KK-42-1Kishkindha Kanda 42.1

अथ प्रस्थाप्य सुग्रीवस्तान्हरीन्दक्षिणां दिशम्। अब्रवीन्मेघसङ्काशं सुषेणं नाम यूथपम्।।4.42.1।।

atha prasthāpya sugrīvastānharīndakṣiṇāṃ diśam| abravīnmeghasaṅkāśṃ suṣeṇṃ nāma yūthapam||4.42.1||

Translation

सुग्रीवः Sugriva, तान् them, हरीन् monkeys, दक्षिणां दिशम् in the southernquarter, प्रस्थाप्य having sent, अथ now, मेघसङ्काशम् resembling a cloud, सुषेणं नाम known as Sushena, यूथपम् troop leader, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

After sending the monkeys in the southern direction, Sugriva said to the cloudlike troop leader called Sushena.

KK-42-2Kishkindha Kanda 42.2

तारायाः पितरं राजा श्वशुरं भीमविक्रमम्। अब्रवीत्प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमभिगम्य प्रणम्य च।।4.42.2।।

tārāyāḥ pitarṃ rājā śvaśurṃ bhīmavikramam| abravītprāñjalirvākyamabhigamya praṇamya ca||4.42.2||

Translation

राजा king, तारायाः Tara's, पितरम् father, श्वशुरम् his fatherinlaw, भीमविक्रमम् a hero of terrifying valour, अभिगम्य having gone, प्राञ्जलिः with folded palms, प्रणम्य च having offered salutation, वाक्यम् these words, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

King (Sugriva) went with folded hands to Tara's father, his fatherinlaw, of terrifying valour, offered salutation and said:

KK-42-3-4Kishkindha Kanda 42.3–4 (युग्मम्)

मरीचिपुत्रं मारीचमर्चिष्मन्तं महाकपिम्। वृतं कपिवरै श्शूरैर्महेन्द्रसदृशद्युतिम्।।4.42.3।। बुद्धिविक्रमसम्पन्नं वैनतेयसमद्युतिम्। मरीचिपुत्रान्मारीचानर्चिर्मालान्महाबलान्।।4.42.4।। ऋषिपुत्रांश्चतांत्सर्वान्प्रतीचीमादिशद्दिशम्।

marīciputrṃ mārīcamarciṣmantṃ mahākapim| vṛtṃ kapivarai śśūrairmahendrasadṛśadyutim||4.42.3|| buddhivikramasampannṃ vainateyasamadyutim| marīciputrānmārīcānarcirmālānmahābalān||4.42.4|| ṛṣiputrāṃścatāṃtsarvānpratīcīmādiśaddiśam|

Translation

मरीचिपुत्रम् son of Marichi, मारीचम् Maricha, महाकपिम् great monkey, शूरैः with brave ones, कपिवरैः with best monkeys, वृतम् surounded, महेन्द्रसदृशद्युतिम् glowing like Mahendra, बुद्धिविक्रमसम्पन्नम् with wisdom and bravery, वैनतेयसमद्युतिम् equal to Garuda in lustre, अर्चिष्मन्तम् a person filled with lustre, मरीचिपुत्रान् sons of Maricha, अर्चिर्मालान् Archirmala's, महाबलान् valiant ones, ऋषिपुत्रांश्च sons of sages, सर्वान् all, मारीचान् Maricha's, प्रतीचीं दिशम् to western quarter, आदिशत् instructed.

Meaning

Sugriva spoke to the great lustrous monkey Archisman, son of the eminent sage Marichi who possessed the wisdom and prowess of Indra and was comparable to Vaineteya (Garuda) in lustre. He also spoke to the other sons of Maricha, called Marichas, who were very strong and known as Archismalas (garlands of continuous glow) and asked all of them to proceed in the western direction.

KK-42-5Kishkindha Kanda 42.5

द्वाभ्यां शतसहस्राभ्यां कपीनां कपिसत्तमाः।।4.42.5।। सुषेणप्रमुखा यूयं वैदेहीं परिमार्गतः।

dvābhyāṃ śatasahasrābhyāṃ kapīnāṃ kapisattamāḥ||4.42.5|| suṣeṇapramukhā yūyṃ vaidehīṃ parimārgatḥ|

Translation

कपिसत्तमाः foremost of monkeys, यूयम् you, सुषेण प्रमुखाः having Sushena as leader, कपीनाम् among monkeys, द्वाभ्याम् with two, शतसहस्राभ्याम् hundred thousands, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, परिमार्गत: search.

Meaning

'O foremost of monkeys with Sushena as your group leader accompanied by two hundred thousand vanaras, go and search for Vaidehi.

