्यानानि च gardens also, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

The mighty vanara saw around Lanka, trees like sarala, karnikara in full bloom, datepalms, priyala, muchulinda, kutaja, kethaka trees filled with fragrance priyangu, kadamba, so also flowering plants like saptachhada, asana, kovidara and karaveera fully loaded with flowers and buds. These trees were thronged by birds, with their branches shaken by the wind. Flocks of swans and waterfowls were found in ponds of different types. There were various pleasure groves with flowers in bloom and fruits of all seasons and varieties of water resorts and delightful gardens.

SK-2-14-18Sundara Kanda 2.14–18 (कुलकम्)

समासाद्य च लक्ष्मीवान् लङ्कां रावणपालिताम्। परिखाभिः सपद्माभिः सोत्पलाभिरलङ्कृताम्।।5.2.14।। सीतापहरणार्थेन रावणेन सुरक्षिताम्। समन्ताद्विचरद्भिश्च राक्षसैरुग्रधन्विभिः।।5.2.15।। काञ्चनेनावृतां रम्यां प्राकारेण महापुरीम्। गृहैश्च ग्रहसंकाशैः शारदाम्बुदसन्निभैः।।5.2.16।। पाण्डुराभिः प्रतोलीभिरुच्चाभिरभिसंवृताम्। अट्टालकशताकीर्णां पताकाध्वजमालिनीम्।।5.2.17।। तोरणैः काञ्चनैर्दिव्यैर्लतापङ्त्किविचित्रितैः। ददर्श हनुमान् लङ्कां दिवि देवपुरीं यथा।।5.2.18।।

samāsādya ca lakṣmīvān laṅkāṃ rāvaṇapālitām| parikhābhiḥ sapadmābhiḥ sotpalābhiralaṅkṛtām||5.2.14|| sītāpaharaṇārthena rāvaṇena surakṣitām| samantādvicaradbhiśca rākṣasairugradhanvibhiḥ||5.2.15|| kāñcanenāvṛtāṃ ramyāṃ prākāreṇa mahāpurīm| gṛhaiśca grahasṃkāśaiḥ śāradāmbudasannibhaiḥ||5.2.16|| pāṇḍurābhiḥ pratolībhiruccābhirabhisṃvṛtām| aṭṭālakaśatākīrṇāṃ patākādhvajamālinīm||5.2.17|| toraṇaiḥ kāñcanairdivyairlatāpaṅtkivicitritaiḥ| dadarśa hanumān laṅkāṃ divi devapurīṃ yathā||5.2.18||

Translation

लक्ष्मीवान् fortunate, हनुमान् Hanuman, लङ्काम् Lanka, समासाद्य having reached, रावणपालिताम् ruled by Ravana, सपद्माभिः with lotuses, सोत्पलाभिः and blue lotuses, परिखाभिः by moats, अलङ्कृताम् decorated, सीतापहरणार्थेन keeping Sita's abduction in view, रावणेन by Ravana, समन्तात् all over, विचरद्भि: moving, उग्रधन्विभिः holding frightening bows, राक्षसैः by demons, सुरक्षिताम् well protected, काञ्चनेन with golden, प्राकारेण by boundary wall, आवृताम् surrounded, रम्याम् beautiful, महापुरीम् great city, ग्रहसङ्काशै: resembling the assembly of planets, शारदाम्बुदसन्निभैः resembling autumnal clouds, गृहैश्च houses, पाण्डुराभिः white, उच्चाभिः elevated, प्रतोलीभिः streets, अभिसंवृताम् crowded, पताकाध्वजमालिनीम् decorated with banners, flags posts and garlands,दिव्यैः wonderful, काञ्चनैः golden, लतापङ्त्किविचित्रितैः by rows of colourful creepers, तोरणैः with festoons, दिवि in heaven, देवपुरीमिव like the city of gods, लङ्काम् Lanka, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Fortunate Hanuman having reached Lanka ruled by Ravana found it surrounded by moats full of blue lotuses, guarded by demons with frightening bows, in view of Sita abducted and kept there. It was protected by boundary walls inlaid with gold that great and beautiful city with buildings resembling the assembly of planets and whitewashed, elevated houses looking like autumnal clouds and well laid out streets decorated with garlands of banners and flag posts, rows of colourful creepers and festoons. The city of Lanka appeared like Amaravati, the city of gods.

SK-2-19Sundara Kanda 2.19

गिरिमूर्ध्निं स्थितां लङ्कां पाण्डुरैर्भवनैः शुभैः। ददर्श स कपिश्रेष्ठः पुरमाकाशगं यथा।।5.2.19।।

girimūrdhniṃ sthitāṃ laṅkāṃ pāṇḍurairbhavanaiḥ śubhaiḥ| dadarśa sa kapiśreṣṭhḥ puramākāśagṃ yathā||5.2.19||

Translation

सः that, कपिश्रेष्ठः foremost of the vanaras, पाण्डुरैः with white , शुभैः with auspicious, भवनैः with mansions, गिरिमूर्ध्नि on the mountain, स्थिताम् stood, आकाशगम् यथा as if touching the sky, पुरं a city, लङ्काम् Lanka, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

The foremost among the vanaras, perched on top of the mountain saw the city of Lanka on the mountain with auspicious mansions as though touching the sky.

