KK-64-1Kishkindha Kanda 64.1

आख्याता गृध्रराजेन समुत्प्लुत्य प्लवङ्गमाः। सङ्गताः प्रीतिसंयुक्ता विनेदुर्भीमविक्रमाः।।4.64.1।।

ākhyātā gṛdhrarājena samutplutya plavaṅgamāḥ| saṅgatāḥ prītisṃyuktā vinedurbhīmavikramāḥ||4.64.1||

Translation

गृध्रराजेन by the king of vultures, आख्याताः directed, भीमविक्रमा terribly courageous, प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, संगताः assembled, प्रीतिसंयुक्ताः they were pleased, समुत्प्लुत्य leaped, विनेदुः screaming in joy.

Meaning

Hearing the words spoken by the king of vultures, the highly courageous monkeys assembled together and leaped with joyscreaming.

KK-64-2Kishkindha Kanda 64.2

सम्पातेर्वचनं श्रुत्वा हरयो रावणक्षयम्। हृष्टास्सागरमाजग्मुस्सीतादर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः।।4.64.2।।

sampātervacanṃ śrutvā harayo rāvaṇakṣayam| hṛṣṭāssāgaramājagmussītādarśanakāṅkṣiṇḥ||4.64.2||

Translation

हरयः monkeys, सम्पातेः Sampati's, वचनम् words, श्रुत्वा on hearing, हृष्टाः glad, सीतादर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः desiring to see Sita, रावणक्षयम् the abode of Ravana, सागरम् ocean, आजग्मुः reached.

Meaning

On hearing the words of Sampati, the monkeys felt glad and, eager to see Sita, reached the ocean, the passage to the abode of Ravana.

KK-64-3Kishkindha Kanda 64.3

अभिक्रम्य तु तं देशं ददृशुर्भीमविक्रमाः। कृत्स्नं लोकस्य महतः प्रतिबिम्बमिव स्थितम्।।4.64.3।।

abhikramya tu tṃ deśṃ dadṛśurbhīmavikramāḥ| kṛtsnṃ lokasya mahatḥ pratibimbamiva sthitam||4.64.3||

Translation

भीमविक्रमाः those with frigtening courage, तम् that, देशम् place, अभिक्रम्य having reached, महतः of a great, लोकस्य of the world, कृत्स्नम् vast, प्रतिबिम्बमिव like an image, स्थितम् placed, ददृशुः saw.

Meaning

Having reached the ocean, the monkeys, endowed with frightening courage, stood looking at the vast ocean which appeared like an image of the whole world.

KK-64-4Kishkindha Kanda 64.4

दक्षिणस्य समुद्रस्य समासाद्योत्तरां दिशम्। सन्निवेशं ततश्चक्रुर्हरिवीरा महाबलाः।।4.64.4।।

dakṣiṇasya samudrasya samāsādyottarāṃ diśam| sanniveśṃ tataścakrurharivīrā mahābalāḥ||4.64.4||

Translation

महाबलाः powerful, हरिवीराः heroic monkeys, समुद्रस्य ocean's, उत्तरां दिशम् northernside, समासाद्य having reached, ततः then, सन्निवेशम् collected at that, चक्रुः held.

Meaning

Powerful and heroic monkeys assembled at the northern end of the southern ocean.

KK-64-5-7Kishkindha Kanda 64.5–7 (त्रिकम्)

सत्त्वैर्महद्भिर्विकृतैः क्रीडद्भिर्विविधैर्जले। व्यात्तास्यैस्सुमहाकायैरूर्मिभिश्च समाकुलम्।।4.64.5।। प्रसुप्तमिव चान्यत्र क्रीडन्तमिव चान्यतः। क्वचित्पर्वतमात्रैश्च जलराशिभिरावृतम्।।4.64.6।। सङ्कुलं दानवेन्द्रैश्च पातालतलवासिभिः। रोमहर्षकरं दृष्ट्वा विषेदु: कपिकुञ्जराः।।4.64.7।।

sattvairmahadbhirvikṛtaiḥ krīḍadbhirvividhairjale| vyāttāsyaissumahākāyairūrmibhiśca samākulam||4.64.5|| prasuptamiva cānyatra krīḍantamiva cānyatḥ| kvacitparvatamātraiśca jalarāśibhirāvṛtam||4.64.6|| saṅkulṃ dānavendraiśca pātālatalavāsibhiḥ| romaharṣakarṃ dṛṣṭvā viṣedu: kapikuñjarāḥ||4.64.7||