KK-42-6-7Kishkindha Kanda 42.6–7 (युग्मम्)

सुराष्ट्रान्सहबाह्लीकान् श्चन्द्रचित्रांस्तथैव च।।4.42.6।। स्फीताञ्जनपदान्रम्यान्विपुलानि पुराणि च। पुन्नागगहनं कुक्षिं वकुलोद्दालकाकुलम्।।4.42.7।। तथा केतकषण्डांश्च मार्गध्वं हरियूथपाः।

surāṣṭrānsahabāhlīkān ścandracitrāṃstathaiva ca||4.42.6|| sphītāñjanapadānramyānvipulāni purāṇi ca| punnāgagahanṃ kukṣiṃ vakuloddālakākulam||4.42.7|| tathā ketakaṣaṇḍāṃśca mārgadhvṃ hariyūthapāḥ|

Translation

हरियूथपाः leaders of monkeys, सौराष्ट्रान् in the country of Saurashtra, तथैव च and similarly, सहबाह्लीकान् even in Bahlika, श्चन्द्रचित्रां in chandrachitra, स्फीतान् prosperous, रम्यान् delightful, जनपदान् villages, विपुलानि vast, पुराणि च towns, पुन्नागगहनम् punnaga grove, वकुलोद्दालकाकुलम् haphazard distribution of punnaga, bakula and uddalaka trees, कुक्षिम् in kukshi, तथा similarly, केतकखण्डांश्च in Kethaka shrubs, मार्गध्वम् search.

Meaning

'O leaders of monkeys search for Sita in the countries of Saurashtra, and also Bahlika, Chandrachitra, in delightful villages and vast towns, also in Kukshi covered haphazardly with punnaga, bakula and uddalaka trees as well as ketaka shrubs.

KK-42-8-10Kishkindha Kanda 42.8–10 (त्रिकम्)

प्रत्यक्स्रोतोगमाश्चैव नद्यश्शीतजलाश्शिवाः।।4.42.8।। तापसानामरण्यानि कान्तारा गिरयश्च ये। तत्रस्थलीं मरुप्रायामत्युच्चशिरसश्शिलाः।।4.42.9।। गिरिजालावृतां दुर्गां मार्गित्वा पश्चिमां दिशम्। ततः पश्चिममासाद्य समुद्रं द्रष्टुमर्हथ।।4.42.10।। तिमिनक्रायुतजलमक्षोभ्यमथ वानराः।

pratyaksrotogamāścaiva nadyaśśītajalāśśivāḥ||4.42.8|| tāpasānāmaraṇyāni kāntārā girayaśca ye| tatrasthalīṃ maruprāyāmatyuccaśirasaśśilāḥ||4.42.9|| girijālāvṛtāṃ durgāṃ mārgitvā paścimāṃ diśam| tatḥ paścimamāsādya samudrṃ draṣṭumarhatha||4.42.10|| timinakrāyutajalamakṣobhyamatha vānarāḥ|

Translation

वानराः O monkeys, प्रत्यक्स्रोतोगमाः those flowing to the west, शीतजलाः cool waters, शिवाः sacred, नद्यश्चैव rivers too, तापसानां in hermits, अरण्यानि woods, ये those, कान्तारा: गिरयश्च forests and mountains, तत्र there, मरुप्रायाः dry, स्थलीं lands, अत्युच्चशिरसाः high peaks, शिलाःmountains, गिरिजालावृताम् surrounded by mountain ranges, दुर्गाम् inaccessible, दिशम् direction, मार्गित्वा after searching, पश्चिमां western side, ततः then, समुद्रम् the sea, पश्चिमम् the western, आसाद्य after reaching, द्रष्टुम् to see, अर्हथ it is proper for you, तिमिनक्रायुतजलम् water infested with whales and alligators, अक्षोभ्यम् which cannot be agitated, अथ then, वानराः monkeys.

Meaning

'O monkeys the auspicious rivers with cool waters flow towards the western region. Search in the groves inhabited by ascetics, other forests, mountains, cliffs, in the desertland. Search in the inaccessible western region surrounded by mountains. Then proceed to the western ocean infested with whales and alligators, which cannot be easily disturbed.

KK-42-11Kishkindha Kanda 42.11

ततः केतकषण्डेषु तमालगहनेषु च।।4.42.11।। कपयो विहरिष्यन्ति नारिकेलवनेषु च।

tatḥ ketakaṣaṇḍeṣu tamālagahaneṣu ca||4.42.11|| kapayo vihariṣyanti nārikelavaneṣu ca|

Translation

ततः then, कपयः monkeys, केतकषण्डेषु in the ketaka shrubs, तमालगहनेषु च in the thickets of tamala trees, नारिकेलवनेषु च and in coconut groves, विहरिष्यन्ति roam.