SK-2-20Sundara Kanda 2.20

पालितां राक्षसेन्द्रेण निर्मितां विश्वकर्मणा। प्लवमानमिवाकाशे ददर्श हनुमान् पुरीम्।।5.2.20।।

pālitāṃ rākṣasendreṇa nirmitāṃ viśvakarmaṇā| plavamānamivākāśe dadarśa hanumān purīm||5.2.20||

Translation

हनुमान् Hanuman, राक्षसेन्द्रेण by the lord of demons, पालिताम् ruled, विश्वकर्मणा by Visvakarma, निर्मिताम् constructed, आकाशे in the sky, प्लवमानामिव as if moving पुरीम् city, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

The city of Lanka, ruled by the lord of demons and built by Visvakarma looked as if it was a city floating in the sky.

SK-2-21-22Sundara Kanda 2.21–22 (युग्मम्)

वप्रप्राकारजघनां विपुलाम्बुनवाम्बराम्। शतघ्नीशूलकेशान्तामट्टालकवतंसकाम्।।5.2.21।। मनसेव कृतां लङ्कां निर्मितां विश्वकर्मणा। द्वारमुत्तरमासाद्य चिन्तयामास वानरः।।5.2.22।।

vapraprākārajaghanāṃ vipulāmbunavāmbarām| śataghnīśūlakeśāntāmaṭṭālakavatṃsakām||5.2.21|| manaseva kṛtāṃ laṅkāṃ nirmitāṃ viśvakarmaṇā| dvāramuttaramāsādya cintayāmāsa vānarḥ||5.2.22||

Translation

वानरः vanara, वप्रप्राकारजघनाम् ramparts of the fortress for hips and loins, विपुलाम्बुनवाम्बराम् moats full of water for robes, शतघ्नीशूलकेशान्ताम् spiked iron tridents for locks of hair, अट्टालकवतंसकाम् tall towers for earrings, मनसा in the mind, एव only, कृतां conceived, निर्मिताम् built, विश्वकर्मणा by Visvakarma, लङ्काम् Lanka, उत्तरं द्वारम् northern entrance, आसाद्य having reached, चिन्तयामास started thinking.

Meaning

Having reached the northern entrance of the city he started thinking that Visvakarma must have conceived Lanka as a lady with its ramparts as her hips and loins, moats filled with water as her robes, the spiked iron tridents as her locks of hair, and the tall towers as her her ear rings

SK-2-23-26Sundara Kanda 2.23–26 (कलापकम्)

कैलासशिखरप्रख्यामालिखन्तीमिवाम्बरम्। डीयमानामिवाकाशमुच्छ्रितैर्भवनोत्तमैः।।5.2.23।। सम्पूर्णां राक्षसैर्घोरैर्नागैर्भोगवतीमिव। अचिन्त्यां सुकृतां स्पष्टां कुबेराध्युषितां पुरा।।5.2.24।। दंष्ट्रिभिर्बहुभिः शूरैः शूलपट्टसपाणिभिः। रक्षितां राक्षसैर्घोरैर्गुहामाशीविषैरिव।।5.2.25।। तस्याश्च महतीं गुप्तिं सागरं च निरीक्ष्य सः। रावणं च रिपुं घोरं चिन्तयामास वानरः।।5.2.26।।

kailāsaśikharaprakhyāmālikhantīmivāmbaram| ḍīyamānāmivākāśamucchritairbhavanottamaiḥ||5.2.23|| sampūrṇāṃ rākṣasairghorairnāgairbhogavatīmiva| acintyāṃ sukṛtāṃ spaṣṭāṃ kuberādhyuṣitāṃ purā||5.2.24|| dṃṣṭribhirbahubhiḥ śūraiḥ śūlapaṭṭasapāṇibhiḥ| rakṣitāṃ rākṣasairghorairguhāmāśīviṣairiva||5.2.25|| tasyāśca mahatīṃ guptiṃ sāgarṃ ca nirīkṣya sḥ| rāvaṇṃ ca ripuṃ ghorṃ cintayāmāsa vānarḥ||5.2.26||

