SK-23-1Sundara Kanda 23.1

इत्युक्त्वा मैथिलीं राजा रावणः शत्रुरावणः। सन्दिश्य च ततः सर्वा राक्षसीर्निर्जगाम ह।।5.23.1।।

ityuktvā maithilīṃ rājā rāvaṇḥ śatrurāvaṇḥ| sandiśya ca tatḥ sarvā rākṣasīrnirjagāma ha||5.23.1||

Translation

राजा king, शत्रुरावणः tormentor of enemies, रावणः Ravana, मैथिलीम् Mythili, इति thus, उक्त्वा having spoken, ततः thereafter, सर्वाः all, राक्षसीः demonesses, सन्दिश्य च having commanded, निर्जगाम departed.

Meaning

King Ravana, tormentor of enemies, having thus spoken to Mythili commanded the demonesses and departed.

SK-23-2Sundara Kanda 23.2

निष्क्रान्ते राक्षसेन्द्रे तु पुनरन्तःपुरं गते। राक्षस्यो भीमरूपास्ताः सीतां समभिदुद्रुवुः।।5.23.2।।

niṣkrānte rākṣasendre tu punarantḥpurṃ gate| rākṣasyo bhīmarūpāstāḥ sītāṃ samabhidudruvuḥ||5.23.2||

Translation

राक्षसेन्द्रे the lord of demons, निष्क्रान्ते having left, पुनः again, अन्तःपुरम् to the inner chambers, गते gone, भीमरूपाः women of hideous appearance, ताः those, राक्षस्य: demonesses, सीताम् Sita, समभिदुद्रुवुः ran to her.

Meaning

As the demon king left for his abode all the demonesses of hideous looks rushed towards Sita and crowded around her.

SK-23-3Sundara Kanda 23.3

ततः सीतामुपागम्य राक्षस्यः क्रोधमूर्छिताः। परं परुषया वाचा वैदेहीमिदमब्रुवन्।।5.23.3।।

tatḥ sītāmupāgamya rākṣasyḥ krodhamūrchitāḥ| parṃ paruṣayā vācā vaidehīmidamabruvan||5.23.3||

Translation

ततः then, राक्षस्यः demonesses, सीताम् to Sita, उपागम्य went near, क्रोधमूर्छिताः senses lost in anger, परम् very, परुषया harsh, वाचा words, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, इदम् thus, अब्रुवन् spoke.

Meaning

The demonesses, overcome with anger, approached Sita and harshly said:

SK-23-4Sundara Kanda 23.4

पौलस्त्यस्य वरिष्ठस्य रावणस्य महात्मनः। दशग्रीवस्य भार्या त्वं सीते न बहुमन्यसे।।5.23.4।।

paulastyasya variṣṭhasya rāvaṇasya mahātmanḥ| daśagrīvasya bhāryā tvṃ sīte na bahumanyase||5.23.4||

Translation

सीते O Sita, पौलस्त्यस्य in Paulastya's, वरिष्ठस्य the distinguished, महात्मनः of the highsouled, दशग्रीवस्य tennecked, रावणस्य Ravana's, भार्यात्वम् to be his wife, न बहुमन्यसे not treating it as a privilege

Meaning

'O Sita don't you think it is a privilege to be the wife of the highsouled, tennecked Ravana, who is the distinguished king of a high family of sage Paulastya?

SK-23-5Sundara Kanda 23.5

ततस्त्वेकजटा नाम राक्षसी वाक्यमब्रवीत्। आमन्त्य्र क्रोधाताम्राक्षी सीतां करतलोदरीम्।।5.23.5।।

tatastvekajaṭā nāma rākṣasī vākyamabravīt| āmantyra krodhātāmrākṣī sītāṃ karatalodarīm||5.23.5||

Translation

ततः then, एकजटा नाम called Ekajata, राक्षसी shedemon, क्रोधाताम्राक्षी eyes red with anger, करतलोदरीम् with a belly of the size of the palm, सीताम् Sita, आमन्त्य्र having called, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Then Ekajata, a shedemon of hideous looks, eyes red with anger and a belly of the size of the palm said to Sita:

