KK-39-1Kishkindha Kanda 39.1

इति ब्रुवाणं सुग्रीवं रामो धर्मभृतां वरः। बाहुभ्यां सम्परिष्वज्य प्रत्युवाच कृताञ्जलिम्।।4.39.1।।

iti bruvāṇṃ sugrīvṃ rāmo dharmabhṛtāṃ varḥ| bāhubhyāṃ sampariṣvajya pratyuvāca kṛtāñjalim||4.39.1||

Translation

धर्मभृताम् among the upholders of righteousness, वरः foremost, रामः Rama, इति thus, ब्रुवाणम् spoke, कृताञ्जलिम् with folded hands, सुग्रीवम् to Sugriva, बाहुभ्याम् shoulders, सम्परिष्वज्य having hugged, प्रत्युवाच replied.

Meaning

On hearing Sugriva who stood with folded hands, Rama, the foremost among the upholders of righteousness, hugged him and said:

KK-39-2-3Kishkindha Kanda 39.2–3 (युग्मम्)

यदिन्द्रो वर्षते वर्षं न तच्चित्रं भवेत्क्वचित्। आदित्यो वा सहस्रांशुः कुर्याद्वितिमिरं नभः।।4.39.2।। चन्द्रमा रश्मिभिः कुर्यात्पृथिवीं सौम्य निर्मलाम्। त्वद्विधो वाऽपि मित्राणां प्रतिकुर्यात्परन्तप ।।4.39.3।।

yadindro varṣate varṣṃ na taccitrṃ bhavetkvacit| ādityo vā sahasrāṃśuḥ kuryādvitimirṃ nabhḥ||4.39.2|| candramā raśmibhiḥ kuryātpṛthivīṃ saumya nirmalām| tvadvidho vā'pi mitrāṇāṃ pratikuryātparantapa ||4.39.3||

Translation

परन्तप O scorcher of enemies, सौम्य O gentle one, इन्द्रः Indra, वर्षम् यत् वर्षते when he rains, सहस्रांशुः god with a thousand rays, वा or else, आदित्यः Sun, नभः sky, वितिमिरम् bright, कुर्यात् make, चन्द्रमाः Moon, पृथिवीं on the earth, रश्मिभिः with his rays, निर्मलाम् cool, कुर्यात् does, त्वद्विधः a person like you, मित्राणाम् for friends, प्रतिकुर्यात् help in turn, तत् that, चित्रम् strange, न भविष्यति will not be.

Meaning

'O scorcher of enemies, gentle Sugriva it will not be strange if Indra showers rain, if the Sun in the sky dispels darkness with his thousand rays, and if the Moon cools down the earth with his light, and a person like you helps his friend.

KK-39-4Kishkindha Kanda 39.4

एवं त्वयि न तच्चित्रं भवेद्यत्सौम्य शोभनम्। जानाम्यहं त्वां सुग्रीव सततं प्रियवादिनम्।।4.39.4।।

evṃ tvayi na taccitrṃ bhavedyatsaumya śobhanam| jānāmyahṃ tvāṃ sugrīva satatṃ priyavādinam||4.39.4||

Translation

सौम्य gentle one, सुग्रीव Sugriva, एवम् that way, त्वयि you, शोभनम् well done, तत् that, चित्रम् surprising, न भवेत् will not be, त्वाम् you, सततम् always, प्रियवादिनम् pleasing in talk, अहम् I, जानामि know.

Meaning

'O gentle Sugriva this your help to me is not surprising. You always help your friends and speak in a pleasing manner.

KK-39-5Kishkindha Kanda 39.5

त्वत्सनाथ: सखे सङ्ख्ये जेताऽस्मि सकलानरीन्। त्वमेव मे सुहृतन्मित्रं साहाय्यं कर्तुमर्हसि।।4.39.5।।

tvatsanātha: sakhe saṅkhye jetā'smi sakalānarīn| tvameva me suhṛtanmitrṃ sāhāyyṃ kartumarhasi||4.39.5||

Translation

सखे O friend, त्वत्सनाथः one supported by you, सङ्ख्ये in war, सकलान् all, अरीन् enemies, जेताऽस्मि I will win over, सुहृत् goodhearted, मित्रम् friend, त्वमेव you alone, मे to me, साहाय्यम् help, कर्तुम् to render, अर्हसि it is proper on your part.

Meaning

'O friend I will win over all enemies in war supported by you.You are a goodhearted friend and you alone should help me.