Meaning

'There the monkeys may roam about the Ketaka shrubs, tamala thickets and coconut groves.

KK-42-12-14Kishkindha Kanda 42.12–14 (त्रिकम्)

तत्र सीतां च मार्गध्वं निलयं रावणस्य च।।4.42.12।। वेलातलनिविष्टेषु पर्वतेषु वनेषु च। मुरचीपत्तनं चैव रम्यं चैव जटीपुरम्।।4.42.13।। अवन्तीमङ्गलोपां च तथा चालक्षितं वनम्। राष्ट्राणि च विशालानि पत्तनानि ततस्ततः।।4.42.14।।

tatra sītāṃ ca mārgadhvṃ nilayṃ rāvaṇasya ca||4.42.12|| velātalaniviṣṭeṣu parvateṣu vaneṣu ca| muracīpattanṃ caiva ramyṃ caiva jaṭīpuram||4.42.13|| avantīmaṅgalopāṃ ca tathā cālakṣitṃ vanam| rāṣṭrāṇi ca viśālāni pattanāni tatastatḥ||4.42.14||

Translation

तत्र there,वेलातलनिविष्टेषु among those on the sea shore tract, पर्वतेषु in mountains, वनेषु in groves, सीतां च Sita's, रावणस्य Ravana's, निलयं च residence, मार्गध्वम् search, मुरचीपत्तनं चैव town of Murachi, रम्यम् beautiful, जटपुरं चैव and in the city of Jata, अवन्तीम् in Avanti, अङ्गलोपां च in Angalopa city, तथा so also, अलक्षितम् unnoticed, वनम् forest, ततस्ततः here and there, राष्ट्रणिच kingdoms, विशालानि vast, पत्तनानि towns

Meaning

'Look for Sita as well as the residence of Ravana.You should find the whereabouts of Sita in the mountains and forests located on the sea shore. Search in the city of Murachi, beautiful city of Jata, Avanti, Angalopa and in the unnoticed forestland. Look for her in the vast kingdoms and cities all over.

KK-42-15Kishkindha Kanda 42.15

सिन्धुसागरयोश्चैव सङ्गमे तत्र पर्वतः। महान्हेमगिरिर्नाम शतशृङ्गो महाद्रुमः।।4.42.15।।

sindhusāgarayoścaiva saṅgame tatra parvatḥ| mahānhemagirirnāma śataśṛṅgo mahādrumḥ||4.42.15||

Translation

सिन्धुसागरयोः of sindhu and the sea, सङ्गमे at the confluence, तत्र there, हेमगिरिर्नाम known as Hemagiri, शतशृङ्गःof hundred peaks, महाद्रुमःgreat trees, पर्वतःmountain,

Meaning

'There is a lofty mountain with a hundred peaks and great trees at the confluence of river Sindhu and the sea. It is known as Hemagiri (golden mountain).

KK-42-16Kishkindha Kanda 42.16

तस्य प्रस्थेषु रम्येषु सिंहाः पक्षगमाः स्थिताः। तिमिमत्स्यगजांश्चैव नीडान्यारोपयन्ति ते।।4.42.16।।

tasya prastheṣu ramyeṣu siṃhāḥ pakṣagamāḥ sthitāḥ| timimatsyagajāṃścaiva nīḍānyāropayanti te||4.42.16||

Translation

तस्य its, रम्येषु beautiful, प्रस्थेषु slopes, पक्षगमाः with wings, सिंहाः lions, स्थिताः are sheltered, ते they, तिमिमत्स्यगजांश्चैव whales fishes and elephants from the sea, नीडानि in their shelters (caves), आरोपयन्ति place

Meaning

'On the slopes of that mountain you will find lions called Pakshagamas, that is lions with wings. They carry the whales, fishes and elephants from the sea to their shelters on the beautiful mountain slopes.

KK-42-17Kishkindha Kanda 42.17

तानि नीडानि सिंहानां गिरिशृङ्गगताश्च ये। दृप्तास्तृप्ताश्च मातङ्गास्तोयदस्वननिस्वनाः।।4.42.17।। विचरन्ति विशालेऽस्मिंस्तोयपूर्णे समन्ततः।

tāni nīḍāni siṃhānāṃ giriśṛṅgagatāśca ye| dṛptāstṛptāśca mātaṅgāstoyadasvananisvanāḥ||4.42.17|| vicaranti viśāle'smiṃstoyapūrṇe samantatḥ|

Translation

गिरिशृङ्गगताः roaming on the slopes, तोयदस्वननिस्वनाः sounding like thundering clouds, दृप्ताः proud, तृप्ताश्च satisfied, ये those, मातङ्गाः elephants, समन्ततः everywhere, तोयपूर्णे filled with water, अस्मिन् they, विशाले broad, सिंहानाम् lions', नीडानि in the dens, विचरन्ति roam about

Meaning

'The proud elephants wandering on the mountain slopes, and on the vast tract filled with water would be happy trumpeting like thundering clouds. They roam in the caves of lions.