SK-23-6Sundara Kanda 23.6

प्रजापतीनां षण्णां तु चतुर्थो यः प्रजापतिः। मानसो ब्रह्मणः पुत्रः पुलस्त्य इति विश्रुतः।।5.23.6।।

prajāpatīnāṃ ṣaṇṇāṃ tu caturtho yḥ prajāpatiḥ| mānaso brahmaṇḥ putrḥ pulastya iti viśrutḥ||5.23.6||

Translation

षण्णाम् of the six, प्रजापतीनाम् of Prajapatis, यः he who was, चतुर्थः fourth, प्रजापतिः, ब्रह्मणः Brahma, मानसः born out of mind, पुत्रः a son, पुलस्त्यः Pulastya, इति thus, विश्रुतः very famous.

Meaning

'The mindborn son of Brahma is well known as Paulastya. He was the fourth among the six Prajapatis (Maricha, Atri, Angira, Pulastya, Plaha, Kratu).

SK-23-7Sundara Kanda 23.7

पुलस्त्यस्य तु तेजस्वी महर्षिर्मानसः सुतः। नाम्ना स विश्रवा नाम प्रजापतिसमप्रभः।।5.23.7।।

pulastyasya tu tejasvī maharṣirmānasḥ sutḥ| nāmnā sa viśravā nāma prajāpatisamaprabhḥ||5.23.7||

Translation

नाम्ना with the name, विश्रवा नाम Vishravas by name, प्रजापतिसमप्रभः equal in splendour to Prajapati, तेजस्वी glorious, सः महर्षिः that sage, पुलस्त्यस्य Pulastya's, मानसः mindborn, सुतः son.

Meaning

'This glorious mindborn sage Pulastya's son is the famous Vishrava who, in glory and splendour was equal to Prajapatis.

SK-23-8Sundara Kanda 23.8

तस्य पुत्रो विशालाक्षि रावणः शत्रुरावणः। तस्य त्वं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य भार्या भवितुमर्हसि।।5.23.8।। मयोक्तं चारुसर्वाङ्गिः वाक्यं किं नानुमन्यसे।

tasya putro viśālākṣi rāvaṇḥ śatrurāvaṇḥ| tasya tvṃ rākṣasendrasya bhāryā bhavitumarhasi||5.23.8|| mayoktṃ cārusarvāṅgiḥ vākyṃ kiṃ nānumanyase|

Translation

विशालाक्षि a largeeyed lady, शत्रुरावण: a tormentor of enemies, रावणः Ravana, तस्य his, पुत्रः son, त्वम् you, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य lord of demons, तस्य his, भार्या wife, भवितुम् to become, अर्हसि you deserve, चारुसर्वाङ्गि a lady of beautiful limbs, मया by me, उक्तम् spoken, वाक्यम् words, किम् why, नानुमन्यसे not heeding.

Meaning

'O largeeyes lady to become the wife of the lord of demons is a stroke of good luck. You deserve to be one. O lady of beautiful limbs why don't you accept his proposal?'

SK-23-9Sundara Kanda 23.9

ततो हरिजटा नाम राक्षसी वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।5.23.9।। विवर्त्य नयने कोपान्मार्जारसदृशेक्षणा।

tato harijaṭā nāma rākṣasī vākyamabravīt||5.23.9|| vivartya nayane kopānmārjārasadṛśekṣaṇā|

Translation

ततः then, मार्जारसदृशेक्षणा cateyed, हरिजटा नाम called Harijata, राक्षसी ogress, कोपात् with anger, नयने both eyes, विवर्त्य rolling, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Then an ogress called Harijata said this in anger, her cateyes rolling:

SK-23-10Sundara Kanda 23.10

येन देवास्त्रयस्त्रिंशद्देवराजश्च निर्जिताः।।5.23.10।। तस्य त्वं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य भार्या भवितुमर्हसि।

yena devāstrayastriṃśaddevarājaśca nirjitāḥ||5.23.10|| tasya tvṃ rākṣasendrasya bhāryā bhavitumarhasi|

Translation

येन by him, त्रयस्त्रिंशत् thirtythree, देवाः gods, देवराजश्च Indra, king of the gods, निर्जिताः are conquered, तस्य his, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य of the lord of ogres, त्वम् you, भार्या wife, भवितुम् to become, अर्हसि you ought to be.