KK-39-6Kishkindha Kanda 39.6

जहारात्मविनाशाय वैदेहीं राक्षसाधमः। वञ्चयित्वा तु पौलोमीमनुह्लादो यथा शचीम्।।4.39.6।।

jahārātmavināśāya vaidehīṃ rākṣasādhamḥ| vañcayitvā tu paulomīmanuhlādo yathā śacīm||4.39.6||

Translation

राक्षसाधमः lowly demon, वञ्चयित्वा after deceiving, वैदेहीम् Vaidehi, अनुह्लादः Anuhlada, पौलोमीम् Poulomi ( Indra's wife), शचीं यथा like Sachi, आत्मविनाशाय for his own destruction, जहार took away.

Meaning

Just as Anuhlada (son of Hiranyakasipu and brother of Prahlada) took away, Poulomi (Sachi, daughter of Puloma) deceiving Indra, this lowly demon took away Sita, daughter of the king of Videha.

KK-39-7Kishkindha Kanda 39.7

न चिरात्तं हनिष्यामि रावणं निशितैश्शरैः। पौलोम्याः पितरं दृप्तं शतक्रतुरिवाऽहवे।।4.39.7।।

na cirāttṃ haniṣyāmi rāvaṇṃ niśitaiśśaraiḥ| paulomyāḥ pitarṃ dṛptṃ śatakraturivā'have||4.39.7||

Translation

तं रावणम् that Ravana, न चिरात् very soon, अहवे in a battle, शतक्रतुः one who has done a hundred sacrifices, Indra, पौलोम्याः Pouloma's, दृप्तम् proud, पितरम् father, निशितैः with sharp ones, शरैः arrows, हनिष्यामि will kill.

Meaning

'I will kill Ravana with my sharp arrows just as Indra, (who had done a hundred sacrifices) killed the proud father of Poulomi.

KK-39-8Kishkindha Kanda 39.8

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे चैव रजस्समभिवर्तत। उष्णां तीव्रां सहस्रांशोश्छादयद्गगने प्रभाम्।।4.39.8।।

etasminnantare caiva rajassamabhivartata| uṣṇāṃ tīvrāṃ sahasrāṃśośchādayadgagane prabhām||4.39.8||

Translation

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे in the mean while, गगने in the sky, सहस्रांशोः thousandrayed Sun's, उष्णां तीव्राम् intense heat, प्रभाम् radiance, छादयत् covering, रजः dust, समभिवर्तत was raised.

Meaning

In the mean while the dust raised (by army of monkeys) all over obscured the intense heat from the sky and the radiance of the thousandrayed Sun.

KK-39-9Kishkindha Kanda 39.9

दिशः पर्याकुलाश्चासन्रजसा तेन मूर्छता। चचाल च मही सर्वा सशैलवनकानना।।4.39.9।।

diśḥ paryākulāścāsanrajasā tena mūrchatā| cacāla ca mahī sarvā saśailavanakānanā||4.39.9||

Translation

तेन by that, रजसा by the dust, मूर्छता by the spread, दिशः sides, पर्याकुलाश्च became mixed up, सशैलवनकानना including mountains, gardens and forests, सर्वा all, मही च and earth, चचाल was shaken.

Meaning

By the spreading of dust, the quarters were not visible.The earth including the mountains gardens and forests was shaken up.

KK-39-10-13Kishkindha Kanda 39.10–13 (कलापकम्)

ततो नगेन्द्रसङ्काशैस्तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रैर्महाबलैः। कृत्स्ना सञ्छादिता भूमिरसङ्ख्येयैः प्लवङ्गमैः।।4.39.10।। निमेषान्तरमात्रेण ततस्तैर्हरियूथपैः। कोटीशतपरीवारैः कामरूपिभिरावृता।।4.39.11।। नादेयैः पार्वतीयैश्च सामुद्रैश्च महाबलैः। हरिभिर्मेघनिर्ह्रादैरन्यैश्च वनचारिभिः।।4.39.12।। तरुणादित्यवर्णैश्च शशिगौरैश्च वानरैः। पद्मकेसरवर्णैश्च श्वेतैर्मेरुकृतालयैः।।4.39.13।।

tato nagendrasaṅkāśaistīkṣṇadṃṣṭrairmahābalaiḥ| kṛtsnā sañchāditā bhūmirasaṅkhyeyaiḥ plavaṅgamaiḥ||4.39.10|| nimeṣāntaramātreṇa tatastairhariyūthapaiḥ| koṭīśataparīvāraiḥ kāmarūpibhirāvṛtā||4.39.11|| nādeyaiḥ pārvatīyaiśca sāmudraiśca mahābalaiḥ| haribhirmeghanirhrādairanyaiśca vanacāribhiḥ||4.39.12|| taruṇādityavarṇaiśca śaśigauraiśca vānaraiḥ| padmakesaravarṇaiśca śvetairmerukṛtālayaiḥ||4.39.13||