KK-42-18Kishkindha Kanda 42.18

तस्य शृङ्गं दिवस्पर्शं काञ्चनं चित्रपादपम्।।4.42.18।। सर्वमाशु विचेतव्यं कपिभिः कामरूपिभिः।

tasya śṛṅgṃ divasparśṃ kāñcanṃ citrapādapam||4.42.18|| sarvamāśu vicetavyṃ kapibhiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ|

Translation

तस्य दिवस्पर्शम् touching the sky, चित्रपादपम् colourful trees, काञ्चनम् golden, शृङ्गम् peak, सर्वम् all, कामरूपिभिः by those who can assume any form, कपिभिः by monkeys, आशु at once , विचेतव्यम् look for carefully

Meaning

'The monkeys capable of assuming any form at their will should search the scraping peaks of the golden mountain (Himagiri) with colourful trees without delay.

KK-42-19Kishkindha Kanda 42.19

कोटिं तत्र समुद्रे तु काञ्चनीं शतयोजनाम्।।4.42.19।। दुर्दर्शां पारियात्रस्य गतां द्रक्ष्यथ वानराः।

koṭiṃ tatra samudre tu kāñcanīṃ śatayojanām||4.42.19|| durdarśāṃ pāriyātrasya gatāṃ drakṣyatha vānarāḥ|

Translation

वानराः monkeys, तत्र there, गतां on reaching, समुद्रे तु in the end of the sea, पारियात्रस्य of Pariyatra, शतयोजनाम् hundred yojanas, काञ्चनीम् golden, दुर्दर्शाम् difficult to see (because of its brilliance), कोटिम् tip, द्रक्ष्यथ you will see

Meaning

'O monkeys you will see the dazzling golden tip of a mountain called Pariyatra towards the end of the sea. It is extended over a hundred yojanas and dificult to gaze because of its brilliance.

KK-42-20Kishkindha Kanda 42.20

कोट्यस्तत्र चतुर्विंशद्गन्धर्वाणां तपस्विनाम्।।4.42.20।। वसन्त्यग्निनिकाशानां घोराणां कामरूपिणाम्।

koṭyastatra caturviṃśadgandharvāṇāṃ tapasvinām||4.42.20|| vasantyagninikāśānāṃ ghorāṇāṃ kāmarūpiṇām|

Translation

तत्र there, तपस्विनाम् of seers, अग्निनिकाशानाम् blazing like fire, घोराणाम् terrific, कामरूपिणाम् who can assume any form, गन्धर्वाणाम् of gandharvas, चतुर्विंशत् twentyfour, कोट्यःcrores, वसन्ति reside

Meaning

'There dwell twentyfour crore of terrific gandharvas blazing like fire who can assume any form.They lead an ascetic life.

KK-42-21Kishkindha Kanda 42.21

पावकार्चिः प्रतीकाशास्समवेतास्सहस्रशः।।4.42.21।। नात्यासादयितव्यास्ते वानरैर्भीमविक्रमैः।

pāvakārciḥ pratīkāśāssamavetāssahasraśḥ||4.42.21|| nātyāsādayitavyāste vānarairbhīmavikramaiḥ|

Translation

सहस्रशः in thousands, समवेताः assembled together, प्रतीकाशाः appearing like, ते you, भीमविक्रमैः with very brave ones, वानरैः by monkeys, नात्यासादयितव्याः not to go very close to them, पावकार्चिःwith fire likeglow

Meaning

'Collected together in thousands, and radiating like fire, they live there. Even the very brave vanaras should not go close to them.