Translation

जले in water, क्रीडद्भिः sporting in water, महद्भि: great ocean, विकृतैः of terrifying form, विविधैः several, सत्त्वै: species, व्यात्तास्यैः by grotesque creatures, सुमहाकायैः of massive body, ऊर्मिभिश्च with waves, समाकुलम् filled with, यत्र there, प्रसुप्तमिव as if sleeping, अन्यतः at other places, क्रीडन्तमिव like sporting, क्वचित् and at some places, पर्वतमात्रैः as high as mountain, जलराशिभिः volumes of water, आवृतम् covered, पातालतलवासिभिः who dwell in the underworld, दानवेन्द्रैश्च also by lords of demons, सङ्कुलम् filled, रोमहर्षकरम् causing horripilation, दृष्ट्वा seeing, कपिकुञ्जराः elephants among monkeys, विषेदुः became worried.

Meaning

The ocean was of terrifying form filled with various violent species of grotesque creatures of huge bodies playing in the water. Full of violent tides, it appeared asleep at one place and apparently sporting in another. In some places it was rising as high as a mountain with huge volumes of water. It was as if roaring with the demon chiefs residing in the underworld. The great monkeys were worried seeing the huge ocean which created horripilation in them.

KK-64-8Kishkindha Kanda 64.8

आकाशमिव दुष्पारं सागरं प्रेक्षय वानराः। विषेदु स्सहसासर्वे कथं कार्यमिति ब्रुवन्।।4.64.8।।

ākāśamiva duṣpārṃ sāgarṃ prekṣaya vānarāḥ| viṣedu ssahasāsarve kathṃ kāryamiti bruvan||4.64.8||

Translation

सहसा at once, सर्वे all, वानराः monkeys, आकाशमिव looking like the sky, दुष्पारम् impossible to cross, सागरम् ocean, प्रेक्षय seeing, विषेदुः worried, कथम् how, कार्यम् the task can be performed, इति thus, ब्रुवन् while saying

Meaning

All the monkeys were worried when they suddenly saw the ocean which looked impassable like the sky. They wondered if they can at all accomplish the task (of finding Sita)

KK-64-9Kishkindha Kanda 64.9

विषण्णां वाहिनीं दृष्ट्वा सागरस्य निरीक्षणात्। आश्वासयामास हरीन्भयार्तान् हरिसत्तमः।।4.64.9।।

viṣaṇṇāṃ vāhinīṃ dṛṣṭvā sāgarasya nirīkṣaṇāt| āśvāsayāmāsa harīnbhayārtān harisattamḥ||4.64.9||

Translation

हरिसत्तमः Angada, the best of the monkeys, सागरस्य ocean's, निरीक्षणात् gazing at, विषण्णाम् despondent, वाहिनीम् army, दृष्ट्वा seeing, भयार्तान् frightened, हरीन् monkeys, आश्वासयामास comforted.

Meaning

Angada, the best among the monkeys saw the worried army despondent gazing at the ocean, and comforted the frightened troops.

KK-64-10Kishkindha Kanda 64.10

तान्विषादेन महता विषण्णान्वानरर्षभान्। उवाच मतिमान्काले वालिसूनुर्महाबलः।।4.64.10।।

tānviṣādena mahatā viṣaṇṇānvānararṣabhān| uvāca matimānkāle vālisūnurmahābalḥ||4.64.10||

Translation

मतिमान् wise, महाबलः strong, वालिसूनुः son of Vali, महता great, विषादेन sorrow, विषण्णान् worried, तान् वानरर्षभान् those bulls among monkeys, काले in time, उवाच said.