Translation

ततः then, नगेन्द्रसङ्काशैः resembling mountains, तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रैः having sharp fangs, महाबलैः powerful, असङ्ख्येयैः innumerable, प्लवङ्गमैः by the monkeys, कृत्स्ना the entire, भूमिः land, निमेषान्तरमात्रेण in a minute's time, सच्छादिता was covered, ततः then, हरियूथपैः with monkey troops, कोटीशतपरीवारैः by a hundred crore monkeys, कामरूपिभिः who can assume form at will, वानरैः by monkeys, नादेयैः coming from the rivers, पार्वतेयैश्च from the mountains, सामुद्रैश्च from the seas, महाबलैः very strong ones, हरिभिः monkeys, मेघनिर्ह्रादैः thundering like clouds, अन्यैः others, वनचारिभिः wanderers of the forest, तरुणादित्यवर्णैः of red complexion resembling the rising Sun, शशिगौरैश्च tawny coloured ones like the Moon, पद्मकेसरवर्णैश्च of the colour of filaments of white lotus, श्वेतैः by white, र्मेरुकृतालयैः residents of the mountain Meru, वानरैः with monkeys.

Meaning

In a minute, the entire land was crowded with innumerable powerful monkeys of the size of mountains having sharp fangs.The monkey leaders with a hundred crore monkey followers, who could assume any form at their will mighty monkeys from the mountains, rivers and seas vanaras thundering like clouds and other free vanaras who were wanderers vanaras red in colour like the rising Sun, tawny coloured ones like the Moon some who were of the hue of white lotus filaments and some vanaras residing in mount Meru came there.

KK-39-14Kishkindha Kanda 39.14

कोटीसहस्रैर्दशभिः श्रीमान्परिवृतस्तदा। वीरश्शतवलिर्नाम वानरः प्रत्यदृश्यत।।4.39.14।।

koṭīsahasrairdaśabhiḥ śrīmānparivṛtastadā| vīraśśatavalirnāma vānarḥ pratyadṛśyata||4.39.14||

Translation

तदा then, दशभिः by ten, कोटीसहस्रैः thousand crores, परिवृतः accompanied by, श्रीमान् glorious, वीरः warrior, शतवलिर्नाम named Satavali, वानरः monkey, प्रत्यदृश्यत appeared on the site.

Meaning

Then appeared the glorious warrior named Satavali, followed by ten thousand crore of monkeys.

KK-39-15Kishkindha Kanda 39.15

ततः काञ्चनशैलाभस्ताराया वीर्यवान्पिता। अनेकैर्दशसाहस्रैः कोटिभिः प्रत्यदृश्यत।।4.39.15।।

tatḥ kāñcanaśailābhastārāyā vīryavānpitā| anekairdaśasāhasraiḥ koṭibhiḥ pratyadṛśyata||4.39.15||

Translation

ततः then, काञ्चनशैलाभः appearing like the golden mountain (Meru), वीर्यवान् valiant, पिता father, दशसाहस्रैः by ten thousand, कोटिभिः by crores, अनेकैः and many, प्रत्यदृश्यत appeared with, ताराया Tara's.

Meaning

(Next came) the valiant father of Tara of golden complexion like mount Meru followed by ten thousand crore of vanaras.

KK-39-16Kishkindha Kanda 39.16

तथाऽपरेण कोटीनां सहस्रेण समन्वितः। पिता रुमाया सम्प्राप्तस्सुग्रीवश्वशुरो विभुः।।4.39.16।।

tathā'pareṇa koṭīnāṃ sahasreṇa samanvitḥ| pitā rumāyā samprāptassugrīvaśvaśuro vibhuḥ||4.39.16||

Translation

तथा likewise, विभुः mighty one, रुमायाः पिता father of Ruma, सुग्रीवश्वशुरः king Sugriva's fatherinlaw, अपरेण by another, कोटीनाम् by a crore, सहस्रेण thousand, समन्वितः accompanied with, सम्प्राप्तः reached.

Meaning

Likewise mighty father of Ruma, fatherinlaw of Sugriva, reached there accompanied by a thousand crore monkeys.