KK-42-22-23Kishkindha Kanda 42.22–23 (युग्मम्)

नादेयं च फलं तस्माद्देशात्किञ्चित् प्लवङ्गमैः।।4.42.22।। दुरासदा हि ते वीरा स्सत्त्ववन्तो महाबलाः। फलमूलानि ते तत्र रक्षन्ते भीमविक्रमाः।।4.42.23।।

nādeyṃ ca phalṃ tasmāddeśātkiñcit plavaṅgamaiḥ||4.42.22|| durāsadā hi te vīrā ssattvavanto mahābalāḥ| phalamūlāni te tatra rakṣante bhīmavikramāḥ||4.42.23||

Translation

तस्मात् देशात् from that country, प्लवङ्गमैः by monkeys, फलम् fruits, किञ्चित् a little, नादेयम् should not be taken, सत्त्ववन्तः courageous, महाबलाः strong, ते वीराः those heroes, दुरासदाः हि difficult to go there, भीमविक्रमाः heroes of frightening bravery, ते they, तत्र there, फलमूलानि fruits and roots, रक्षन्ते keep protecting

Meaning

'You should not pluck any fruits from those woods, for courageous gandharvas protect the fruits of the trees. It is difficult to go there, for those heroes have frightening bravery.

KK-42-24Kishkindha Kanda 42.24

तत्र यत्नश्च कर्तव्यो मार्गितव्या च जानकी। न हि तेभ्यो भयं किञ्चित्कपित्वमनुवर्तताम्।।4.42.24।।

tatra yatnaśca kartavyo mārgitavyā ca jānakī| na hi tebhyo bhayṃ kiñcitkapitvamanuvartatām||4.42.24||

Translation

तत्र there, यत्नश्च effort, कर्तव्यः should put in, जानकी Janaki, मार्गितव्या च and search, कपित्वम् monkeyish nature, अनुवर्तताम् follow, तेभ्यः from them, भयम् fear, किञ्चित् a little, न हि not there

Meaning

'Exert yourself in your search for Janaki. Indeed there will be no fear from them, if you behave like normal monkeys in a natural way.

KK-42-25-26Kishkindha Kanda 42.25–26 (युग्मम्)

तत्र वैढूर्यवर्णाभो वज्रसंस्थानसंस्थितः। नानाद्रुमलताकीर्णो वज्रो नाम महागिरिः।।4.42.25।। श्रीमान्समुदितस्तत्र योजनानां शतं समम्। गुहास्तत्र विचेतव्या प्रयत्नेन प्लवङ्गमाः ।।4.42.26।।

tatra vaiḍhūryavarṇābho vajrasṃsthānasṃsthitḥ| nānādrumalatākīrṇo vajro nāma mahāgiriḥ||4.42.25|| śrīmānsamuditastatra yojanānāṃ śatṃ samam| guhāstatra vicetavyā prayatnena plavaṅgamāḥ ||4.42.26||

Translation

प्लवङ्गमाः O monkeys, तत्र there, वैढूर्यवर्णाभः of the colour of Vaidurya, वज्रसंस्थानसंस्थितः strong as a diamond, नानाद्रुमलताकीर्णः with different trees and vines, श्रीमान् glorious, वज्रोनाम named Vajra, महागिरि: great mountain, तत्र there, योजनानां शतम् of hundred yojanas, समम् even, समुदितः extended, तत्र there, गुहाः cave, प्रयत्नेन with great effort, विचेतव्याः you may look for

Meaning

'(Beyond) there is a glorious mountain called Vajra of the colour of Vaidurya, hard as a diamond with different kinds of trees and vines.The mountain extends evenly to a stretch of a hundred yojanas.There are caves in the mountain where you may look for her with due effort.

KK-42-27Kishkindha Kanda 42.27

चतुर्भागे समुद्रस्य चक्रवान्नाम पर्वतः। तत्र चक्रं सहस्रारं निर्मितं विश्वकर्मणा।।4.42.27।।

caturbhāge samudrasya cakravānnāma parvatḥ| tatra cakrṃ sahasrārṃ nirmitṃ viśvakarmaṇā||4.42.27||

Translation

समुद्रस्य of the sea, चतुर्भागे in the one fourth part, चक्रवान् नाम Chakravan, पर्वतः mountain, तत्र there, विश्वकर्मणा by Visvakarma, सहस्रारम् thousand spiked, चक्रम् wheel, निर्मितम् constructed

Meaning

'Then move to the fourth part (of the western sea) where you will see a mountain called Chakravan occupying a quarter part of the sea.You will find there a thousandspiked wheel built by Visvakarma.

KK-42-28Kishkindha Kanda 42.28

तत्र पञ्चजनं हत्वा हयग्रीवं च दानवम्। आजहार ततश्चक्रं शङ्खं च पुरुषोत्तमः।।4.42.28।।

tatra pañcajanṃ hatvā hayagrīvṃ ca dānavam| ājahāra tataścakrṃ śaṅkhṃ ca puruṣottamḥ||4.42.28||

Translation

तत्र there, पुरुषोत्तमः supreme Lord Visnu, हयग्रीवम् Hayagriva , दानवम् demon, हत्वा having killed, ततः then, चक्रम् discus, पञ्चजनम् Panchajanam, शङ्खं च conch, आजहार brought

Meaning

'It was there that the Supreme Lord Visnu, having slain Hayagriva and Panchajanam, recovered the discus and conch for himself.