Meaning

'You ought to be the wife of the lord of ogres who has vanquished thirty three crores of gods including Indra, their king.'

SK-23-11Sundara Kanda 23.11

ततस्तु प्रघसा नाम राक्षसी क्रोधमूर्छिता।।5.23.11।। भर्त्सयन्ती तदा घोरमिदं वचनमब्रवीत्।

tatastu praghasā nāma rākṣasī krodhamūrchitā||5.23.11|| bhartsayantī tadā ghoramidṃ vacanamabravīt|

Translation

ततः then, प्रघसा नाम named Praghasa, राक्षसी ogress, क्रोधमूर्छिता overwhelmed with anger, तदा then, भर्त्सयन्ती deriding, घोरम् terrific manner, इदम् these, वचनं तु words also, अब्रवीत् spoke.

Meaning

Then an ogress named Praghasa, overwhelmed with anger, deriding Sita said these terrible words:

SK-23-12Sundara Kanda 23.12

वीर्योत्सिक्तस्य शूरस्य सङ्ग्रामेषु निवर्तिनः।।5.23.12।। बलिनो वीर्ययुक्तस्य भार्यात्वं किं न लप्स्यसे।

vīryotsiktasya śūrasya saṅgrāmeṣu nivartinḥ||5.23.12|| balino vīryayuktasya bhāryātvṃ kiṃ na lapsyase|

Translation

वीर्योत्सिक्तस्य Valiant, शूरस्य hero's, सङ्ग्रामेषु in wars, अनिवर्तिनः hero who never retreats, बलिनः powerful, वीर्ययुक्तस्य mighty one, भार्यात्वम् to be a wife, किम् why, न लप्स्यसे not wishing.

Meaning

'Why don't you wish to be the wife of such a mighty and powerful king, a valiant hero who has never beaten a retreat in war?

SK-23-13Sundara Kanda 23.13

प्रियां बहुमतां भार्यां त्यक्त्वा राजा महाबलः।।5.23.13।। सर्वासां च महाभागां त्वामुपैष्यति रावणः।

priyāṃ bahumatāṃ bhāryāṃ tyaktvā rājā mahābalḥ||5.23.13|| sarvāsāṃ ca mahābhāgāṃ tvāmupaiṣyati rāvaṇḥ|

Translation

राजा king, महाबलः mighty, रावणःRavana, प्रियाम् his dear, बहुमताम् favourrite lady, सर्वासाम् of all, महाभागाम् highly respectable, भार्याम् wife, त्यक्त्वा renouncing, त्वाम् you, उपैष्यति he is desirous

Meaning

'Even renouncing his highly respectable, favourite wife among all, mighty Ravana is prepared to accept you.

SK-23-14Sundara Kanda 23.14

समृद्धं स्त्रीसहस्रेण नानारत्नोपशोभितम्।।5.23.14।। अन्तःपुरं समुत्सृज्य त्वामुपैष्यति रावणः।

samṛddhṃ strīsahasreṇa nānāratnopaśobhitam||5.23.14|| antḥpurṃ samutsṛjya tvāmupaiṣyati rāvaṇḥ|

Translation

रावणः Ravana, स्त्रीसहस्रेण with a thousand wives, समृद्धम् rich, नानारत्नोपशोभितम् decorated with many gems, अन्तःपुरम् inner chambers, समुत्सृज्य abandoning, त्वाम् you, उपैष्यति is desiring.

Meaning

'Ravana is prepared to abandon a thousand wives in his prosperous harem decorated with all kinds of gems in order to accept you.'

SK-23-15-16Sundara Kanda 23.15–16 (युग्मम्)

अन्या तु विकटा नाम राक्षसी वाक्यमब्रवीत्।।5.23.15।। असकृद्देवता युद्धे नागगन्धर्वदानवाः। निर्जिताः समरे येन स ते पार्श्वमुपागतः।।5.23.16।।

anyā tu vikaṭā nāma rākṣasī vākyamabravīt||5.23.15|| asakṛddevatā yuddhe nāgagandharvadānavāḥ| nirjitāḥ samare yena sa te pārśvamupāgatḥ||5.23.16||

Translation

विकटा नाम called Vikata, अन्या other, राक्षसी तु ogress also, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke, येन by whom, असकृत् often, युद्धे in war, देवताः gods, समरे in war, नागगन्धर्वदानवाः nagas, gandharvas and demons, निर्जिताः vanquished, सः he, ते your, पार्श्वम् side, आगतः has come to you.