KK-39-17-18Kishkindha Kanda 39.17–18 (युग्मम्)

पद्मकेसरसङ्काशस्तरुणार्कनिभाननः। बुद्धिमान्वानरश्रेष्ठस्सर्ववानरसत्तमः।।4.39.17।। अनेकैर्बहुसाहस्रैर्वानराणां समन्वितः। पिता हनुमतश्रशीमान्केसरी प्रत्यदृश्यत।।4.39.18।।

padmakesarasaṅkāśastaruṇārkanibhānanḥ| buddhimānvānaraśreṣṭhassarvavānarasattamḥ||4.39.17|| anekairbahusāhasrairvānarāṇāṃ samanvitḥ| pitā hanumataśraśīmānkesarī pratyadṛśyata||4.39.18||

Translation

पद्मकेसरसङ्काशः like lotus filaments in colour, तरुणार्कनिभाननः with the countenance red like the early morning Sun, बुद्धिमान् wise, वानरश्रेष्ठः foremost of vanaras, सर्ववानरसत्तमः the best among vanaras, हनुमतः Hanuman's, पिता father, श्रीमान् prosperous, केसरी Kesari, वानराणाम् of vanaras, अनेकैः many, बहुसाहस्रैः by many thousands, समन्वितः accompanied by, प्रत्यदृश्यत appeared.

Meaning

Then arrived Kesari, the wise and illustrious monkey, foremost and the best among vanaras, father of Hanuman. He was of the colour of lotus filaments and his countenance was red like the early morning Sun. He was accompanied by many thousands of monkeys.

KK-39-19Kishkindha Kanda 39.19

गोलाङ्गूलमहाराजो गवाक्षो भीमविक्रमः। वृतः कोटिसहस्रेण वानराणामदृश्यत।।4.39.19।।

golāṅgūlamahārājo gavākṣo bhīmavikramḥ| vṛtḥ koṭisahasreṇa vānarāṇāmadṛśyata||4.39.19||

Translation

वानराणाम् of vanaras, कोटिसहस्रेण by a thousand crores, वृतः surrounded, गोलाङ्गूलमहाराजः king of Langur, भीमविक्रमः a warrior of fierce valour, गवाक्षः Gavaksha, अदृश्यत was seen

Meaning

Next arrived Gavaksha, king of Langurs (whose tail resembled the cow's), of fierceful courage surrounded by a thousand crore of vanaras.

KK-39-20Kishkindha Kanda 39.20

ऋक्षाणां भीमवेगानां धूम्रश्शत्रुनिबर्हणः। वृतः कोटिसहस्राभ्यां द्वाभ्यां समभिवर्तत।।4.39.20।।

ṛkṣāṇāṃ bhīmavegānāṃ dhūmraśśatrunibarhaṇḥ| vṛtḥ koṭisahasrābhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ samabhivartata||4.39.20||

Translation

शत्रुनिबर्हणः destroyer of enemies, धूम्रः Dhumra, भीमवेगानाम् of those of frightening speed, ऋक्षाणाम् of bears, द्वाभ्याम् with two, कोटिसहस्राभ्याम् thousand crores, समभिवर्तत arrived there.

Meaning

Dhumra, destroyer of enemies, came next followed by two thousand crore of bears of terrible speed.

KK-39-21Kishkindha Kanda 39.21

महाचलनिभैर्घोरै: पनसो नाम यूथपः। आजगाम महावीर्यस्तिसृभिः कोटिभिर्वृतः।।4.39.21।।

mahācalanibhairghorai: panaso nāma yūthapḥ| ājagāma mahāvīryastisṛbhiḥ koṭibhirvṛtḥ||4.39.21||

Translation

पनसो नाम Panasa by name, महावीर्यः a great warrior, यूथपः troop leader, तिसृभिः कोटिभिः by three crores, महाचलनिभैः by those resembling huge mountains, घोरैः by a dreadful one, वृतः surrounded by, आजगाम came.

Meaning

Similarly, the great warrior named Panasa, leader of the troop, reported with three crore dreadful vanaras of the size of huge mountains.

KK-39-22Kishkindha Kanda 39.22

नीलाञ्जनचयाकारो नीलो नामाऽथ यूथपः। अदृश्यत महाकायः कोटिभिर्दशभिर्वृतः।।4.39.22।।

nīlāñjanacayākāro nīlo nāmā'tha yūthapḥ| adṛśyata mahākāyḥ koṭibhirdaśabhirvṛtḥ||4.39.22||

Translation

अथ then, दशभिः कोटिभिः by ten crore, वृतः surrounded, नीलाञ्जनचयाकारः dark like a mountain of collyrium, महाकायः of huge body, नीलो नाम by name Nila, यूथपः leader, अदृश्यत appeared.

Meaning

Then appeared Nila of huge body, dark like a mountain of collyrium accompanied by ten crore vanaras.