KK-42-29Kishkindha Kanda 42.29

तस्य सानुषु चित्रेषु विशालासु गुहासु च। रावण स्सह वैदेह्या मार्गितव्यस्तत स्ततः।।4.42.29।।

tasya sānuṣu citreṣu viśālāsu guhāsu ca| rāvaṇa ssaha vaidehyā mārgitavyastata statḥ||4.42.29||

Translation

तस्य its, चित्रेषु in colourful ones, सानुषु on the slopes, विशालासु in wide places, गुहासु च in the caves, रावणः Ravana, वैदेह्या सहा with Vaidehi, ततस्ततः here and there, मार्गितव्यः search for

Meaning

'Look for Vaidehi and Ravana in the wide caves and colourful slopes of the (Chakravan) mountain.

KK-42-30Kishkindha Kanda 42.30

योजनानां चतुष्षष्टिर्वराहो नाम पर्वतः। सुवर्णशृङ्गस्सुश्रीमा नगाधे वरुणालये।।4.42.30।।

yojanānāṃ catuṣṣaṣṭirvarāho nāma parvatḥ| suvarṇaśṛṅgassuśrīmā nagādhe varuṇālaye||4.42.30||

Translation

अगाधे in the deep, वरुणालये in the sea,चतु:ष्षष्टिः sixtyfour, योजनानां of yojanas, सुवर्णशृङ्गः golden peaked, वराहो नाम called Varaha, पर्वतः mountain सु श्रीमान् illustrious

Meaning

'Plunge deep down into the sea and you will see a goldenpeaked mountain called Varaha, the residence of Varuna.It is extended over sixty four yojanas in the sea.

KK-42-31Kishkindha Kanda 42.31

तत्र प्राग्ज्योतिषं नाम जातरूपमयं पुरम्। यस्मिन्वसति दुष्टात्मा नरको नाम दानवः।।4.42.31।।

tatra prāgjyotiṣṃ nāma jātarūpamayṃ puram| yasminvasati duṣṭātmā narako nāma dānavḥ||4.42.31||

Translation

तं गजाश्च वराहाश्च सिंह व्याघ्राश्च सर्वतः। अभिगर्जन्ति सततं तेन शब्देन दर्पिताः।।4.42.34।।

tṃ gajāśca varāhāśca siṃha vyāghrāśca sarvatḥ| abhigarjanti satatṃ tena śabdena darpitāḥ||4.42.34||

'On crossing the hill ruled by Indra you will reach the rows of sixty thousand mountains of gold shining like the brilliance of the rising Sun. The mountains glow with golden trees filled with bloom.

KK-42-38Kishkindha Kanda 42.38

तेषां मध्ये स्थितो राजा मेरुरुत्तरपर्वतः। आदित्येन प्रसन्नेन शैलो दत्तवरः पुरा।।4.42.38।।

'In the midst of the sixty thousand hills stands Meru, King of mountains. It is the northern mountain, blessed by the Sungod with a boon in the past.

KK-42-39-40Kishkindha Kanda 42.39–40 (युग्मम्)

तेनैव मुक्तश्शैलेन्द्रस्सर्व एव त्वदाश्रयाः। मत्प्रसादाद्भविष्यन्ति दिवा रात्रं च काञ्चनाः।।4.42.39।। त्वयि ये चापि वत्स्यन्ति देवगन्धर्वदानवाः। ते भविष्यन्ति रक्ताश्च प्रभया काञ्चनप्रभाः।।4.42.40।।

tenaiva muktaśśailendrassarva eva tvadāśrayāḥ| matprasādādbhaviṣyanti divā rātrṃ ca kāñcanāḥ||4.42.39|| tvayi ye cāpi vatsyanti devagandharvadānavāḥ| te bhaviṣyanti raktāśca prabhayā kāñcanaprabhāḥ||4.42.40||

शैलेन्द्रःking of mountains, तेन by him, एवम् in that way, उक्तः has been told, त्वदाश्रयाःthose who shelter there, एव only, दिवा day, रात्रं च and night, मत्प्रसादात् by my grace, काञ्चनाः golden, भविष्यन्ति will be, ये those, वत्स्यन्ति reside, ते चापि they also, प्रभया with radiance, रक्ताश्च like red colour, काञ्चनप्रभाः have golden radiance, भविष्यन्ति will be, देवगन्धर्वदानवाः gods, gandharvas and demons

'The Sungod said to mount Meru, 'By my grace all the trees and hillocks of this king of mountains will shine in golden red, the gods, gandharvas and demons who dwell here will have golden radiance '.