Translation

कैलासशिखरप्रख्याम् resembling mount Kailas, अम्बरम् sky, अलिखन्तीमिव as if scraping, उच्छ्रितैः by raised skyscrapers, भवनोत्तमैः by excellent mansions, आकाशम् sky, डीयमानामिव like flying in the air, नागैः by nagas, भोगवतीमिव like Bhogavati the nether world, घोरैः with dreadful, राक्षसैः demons, सम्पूर्णाम् totally, अचिन्त्याम् unimaginable, सुकृताम् wellbuilt, स्पष्टाम् clearly visible, पुरा earlier, कुबेराध्युषिताम् occupied by Kubera, आशीविषैः by venemous serpents, गुहामिव like a cave, दंष्ट्रिभिः having protruding fangs, शूरैः by warriors, शूलपट्टसपाणिभिः by those holding tridents and spears in their hands, घोरैः horrible, राक्षसैः by demons, रक्षिताम् guarded, सः वानरः that vanara, तस्याः her, महतीम् great, गुप्तिं security, सागरं च even the ocean, घोरम् रिपुम् terrific enemy, रावणं च Ravana also, निरीक्ष्य looked at, चिन्तयामास started thinking.

Meaning

Observing Lanka that resembled mount Kailas, with sky scrapers appearing as if flying, filled with dreadful demons and nagas protecting the city of Bhogavati (the city of Patala), unimaginably wellbuilt. It was once occupied by Kubera (half brother of Ravana). It was guarded by horrible demons holding tridents and spears in their hands. The city appeared like a cavern protected by venomous serpents with protruding fangs. Hanuman examined the high security of Lanka and looked at the ocean. He thought of the form of Ravana, a formidable enemy:

SK-2-27Sundara Kanda 2.27

आगत्यापीह हरयो भविष्यन्ति निरर्थकाः। न हि युद्धेन वै लङ्का शक्या जेतुं सुरैरपि।।5.2.27।।

āgatyāpīha harayo bhaviṣyanti nirarthakāḥ| na hi yuddhena vai laṅkā śakyā jetuṃ surairapi||5.2.27||

Translation

हरयः monkeys, इह here, आगत्यापि even after coming here, निरर्थकाः will not serve any purpose, भविष्यन्ति will be, लङ्का Lanka, युद्धेन by war, सुरैरपि even by gods, जेतुम् to win, न शक्या हि not possible.

Meaning

'It is not possible for monkeys to come here and even if they do, it is no use. Lanka is invincible even to the gods in war.

SK-2-28Sundara Kanda 2.28

इमां तु विषमां दुर्गां लङ्कां रावणपालिताम्। प्राप्यापि स महाबाहुः किं करिष्यति राघवः।।5.2.28।।

imāṃ tu viṣamāṃ durgāṃ laṅkāṃ rāvaṇapālitām| prāpyāpi sa mahābāhuḥ kiṃ kariṣyati rāghavḥ||5.2.28||

Translation

विषमाम् most difficult, दुर्गाम् formidable, रावणपालिताम् ruled by Ravana, इमाम् this, लङ्काम् Lanka, प्राप्यापि even if he comes, महाबाहुः greatarmed, सः राघवः that Rama, किं करिष्यति what can he do?

Meaning

'What will Rama the mighty armed hero do even after reaching this formidable city of Lanka ruled by Ravana?

SK-2-29Sundara Kanda 2.29

अवकाशो नसान्त्वस्य राक्षसेष्वभिगम्यते। न दानस्य न भेदस्य नैव युद्धस्य दृश्यते।।5.2.29।।

avakāśo nasāntvasya rākṣaseṣvabhigamyate| na dānasya na bhedasya naiva yuddhasya dṛśyate||5.2.29||

Translation

राक्षसेषु with demons, सान्त्वस्य for reconciliation, अवकाशः scope, न अभिगम्यते not expected, दानस्य by making offers, न not, भेदस्य by dissension, न not, युद्धस्य of war, नैव दृश्यते not feasible.

Meaning

'There is no scope for reconciliation with the demons. It is not possible to win over them with gifts. They cannot be divided by dissension. There is no scope for war.

SK-2-30Sundara Kanda 2.30

चतुर्णामेव हि गतिर्वानराणां महात्मनाम्। वालिपुत्रस्य नीलस्य मम राज्ञश्च धीमतः।।5.2.30।।

caturṇāmeva hi gatirvānarāṇāṃ mahātmanām| vāliputrasya nīlasya mama rājñaśca dhīmatḥ||5.2.30||

Translation

वालिपुत्रस्य Vali's son's, नीलस्य of Nila, मम mine, धीमतः of the wise one, राज्ञश्च king's, महात्मनाम् of the great souls, चतुर्णाम् of these four, वानराणाम् these four among vanaras only, गतिः हि can come here.

Meaning

'Only four great monkeys can have access to this place. They are Angada the son of Vali, Nila, Sugriva, the wise king of monkeys and myself.