KK-39-23Kishkindha Kanda 39.23

ततः काञ्चनशैलाभो गवयो नाम यूथपः। आजगाम महावीर्यः पञ्चभि: कोटिभिर्वृतः।।4.39.23।।

tatḥ kāñcanaśailābho gavayo nāma yūthapḥ| ājagāma mahāvīryḥ pañcabhi: koṭibhirvṛtḥ||4.39.23||

Translation

ततः then, काञ्चनशैलाभः appearing like golden mountain, महावीर्यः a great warrior, गवयो नाम Gavaya by name, यूथपः leader of a group, पञ्चभिः कोटिभिः by five crores, वृतः surrounded, आजगाम arrived.

Meaning

Then arrived the leader of five crore vanaras, the great warrior Gavaya who resembled a golden mountain.

KK-39-24Kishkindha Kanda 39.24

दरीमुखश्च बलवान्यूथपोऽभ्याययौ तदा। वृतः कोटिसहस्रेण सुग्रीवं समुपस्थितः।।4.39.24।।

darīmukhaśca balavānyūthapo'bhyāyayau tadā| vṛtḥ koṭisahasreṇa sugrīvṃ samupasthitḥ||4.39.24||

Translation

तदा then, बलवान् strong, दरीमुखः Darimukha, यूथपः leader, कोटिसहस्रेण with one thousand crores, वृतः surrounded, अभ्याययौ came near, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, समुपस्थितः approached.

Meaning

Then the strong Darimukha, leader of a thousand crore monkeys approached Sugriva.

KK-39-25Kishkindha Kanda 39.25

मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चोभावश्विपुत्रौ महाबलौ। कोटिकोटिसहस्रेण वानराणामदृश्यताम्।।4.39.25।।

maindaśca dvividaścobhāvaśviputrau mahābalau| koṭikoṭisahasreṇa vānarāṇāmadṛśyatām||4.39.25||

Translation

महाबलौ two very powerful, अश्विपुत्रौ two sons of Asvi, मैन्दश्च Mainda, द्विविदश्च Dvivida, उभौ both, वानराणाम् vanaras, कोटिकोटिसहस्रेण by a thousand crores, अदृश्यताम् appeared.

Meaning

Two very powerful sons of Asvini, Mainda and Dvivida, appeared with a thousand crore vanaras.

KK-39-26Kishkindha Kanda 39.26

गजश्च बलवान् वीर: कोटिभिस्तिसृभिर्वृतः। आजगाम महातेजा सुग्रीवस्य समीपतः।।4.39.26।।

gajaśca balavān vīra: koṭibhistisṛbhirvṛtḥ| ājagāma mahātejā sugrīvasya samīpatḥ||4.39.26||

Translation

बलवान् stout, वीरः hero, महातेजाः mighty, गजश्च Gaja also, तिसृभिः कोटिभिः with three crores of vanaras, वृतः surrounded by, सुग्रीवस्य of Sugriva, समीपतः presence, आजगाम reached.

Meaning

Strong and powerful Gaja also reached Sugriva with three crore vanaras.

KK-39-27Kishkindha Kanda 39.27

ऋक्षराजो महातेजा जाम्बवान्नाम नामतः। कोटिभिर्दशभिः प्राप्तः सुग्रीवस्य वशे स्थितः।।4.39.27।।

ṛkṣarājo mahātejā jāmbavānnāma nāmatḥ| koṭibhirdaśabhiḥ prāptḥ sugrīvasya vaśe sthitḥ||4.39.27||

Translation

महातेजाः glorious, नामतः by name, जाम्बवान् नाम called Jambavan, ऋक्षराजः king of bears, दशभिः ten, कोटिभि with crores, प्राप्तः got, सुग्रीवस्य to Sugriva, वशे under control, स्थितः stood.

Meaning

Glorious Jambavan, king of bears, stood before Sugriva with ten thousand crore vanaras.

KK-39-28Kishkindha Kanda 39.28

रुमण्वान्नाम विक्रान्तो वानरो वानरेश्वरम्। आययौ बलवांस्तूर्णं कोटीशतसमावृतः।।4.39.28।।

rumaṇvānnāma vikrānto vānaro vānareśvaram| āyayau balavāṃstūrṇṃ koṭīśatasamāvṛtḥ||4.39.28||

Translation

विक्रान्तः victorious, वानरैः with vanaras, वृतः surrounded by, बलवान् sturdy, रुमण्वन्नाम called Rumanvan, कोटीशतसमावृतः surrounded by hundred crores of vanaras, तूर्णम् swiftly, समावृतः came and assembled.

Meaning

Sturdy and victorious vanara called Rumanvan came swiftly followed by a hundred crore vanaras.