Meaning

Angada,the strong and wise son of Vali, spoke thus to the tensed vanaras in the right time:

KK-64-11Kishkindha Kanda 64.11

न विषादे मनः कार्यं विषादो दोषवत्तमः। विषादो हन्ति पुरुषं बालं क्रुद्ध इवोरगः।।4.64.11।।

na viṣāde manḥ kāryṃ viṣādo doṣavattamḥ| viṣādo hanti puruṣṃ bālṃ kruddha ivoragḥ||4.64.11||

Translation

वषादे in despondency, मनः mind, न कार्यम् does not work, विषादः despair, दोषवत्तमाः biggest flaw, क्रुद्धः angry, उरगः serpent, बालम् इव like a child, पुरुषम् man, विषादः despondency, हन्ति destroys.

Meaning

'Do not be despondent. It is the biggest flaw. It destroys a person like an angry serpent killing a young child.

KK-64-12Kishkindha Kanda 64.12

यो विषादं प्रसहते विक्रमे पर्युपस्थिते। तेजसा तस्य हीनस्य पुरुषार्थो न सिध्यति।।4.64.12।।

yo viṣādṃ prasahate vikrame paryupasthite| tejasā tasya hīnasya puruṣārtho na sidhyati||4.64.12||

Translation

विक्रमे when valiance, समुपस्थिते needs to be exhibited, यः whoever, विषादम् despondency, प्रसहते will succumb, तेजसा with brilliant, हीनस्य of a deprived one, तस्य his, पुरुषार्थः manly pursuit, न सिध्यति will not achieve.

Meaning

'If one succumbs to despondency while he has to exhibit his valour, his brilliance gets diminished and he does not succeed in his manly pursuits'.

KK-64-13Kishkindha Kanda 64.13

तस्यां रात्र्यां व्यतीतायामङ्गदो वानरैस्सह। हरिवृद्धैस्समागम्य पुनर्मन्त्रममन्त्रयत्।।4.64.13।।

tasyāṃ rātryāṃ vyatītāyāmaṅgado vānaraissaha| harivṛddhaissamāgamya punarmantramamantrayat||4.64.13||

Translation

तस्याम् when that, रात्रौ night, व्यतीतायाम् having ended, अङ्गदः Angada, हरिवृद्धैः with old monkeys, वानरैस्सह along with fellowmonkeys, समागम्य joined together, पुनः again, मन्त्रम् counsel, अमन्त्रयत् sought.

Meaning

With the night over, Angada joined the older monkeys again and sought their counsel.

KK-64-14Kishkindha Kanda 64.14

सा वानराणां ध्वजिनी परिवार्याङ्गदं बभौ। वासवं परिवार्येव मरुतां वाहिनी स्थिता।।4.64.14।।

sā vānarāṇāṃ dhvajinī parivāryāṅgadṃ babhau| vāsavṃ parivāryeva marutāṃ vāhinī sthitā||4.64.14||

Translation

वानराणाम् of the monkeys, सा that, ध्वजिनी army, अङ्गदम् Angada, परिवार्य surrounding, स्थिता stood, वासवम् Indra, परिवार्य surrounding, मरुताम् of Maruts, वाहिनी इव like the army, बभौ appeared.

Meaning

The army of monkeys encircled Angada like the army of Maruts surrounding Indra.

KK-64-15Kishkindha Kanda 64.15

कोऽन्यस्तां वानरीं सेनां शक्त:स्तम्भयितुं भवेत्। अन्यत्र वालितनयादन्यत्र च हनूमतः।।4.64.15।।

ko'nyastāṃ vānarīṃ senāṃ śakta:stambhayituṃ bhavet| anyatra vālitanayādanyatra ca hanūmatḥ||4.64.15||

Translation

वालितनयात् अन्यत्र other than Vali's son, हनूमतः Hanumat, अन्यत्र other than, अन्यः another person, कः who, ताम् that, वानरीम् monkey सेनाम् army, स्तम्भयितुम् to suspend, शक्तः can do, भवेत् will be.