SK-2-31Sundara Kanda 2.31

यावज्जानामि वैदेहीं यदि जीवति वा न वा। तत्रैव चिन्तयिष्यामि दृष्ट्वा तां जनकात्मजाम्।।5.2.31।।

yāvajjānāmi vaidehīṃ yadi jīvati vā na vā| tatraiva cintayiṣyāmi dṛṣṭvā tāṃ janakātmajām||5.2.31||

Translation

वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, यदि जीवति वा if she is alive or, न वा not alive, यावत् जानामि until I know, ताम् her, जनकात्मजाम् Janaka's daughter, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, तत्रैव there on the spot, चिन्तयिष्यामि I shall think over.

Meaning

'Whether Janaka's daughter, Vaidehi is alive or not is not known. After seeing her I shall think over'.

SK-2-32Sundara Kanda 2.32

ततः स चिन्तयामास मुहूर्तं कपिकुञ्जरः। गिरिशृङ्गे स्थितस्तस्मिन् रामस्याभ्युदये रतः।।5.2.32।।

tatḥ sa cintayāmāsa muhūrtṃ kapikuñjarḥ| giriśṛṅge sthitastasmin rāmasyābhyudaye ratḥ||5.2.32||

Translation

ततः then, रामस्य Rama's, अभ्युदये in his welfare, रतः lay, सः that, कपिकुञ्जरः elephant among vanaras, तस्मिन् on that, गिरिशृङ्गे on the mountain peak, स्थितः stood, मुहूर्तम् for a short while, चिन्तयामास pondered.

Meaning

Standing on the mountain, the elephant among monkeys pondered for a while on the means of finding Sita, in which lay the welfare of Rama.

SK-2-33Sundara Kanda 2.33

अनेन रूपेण मया न शक्या रक्षसां पुरी। प्रवेष्टुं राक्षसैर्गुप्ता क्रूरैर्बलसमन्वितैः।।5.2.33।।

anena rūpeṇa mayā na śakyā rakṣasāṃ purī| praveṣṭuṃ rākṣasairguptā krūrairbalasamanvitaiḥ||5.2.33||

Translation

क्रूरैः by the fierce, बलसमन्वितैः by the powerful ones, राक्षसैः by demons, गुप्ता guarded, रक्षसाम् of demons, पुरी city, मया by me, अनेन by this present, रूपेण form, प्रवेष्टुम् to enter, न शक्या not possible.

Meaning

'I shall not be able in my present form to enter the city guarded by fierce and powerful demons.

SK-2-34Sundara Kanda 2.34

उग्रौजसो महावीर्या बलवन्तश्च राक्षसाः। वञ्चनीया मया सर्वे जानकीं परिमार्गता।।5.2.34।।

ugraujaso mahāvīryā balavantaśca rākṣasāḥ| vañcanīyā mayā sarve jānakīṃ parimārgatā||5.2.34||

Translation

जानकीम् Sita, परिमार्गता while searching, मया by me, उग्रौजसः energetic, महावीर्याः very valiant, बलवन्तश्च powerful, राक्षसाः demons, सर्वे all, वञ्चनीयाः should be deceived.

SK-2-35Sundara Kanda 2.35

लक्ष्यालक्ष्येण रूपेण रात्रौ लङ्का पुरी मया। प्रवेष्टुं प्राप्तकालं मे कृत्यं साधयितुं महत्।।5.2.35।।

lakṣyālakṣyeṇa rūpeṇa rātrau laṅkā purī mayā| praveṣṭuṃ prāptakālṃ me kṛtyṃ sādhayituṃ mahat||5.2.35||

Translation

मे for me, महत् great, कृत्यम् task, साधयितुम् to accomplish, मया by me, लक्ष्यालक्ष्येण in a non conspicious, रूपेण form, रात्रौ during night, लङ्कापुरी city of Lanka, प्रवेष्टुम् to enter, प्राप्तकालम् is the appropriate time.

Meaning

'To accomplish this great task I will have to assume an inconspicious form and enter the city of Lanka in the night as that is the appropriate time.

SK-2-36Sundara Kanda 2.36

तां पुरीं तादृशीं दृष्ट्वा दुराधर्षां सुरासुरैः। हनुमान् चिन्तयामास विनिश्चित्य मुहुर्मुहुः।।5.2.36।।

tāṃ purīṃ tādṛśīṃ dṛṣṭvā durādharṣāṃ surāsuraiḥ| hanumān cintayāmāsa viniścitya muhurmuhuḥ||5.2.36||

Translation

हनुमान् Hanuman, सुरासुरैः by gods and demons, दुराधर्षाम् unassailable, तादृशीम् such, ताम् that, पुरीम् city, दृष्ट्वा seeing, विनिश्चित्य sighing, मुहुर्मुहुः again and again, चिन्तयामास reflected.