KK-39-29Kishkindha Kanda 39.29

ततः कोटिसहस्राणां सहस्रेण शतेन च। पृष्ठतोऽनुगतः प्राप्तो हरिभिर्गन्धमादनः।।4.39.29।।

tatḥ koṭisahasrāṇāṃ sahasreṇa śatena ca| pṛṣṭhato'nugatḥ prāpto haribhirgandhamādanḥ||4.39.29||

Translation

ततः then, कोटिसहस्राणाम् of a thousand crore, सहस्रेण by a thousand, शतेन च by a hundred also, वानरैः with vanara, पृष्ठतः behind him, अनुगतः followed, गन्धमादन: Gandhamadana, प्राप्तः came.

Meaning

Then came Gandhamadana with a hundred thousand crore of vanaras following him.

KK-39-30Kishkindha Kanda 39.30

ततः पद्मसहस्रेण वृतश्शङ्कुशतेन च। युवराजोऽङ्गदः प्राप्तः पितृतुल्यपराक्रमः।।4.39.30।।

tatḥ padmasahasreṇa vṛtaśśaṅkuśatena ca| yuvarājo'ṅgadḥ prāptḥ pitṛtulyaparākramḥ||4.39.30||

Translation

ततः then, पितुः तुल्यपराक्रमः comparable in prowess to his father, युवराजः heir apparent, अङ्गदः Angada, पद्मसहस्रेण with a thousand Padmas (trillion), शङ्कुशतेन च one hundred times Sanku (ten trillion), वृतः surrounded, प्राप्तः arrived.

Meaning

Then arrived the heir apparent, Angada, whose prowess is comparable to that of his father with him came a thousand padmas and a hundred sankus of followers.

KK-39-31Kishkindha Kanda 39.31

ततस्ताराद्युतिस्तारो हरिर्भीमपराक्रमः। पञ्चभिर्हरिकोटीभिर्दूरतः प्रत्यदृश्यत।।4.39.31।।

tatastārādyutistāro harirbhīmaparākramḥ| pañcabhirharikoṭībhirdūratḥ pratyadṛśyata||4.39.31||

Translation

ततः then, ताराद्युतिः shining like a star, भीमपराक्रमः a warrior of terrific valour, तारः Tara, हरिः vanara, पञ्चभिः with five, हरिकोटीभिः with crores of vanaras, दूरतः at a distance, प्रत्यदृश्यत was seen.

Meaning

इन्द्रजानुः कपिर्वीरो यूथपः प्रत्यदृश्यत। एकादशानां कोटीनामीश्वरस्तैस्समावृतः।।4.39.32।।

indrajānuḥ kapirvīro yūthapḥ pratyadṛśyata| ekādaśānāṃ koṭīnāmīśvarastaissamāvṛtḥ||4.39.32||

Translation

एकादशानां कोटीनाम् of eleven crores of vanaras, ईश्वरः chief, वीरःhero, यूथपः leader of troop, इन्द्रजानुः Indrajanu, कपिः vanara, तैः with them, समावृतः surrounded, प्रत्यदृश्यत appeared.

Meaning

Then Indrajanu the troop leader and chief of vanaras appeared along with eleven crore monkeys.

KK-39-33Kishkindha Kanda 39.33

ततो रम्भस्त्वनुप्राप्तस्तरुणादित्यसन्निभः। अयुतेनावृतश्चैव सहस्रेण शतेन च।।4.39.33।।

tato rambhastvanuprāptastaruṇādityasannibhḥ| ayutenāvṛtaścaiva sahasreṇa śatena ca||4.39.33||

Translation

ततः thereafter, तरुणादित्यसन्निभः of the colour of the rising Sun, रम्भः Rambha, अयुतेना by one ayuta (10,000), सहस्रेण by a thousand, शतेन च by a hundred, वृतः surrounded, अनुप्राप्तः arrived

Meaning

Thereafter Rambha of the colour of the rising Sun brought together an army of one thousand and one hundred ayuta troops.

KK-39-34Kishkindha Kanda 39.34

ततो यूथपतिर्वीरो दुर्मुखो नाम वानरः। प्रत्यदृश्यत कोटीभ्यां द्वाभ्यां परिवृतो बली।।4.39.34।।

tato yūthapatirvīro durmukho nāma vānarḥ| pratyadṛśyata koṭībhyāṃ dvābhyāṃ parivṛto balī||4.39.34||

Translation

ततः thereafter, यूथपतिः leader of the troop, वीरः hero, बली strong one, दुर्मुखो नाम Durmukha by name, वानरः vanara, द्वाभ्याम् with two, कोटीभ्याम् with crores, परिवृतः surrounded, प्रत्यदृश्यत appeared.