KK-42-41-42Kishkindha Kanda 42.41–42 (युग्मम्)

विश्वे देवाश्च मरूतो वसवश्च दिवौकसः। आगम्य पश्चिमां सन्ध्यां मेरुमुत्तमपर्वतम्।।4.42.41।। आदित्यमुपतिष्ठन्ति तैश्च सूर्योऽभिपूजितः। अदृश्यस्सर्वभूतानामस्तं गच्छतिपर्वतम्।।4.42.42।।

viśve devāśca marūto vasavaśca divaukasḥ| āgamya paścimāṃ sandhyāṃ merumuttamaparvatam||4.42.41|| ādityamupatiṣṭhanti taiśca sūryo'bhipūjitḥ| adṛśyassarvabhūtānāmastṃ gacchatiparvatam||4.42.42||

विश्वेदेवाश्च Visvadevas, वसवः Vasus, मरुतश्च Maruts दिवौकसः gods, पश्चिमां सन्ध्याम् in the evening twilight, उत्तमपर्वतम् king of mountains,मेरुम् Meru, आगम्य after coming over, आदित्यम् Sun, उपतिष्ठन्ति they serve, सूर्यः Sun, तैः by them, अभिपूजितः worshipped, सर्वभूतानाम् for all beings, अदृश्यः unseen, अस्तं पर्वतम् to the western mountain behind which the sun sets, गच्छति goes

Meaning

The Visvadevas, Vasus, Maruts, and the gods reach Meru, this great king of mountains, in the evening twilight. Worshipped by them, the Sungod sets behind the mountain and becomes invisible to all beings.

KK-42-43Kishkindha Kanda 42.43

योजनानां सहस्राणि दश तानि दिवाकरः। मुहूर्तार्धेन तं शीघ्रमभियाति शिलोच्चयम्।।4.42.43।।

yojanānāṃ sahasrāṇi daśa tāni divākarḥ| muhūrtārdhena tṃ śīghramabhiyāti śiloccayam||4.42.43||

Translation

दिवाकरः Sun, मुहूर्तर्धेन in half a moment, योजनानाम् of yojanas, तानि those, दशसहस्राणि ten thousand, शिलोच्चयम् to the mountain ranges, शीघ्रम् swiftly, अभियाति reaches,

'Crossing ten thousand yojanas swiftly in half a moment, the Sun touches the mount behind which he sets.

KK-42-44Kishkindha Kanda 42.44

शृङ्गे तस्य महद्दिव्यं भवनं सूर्यसन्निभम्। प्रासादगणसम्बाधं विहितं विश्वकर्मणा।।4.42.44।।

śṛṅge tasya mahaddivyṃ bhavanṃ sūryasannibham| prāsādagaṇasambādhṃ vihitṃ viśvakarmaṇā||4.42.44||

KK-42-45Kishkindha Kanda 42.45

शोभितं तरुभिश्चित्रैर्नानापक्षिसमाकुलैः। निकेतं पाशहस्तस्य वरुणस्य महात्मनः।।4.42.45।।

śobhitṃ tarubhiścitrairnānāpakṣisamākulaiḥ| niketṃ pāśahastasya varuṇasya mahātmanḥ||4.42.45||

Translation

चित्रैः with colourful, नानापक्षिसमाकुलैः with flocks of different kinds of birds, तरुभिः with trees, शोभितम् enchanting, महात्मनः of great, पाशहस्तस्य one who holds the noose in hand, वरुणस्य Varuna's, निकेतम् residence

'It is the residence of Varuna, who holds the noose in his hand.It is an enchanting place, full of trees attracting flocks of various birds.

KK-42-46Kishkindha Kanda 42.46

अन्तरा मेरुमस्तं च तालो दशशिरा महान्। जातरूपमय्शीमान्भ्राजते चित्रवेदिकः।।4.42.46।।

यत्र तिष्ठति धर्मज्ञस्तपसा स्वेन भावितः। मेरुसावर्णिरित्येव ख्यातो वै ब्रह्मणा समः।।4.42.48।।

yatra tiṣṭhati dharmajñastapasā svena bhāvitḥ| merusāvarṇirityeva khyāto vai brahmaṇā samḥ||4.42.48||

प्रष्टव्यो मेरुसावर्णिर्महर्षिः सूर्यसन्निभः। प्रणम्य शिरसा भूमौ प्रवृत्तिं मैथिलीं प्रति।।4.42.49।।

'Bow down, touch the feet of the seer Merusavarna, who glows like the Sun and then enquire from him about Sita.