Meaning

'Looking at the city, unassailable even to gods and demons, Hanuman sighed again and again thinking:

SK-2-37Sundara Kanda 2.37

केनोपायेन पश्येयं मैथिलीं जनकात्मजाम्। अदृष्टो राक्षसेन्द्रेण रावणेन दुरात्मना।।5.2.37।।

kenopāyena paśyeyṃ maithilīṃ janakātmajām| adṛṣṭo rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā||5.2.37||

Translation

दुरात्मना evilminded, राक्षसेन्द्रेण by lord of demons, रावणेन by Ravana, अदृष्टः without being seen, केन for that, उपायेन means, जनकात्मजाम् Janaka's daughter, मैथिलीम् Mythili, पश्येयम् will be possible to find.

Meaning

'By what means can I find Mythili, daughter of Janaka, without being noticed by the evilminded Ravana, the lord of demons?

SK-2-38Sundara Kanda 2.38

न विनश्येत्कथं कार्यं रामस्य विदितात्मनः। एकामेकश्च वश्येयं रहिते जनकात्मजाम्।।5.2.38।।

na vinaśyetkathṃ kāryṃ rāmasya viditātmanḥ| ekāmekaśca vaśyeyṃ rahite janakātmajām||5.2.38||

Translation

विदितात्मनः one who is endowed with selfknowledge, रामस्य Rama's, कार्यम् task, कथम् how, न विनश्येत् will not be spoilt, एकश्च single person, रहिते in a private audience, एकाम् her, जनकात्मजाम् Sita, पश्येयम् possible to see.

Meaning

'How can the purpose of Rama, a noble soul be not spoilt? I may have a private audience with the daughter of Janaka.

SK-2-39Sundara Kanda 2.39

भूताश्चार्था विपद्यन्ते देशकालविरोधिताः। विक्लबं दूतमासाद्य तमः सूर्योदये यथा।।5.2.39।।

bhūtāścārthā vipadyante deśakālavirodhitāḥ| viklabṃ dūtamāsādya tamḥ sūryodaye yathā||5.2.39||

Translation

विक्लबम् one who has no sense, दूतम् messenger, आसाद्य is after getting, देशकालविरोधिताः set in opposition to proper time and place, भूताः it plan, अर्था: the planned strategies, सूर्योदये at the time of Sunrise, तमः यथा like darkness, विपद्यन्ते will be destroyed.

Meaning

'Just as darkness disappears at Sunrise, wellplanned strategies also fail at the hands of a thoughtless messenger when they are set in opposition to proper time and place.

SK-2-40Sundara Kanda 2.40

अर्थानर्थान्तरे बुद्धिर्निश्चितापि न शोभते। घातयन्ति हि कार्याणि दूताः पण्डितमानिनः।।5.2.40।।

arthānarthāntare buddhirniścitāpi na śobhate| ghātayanti hi kāryāṇi dūtāḥ paṇḍitamāninḥ||5.2.40||

Translation

निश्चिता अपि even though decided, बुद्धि: intelligent, अर्थानर्थान्तरे between a proper course of action and inaction, न शोभते not look nice, पण्डितमानिनः clever and capable, दूताः messengers, कार्याणि efforts, घातयन्ति हि will spoil.

Meaning

'Even though messengers are not intelligent, they think themselves clever and capable. They act foolishly, swerve from proper course of action and fail in their effort.

SK-2-41Sundara Kanda 2.41

न विनश्येत्कथं कार्यं वैक्लब्यं न कथं भवेत्। लङ्घनं च समुद्रस्य कथं नु न वृथा भवेत्।।5.2.41।।

na vinaśyetkathṃ kāryṃ vaiklabyṃ na kathṃ bhavet| laṅghanṃ ca samudrasya kathṃ nu na vṛthā bhavet||5.2.41||

Translation

कार्यम् effort, कथम् how, विनश्येत् not be destroyed, वैक्लब्यम् thoughtlessness, कथम् how, न भवेत् will not be, समुद्रस्य ocean's, लङ्घनं च croosing, कथं नु how indeed, वृथा waste, न भवेत् not become?

Meaning

'How should the task be performed? How to avoid impetuousness? How can my purpose of crossing the ocean be not wasted?

SK-2-42Sundara Kanda 2.42

मयि दृष्टे तु रक्षोभी रामस्य विदितात्मनः। भवेद्व्यर्थमिदं कार्यं रावणानर्थमिच्छतः।।5.2.42।।

mayi dṛṣṭe tu rakṣobhī rāmasya viditātmanḥ| bhavedvyarthamidṃ kāryṃ rāvaṇānarthamicchatḥ||5.2.42||

Translation

मयि I am, रक्षोभिः by the demons, दृष्टे तु seen, रावणानर्थम् destruction of Ravana, इच्छतः desiring, विदितात्मनः divine knowledge, रामस्य Rama's, इदम् this, कार्यम् plan, व्यर्थम् wasted, भवेत् will be.

Meaning

'If I am seen by the demons, the plan of Rama, possessor of selfknowledge, to kill Ravana, will be wasted.