Meaning

Thereafter the mighty hero, leader of the troop, by name Durmukha appeared with two crore vanaras.

KK-39-35Kishkindha Kanda 39.35

कैलासशिखराकारैर्वानरैर्भीमविक्रमैः। वृतः कोटिसहस्रेण हनुमान्प्रत्यदृश्यत।।4.39.35।।

kailāsaśikharākārairvānarairbhīmavikramaiḥ| vṛtḥ koṭisahasreṇa hanumānpratyadṛśyata||4.39.35||

Translation

हनुमान् Hanuman, कैलासशिखराकारैः with those like the peaks of Kailasa mountain, भीमविक्रमैः with warriors of frightful valour, कोटिसहस्रेण by one thousand crores, वानरैः with vanaras, वृतः surrounded by, प्रत्यदृश्यत showed up.

Meaning

And Hanuman showed up surrounded by a thousand crore vanaras of frightful valour. They looked like the peaks of Kailasa mountain.

KK-39-36Kishkindha Kanda 39.36

नलश्चापि महावीर्यस्संवृतो द्रुमवासिभिः। कोटीशतेन सम्प्राप्तस्सहस्रेण शतेन च।।4.39.36।।

nalaścāpi mahāvīryassṃvṛto drumavāsibhiḥ| koṭīśatena samprāptassahasreṇa śatena ca||4.39.36||

Translation

महावीर्यः valiant, नलश्चापि Nala also, कोटीशतेन by a hundred crores, सहस्रेण by a thousand, शतेन च and by hundreds, द्रुमवासिभिः by the tree dwellers(monkeys), संवृतः surrounded by, सम्प्राप्तः arrived.

Meaning

Valiant Nala also arrived surrounded by a hundred crore and a hundred thousand treedwellers (monkeys).

KK-39-37Kishkindha Kanda 39.37

ततो दधिमुखश्रीमान्कोटिभिर्दशभिर्वृतः। सम्प्राप्तोऽभिमतस्तस्य सुग्रीवस्य महात्मनः।।4.39.37।।

tato dadhimukhaśrīmānkoṭibhirdaśabhirvṛtḥ| samprāpto'bhimatastasya sugrīvasya mahātmanḥ||4.39.37||

Translation

ततः then, श्रीमान् prosperous, दधिमुखः Dadhimukha, दशभिः with ten, कोटिभिः with crore, वृतः surrounded with, अभिमतः a favourite one, तस्य his, महात्मनः सुग्रीस्य of great Sugriva, सम्प्राप्तः reached.

Meaning

Then the illustrious Dadhimukha, great Sugriva's favourite leader reached with ten crore vanaras.

KK-39-38-39Kishkindha Kanda 39.38–39 (युग्मम्)

शरभः कुमुदो वह्निर्वानरो रंह एव च। एते चान्ये च बहवो वानराः कामरूपिणः।।4.39.38।। आवृत्य पृथिवीं सर्वां पर्वतांश्च वनानि च। यूथपा स्समनुप्राप्ता स्तेषां संख्या न विद्यते।।4.39.39।। आगताश्च विशिष्टाश्च पृथिव्यां सर्ववानराः।

śarabhḥ kumudo vahnirvānaro rṃha eva ca| ete cānye ca bahavo vānarāḥ kāmarūpiṇḥ||4.39.38|| āvṛtya pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ parvatāṃśca vanāni ca| yūthapā ssamanuprāptā steṣāṃ sṃkhyā na vidyate||4.39.39|| āgatāśca viśiṣṭāśca pṛthivyāṃ sarvavānarāḥ|

Translation

शरभः Sarabha, कुमुदः Kumuda, वानरः vanara, वह्निः Vahni, रंहः एव च and so also Ramha, एते all of them, कामरूपिणः who can assume any form at will, अन्ये च and others, बहवः many, तेषाम् of them, संख्या number, वानराः vanaras, यूथपाः troops, सर्वाम् entire, पृथिवीम् land, पर्वतांश्च and mountains, वनानि च and forests also, आवृत्य having occupied, समनुप्राप्ताः advancing towards, आगताः came, सर्ववानराः all the vanaras, पृथिव्याम् of the earth, विशिष्टाश्च outstanding.

Meaning

Sarabha, Kumuda, Vahni and Ramhi and many other vanara troops who can assume any form at their will and others from all over the land, mountains and forest advanced towards Sugriva. All the outstanding vanaras of the earth came and covered the land.