Meaning

Who else other than the son of Vali and Hanuman can resist and pacify the monkeyarmy?

KK-64-16Kishkindha Kanda 64.16

ततस्तान्हरिवृद्धांश्च तच्च सैन्यमरिन्दमः। अनुमान्याङ्गदश्श्रीमान्वाक्यमर्थवदब्रवीत्।।4.64.16।।

tatastānharivṛddhāṃśca tacca sainyamarindamḥ| anumānyāṅgadaśśrīmānvākyamarthavadabravīt||4.64.16||

Translation

ततः then, अरिन्दमः subduer of foes, श्रीमान् illustrious, अङ्गदः Angada, तान् those, हरिवृद्धान् elderly monkeys, तत् that, सैन्यं च and the army also, अनुमान्य taking them into confidence, अर्थवत् meaningful, वाक्यम् words, अब्रवीत् expressed.

Meaning

Then the illustrious Angada, subduer of foes took the counsel of elderly monkeys and the army into confidence and thus addressed them all in meaningful words:

KK-64-17Kishkindha Kanda 64.17

क इदानीं महातेजा लङ्घयिष्यति सागरम्। कः करिष्यति सुग्रीवं सत्यसन्धमरिन्दमम्।।4.64.17।।

ka idānīṃ mahātejā laṅghayiṣyati sāgaram| kḥ kariṣyati sugrīvṃ satyasandhamarindamam||4.64.17||

Translation

इदानीम् now, महातेजाः brilliant, कः who, सागरम् ocean, लङ्घयिष्यति will cross, कः who, अरिंदमम् subduer of foes, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, सत्यसन्धम् true to his promise, करिष्यति will render.

Meaning

'Now which mighty monkey will cross the ocean? Who will prove Sugriva, subduer of enemies, true to his promise?

KK-64-18Kishkindha Kanda 64.18

को वीरो योजनशतं लङ्घयेत प्लवङ्गमाः। इमांश्च यूथपान् सर्वान्मोक्षयेत्को महाभयात्।।4.64.18।।

ko vīro yojanaśatṃ laṅghayeta plavaṅgamāḥ| imāṃśca yūthapān sarvānmokṣayetko mahābhayāt||4.64.18||

Translation

वीरः hero, कः who, प्लवङ्गमा: O monkeys, योजनशतम् a hundred yojanas, लङ्घयेत can leap, इमान् these, यूथपान् leaders, सर्वान् all, महाभयात् from great fear, मोक्षयेत liberate them.

Meaning

'O monkeys which one can leap a hundred yojanas and liberate the monkey leaders from the great fear of Sugriva?

KK-64-19Kishkindha Kanda 64.19

कस्य प्रभावाद्धारांश्च पुत्रांश्चैव गृहाणि च। इतो निवृत्ताः पश्येम सिद्धार्थास्सुखिनो वयम्।।4.64.19।।

kasya prabhāvāddhārāṃśca putrāṃścaiva gṛhāṇi ca| ito nivṛttāḥ paśyema siddhārthāssukhino vayam||4.64.19||

Translation

वयम् we,कस्य whose, प्रभावात् effort,सिद्धार्थाः emerge successful,सुखिनः happy,इतः from here, निवृत्ताः return,दारांश्च wives,पुत्रांश्चैव and sons, गृहाणि च and homes,पश्येम we will see.

Meaning

'By whose effort can we be successful and return home happily from here to meet wives and sons?

KK-64-20Kishkindha Kanda 64.20

कस्य प्रसादाद्रामं च लक्ष्मणं च महाबलम्। अभिगच्छेम संहृष्टास्सुग्रीवं च वनौकसम्।।4.64.20।।

kasya prasādādrāmṃ ca lakṣmaṇṃ ca mahābalam| abhigacchema sṃhṛṣṭāssugrīvṃ ca vanaukasam||4.64.20||

Translation

कस्य whose, प्रसादात् grace, संहृष्टा: happily, रामं च Rama and, महाबलम् mighty, लक्ष्मणं च Lakshmana also, वनौकसम् forester, सुग्रीवं च even Sugriva, अभिगच्छेम can we approach.