SK-2-43Sundara Kanda 2.43

न हि शक्यं क्वचित् स्थातुमविज्ञातेन राक्षसैः। अपि राक्षसरूपेण किमुतान्येन केनचित्।।5.2.43।।

na hi śakyṃ kvacit sthātumavijñātena rākṣasaiḥ| api rākṣasarūpeṇa kimutānyena kenacit||5.2.43||

Translation

राक्षसैः by demons, अविज्ञातेन without being identified, राक्षसरूपेणापि even by assuming the form of a demon, क्वचित् anywhere, स्थातुम् to stay with them, न शक्यं हि not be possible, अन्येन in other form, केनचित् by any form, किमुत what to say.

Meaning

'It is difficult to stay with the demon anywhere here even in the disguise of a demon without being identified. It will not be possible to remain unidentified even by assuming any other form.

SK-2-44Sundara Kanda 2.44

वायुरप्यत्र नाज्ञातश्चरेदिति मतिर्मम। न ह्य स्त्यविदितं किञ्चिद्राक्षसानां बलीयसाम्।।5.2.44।।

vāyurapyatra nājñātaścarediti matirmama| na hya styaviditṃ kiñcidrākṣasānāṃ balīyasām||5.2.44||

Translation

अत्र here, वायुरपि even wind, अज्ञातः without being detected, न चरेत् may not move, इति thus, मम my, मतिः thought, बलीयसाम् the powerful, राक्षसानाम् of demons, अविदितं unknown, किञ्चित् even a little indeed, नास्ति हि not.

Meaning

'I think even the wind who has no form cannot move here without being detected. Nothing escapes the notice of powerful demons. There is nothing unknown to them.

SK-2-45Sundara Kanda 2.45

इहाहं यदि तिष्ठामि स्वेन रूपेण संवृतः। विनाशमुपयास्यामि भर्तुरर्थश्च हीयते।।5.2.45।।

ihāhṃ yadi tiṣṭhāmi svena rūpeṇa sṃvṛtḥ| vināśamupayāsyāmi bharturarthaśca hīyate||5.2.45||

Translation

अहम् I, स्वेन with my own, रूपेण with form, संवृतः hidden, इह here, तिष्ठामि यदि if I stay, विनाशम् death, उपयास्यामि will befall me, भर्तुः lord, अर्थश्च work also, हीयते will fail.

Meaning

'I will surely meet with death if I hide here in my original form and my master's mission also will be spoilt.

SK-2-46Sundara Kanda 2.46

तदहं स्वेन रूपेण रजन्यां ह्रस्वतां गतः। लङ्कामभिपतिष्यामि राघवस्यार्थसिद्धये।।5.2.46।।

tadahṃ svena rūpeṇa rajanyāṃ hrasvatāṃ gatḥ| laṅkāmabhipatiṣyāmi rāghavasyārthasiddhaye||5.2.46||

Translation

तत् therefore, अहम् I, स्वेन रूपेण in my own form, ह्रस्वताम् in a tiny form, गतः assuming, राघवस्य Rama's, अर्थसिद्धये to accomplish, रजन्याम् in the night, लङ्काम् Lanka, अभिपतिष्यामि I shall jump.

Meaning

'Therefore I shall transform myself into a tiny form and jump about the city of Lanka during night time in order to accomplish Raghava's purpose.

SK-2-47Sundara Kanda 2.47

रावणस्य पुरीं रात्रौ प्रविश्य सुदुरासदाम्। विचिन्वन् भवनं सर्वं द्रक्ष्यामि जनकात्मजाम्।।5.2.47।।

rāvaṇasya purīṃ rātrau praviśya sudurāsadām| vicinvan bhavanṃ sarvṃ drakṣyāmi janakātmajām||5.2.47||

Translation

सुदुरासदाम् quite inaccessible, पुरीम् city, रात्रौ at night, प्रविश्य after entering, रावणस्य Ravana's, सर्वम् all, भवनम् palace, विचिन्वन् search all over, जनकात्मजाम् Janaka's daughter, Sita, द्रक्ष्यामि I will see.

Meaning

'Entering by night the inaccessible city of Ravana, I shall search all over the palace and find Sita'.

SK-2-48Sundara Kanda 2.48

इति सञ्चिन्त्य हनुमान् सूर्यस्यास्तमयं कपिः। आचकाङ्क्षे तदा वीरो वैदेह्या दर्शनोत्सुकः।।5.2.48।।

iti sañcintya hanumān sūryasyāstamayṃ kapiḥ| ācakāṅkṣe tadā vīro vaidehyā darśanotsukḥ||5.2.48||

Translation

वीरः कपिः heroic vanara, हनुमान् Hanuman, इति thus, सञ्चिन्त्य after thinking, वैदेह्याः Vaidehi's, दर्शनोत्सुकः keen to see, तदा then, सूर्यस्य Sun's, अस्तमयम् setting time, आचकाङ्क्षे looked forward.