KK-39-40Kishkindha Kanda 39.40

आप्लवन्तः प्लवन्तश्च गर्जन्तश्च प्लवङ्गमाः। अभ्यवर्तन्त सुग्रीवं सूर्यमभ्रगणा इव।।4.39.40।।

āplavantḥ plavantaśca garjantaśca plavaṅgamāḥ| abhyavartanta sugrīvṃ sūryamabhragaṇā iva||4.39.40||

Translation

प्लवङ्गमाः monkeys, आप्लवन्तः leaping in enthusiasm, प्लवन्तश्च and jumping, गर्जन्तश्च and roaring, सूर्यम् Sun, अभ्रगणा इव like the clouds, सुग्रीवम् Sugriva, अभ्यवर्तन्त approached.

Meaning

The monkeys came leaping, jumping and roaring in enthusiasm and surrounded Sugriva just as clouds surround the Sun.

KK-39-41Kishkindha Kanda 39.41

कुर्वाणा बहुशब्दांश्च प्रहृष्टा बाहुशालिनः। शिरोभिर्वानरेन्द्राय सुग्रीवाय न्यवेदयन्।।4.39.41।।

kurvāṇā bahuśabdāṃśca prahṛṣṭā bāhuśālinḥ| śirobhirvānarendrāya sugrīvāya nyavedayan||4.39.41||

Translation

प्रहृष्टाः happy ones, बाहुशालिनः of sturdy shoulders, बहुशब्दान् many kinds of noises, कुर्वाणाः while they made, शिरोभिः with their heads, वानरेन्द्राय to the lord of monkeys, सुग्रीवाय to Sugriva, न्यवेदयन् reported.

Meaning

The leaders of monkeys possesing sturdy shoulders made many kinds of noises and reported to Sugriva, bending their heads in reverence.

KK-39-42Kishkindha Kanda 39.42

अपरे वानरश्रेष्ठास्सङ्गम्य च यथोचितम्। सुग्रीवेण समागम्य स्थिताः प्राञ्जलय स्तदा।।4.39.42।।

apare vānaraśreṣṭhāssaṅgamya ca yathocitam| sugrīveṇa samāgamya sthitāḥ prāñjalaya stadā||4.39.42||

Translation

अपरे others, वानरश्रेष्ठाः foremost of vanaras, यथोचितम् in a suitable manner, सङ्गम्य after coming together, सुग्रीवेण with Sugriva, समागम्य after reaching, तदा then, प्राञ्जलयः with folded hands in salutation, स्थिताः stood.

Meaning

Thereafter the vanaras came close to Sugriva freely and on reaching him stood, offering salutations with folded hands.

KK-39-43Kishkindha Kanda 39.43

सुग्रीवस्त्वरितो रामे सर्वांस्तां वानररर्षभान्। निवेदयित्वा धर्मज्ञः स्थितः प्राञ्जलिरब्रवीत्।।4.39.43।।

sugrīvastvarito rāme sarvāṃstāṃ vānarararṣabhān| nivedayitvā dharmajñḥ sthitḥ prāñjalirabravīt||4.39.43||

Translation

धर्मज्ञः knower of dharma, सुग्रीवः Sugriva, त्वरितः at once, प्राञ्जलिः with folded hands, स्थितः stood, वानरर्षभान् prominent vanaras, तान् them, सर्वान् all, रामे to Rama, निवेदयित्वा having presented, अब्रवीत् said.

Meaning

Sugriva, knower of dharma, at once presented all the prominent vanaras to Rama, and standing with folded hands said.

KK-39-44Kishkindha Kanda 39.44

यथासुखं पर्वतनिझरेषु वनेषु सर्वेषु च वानरेन्द्राः। निवेशयित्वा विधिवद्बलानि बलं बलज्ञः प्रतिपत्तुमीष्टे।।4.39.44।।

yathāsukhṃ parvatanijhareṣu vaneṣu sarveṣu ca vānarendrāḥ| niveśayitvā vidhivadbalāni balṃ balajñḥ pratipattumīṣṭe||4.39.44||

Translation

वानरेन्द्राः best of vanaras, पर्वतनिझरेषु by the side of swift mountain streams, सर्वेषु in all, वनेषु च in forests, यथासुखम् comfortably settled, विधिवत् as per tradition, बलानि army, निवेशयित्वा after lodging, बलज्ञः know the strength, बलम् of army, प्रतिपत्तुम् to know, ईष्टे decided.

Meaning

Sugriva told the chiefs to station the forces by the side of swift mountain streams, in forests, and hills and ascertain their exact number. इत्यार्ष श्रीमद्रामायणे वाल्मीकीय आदिकाव्ये किष्किन्धाकाण्डे एकोनचत्वारिंशस्सर्गः।। Thus ends the thirtyninth sarga of Kishkindakanda of the first epic, the Holy Ramayana composed by sage Valmiki.