Meaning

'By whose grace shall we approach Rama and Lakshmana and even the monkey king Sugriva happily?

KK-64-21Kishkindha Kanda 64.21

यदि कश्चित्समर्थो वस्सागरप्लवने हरिः। स ददा त्विह न शशीघ्रं पुण्यामभयदक्षिणाम्।।4.64.21।।

yadi kaścitsamartho vassāgaraplavane hariḥ| sa dadā tviha na śaśīghrṃ puṇyāmabhayadakṣiṇām||4.64.21||

Translation

वः among you, कश्चित् any one, हरिः vanara, सागरप्लवने in leaping the ocean, समर्थः यदि if he is capable, सः he, इह here, नः to us, शीघ्रम् quickly, पुण्याम् sacred, अभयदक्षिणाम् a gift of assurance, ददातु can he give?

Meaning

'If there is any one among you who is capable of leaping across the ocean he will be giving all of us the sacred gift of life quickly?'

KK-64-22Kishkindha Kanda 64.22

अङ्गदस्य वच श्शृत्वा न कश्चित् किञ्चिदब्रवीत्। स्तिमिते वा भवत्सर्वा सा तत्र हरिवाहिनी।।4.64.22।।

aṅgadasya vaca śśṛtvā na kaścit kiñcidabravīt| stimite vā bhavatsarvā sā tatra harivāhinī||4.64.22||

Translation

अङ्गदस्य Angada's, वचः words, श्रुत्वा hearing, कश्चित् any one, किञ्चित् even a little, न अब्रवीत् did not speak, तत्र there, सर्वा the entire, सा that, हरिवाहिनी army of monkeys स्तिमिते motionless, अभवत् became.

Meaning

After hearing Angada, no one spoke a word. The entire army of monkeys became still and motionless.

KK-64-23Kishkindha Kanda 64.23

पुनरेवाङ्गदः प्राह तान्हरीन्हरिसत्तमः। सर्वे बलवतां श्रेष्ठा भवन्तो दृढविक्रमाः।।4.64.23।। व्यपदेश्य कुले जाताः पूजिताश्चाप्यभीक्ष्णशः।

punarevāṅgadḥ prāha tānharīnharisattamḥ| sarve balavatāṃ śreṣṭhā bhavanto dṛḍhavikramāḥ||4.64.23|| vyapadeśya kule jātāḥ pūjitāścāpyabhīkṣṇaśḥ|

Translation

हरिसत्तमः best of monkeys, अङ्गदः Angada, तान् हरीन् those monkeys, पुनरेव once again, प्राह addressed, भवन्तः you are, सर्वे all, बलवताम् among strong, श्रेष्ठाः eminent, दृढविक्रमाः mighty, व्यपदेशकुले in a renowned family, जाताः born, अभीक्ष्णशः again and again, पूजिताश्च honoured.

Meaning

Angada, the best of the monkeys again addressed them saying, 'you are all mighty, eminent and courageous, born in renowned families and have been honoured again and again(for your actions).

KK-64-24Kishkindha Kanda 64.24

न हि वो गमने सङ्गः कदाचित्कस्यचित्क्वचित्। ब्रुवध्वं यस्य या शक्तिः प्लवने प्लवगर्षभाः।।4.64.24।।

na hi vo gamane saṅgḥ kadācitkasyacitkvacit| bruvadhvṃ yasya yā śaktiḥ plavane plavagarṣabhāḥ||4.64.24||

Translation

वः to you, कस्यचित् any one of you, कदाचित् at any time, गमने fly, सङ्गः no obstruction, क्वचित् हि to carry out, प्लवगर्षभाः bulls among monkeys, प्लवने in leaping, यस्य whose, या such, शक्तिः capacity, ब्रुवध्वम् speak .

Meaning

'None of you at any time have faced any obstruction in doing your deeds. You are efficient in leaping. O bulls among monkeys now speak out, who among you can fly and how far? इत्यार्षे श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे चतुष्षष्टितमस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the sixtyfourth sarga in Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