Meaning

Having planned in that manner the heroic Hanuman keen to see Sita waited for the Sunset.

SK-2-49Sundara Kanda 2.49

सूर्ये चास्तं गते रात्रौ देहं सङ्क्षिप्य मारुतिः। पृषदंशकमात्रः सन् बभूवाद्भुतदर्शनः।।5.2.49।।

sūrye cāstṃ gate rātrau dehṃ saṅkṣipya mārutiḥ| pṛṣadṃśakamātrḥ san babhūvādbhutadarśanḥ||5.2.49||

Translation

सूर्ये when the Sun, अस्तंगते च set, मारुतिः son of the windgod Maruti, रात्रौ in the night, देहम् body, सङ्क्षिप्य after reducing to small size, पृषदंशकमात्रः सन् not bigger than the size of a cat, अद्भुतदर्शनः wonderful to behold, बभूव appeared.

Meaning

When Sun set, Maruti, the son of the Windgod, reduced himself at night to the small size of a cat, wonderful to behold.

SK-2-50Sundara Kanda 2.50

प्रदोषकाले हनुमांस्तूर्णमुत्प्लुत्य वीर्यवान्। प्रविवेश पुरीं रम्यां सुविभक्तमहापथाम्।।5.2.50।।

pradoṣakāle hanumāṃstūrṇamutplutya vīryavān| praviveśa purīṃ ramyāṃ suvibhaktamahāpathām||5.2.50||

Translation

वीर्यवान् courageous, हनुमान् Hanuman, प्रदोषकाले at dusk, तूर्णम् at once, उत्ल्पुत्य jumped, सुविभक्तमहापथाम् a place well laidoutgreat royal path, रम्याम् beautiful, पुरीम् city, प्रविवेश entered.

Meaning

As soon as dusk had set in, courageous Hanuman jumped in and entered the well laidout royal path of the beautiful city.

SK-2-51-52Sundara Kanda 2.51–52 (युग्मम्)

प्रासादमालाविततां स्तम्भैः काञ्चनराजतैः। शातकुम्भमयैर्जालैर्गन्थर्वनगरोपमाम्।।5.2.51।। सप्तभौमाष्टभौमैश्च स ददर्श महापुरीम्। तलैः स्फाटिकसंकीर्णैः कार्तस्वरविभूषितैः।।5.2.52।।

prāsādamālāvitatāṃ stambhaiḥ kāñcanarājataiḥ| śātakumbhamayairjālairgantharvanagaropamām||5.2.51|| saptabhaumāṣṭabhaumaiśca sa dadarśa mahāpurīm| talaiḥ sphāṭikasṃkīrṇaiḥ kārtasvaravibhūṣitaiḥ||5.2.52||

Translation

सः that, प्रासादमालावितताम् stretched with a row of mansions, काञ्चनराजतैः with gold and silver, स्तम्भैः with pillars, शातकुम्भमयैः made of gold, जालैः fretwork, गन्धर्वनगरोपमाम् resembling the city of gandharvas, सप्तभौमाष्टभौमैः च seven and eight storied mansions, स्फाटिकसंकीर्णैः inlaid with crystals, कार्तस्वरविभूषितैः decorated with gold, तलैः floors, महापुरीम् the grand city, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

Hanuman saw the city stretched with rows of buildings all over,with seven or eight storied mansions, which had pillars of gold and silver, windows with fretwork of gold, inlaid with crystals, floors decorated with gold, resembling the grand city of gandharvas.

SK-2-53Sundara Kanda 2.53

वैडूर्यमणिचित्रैश्च मुक्ताजालविभूषितैः। तलैः शुशुभिरे तानि भवनान्यत्र रक्षसाम्।।5.2.53।।

vaiḍūryamaṇicitraiśca muktājālavibhūṣitaiḥ| talaiḥ śuśubhire tāni bhavanānyatra rakṣasām||5.2.53||

Translation

अत्र here, रक्षसाम् of demons, भवनानि mansions, वैडूर्यमणिचित्रैः inlaid with precious gems, मुक्ताजालविभूषितैः fretwork ornamented with pearls, तलैः with floors, शुशुभिरे looked splendid.

Meaning

Inlaid with precious gems and fretwork, and ornamented with pearls, the mansions of demons looked splendid.

SK-2-54Sundara Kanda 2.54

काञ्चनानि च चित्राणि तोरणानि च रक्षसाम्। लङ्कामुद्योतयामासुः सर्वतः समलङ्कृताम्।।5.2.54।।

kāñcanāni ca citrāṇi toraṇāni ca rakṣasām| laṅkāmudyotayāmāsuḥ sarvatḥ samalaṅkṛtām||5.2.54||

Translation

रक्षसाम् of demons, काञ्चनानि golden ones, चित्राणि colourful ones, तोरणानि archways, समलङ्कृताम् decorated all over, लङ्काम् Lanka, सर्वतः everywhere, उद्योतयामासुः illumined.