Meaning

Another ogress called Vikata said, ' Know that he who has often defeated gods in war and has vanquished nagas, gandharvas and demons has come to you (seeking your favour)'.

SK-23-17Sundara Kanda 23.17

तस्य सर्वसमृद्धस्य रावणस्य महात्मनः। किमद्य राक्षसेन्द्रस्य भार्यात्वं नेच्छसेऽधमे।।5.23.17।।

tasya sarvasamṛddhasya rāvaṇasya mahātmanḥ| kimadya rākṣasendrasya bhāryātvṃ necchase'dhame||5.23.17||

Translation

अधमे O foolish woman, सर्वसमृद्धस्य who has abundance of wealth, महात्मनः great self, राक्षसेन्द्रस्य of the lord of ogres, तस्य his, रावणस्य Ravana's, भार्यात्वम् to be wife, अद्य now, किम् why, नेच्छसे do not you desire

Meaning

'O foolish woman why don't you seek the wifehood of a glorious king of demons who has abundance of wealth?'

SK-23-18Sundara Kanda 23.18

ततस्तु दुर्मुखी नाम राक्षसी वाक्यमब्रवीत्। यस्य सूर्यो न तपति भीतो यस्य च मारुतः।।5.23.18।। न वाति स्मायतापाङ्गे किं त्वं तस्य न तिष्ठसि।

tatastu durmukhī nāma rākṣasī vākyamabravīt| yasya sūryo na tapati bhīto yasya ca mārutḥ||5.23.18|| na vāti smāyatāpāṅge kiṃ tvṃ tasya na tiṣṭhasi|

Translation

ततः then, दुर्मुखी नाम named Durmukhi, राक्षसी ogress, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् spoke, आयतापाङ्गे lady of long side glaces, यस्य whose, भीतः by fear of whom, सूर्यः Sun, न तपति not scorch, यस्य by whose, भीतः by fear of whom, मारुतः wind, न वाति स्म not blow, तस्य his, त्वम् you, किम् why, न तिष्ठसि not yield

Meaning

Then an ogress called Durmukhi said, 'O lady of long sideglances why don't you yield to him, afraid of whom the Sun scorches not and strong winds blow not?

SK-23-19Sundara Kanda 23.19

पुष्पवृष्टिं च तरवो मुमुचुर्यस्य वै भयात्।।5.23.19।। शैलाश्च सुभ्रु पानीयं जलदाश्च यदेच्छति। तस्य नैरृतराजस्य राजराजस्य भामिनि ।।5.23.20।। किं त्वं न कुरुषे बुद्धिं भार्यार्थे रावणस्य हि।

puṣpavṛṣṭiṃ ca taravo mumucuryasya vai bhayāt||5.23.19|| śailāśca subhru pānīyṃ jaladāśca yadecchati| tasya nairṛtarājasya rājarājasya bhāmini ||5.23.20|| kiṃ tvṃ na kuruṣe buddhiṃ bhāryārthe rāvaṇasya hi|

Translation

सुभ्रु lady with beautiful eyebrows, भामिनि radiant one, यस्य whose, भयात् fear, तरवः trees, पुष्पवृष्टिम् rain of flowers, मुमुचुः released, यदा whenever, इच्छति wishes, शैलाश्च even mountains, जलदाश्च clouds also, पानीयम् water, नैरृतराजस्य for the king of the southwest, Ravana, राजराजस्य king of kings, तस्य his, रावणस्य Ravana's, भार्यार्थे to become his wife, बुद्धिम् mind accepting, त्वम् you, किम् why, न कुरुषे not wishing?

Meaning

'O lady of beautiful brows why don't you make up your mind to accept the king of kings, afraid of whom the trees rain flowers, the mountains and clouds release water at his will? Ravana is the king of the southwest, direction Why don't you wish to be his wife?