KK-42-50Kishkindha Kanda 42.50

एताव ज्जीवलोकस्य भास्करो रजनीक्ष्ये। कृत्वा वितिमिरं सर्वमस्तं गच्छति पर्वतम्।।4.42.50।।

etāva jjīvalokasya bhāskaro rajanīkṣye| kṛtvā vitimirṃ sarvamastṃ gacchati parvatam||4.42.50||

भास्करः Sun, जीवलोकस्य of the world of living beings, एतावत् to this extent, सर्वम् all, रजनीक्ष्ये at the end of the night, वितिमिरम् devoid of darkness, कृत्वा after doing, अस्तं पर्वतम् mountain behind which the sun sets, गच्छति reaches

Meaning

'The world of living beings is extended to this extent. The Sun dispels darkness at the end of the night and thereafter reaches the mountain behind which he sets (at the end of the day).

KK-42-51Kishkindha Kanda 42.51

एतावद्वानरैश्शक्यं गन्तुं वानरपुङ्गवाः। अभास्करममर्यादं न जानीमस्ततः परम्।।4.42.51।।

etāvadvānaraiśśakyṃ gantuṃ vānarapuṅgavāḥ| abhāskaramamaryādṃ na jānīmastatḥ param||4.42.51||

Translation

वानरपुङ्गवाः O great monkeys, एतावत् to this limit, वानरैः by monkeys, गन्तुम् to go, शक्यम् possible, अभास्करम् devoid of the Sun, अमर्यादं च without boundaries, ततः परम् beyond that, न जानीमः we do not know

Meaning

'O great monkeys you can go only up to that point. The Sun's rays do not extend beyond this and it has no boundaries.We do not know about the area beyond this limit.

KK-42-52Kishkindha Kanda 42.52

अधिगम्य तु वैदेहीं निलयं रावणस्य च। अस्त पर्वतमासाद्य पूर्णे मासे निवर्तत।।4.42.52।।

adhigamya tu vaidehīṃ nilayṃ rāvaṇasya ca| asta parvatamāsādya pūrṇe māse nivartata||4.42.52||

Translation

वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, रावणस्य Ravana's, निलयं च abode, अधिगम्य after finding out, अस्तं पर्वतम् Astha mountain, आसाद्य after reaching, मासे a month, पूर्णे in completion of, निवर्तत you may return

'Go and find out Sita and the abode of Ravana. After this, return to the mountain behind which the Sun sets and come back on completion of a month.

KK-42-53Kishkindha Kanda 42.53

ऊर्ध्वं मासान्न वस्तव्यं वसन् वध्यो भवेन्मम। सहैव शूरो युष्माभिश्श्वशुरो मे गमिष्यति।।4.42.53।।

ūrdhvṃ māsānna vastavyṃ vasan vadhyo bhavenmama| sahaiva śūro yuṣmābhiśśvaśuro me gamiṣyati||4.42.53||

मासात् more than a month, ऊर्द्वम् beyond that, न वस्तव्यम् you should not stay, वसन् while staying, मम to me, वध्यः to be killed, भवेत् you may be, युष्माभिः by you सहैव along with you, मे my, शूरः brave, श्वशुरः fatherinlaw, गमिष्यति will go

'If you tarry beyond a month, you will be slain. My fatherin law, the brave hero will go with your group.

KK-42-54Kishkindha Kanda 42.54

श्रोतव्यं सर्वमेतस्य भवद्भिर्दिष्टकारिभिः। गुरुरेष महाबाहुश्श्वशुरो मे महाबलः।।4.42.54।।

śrotavyṃ sarvametasya bhavadbhirdiṣṭakāribhiḥ| gurureṣa mahābāhuśśvaśuro me mahābalḥ||4.42.54||

दिष्टकारिभिः by those who carry out orders, भवद्भि: by you, एतस्य his, सर्वम् all, श्रोतव्यम् listen, महाबाहुः strongarmed one, महाबलःvery strong, एषः he, मे my, श्वशुरः fatherinlaw, गुरुः teacher

'You should obey him. You are meant to carry out his orders. He is not only my fatherinlaw but also a valiant, strong and powerful hero and my preceptor.

भवन्तश्चापि विक्रान्ताः प्रमाणं सर्व कर्मसु। प्रमाणमेनं संस्थाप्य पश्यध्वं पश्चिमां दिशम्।।4.42.55।।

bhavantaścāpi vikrāntāḥ pramāṇṃ sarva karmasu| pramāṇamenṃ sṃsthāpya paśyadhvṃ paścimāṃ diśam||4.42.55||