Meaning

The golden archways of the demon were colourful. They illuminated the well decorated Lanka from all sides.

SK-2-55Sundara Kanda 2.55

अचिन्त्यामद्भुताकारां दृष्टवा लङ्कां महाकपिः। आसीद्विषण्णो हृष्टश्च वैदेह्या दर्शनोत्सुकः।।5.2.55।।

acintyāmadbhutākārāṃ dṛṣṭavā laṅkāṃ mahākapiḥ| āsīdviṣaṇṇo hṛṣṭaśca vaidehyā darśanotsukḥ||5.2.55||

Translation

महाकपिः great vanara, अचिन्त्याम् unimaginable, अद्भुताकाराम् wonderful, लङ्काम् Lanka, दृष्ट्वा after seeing, वैदेह्याः Vaidehi's, दर्शनोत्सुकः eager to see, विषण्णः sad, हृष्टश्च and glad, आसीत् became.

Meaning

Beholding Lanka of unimaginable, wonderful glory, the great monkey keen to see Sita became sad as well as elated at once (He did not know how to find Sita in that city and felt sad. But he was also elated that he was going to meet her at any cost.)

SK-2-56Sundara Kanda 2.56

स पाण्डुराविद्धविमानमालिनीं महार्हजाम्बूनदजालतोरणाम्। यशस्विनीं रावणबाहुपालितां क्षपाचरैर्भीमबलैः समावृताम्।।5.2.56।।

sa pāṇḍurāviddhavimānamālinīṃ mahārhajāmbūnadajālatoraṇām| yaśasvinīṃ rāvaṇabāhupālitāṃ kṣapācarairbhīmabalaiḥ samāvṛtām||5.2.56||

Translation

पाण्डुराविद्धविमानमालिनीम् a city having a garland of white mansions with several floors, महार्हजाम्बूनदजालतोरणाम् the archways and windows latticed with gold strings, यशस्विनीम् famed, भीमबलैः by warriors of terrific strength, क्षपाचरैः by demons, समावृताम् surrounded, रावणबाहुपालिताम् ruled by Ravana.

Meaning

He found that famed place with a garland of tall, white mansions, conspicuous with archways latticed with gold strings, protected by mighty Ravana and surrounded by terrific demons.

SK-2-57Sundara Kanda 2.57

चन्द्रोऽपि साचिव्यमिवास्य कुर्वंस्तारागणैर्मध्यगतो विराजन्। ज्योत्स्नावितानेन वितत्य लोक मुत्तिष्ठते नैकसहस्ररश्मि:।।5.2.57।।

candro'pi sācivyamivāsya kurvṃstārāgaṇairmadhyagato virājan| jyotsnāvitānena vitatya loka muttiṣṭhate naikasahasraraśmi:||5.2.57||

Translation

नैकसहस्ररश्मि: having thousands of rays, चन्द्रोऽपि even the Moon, तारागणैः with multitude of stars, मध्यगतः came in the centre, विराजन् illumining, लोकम् the world, ज्योत्स्नावितानेन with a canopy of moonlight, वितत्य having expanded, अस्य his, साचिव्यम् ministerial assistance, कुर्वन्निव as if to render, उत्तिष्ठते rises.

Meaning

Even the Moon rose with thousands of rays in the centre of multitudes of stars overspreading and illumining the world with a canopy of bright beams, as if to render ministerial help to Hanuman.

SK-2-58Sundara Kanda 2.58

शङ्खप्रभं क्षीरमृणालवर्ण मुद्गच्छमानं व्यवभासमानम्। ददर्श चन्द्रं स हरिप्रवीरः पोप्लूयमानं सरसीव हंसम्।।5.2.58।।

śaṅkhaprabhṃ kṣīramṛṇālavarṇa mudgacchamānṃ vyavabhāsamānam| dadarśa candrṃ sa haripravīrḥ poplūyamānṃ sarasīva hṃsam||5.2.58||

Translation

सः हरिप्रवीरः that heroic vanara, उद्गच्छमानम् rising up and looking, शङ्खप्रभम् shining like the white conch, व्यवभासमानम् hiding and coming out, क्षीरमृणालवर्णम् like the colur of milk and lotus stalks, सरसि a lake, पोप्लूयमानम् floating, हंसमिव like a swan, चन्द्रम् the Moon, ददर्श saw.

Meaning

The heroic vanara saw the rising Moon flitting in and out shining like a fresh white conch, in the colour of milk and lotus stalks, bright like a swan floating in the lakelike sky. इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये सुन्दरकाण्डे द्वितीयस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the second sarga of Sundarakanda of the holy Ramayana, the first epic composed by sage Valmiki.
